M9 Reunion thoughts:

- I was woefully unprepared for Beau finding Imogen attractive. I am deceased.

- I need a convergence of all three parties bc: Beau, Yasha, Imogen, Fearne. Jester and Fearne. Fearne and Caduceus. Fjord and Chet meeting. Scanlan and Jester meeting. Vex being endlessly amused. Percy being endlessly annoyed. Keyleth and Caduceus and Pike meeting. Yasha and Grog arm wrestling.

Final thoughts: now that the M9 knows of the threat ruidis poses, I hope we get more cameos in campaign 3 with them. Imogen deserves the chance to meet Beauyasha. And so does Fearne. I hope we get a wedding oneshot sooon! I’d also love to see more of Luc. I was hoping we’d see the Wildmother send both Fjord and Caduceus the same warning the Changebringer and Dawnfather sent FCG and Deanna, hopefully that’s expanded soon.

I really love how different everyone’s characters are from the previous campaign

Liam spent both c1 and c2 as an angsty boi but now he’s just a guy! I love Orym! He’s sweet, he just wants to help, he loves his friends. Both Caleb and Vax could get very in their heads about their own trauma, afraid to hurt those around them. Orym knows he can protect those around him and will constantly risk himself to do so

Sam spent c2 as someone who was traumatized and torn from her family and turned into her worst fear. She was distrusting of others and never shared and had sticky fingers and probably needed therapy. Now FCG is the team’s therapist! They have trauma of their own and it’ll probably come up at some point how he’s handling it, but he really just wants to help, and wants everyone to share so he can give them a supporting robotic shoulder to cry on

Beau was also very closed off and abrasive, people didn’t like her much and she had to learn how to be nice. While Laudna is similar in that people don’t really like her, she’s just so nice! She finds joy in everything! She just wants to have friends after so many years of being lonely and as soon as she finds friends, she is SO enthusiastic and caring about it, joking with them and looking out for them

Laura made Jester to really let her id run wild. No impulse control, no filter, but somehow always saying exactly what everyone needed to hear. She makes people feel welcome even if she can be a bit intrusive. She wants to spread joy and chaos! She just wants to see the world. Imogen is almost the polar opposite. So far, she has been the most reserved and closed off of these new characters. She doesn’t share anything about herself, not willingly at least, not until it’s pried out of her. She’s a bit distrusting, and has very little patience when she’s crossed. She’s looking for answers and will do what she has to to get them. It’s so delightful to see Laura take on a character with a bit of a dark side like this because Jester was so different!

People have said that Ashton is similar to Mollymauk and Taliesin is leaning into a character that he didn’t get a chance to play much, and I kind of see it, but he’s also different. Caduceus was quiet, stoic, a bit judgmental, but also there for a higher purpose and to help his friends. We’re not really sure what Ashton is looking for, besides work and money, but I really just think they want somewhere to fit. And sure, he likes money, he gets into scrapes, he sometimes pisses off the wrong person but I think most importantly they are kind and can be selfless for those he deems worthy. They look out for FCG above all else, they got breakfast sandwiches for the rest of the group. He doesn’t like people who are unkind (IE their grudge against bertrand, saying it’s a dick move to steal copper from someone, etc.) The thing about Molly is that even though he could be nice he was a bit of a selfish asshole and he knew it, so I do think Ashton is different in that sense. I think Ashton knows they can be an asshole but still tries to bring good into the world

And Fearne. Oh, Fearne.....Ashley going from quiet, reserved, but sweet Yasha to this absolutely unhinged Faun. She really said please can I never fail a wisdom save ever again by going druid. Fearne is SO intuitive. She knows exactly what to say to cheer people up, she knows when they need cheering up. She also knows exactly what to say to unsettle people. They are similar, but Yasha’s intimidation came from her strength and blatant threats, while Fearne’s comes from her unhinged ability to make people unsure if she really likes you or if she’s going to try to kill you in your sleep, and I think that’s beautiful. Yasha was very thoughtful, only speaking when she was comfortable and when she had something to say. Fearne has zero impulse control and always says or does the first thing she wants to at any given time and leans into whatever happens next.

I cannot wait to meet Travis’s real new character and I hope it’s something none of us are expecting

Critical Role Fic Masterlist [August 1st-August 31st]

WOOF. What a month. Not an exceptionally great one for Ye Olde Depression, but I guess I went the Hemmingway in dealing with it. I found a neat word tracking app, but I only started it midway through the month, but just from HALF the month, I racked up 50k+ words. ...Yeah.

Anyway! For the record, I’m separating out the flashfic featured in paper moon and tinsel stars here on my masterlist for ease of access for people who might only want to read specific ships/characters, since the anthology is, uh, poorly organized. I like titles. It’s a thing.

This was also the month of the Tombtaker Hostage Situation and 90% of my bad things happen bingo prompts. I’m doing Whumptober next month so maybe I’ll cool it on the dark stuff in September (probably not).

C3E06 mini reaction

I was sad and hormonal on my period so I watched three hours last night before I crashed.  Didn’t take any notes, so a bunch of this is going to be from recollection.

1) I like Ashton now!  e5 I was really warming up, and I full on like them now.  Very happy, because this means that I like the entire roster.  I admit, I’m not feeling as intrigued as I did with everyone as I did in C2, but I’m sure that’s coming from a case of knowing how C2 ends up, whereas C3 we’re still in the messy beginning.  I can’t remember how I felt with the C2 cast within watching 6 episodes, and with a rewatch obviously you’ve got all the info already.

2) It’s very odd the different levels of ‘open’ for this group, especially comparing to C2.  On the one hand, it’s really nice that they are being upfront with each other, at least somewhat, it gives it almost a stilted feeling at times?  Again though, this is episode SIX.  I’m sure in another ten/twenty episodes they’ll be flowing as smoothly as they were in C1 and C2.  It’s the difficulty in watching on a weekly basis versus binging the episodes.  A whole different experience!

3) Delilah Briarwood patron?  I admit, I didn’t see it coming.  I wonder if that’s why Laudna took her level in sorcerer, is the concept that she doesn’t want to be a warlock and instead wants to perform skills on her own abilities?  How much did Marisha pick this for mechanics versus RP?  CURIOUS

4) While I’m personally not feeling Dorym, I’m also not against it.  And there’s certainly aspects of the RP that leads into it.  We’ll see how it goes, maybe I’ll start feeling it.

5) I am really missing Travis.  It’s only been three episodes without him which really ISN’T that long in the long run, but watching it live makes it feel like forever.  I do wonder what is concept is where they would be meeting his PC ‘later on’ versus at the start.  Also, I completely understand why Matt insisted on having him play SOMEONE at the beginning now.  Imagine if Travis just straight up wasn’t there for the whole first six episodes!  They’re be a hell of an outcry.  Robbie is great, and I certainly don’t mind if he becomes full cast, but it just feels wrong without a main core member there.  There’s a part of me that wonders if Travis is leaving after the intros to go take care of Ronin, because it doesn’t seem like he’s watching just off stage - we would have heard him laugh at some point by now.  (also I still suspect we’re not getting the intro until we meet his PC, which is why I keep expecting it to happen!)

6) Seriously I love Fearne so much, and so much of it is because it’s allowing Ashley to play a much more front and center person who really makes big choices and strong roleplay.  She was so hampered due to Blindspot, and then with Yasha being a deliberately quiet character, so I’m so happy to see her chaos.

7) I really can’t wait to meet the NPC who is going to become the strong center for Matt.  Allura, Gilmore, and Kima were all for C1, Essek for C2, who will be the C3?  Probably won’t meet them for like 50 episodes!

8) Did they struggle this hard with the names before?  The SHITs and The Mighty Nein?  At least in C2, it seemed like the actual play leaned into the name with how frequently they were rolling 9, and it doesn’t seem like any of the players regretted having the name that they did.  Obviously Vox Machina was created after two years and was way more of a IRL group name rather than in IC group name.  I wonder how long it will take for them to create a name...because unlike ExU where they could get away without having one, I feel like we’re going to need one soon enough.
