A young Joseph's physique is intended for running, jumping, and pulling heavy objects.

As he matures, he gets a little heavier, and therefore a bit slower. Nothing pisses him off more than thinking of his glory days when he could chase his darling as much as he pleased- literally.

He's a chaser emotionally, sure, but he's better at it physically. It's a bit unfair, Joseph was lazy with his hamon training, but excels in most athletics. He's well rounded, so he could've done a lot with his body back then, but didn't.

He just couldn't be assed to help out most of the time, and why would he? Whatever anybody else is doing has nothing to do with him, why's it his responsibility to help out just 'cause he's more athletically inclined? Jeeeez.

He's gotten a bit more empathetic in his 'old' age- but not by a lot. Joseph's still very obsession-oriented. He'd do anything you wanted. He'll carry your bags, move your sofa up five flights of stairs, run to the other side of the city to buy you something you need right this instant and don't have time to retrieve yourself- anything's fair game. His body's yours! As long as, you know. You give yourself entirely to Joseph and don't complain about how touchy and needy he is.

It's such a shame that time in his life has passed. He's not the young, energetic man he used to be. He gets tired after a few rounds of chase when he could previously do dozens, he groans at the idea of getting up after he's already sat down, he's an old man. An old man that just can't keep his hands off of you, even if you swat him away.

Joseph loves to make himself physically younger with hamon- it's kinda cheating, but it also kinda isn't. He can chase you around without pulling something this way! Hey, come on, it's a joke, he isn't THAT old. He can chase you just fine when he's older! Joseph's just a bit hung up on how easy it was when he was younger when he could just jump over whatever desk you knocked over to get in his way.

Now that he can't just clear whatever poor furniture you decided needed to die, Joseph is forced to use his brain, which is a thousand times less fun for both parties. Joseph doesn't wanna thiiiink, he wants to chase! He wants to catch! He wants to see his darling underneath him on the ground, whining and kicking and screaming and possibly crying- but that's off topic. He doesn't want to have to figure out what to do to get his prey, he wants his darling to get worn out and "admit" they want to stop playing and just cuddle already.

He's always thought of himself as pretty smart, so it kind of drives him up the wall when he can't find his darling. No, he's not using Hermit Purple just yet. It's not fun if he knows exactly where you are from the beginning! It's fun when he gets the satisfaction of finding you allll by himself, when he can pull you out by your ankles and pretend he's going to punish you.... oh, I'm kidding. He's absolutely going to punish you for trying to pull a fast one on him. Hide and seek is only fun when both parties are aware they're playing.

There are circumstances where Joseph will use Hermit Purple from the beginning. He's not stupid, he can tell when you're genuinely trying to escape and aren't just running from him. If you manage to get out of his sight, and Joseph has finally calmed down from the panic of not seeing you right next to him first thing in the morning, all you can really do is pray you look good while you're running.

Joseph's punishments are pretty bad. He's fine with breaking your legs because he can afford any and all medical care you'll need after he snaps them. Most of his punishments are physical and directly hinder your chances of escaping.

With Joseph, if you don't escape the first time you try, any attempts after just become more and more futile.

He's still got morals though. He isn't a spouse-beater. He won't give you a shiner or any visible bruises. He just knows that sometimes, spanking works best. You know, spanking as in breaking something, or actually spanking. If whatever you did isn't that bad, you'll get away with only thirty spanks or so. If you almost got out... pray you get a nice nurse this time, and not Suzi Q wearing a nurse costume.

there are a lot of reasons i'm really, really impressed by how well sdmi portrayed the dynamic of an abusive relationship with pericles and ricky, and one of the big ones is how accurately they show what it looks like when abuse starts to escalate.

the extent of that is yet another thing that'll take a longpost of its own to go into, because it spans like.... the entire arc of their relationship in the show. but one thing that stands out to me in particular is their portrayal of the massive red flag that is a partner trotting out bigoted behavior against a group you're in. especially insults, and especially directed right at you.

this show has a LOT of fatphobia, jesus christ does it ever, and there are certainly some fatphobic tropes going on with ricky; but i've always been surprised and impressed by how many of the nastier ones they avoided, especially considering his role in the story and what his arc is about.

he is a major, nuanced character whose trauma is treated with full weight and sincerity. it's implied that his body type changed the way it did due to the trauma he went through when he was younger, and the ensuing mental illness, which is a pretty realistic experience for a lot of people. the things that happen to him are played for full tragedy and horror, when it would have been so, so easy for them to make light of it because Tee Hee Fat Guy and Tee Hee Male Abuse Victims Funnee. despite how his whole thing involves corporate greed, they don't go the route of portraying him as Gluttonous and Hedonistic; if anything he is very obviously not using all that money for even basic physical self-care, and the only time we ever see him eating anything it's when he's drinking wine grape juice with pericles. which, like, there's issues to be unpacked with that too, but jesus christ it's an improvement over what usually happens with characters like him.

he's a fat queer man who isn't degendered or made feminine in a mocking and/or predatory way. (there's nothing wrong with feminine fat queer men and they need more non-shitty rep, please and thank you god, but there is a lot of nastiness in the tropes they're often used for in mainstream media, and one of those tropes is when people consider 'fat queer man' and 'masc' to be oxymorons.) no one ever once calls him ugly; if anything multiple people in his life think he's attractive and desirable, for better or for worse. no one body-shames him. and no one ever mentions his weight.

except pericles.

'The Horrible Herd' and 'The Devouring' are two halves of a whole here, re: escalation of abuse. 'Devouring' is when the abuser goes full mask off and shit hits the fan; 'Horrible Herd' is the wind-up before the punch. HH is when ricky realizes things are getting Bad and he needs to put a stop to this now, and Devouring shows what happens when he tries, because by the point where it's gotten bad enough to give him a wakeup call it's already too late. it's how abusive relationships tend to go, and it's chillingly accurate.

and what's one of the things pericles says during Horrible Herd when that punch is winding up? something no one's ever said before now, including him? 'you pudding-faced dummkopf.'

he body-shames him. he insults his weight, and that's a major turning point. bigotry is something that's often there to some degree from the start, but not always, because some abusers are good at hiding things like that until they're confident they've got you where they want you. the message with ricky and pericles is loud and clear: when this happens, the walls are dripping blood. get out.

I started reading Lundy Bancroft’s Why Does He Do That?

I had a dream the other night about a male family member of mine long since passed. I dreamt I found his ex-wife’s social media accounts and she said he abused her physically when they were together/he was alive and I woke up and thought “that wouldn’t surprise me if it was true, considering (other male family members) and a few Other Things. But I woke up and I was like, okay it’s time to read this book now. The realization or dream didn’t really even upset me that much, honestly.

I’ll be reading it slowly though. It’s already hitting home. I never finished The Body Keeps The Score, and I DO intend to finish it, but maybe not at the same time as WDHDT? because otherwise I might go Insane

you know. i was feeling bad today, convinced myself i was exaggerating everything and they probably didn't actually hurt me at all, and maybe i was just trying to make up things to be upset about. but then they violated a small boundary that i've expressed over and over again to them and when i pointed it out, it sparked a tense convo, which escalated to them pulling the "because i'm stupid and can't do anything right." then they yelled at me to not help them when i brought a tupperware over for their leftovers. now they're in the car "just to sit," but they brought the keys, which is the kind of thing they do every time we argue (that is, a gesture that implies they're not safe or they're on the verge of doing something impulsive to hurt themself). so at the very least there's definitely emotional abuse happening. right? that's what that is. am i crazy?

I found my original timeline for milo and edited a few things, switching up his story a smidge. if you're interested in liminal spaces....... teehee...... heed the trigger warnings.......

Birth - Todd and Shannon Bishop welcome their second child, who they name Adam. His older sister, Caitlyn, is 5 years his senior and is immediately enamored of her little brother. She is diligent in helping her parents care for this boy. The Bishop family lives in the small town of Nimilla, Missouri, and Todd is the only, and highly esteemed, pastor of the local Church.

5 - This will be the first memory Adam has of his drunk father hitting his mother, though it had long been happening even before his birth. It is his first glimpse into the reality that his father is not the decent holy man that many believe him to be.

6 - Adam befriends another boy in the first grade. Isaiah becomes his first, and only, friend as long as he is in Nimilla.

8 - One night, after a violent and destructive fight between Todd and Shannon, Todd takes Caitlyn from her bed and drags her out of the house. Adam, despite being afraid and concerned for his mother who had gone to bed weeping, follows his father and sister into the woods past his backyard. What he witnesses that night is only the first of a long series of horrifying events in his life and can only be described as despicable. Ignorant to what goes on for many years even after this night, Adam later realizes that this night was the first time Todd had tried to give something permission to possess an innocent person, this time being Caitlyn. When the possession does not happen, Todd grows furious and unhinged, so much so that he proceeds to beat his oldest child. Young, and terrified, Adam flees back to his house. In the morning, Caitlyn is declared missing and, later, dead. The mystery around her death is no mystery to Adam, who will be haunted by this memory forever. The Bishop family, specifically Adam and Shannon, are devastated.

10 - Two years after the death of his sister, Adam is the one dragged from his bed one night and submitted to a cult ritual conducted by his own father, though this time Adam is successfully possessed by the entity that his father had been desperate to contain and control. This possession will trigger in Adam hallucinations, dissociation, and the ability to hop through realities into what he refers to as the Spaces. 

11 - During an episode where he is caught in the Spaces, Adam is startled to discover another person with him, which has not happened in the entire year that he has been experiencing his possession. They talk, though Adam is still afraid of what it means that she is there and also the Spaces themselves. Before she leaves, the girl gives him what Adam learns is an iPod, which contains music in it. This will become his most prized possession and will send him spiralling into the one escape he has, music.

12 - When the few songs on the iPod become not enough to satisfy Adam’s love for music anymore, he finds himself drawn to create his own. He begins to teach himself how to play the piano at his father’s church, though he has few resources to do so. It is his mother who teaches him how to read sheet music when she discovers him trying to play; she also is the one to secretly purchase for him his own very small keyboard.

13 - Adam discovers the Internet, but does not have access to it for very long. He finds that the only time he can use it is late into the night, so he begins watching YouTube videos on his very small, cheap cell phone (which he is only to use to contact his father in an emergency). He discovers more music and even starts watching tutorials on how to create music so that he can better his own songs. 

14 - Adam buys his own laptop in secret so that he can start trying to make real music. He begins putting out short snippets of songs he’s written on YouTube under the username musicsaves212. During this time, he continues to witness his father’s abuse toward his mother and is subjected to cruel verbal and emotional treatment himself, as well as his own mental decline from his possession.

16 - Adam is woken up in the middle of the night by his father fighting with his mother. Unbeknownst to them both, he sneaks out to check on his mother, who he can hear crying. Very quickly, the fight escalates and Adam watches helplessly as his father retreats into the kitchen. When he returns, Adam is forced to watch his father cruelly and mercilessly murder his mother in their living room. When Adam begins to cry, Todd finally catches sight of him and lunges toward the boy. Horrified and shocked by what he’s just witnessed, Adam runs from his childhood home and is thrown into the Spaces.

17 - When Adam emerges from the Spaces again, he is shocked to discover that he had been in there for five months and his father has given the same lie he had for Caitlyn several years before: Adam has gone missing, though this time Todd appears to be searching for him. Several townspeople spot and recognize him, though Adam realizes very quickly that if his father finds him, he will likely be given the same fate as his mother and sister before him. So he flees Nimilla.

17 - For the next several days, Adam begins a trek away from Missouri. He hops trains, stows away in semi trucks, walks and hitchhikes - anything to get him away from his father and that town. After a week, he finds himself outside of New York and decides that the city is where he wants to go. 

18 - Adam changes his name to Milo McKiernan. He is unhoused, but has begun job hopping to get enough money to get himself a new laptop and eventually a guitar. He begins writing music again and even posting to social media, though he remains anonymous by keeping his face covered when he does upload content. 

20 - Milo’s music is discovered by a music producer. It lands Milo an offer to work at Manhattan-based, Agony Records. Initially, he is wary because he does not want his father to discover his whereabouts, but it doesn’t take long for his love for music (and need for a roof over his head) to take precedence over his concerns. Despite what appears to be a switch into the right (and safe) direction, Milo continues to suffer from the effects of his possession. During his initial time working at Agony, he is mentored by Zander Riles, the very producer who'd discovered him.

thinking about dio v and charles interacting, of all people

like i genuinely think dio sees a bit of his past, younger self in charles. he sees someone truly passionate about law but who has, in his own ways—through money, fame, time—become more disconnected to it. maybe not entirely so in charles’s case, but that same spark he had fresh out of law school isn’t burning as bright anymore.

but it’s interesting, dio remarks, because are they not both lawyers-turned-conmen? dio’s done his homework, he knows charles lies to the band for their own sake, but that’s just part of the job, isn’t it charlie? they’ve both done less-than-admirable things in their times since being regular old lawyers, but that’s how they got ahead. that’s how they got to this point. charles can ignore or deny it all he wants, and dio says he knows charles could kick his ass—but he won’t, because it’s so much easier to tell someone else to do it, to keep your own hands clean.

idk! i was inspired by a lot of different things when i created dio v but parallels to charles was always a big one, even if they were meant to be subtle. i think you could argue if the money and fame went to charles’s head he’d be like melmord, but i think melm is more…..conniving? than that? i feel like if melm’s plan had succeeded he wouldn’t keep up the “cool hip boss” persona forever, but the band would still listen to him regardless bc they don’t know any better. i get the sense melmord was more obviously faking any sort of attachment to the band, but in dio v’s case, he DEFINITELY plays up the “for the benefit of others” angle. he does what he does out of the goodness of his heart, and definitely not the thousands of dollars per session.

all that said let me be abundantly clear that charles DOES genuinely care about the band, even if he does some underhanded things for their sake. dio v does not care about his clients for the psychic readings, but he DID care about his clients when he was doing pro bono defense work a lifetime ago.
