Today is another Class Share Day! Ever wanted to make your own ‘chalkboard’ sign? In our ‘Vintage’ Chalkboards class we use @mmsmilkpaint to create a surface that mimics a chalkboard and can be written on with real chalk! This is a favorite that we wanted to add to our calendar right away last year because it introduces students to a new medium via a fun, quick take-home project. >>We always snazz the class up by pre-making the frames from upcycled art and mirrors frames along with a hard board backing. Day #2 of our grand workshop guide is all about Paint Your Own Piece! This is a cool detailed snap of a chair done in a session just this afternoon that we had with Patty of Austin, TX. So when we schedule this kind of session we focus on teaching a specific technique to customize a small piece of furniture or decor, along with any foundational skills as needed. Not only is #pyop a great ‘101’ class with any of our lines, it can be treated as an open studio or ‘advanced’ class. One of our goals for 2018 is to pull back the curtain and explain more in-depth what we do daily, especially with workshops! So going forward we’ll share a spotlighted session everyday until we share them all! >>> Some of us love our kitchen cabinets as-is, some of us know they could use an upgrade. What if they are sturdy though? Painting cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom can really update while saving on your wallet, especially if the cabinets have no major complaints other than outward look. We normally work with and recommend Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan for cabinetry surfaces due to adherence, ease, and how far it goes compared to price, and use it for our Cabinet Rehab Workshop! After cleaning cabinets well (which we practice in class), other prep is non-existent to minimal depending on the substrate material— this is a major deciding factor on using this paint, besides 1) flexibility for look and technique 2) user-friendliness, and 3) no fumes + water cleanup! Our fave techniques from our Weatherwood Basics Workshop the other day are truly weathered, with glamor and contrast! Both of these are done in Light Oaking reactive stain, for very different looks (one's almost like Ebony wood and the other is like driftwood/ limed or cerused wood). . Left- Oaking over Poplar with Chalk Paint® Black Wax. Right- Oaking over rough pallet wood (pine?) with Chalk Paint® White Wax. We LOVE @weatherwoodstains topcoats, and we also love how waxed finishes look and work over them (did you know these stains are topcoat compatible?).
