“My, I fear I misspoke,” Sebastian quickly placates, looking serene as a lamb as he bows his head forward.

“My apologies, sir—my master makes no habit of hunting them, you see. It’s simply a matter of one bear having been disposed of because it was attacking his betrothed. It was a matter of defense.”

Whether that really eases the young boy’s worries is of little concern; primarily for the very reason he’s said, but also for the reason that it if it doesn’t, it’s of no consequence. Whether man or creature, if an any who are unwelcome and unwanted find themselves on the Phantomhive Estate, their lives are forfeit.

“As I mentioned before, however, their appearances are few and far between, so you may rest easy. I, personally, shall be here to ensure your safety—even if it may cost me my life.”

Alright, maybe he is laying things on a little thick, but he’s under no explicit orders to not play around! He is a man with few wants, and one of them is to remain entertained. Though perhaps he needn’t create it himself, after all—his brief hesitance goes noticed, and while of course he has no way of knowing why it occurs to begin with, Sebastian is most interested in figuring out. Perhaps he needs to start setting some of his own plans in motion...

Such thoughts are for a later moment. If there is some manner of deception at work, however, it is masterfully being utilized.

“Once more do you honour us with praise—though I regret to inform you that I do not tend to the gardens myself, most of the time. Such a job is best for a gardener, after all, and our Estate happens to employ one. I shall pass your awe on to him, should we not run into him ourselves.”

Of course, he does fix the garden up about as much as Finny tends to it, but such mishaps are not for Daisuke to know about. Even Sebastian has to admit to a job well done every now and then, anyway, for he hadn't had to intervene this time.

Ah, that sketchbook; Sebastian turns to look down at it, when he hears a page being turned, but all he can glimpse of it is the fresh canvas. Still, it never hurts to be thorough.

“If I may ask, sir, is all that goes into your sketchbook things of interest?” He remembers what was said upon seeing it initially, of course, but with his excitement to bring it out upon seeing the roses, it’s clear that the drawings within are not simply done for information’s sake. “Might you have an aspiration for the arts?”

' eh --- ?! d-disposed ?! ' his gasp is quiet but his jaw-dropped shock is blatant . disposed , as in like trash ? like they threw it away ? shouldn't that have been illegal or something ?! ( not that he had any grounds to debate legality ... ) but those poor bears ! even if hunting was its own sort of sport , to dispatch the lives of animals in a way that sounded not only ruthlessly efficient but even a little brutal , wasteful and unfair ...

' ah , is it --- ciel ? hunting ? bears ? '

he'd be far more alarmed over a fact like this than anything else at this point . the rest in regards to wolves is far more cryptic than daisuke can comprehend . whatever story lingered behind the other's statement isn't one the boy is privy to try to peel back , so he simply nods and accepts the reliable facts that have been given to him : no wolves to worry over , only bears amidst the hunting grounds and the mansion's most efficient bear disposers , who no doubt remained excellent shots even away from them .

' my expectations ... ' what sorts did he have for the likes of the phantomhive manor , anyways ? instead of innocently enjoying this trip , he was here first and foremost to steal . it was work . instead of true art in his sketchbook , it was a well-guised floorplan . the map of his heart was another's mansion ; to suit his expectations would be to let the great phantom thief dark get away with another priceless work of art , despite each and every obstacle that might have been set out for him --- but he couldn't possibly say anything like that .

so daisuke only swallows a little , spittle going down slightly thick . ' ... i don't know if i have any --- um , expectations . '

despite such a lavish upbringing , he carried himself like any ordinary child . without class or atmosphere , far too clumsy and shy to even pretend at a regal pompousness . he demanded nothing , asked for nothing , and was easily awed by the fact he was in a foreign country alone . and yet , the sight of roses in the garden makes his eyes widen and glimmer , and he gasps again --- this time with immediate recognition and a slight rush forward .

' they're open ! ' which was to say they were in bloom , and beautiful . for just a moment , he's forgotten all about the bears . ' these ... are my favorite ! they look so healthy , ' so he marvels for just a moment more before snapping out of it , and turning to another fresh page in his book . ' are they --- yours ? i mean the ... cutting ! and watering --- the care ! '

What influenced your art style? Were there other artists that inspired your style? Animated series? Games? Something else entirely?

Anime and video games were my base influences lol

All I drew as a kid were Pokemon, Sonic and Yugioh characters ✨

I remember also falling in love with the art in the Death Note and DNAngel manga.

And then art classes kinda gave me structure and pushed me past my comfort zones 🤔

I used to worry about not having a unique style, but I just let it be at this point 🤣 it is what is and i just wanna have fun making art 👌

BEL..... if i ask nicely will u tell me about what kind of manga chiyo either has made or wanted to make ✨ it's essential. daisuke's a die hard shoujo manga enjoyer he'll want an autograph immediately 'cause he believes in her n her dreams. no matter the verse or place

i would tell you even if you asked rudely tsun <3 chiyo's never tried her hand at a full-length shoujo manga, but she did publish a few one-shots at the encouragement of one of her seniors. they were pre-cursors to a full-length shounen manga she ended up writing; while they focused on romance, both took place in a historical fantasy setting she would continue to develop and turn into her first series!

her first series may be categorized as a shounen, but the protagonist is still female, and there is an emphasis on cultivating relationships. there's even some romance, though chiyo sure does draw out the tension :' ) the series had a relatively short run but ended exactly where chiyo wanted it to.

chiyo has illustrated a horror one-shot that's released around halloween each year for the past two years, but she doesn't write those stories. she's not as good at that sort of storytelling, but she has a lot of fun working with other writers! and prior to writing her current series, she tended to take on a lot of lil projects, illustrating the graphic novelization of games, books, etc. she'll still do it on occasion, but not nearly as much.

her current long-running series is again a shounen manga, and it's considered a " sequel " to her previous series, though the cast of characters is mostly different with a few returning characters. it's meant to be its own contained story that can be enjoyed without having read her other work, but ofc chiyo puts easter eggs for any old fans <3

Yessss Pixiv is a goldmine of gorgeous art! If I stumble upon an amazing artist on there I can’t stop until I devour their whole catalog! I didn’t know there were such perks/dangers to being subscribed hmmmm 8)c

it really is just crazy for inspiration. Everyone is so talented. Pixiv has this thing where if you bookmark one piece you like while you're subscribed, it recommends 10 more similar pieces for you to check out. So It gets me in lots of trouble because I keep trying to like the recommended pieces, but as soon as I like them it recommends 10 more and keeps going!!!I can never catch up!!!!! It's stupid and funny how actually distressing it is!!!!! Haha but I've gotten a lot of great inspiration that way.

No way, I can’t say it’s weird at all to go through mangas~~ Whole comics must be even harder to make because not only does every panel have to do the job of conveying its own idea but then they have to fit into the composition of the whole page too! It’s a lot to balance all at once! The use of black, white, and greyscale is also a totally different skill from color pieces so there’s a lot that can be learned from mangaka.

Yeah. As someone who wants to be a comic artist as well as illustrator, I feel like it's important to know my references. I feel like I learned a lot by my experience. I listed the pros and cons and good points of the art by series. I almost thought about making youtube videos or something on my findings but script writing is not my forte lmao.

I definitely refer to Sugisaki’s all the time~ I absolutely adore her style, clothes, lines, all of it but also her paneling is out of this world; every page feels like a carefully laid out work of art!

I feel that so hard. Ive also done that so many times. I definitely have my bitter disillusions with sugisaki nowadays, but I can't deny how much she directly inspired my artistic journey. I've thought many times about how each panel feels like a finished piece all on its own, and how I wished I could do that. Getting swept up in her manga feels like a delicious spring breeze where anything can happen. I remember when I did her pro-con list for dnangel, there were sooo many pros that it went off the page. Some of the cons were funny though. She never shows feet and avoids drawing shoes as much as possible. lmao.

Yooo I’m feeling the creepy vibes! That’s the kind of sight that would make me freeze on the spot. A still silhouette with shiny eyes turned my way. @@ I like the effect of the rim light a lot, especilaly how the thickest part is at the top, so even when I look at the rest of the pic, my eyes are still guided back along the lines to that strongest contrast. Your second piece had a lot of references in comparison! :o The goblin quilt worked out though LOL. I see the influence of the low saturation piece the strongest (Can’t stop staring at his gloves. The lighting and colors on them are so cool!!) There’s more of you finding unique value even in chibis for a rendered illustration! Thanks for showing both of these! ^^

I love seeing your process at the bottom with the reference picture. I can definitely see the inspiration. The greens and that strong wind are very prevalent. It's so interesting how the mood in both pieces are different but complimentary. Is it hard getting the shades of colors you want with watercolors? I find it's hard to get a consistent color because I never mix enough of the color I want. Do you have that problem, or do you find ways around it?

Yeah! he's good! I really appreciate his videos. I try to pace them out because I feel like there's SOOOO much knowledge chock full in each video that my brain is overheated after watching just one or two! He comes across as such a dedicated teacher. It's nice to see tips straight from a japanese anime artist in the industry. It's honestly rare content. Apparently he started out drawing yugioh monster cards, too! What a legend.

Not a problem at all. I love sharing resources. I know you didn't really ask for color theory but I had to throw that one in because it's my favorite tutorial. It's so, so thorough, like you said. I'm glad I saved it too cause apparently the artist who made that tutorial isn't a very good person(!?) and has since taken down their tutorial after a bunch of name changes, but that doesn't mean we can't learn from them. Another hidden gem in that folder is a photoshop file of Kwacy's work. I feel like I learned a lot because it's so interesting seeing how a professional layers their art and effects. Really breaking it down, you know? I have no idea if it'll help you as much, but I haven't seen many other tutorial psd files like that and I think it's really somethin'.

Yeah!! I love the versatility of gouache! Transparent or opaque when you need it– I say that but omg does it take a while for me to get used to that opacity.

Oh for sure, i bet going from watercolor to gouache is a huge whiplash. The opaqueness is really what separates it. That makes a lot of sense.

How are you liking yours btw??

Yanno, I've only played with mine a couple of times, but it's really intimidating. They're so thick that it's hard to paint with them unless you water them down, but if you water them down then they lose that opacity and the texture becomes unstable. The blue here is gouache, so you can see what I mean. I mean, it's fine, but it's not exactly the smooth one color matte I was looking for.

I have a hard time figuring out how to use them properly. Is it better to water the whole container slightly before use? I just dont know. I can say though that as far as using them for watercolors though, they're interesting. You can get a really wide array of colors off a single dip of gouache. Ive only tried the one color so far though.

[Personal time~ My grandma taught me how to use oils when she started going blind and gave me her paints. I painted one canvas for a friend and decided I really really preferred watercolor haha. But I’m glad for the experience! Still can’t identify oils by sight to save my life xD]

I don't blame you for not liking oils as much though, they really are tough. Not to mention they take a looooong time to dry. I'm not really that patient. I did a cute oil a while ago of kirby that's still drying, but the whole time I couldn't help but feel digital would be way easier xD I feel like I also enjoy watercolors a lot more. What brand do you use? I got these nice winsdor and newtons but for some reason I still gravitate to those basic oval ones. I've never tried the ones in a tube though. They're expensive so I've never committed :')

I guarantee you I would have improved faster if I’d taken a class, but I hope some of the materials I’ve used over the years can be of use to you too:

Andrew Loomis’ books - I never made it past the first chapters, but those had some great advice.

Youtube - Proko’s bean method. Figure drawing references will greatly improve anatomy and “drawing what you see”. It’s boring imo, so doing just 5-10 minutes a day can keep one from burning out while still seeing improvement. Speed painting videos are a nice way to relax and study.

Will Terrell’s People Drawing series - He’s a humble man with personal advice for artists. I watch his videos when I feel discouraged or lost.

Art, art, art - Whenever I see an artwork that I like, I figure out exactly what pleases me: line thickness, nose shape, finger positions, composition, the way the hair bends in the wind, etc. Then I try to incorporate that specific characteristic into my own art.

I have growing folders of (I’m a bit embarrassed) almost 8,000 pictures, organized by characteristics, for the sole purpose of studying their prettiness. Sometimes we don’t need a tutorial to spell everything out, just an example can help us envision our own works’ potential. Also, staring at pictures is a relaxing way to study too!

And of course, trial and error~ I don’t post my sad, failed paintings or all the weird sketches I make, but they exist and teach a lot!

HAHAHAHA OHHHHH BOY, HERE WE GO

... Okay, but let's start off with Satoshi 'cause that'll probably be less controversial. (Also, any excuse to talk about my boy!)

"everyone but me is wrong about them" - There are very few characters where I'm LITERALLY out here like "I AM THE AUTHORITY ON THIS CHARACTER ACTUALLY, ALL OF YOU ARE WRONG." Satoshi is one of those characters.

"wasted potential" - I mean, he honestly probably was LESS wasted than some other characters in canon (Riku got SO badly effed over by canon, godammit), but that doesn't mean there wasn't still a TON of wasted potential here. I think one of the most disappointing aspects of the ending is that after spending pretty much the entire series suffering and being abused... there's never any meaningful confrontation or catharsis between him and either of his abusers? There's so much more that needed to be explored and addressed there.

"they're like a blorbo to me" - As with Dick Grayson, he's a strong contender for my #1 blorbo.

"deeper than they seem" - I should really just add this one automatically.

"I like them enough to project my own issues onto them" - this is interesting because on the face of it, I don't consider myself particularly similar to Satoshi. I guess it's more that... I connect with his character in a very personal way? And also I think that when you really love a character, there's always a certain danger of projection.

"they got done DIRTY by the fans" - So, fun story. Did I ever tell you guys that I was once so fed up with the DNAngel fandom that I made up a "Victim-Blaming and Abuse Apologism Bingo Card" with all the worst takes I'd seen? No?

... Yeah, I think that says it all.

"didn't get enough screentime" - I mean, he got a fair amount, but there's still SO MUCH MORE I WANTED TO SEE DEVELOPED AND DEALT WITH W/ HIS CHARACTER, GOSHDANGIT.

Jack Seward:

"everyone but me is wrong about them" - I have this very particular reaction to the Jack Seward Discourse where it's like, I hate seeing people say they hate him and he's evil, but I also hate seeing the people who make excuses for him about things that IMO they really shouldn't? Like NO, you are NOT allowed to say you hate him and he should be kicked out of the polycule. But NO, you also should NOT be acting like it's totally fine and non-comment-worthy that he thinks letting Renfield eat kittens is a tempting scientific prospect. Goddamn!! Get it right!!

(Necessary disclaimer that in actuality everyone can and should feel however they like about his character and there are multiple valid takes, etc. etc. But also, mine is the correct one.)

"they're deeper than they seem" - I think there's honestly ENDLESS material to explore with Jack, from the way he interacts with his patients (to both the good and bad), what he represents in terms of the development of psychology, his depression and fears about his own mental health, his low-key mad scientist tendencies (and yet the fact that he has a strong enough conscience to hold himself back from going down that path)... there's SO much there.

"I like them enough to project my own issues onto them" - I honestly relate to Jack a lot, as someone who's struggled with depression for years, and decided to go into psychology partly as a result of that struggle. That doesn't mean I'm down for his dubious psychological ethics, but there's a lot about his core struggle that resonates with me,

"they got done DIRTY by the fans" - I should note that there are also a lot of fans writing really balanced, nuanced, thoughtful posts about him. But hooooo boy, some edges of the discourse can get... interesting.

"Didn't get enough screen time" - in terms of the actual story of Dracula and the need to balance all the different characters, he probably got the correct amount of screentime. But like, I would've been happy for more! He's kind of the polar opposite of what I said about the Joker, in that I probably would happily read a spinoff about whatever shenanigans he gets up to running the asylum and joining a 12-Step Program for Staying on The Mad Scientist Wagon or whatever, even if the rest of the Dracula cast only briefly showed up in it.

im literally so livid right now, heres a list of every phantom thief/phantom thief themed character/media i can think of, just off the top of my head:

- Arsene Lupin, the book series written by Maurice Leblanc, credited with starting the genre

- Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask, yes he counts

- Beyblade, Count Nightfell, admittedly i dont know much about him but i know he Exists

- Bakugan, Phantom Thief Ajit, dont know much about this one either but they Exist

- DnAngel, kinda doubles as a romance anime as well?? kinda

- Medabots, Phantom Renegade

- Star Twinkle Precure, Cure Cosmo starts off as a phantom thief before joining the main cast

Regarding the Phantom Thief AU fic I was writing, yeah I went *completely* off-course and now the fic has its own AU. So to make up for it, what’s your favorite episode involving Kaitou KID? I’ll make a Phantom Thief False adaption to it because you canNOT leave me with a good concept and NOT expect me to make something new out of it. I’ll actually consult you this time so I don’t accidentally make my own AU again-

even though i stole pieces from other phantom thief works such as Kaitou Kid and Cat's Eye, the main piece of media I steal the most from when it comes to Phantom Thief AU is DNAngel. its the most nostalgic for me and also what first got me into the phantom thief genre!

in fact, i had to reread the Magic Kaitou manga bc its been so long since i last read it (watching the anime would take too long for me lol)

but for your answer, I'll go with Chapter 13, Hustler vs. Magician. It stood out to me the first time i read this series and showcases the fun, misdirectiony performance that both PT! Sonic and I love

In my au, Sonic's thieving specialty is in misdirection, drawing the audience's attention towards himself and away from what he doesn't want them to see. While Shadow's better at quiet infiltration, disguise, and espionage, Sonic steals artwork like its a performance first and burglary second! also he lives off the attention

the chapter focuses on Kaito acting like a fool in order to steal the legendary cue, so its a good episode for showcasing Sonic's ability to put on an act

Primarily LOTR, some Hobbit. One Harry Potter drabble that I did for a friend. Absolutely! I love interacting with readers, and a lot of the time, my readers give me great ideas! Positive feedback- even if it's something short or a AHDKSHDIAJAKDL helps me keep going.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Archer's Notes is technically a series, but the entire series minus a few joking moments is very grim. I think it feels hopeless, which fits because I was struggling with an addiction and an abusive relationship at the time. I had to put it on hold while I sorted myself out, at around the same time I put Cold Waters & Colder Elves. Archer's Notes is permanently on hiatus because I honestly don't believe it's good for my mental state, but I am continuing CW&CE, because it's all about climbing out of a hopeless pit, fighting despair, creating new bonds of friendship. Although it is in a darker place atm.

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes, mainly on my fanfiction.net account. I was pretty bad/cringe back then, but I don't think it deserved hate, just constructive criticism. Basically I was called a moron and told I should kill myself. Obviously, I did not do that. However, I did delete several fics and abandoned the account.

Do you write smut?

Yeah, like twice. Both times I was specifically requested to, and felt very uncomfortable.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

No, but I have had an OC stolen before.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Sort of? It was basically a long RP with friends that we wrote down. It never got posted though. And the notebook ended up with another friend who moved out of state.

What’s your all time favorite ship?

I guess Glorestor followed very closely by Bagginshield.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

There's a WIP I haven't put on AO3 I'm calling Nightmares for lack of a better title, and it's technically a Hobbit AU, but it's all worldbuilding and no story lol.

What are your writing strengths?

I would say describing scenery and characters. I've been told I'm good at painting a picture of what places look like and making characters feel real.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Beyond actually getting the words on the page? I'm bad at writing any kind of smut, and I am terrible at run in sentences. I always have to go back and fix them.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I think it can be very fun if done well! For my part, I tend to err on using one or two words here and there rather than full dialogue because I feel it can easily go wrong and potentially be offensive.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I have 2 different favorite completed fics that are my favorites for completely different reasons.

Snakes and Blueberry Pie is a Glorestor fic that was just fun and cute, and I had a lot of fun writing it.

The Wendigo is technically a Glorestor fic with very little romance. It's primarily a horror with a little action in it, and I enjoyed writing it a lot. In fact, I have a sequel in the works I hope to finish one of these days.

Crossover Fic Recs

Hey, saw your post for some fic recs! Unfortunately I can't continue the wonderful thread of reblogs because I wish to remain anonymous, but here have some cool crossovers that I didn't see get rec'd yet :D (you can either post this or add it to the reblogs, I don't mind either way)

Just Another Meteor Freak [500k words, complete] (and it's sequel, which is unfortunately incomplete) is a Smallville/DP crossover that's absolutely a fantastic read and I cannot recommend it enough, it's one of my faves! Brief synopsis: Danny goes to live with his aunt Martha Kent after his family dies (and for once Danny's family dying in a crossover fic doesn't have anything to do with TUE!), and misunderstandings of the good kind and mishaps ensue because of course Danny and Clark's hero complexes come into play. It's got hurt/comfort, fluff, angst, sibling-esque-bonding, and all sorts of cool stuff, including ghost king headcannons and new powers for Danny. It takes place mostly from a Smallville perspective, but Danny's woven in so seamlessly that you won't believe he wasn't in the original show to begin with. I read it for the first time after having not watched Smallville in years and I could still understand it though, so I think that if you haven't watched Smallville before you could still enjoy the fic a lot!

And like, honestly, I totally recommend other stuff by this author (jadedbluerose) too. She's got a Merlin/DP crossover that's pretty fantastic, but unfortunately she hasn't updated anything since 2014 :( still worth the read though!!

Spirited Away [70k, complete] is a Harry Potter/DP crossover, it's honestly THE MOST hilarious fic I've ever read. Synopsis: Danny is an unwilling student at Hogwarts, and the most chaotic Hufflepuff the world has ever seen. He claims he's been kidnapped but when no one listens to him, he raises all kinds of hell to try and get kicked out. And if that doesn't work, well, he can always sue them. 100% worth the read, it will definitely make you laugh.

Various Superphantom (Supernatural/DP) crossovers by sapphireswimming. Literally anything Superphantom found here? Totally the best. You can also check out Superphantom fics by surelysilly (whose fics are more on the darker end of the spectrum, and their prose style is kinda abstract rather than your traditional linear narrative) Vitaliciouscreations (they've got a oneshot collection that's pretty fun, as well as a oneshot that I wish they'd continue and a complete cute 13k-word penpal fic.)

How to befriend a ghost [80k, incomplete] is a HTTYD/DP crossover in which Danny gets stuck in the Viking era, and I originally started reading this for the Danny & Hiccup friendship because it's adorable and both of them see how similar they are to each other and find kinship in that. The dragon Danny gets (because this is a HTTYD crossover, this is inevitable!) really sneaks into your heart though, and I ABSOLUTELY adore Sparky as much as I adore Toothless. He's very lovable and complements Danny super well! Of course, it's not all friendship bonding and training dragons, the archipelago is Danny's home now (until he can find his way back to Amity Park/his own century) and he's going to protect it too when trouble arises, just like the dragons do. He even gets new powers along the way. This fic is pretty fun, there's a lot of switching perspectives and you really see the characters' voices come through in it, and you even get to see the dragons' POV, which is really interesting since you get to learn Sparky's backstory!

Den Mother [8k, ongoing] is a Young Justice/DP crossover that acknowledges the fact that Danny is by all rights a first-generation hero, and he's treated with the respect as such and gets to join the Justice League rather than the YJ team. Of course, he doesn't WANT to join the league at first, which is a different take than you'd expect, but he reluctantly agrees and is then given the same responsibilities as a Justice League member--that is, to teach the YJ something about teamwork or whatever. It's not very long right now, but the premise is so good! It has a lot of potential.

A Foreign Perspective [200k words, complete] is a DNAngel/DP crossover that I saw @scrollingdown call a fandom classic once and honestly agree, even though I don't think many people know/have read it. It's a cute friendship fic that focuses on Phantom (not Danny, but Phantom specifically) making his first friend, an older boy named Daisuke, who seems normal at first, but is slowly revealed to be a little more understanding of Danny's situation than he appears. Some comfort involved too since Danny deals with a little more with the idea of mourning/loss than in canon, seeing as Daisuke thinks he's a full ghost and therefore a teenager that died, and Danny learns to be a different kind of hero because of it. Really cool fic too since you don't need to know DNAngel at all to understand the fic, since it's told from DP's perspective, and you get to learn about Daisuke as Danny does. It's just super sweet and it's got some action here and there that makes it exciting, and it's really a fun read.

Other stuff by this author is worth the read too! They've got oneshots of a HP crossover and Ghost Whisperer crossover, and a sadly incomplete HTTYD crossover [100k words] that is still super super good and also deals with ideas about mourning and loss. Their non-crossover stuff is also pretty interesting (there's a Mute!Danny AU and Dash kinda-redemption oneshot I really liked).

Diversity [150k, ongoing] is another Ghost Whisperer/DP crossover, it's a found-family fic where Danny runs away from home after his family dies in the events post TUE. He ends up running into Melinda and she goes out of her way to help him. There's a couple underlying mysteries surrounding the ghosts that haunt this fic, and Melinda tries to understand Danny's past and ends up tangled in a conspiracy because Danny's hiding his ghostly alter-ego and also the GIW are involved at some point (and they are much more menacing here than in canon). It's totally a page-turner, and you can get as invested as Melinda in hoping Danny heals from his loss. Spellbound [150k, ongoing] is a HP/DP crossover by the same author! Danny accidentally gets trapped by Magical Britain and is bitter about it, but he's trying to make the best of it. The Wizards have no idea what to make of him, but he just wants to go home, and he makes a couple friends while he plots his escape. (It's actually been a while since I read that one, so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, but I do remember feeling bad for Danny in this fic, poor boy's lonely and can't even interact with kids his own age because he's an unknown creature to the wizards. Good thing Danny's never been one to follow authority.)

A Visit to Paris [10k, complete] is a Miraculous Ladybug/DP crossover in which Danny is Akumatized... sort of. The results are hilarious: Danny's a troll, Hawkmoth is frustrated, the heroes aren't really sure what to make of it, and Danny and Adrien make a lot of puns. Oh, and Danny is the only one smart enough to fix Paris' villain problem (okay, so it might be slightly cracky). It reminds me very much of Spirited Away, which I mentioned earlier. It's got the same level of chaos that's for sure. All in all, it's a very, very fun read.

A Different Sort of House Call [50k, incomplete] is a House MD/DP crossover, it's been years since I read it but I've always considered it one of the fandom classics too? It was definitely one of the first things to pop to mind when I was trying to recall all the cool memorable crossovers to rec you, so this goes on the list too. It's Danny at the hospital with House, and the doctors are trying to diagnose him without knowing about his ghost half (and Danny's not exactly willing to tell them either). There's angst (especially since the author wrote this to follow Lab Rat by AnneriaWings), Vlad trying to be an ally (sorta?), and House being clever as usual. Sadly it's incomplete but it's still super good!!

Running Blind [20k, complete] is a CSI/DP crossover (it took me forever to find the link again since it wasn't listed as a crossover). It's super good, Danny runs away for reasons unknown (at the beginning of course) and gets caught up in a murder investigation and he suspects the culprit is supernatural so obviously he helps out. The CSI guys are both trying to protect him (thinking he was a target for the murderer) but also trying to uncover his past and the reasons he ran away. When you find out why he ran away, you might be awed like I was (especially when you realize how long it had been since he ran) or you might be unimpressed, but the aftermath and his family/friends finally catching up to him might make up for that. I kinda liked how Vlad was written here too.

Ghost Crimes and its sequels is a Criminal Minds/DP crossover. It's the first in a very long series (currently 500k+ words in total) that expands on the DP world and lore, and also involves a lot more murder, death, blood (and the other related gore-ish stuff), and overall realism. Like, Danny fights what is basically Jack the Ripper and its terrifying. It's kind of like a "dark and gritty" DP (but like, not unbearably or overwhelmingly dark and gritty), angst sprinkled here and there, along with darker themes and less light-hearted issues (mental health/trauma/depression/etc. and neglect/abuse and like, actual competent adults like social workers and stuff are a real thing in this fic). There's a lot going on but it's got its lighter nice moments too (Dani is there and gets to be a part of Danny's family, Val's in on the secret, among other things). Also some of the chapters are illustrated, it's great. Definitely check it out!

Winter 2020: Episode 3

I said before on my first Winter 2020 post that I’d give the anime I chose to watch 3 episodes to see whether or not I’d continue watching.

Here are my thoughts on them.

First off, Magia Record.

It’s not like the main Madoka series but I can’t exactly put my finger on why. It just feels different but not in a bad way of course. It’s still interesting due to the mystery but I’ve not connected with any characters yet. By that I mean, other than Iroha, I don’t feel like caring much about the other girls yet. That’d probably change in later episodes the more I know about them but I don’t know how well they can showcase everyone when, according to the OP, there are gonna be a lot of characters for this show unlike the main one with 5 important characters (plus Kyubey).

Still, it’s good although I wish Iroha gets stronger cause right now she hasn’t really done much in terms of fighting. All the better character development in the future though so I’d look forward to it.

Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (2020)

Different from it’s previous adaptation not only in art style but also in how they handled the first few episodes. The art style still kinda uh, confuses me on how to feel? Some characters look good in this (Childman looks way younger here than he did in the first anime. It was the reason I didn’t recognize him at first.) while some looked better in the first series (Orphen looks like a pretty boy in this style but I think he looks more handsome in the old style).

Since the way they handled the story is different, for someone like me who watched this like, more than 10 years ago and remembers little of it except some parts in the beginning and end, this made me feel excited and interested. For one, back in the first anime, the thing about Azalie being the dragon was a spoiler but here it’s showed in the beginning. Her dragon form is called ‘Bloody August’ in the first anime but here, I don’t think I remember her being referred to as that. Anyways, start of adventure soon, I hope? There’s a lot of magic school flashbacks here and while interesting, I’d like to see the main characters get more screentime (Orphen, Claiohm, and Majic).

Bofuri continues to be a fun and exciting series about cute girls playing a VRMMO! Despite being an OP character, watching Maple and Sally fight is still fun and also, the mods are starting to nerf her lol.

Still no overall plot at the moment and I dunno what that would be later on but for now, I’m just enjoying the ride. I’m curious about the blond guy though - the knight who got 1st in the event whose face isn’t shown. What will be his significance, I wonder?

The Case Files of Jeweler Richard is an okay show, I guess? Not the ‘case files’ I was hoping for. They have little detective work done and the show is more like ‘Character of the day needs a jewelry-related thing and has some personal problems and is helped by the 2 main guys whose shop becomes some kind of counseling room’. It’s not bad as I said but its kinda boring at times. While Richard and Seigi are the MCs, the ones with the spotlight is whoever the character of the day is. It’s episodic right now and there maybe a bigger plot later but I’m not sure if I’d still continue following this series. It’s nice if you like jewelry though as they do give info on that so kudos to them as the ‘jeweler’ part is not just something they threw in - the characters actually know stuff about it.

So verdict is: semi-dropped for now. Might come back later if I felt like it but it’s not a priority anymore. I wanted a detective series, dude. Oh and Seigi might be straight and has a thing for that girl he met before but if you guys wanna ship the two MCs, there are some shippy stuff here for you as well :)

Hatena Illusion explains to us why Kana’s family steals: her mom’s family makes magic items and they decided to sell them even thought they’re dangerous. Her mom, Maeve, thinks this is bad and runs off with the guy she likes and also goes everywhere to steal the ‘artifacts’ (magic items) so they would pose no danger. She does replace it with a non-powered replica so the people she steals from won’t miss them. Reminds me somewhat of DNAngel.

That said, Kana is annoying as heck. Typical tsundere who is violent and keeps hurting Makoto even when something is her fault. Makoto is some kind of dormat as well which is annoying. Ema, the maid makes things worse with her stupid comments which doesn’t help and Kokomi, while annoying in the first episodes seems like the only one with common sense and I ended up liking her in episode 3.

I want to drop this show cause Kana pisses me off but hey, Makoto just became a magical (thief) boy and now I need to give it 2 more episodes! It’s rare for there to be a protag magical boy. Most of the time, they’re either supporting or background character but Makoto is a co-protagonist (I know Binan Koukou exist but that’s more of a parody anime).

I’ll be back on whether or not I’ll drop this completely after seeing episode 5.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun is one of the few shows here which has a different ‘style’ in presentation which isn’t bad and actually makes it stand out. The story is also fun with the seven mysteries (and if you watch the OP, everytime a mystery is revealed, they stop being shown as silhouettes in the next episode’s opening) with their respective rumors and backstories. We also have some new characters and some clues about Hanako’s past.

I like this show. It’s cute and has some adventures and a tiny bit of romance (I already ship Hanako with Yashiro) and comedy. The current story with the stairs seem like it’d be fun as a video game haha. I’d definitely be watching this one til the end.

Side note: this and MagiReco feels similar due to the ‘rumors’ and such. I mean, they started dealing with some rumored ‘stairs’ this time. It’s like MagiReco’s seven mysteries is spread in towns instead of just in one school. Just saying the coincidence is interesting.

A Destructive God Sits Next to Me is probably the biggest disappointment to me for this list as I looked forward to this since last year. I needed a replacement for Chuubyou Gekihatsu Boy and this seems perfect but character-wise, it is not.

While it is funny (the first episode had me laughing so hard), there are a lot of scenes that just annoys or frustrates me. The 2nd episode in particular was unbearable and the only thing that kept me going is the thought that I promised to watch 3 episodes. By the end of the episode, all of the frustration I felt just broke when Koyuki had the misunderstanding with the girl and I ended up crying. Yeah, I cried. It sounds stupid and it is which makes it worse. I only ever cry in comedy anime when there’s either a heartwarming or dramatic scene. Here it’s frustration.

I can tolerate Hanadori since Koyuki can and does punch him when he goes too far. It’s Tsukimiya I can’t take. His actions and personality gives me nothing but pure annoyance and hate (except the notebook scene in episode 1 which is really funny). He’s a mean-spirited character and he just makes me uncomfortable. Their homeroom teacher too, is annoying, by the way.

We have a new character this time, though who looks up to Hanado-- er, I mean ‘Miguel’-senpai. He’s annoying but only a little as its his first appearance. I’d give this 1 or 2 more episodes as I want to see who and what kind of person the long-haired guy in the OP is but I don’t think I can take this entire series.

Too bad as the art style is super cute and part of me low-key ships Koyuki with Hanadori (their interactions are cute sometimes esp. when Hanadori drags Koyuki in his fantasy). It also got a banger OP I can’t stop listening to. If I’m able to ignore or at least get used to Tsukimiya, I might watch more. Might. I’m not positive I can take it.
