Why Do We Let Men Who Have Not Spoken to a Woman Write Female Superheroes?
Representation of women in comics has long been a hotly debated topic, the main issue being the unnecessary sexualisation of women. Writers have a responsibility to provide accurate representation in their stories due to the widespread impact media has on our society. If our only representations of female heroes are not strong, capable women, but scantily clad sex objects for our male main characters, then how are real women going to be perceived? How are these women supposed to be the role models for young girls in the same way that Superman, Spiderman, and other male heroes are role models for young boys?
All female heroes are victims of this sexualisation due to the mostly male creative teams at DC and Marvel. Starfire, one of the most famous female heroes in DC is often a victim of this sexualisation. She is one of the main heroes in the Titans, so she has been used in many comics and TV shows since she was created. When DC did another revamp of their character stories, making the New 52 universe, Starfire was used in the comics Red Hood and the Outlaws written by Scott Lobdell and illustrated by Kenneth Rocafort. The most disappointing thing about Red Hood and the Outlaws is how the dynamic between the Outlaws could have been great if Starfire was not written purely for sex appeal. The positionality of Lobdell becomes an issue when he tries to write Starfire as a sexually liberated woman because he is a man and is writing it from a male perspective. Starfire becomes a man’s fantasy of a sexually liberated women and instead of empowering the character, it becomes degrading (Hudson, 2011). Our first introduction to Starfire is to let the reader know that Jason has had sex with her, Jason letting Roy know that she’s “with us, but yeah she’s been ‘with’ me”. Lobdell then goes on to write Starfire asking Roy to have sex with her after a montage of her in a bikini on the beach. It becomes obvious that Lobdell has not considered how representing female characters correctly is important, but has instead written what he believes is the sexiest version of Starfire. In one fell swoop Starfire’s character has been reduced from a caring, funny, and kind teammate to nothing but a sexy alien with superpowers who can’t tell humans apart and just wants to proposition every man she sees. This comic could’ve been easily improved if Starfire was written with her previous personality and not seen as the love interest.
Starfire’s character is made worse through writers often employing the “born sexy yesterday” trope when writing her. Born sexy yesterday is a trope written by males for males where the female character mimics behaviours and intelligence of a young child despite being physically sexy and appealing (Sampson, 2019). As Starfire is an alien, many comics depict her as unknowing of human customs, leading to ‘funny’ misunderstandings like her swimming fully naked when it is human custom to wear swimsuits. Starfire is often written with childish optimism and naivety which is rather uncomfortable when the other half of her personality is sex appeal. These paedophilic depictions of women in comics has real world implications. Young girls and teenagers have often been targeted sexually by older more mature man and continuing to depict childlike personalities as sexy in our media exacerbates and maintains this problem.
Throughout the entire comic Starfire had little clothing, her New 52 era outfit even more revealing than the one she was created with in the 80s, and despite referring to her as one of the most powerful people on earth, Lobdell treated her character with little respect. Starfire’s costume can and has been made in a way that it not overly sexualised while still being “sexy” and tasteful. Lobdell’s version of Starfire was not tasteful with her outfit containing boots, a thong, and barely any coverage of her chest. When women talk about not wanting female hero costumes to be so revealing, we do not mean that we want these heroes to be incredibly modest. The issue with women’s hero costumes is the double standard when compared to male hero costumes. Most men’s costumes are skintight and fully cover the man up to his neck. Many of them are armoured in order to protect the wearer against the enemies they face. Starfire’s costume leaves readers worried her nipples will fall out.
If Starfire was treated with the same respect Lobdell affords her male teammates, Red Hood and the Outlaws could have been a much better comic. Instead, the comic focuses too much on sex, specifically surrounding Starfire’s character, and it draws readers focus away from the main plot points and completely alienates female readers. DC allowing these harmful portrayals of women to be perpetuated in their comics makes readers wonder if they are that worried about losing their historically male dominated audience. However, by letting this continue, DC will lose the steadily growing audience of female comic fans. Women can clearly see that comics like Red Hood and the Outlaws are not written for them and portray women as thoughtless shells. Comics like these also impact the way that women are seen in real life. If all the media someone consumes shows that a woman’s only goal is to have sex with her male teammates and friends, men are going to be unable to see women as friends.
Lobdell has written Starfire in a way that completely reduces her character and makes it so readers are unable to look up to her as a role model. Like Superman, she is an alien with incredible powers, but unlike him, she has been turned into nothing but eye candy for male readers. Lobdell projects his fantasies around her character onto the comic and because of this cannot write her character in a meaningful way. Starfire’s only relation to the plot is for her male teammates to make sexual comments about her and for her to bust them out of situations where they need alien superpowers. She brings nothing to the team in a way readers can connect to so all she does is reinforce the narrative that women are objects.
But as I am a woman, please disregard this.

y’all headcanoning poseidon as purposefully sending medusa’s head back to sender knowing gabe would open it is like. entirely missing the point of sally jackson’s character and also SO fucked up if it was poseidon?? who used medusa’s head to kill an asshole man?? like!! what the fuck! not to mention sally jackson?? ms. sally jackson? who kills her abusive husband? who on multiple occasions rejected the help of the man who is both a god and her former lover bc she wants to build her life herself—? and who does it? “if my life is to mean anything, i have to live it myself.” those are sally jackson’s words. the abuse itself was already incredibly watered down in the show and that is upsetting. to have gabe accidentally kill himself because he’s a bumbling idiot waters down her agency against her abuse and is even more so upsetting. to have not just a man but a literal god kill her husband for her is so. do you not see how that’s even worse. and then add in that god being poseidon and the method of murder is medusa’s head? i don’t even have words to articulate it, just—
no matter how you cut it, narratively you only disrespect and degrade sally when gabe’s life is taken by any hand that isn’t hers, and having that hand be poseidon’s is just wild.

i mean, i know i present very feminine, and im okay with she/her pronouns, so it doesnt seem like im genderqueer, but i am. and i know that can seem kinda alarming to a lot of people because how are you supposed to know? you don't know, and thats okay with me, im not going to be upset if you get it wrong. but there are people in my life that i've told a thousand times and they still dont get it.
the truth is, it's not hard to respect my gender identity. im fine with pretty much anything, so you cant really get it wrong.
but then youre visibly uncomfortable with how I live my life.
i dont dress feminine enough
i dont shave
i dont plan on getting married and im not sure how i feel about having kids.
you dont judge my brothers about these things. but you judge me.
and i think you should respect any woman or man or genderqueer person for all of the criteria above and more.
but when you judge me, i feel like you don't actually take me seriously when i say im genderqueer. i dont think you get it. i think you just see a girl who is not good enough and you only love me despite these things.
you said it was fine when i said i was genderqueer. i dont think you meant it.

There’s really nothing special about queer characters in media, so why shouldn't there be more of them?
Queer representation in animation has been a topic of debate in relatively recent years, as the uprising of the (predominantly) younger generations fighting for the rights of minorities has become somewhat of a trend. While this is completely needed for any major changes to happen in the media world, since catering to trends is how big media companies profit in the short term; being a minority isn’t a trend. It is a struggle, and yet it is a way of life. Being a minority does not make you any less of a person, but also doesn’t mean you’re any more of a person, and therefore doesn't mean you need any sort of special attention in the media so why are people so mad about it in the first place? While representation is what we have been asking for, the answer isn’t to drop random queer characters with no plot into existing stories, and it isn’t to just add in that an already existing character is all of a sudden gay. What we have been asking for, is representation, not a spectacle. Not something for people to pity, or to marvel at. Just show people being people, and that is it.
A lot of people forget that representation in the media isn’t just putting a minority on a pedestal and going, “Hey! Look at this! We made this for you [insert minority here]!” But instead is the normalization of these minorities in the environments they are in. An example of terrible representation in animated media specifically, is the queer relationship between Korra and Asaami in ‘Avatar: The Legend Of Korra’. Neither of these characters are even hinted at being somewhat queer until the very last episodes, and even then calling it representation is a stretch. This is what some might call queerbaiting, which is loosely defined as baiting the queer community into thinking there will be representation in a show, and then not following through with those promises, or following through just enough to be worthy of a spot in the “Top 10 queer romances in animated history”. The moral gymnastics the people who make the decisions at these studios must have to do, to think that all people want for their representation is some vague hand holding in the last scene of a show, or in the case of the show Voltron, some flashbacks of a past relationship of a pretty prominent character and then outing him as homosexual. This example would have been fine, however, it was done in the second to last season of the show, indicating to viewers and people of the queer community in this fandom that this relationship, and this plot point was an afterthought to bait the already very queer fandom of the show into thinking that they would get at least a little bit of representation. To top it all off, the love interest for this surprise gay character was killed off in the first non-flashback scene that he starred in, so how’s that for enthusiasm.
Queerbaiting isn’t all that goes on however, while a lot of queer representation is iffy at best, there’s still some crumbs here and there that show genuine thought of characters and their stories, as opposed to just saying that they’re queer and then not building on their character from there at all. One of these examples is the show Yuri on Ice. It is essentially a one season show about a former ice skater, who finds himself with no purpose after losing a tournament, and then being offered to be coached by his all time favorite ice skating idol. The show focuses on ice skating mainly, with a compelling plot, interesting side characters, and meaningful backstories, it’s essentially just like any other sports anime, with little bits of focus on the romance between these two male leads. It’s one of the best representations of queer relationships I’ve seen in animated media as it truly shows that queer people are just people. They have lives, and they have stories to be told, they can have opportunities and competition, just like every other non-queer character in media.
Companies shouldn’t be creating queer characters for the sole purpose of gaining views, traction or being seen as woke or progressive in any way. If they want that oh-so sought after representation, they should be creating meaningful characters, with meaningful backstories, and interesting characteristics. Being queer isn’t a personality trait, or a buzz word for attention, it is just a way of life, and as much as big media companies might disagree, queer people aren’t spectacles, they are simply people. There’s really nothing special about queer characters in media, so why shouldn't there be more of them?
But as I am a woman, please disregard this.

“As a biologist, the terms biological woman and man don’t make any sense to me” okay then you’re an idiot and a terrible biologist. I swear to god, morons like you only become biologists just so you can hold it over others, when in reality, if biology deniers like you can become biologists, then being one really doesn’t mean much anyway. But this probably just gave an autogynophile like you a boner to read, anyway.
Oh fun! Haven't gotten one of these in a while. Disregarding the fact that you somehow think the qualification for being a biologist entirely hinges on defining womanhood, I do need to ask some clarification. I know I'm feeding the trolls here, but here we go: does your definition of "biological woman" mean:
Sociological woman? Eh, context dependent, I'm not fully out of the closet, but oftentimes, I am and present femme. So let's call that one 50/50.
Psychological woman? Because I am one.
Neurological woman? Because I am one [1].
Physical woman? My soft tissue redistribution is handling that well.
Hormonal woman? My blood tests are within cis female ranges.
Transcriptional woman? As a signalling molecule, the downstream effects of estrogen have broad transcriptional effects, completely changing the profile of gene expression and functional genomics of my cells. [2]
Genetic woman? I mean, see my above point- as far as my genes that are actually active, I have all of the same transcripts being produced, controlling which genes are expressed.
Karyotypic woman? I actually have a few signs pre-HRT that might point to a non-XY chromosome pair, but I haven't had a karyotype. We'll put that down as unknown. And hell, even if its XY, there's plenty of cis women who are karyotypically XY, with suppressed sry or complete androgen insensitivity. Interestingly enough, a completely androgen insesitive woman can go her whole life without knowing- and functionally, is very similar to a trans woman, actually. Fancy that. [3]
Reproductive woman? I can't produce an egg cell, but neither can significant fractions of cis women. Also, this is all gonna change soon, which is fun. [4]
There's also a lot of understudied aspects to the biology of HRT and even pre-HRT that are emerging, largely demonstrating widespread cellular and genetic remodeling of trans individuals undergoing hormone therapy. The field is a bit behind due to constant political pressure to revoke funding, but a lot of the results are extremely exciting in both testosterone and estrogen hormone therapies. I'm sure that, as a self professed biology As someone who presumably has a lot of expertise in biology, I'm assuming that you're aware of all of this cutting edge research, and are keeping up with modern papers, including but not limited to these cool findings:
Trans men on HRT exhibit significant genetic and transcriptional changes that make them biochemically male. [5][6]. It's a good hypothesis that the same happens with estrogen treatment, but those studies don't exist yet- I'm sure you're reserving judgment until more publications exist, of course.
Trans men on HRT develop male cell types and tissues. [7]
Trans women experience muscular and blood cell changes that align with cis women moreso than cis men [8]
And many, many more! This is an exciting, underserved, and groundbreaking field of research, and I'm sure you're keeping up with the latest in scientific journals about it.
I'm sure, of course, that you understand that it becomes impossible to draw a distinct line anywhere in here, and that words like "woman" are shorthand for the myriad of traits that invisibly synthesize in our mind and in society to represent a concept? I'm sure you understand that science is fundamentally descriptive, not prescriptive? I'm sure that you understand that these findings, while really cool and interesting, actually don't mean jack shit about what the word "woman" means or not?
As someone who is the ultimate decider in what a biologist is, I'm sure you know that bioessentiallism is a childish mindset that completely ignores and disregards the constantly changing, dynamic nature of biological systems, something that extends well beyond biological sex and its relation to gender.
I'm sure that also, that you understand that beyond just this, that the role of science in society is to advise how to achieve our moral principles, not create moral principles in themselves. And I'm sure that understanding means you know that trans affirming healthcare and supportive societal treatment leads to reduced mortality and increased happiness for everyone, right?
So great to talk to someone who is surely a scientist on this. You are a biologist, if you're talking like this, I assume? I assume you're not going to spit complete misreadings of scientific language from the background sections of these papers that only reveal you've never read a scientific paper in your life if you're thinking this way? I assume you have experience interpreting data like this?
Also, imagining my genitalia while writing this? Ew. Please stop projecting your fetishes into my inbox.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You lured many crews to their deaths, men followed your alluring voice into the thrashing waves of the ocean. Willingly drowning themselves in the salt.
Once they heard your song, and saw your beautiful face their fate was already sealed. You were cunning and dangerous, not hesitating to go after any ship you saw.
This didn't change when you saw a wrecked ship on the shore of an island. The pirates were obviously disoriented, and fixing their ship to leave.
One tall, strong figure commanded them, voice booming and most definitely angry. When they walked off, you took this as your chance to strike, rising onto the shore, and from between your lips came a song.
The pirates in your vicinity turned their heads to admire you in awe, at that you smirked, beckoning them closer with a finger adorned in jewels.
Unexpectedly, a woman came out from behind the trees, you assumed she was the loud voice you heard earlier. Shit.
A woman being the captain of this crew was the last thing you expected.
She didn't hesitate to pull her gun from the holster and aim it in your direction. The bullet barely missed your side as you jumped away. The sharp sound made you stop your song immediately.
The men, previously in a trance, looked around. Their eyes eventually settled on you. You pushed away from the shore, but before you could swim, heavy hands grabbed you from under the arms.
The woman had managed to seize you in all your shock, and you thrashed and flailed in her strong hold. She pulled you from the water, metal arm clawing into your flesh, most definitely leaving red marks.
You could feel her warm chest against your back. It contrasted the cold that you usually felt on mens bodies when you pulled them overboard into the icy waves.
She held you up for the men to see, "We caught us a pretty one, aye?" A short, stout man spoke.
"She would sell for a lot, y'know."
"Nah, I think I wanna keep her. She's rather stunning."
"Are you serious she tried—"
"Enough."
The womans stern voice was loud enough to quiet the whole crew. You could feel the vibration of her chest when she spoke. It was a deep and gutteral hum.
"I want to be off this island by nightfall."
All the men scurried at her order, returning to their original positions. They spoke amongst themselves and murmured their complaints, now completely disregarding your presence.
She threw you into the sand, and you landed with a thump. You didn't skip a beat before you tried to claw your way back to shore, but were stopped short by her hand grabbing your tail.
"Now, what am I going to do with you." Her voice was surprisingly husky.
You let out a yelp and turned around to face her, holding yourself up on your elbows. You were now met with her smokey grey eyes and dark scarred skin that anyone would recognize.
Sevika.
She was a ruthless leader and led an even more unforgiving crew. Her reign was seemingly endless, ruling the seas for the better half of her life. Men and women that sailed the seas all respected her alike.
You parted your lips to start a song. But before you could even let out one note, she interrupted you, "That shit isn't going to work on me."
You knew that.
It was worth a try though.
She crouched over you, one knee digging into the sand beside you, and her other leg thrown over you, boot awfully close to your tail.
She reached out to your face with a warm hand, but you pulled back, baring your teeth to her in a snarl. Then she palmed your jaw more ferociously, smirking at your actions. She tilted your head from one side to another, eyes following the trail of scales down your neck.
Her lips were parted ever-so-slightly, and you could see the small gap between her teeth, showcased by her thick brown lips.
You had never been interested in humans, especially human men. Their sexual desire outruled any curiousity you had towards them. Men completely ruined the human race for you. In fact, they disgusted you. But you had never been this close to a human woman.
Usually, you targeted pirate ships, so coming across a woman was especially rare. At one point, you started to wonder if they even existed. But your doubts were disproven as the woman on top of you caused your breath to hitch in your throat.
"What are you going to do to me." You hissed.
"Oh, so she does speak," Sevika smirked before getting up and brushing sand off her pant leg, "I could chop you up and serve you to my men.. But that would be a waste. Plus, im not a fan of killing the local wildlife."
She was clearly amused by her joke, but you werent, you glared daggers at her, now crossing her arms as she towered above you. It was a clear display of her power and authority.
" 'M gonna have to keep you in my sight until we leave." She said, more in a teasing way than strict.
"I need water." You shot back at her, slightly grateful that she wasn't going to kill you, but the sun might just kill you itself if you didn't get back to the sea.
"Alright. I'll let you go to the shore. But if you even seem like you're going to swim away, I won't hesitate to shoot," She pulled her gun out of its holster again, flashing it to you as a warning.
At that, you turned to start clawing your way back to the rocks where you orignally resided. But you felt a large arm scoop you up instead. You were basically folded over Sevikas forearm, her hip balancing some of your weight as she walked you to your destination. You couldn't do anything but let your arms dangle over your head, fingertips brushing the ground. (maybe not if your short)
How embarassing.
When she plopped you into the water, you sighed deeply, feeling your gills thank the salt in the sea. The crew was now hidden from your view as the rocks were big enough to fill your vision. Sevika, on the other hand, was sitting atop one, eyeing her men.
You could take this perfect opportunity to swim away, but a part of you knew that she wasn't looking away because she trusted you to stay. She was looking away because she trusted herself to be able to shoot faster than your tail could hit the water.
So you opted to keep your place. You saw her shake her head at what you assumed to be the antics of the crew. Reaching into her pocket, she grabbed a zippo and lit a cigarillo that was now between her fingers.
You rolled your eyes at her, gills retracting when she blew out hot smoke in your direction. You rested your chin on your arms, laying against a smaller rock.
"What? Not a fan of tobacco?" She mused.
"I am not a fan of any human trinkets." Your lip curled in disgust at the smell.
She eyed the sparkly jewerly that hung from your limbs, "Doesn't seem that way to me."
You got defensive, "Enough. I found it myself."
That wasn't a lie. You kept a lot of the treasures you found in mens pockets, jewerly, watches, and compasses.
You didn't exactly fancy small talk, but Sevika insisted that they would be there for several more hours until her ship was fixed. So you would tell her some stories and let her look at your treasures.
The sun started to set on the horizon, and eventually, you were sitting on the rock next to her, her large hand tracing your scales with intrigue. You didn't feel disgusted by her touch or bored with her presence. This feeling was forgin to you, and you wanted to let your guard down.
But you also wanted to wrap your cold fingers around her throat and strangle her until her warm breath left her body. Leaving her there to swim back into the ocean.
You disregarded that and leaned into her touch, watching the sunset. Some kind of ease has settled itself into your bones, knowing that you couldn't control her with song or seduce her with melody.
And maybe you were finding yourself too much in thought, but you might have her wrapped around your finger without help from the sea. And maybe she was allured by your fantastical stories and airy laugh.
Suddenly, your train of thought was interrupted by a scraggly voice, "Aye, cuddling up to the captian?"
You jumped into the water, away from Sevikas side. She grabbed the handle of her gun with wide eyes before stopping when she saw you, unmoving and clinging to a rock.
She wasn't lying when she said she would shoot you at any attempt to flee. But a pang shot through your chest anyway.
She cleared her throat and spoke, "What could you possibly want."
He tilted his head to the now finished ship. "Told ya we could do it, cap."
She sighed, standing up from the rock and sparing you one last glance before walking back to her ship.
I guess this was your queue to leave, but after the day you spent with her, a part of you couldn't leave. She had piqued a feeling that nobody ever had before.
So you watched her speak to her crew from a distance, bobbing in the dark waters. Your lips were curled down in a pouty frown.
She let everyone board before her, patting a heavy hand on the last man's back. Just before she stepped onto the ramp, she caught your gaze. Her eyes widened, and you dipped back under the water, out of sight.
She sighed and started to ascend the ramp to the deck, but not before hearing a splash from beside her. It was you, your fingers grasped at the wood, head balancing just above the ramp. Your torso was completely out of the water, and it dripped from your skin.
Her heart lurched at the sight, and she reached towards you, bending down into the water. You lowered yourself back into the sea as she closed the distance between you now. Her hat barely balanced itself on her head when she stroked a thick finger down your cheek.
You held her hand against your face and closed the gap between your lips completely. Sevikas lips were thick and warm and tasted roughtly of tobacco.
She was so unlike you, but you yearned for her deeply. Her form was rugged and large compared to your swift elegance and shiney scales. But when she pulled away and you looked into her eyes, you didn't seem to care whether she had legs or a tail.
Only that she was yours.
"I'll follow you wherever you go."
