In My Hero Academia, we follow a bunch of teenage kids in their first year of high school, which is a coming-of-age history. 7 seasons and more than 140 episodes, now, I have not read the manga this is only an analysis of the anime.

Now, in the class 1-A, we have 20 students, 6 girls and 12 boys. Did all these girls and boys have a romantic storyline? No of course not that would be insane.

BUT all of them in some way or another talk or act in their view of romance, lets discuss about it, i have nothing better to do with my life and this show is living rent free in my head.

First, the girls, we have, along the seasons multiple times of the girls talking about crushes, about boys, who the cute boys are, we usually see them gossip and whispering about it, hell we have an entire subplot of our only female villain been crazy about her romantic feeling, almost as if this show were written for a middle age man who hasn’t never touch the female experience, but that is beside the point. We can tell without a doubt that at least: Ashido, the invisible girl, and Uraraka like and want male attention, I´M NOT SAYING THAT THEY WANT TO BE HARRAS, I'm saying that they pretty much like things like a boy telling them they look pretty in a nice dress, ok? Are we OK?

Now the boys, Mineta is a caricature of what a teenage boy is, I must say I remember being in middle school and hearing some of the boys be gross about the girls and plan elaborate ruses to harras them, sadly that happened, I also worked as a high school teacher for a few years and there are boys (and even men) who are like him, so yea that.

We see him concentrate in the fight, he doesn’t want to lose, not because he doesn’t want to lose to a girl but because he doesn’t want to lose to anybody, he goes hard on her and the audience buuuu him, even his friends call him out in his behavior, to which he responded that Uraraka was not weak, he must take the fight seriously, I know I know Feminist icon Bakugo Katsuki (I'm joking).

We have another interaction with that girl from the other school, the sexy lady that creates illusions that were part of the group of people who fail the test for the provisional license. She pretty much flirts with Bakugo and he pretty much ignores her.

Bakugo is a character who wants fame, he wants power and glory and money, when he is being a brat in the first episode he rants about how he is going to be the number one hero and he is going to be rich and famous, he wants all those significant of success.

He never talks about women in those fantasies.

Girls pretty much don’t matter to him.

But does he ever crave Male attention?

Yes, he does, he likes it when his minions follow him around and obey his orders, he is tormented by Izuku's admiration, he wants all might attention.

The Three Ways Ranma Saotome Ruins Your Gender

You might have imagined that I had mined out Ranma 1/2. For three years now, I have been using February as an excuse to talk about one specific romantic comedy from the 1980s that left permanent marks on my brain not because of how it represents romance but because of how it created an English-language fandom space and how that fandom space helped to raise me from my status of Barely A Human Ex-Cultist to Capable Of Talking To Humans. Between multiple How To Be Articles, covering Ranma, Akane, Ukyou and Tarou, an article connecting Akane Tendo to the idea of hyperreality, talking about the subreddit’s repetition of history, weird things that just happened in it, shipping lanes discourse, and of course, also a Story Pile article about it, you might imagine that maybe, maybe, I’ve tapped out the well of Ranma 1/2 conversations.

What I want to talk about today, what I want you to consider, is three different ways in which Ranma Saotome, specifically, just ruins your gender relationship, even not in the ways you think.

Way Of The Mirrored POol

First of all, Ranma is a guy who so often says the exact wrong thing at the exact wrong moment. It isn’t hard, reading a Ranma issue, to recognise the point where all Ranma has to do, for a single moment, is hold his tongue or say something nice. Anything nice. Anything nice at all. Just say sorry, dude, it’s right there, you can just say sorry and walk away from the problem you just caused!

It doesn’t take much, reading the manga, to get this series of object lessons about looking at the way that a thoughtless guy so often walks into saying something silly. Sure, you can take his side and justify what he says, but the way the story so often shows the sequence of events building up to him saying the stupid thing, it doesn’t take much to see just how often he is saying something stupid.

Look: Ranma is a boy who was raised by an absolute goober to reach the ideal of masculinity that was espoused by another even absoluter goober, and the result is a guy who will fight anything in an attempt to prove that he can fight everything, and that’s why something like two thirds of all fights in Ranma 1/2 are Ranma eating dirt for biting off what he couldn’t chew and then finding some way to win the rematch. This is not a subtle subtext, this is just the text, Ranma is a guy who loses a lot and does so because he’s stupid, and the ways he’s stupid are because of not listening to people or communicating clearly with them, especially when he’s embarrassed by something.

This also includes all the times he gets up to schemes in an attempt to mess with someone. Usually, this desire to mess with someone comes from a good place; Ryouga, for example, is usually up to something untrustworthy when Ranma is trying to get in his life and fiddle it up with some scheme that involves crossdressing. Thing is, even if he’s doing it with a good motivation, what he’s approaching is inevitably a very stupid way to do it, because he’d rather do that on his own than talk to someone and ask for help, and he knows that crossdressing works for him because he’s really hot as a girl.

Ranma is a guy who would rather temporarily be a girl than confront the way he’s being a crappy guy.

Then you might find that when you navigate that thought to its end point, you’re not actually bothered by kissing someone who considers themselves a boy if you think they’re hot.

There are some defenses at this point, some mental structures that can support people to consider this: That hey, it’s not a matter of finding Ranma’s body hot, the fact he’s a guy is the thing I find directly unappealing, and that can be useful for grappling with your heterosexuality and finding there are things about gender that you care about, and it’s not just bodies. But then that’s just one part of the hard mode that Ranma can introduce into your thinking, which is almost the obvious one of:

Conclusion

Look, I’ve said in the past that Ranma 1/2 is not a very queer text. I think the way I’d rephrase this though is that Ranma 1/2 is not a very intentionally queer text. It is a story that was written by someone pretty isolated from the queer culture of my now who kind of just unthinkingly stumbled her way into talking about a host of issues relating to queerness that also, because the story was magical and comedic, got to very successfully interrogate a whole host of different ideas about how boys are boys, how boys might kiss boys, and also, importantly, how sometimes boys aren’t boys at all.

There’s a lot of stuff we bring to the conversation about queerness in Ranma 1/2, but don’t let that diminish your joy in the work. It started the conversation, but you’re the one who saw something brilliant and special in it.

Alright first off, first impression of him.

His introduction was literally golden. From his and Martina's Akira reference to Yomi fake-sobbing before coldly ordering Seth to be executed. I was kicking my feet. He immediately shot to my top favorite (before being kicked down again by Yuma and Makoto) but I absolutely enjoyed what an evil little gremlin he was from the very beginning. Honestly, one of the best introductions of a villain I've ever seen.

Next, headcanons. I think he was a theatre kid in high school. I'm saying this from experience. Every theatre kid goes through a little phase where they're evil and flamboyant it comes with the title. Yomi's just went on a little too long, silly silly boy. OH and I think he has chew toys. Being evil is stressful he's gotta chew on smth or else he'll just take it out on an underling, yk?

As for complaints and praise... weeeell, I thought his takedown was a little... anti-climatic? Like on the one hand, I'm very happy for Martina to get to send him to jail. You go girl. But also, he just sorta... accepts being arrested? I wanted him to resist more. Kicking scratching and screaming, yk?? He did a little of that but not much. And I wish we'd seen him in the epilogue, maybe as a small little shot of him in jail being all pouty. As for praise, I really love how fun-to-hate he is. The game makes it very clear he's horrible and you can't really sympathize with him, but also, he's just so fun to watch. Like. What's wrong with him *twirls hair*

Favorite pairing, hmmmmmmmmmm. Initially it was Makoyomi, but rn it's a three-way tie between Makoyomi, Yomiakou, and Hellxander. These dynamics are all just... really fascinating in all honesty. I want to study them. I'm so glad this fandom enjoys toxic yaoi I think I would go insane if there wasn't a plethora of content for these weirdos.

And finally, my overall opinion. He's my wife. My evil scrunkly meow meow. I'm gonna put a collar on him and cook him a yummy dinner while he's chained to a chair. Also his English VA is amazing and did a wonderful job making Yomi iconic, I'm planning on playing Raincode again but with JP voices to compare. He's the silliest villain I've ever seen. They did a great job with his writing, I think. He just, immediately grabs you- and when you look deeper into him it's genuinely so interesting and fun.

Yomi x Seth is definitely an interesting ship for me. I don't actively think about it but when I come across content of them, my brain goes "fuck yeah". Sadly their interactions don't give us much to go off of as much as other pairs, but it's always a joy to see.

Hellxander. My beloved. Finding Fake!Zilch in the factory and hearing him ramble about Yomi was eye opening. Kodaka did not need to have that in there but it's there and it's amazing. I wish Yomi had a line or something about Zilch, I want to know how he feels about the guy. Was it a parasocial type of thing??? Was Yomi leading him along??? Please Kodaka. honestly that seems like some pretty solid advice. I feel like the weight/body type standard is a bit different now and I *think*body hair expectations have become a bit more relaxed (but honestly not a ton). But idk I was never that outgoing in highschool and wasn't really into putting myself out there is a dating way for like most of it so I did end up being kinda inexperienced with all that (19 now).

Being outgoing really does make a world of difference with all of this. I never rly had anyone (that I knew of) explicitly interested in me in hs and i used to think there was something wrong with me as a result, but looking back I was a bit closed off and honestly maybe not quite ready for "hotgirl" things. Now I do feel a bit silly for having fomo about all that since hs is just 4 years and you do have your whole life do crazy shit and get dick and all lol.

the other thing i'll say is that your life will end up mirroring the attitudes of the other people around you. this has been one of the hardest things i've had to learn as i've grown up.

if you want to be successful, you have to surround yourself with ambitious people. i don't mean that you need to surround yourself with douchebags and bougie fucks -- just surround yourself with people who are constantly seeking ways to progress and to build a better life.

because the opposite can also be true. if you want to be successful, but you surround yourself with people who can't take personal responsibility and blame institutional bias and social structures for everything that's wrong in their lives, you will quickly find yourself going nowhere. even if you want more for yourself, you will hold yourself back by allowing the people around you to validate and reinforce habits of learned helplessness.

life sucks and it's unfair. institutional biases do exist. social structures are flawed. not everyone starts with the same advantages, and some people start in life being severely disadvantaged by the way our society's framework has been built. all of these things are true. but the takeaway from that can't be "progress can never happen while these structures are in place, so i'm not floundering, i'm just being held back by things i can't control and it's not my fault." it has to be closer to "despite the obstacles in my path, i am determined to find a way inside in order to make life better for myself and the people around me."

the same principle is true for social interactions.

if you want to do Hot Girl(TM) things, you don't necessarily need to surround yourself with already-established Hot Girls(TM). but you should surround yourself with people who are more willing to take risks, people who want to meet new people or do new things. you don't have to be a social butterfly. you just need to be willing to step outside your comfort zone and surround yourself with people who want to do the same.

one of the groups i ran in during high school was the lit mag crew. it was the only social circle i had that yielded me no dick -- but that was okay, because i was part of the lit magazine because i wanted to write and be involved with other writers; it had nothing to do with my Hot Girl(TM) shit and everything to do with my own personal self-fulfillment. and i remember those girls (because the lit mag was primarily girls and gay guys LMAO) being so jealous of me and my lifestyle at the time, but none of them ever took me up on any offer i gave them to come hang out with other people. i tried to throw them a lifeline, and they never took it; they stayed in their lit clique and became increasingly bitter over time over the fact that boys didn't like them.

then senior year came along. and my punk/metal buddy dan took an interest in my lit friend laura. laura was one of the ones who was always complaining that boys didn't like her. i begged her to at least talk to him -- and, when she finally did, the two of them discovered that they had less in common than dan thought they did BUT since they were both my mutual friends, they at least had a similar sense of humor and taste in music and stuff. so, instead of those two getting together romantically, laura just got absorbed into our friend group. and within that school year, laura ended up with a boyfriend who didn't even go to our school, but who laura would've never met if not for me pushing her to talk to dan initially.

taking the tiniest step outside your comfort zone can make a huge difference. you need to find people who will enable you to do that.

just make friends with the women around you. start there. the other women in your life will be your greatest champions and strongest allies. there does not exist a Hot Girl(TM) on the planet who doesn't have an army of women friends behind her.

Satoru and Suguru are best friends, and it is highly implied that their relationship has romantic undertones.

Satoru's canon theme song by the comic author is "Shame on Me" by Avicii, which has many romantic lyrics.

Suguru wears Gojo Kesa as an adult, or a Buddhist monk outfit just because it is a "Gojo" kesa.

Satoru is from a family of prolific, rich sorcerers (or just an influential, rich and powerful family in the NSR world) who would probably not want a "scandal" if their heir was some flavor of gay. (below is more NSR world main HCs)

This could explain why the Satoru Suguru Shoko gang ran a phony scheme in the NSR world, maybe to escape harsh reality.

Hobie hates Satoru and Suguru for some reason, probably because Satoru is a snobbish rich brat.

I actually love gorey animes and movies so that’s not a bother to me! Don’t know how I feel about “jumped the shark” stories though because the only ones I know really are things like Family Guy or Simpsons that have that trope and I don’t watch those shows really anymore (and they are an entirely different feel from a continuous narrative story).

Anyway you can keep sending this stuff in! I like learning stuff second hand for some reason, it’s a lot of fun! (I know a LOT more about One Piece than I should thanks to tiktok and one movie I watched not realizing it was part of a series lol)

Gonna try and give feedback to ALL points because I realized I completely forgot to answer something on your last ask because I skipped a sentence when rereading (about Eve and Nanami).

-Satoru/Suguru relationship: Oh cool! What if they were in a QPR? That would be neat for some reason lol! Also, could only think of the lesbian version of “and they were best friends” hehehe. But good for them (maybe, unless they are doomed by the narrative).

-Satoru theme song: This song has a really good beat to it! Only Avicii song I knew before was “Hey Brother” so this was a complete shift in what I thought the beat of the song was gonna be. But it seems to fit well with what I know of the character (could seem to fit better if I knew the more intricate details lol).

-Suguru and Gojo Kesa: Okay that’s actually really funny lol. To me that’s like a guy named Gene wears only jean jackets hehe.

-Satoru family/gayness: I can see that being a thing unfortunately. It would also make sense for Satoru to be from a famous/influential or powerful family as his powers would probably be a family trait and that kind of power (of reality manipulation) would definitely make a family well known and rich.

-Escape reality: Having the three, who all probably have higher-up families because of their powers, does make sense that they grouped together to try and escape their family life. It would also make them less empathetic (sympathetic? idk) to the common people and allow their scheme to continue without really feeling bad about it (because logically it makes sense to them, we are healing you of something no one else could, so you have to give something no one else could, your power).

-Hobie’s hate: Yeah. There’s also the fact the two (3 with Shoko) took advantage of people in vulnerable states for their own selfish reasons. The rich brat personality is just another facet for Hobie to hate.

-Get along (2 of the points): Okay, for some reason I immediately thought of Satoru, Suguru and Shoko (don’t know what their group would be called) would try and get Peni to help them scheme as a technomancer could be really valuable, but kit obviously does not want to trick people and definitely wouldn’t want to do anything related to medical stuff at the moment considering kits pretty recent past.

Miles, Peni, and Yu are hanging out and talking as best as they can with Peni helping out because I can see the three having a lot in common (which allows Yu and Nanami become like unofficially apart of the Arachnikid friend group and probably be really good assets in the Power Revolution). 

But yeah, Peni helping bridge the gap is a nice thing to think about. Even if it is just letting Satoru, Suguru, and Shoko be friendly or at least cordial with the rest of the group. They would mainly be doing their own thing, while Yu and Nanami are actually trying to be friends with everyone.

-Yu and Peni: I love this idea. Especially the thought that Peni could get a kind of older brother figure because of how Yu sees her. Both being in pretty shitty situations (Peni having lost kits dad and Yu being away from all his family with just a single friend) would probably look for a type of familial bond without realizing it. (which also makes me think Yu and Noir would become pretty good friends once they work out the language barrier because of how close Noir and Peni are).

-T-boy Yu: Fuck yeah! (I don’t have much to add since I barely know him, but yeah! T-boy swag!)

-Neopronouns: Those are cool neopronouns! Will try to use them for the rest of this ask when I can! (I will be honest, I keep getting names mixed up because they are all new names to me and I don’t exactly have the names to faces memorized yet lol, so hopefully I don’t use blue for Suguru by accident)

-Eyes: Aw that’s sweet. I can see Satoru not liking blues eyes when blue was younger because… well it’s not common to have multiple eyes (not impossible, but not common) so maybe had some kind of resentment to blues eyes for a while until Suguru kept complimenting them, allowing Satoru to start loving blues eyes (also when I first read that I thought it meant blue as in color and was thinking how would Satoru like Purl’s eyes since they are a pretty blue color when not wearing their sunglasses).

-Space/psychic powers: It’s basically like a combination of Eve and DJSS’ powers which is such a dangerous and powerful combination to have. Which I feel like really fits blue a lot. I can see these powers not being super distinct from each other (like you can tell when Tatiana is using fire vs using time) and so they meld together making a seemingly single type of power instead of two distinct power types (I have no idea how to explain it better than this lol).

-Nanami 30%: OMG THIS! I forgot to address this in my other ask! I had something planned for it too! UGH!

Anyway, I was going to say I don’t think people would make fun of Nanami for his skin condition (I think that was how it was worded in the ask) but they do compare him to Eve, only because Eve is probably like the only person with this kind of condition that the people around Nanami know about. It would be like someone with vitiligo always being compared to Micheal Jackson because it isn’t a common skin condition that a lot of people would have heard of outside of a celebrity.

So yeah, I can definitely see Nanami being really annoyed with the constant comparisons and actively trying to hide his condition for a long while before coming to terms with it. It was more of an annoyance to hear and to hide the condition than anything else. 

Once he got to Nueva York, he might not have been ALLOWED to hide his condition. Maybe he had “bad behaviour” (it wasn’t actually bad, he just kept using his powers thinking it was fine but the counselors had to keep stopping him) and so he lost some privileges like hair dye and makeup. 

Thankfully the people around him didn’t care all that much. There were definitely comments comparing him to Eve (especially from Pav who explained how he is related to Eve) that annoyed Nanami, but he explained his feelings and the group apologizes because they didn’t know (maybe him and Pav’s relationship starts off a bit rocky because of this connection and Nanami having a hard time dissociating his feelings for his condition and Eve from Pav).

After Nanami gets hair dye and makeup privileges back, I do think the gang would encourage him to not hide it again and so he doesn’t (still has to grow out his hair though to get the 30% to outgrow the dye)

-Smoko Shoko (and Noir, 2 points): Oh her plant parts are absolutely hating the smoke she puts into her body, but I don’t think the glass part would be as affected as something more organic (the glass is organic as well but to a lesser degree like Tatiana’s rock body or Matvey’s metallic body). I wonder if her healing powers could help reduce any problems she might have with being a heavy smoker, that would be a neat thing to be able to do!

Her and Noir, when given access to go out for good behaviour, go and have a smoke together. They can’t really communicate without Peni or without their phones to translate stuff, but they just sit down at a park or beach and watch the sunset together silently as they smoke (they definitely are not allowed to smoke on Nueva York premises so they get a lot of their smoking done in this small time frame).

SatoSugu and GhostFlower (didn’t know that was their ship name, cute!) being happy and annoying while Pav is sad and alone in Nueva York missing Gaya (you better believe they become the most annoying when reunited because of the time they were forced apart).

Trans Shoko? Nice :3 (also for some reason like the idea of her being a part of SatoSugu but in a queer platonic way. Like they are also dating her but in an emotional sense while SatoSugu are also just super gay for each other).

Excellent and often HYSTERICAL prose, especially from Lucius, and I want to live in Stede's gay commune-house with the crew SO badly.

HE'S TRANS. hes a transman, but he still likes to explore his gender identity trough clothes n shit. basically, I wanna see him in a dress

hes done top surgery, 2 horizontal scars below his pecs and his nipples are heart shaped. cuz i think thats cute

hes not particularly interested in bottom surgery, but he DOES have a glorious t-dick. my son is packin ;)

bob is like a disney princess, and will charm any animals that come in contact with him. even that bear that one time. and that shark while he was drunk. he will fight spiders however, verbally

he knows how to play the guitar, but he also wants to learn the drums

bob was on puberty blockers when he was around 14 and started testosterone when he turned 17. His top surgery was his 21st birthday present

what's your opinion on homophobic actors ? for example the love by chance cast and their scandal with earth? there might be other homophobic ones idk about but I was just using that as a example I still want you're overall thoughts! would you still watch their stuff? or follow them? or another example actors admiting they used bl as a way for clout some people think thats okay and its justified would you agree?

In general, I think it's difficult to understand any celebrity's actual feelings on anything. 

 Sometimes it may not be safe for them to express their true opinion, because of image, brand, business, studio, agency, management, or family concerns or constraints. They may be more supportive or less supportive than we will ever know. Anything that approaches bullying is going to be even more complex because there are so many elements, perspectives, and entities involved. (Although I will always side with the victim.) 

With regards to interview, vlog, or variety show missteps and misspeaks, a lot of BL actors are BABIES, like so young. Tell me you didn't make a stupid fucking idiot statement when you were in your late teens and early 20s. Well, you CAN tell me you didn't, but I won't believe you. I certainly did. I was a pretty lousy human for a while. Queer af but still lousy. 

And a bunch of queers from other countries jumping in and attacking is surely going to change baby boy’s tiny mind... right? Yeah, no. No, it’s not. Multiple studies have shown that attacking someone only drives them into a corner and hardens their sentiments. 

Honestly? I don't think it's ever a good idea to make a hero out of an actor... they are, after all, ACTORS. I mean, come on, you must have meet some of the breed? 

Make a hero of the BL character he portrayed, certainly! But not the actor for goodness sake. He’s only an actor, after all. 

Celebrity turns people... odd. Or maybe it's just that the type of personality that seeks celebrity is innately suspicious? At least to this curmudgeonly introvert. (The fact that I all too often end up dating the fuckers is my terrible judgement and wicked bad taste.)

Where was I?

In most of these cases netizens take everything out of context, or at the very least hugely exaggerate. People pick camps. Yes there are certainly bad apples, but I think about this with kpop a lot, sometimes it's all shades of grey and no celebrity is as evil, or as good, as we want them to be. They're mostly just gloriously shiny narcissistic pricks (affectionate).

Particularly with something like homophobia, the context of identity (or identity erasure or abuse) is very culture specific. With BL we are often talking about places where, until recently, they didn’t even have a word for gay. I don't like to get outraged in general, it's exhausting. But to get outraged about something that some pretty kid said or did, in a language I don't speak, born and raised in a culture I did not grow up in, to a family dynamic I cannot comprehend?

It seems like, considering all the grey areas, I am not really equip to judge.

It's not the same thing, but I'm a long time melody and I often think about what happened to Ilhoon. As an outsider what he went through seems absolutely insane. But I've never lived in South Korea. What the hell do I know? I can only make a judgement call from my safe little nest where (currently) weed is legal and has been for ages. I guess, at the very least being in Kpop should have taught Ilhoon how to be careful enough not to get caught? 

And I guess that's were I do judge.

If the actor is homophobic (by any standards), and acts in BLs, at the very least he shouldn't have gotten his tiny hypocritical arse caught out, now should he? Tut tut on the brand management, fella. Practice a little circumspection.

Mostly when one of these stories crosses my radar I just feel sad. And I don't wanna feel that way around BL (or Kpop for that matter), so I try not to even register it's happening.

There are major cultural issues in play here, and when this kind of thing happens to an idol on the streets of Seoul, I’d venture to say, there’s society wide systemic problems at the root of of this kind of homophobia, that the homophobe’s are manifesting - like symptoms of a disease. Sure you can treat the pox (with a damp wet white towel, perhaps?), but darlings don’t you think it’s about time we developed a vaccine? (And maybe I think that’s kinda what BL and pop culture can do to culture, if it gets normalized enough.) 

But currently, with these homophobic incidents? We all lose, and we are all to be pitied because of it. 

I love BL because it leads with love, and that’s the best I can practice at this point in my life. Try to talk more about positive BL dramas and less about negative BL actor drama. Try to be a little more loving and a little less outraged. 

That’s it, I don’t have a solution, sorry. Just... perseverance, I guess? su su na and all that.
