REQUEST: Could you write a chris evans x reader where the reader has a really bad relationship with her family and never talks to them so she doesnt understand the closeness between chris and his mom and shes just kinda weirded out (angst and then fluff) from @rororo06
Hope you enjoy <3
Warning: bad family relationship, language (but not really lol), bad writing
Word Count: 1.9k (I got carried away with this)
Feedback is appreciated!
Tumblr media
Chris didn’t have to be a genius to know that you were nervous. From the way your thumbs fiddled against one another to the way your leg anxiously bounced as you sat in the passenger seat. It was obvious.
You alright?” He asked, glancing over to you as he drove. You let out a hum in response. He chuckled, reaching over and taking your closest hand in his, raising it to his lips. He pressed a soft kiss on the back of your hand, a small smile on his face. “It’s okay, (Y/N). It’s just my family.”
“Just your family?” You asked, raising your eyebrows. “Chris, I think your grip on reality is a little loose.”
“Don’t be scared to meet them,” Chris shook his head, the grin on his face got wider. “They’ll love you.”
“And if they don’t?”
“Guess you’re walking home, then.” You scoffed at his response, pulling your hand from his. “I’m kidding!”
“I’m not.”
“They’ll love you,” he reassured as he took your hand back.
You frowned, losing yourself in your own head. You thought back to your family. You’ve been estranged for so long. You don’t even remember the last time you spoke to your parents. The last interaction you had with a blood relative was a small “happy birthday” comment on your sibling’s Instagram post a year ago. They didn’t even bother to respond.
Your upbringing wasn’t like how it was in the movies. Your parents weren’t the kindest people. You were pushed to be the best, so that they could flaunt your successes as their own. However, that didn’t save you from the mishaps.
If you were one point off from a perfect score, you were sent to your room without dinner. If you defended yourself, you were whooped and called disrespectful. If you spoke in a way that they didn’t appreciate, you were locked outside the house.
You spent years trying to make yourself their perfect child, but they always found a flaw.
They wanted you to become a doctor. They talked highly of you when you received your acceptance letter to Stanford University. They were willing to pay the expensive tuition just so they can brag about you to their snobby friends.
However, you got accepted to your dream school for your passion. It was what you wanted to do. You were even gifted scholarship though it didn’t cover all the expenses.
Ultimately, you decided to do something for yourself for once - to make yourself happy. But that meant your parents cut you off completely.
You were so lost in your own thoughts that you didn’t even hear Chris say, “after this, I should meet your family.” You nearly choked.
“Um, I’ll have to see when my parents are free,” you muttered as you watched him pull into the family home.
“Just let me know. I’ll clear my schedule,” Chris smiled as he withdrew the key from the door. He quickly jogged over to your side of the car to open your door. You quietly thanked him as you both walked towards the front door.
Without even pressing the doorbell, the door swung open to reveal his mother. She had a big smile on her face as she engulfed her son in a hug.
“It’s been too long!” She said letting him go. His mom put her hands on his cheeks, giving them a squeeze. “Sweetheart, I forget that you’re so handsome!”
“Mom!” Chris blushed as he playfully swatted her hands away. When he finally got her to get off of him, a hand found its way around your waist. He pulled you towards his mom with a smile. “Ma, this is (Y/N), my girlfriend.”
“Hello, (Y/N)!” His mom beamed, immediately wrapping her arms around you, pulling you into a hug much like the one she just gave her son.
You let out an awkward laugh as you patted her back. “Oh, sweetheart, you’re even more gorgeous in person!” She complimented. You blushed, muttering a thank you. “Come inside! C’mon, don’t be shy.”
You let out a shaky breath as she slung her arm over your shoulder, bringing you into the house with Chris at tow. You felt your body tense up at the touch and it didn’t go unnoticed by your boyfriend who walked behind you.  She showed you both into the living room where children played while women, Chris’s sisters you assumed, were talking on the sofas.
“You have a beautiful home, Mrs. Evans,” you forced a smile though the compliment was genuine.
“Mrs. Evans... please, call me Lisa.” Mrs. Evans - Lisa shook her head as she finally let you go. “Shanna, Carly, this is (Y/N), Chris’s girlfriend.” The two sisters smiled and greeted you as Lisa exited to the kitchen.
Chris’s hands snaked around your waist again. He leaned into your ear and whispered, “hey, you okay?” You nodded. He didn’t believe you but didn’t want to push you past your comfort zone. So instead, he switched the topic. “Scott, here?”
Shanna was the one who answered. “You know him, he likes to make an entrance.” Carly and Chris laughed. Chris released you and led the both of you to sit on the sofas. The three siblings immediately began to converse.
Laughter filled the living room as jokes were thrown around. The children were very sweet, running up to Chris and you asking to be held by your boyfriend.
After around 20 minutes or so, the front door swung open to reveal another man. “The favorite has arrived!” He shouted with his arms open as the children screamed in delight, running over to their other uncle.
“More like the least favorite one has arrived late,” Chris jokingly said, pouting as the little one in his lap jumped off to join his cousins and uncle.
“Heard that!” Scott called out.
“You were supposed to!” Chris quipped in response. The Evans siblings all began to laugh at the exchange.
Chris’s family was so close with one another. Their interactions were foreign to you.
A room full of laughter would’ve been a room full of tension if it were your family. The sarcastic but playful jabs at each other would’ve resulted in consequences that normally came with a belt. A normal (L/N) get together would’ve been a competition as to who had the best life - who was the most successful child. The hugging, the compliments, even the smiles that the Evans threw your way made you uneasy.
“Excuse me,” you muttered to Chris, squeezing his bicep before finding your way into an empty hallway. You took deep breathes as you tried to calm yourself, leaning against the wall.
In a way, you were hurt. This is what a family was really like. It wasn’t the need to be the best. It wasn’t being in a constant state of fear. It wasn’t suffocating in the tension at the dining table. It was happy.
“Hey, you okay?” You heard Chris ask as he walked up to you. You looked up at him with watery eyes, shaking your head. He engulfed you in a big hug, rubbing your back in an attempt to comfort you. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s stupid,” you rolled your eyes at yourself as you put your head on his shoulder.
“If it’s bothering you, then it’s not stupid. Was it my mom? When she hugged you? I’m sorry... She’s just a very friendly person.” He rambled but you shook your head, pulling away from him. “Then what is it?”
“Your family is perfect,” you sighed.
“We’re nowhere near perfect,” Chris scoffed. “But we’re happy.”
“Exactly,” you said. “You guys are happy. You all live near each other because you want to live near each other. You all crack jokes and laugh... and you hug each other?” You chuckled at yourself, realizing how stupid you sounded.
“That’s just a family, babe.”
“My family isn’t like that,” you admitted. “Everyone’s vicious. They’ll find something you aren’t good at even if you make sure you’re the best at everything. They’ll pick at your insecurities just because they can. I don’t think I’ve ever heard my mom laugh or had my siblings in the same room before an argument erupted.” You gestured towards the living room as loud laughter followed after a joke Scott made. “My family doesn’t do that.”
You told him about your childhood. You explained your punishments when you did something your parents deemed was “wrong”. You told him about when you finally stood up for yourself, you were cut off completely. You struggled to pay your student debt, but you managed it because you wanted to prove your parents wrong.
You unloaded your familial baggage on your boyfriend and he listened. He always listened and gave you his undivided attention, a trait the members of your family didn’t have.
Chris exhaled through his nostrils, his brows furrowed, as he realized the reason why you didn’t talk about your siblings as much as he did. He recalled all the moments were you dodged questions about your parents. He even remembered a time when a friend of his complimented you about your success in your career and you were started by it.
“Then screw them.” Chris responded after your rant. You frowned at him. “If they don’t want to be in your life, then screw them. You’re right. That’s not a family... But baby,” he smiled, pulling you into him, “what’s mine is yours. My family most definitely can be yours, too. I love you.”
You gave him a soft smile, standing on your tip toes to peck him on the lips. “I love you, too.”
“Now, c’mon, and spend some time with our family.” You smiled at his words, taking his hand as he lead you back into the living room.
You quickly adjusted as you pushed your tainted family memories to the back of your head, allowing yourself to make new ones with Chris’s family. You got along well with his siblings and soon joined in on the Chris teasing. You even played with his nephews and nieces, who were convinced you were a Disney princess.
His mother showed you Chris’s baby photos and the two of you gushed over how adorable he was. “What happened?” you joked with your boyfriend. He only responded by sticking his tongue out at you like a child. Even his dad was fond of you by the end of the visit.
-=+=-
You smiled at the memories you made as you finished up getting ready for bed. Chris was sitting at the foot of your shared bed and you walked over to him, taking a seat. You gave your boyfriend a kiss and a tight hug. “Thank you for today,” you smiled.
“I told you they’d love you,” Chris laughed with his arms around you tightly. “Not as much as I love you, though.”
“Dork,” you laughed, lightly smacking his chest before you got into bed.
“I’m gonna go put water in Dodger’s bowl. You need anything?” Chris asked. You shook your head as you fluffed your pillow.
Chris closed the bedroom door, running over to his coat that he hung over his desk chair. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw the black velvet box was still tucked in the pocket.
“She’s the one?” His mom asked him as you were saying your goodbyes to his nieces, who were sad that the ‘Disney princess’ was leaving.
A big, goofy smile found its way onto Chris’s face as he nodded. “Oh, yeah, most definitely.”
“Where’s the ring?” His dad asked. Chris fumbled in pocket for the box before showing it to his parents discreetly. “Excellent choice.”
“I know it might seem early,” Chris began. “We’ve been together for a year and a couple months now, but ... I just know.”
“Then go for it,” his mom encouraged. “She’ll be a great addition to the family.”
Chris beamed as he slid the box back into his pocket. “I know.”

And the Haters are at it again...
Trying to convince everyone within earshot that BC is about to be replaced as Doctor Strange.
Gator posted an "anon" comment about actors being replaced by Disney/Marvel. They ended the post with...
Tumblr media
"
And of course Gator posting this is to shore up the Hater narrative that BC's marriage is ruining his career! But looking closely at the examples given in the post and it's easy to see just how stupid and flimsy this whole "he can be replaced if he doesn't stop "The Sham" narrative is.
I'm not going to post the actual anon screed (it's VERY poorly written) but I will go over the actors cited by this "anon" as ones dumped by Disney/Marvel and you can decide if their problems are comparable to Ben's situation.
First we have Letitia Wright. The anon introduced the post with a article from "D-listed" gossiping about the possibility of LW being replaced Michaela Coel in the Black Panther sequel. Not that she HAS replaced LW but that they think she might. Reasons... well for one thing LW apparently went on an anti-vax, anti-science rant on Twitter and then deleted said offensive material but not before it was seen by a LOT of people. To quote from the speculative piece -
"As you may recall, last December Leticia squandered much of the goodwill she earned playing the smartest scientist in all of the MCU when she shared a bat-shit video from self-proclaimed profit Tomi Arayomi in which he “questions the legitimacy of the COVID-19 vaccination, appears sceptical of climate change, accuses China of spreading COVID-19, and makes transphobic comments.” After sparring a bit on Twitter with folks who thought it wasn’t so cool for the person playing the smartest scientist in all of the MCU to be spreading antiscience religious doctrine, Letitia completely deleted all her social media. While Variety says that Letitia is among the original BP cast members who “will likely reprise their roles,” TMZ is not so sure."
So, she posted a religious cult-like rant from a transphobic, anti-science, anti-vax, racist, climate change denier and got enough blowback that she pulled out of her social media account and even with ALL THAT it's only rumoured that she will be replaced! Does BC's actions in the last 7+ years sound anywhere close to this type of behaviour?
Next we have other examples the anon listed to support the argument that BC is on thin ice when it comes to his career with Disney.
1) "They replaced that chic on the Madalorian". Anon means Gina Carano who was fired by Lucasfilm because of her outrageous behaviour on her social media account.
To quote from a Collider article -
"The former MMA fighter has been stirring up controversy on social media for quite some time now, including but not limited to transphobic tweets, mocking the wearing of masks during the COVID-19 pandemic, and spreading misinformation about voter fraud. Fans of The Mandalorian have routinely been calling for her to be fired, and Lucasfilm finally made the decision Wednesday evening — although THR reports that the studio has been “looking for a reason to fire her for two months.”
So, she had been displaying behaviour that went completely against the philosophy of the company and doing it for some time. As a spokesperson said "her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."
Is this person's behaviour comparable to how BC has comported himself?
2) "they replaced Terrance Howard in Iron Man 2 with Don Cheadle." And then this "anon" goes on theorize that it had to do with salaries . But when you look at this Terrance fellow, what pops up? Well, according to Wikipedia...
"February 2009, it was reported on The Smoking Gun that Howard was arrested in 2001 for a variety of charges related to a violent attack on his estranged first wife, including simple assault, terrorist threats, harassment and stalking. According to police reports, he arrived at her house after an argument on the phone, forced entry into her home by breaking in doors, and chased her into the backyard where he punched her twice in the face with a closed fist. The violent attack ended when Howard's brother stepped in. In 2002, he pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace"
it goes on to say "In a September 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Howard admitted to hitting his first wife in 2001 saying, "she was talking to me real strong, and I lost my mind and slapped her in front of the kids."
All this was coming out just before his salary was chopped by Marvel to a minuscule amount and he was replaced when he left Iron Man 2.
So again, how's BC's public reputation stack up to a person convicted of attacking a woman?
Not even close I would wager!
BC has a near sparkling reputation when compared to the likes of these replaced actors! Sure he's had some minor bumps (he isn't perfect) but he's NEVER publicly embarrassed the company making his movies! He's NEVER been convicted of beating on a woman!
He is a kind, generous, non-scandalous celebrity who works hard, stays out of social media scraps and is constantly praised by all who have worked with him. He's a committed father and husband and holds the values that many forward thinking, intelligent people do.
Other than the Haters (and occasionally their gossip mouthpiece "Enty") there's RARELY been even a whisper about him in the gossip rags ESPECIALLY since his marriage to Sophie! Why? BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING TO TALK ABOUT! NO SCANDAL! HAPPILY MARRIED FAMILY MAN!
End of story!
So why would Marvel be looking to dump him? ANSWER: THEY WOULDN'T!

To Be Cared For- A Sanders Sides Oneshot
Couch here! Just finished this story! You can find the full thing here or continue to read it below!
Summary: After the introduction to Remus, Roman goes back into the mindscape to find that the injury his brother bestowed upon him is worse than he thought, but he doesn't want the others to know. Too bad nothing gets past Logan.
Warnings: Light Blood, Mentions of a Wound, Whump, Mentions of “Ducking Out”
There is some implied Logince, and we have a whump Roman! Enjoy!
When Roman sunk up from Thomas’ living room into the common room of the mindscape, he gave a tired sigh. What a day. The confusion, the fear, Thomas being introduced to his brother. Something that Roman had hoped would never happen, the fear that Thomas would see the worst version of him. Remus, his brother, a long lost friend and confidante, now twisted in ways that Roman couldn’t understand. He was the one who left them for the Dark Sides, it was his fault! But there was a part of Roman that knew that that wasn’t true. Roman could have been more present in his brother’s life. He could have done better. But his pride stood in his way. A part of Roman hurt just thinking about it, so he usually just chose to not think. But it hurt. It really hurt. Actually, his head was killing him, why-
Oh. That’s right. Remus hit him with his morning star. God, how hard did he hit him? Roman raised his hand to the back of his head, lightly examining the wound, hissing in pain and pulling his hand back when he felt a wave of pain roll through his skull. He looked at his hand, seeing that it was now covered in blood. Damn, Remus really hurt him. He frowned when he heard Patton, Logan, and Virgil all sink up in the common room, clearly also shaken from the event of the day. Remus was a lot to handle. Logan looked at the Prince curiously as Patton turned to him, a worn out smile on his face.
“Everything okay, kiddo?” Patton asked.
Roman shoved his hand behind his back, hoping no one noticed.
“Yeah, yep. Everything’s A-okay padre!” Roman shot Patton a finger gun and gave a bright smile, praying that Logan wouldn’t notice that the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“That’s pretty lighthearted for someone who ran into their long estranged twin today,” Virgil quipped, his hands folded in the pocket of his hoodie. He looked at Roman questioningly. Logan was staring a hole through his head. Roman knew he had to get out of there quickly before they caught on.
“Yeah, well, today has been a bit exhausting, I’m gonna go to bed.” Roman quickly sputtered, backing towards the exit. Logan narrowed his eyes.
“Stop.” Logan commanded, the Prince stopping dead in his tracks. He began to sweat. Dammit, he wasn’t fast enough.
“He’s injured.” Logan stated matter-of-factly. Patton gasped.
“Are you hurt, kiddo?” Patton asked, his face creased with worry.
“N-no…” Roman stammered, looking away from them.
“Then show me your hand.” Logan demanded, stepping closer towards Roman. Roman took a step back and shoved his hand further out of their view. Virgil’s eyes widened at the realization.
“You ARE hurt!” the anxious side exclaimed, a look of horror across his face. “Remus really hurt you today.”
“Oh please, it’s merely a scratch, Doctor Gloom. I have had worse!” Roman argued. Patton and Logan were getting closer to him. Patton’s face was washed in worry.
“Kiddo, we can help you.” he spoke softly.
Roman turned away from him, looking at the floor.
“I’ll be fine, I always am.”
“Not if you don’t get proper medical attention,” Logan interrupted, his mouth pressed in a firm line but his eyes unusually soft. “Let us help you.”
Roman sighed and slowly revealed his hand, bloodied from the cut on his head. Patton gave a small gasp. Virgil didn’t take his eyes off of the hand, horrified. Roman allowed Logan to come behind him and inspect his wound. He felt Logan tense behind him. After a long while, Logan let out a sigh.
“It will need stitches,” he declared. “Virgil, please go to my room and get the first aid kit. Patton, please help Roman to the couch so that I can dress his wounds.”
In an instant, the sides spurred to action, Virgil disappearing from the room and Patton at Roman’s side, putting his arm around him and leading him to the couch, letting Roman lay his head on his lap. Virgil returned, kit in hand. He sat on the couch next to them, his face pale with concern. The two shared a look as Patton looked up at Logan, tears in his eyes. Logan shook his head, as if answering some unspoken question.
“He’ll be alright, Patton, I promise. I will take good care of him.” Logan assured, gently touching the back of Roman’s head, studying the cut. Patton nodded quietly. Upon hearing these words, something in Roman’s chest swelled up. To be cared for, it felt nice. He typically just bandaged his own wounds from the imagination, sitting in his room, cleaning his cuts. But this, this felt nice. Roman knew that his friends liked him enough. Patton was always affectionate towards him, but that was Patton. He and Virgil warmed up to each other, they protected one another. And Logan, well he tolerated him, he guessed. Logan was never really present, always shut up in his room reading. Roman often found himself wondering if Logan was being nice to him because he had to, not because he wanted to. But to see him analyzing his wound so gently, it stirred something in Roman. He began to feel hot tears prick at his eyes. Try as he might to push them down, Roman failed. The tears came, rolling down his cheeks silently. He began to shake, gasping for air. Logan yanked his hand back as if he had touched a hot stove. His eyes were wide.
“Did I hurt you?” he inquired. Roman shook his head, burying his face in Patton’s lap.
“No,” he cried, his voice muffled, “That’s not it. I can handle pain. It’s just-” He began to sob again.
“Oh, kiddo,” Patton murmured, “Is it because you saw your brother?” Roman shook his head once more.
“N-no…” he stammered, “It-it’s that y-you care.” Patton rubbed his shoulder.
“Of course we care about you kiddo!” Patton smiled, “We always have!” Virgil nodded in agreement.
“But-but why?” Roman stammered, “I-I’m not worth caring about.” The sides raised their eyebrows at that.
“Yes you are!” Patton began, “You’re confident, you’re handsome, you’re so creative-”
“That’s all a ruse!” Roman whimpered. “I’m not confident and I’m not good enough to be Thomas’ creativity. I don’t know why you all even bother putting time into me.”
“Who told you that?” Virgil demanded. He looked angry. “If Deceit even so much mentioned that to you-”
“No!” Roman interrupted, “This is all my conclusion. I’ve always been a problem. Maybe Remus had the right idea, maybe Thomas should ‘hold the Romano lettuce’.”
“Falsehood.”
Roman lifted his head to turn towards Logan. The logical side had a look of determination in his eyes, a look that he made when he usually argued about something he was particularly passionate about. He looked into Roman’s eyes.
“You are worth it. Your creativity has driven Thomas into a good career, your creativity has made him wildly popular, you have made him happy. He has been statistically happier when you took the reins in the career department. Thomas has always loved you, you have been one of his favorite facets of his personality. To get rid of you now would be unproductive and pointless. You are exactly where you are meant to be. I appreciate your work and your company. I would be...upset if you weren’t here. With us.” Logan’s eyes were filled with honesty. It was clear that he meant every word. Roman sniffled.
“You mean that.” he stated.
“I do.” Logan nodded.
“You make us better.” Virgil quoted.
“And we sure love having you around!” Patton exclaimed.
Roman looked at his friends. His family. He smiled and wiped a tear from his face.
“Very princely of me, to spill my guts in front of everyone. What a hero.” Roman noted, sniffling as he spoke.
“Hey!” Patton exclaimed, a faux stern look on his face, “It’s very heroic to cry!”
“Yeah, pump the breaks Princey,” Virgil smirked, “it happens to the best of us.”
Patton interjected again, “You’d better not repress those feelings, kiddo, or I’ll have to punch ya!” Virgil and Roman laughed. Logan cleared his throat.
“If you all don’t mind, I really need to give him stitches, if you would hold still.” Logan ordered. “Roman, this will hurt.”
Roman shrugged, “I’m used to it, hit me with your best shot, Specs.” Logan rolled his eyes.
“Prep.” he said.
“Nerd.” Roman shot back, smiling into Patton’s lap.
Once Logan had finished the stitches and cleaned the wound, all four of them settled on the couch and turned on a Disney movie, “Beauty and the Beast” per Roman’s request. Patton was the first one to fall asleep, followed by Virgil at the “Be Our Guest” number (to Roman’s horror, as that act was a “masterpiece”). By the time Belle and the Beast were dancing, Roman, too, felt his eyes droop. It had been a long day. He sighed.
“Logan,” he said.
“Hm?” the logical side responded.
“Thank you.”
Roman fell asleep soon after, but before he did, he could have sworn he saw the other side smile.

Grammar Tips That Are Actually Useful #2
So I honestly didn’t expect to do another one of these, but ever since my first GTTAAU post got a whole bunch of hits over the last few days, I decided to do another one about a popular piece of grammar that I notice is often misused.
Writers, gather ‘round as we explore the dreadful and terrible aspect of writing that is the...
Epithet.
Dun, dun, duuuuuuuun!
I first want to preface this by saying that I was notorious for this. I am so sorry to everyone who read my TMNT fics from 2016; I didn’t know better and I apologise profusely!! I went entire pages without naming a character in the narrative and I have no one to blame but my own ignorance, which has now been remedied - Hallelujah!
To explain: An epithet has a few definitions, so let’s take a look at them. (Definitions courtesy of dictionary.com.)
1. Any word or phrase applied to a person or thing to describe an actual or attributed quality: “Richard the Lion-Hearted” is an epithet of Richard I.
2. A characterizing word or phrase firmly associated with a person or thing and often used in place of an actual name, title, or the like, as “man's best friend” for “dog.”
3. A word, phrase, or expression used invectively as a term of abuse or contempt, to express hostility, etc.
In other words, an epithet is an adjective or noun to describe or name someone without using their proper name.
(There’s a ton more under the Keep Reading, so buckle up.)
Epithets are used in a variety of ways to describe a variety of any character’s characteristics (haha). Most common examples for this are:
hair - the blond, the blonde, the black-haired person, etc.
eye-colour - the green-eyed person, the brown-eyed person, etc.
skin-colour - the pale-skinned person, the dark-skinned person, etc. (Side note: NEVER use food to describe skin colour/tone (eg. olive-skinned). It is offensive and wrong, so just don’t. If you have any questions, I’d encourage you to follow @writingwithcolor (which I do). They have excellent commentary for writers who write characters of varying ethnicities, religions, etc. Check out their FAQ before asking anything, though, because they’ve answered a ton of different questions already.)
status - the child, the teen, my boyfriend, his husband, etc.
profession - the engineer, the doctor, the ninja, etc.
species - the dwarf, the human, the dragon, etc.
or any combination - the green-haired teen (I saw this one in a fic from Izuku’s own POV), the orange-masked turtle (this one is mine and also from Mikey’s POV, and I am sooooo sorry.), etc.
There are, of course, dozens more of examples, but these are the most common ones, especially in fanfiction, so let’s leave it at that.
So why do writers use epithets so often?
Honestly, it becomes tedious and repetitive to write out the characters’ names all the time. It looks odd, too, all those ‘Mikeys’ and ‘Izukus’ and ‘Natasha Romanovas’ and what-nots. They’re just prancy-dancing all over your page and it looks. so. off. There’s just something about seeing characters’ names that, for whatever reason, some writers don’t like. And I kid you not, I had to train myself out of this way of thinking.
I had to train myself because as soon as I learned about epithets, I saw that I was using them absolutely everywhere. I would write literal pages without using anyone’s name, and four years later, I look back at those stories I wrote and posted publicly, and I cringe. But it’s the good kind of cringing because it lets me know how far I’ve come in my writing craft, that even though I’ve been writing for years and years, there’s always something new to learn. There’s always something to improve upon.
“Good for you, Red, but why are epithets so bad?”
Well, technically they’re not bad. They’re just used poorly or overused or both (as was my case).
We’ve already talked a bit about over usage (unless you missed the parts where I confessed to writing pages without using names), so let’s talk about poor usage.
Poor usage of epithets is when epithets are used incorrectly.
Here’s an example: Mikey looked at his red-masked brother.
Gah, that physically pained me to write! Okay, so what’s wrong with this sentence? Well, unless we’re writing for Mirage Studios’ comic (1984) where all four turtles of the TMNT wore red masks, then we’ve got a pretty good idea that ‘red-masked brother’ actually means ‘Raphael’.
Okay, great, so we know ‘red-masked brother’ is Raph, so why is this an example of poor epithet usage?
Answer: Because we already know Raph has a red mask. It is set. It is eternal. It’s a part of who he is, just like his skin or his shell. If you are at all familiar with this character, you will know that Raph is the ‘red-masked turtle’.
Here’s the thing epithets do. Epithets estrange characters from each other. This is why they’re most commonly and properly used for characters whom either we as the audience/narrator or the characters themselves do not know.
This is why phrases like ‘the dark-clad figure’ or ‘the blonde cashier’ are so popular - because we do not know who the people are! Sure, we can always go up to the dark-clad figure and introduce ourselves, or we can look at the blonde cashier’s name tag, and that’s sort of the point because we do not know who these people are yet. Epithets are used, more often than not, for unknowns until they are made known.
There are exceptions to this, of course, of course, most commonly of which are status ones: my husband, his son, their niece, etc.
These are fine, but use them wisely and sparingly (tying into the over usage part again).
Here’s a better example: I walked into the kitchen and found my husband already there and making breakfast for all three children.
‘My husband’ and ‘all three children’ are epithets, but they don’t estrange the characters, per se, because they’re letting us know who’s who and their importance to the narrator/character. That being said, you should still use ‘my husband’ sparingly because if you’re ‘my husband’-ing your husband, whose name is Henry, all over kingdom come, it begins to sound...not good. Like, why would you need to remind yourself Henry is your husband all the time? Do you have amnesia? Are you just forgetful? Are you insecure? Maybe he was unfaithful at some point and he’s doing better, but you’re internalising that and reinforcing the fact that he’s yours? Maybe you just don’t like his name? Or don’t know his name?
Hard to say.
The fact of the matter is this: the closer the characters are in terms of their relationship (platonic, romantic, as friends, as siblings, whatever), the less they will use epithets for each other.
For example: I, personally, have never thought of my mother as ‘the brown-haired woman’. She has always been mom or mum or other such derivatives. It never crosses my mind.
Contrarily, when I’m working at the book store and I’ve taken a few things up to the cash desk for a customer, I’ll let the cashier know that the items are for ‘the curly-haired woman with sunglasses’. Because she is a stranger to me.
Consider Disney’s film Lady and the Tramp (1955). I haven’t seen the live action, so I can’t make a comparison, but the 1955 version fits for what I want to talk about here.
Please name Lady’s owners.
If you said, ‘Jim Dear’ and ‘Darling’, you would be absolutely correct! While we can safely assume that ‘Jim Dear’ is actually ‘Jim’ or even ‘James’, we have no idea of Darling’s real name. Some pet names and nicknames are technically epithets if we’re being especially pedantic today (please see Disney’s Tangled’s character Flynn Ryder’s nickname for Rapunzel), but let’s say for the sake of argument that all pet names fall into the category of proper names, particularly since we’re talking about Lady and the Tramp (1955).
If you listen closely, you will notice that not once - not a single time, ever - do any of the characters that know Jim Dear and Darling call them by anything else (except for Jim Dear’s men friends at the baby shower; they all call him ‘Jim’). Even Darling’s friends call her ‘Darling’. Jock and Trusty both call Lady’s owners/masters ‘Jim Dear’ and ‘Darling’. Never ‘Lady’s owners’ or whatever else.
This is a perfect example of using names instead of epithets. It helps immensely that they aren’t main characters - secondary characters, certainly, but not main - but the point remains.
“But, Red, the Tramp never calls Lady by her name!”
And you’re right! But there’s a reason for that: Lady never formally introduced herself. The story begins in December of 1909 (thank you, Wikipedia). So by the time Lady is six months old, we’re well into 1910. Conventions in this era, as far as I know, not that I am an expert, dictate that ladies/women introduce themselves so that men could then address them (or something like that? Someone please correct me if I’m wrong). Since Lady never does that, Tramp is reduced to giving her the pet name ‘Pigeon’ or ‘Pige (Pidge?)’. Also, Lady doesn’t find out Tramp’s name until the dogs at the pound tell her.
Either way, Tramp is forced to use a pet name, but it is not an epithet simply because ‘Pigeon’ isn’t describing Lady’s characteristics.
Now, Tramp on the other hand...is a characteristic, and someone can definitely win the argument of whether this is an epithet or not. Hint: it is because it’s preceded by ‘the’. He is literally introduced as ‘the Tramp’ (Bull, the bulldog, says it first in a scene with him, Peg and the Tramp, and then Toughy drops it at the pound in front of Lady). This is his epithet, his defining characteristic, because he is introduced as it: The Tramp.
But this is not his only characteristic. He’s helpful and compassionate (the entire scene when he fights off three alley dogs chasing Lady and then proceeds to help her get the muzzle off), he’s also playful (shows Lady there’s more to life than “life on a leash”), courageous (he fights a rat), and respectful of Lady’s choices (tries to persuade her to run away with him but pursues the matter no further when she tells him ‘no’, and he also backs off when she’s mad at him).
This is what epithets do. Not only do they estrange the characters, but they also reduce the characters to a base level. Those well-rounded, complex babies you so carefully crafted become one-dimensional and flat in the span of a single phrase. They become ‘black-haired men’ and ‘green-eyed teens’ and ‘red-masked brothers’ and in that moment, that is all they are and when you continue to reinforce that, that is all the readers will see them as. Besides the fact that readers might very well forget their names entirely, especially if it’s an original work where the audience is not as familiar with the characters as they would be with fanfiction.
This is why Lady never addresses Tramp directly in the film. If she’s speaking to him, she’s looking at him so he knows she’s addressing him. It’s a subtle nuance in the film because Lady refuses to reduce Tramp to his epithet (once she learns it) because he isn’t that basic. (Another reason why Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure bugs me because I swear she actually calls him ‘Tramp’ and it feels so wrong for her to address him like that.) But Tramp gives Lady a nickname. See the difference?
So, yes. While epithets are not strictly bad, they are best when used properly and sparingly. Like, yes, please, feel free to remind us that Mikey loves his brothers and that Katsuki calls his friends ‘Spiky-hair’ or whatever. These are descriptive and good and should be used, just be aware of when and how often you use them, not to mention why. If you’re simply using an epithet for the sake of avoiding saying someone’s name, then it’s poor usage.
And holy freaking wow, this thing is ginormous! I’m going to stop here because I don’t think I can write another word about epithets and how important they are.
Thank you for reading! I hope this helps. And a reminder: check out RavenshellRorschach on DeviantArt for comprehensive how-to’s on some of English’s toughest homophones and grammar points.
Cheers, y’all!

           CHARACTER ALTERATIONS & DIVERGENCES
there will be a significant number of tweaks that are made to edward’s canon due to my belief that they are more consistent with who edward is and should have been . these include , but are not limited to:
edward never tampering with bella’s truck in any way shape or form. bella is entitled to make her own decisions, and while edward does still err on the overcautious & protective side, he would never strip her of her own agency.
the thinly veiled abstinence plotline does not exist in this world. it’s unhealthy and i don’t agree with it. while edward is traditional in many respects, and definitely more formal than the average 21 year old, he is not waiting for marriage. any hesitance related to intimacy exists purely out of fear of harming bella in the process. kay says let edward be horny in 2020.
in a similar vein, edward is not pressuring bella to marry him at all. there are no ultimatums in place regarding bella’s potential change. he still wants her to live her human life, and would like to marry her one day, but does not hold those contingencies if she makes the decision to be changed.
edward did not visit bella’s room without her knowledge beyond  one instance  - we’re not about that in 2020. when he did, it was a moment of panic over her safety ( as described in midnight sun ), and was the instance in which she said his name in her sleep. after that, he attempted to pursue her romantically in a more traditional fashion and did not return to her bedroom until it was with her consent and knowledge.
he is absolutely still broody and withdrawn, but let’s not pretend he hasn’t had any fun in his whole 100+ years of existence. his family has been his whole life, as well as the friends he has made -- while he has been lonely, he has never been alone.
he still thinks he doesn’t have a soul, and is filled with a lot of self-loathing, but it’s more closely related with personal hatred and remorse for the lives he has taken than hatred of his species. while he is dubbed as one of the vampires with more self control than others, it is because he is actively fighting what he believes to be a monster inside of him -- he cannot reconcile being both man and monster, and often defers to the latter.
i guess this isn’t so much of a canon change but ?? edward is wildly insecure and unsure of himself  - - he’s also incredibly anxious. the suave persona we see in the books is just that. really he’s just a mess.
edward’s ‘gift’ is much less of an asset than it is an incredible annoyance and frustration. he doesn’t take pleasure in eavesdropping on the innermost thoughts of others, and is often overwhelmed by tuning in to the anguish and pain from others. he has spent decades trying to fine-tune this skill and actually uses it as infrequently as possible around strangers, unless he absolutely requires it. his ability to control it is entirely dependent on his emotional state

                                                 BACKGROUND
mentions of childhood illness, anxiety murder, & suicide death below
i am going to link the WIKI here, as most of edward’s history & personality remains unchanged , but i’ll also be giving a brief overview below, including some additions to his canon.
20TH JUNE , 1897 - edward  is born the only child to edward and elizabeth masen. he is given all of life’s advantages due to his family’s wealth, but is estranged from his father. he is a rather sullen and often sickly boy - he becomes the center of his mother’s world, and music becomes the center of his. he is able to study with the finest instructors and discovers a virtuosic gift.
edward grows into a ‘fine’ young man, destined for a life just like his father. however, he isn’t like his father. he is sentimental, selfless, and kind where his father is stern, selfish, and withdrawn.  edward is able to bring out a smile in just about anyone, and though his wit is dry , he’s capable of making people laugh. he is a GOOD young man - - everyone says. he is GOOD.
THE GREAT WAR comes to a head, and edward ( driven by a sense of duty and bravery ) attempts to enlist. due to his childhood illnesses and the damage incurred on his lungs, he is deemed unfit for service. soon after, the first wave of the spanish influenza takes the life of his father. soon after, edward and his mother become ill. elizabeth begs the doctor responsible for their care to do what she cannot - save her son . death feels like a welcome friend after the suffering the illness had caused , but it does not come for him. instead, a new , excruciating pain . a rebirth - a living death.
RESENTMENT - uncontrollable anger, uncontrollable thirst color edward’s first days in his new life. he does not understand the changes that had been thrust upon him. the only constant among the chaos was carlisle. carlisle and his goodness, his unfailing faith. suddenly , edward has a father , and his paramount goal was to make him proud.
edward spends his days fighting the monster inside of him, riddled with an emptiness he could not name nor control. his talent, as carlisle described it, feels more like a curse than anything. he could read anyone -- understand their deepest most secrets, and yet he could not control or contain his own. his darkness was once again mitigated with a new light in the form of esme. esme, who reminded him so much of his own mother. esme, who had lost her own son & found someone to care for in edward. carlisle & esme and their unfailing goodness were almost too much to bear. he could not disappoint them. rather than subjecting them to emotions he couldn’t understand - he disappears.
1927 - 1931 : the monster rears its ugly head. edward abandons a humane lifestyle and becomes judge & jury for the living. he kills - - and he kills many . he determines who is worthy of living , and seeks out those that deserve to die (  his first victim is esme’s tormentor , and tens of hundreds of men like him follow ). if he must be a monster , then he will seek out other monsters as well . eventually , his guilt consumes him and he returns , eyes crimson , to carlisle & esme . what he does not expect is their undeserved forgiveness , their unconditional love. he will forever be unworthy of such love , and this thought haunts him . he is a monster , but he must do better - - for them.
the numbers of the cullen clan grow , and family replaces coven. they fall into a familiar rhythm - settling when they can , moving when they must . edward is grateful to be loved , to be forgiven , but he cannot find his own redemption. whatever heart of him is left goes to them - to his family. he is constant for them alone.  he watches their all-consuming romances blossom throughout time and cannot help but be reminded that he is alone . he fills his days  to the best of his ability , and time passes.
2017 - the cullens re-settle in forks , washington . edward plays the part of recent high school graduate on a gap year in order to buy the family more time in their place of residence. time passes.
MARCH , 2018 a frozen life jumpstarts when isabella swan moves to forks. try as he might to protect her from himself , he is drawn to her. to her goodness , her intelligence , and her clumsiness. this , he realizes , must be what his family had found - - an inexplicable drawing near , the need to be close to someone. if his heart could beat , it would beat for her.
but life is not that simple . she is fragile , and human , and he puts her at risk by simply being near her . loving her doubles that risk , and yet he does.  fiercely & unconditionally.
MARCH , 2019  he loves her so much that he thinks it is better to leave her . he cannot see past what he is , and what he is capable of . he will not risk her life . when he thinks she is gone , he risks his . the volturi won’t take the life of a gifted vampire who has committed no crime , so he sets out to do it himself.  she , in all of her goodness , saves him , regardless of whether he is deserving of it .  but it comes at the cost - to save his life , she must sacrifice her own - - she must change.
PRESENT  for the first time in his immortal existence , edward wants a life , and he wants to live it fully , but he cannot be selfish . he cannot subject bella to a life like his , and he cannot deny her her right to choose.  all he can do is love her with whatever soul he has left to love with , and protect her  ( and his family ) until his last breath .

a writeblr re-introduction
Hello writeblr!
So, I did one of these intro things a couple of months back, but that was before I figured out how writeblr worked—which meant it felt like it was time for a re-introduction!
My name is Libby, but you can call me Livvy if you like—since that’s the name I plan to publish under! My main-blog is over at @ladytauria, where I do a lot of reblogging of things I like. I’m a 21 year old ace writer living in the US Central time zone, though I keep odd hours which lead to… erratic posting. I’m an avid reader and I love hearing about other people’s writing—particularly in the vein of worldbuilding and characters. So why don’t you give this a reblog if you write:
fantasy or sci-fi of any kind
LGBTQ+ and/or POC leads
a main F/F romance
Also give this a reblog if you post (or reblog):
writing tips and advice
relatable writer things
tag/ask games
moodboards and/or aesthetics
character intros
setting intros & other worldbuilding posts
excerpts of your writing
If you hit any of those boxes, I’ll give you a follow XD
As for myself, I primarily write sci-fi and fantasy, with a focus on LGBT and POC characters.
My main novel is known as THE MARTYR QUEEN the first in an epic fantasy series of indeterminate length. It follows ALINORA MYNERVA, an elven princess who lost her homeland years ago. When she’s visited by the Reaper Elaena, she’s told things are more complicated than they appear. Fate has betrayed the rest of the gods, and convinced the usurper it is his divine mission to end the world and become god of the next. Alinora is the only one who can stand against them, being as she was never meant to exist. Alinora and Elaena are joined by the Slaeyr heirs Lyr and Ava; the pirate and magical genius Talitha Jade; and Alinora’s long estranged Slaeyr sister, Aishlynn Mynerva. With their help, Alinora intends to retake her kingdom… even if it means she has to die trying.
You can find more about it, including a masterlist of everything I’ve posted, through a link in my bio!
Please feel free to flood my inbox or shoot me a message! I love hearing about people’s WIPs and getting asked about my own. (I also really just love making writer friends!!)
For some non-writing things about me, you can click the readmore!
I live with my grandparents in the country. Well, country might be a bit of a stretch. They do own a lot of land, but we only live about a mile outside of town, and have some neighbors nearby. Unfortunately, the area only offers satellite internet, which isn’t too bad most of the time, but doesn’t support things like streaming or big downloads. (On the plus side, this has saved my wallet, as I tend to really think before I buy a game, since I usually have to go somewhere else to buy them.)
I struggle with some health issues, some of which haven’t been identified yet. (Getting to the doctor is hard when you can’t drive and your grandparents are busy!) The main issue is… well. My doctor diagnosed me with asthma, but only because I was/am too young to be diagnosed with COPD. I probably have a combination, to tell the truth. Breathing can be a struggle, especially on hot/humid days. I’ve lived with that my whole life, though—the thing I struggle with most is sleep. I’m always tired, even when I’ve slept between 8 and 12 hours. I have a hard time falling asleep, staying asleep, and getting good sleep. This means days where I have the mental energy to write are… erratic. On the plus side, when I do write, I can churn out 2k or more words, so! Not all bad 😉
Mentally, I deal with anxiety and depression, though the anxiety far more so! It’s primarily social but there’s some general in there too. I have a hard time reaching out to people but I’m always, always happy to talk! Please feel free to message me, flood my inbox, whatever! <3
Enough about my issues, let’s get to the fun stuff, shall we!
I enjoy playing video games—particularly Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, the Dragon Age series, the Mass Effect series, the Uncharted series, Portal, the Sims, and a variety of others.
My music taste is varied, and I like a little bit of everything, though I tend to stick to pop and… I guess you would call it dark pop??? I dunno??? Oh, and Epic Orchestral stuff. (Preferably with lyrics. I like to sing.) Favorite artists would be Kesha, Taylor Swift, Ruelle, Fleurie, Sam Tinnesz, Karliene, VON GREY, SVRCINA, and Avril Lavigne. And honestly, probably more than that. I listen to a lot of different artists and songs, so I could list forever.
I don’t watch a lot of TV, but some shows I enjoyed in the past were Once Upon a Time (up until season 5); Supernatural (up until Season 10); Stranger Things (so not caught up); She-Ra and the Princesses of Power; Steven Universe (so behind); both Avatar series; and an obscure little Disney show by the name of Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go. Due to the internet streaming issue, though, it’ll be a while before I can catch up on any of those. At least, not if I want to go through Netflix. (I can stream off Wi-Fi on my phone, but I don’t have Netflix on there, nor enough space to download it!)
Movies I’m a lot more varied on. My top favorites (at the moment) are Clueless, Into the Spiderverse, Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, Moana, and Tangled.

On the face of it it’s been a charmed motherhood. First she watched the talented young man leave college to succeed as an actor, treading the boards as Peter Pan in a play with Judi Dench and appearing in movies such as Gulliver’s Travels, The Riot Club and Great Expectations.
Within a few years he appeared to seamlessly achieve global musical success with a chart-topping band and which led to a much applauded appearance on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival 2019. This weekend he is appearing on the same stage as Ariana Grande at Manchester Pride.
Yet anybody who follows Olly knows it’s not all been red carpet premieres,  backstage passes and Gogglebox for Vicky, it’s also been about hearing uncomfortable truths about a son who has used his growing success as a platform to publicly campaign for LGBT rights.
Growing Up Gay
Not only has she had to listen to how he secretly self-harmed and developed bulimia as a closet gay teenager growing up in the Forest of Dean, but in 2017 she also bravely agreed to appear in an an emotional BBC Three documentary about how it can lead to mental health issues.
In Growing Up Gay Olly admitted that just driving home back to sleepy Coleford with the film crew stirred up such painful memories that it made him feel physically sick.
If that wasn’t difficult enough to hear, Vicki learned that Olly, who attended St  John’s Cof E Primary School in Coleford and Monmouth Comprehensive, had been unable to tell anyone that he was being bullied from a young age because he had long hair and seemed gay.
“When he asked if I would do the documentary, it was a bit of a decision to make because I knew it would mean digging up the past and going further into the reasons for the problem,”  said community artist Vicki.
“ I knew that having to face up to issues  I was not aware of at the time was going to be a very difficult process, but if it was going to help Olly and other people in similar situations I had to do it.
“I had to be  open and honest about everything which meant confronting my own feelings of guilt. You have to openly accept that you may have made some bad choices and decisions but you are human. It’s not about making excuses, it’s about learning from your mistakes.”
The documentary was so painful that the producers had Vicki assessed psychologically to make sure she could deal with the deeply personal issues it raised and arranged for her to have counselling beforehand.
Still a much watched video on iPlayer, it shows them sifting through photographs and videos of what his mum thought was a happy, innocent childhood on a beautiful part of the world.
“Going through the family history you see all these little happy, innocent little faces” said Vicky who also has an older son who has aspergers syndrome. “It’s terrible to think somebody could be hurting them.
“I think the bullying was mostly mental but when someone is full of joy and happiness and somebody else comes along and closes that down, it is the saddest thing.
“As parents you think you know what’s going on, you think that they are safe, they are happy, they are fed, all the boxes are ticked. But you don’t know the half of it.
“The  little things I heard about what happened to Olly that he and his brother have talked about, are awful.”
Everyone thinks their child is amazing but I knew Olly was special
Community artist Vicki said she knew “in her bones” even before Olly, 29, was born that he would go on do great things.
“Every mother thinks that, and every child is amazing, but I knew that this child was different, there was something there,” she said.
“Olly was always a bright, funny, happy child, full of life. He was such a bouncy, lovely little cherub  that I could never get cross with him,  ever.
“On the rare occasion that he would throw a tantrum I would find it funny and just laugh at him. He would just stand and scream blue murder and it was just hilarious.”
Life in the Forest of Dean
Their early days were spent living near theme parks that his father promoted but in 1997 the family moved to the Forest of Dean where his parents set about creating a model village tourist attraction.
It was a musical, creative, left leaning household and although he loves Rihanna, and famously met the singer on the Graham Norton show,  Olly, credits much of his influences to listening to his mother’s tapes of Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder. She was one of the founders of the local music festival where Olly cut his teeth.
“I used to be a puppeteer actor in an education travelling theatre company in the late 1980s," said Vicky when asked about her bohemian background.
“When I was younger I was also a backing singer in a band called Innamanna. We played the Marquee in London and did some recording but when we had to decide ‘do we stick with this or carry on with our careers?’ it folded.
"But I couldn’t stand on a stage in front of thousands of people like Olly does. I would die.”
Olly as a boy
It was clear that Olly had inherited her artistic streak and although a talented gymnast and able academic, he concentrated on music and drama, later saying it was because he felt at home with the weird kids.
Vicki remembers him being very driven, open minded and very focussed.
“Olly taught himself to play the piano and to sing and there was always a healthy competition with his best friend Joe to get the best parts in the school plays,” recalled Vicki
“He was always singing all over the house.  He loved Disney and he would get old song books full of the classics and teach himself on the piano.
“He did not want to be in musicals but loved the singing and performance side of it.”
I did not realise there was so much pain going on inside.
In the documentary the talented singer songwriter says that  he did not have the vocabulary to put how he was feeling into words and  felt too ashamed to admit it anybody he was gay. Even his mother. He desperately wanted to be straight so he never admitted it.
“On the surface he was a real high achiever so I  had no idea there was so much starting to bubble up as a young teenager,” said Vicki.
“I thought the sky was the limit for him. I thought he could do anything he could put his mind to but I did not realise there was so much pain going on inside.”
“Because he was always fun happy, smiley,  lovely child achieving lots of things at school, I thought things were fine.
“Probably my eye was  off the ball because I was going through a lot of life changes at the time and maybe I was in denial that there was something going wrong.”
Marriage split
In an interview last year with the former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell, Olly says his diaries show a clear link between his father leaving and creating a “family implosion” and his mental health health issues developing around he age of 13.
They are estranged but met up when his father contacted Olly through Twitter and in subsequent interviews it’s clear the singer was less than impressed with the reality as opposed to the imagined version of an aspiring musician father who he had always wanted to impress.
“Splitting up with their dad made life a lot harder, definitely financially, and so life was a big struggle,” said Vicki.
“That’s probably part of the reason why I had my eye off the ball. I was distracted doing other things, so we were a bit dysfunctional or a while, which I feel guilty about.
“But I don’t feel guilty about that relationship ending at all, both for the boys and myself.”
Coming out
She says although from the outside it looked like Olly was enjoying a glittering lifestyle after leaving sixth form college to travel abroad filming the movie Summerhill, he was often penniless and had to take jobs such as selling hot dogs on the South Bank in between the contracts. She wasn’t in a position to help pay the rent either.
He was 18 or 19 and involved in the gay party scene in London when he plucked up the courage to pick up the phone and tell her outright that he was gay.
Vicki said: “He had said to me once ‘I don’t think you are going to have any grandchildren’. Not taking the hint, I said ‘well never say never’.
“He obviously got to the point where he thought ‘I’d better actually say it to mum because she doesn’t get it’.
“He phoned me up and said ‘you do know I am gay don’t you?’ . I said ‘Are you? OK’ and that was it really. I suppose I had a feeling he might be but maybe I didn’t want to confirm that because of fear about what his life might become because of all the homophobia out there.”
Vicky told told her elderly mother,  who sang on Broadway with the D’ Oyly opera company before cutting her career short to get married and have a family.
“Her immediate reaction was ‘but he will not be able to go to Africa, it’s illegal in Africa’, laughed Vicky about her 89-year-old mother who follows her grandson avidly on social media and has even seen Years & Years in concert.
“Like me, she doesn’t want to see him marginalised because marginalised sections of society can  attract a lot of negative behaviour. Nobody wants to see their nearest and dearest suffer from that.”
I just hope kids today aren’t going through the same thing
From that moment on Vicky has worried about her son being the victim of homophobia and although she is intensely proud, she still fears that being a figurehead for equality could make him a target.
“I wish he felt he could have talked  to me and maybe I could have prevented all of that, but I understand that is very difficult for young people,” she said.
“I remember that feeling of not being able to talk to my parents  and I just hope kids today aren’t going through the same thing. They get more support at school than they did 15 years ago but bullying and social media trolling still happens.
“I do worry about him being exposed to bigotry and homophobia. it’s not nice to think about your child living in fear.”
In an interview last year Olly was asked if he ever wanted to confront the bullies who made his life miserable growing up but he said he doesn’t think about it much any more because his life had changed so much.
He said he still takes anti-depressants, has weekly therapy sessions and works out a lot to keep his mental and physical health on track.
While campaigning for more to be done to prevent male suicide after being named as GQ Man of the Year,  he admitted he still has occasional days when he doesn’t want to get out of bed because his life does not feel worth living and can be too frightened to go on stage, or cries when he comes off. He hides behind outlandish costumes and make up.
The fun side of having a famous son
It's clear that there is a close bond between mother and son and Olly likes her to share in his successes.
For instance in the early days the pop star  arranged for her to wear an expensive diamond necklace to the red carpet premiere of Great Expectations in which he played Herbert Pocket.
“It was insane,” said Vicki. “ We had taxi from where he lived to the red carpet and there was all these people at the barriers.
“I thought they are going to be so disappointed when I get out because I’m no-one. Somebody took me to one side while Olly went off to meet the paparazzi and because it was raining they put a brolly over my head.
“Then we went in and watched the film which was mind-blowing because I was sat next to some of the actor’s. When it was finished we went to the after-party which was all very very glam.”
Naturally shy, Vicky was overawed to meet the likes of Jeremy Irvine, who starred in War Horse.
“I was quite overwhelmed by it all at first but I have got more relaxed about being in that kind of environment,” she said.
“The whole thing is a bit surreal really. It’s a bit  like a film in itself. Once I was this close to Helen Bonham Carter who I think is fantastic, but you don’t want to go up to people saying ‘I love you’.
“Olly told me once, that when they started filming he actually said to her ‘I love you Helen Bonham Carter’ and and she said ‘I would love you too if I knew who you were’, but she later came to the stage door to congratulate him after Alice and Peter.”
More recently Vicky was overwhelmed when she was introduced the men from one of her favourite TV programmes, the Netflix series Queer Eye, at Radio One’s Big Weekend in Swansea.
“I love watching them but when Olly introduced me I didn’t know what to say and was stuck for words because I get so tongue tied,” she admitted.
Gogglebox
The star is protective of Vickyi who does not even like speaking on the stage at Coleford Music Festival but told her it was time for her to come out of her shell for Gogglebox.
“It’s different because there isn’t anybody else in the room and it’s all about Olly because that’s who they are interested in,” she said of the TV show.
“It feels really nice sitting there together eating snacks, drinking Prosecco and enjoying each other’s company, but I don’t think I have anything really  interesting to say.
“You are thinking ‘should I be on my best behaviour because I’m on tele or should I be like I am at home?’. There is a little conflict going on in your head but it’s really good fun.
“It’s weird watching yourself back,  seeing what you do, what you sound like and the faces you pull. I didn’t realise I pulled so many weird faces.”
Every week she has to decide on a comfortable top for sitting on the  sofa and says they did initially consider getting matching onesies and really mad slippers but decided against it.
She shares TV tastes with her son who loves programmes such as Killing Eve and Stranger Things and Fleabag. They also love Gogglebox, especially Rylan Clark Neal and his mother and Chris Eubank and his son. She was delighted when Rylan sent a lovely message to Olly about her.
“If Olly likes something I will give it a go because I know I will probably like it,” she says. “I would never have watched Love Island if Olly hadn’t watched it. “
Staying true to yourself
Before the Years and Years single Communion catapulted the band into into the charts, Vicky had another important phone call from the Shine singer.
“He said they didn’t want him to say he was gay and he was really cross about it because didn’t want to pretend to be something he wasn’t” she said.
“I told him to stick to his guns, that you have to be true to yourself for anything to be real. I have taught them that if they are kind, truthful and respectful to other people, everything else will follow.”
Olly took her advice and when she first went to Glastonbury to see him burst onto the John Peel stage in 2015 wearing a rainbow, Pride suit he was involved in a very public relationship with Neil Milan from Clean Bandit who were playing the Pyramid stage.
Although in  pop star mode he is happy to speak openly about his own sexuality and  ongoing struggles with anxiety, Olly also admits that the fairytale of fame and fortune has not proved the antidote to depression and he remains a leading advocate for mental health issues.
In fact Gay Times described him as one of the most influential gay pop stars of this generation and added: "All hail the King!”
Glastonbury 2019
Vicky was astounded by how big it has become since the days she used to go and got lost for hours on the first night after deciding to camp for the weekend.
On Sunday Olly arranged for Vicky, her partner Kev and Coleford Mayor Nick Penny to go backstage and then watch from the Pyramid Stage balcony as he gave a widely-applauded, eloquent moving speech marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.
Many say the speech appealing for compassion and a society that does not leave anybody behind was the highlight of the festival.
“It’s not the best view because you cannot see what’s happening from the front, but just to be there looking  out from the stage and seeing all those thousands and thousands of people who are all there to see Years and Years and Olly, well it was just mesmerising,” she said.
“That whole feeling of emotion, the pride, It’s like when you see your child in a nativity play but  a million times over.
“I knew he was going to make a speech and I knew that knowing Olly it was going to be special, but I did not  did not know the content or when he was going to say it.
“I was just so proud and when I got home I had to watch it over and over again.”
“I cannot believe how brave and strong Olly is about what he believes in. I admire that in him so much and have so much respect for him to be able to do that.”
The feeling is mutual and Olly has repeatedly spoken about how proud he was of his mum to speak so openly about his childhood in the documentary even though she is not to blame for his troubles.
Olly takes care of his family
Although he spends long periods touring with the band, when he is in London Olly has a small set of friends from home who he has known since primary school which Vickis believes it is good for his sanity.
He recently spoke about how good it has been going from being too skint to go out to be able to help his family out financially and pay for the drinks on a night out.
Thanks to Olly buying her a new house Vicky has moved from the small cottage in the centre of Coleford where she would get the odd knock on the door from Years and Years fans pretending to be looking for a non existent neighbour.
Speaking to her it’s clear that have a famous child is not too much different than having any other. You always feel guilty, you are very proud of their achievements, you want them to happy, you worry about them being safe and you lose your name. At one festival she spotted a flag saying “Olly’s Mum”, something parents all over the world can identify with.
“As a parent I think you always feel guilty, but  I’m proud that Olly has grown into this amazing human being,” says Vicki who has been on a journey alongside her famous son.
“It’s such an amazing thing to have happened that to try and get your head around it all is impossible, so you don’t bother.
“Lots of people ask about him and say things like  – ‘your boy’s doing well’ and I think ‘just a bit’. On the whole though, life just carries on as normal.”

Choose Me Again
(I posted this on ao3 like, a month ago or so, but not on here-)
Summary: Emile Picani is born without a soulmate mark, a "Spare". Thankfully he meets someone who doesn't care about the rules, and has enough overconfidence to pull off a fake soulmate mark for far too long. Emile can't help but fall in love with that sort of person. Maybe his brother was right, Deceit really is a bad influence.
Words: 5,643
Emile Picani was born without a soulmate, just a blank wrist.
His parents were a typical love story in their world. They met young, their names burning bright on their wrists, shock and awe and excitement as they realised they’d found their soulmate. They stayed together through high school, of course, and got married as soon as they finished university. His mother wore a pretty mermaid tail white dress, his father had gushed over how lucky he was to have such a beautiful soulmate, and two years later they’d had Emile’s older brother Logan, who was born with the name Roman Prince on his wrist in deep red. It sparkled in the sun, and Emile swore there were flecks of gold within it.
But then Emile was born, pale blank wrists, a doctor reassuring his parents that many people don’t develop their marks until later. That he had one patient who got it at “the cut off mark”, and how lucky they were, how close they were to not having one!
So his parents relaxed, assumed he’d develop one in due course.
He was three when he first realised he was “different” than his family. Logan was only two years older than him, and really didn’t understand as much as he’d like to pretend.  So when Emile traced over the curves of the R and asked why he didn’t have a name, Logan had said they were still looking for someone good enough for him.
Emile found it funny, had blushed, made some high pitched squawking noise, and continued playing. His parents overheard, and used it as the reason whenever the question came up. Anything to make their son feel normal.
Emile went to playgroup, met a variety of children with a variety of names. Only a couple didn’t have theirs yet, but they were too young to really understand why it was such a big deal.  Em  ile met  Remy there,  a boy with pitch black letters scrawled over his wrist, deep and inky.
“October,” Emile reads proudly, “I don’t know anyone named after a month though...”
R  emy shrugs,  picks up  a pen and starts doodling over a sheet of paper, as blank as Emile’s arms.
“It doesn’t matter. It’s a dumb name. Yours is cooler.”
E  mile smiled, gap toothed and  rosy cheeked,  looking forwards to the day he met someone with his name on them.  He liked to imagine it as pink and bubbly,  maybe with a sparkle like his brothers.  He started looking at his wrist more often, imagining  the name that would appear.
B  y the time the year ended and he had to start school with Remy, he was the only person he knew without a name. Just a blank wrist.
“It’s ok,” his mother reassures him, “my grandmother didn’t get hers until the cut off point. She was thirteen! A day later and she’d have been a Spare!”
Spare.  Emile doesn’t understand the word as an insult, but Logan does, and he understands  that it’s bad the day Logan comes home complaining  a kid called Emile a Spare.
“Like a spare pencil?” Emile asks, almost hopefully, “you know, in case you need an extra one!”
H  e was young, but old enough to recognise pity.  He sees it in how his mother smiles sadly, his brother runs a hand through his hair, and his father nods.
“Yes, Emile. Like...a spare pencil.”
R  emy  works it out before him, of course, the two sat under a tree  reading  when Remy blurts out that  his mother thinks Emile’s a Spare.
“She says you’re not gonna get a mark,” he says, “but she’s wrong. You’re not a Spare, don’t worry.”
“What’s a Spare?” Emile asks, “people keep saying the word, but I don’t get it.”
“Just means someone without a name. They used to believe it was the universe making sure there were people left over in case of death or something,” Remy says it like he’s been told it a million times, “it’s sad. I’ve never met a Spare before though. Maybe they don’t exist.”
“Maybe,” Emile agrees, and closes the book he’s reading. He finds himself drifting to books and shows without romance in them. He knows he’s not a Spare, but it doesn’t hurt to take his mind off things.
H  e likes cartoons, he discovers.  Where he can ignore romance, if there’s any,  and focus on the action, the characters.  He likes Steven Universe. He likes that even though  Sapphire and Ruby are in love, he doesn’t have to focus on it.  Besides, most cartoons didn’t have  soulmate marks.  Most of them.
“You’ve got time,” his mother reassures him when he mentions this, “and we can take you to see a doctor if you’re worried.”
He doesn’t like that, the idea that he should see a doctor, that something is  wrong  with him.  He tells this to Logan,  who presses a kiss to his forehead and tells him  he’s perfect, that  nobody deserves their name on his wrist anyway.
“Soulmates are a ridiculous concept,” Logan tells him, emphasising the large words proudly, and Emile giggles because he’s seen Logan pondering dictionaries in his spare time.
(  He giggles a little less when  Logan comes home  talking about the new kid at school, about how he’s called Roman Prince, about how Logan’s name  looks like a galaxy on his wrist and it’s beautiful.)
“Yeah, well, you’ve always got me,” Remy says with a grin, “romance sucks. You’re safe from hearing about it with me.”
“You can talk about it if you want,” Emile replies, but is grateful nonetheless.
T  hey spend their days  complaining about their teacher,  doing homework in thick  coloured pen,  then  playing Crystal Gems  in the local park.  There’s no expectations, and  nobody looks too long at Emile’s blank wrist  for it to be a bother.
H  e’s eight when he sees a Spare for the first time.  An elderly woman  with a  bright spotted  walking stick,  a pink shawl around her shoulders.  He stops to  fanboy over her  Pearl keyring,  talking about how much he loves that show, talking about cartoons and  fantasy novels.
“Such a bright boy,” she tells his parents, and he puffs his chest out proudly, “though he’s wrong, the best fusion is definitely Opal.”
E  mile is so busy spluttering and  trying to argue that he almost misses the sight of her bare wrists,  no names written on  her dark wrinkled skin.
“Mummy, she was like me,” he says.
“Yes, you both liked your cartoons!”
“No, mummy, she had a blank wrist!”
L  ogan tells him he shouldn’t have said it, that it was rude to point it out. His mother starts crying,  saying that  the woman was different,  that Emile wasn’t a   Spare  .  Later his father tells him to be careful with what he says,  even though Emile is confused.
“Why is being a Spare so bad?” he asks.
(  He sees an announcement that a cartoon loving woman is dead three weeks later in the newspaper. A funeral is arranged by her estranged brother, but  when Emile goes past the funeral that day he notices the only people to turn up are the brother and his soulmate.)
H  e hears more people say the word now he’s getting older. He’s half way to the “  cut off” point, and there are whispers. The other kids talk behind his back at school, and the whispers follow him home,  where he lies awake at night hearing  his parents sob about how they have a  Spare  as a son.
“Ignore them,” Logan tells him, “you’ll get there when you get there.”
He watches Logan laugh at Roman’s jokes, watches Roman listen to Logan’s music choices, the two watching musicals and sci-fi films on YouTube at every given chance. He’s happy for his brother, and agrees that his name looks like a galaxy against Roman’s wrist. Purple and black and blue, but shining brighter than any star he could name.
E  mile dives further into cartoons and fantasy, away from  the love of his parents, his mother’s name s  carlet and  bold, his father’s  milky and  bright as the moon. Away from the love of his brother and Roman,  red and galaxy mixing beautifully when they link arms.  Away from the world of soulmates,  so he can pretend  he’s normal.
R  emy is always there, always  arguing with people over whether Disney should s  top using soulmate marks  in their shows.  Does it matter who Moana  is  destined   to be with, after all?  But Emile doesn’t mind so much, content to watch fantasy people  have fantasy adventures, content to imagine that the concept of soulmate marks is just part of the fantasy.
R  emy meets October in the summer before they start middle school.
They’re playing on the swings, excited  to be moving up in the world.  And then a boy  with wild black curls comes up shyly, holding out his wrist,  where Remy’s name  is scrawled  in messy capital letters,  the colour of ground coffee beans.
“October?” Remy asks, and Emile knows he’s the second choice from then on out.
T  o his credit, October   –  or Toby, as he likes to be called   –  is lovely.  He passes no judgements on Emile’s blank wrist,  never mentions the concept of  Spares  , and  turns out to be a Disney fan.  He fits into their group seamlessly,  as natural as the rise of the moon,  and Emile  knows Remy’s never been happier.
M  iddle School is a nightmare. Emile quickly realises he’s the only one in the building with a blank wrist, and finds himself hiding it under cardigans and bracelets.  He pretends to be shy, changes topics from soulmates to  cartoons, and makes sure to clap and respond politely when people around him start meeting their soulmates.
“I get it, it’s a big deal for them,” he assures Logan, who looks so concerned these days, “if they’re as happy as you and Roman are then that’s all that matters!”
“I’m happy if you’re happy,” Logan tells him, and hugs him tightly.
B  ut Emile’s thirteenth birthday approaches   quick,  and Emile’s parents are on edge, each day checking his wrist, sometimes subtly, sometimes just grabbing it outright.
“He’s a Spare,” he hears his father sob, “was it something we did, do you think? I read that too much sugar in infantry-”
“Maybe I ate too much fish whilst pregnant with him?” his mother suggests, “some people say-”
T  hey don’t know Emile can hear them, and Emile feels bitter when they pretend to be happy the next day. He wants to call them out, but fears their reactions too much.  What if they’re angry with him? What if they decide it must be his fault?
H  e’s crying a week before his thirteenth birthda  y  alone in the toilets at school.  He’s supposed to be  at  Band,   but instead he’s  wishing he had a name instead of just a blank wrist.
“What’s wrong?”
He looks up at the voice,  vaguely recognising the kid looking at him.  They share a few classes, he’s pretty sure.  A boy with dark hair,  dark eyes   and vitiligo across his  dark  face.  If not for the flashes of yellow  in his clothes he could blend  in with the night better than Lapis Lazuli with the ocean.
“I’m a Spare,” he whispers, wiping his eyes, “I turn thirteen next week and I don’t have a name. My parents are going to be so disappointed.”
T  he boy hums, and  Emile sees  the name  Virgil Knight   flash across his wrist,  patchy purple and swirly.
“Parents suck. Does it matter that much that you have a name?”
Emi  le shrugs. “Logan says it doesn’t, but my parents  d  isagree.”
“Logan Picani, right?” the boy tilts his head, “he’s the kid dating Roman, the drama club guy?”
E  mile nods. “My brother.  I’m Emile Picani.”
The kid hums, then grins, walking over and grabbing Emile’s arm before he can protest. Out comes a pen, and then Emile has Deceit Hart on his wrist.
“Well, Emile, looks like you have a name. And yes, that’s my real name. My mother was angry because dad cheated on her, and I got the lifelong reminder.”
He says it dryly, but also tiredly, as if he’s had to  explain this a hundred times. And if he’s telling the truth, then  he probably has.
“Later, Emile.”
H  e rushes home to show them his “soulmate mark”.  Logan looks suspicious, but plays along, whilst his parents gush, too happy and relieved to question why it looks a little more inky than the average mark.  Roman is there, and leans  over.  The drama club guy.
“Hey, Deceit. I know his brother!”
Remy insists that Deceit start joining them at lunch. After all, Toby did, so Emile’s soulmate should as well! And Emile is certain that Deceit is going to spill the beans, out Emile as a Spare, but instead he grins and accepts the invitation, fitting in with the group so casually that Emile is almost convinced he really is his soulmate.
Deceit goes over the lines every day, and his own sleeves get longer, covering the name Virgil Knight, so nobody can argue that the two are soulmates. Emile feels bad for Virgil, whoever he is. He tries bringing it up with Deceit, pointing out that he can’t lie to his future soulmate.
“Virgil can deal with it,” the boy says dryly, “you can’t be the soulmate of someone called Deceit and not expect a few lies, can you?”
Three months later his parents insist on meeting Deceit, wanting to know what their son’s soulmate is like. Roman talks about Deceit’s brother, a kid in his and Logan’s year called Patton, who Logan speaks fondly of as well.
“I admit, I didn’t know Deceit had you as his soulmate,” Roman says, “I would’ve thought I’d noticed!”
Emile tries to laugh, but the lie still tastes bad on his tongue.
It doesn’t stop him helping to cover up Deceit’s soulmate mark with make up, then going over the now-blank wrist with a pink sharpie, his own name now looping over someone’s wrist.
“Pretty,” Deceit comments.
“I guess.”
Emile introduces Deceit to his parents, and Deceit is perfect, on his best behaviour, smiling and cracking jokes and showing interest in everything his family says. Emile wishes Deceit really could be his soulmate, and wishes he could be sure that Deceit isn’t lying about, well, everything.
“See? Not so bad. And now your name is on someone!” Deceit grins afterwards, holding up his wrist, the pink still as bright as it was when Emile first applied it.
“I feel bad lying though,” Emile mutters, “and what are you going to do when you meet Virgil?”
“I’ll just discuss it with him. I’m sure he’ll understand.”
Deceit says it confidently, and Emile thinks that’s his favourite part about Deceit. The confidence. Deceit never hesitates, never backs down, never hides how he feels. He’s chosen to represent their year group in a debate competition, along with Toby, and the two go to the finals against Logan and Patton.
(Brother versus brother!)
Logan reassures Emile that it’s ok if he wants to support his soulmate rather than his brother, and Emile can’t help but resent the statement.
But he supports Deceit regardless, because he’s convincing. He’s loud and convinced from the start that his side is right.
It’s a silly debate, really. The school have tried to keep it light, so two thirteen year olds are arguing that you should skip a wedding to go for an interview for your dream job, whilst two fifteen year olds argue that you should go to the wedding and support your friends.
“He believed in egoism – or, acting in your own self interest,” explains Deceit, smirking because he’s got everyone’s attention.
“But that’s wrong!” Patton protests, whilst Logan looks annoyed at having to reign in someone so emotional.
“No. You’re wrong.”
Emile’s heart flutters a little at how confidently Deceit can say such a bold statement – and to his own family member!
Deceit and Toby win, though really all Toby did was agree with what Deceit was saying. It was to be expected, in a way, because Deceit manages to get Mr Sanders, who is supposed to be the neutral judge, to agree with him.
“You’ve got a talent,” Logan says afterwards, whilst Patton hugs his brother tightly, “you should join the debate club. I’m happy to put in a recommendation for you to be Captain next year.”
“Nah, I’m not that fond of debating,” Deceit says, and they all know it’s a lie, because he accepts Logan’s recommendation, and the next year takes over the position.
“You’ll be in High School too soon,” Logan points out to Emile, “make sure you let them know Deceit’s your soulmate, that way you’ll be put into the same classes.”
(Emile shifts awkwardly, and Logan considers mentioning that he knows Emile isn’t Deceit’s soulmate. But he lets it go, because if his brother’s happy then that’s all that matters.)
Deceit and Emile keep up the lie throughout middle school, going on double dates with Remy and Toby in their final year, two pairs of fifteen year olds arguing over which Disney movie to watch at the cinema. Emile likes it, likes holding hands with Deceit, likes the kiss on the cheek he receives at the end.
“We’ll still be friends after you meet Virgil, right?” he asks timidly one night.
The four at at his house for a sleepover, Remy and Toby having fallen asleep during Lilo and Stitch two hours ago. The make up has smudged enough that the purple letters are just visible, and Emile’s heart aches at the idea of losing his wannabe-soulmate.
“Best friends,” Deceit promises, and kisses Emile’s forehead, “forever.”
It’s the summer before they start High School, Remy and Toby finally making themselves official, and celebrating with a week away at Toby’s grandparents’ house, a pretty cottage by the sea.
“Have fun!” Emile hugs Remy tightly, “I’m so jealous of you guys, find a pretty seashell for me, would you?”
Toby laughs as Remy returns the hug. “We can manage that,” he assures Emile, “text us if you reach your growth spurt whilst we’re gone, ok?”
“I hate you,” Emile snaps, but laughs nonetheless when his three friends crowd around him, knowing he’s easily two inches shorter than them all.
“Use protection,” Deceit teases Remy, nudging Toby in the ribs, “try wait until Wednesday.”
Emile smacks him lightly around the head, and Deceit laughs. Deceit had already turned sixteen, whilst Remy and Toby shared a birthday. Emile still had two months to go.
“Watch it, or I’ll keep you filled in,” Remy warns, but his eyes sparkle.
“Ooh, fill me, yes please-”
“Dee!”
And then for a week it’s just the fake soulmates, starting each day redoing each others’ names and planning what to do.
“I think I might dye my hair when my parents go for their anniversary this weekend,” Emile says, “what do you think?”
“What colour?”
“Pink.”
“You’ll look fantastic. I was thinking of keying our local politician’s car.”
“That’s illegal.”
“And?”
Roman walks in on them dying Emile’s hair, and calls to Logan, saying that Deceit’s clearly a bad influence on his little brother, smiling nonetheless.
“Oh yes, a terrible influence,” Deceit says dryly, running pink through the tips, “after we dye his hair pink we’re going to get our ears pierced and spray Trans Rights over our headteacher’s car.”
“That’s illegal,” Logan points out, and doesn’t understand why Emile and Deceit burst out laughing.
The pair do both things. They go to the local Claire’s to get piercings, knowing it’s not the best place but doing it anyway. The lady coos over their soulmate marks, talks sadly about how her niece is a Spare, and Deceit loudly proclaims that his brother is a Spare, and how rude it is when people use the word.
“It’s just a blank wrist,” he snaps, and pays half what he’s meant to, despite Emile trying to convince him.
“I didn’t know Patton was...”
“Oh, he’s not, I just didn’t want to out you.”
They go over to Deceit’s home to get spray paint, and Emile sees the faint chicken scratch on Patton’s wrist, decorated with drawn-on flowers. Patton sees him looking and hides his wrist.
“I think there’s more in my room,” he tells Deceit, who hurries off, then turns to Emile, “...I know you’re not my brother’s soulmate.”
Emile almost throws up, a deer caught in the headlights. How are you supposed to react when you’re called out on a three year long lie? “I’m sorry,” he whispers.
“Don’t be, I’m sure it was Dee’s idea. But I hope you two know what you’re going to do when he meets Virgil.”
Virgil Knight became Emile’s nightmare. The idea of someone who would walk into his best friend’s life, reveal the lies, and walk away with everything Emile wanted.
He began to resent Virgil, tried to imagine him as someone particularly ugly, or stupid, or nasty, someone that Deceit wouldn’t want. He knows Deceit knows his thoughts, because when deep in his hatred of the mystery soulmate he finds Dee squeezing his hand gently, thumb tracing the fake soulmate mark.
Toby and Remy return from their trip with three sacks of shells, and lie them out on Remy’s bedroom floor for Deceit and Emile to enjoy.
“Take as many as you like,” Remy tells them, and Deceit picks up a translucent pink one, feeling the spiral and the perfectly smooth interior.
“Emile, this one’s almost as beautiful as you,” he says, and Emile flushes as he takes it.
(He puts it up on his bookshelf at home, and gently holds it to his chest every night before he sleeps.)
Deceit flirts a lot with him over the summer, and he knows it’s intentional, because Deceit grins at him every time, sly and mischievous.
“You can’t do that,” he protests one day towards the end, “what would Virgil think?”
“No idea, never met him,” Deceit replies breezily, “more importantly, what do you think?”
“Huh?”
“What do you think? Like...say I kissed you, what would you think?”
Emile goes red, changes the topic, and tries to ignore the way Deceit’s face falls for a fraction of a second.
They don’t bring it up again.
And then Virgil Knight makes his appearance two weeks into their High School life.
“Deceit?”
The four look up at a tall gangly emo kid, smudged mascara and almost entirely hidden underneath a band hoodie.
“Whatever it is, I probably did it, and definitely don’t regret it,” Deceit says instantly.
“No – I mean...you’re Deceit Hart, right?”
Deceit nods, taking a bite out of his sandwich, and Emile knows what’s about to happen before the words are out of the emo’s mouth.
“I’m Virgil Knight. I...I’m your soulmate.”
Emile’s life falls apart in slow motion.
First, Remy tells Virgil he’s wrong, because Emile is Deceit’s soulmate, and shows Virgil his wrist.
Then Remy sees the name is smudged, because for the first time in three years Emile’s fake soulmate mark has smudged, as if it knew what was about to happen.
Next, Virgil rounds on Deceit, demanding to know why his name is on someone else.
Toby is in shock, staring as the scene unfolds.
Remy is yelling, Virgil is crying, people are watching.
And Deceit is silent throughout, looking thoughtful, as if debating on what to say, as if anything could make this situation anything less than humiliating and painful.
“Nice to meet you Virgil,” he says finally, “this is Emile, he’s my best friend.”
Virgil explodes, and Emile later compares it to when Pearl gets popped and her clone goes nuts.
Virgil is screaming, grabbing Deceit’s wrist, seeing the make up cover up his name, demanding to know why Deceit doesn’t want his actual soulmate.
Emile, Deceit and Virgil are sent to the headteacher, who takes Virgil’s side, pointing out that lying about your soulmate is a crime in some countries. He asks Emile who his real soulmate is, and realises a moment later that Emile just has a blank wrist.
“It was my idea,” Deceit says quickly, seeing the tone of the headteacher change rapidly, “please don’t get mad at Emile, this whole thing is because of my actions.”
Emile is sent home nonetheless, and his parents alternate between being furious and being distraught. He can’t tell if they’re upset he lied to them, or if they’re upset because he’s a Spare.
“I can’t believe you’re blank,” his mother sobs, “you’re a – how could – my own son is a Spare!”
His father comforts his mother, and Emile quickly realises where the two stand. There’s anger inside him, boiling up, bitter and dark. It wasn’t fair that they were crying over his blank wrists, it wasn’t fair that everyone’s ideas of him changed when they found out he was a Spare.
“Everyone at school thinks it’s your fault,” Remy tells him down the phone, “...you could have told me you were lying, you know.”
“I’m sorry,” whispers Emile, “I didn’t think it’d get so...like this...”
“We’ve been friends forever, Em! You shouldn’t have hid this from me!”
“I’m sorry.”
He hates having to tell Logan, and cries as he does,
“I’m not angry at you,” Logan reassures him, “though it was a reckless decision to make. Is it really so bad to have blank wrists?”
“I don’t want to be a Spare,” Emile snaps, “you don’t know what it’s like, Lo, when everyone makes a thousand judgements at once because part of your skin is blank. It doesn’t feel good! I hate it! I hate everyone! I hate myself!”
(He cries late into the night.)
Remy and Toby approach him the next day at school, wrapping their arms around him gently.
“I’m sorry,” he whispers.
“We’re not angry at you,” Toby says quickly, “or Dee, really. It was a dumb thing to do, but...yeah...”
“Just tell us next time,” Remy says gently, “it hurt, Em, no lie. But we still love you. Just...be honest with us in future.”
Emile is grateful for his friends, because Deceit has been removed from his classes, placed into ones with Virgil. He hears nothing from Deceit for three days straight, and he’s so convinced that Deceit has dropped him now he has Virgil.
Then Deceit breaks into his bedroom late at night, looking worse for wear, with dark circles under his eyes and a bruised cheek.
“Surprise!”
“Dee, breaking into places is illegal.”
“I know.”
Emile hugs him tightly, and cries softly when Deceit pulls him close, soft and firm and warm and perfect.
“Why didn’t you message me?”
“My brother took my phone,” mutters Deceit, sitting down and pulling Emile onto his lap, “says I need to learn to be responsible.”
“Your cheek-”
“Yeah, turns out my mum considers the whole lying about your soulmate thing to be a lot like cheating. Virgil agrees, so I’m kinda outnumbered. I, uh, don’t think Virgil expected her to react so badly though.”
Emile presses a gentle kiss to Dee’s bruise.
“What’s Virgil like?”
“Annoying. I mean, he’s cool and all, but being forced to spend all your time with an emo whose life revolves around My Chemical Romance is a pain. Plus he’s really angry with me, and we have nothing in common except for a love of Harry Potter. And he doesn’t even know what house he is!”
Emile laughs, because out of everything Deceit could be annoyed about, the Hogwarts House seems to have gotten him the most worked up.
“-And I said, maybe he was a Hufflepuff! But nope, he rejected that too!”
“Tell him he’s a Hufflepunk,” suggests Emile, “he might prefer that.”
Deceit pouts. “No way, there’s only one Hufflepunk in my life.” And he runs a hand through Emile’s pink hair, smiling softer than Emile’s ever seen.
“...I wish you really were my soulmate,” Emile confesses.
“I don’t,” mutters Deceit, “the whole thing is stupid, being made to be close to someone just because you have their name on you...”
“My name’s been on you for three years.”
“That’s different. You were a choice.”
Later, neither would be sure of who kissed who first, but Emile likes to think he made the first move, clumsy and awkward, lips meeting Deceit’s in a silent declaration of love.
“Then choose me again,” Emile whispers, pleads, and Deceit kisses him back.
To say Virgil dislikes this turn of events would be an understatement. Emile can’t blame him – to be told your whole life that you would meet a person who would love you forever, and then that person turns around and says no?
“I’d still like to be friends,” Deceit tells him quickly, “you seem great, and I’m happy to have met you, I just-”
“I can’t believe that between me and a Spare, you chose the Spare.”
“Don’t call him that.”
“I’m meant to be your only choice,” mutters Virgil, “not second to some...blank wristed nobody.”
Deceit rolls his eyes. “I can choose who I like. And I choose Emile, blank wrist and all.”
Virgil makes his dislike of Deceit and Emile obvious from then on, and does his best to avoid them, but destiny forces soulmates together one way or another, and within a year Virgil gives up on avoiding them, instead calling a truce of sorts.
Remy and Toby are silently thankful throughout that their own lives have a lot less drama in them.
Roman is happy for Deceit and Emile, simply stating that he finds the choice a lot more romantic than a typical soulmate meeting.
Patton comes around eventually, but it puts a rift between the brothers, and Virgil becomes closer to Patton pretty quickly.
“What university are you applying for?” Deceit asks Virgil when the time comes, “I want to make sure I’m applying elsewhere.”
“Fuck off,” snaps Virgil, “I’m not sharing anything with you.”
(So of course they end up applying to the same places, and Virgil goes to Patton in distress, complaining about how the universe hated him and that destiny was out to get him.)
“We’re just doomed to keep running into Virgil,” Deceit tells Emile, Remy and Toby, “I hate it.”
“Maybe you guys will be friends, eventually,” Toby suggests.
“Maybe.”
Emile’s parents never quite get over having a Spare for a child. They get Emile to specialists all over the country, as if that could do anything, until Logan puts his foot down, demanding they stop putting so much pressure on him to be “normal”.
Emile goes to the same university as Logan, eagerly telling his friends about his plans to study psychology there.
“I’m thinking of becoming a therapist,” he says, “I think I’d be good at it.”
“I think so too,” Remy says, smiling.
“You’re good at lots of things,” Deceit comments, and winks, “but does this mean I’ll be able to call you doctor and get you to-”
“Dee, if you end that how I think you’re going to end that, I’ll kill you,” Toby says seriously.
“Kinky,” Emile and Deceit say at the same time, and Toby gets up and leaves.
“That makes no sense!” they hear him yell, and Remy just shakes his head.
Deceit gets a snake tattooed around his wrist, covering up Virgil’s name. In response, Virgil gets a band of music notes over a galaxy sky, covering up Deceit’s.
“Want me to get your name tattooed?” Deceit asks Emile one day, the pair lazing about on a hot summer day.
“Not really. I’ve had enough of names,” Emile holds up his own blank wrists, “besides, then I’d get yours done, and I’ve come to like my blank wrists.”
“I like them too,” Deceit says, capturing them lightly and kissing Emile, “though they’d look even more pretty wrapped up in rope...”
Emile shakes his head, mutters that Deceit has no chill, and kisses him back. And if he deepens the kiss a little and mentions where Deceit might find some rope, then, well...that’s just a bonus.
There is no ending to their story, of course not.
Emile is a Spare, and every time someone sees his wrists they do a double take, look at him in sympathy, or offer him the number of a doctor that definitely knows how to “cure” that sort of thing. As if having no name was equal to an illness.
(Emile eventually starts explaining to these people that he is a doctor, and he knows better than to trust any that claim they can cure the lack of a soulmate mark.)
Deceit’s name is covered up, and someone will always whisper about it, expecting some sort of story behind it. And there is, yes, but Deceit has a dramatic flair and prefers to give over the top excuses every time.
(Eventually Emile convinces him to start writing his stories, and his books become world famous.)
Logan and Roman get married, a typical soulmate story, and Emile begs to be a bridesmaid.
Patton meets his soulmate, and Virgil ends up joining them in a polyamorous relationship of sorts. There’s never any real forgiveness between Virgil and Deceit, but the two can’t stop running into each other and eventually create their own terms of peace.
Remy and Toby don’t get married, but stay friends with the pair throughout their life, because as Deceit and Emile know, sometimes it’s the people you choose that you’re closest to.
“I’m glad I chose you,” Deceit tells Emile each morning, waking him up with kisses and a squeeze of the hand. Emile smiles every time, knowing exactly what he means.
“I love you too.”

Wanda Vision
Concept and Prediction
Obviously besides the Scarletvision-ers or Wanda stans the hype for the MCU Disney+ shows are way more on the side of Falcon and Winter Soldier or the Loki series. However a recent rumor has beyond sparked my interest. Do know that the prediction best works if you know a little bit of Scarlet Witch from the comics and the FX X-Men show Legion.
The rumor is that the series will take place in the 1950s...? Sounds pretty lame - NOT EVEN THE SLIGHTEST! Quickly: Legion is a trippy cerebral series based on Professor Xavier’s estranged son in the comics titular Legion David Haller. The show is so splendidly weird and psychedelic presumably taking place in the 60s when on this plane of existence but they jumped around on so many different planes on a given episode - trust me it’s amazing! Why does this matter? By comparison Legion’s template offers an opportunity for Wanda to demonstrate her reality warping chaos magic.
Early on in the MCU Wanda displayed the ability to not only see people’s fears but was also able to manifest them to an extent. While this isn’t reality warping it is a step in that direction. But now why Leave it to Beaver? Taking the old stereotype that third world countries were only able to watch black and whites shows on tv even in the 2000s what if Wanda grew up watching these types of American nuclear family shows while living this happy life with mom dad and brother. After years of tragedy then with Vision she started hoping to one day have that life again with him until tragedy strikes again. In her despair she could start have these weird dreams where she’s a housewife to human Vision and loving mother to sons Wiccan Billy Kaplan and Speed Tommy Shepherd. In the comics their initial children did have this type of creepy storyline as well so roll with me.
The series grows from funny sitcom-y to more twisted fantasy as she realizes the life she’s living is completely fake and entirely in her mind. But why would she keep herself in this reality for so long? Perhaps it’s a sad display of where her mind is and she prefers this fantasy to the pain of the real world. Or perhaps she’s trapped in it by a psychological and twisted villain like Mephisto from the comics or Nightmare rumored to be the villain of Doctor Strange 2. Wanda would not only has to escape this mental prison against a worthy threat but she also has the opportunity to expand her powers on this dreamscape. But in the same crazy way as Legion did Wanda could possibly challenge what is truly real and could begin to warp the reality around her to her liking which could include escaping back to the real world bringing Vision and her children back with her.
Now Legion is in no way a show suitable for Disney+ but conceptually I still believe this prediction is doable given the craziness of some of today’s “kids shows.” With Disney+ series being the first of small screens to affect the greater MCU this is a perfect way to display Wanda’s omega level abilities and to introduce those Young Avengers members.

{ henrik holm / 24 / cismale / he/his } I know Atlas City is a big place, but have you seen ludvig eskett around here. Gossip says they can be oblivious, but they’re redeemable because they’re also endearing. When ever I hear their name I think of woods filled with snow, morning runs and snapbacks. If you asked them one thing they couldn’t live without they’d probably say his favorite hoodie. If you hear in motion (the range remix) by colouring blasting you know ludde is near by.
SUMMARY
A CHARMING MOTHERFUCKER WITH A SECRET OR TWO.
BACKGROUND
ludvig eskett aka ludde was born in the beautiful, but very cold town of bergen, norway in 1994. he grew up in a sweet and loving family, surrounded by nature and outdoor activities.
he is the youngest of two boys and along with his brother, he had a very happy and active childhood. from a young age, it became obvious that our boy was gifted when it came to sports.
so, his parents, very smartly, enrolled him in the town’s children’s hockey team and the rest was history. the boy only got better and better at it, always team captain, always the coaches’ favorite player, the team’s golden boy.
going into high school and his teenage years, ludde LOVED the popularity that his hockey star status gave him. he had girls and boys adoring him and he always made most of it, starting to explore with both (he’s my pansexual baby love).
( mental health tw ) however, things for ludde started to change. from feeling like he was constantly on top of the world, suddenly all the love and affection of an entire town didn’t feel like it was enough. sometimes he just couldn’t bring himself to care about anything or anyone, barely finding the strength to get out of bed in the mornings, his performance in hockey now a ghost of what it used to be. his parents and coaches took notice and after blurry long months of visits to the doctor, ludvig was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
for a few years, it felt as if ludde and his support net had things under control. some days were harder than others but he was finally learning to live with bipolar. he was about to graduate from high school and had plenty of university offers from all over europe and the united states alike. ludde felt on top of the world again. he was feeling so so good, he decided to stop taking his meds.
and then one day, another manic episode arrived. he had been feeling the symptoms for a few days prior but still, he was feeling so good. it was his high school prom night after all. he had been drinking pretty much all evening and well into the night with his friends and his teammates. then ludde and his best friend thought it might be a good idea to drive to the fjords to see the sunrise and so they took ludde’s father’s car and drove into adventure. ludde, manic and drunk, crashed the car not too far away from bergen. his first instinct was to call his older brother who very quickly got to the scene and told his brother and his friend to disappear before the police arrived. no university would want a drunk driver with a misdemeanor charge. so, ludde fled the scene and his brother took the fall for him. ( mental health tw ends here )
now it must be noted that ludde’s brother didn’t have such a clean perfect record as his brother. he had already been caught driving under the influence and in possession of drugs. so this was the last straw and he was sentenced to serve jail time.
ludde’s family made sure to hide his involvement in the crash very well, it’s their best kept secret. and so they decided it was best to keep him as far away as possible, they couldn’t risk the guilt or his sense of righteousness to get in the way of his hockey career.
that’s how ludde ended up in atlas city. after accepting the scholarship offer from the town’s university, he has been here for about 5 years.
his relationship with his family is quite estranged now and he has not been back home since the day he left. even though he resents his parents for putting hockey first, he still wishes to make up with his brother.
however, he’s overall very happy now. enjoying his last year of university and taking care of his mental health, day by day, minute per minute.
HEADCANONS
ludde’s goal is to become a pro hockey player and play for NHL, ‘cause well, that’s what his parents wanted of him. but he’s slowly caring less and less about all that.
he’s basically disney’s hercules ok. kindest, most loyal motherfucker you’ll ever meet. seriously, people take advantage of him VERY easily.
he’s studying sustainable design and architecture in atlas U. he dreams of working on that field one day.
LOVES the snow and thrives on colder climates. do with that info whatever you want.
also, probably not a headcanons but i based ludde off another ludde from the swedish webseries eagles and my LOVE, SUNSHINE, even bech næsheim from skam og.
and you know that song liability by lorde? well, that’s how he feels most of the time, he just hides it very well.
ALSO!!! HE WAS KEPT THE CAR CRASH AND HIS MENTAL ILLNESS PRETTY MUCH A SECRET FROM EVERYONE IN ATLAS. OK, I’M FINISHED FOR REAL NOW.
SOME WANTED WCS
an exes plot based on all too well by tswift.
another plot based on liability by lorde obvs.
HIS BEST FRIENDS: from uni, from hockey, from the dorms, from the bar, give him his tribe, he needs it.

Muse A hates that their older sibling is such a weird jerk, but sometimes Muse B can be kinda nice and Muse A is beginning to think maybe they aren’t all bad.
Muse A has been over protective over Muse B ever since their parents died.
Muse A acts like they’re Muse B’s parent when they’re not. Muse B wishes that Muse A could just act like their sibling, instead.
Muse A is the baby of the family and can get away with pretty much anything. Muse A agrees to take the fall for something Muse B does in exchange for something else.
Muse A and Muse B are twins. No one can tell them apart and it’s made them resent each other.
Muse A and Muse B are twins. They are each other’s best friend and it’s become very difficult for them to get close to anyone else. One day, Muse A brings home a new friend and Muse B doesn’t like them.
Muse A has their license and Muse B does not. Their parents make Muse A drive their sibling around all the time.
Muse A has always wanted a younger sibling and when their parent’s adopt Muse B, they’re determined to be the best older sibling ever.
Muse A and Muse B are siblings. Their parents are absent/neglectful and Muse A often has to pick up their slack so that Muse B doesn’t feel like they’ve been forgotten about.
Muse A is violent or scary and Muse B can’t take it, anymore.
Muse A wants to be just like Muse B when they grow up.
Muse A never knew they had a long lost twin until, one day, they meet Muse B.
Muse A’s parents always liked Muse B best, but that never mattered because Muse B always liked them better than their parent’s, anyways.
Muse A jokingly threatens to sell Muse B as they’re setting up for a sale. Muse B thinks they’re being serious.
Muse A has always tried to shield Muse B from the kinds of things that their family does, but when Muse B starts digging where he shouldn’t be, Muse A realizes they can’t protect Muse B from their legacy any longer.
Grandparent/Grandchild:
Muse A is such a doting grandparent, but Muse B is really embarrassed about it.
Muse A thinks that Muse B is just a freeloader and an ungrateful brat. Muse B thinks that Muse A is an entitled, heartless, old hag.
Muse A doesn’t remember that Muse B is their grandchild, anymore, but that doesn’t stop them from enjoying the company of such a nice kid.
Muse A was given rules for Muse B to follow while they were staying with them from their parents, but Muse A doesn’t agree with them and throws those out in favor of their own rules.
Muse A is estranged from their child, but they’ve been given the chance to connect with Muse B and want to use it to get closer to Muse B’s parent, again.
Muse A tries to be a kid that Muse B would be proud of, but nothing they do seems to make Muse B happy.
Muse A is excited that Muse B is coming to visit, knowing that they’re going to be given a unique gift from Muse B’s travels as soon as they arrive.
Muse A loves visiting their grandparent’s house, but when they decide to stay the night one time, they start getting home sick. Muse B has to try to distract them from it or convince them that it’s not so bad.
Muse A is a little kid and their parent’s are too overprotective, but when they’re over at Muse B’s house, they’re allowed to have a lot more freedom.
Muse A is known for being the best baker in the entire family and Muse B is determined to get into their kitchen and learn all their secrets.
Muse A stays at their grandparent’s house while their parent’s are moving. Muse B can tell all this change is weighing pretty heavily on them.
Muse A takes Muse B to the zoo.
Muse A has lots of old family photos that they want to share with the rest of the family, but Muse B is the only one who is willing to sit and look at them.
Muse A tells outrageous stories and Muse B has a hard time believing they’re true, but they love hearing them, anyways.
Muse A only comes around to be fed, but Muse B is just happy that their grandchild bothers to visit them.
Muse A gets transported back in time to when they’re grandparents were younger. They meet up with Muse B and decide to stick close to them because they’re the only thing that’s vaguely familiar in all this.
Muse A realizes that Muse B doesn’t know basic survival skills and decides to teach them.
Muse A has no idea what kinda things Muse B is getting up to when Muse A isn’t around.
Muse A is so much like their parent that Muse B often mistakes them for the same person.
Muse A is having a grandparent’s day at school and has asked Muse B to attend.
Extended Family:
Muse A doesn’t get along with any of their cousins, but Muse B is absolutely the worst.
Muse A hates family reunions, but at least they’ll get the chance to see Muse B.
Muse A and Muse B were really close when they were little, but when Muse A’s aunt and uncle moved away, Muse B went with them. Years later, Muse B is gonna be in the area and wants to catch up.
Muse A doesn’t remember how they are related to Muse B, but all that matters is that they are the last piece of family that they have left.
Muse A’s grandparent’s have a lake house that they want to snatch for the weekend, but Muse B shows up and says they want it to. Their grandparents say that if they cannot come to an agreement, then they will just have to share.
Muse A gets an invitation to attend Muse B’s wedding. Muse A wants to support their family, but Muse B is getting married to that old hag they were dating in high school that Muse A never got along with.
Muse A belongs to a family that cares very much about their reputation and they do too; Muse B couldn’t care less.
Muse A has been sent by their parent’s to spend the summer living with Muse B - A distant relative who runs a tourist trap in the middle of a desolate town by the lake.
When Muse A’s parent’s pass away, they are sent to live with the closest living relative. This seems fine, except for the part where the manager of their affairs interprets “closest living” as the one who lives the closest and they don’t know who Muse B is, at all.
Muse A runs away from home after a fight with their parents and shows up on Muse B’s doorstep in the middle of a storm, soaking wet.
It hit everyone in the family very hard when Muse A’s parents died. Muse A is nearly an adult, now, but Muse B is determined to see to it that they are taken care of, anyways. Muse B knows it’s what Muse A’s parents would have wanted.
Muse A has married into Muse B’s family and Muse A is determined to make them feel like they belong there.
Muse A is Muse B’s goofy aunt/uncle. Normally, when they get together it’s just to do something fun, but this time Muse A has something serious to talk about.
Muse A and Muse B have never gotten along their whole lives. Unfortunately, their enmity is now starting to get in the way of the happiness of their children.
Muse A wants to go to a Parent/Child picnic with their buddies, but doesn’t have a kid to bring with them. They decide to steal one of their siblings kids, promising to reward Muse B if they play along.
Muse A and Muse B are always trying to compete for their family’s attention, eventually leading them to hate each other.
Muse A has never felt like they belonged to their family, only to discover they had been adopted as an infant and Muse B was their last living relative from their blood family.
Muse A usually gets along with Muse B, but they said that Muse B is like their parent - Who Muse B hates - and now they aren’t talking to one another.
Muse A is distantly related to a powerful ruler of another country, Muse B. Because Muse B has no children of their own, they have decided to bring in Muse A to prepare to take the throne when they pass.
Muse A has never had an aunt/uncle until Muse B shows up and claims to be the long lost sibling of Muse A’s parents.
Found Family:
Muse A has taken on Muse B as an apprentice, but he’s starting to think of Muse B as more of a child who needs their protection.
Muse A does not care for children... Except maybe for Muse B.
Muse A‘s children have been distant for a long time and they don’t see think they’ll ever be able to reconcile, but Muse B reminds Muse A of them so much.
Muse A is responsible for training Muse A the same way someone once trained them, but Muse A starts to feel a much stronger bond between them than instructor/instructee.
Muse A finds Muse B sitting on a street corner, all alone and begging for money. Muse A invited them to come home with them for a meal and a hot shower.
Muse A doesn’t normally make such reckless decisions, but they can’t help it if they have a little bit of a soft spot for Muse B.
Muse A finds out that Muse B doesn’t have any parents and decides that they’re Muse B’s parent now.
Muse A is a troublemaker that gets themselves into trouble and Muse B is determined to set them straight.
Muse A cussed out Muse B the first time they met and Muse B thought it was kinda funny. They shouldn’t be rewarding such insolent behavior, but they can’t help it if they just grow more fond of the brat every time Muse A does something like that.
Muse A has always looked up to Muse B as a role model. When they finally achieve their dreams of working beside them, Muse B decides that they’re going to teach this bright-eyed kid everything they know.
Muse A is prone to picking fights and Muse B has to save their ass, again.
Muse A doesn’t have any family willing to come see them perform, so they give Muse B their extra one ticket, instead.
Muse A doesn’t know anything about Muse B, but apparently they’d been close to Muse A’s late mother.
Muse A has recently learned he comes from a culture that he was never raised with. Muse B is old and never had any children, but is determined to pass on this culture to someone.
Muse A has worked for Muse B for some time. When Muse A is kidnapped and tortured to get information about Muse B, they don’t crack. Muse B is pleased with their loyalty and decided to take a special interest in them.
Muse A hates people like Muse B, but Muse B is determined to show them they’re wrong by doing everything in their power to take care of them.
Muse A was left, as an infant, on Muse B’s doorstep years ago. Although Muse B raised Muse A with the knowledge that they were not actually Muse A’s parent, they have acted as such for as long as Muse A can remember.
Muse A says that they’ll grow a beard after Muse B says they can’t think of them as a parent because they don’t look old enough.
Muse A insists that Muse B live with them after learning about the awful place they currently call home.
Muse A is forced to chose between their biological son that grew up estranged from them or Muse B, who they have raised from a young age like their own child.

Buy More High School Ch 10, Trick or Treat
A/N: Hey, how are you? Welcome back to the insanity that is Buy More High. Working with different authors has helped me realize part of the problem I was having with this fic and with Casey & Walker. I got it in my head that chapters had to be a certain length. What I've learned is get done what you're trying to get done, and it will be okay. So I think this is off hiatus. Also, your folks reviews to Pump Up the Jam made me get the itch again for my stuff (Not gonna lie the team up with SC is a blast) Don't know how regular this update will be but I know we've got at least three or four chapters left in this one, maybe more. Welcome to Ch 10, Trick or Treat
Disclaimer: I don't own Chuck, and I love this time of year.
"Really Miss Walker," Roan said with a smile taking in her costume. It was Halloween morning, and students and faculty alike were dressed up in some type of costume.
"You don't like it?" she asked, turning from one side to another to model the outfit. She was in the full Elizabeth Swann pirate costume, complete with brown vest, trousers and boots. The white shirt underneath had the puffy sleeves, and a long brown coat completed the ensemble.
"Oh, I think it's wonderful, my only question is has Charles had a heart attack yet after seeing you?" Roan's eyes were twinkling.
"I think he likes it," she replied coyly.
Roan raised an eyebrow, making Sarah grin. "I would say he's a fool if he doesn't.
Sarah leaned in towards Roan. "He said, and I quote, 'Shiver me timbers! I hope I'm getting pillaged later." Roan threw his head back and roared with laughter. "I have no idea what he means," she said innocently.
"I'm sure you don't Miss Walker, I'm sure you don't." Roan shook his head. "As for why I'm here, I think we finally have the diction right for Mr. Masters."
"I thought that was Cole's job?"
Roan rolled his eyes. "Mr. Masters struggled with Mr. Cole's accent. He was enunciating exactly as Mr. Cole, and that would have been fine, except Mr. Masters is American. I checked the rules, there a good chance points would have been deducted from Mr. Masters. I also sent an email to Mr. Quinn explaining to him all the hard work the students are doing."
Sarah smiled. "Thank you, Roan."
"Thank you, Sarah." He left and she went back to straightening the room.
"I'm so sorry I'm so late captain." Sarah turned around and saw her boyfriend with a cheeky smile. "I do hope you don't keelhaul me."
"I would never keelhaul you." She began to walk toward him slowly. "I mean you are my mate in almost every way of the word."
"Almost?" Chuck asked. Sarah stared at him for a minute and shook her head. "What?"
"Married, you numbskull."
"Ohhhh."
She tilted her head to the side. "Calm down, Chuck. I know both of us have had negative role models when it comes to marriage in our lives. I wasn't suggesting anything."
"Huh," he said, crossing his arms.
"What does that mean?"
"It means, earlier when you said you'd give me no quarter I didn't think you meant twenty-five cents." His eyes were twinkling.
She reached over to swat his arm. "Shh! You'll get us in trouble."
He grinned at her, and started to walk away, but paused. "You know sometimes when someone sees people screw up, they learn what to do and believe they can do it better."
"Oh, really, Mr Bartowski?"
"In fact, I would say, if you found someone you truly trust and rely on, you would be more than willing to take that chance."
"I take it you have someone in mind for that?"
"That's correct Miss Walker, or should I say Dread Pirate Walker."
"Keep that up Bartowski, and I'll shiver ye timbers."
He grinned at her. "You already cause me great emotion, Sarah," he said softly as he walked out. She put a hand down to steady herself on the desk in front of her.
"Blimey," she muttered.
-ooooo-
They were curled up on the couch, after the long day of school, and handing out candy. Sarah convinced Chuck to watch her favorite horror movie, Halloween. Chuck was trying not to scream every time the music changed.
"I think you did this on purpose," Chuck said to her with a glare.
She grinned at him. "Chuck, did you know that guys used to have this move back in the day where they took their dates to horror movies, just to have them cuddle into them."
He sat up, looking proud of himself. "AHHA! You don't really like this movie, you just wanted me to cuddle with you."
"Or I really like this movie, and I like you cuddling with me," she replied.
"I thought it was to make moves on women…are you trying to make moves on me woman?"
"I mean I am, but you seem to not notice."
"How can I notice that you're over there trying to hint at sexy time when I'm terrified? Huh? Tell me!"
Sarah threw back her head and laughed. "How about this? We finish this movie, you bury your head in my shoulder each time you get scared, and we'll finish with something less scary."
"We talking another movie or sexy time?"
She grinned at him. "Play your cards right, both."
"I hope not that Disney Ichabod Crane movie, that thing is scary."
She studied him a second. "You're serious."
"The Headless Horseman has a stupidly massive sword!"
"Chuck Bartowski, you can't sit here and tell me that movie legitimately scares you?" Chuck didn't say anything. "Fine, It the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown?"
"I do love the Great Pumpkin," Chuck said, leaning back into her. "That other thing should NOT be seen by kids."
"Would you let your kids see it, Chuck?" She couldn't believe those words had slipped out of her mouth but after the discussion earlier today…well, she just couldn't help herself now.
He turned his head to her. He was quite for a second, and then grinned. "Probably. I'm sure their mother isn't the scaredy cat I am." She looked into his eyes, and knew what he was up to. She nodded once turned back, and started the movie back. He hid his head into her shoulder again, making her laugh. "For the record, that comment about my kids' mother really isn't saying a whole lot."
"I'm aware, Chuck," she said, stroking his curls soothingly. "I'm well aware."
-ooooo-
Three and a half weeks later Sarah found herself in the store, shopping for Thanksgiving. Ellie and Awesome had to work, so they were having dinner at Chuck and Sarah's a few days early. Ellie had come into their house, taken over the kitchen, to Sarah's delight, and began to send Chuck to the store for some supplies. Sarah went instead of Chuck, telling him to spend time with his family.
She was in the spice aisle when her phone rang. "Hey, Ellie. No, it's fine. I'd rather go, plus we both know if we sent him there is no telling what he'd bring back. Ellie, I love him dearly, but we both know him. Okay, I'll see you soon."
She walked around the aisle, and bumped into a gentleman in his 50s. "Excuse me, Miss."
"My fault," Sarah said. He smiled at her and she noticed his eyes…eyes that reminded her of someone…two someones. "I'm sorry, I'm buying some supplies for our Thanksgiving dinner tonight."
"Uh, I don't think tonight is Thanksgiving," the man replied with a grin.
Sarah chuckled. She felt like she could be open and honest around this man and she had no idea why. "My boyfriend's sister is a doctor and has to work Thanksgiving."
"Well, that's Aces. You should always be with family while you can."
"You have any plans?"
He shook his head, a sad smile on his face. "My family and I are….estranged."
Sarah nodded. "Yeah, I'm the same way with my family. I'm Sarah," she said, reaching out her hand.
"They call me Mr. B," the gentleman replied, sticking out his to shake her hand. "Well, I don't want to keep you." Sarah smiled, nodded, and continued her shopping.
A few minutes later her phone rang again. "Ellie…yes, I have it. Nope, I'd much rather you call and make sure. Sorry I'm running late, I ran into this nice man and got to talking. He doesn't have a family to spend Thanksgiving with. Really? We don't really even know him. Sure, I have no problem with it. He seems to be a nice gentleman. Sure." She hung up her phone and searched for the man. She couldn't find him until she was out in the parking lot. "Mr. B!" she yelled. It seemed to take a second for him to realize she was talking to him. He turned towards her. "Would you like to join us for Thanksgiving Dinner?"
"I couldn't intrude," he replied. "Besides, you barely know me."
Sarah shrugged. "It's Thanksgiving, everyone deserves to be with family, blood or not."
He studied her a second, nodded, and helped her load groceries into the vehicle. He stopped before he got into the car. "Sarah, are you sure about this?"
"I'm positive, now get in." They got into the vehicle, and drove to her house. They got out, brought the bags in, with Mr. B lagging behind, Sarah not noticing. She went into the house, headed into the kitchen and began to sit things on the counter.
"Hey, Sarah," Ellie said. "Did he come with you?"
"Yep, he's right over there," Sarah said, nodding toward the doorway. "Mr. B, meet Ellie." Ellie turned toward the man and dropped the knife in her hand.
"Hello….Ellanor."
It dawned on Sarah at that moment, who Mr. B was. "When you say Mr. B?" Sarah began.
"It's Bartowski," Stephen replied. "Stephen Bartowski." Sarah looked over at Ellie, who was in shock. What had she done?
A/N: Wanted Halloween and that scene, plus I moved the story forward. Mission accomplished.….til next time…hope you enjoyed it! Reviews and PMs are always welcomed!
