Marvin Gaye - What's Going On (1971)

Ez az album rögtön egy olyan darab, ami a személyes kedvenceim között is ott van, és egyben jó példa arra is, hogy hogyan ismertem és szerettem meg sok-sok zenét az elektronikus műfajokon keresztül.

2006-ban hallottam egy drum and bass mixet a Utah Jazz nevű arctól, abban volt egy zene, ami nagyon megtetszett, és mint kiderült, a What's Going On-t hangmintázta. Sajnos már a mixet sem találom sehol, maga a zene meg szerintem soha nem is jelent meg, csak valami bootleg verzió lehetett, valószínűleg pont a hangminta nem tiszta felhasználása miatt.

Azelőtt én nem ismertem a What's Going On-t, de ennek a kis hangmintának is olyan vibe-ja volt, hogy mindenképp hallani akartam, hogy mi van körülötte eredeti formájában. Úgyhogy először meghallgattam magát a számot, ami egyből magával ragadott, majd rájöttem, hogy ez a dal az azonos című albumnak a nyitánya, ami tulajdonképpen egy darab 35 perces zenefolyam, és végig tökéletesen hozza a címadó szám hangulatát. Szóval az egy nagyon finom falatból kaptam egy egész étkezésre valót, és azóta is imádom ezt, amikor így jutok el egyik zenétől a másikig. (Valószínűleg lesz még pár ilyen sztorim.)

No és akkor maga az album. Azért szerettem meg nagyon, mert annak ellenére, hogy témájában komoly problémákat feszeget (és hát simán aktuális azóta is kb. az összes), a hangzása egyszerre chill, felemelően szép, és kurva dögös. Utóbbi leginkább a dob + basszus (hoppá!) szekciónak köszönhetően, amit a Motown házi zenekara, a Funk Brothers tolt. Plusz csodálatosan szól, ami számomra meglepő volt egy 1971-es felvételtől. És ez egy ilyen kapudrog volt nekem a soul zenéhez meg ehhez a Motown hangzáshoz, és annak mindenféle reinkarnációjához.

Szintén ehhez az albumhoz köthető élményem, hogy ahogy utánaolvasgattam akkor, megtudtam azt is, hogy az NME már a 80-as években ezt választotta minden idők legjobb albumának, aztán most a Rolling Stone-os listán is felkúszott az első helyre (de ennek semmi jelentősége ugye!), ami szintén meglepett, és elgondolkodtatott azon, amin azóta is agyalgatok időről időre, hogy sokszor mennyire nem tudom felmérni egy album vagy előadó impactjét meg súlyát, főleg ha nem akkor és ott ismerem meg. Mert hát nyilván ez egy jó album, egy népszerű előadótól, de valahogy mégsem ezt képzeltem volna minden idők ennyire széles körben kikiáltott legjobbjának... Hát akkor én hogyhogy nem hallottam még róla?! Az én környezetemben hogyhogy nem dúdolgat csak úgy dalokat róla senki?

És egyszer valahogy szóba jött ez a lemez egy akkori idősebb kollégámmal, akiről meg aztán végképp nem képzeltem volna, hogy egyáltalán ismeri, de kiderült, hogy de, ismeri, szereti, szerinte is a világ legjobbja, sőt, fiatalkorában DJ volt egy vidéki magyar város egyetemi klubjában, és ott rendszeresen játszotta is. Tehát valamikor a 80-as-90-es évek fordulóján valahol Magyarországon ez szólt, erre lassúztak fiatalok, voltak emberek, akik birtokolták, ismerték és szerették ezt a lemezt. Wow, hát akkor ez tényleg valami nagy dolog lehetett! Szóval így, némileg váratlanul, és biztosan nagyon leegyszerűsítve, de Jánoson keresztül tudtam kontextusba helyezni Marvin Gaye-t és a What's Going On-t.

he'd probably get turned into a selkie before then but it's very funny to imagine him having to take care of this baby that's smaller than his thumb. tiny tiny creature. even MORE nervous than in the version of selkie au where he's a cursor because now he's a thousand times the size of this baby

he'd probably keep them in a tupperware box or something for a while until he can get a better set-up like a dollhouse or something. not to mention the absolute nightmare that turning into a selkie would be. how do you get stuff from the store you're so small you can be stepped on!!!!!!!!!!!

it is also funny to imagine him getting booted after he moves to DJ's. pov your weird cursor-stick friend is suddenly in the real world and is freaking the fuck out

not to mention if chosen gets stuck. poor alan has to explain what humans are and address the question that yes, he was that big, and yes, he did somehow get stuck in the computer, no, he doesn't know how or why.

i imagine cursors would be more outernet sized in the real world though, so there's that. easier to handle without crushing them!
