Stanley + Mariella ramble
Stanley and Mariella friendship is so real and dear to me even though their only canon “interaction” is Stanley going insane and dying at Mariella’s feet. Stanley isn’t even alive in it, or maybe he’s playing dead because the game resets whenever Stanley dies. Even then, they don’t exchange words to each other and Mariella only refers to him as a “crazy man”. Still, I think they’d bond over their predicament. Like they’re both just regular people trapped in the parable.(The Narrator and Curator have some power over the game since they are able to spawn in assets or stop the game, unlike Stan and Mari who are just powerless(in a sense, Stanley can change things up with his choices after all)).
I think their dynamic would also be interesting in how they’re “controlled”. For Mariella, in the non-bucket version of her ending she believes, or is written in the script to believe, that she is in control of her own life. Her narration is full of hypocrisy as it constantly states that Mariella knows what is real and what is not. We, as the player, obviously know better. She is an asset to the game, appearing in only one ending(technically two with the bucket but like cmon😭😭😭😭😭). Mariella doesn’t know that she is not in control, or maybe she does, making her very own thoughts and feelings something she has no authority over. It is the Narrator who speaks, not Mariella herself. Her mind is a tool for the narrative, and by extension, she too. Stanley, on the other hand, appears to know of his role, and actively strives for control-putting him at odds with the Narrator is some endings. I don’t think I can do Stanley’s character justice since I suck with words, but it really boils down to him being aware and defying the narrative yet still ending up trapped in it. Stanley and Mariella are the closest they have for human interaction, even if there’s a possibility they’re not even human but just sentient creations.
Anyway, love them so much they make my kidney squeeze and ache

Shoutout to Luke Newton for perfectly portraying a man who has lost his goddamn mind. portraying a man that doesn't even know his own argument as he's pleading, having a facial journey that goes from quickly working out a response -> dialling it back -> and somehow working out his new narrative in mere seconds. props to his very PARTICULAR tone, the levels to his voice, specific inflections, as well as the flip-flopping from this faux persona of swagger to shy Mclonely boy. Honestly, truly, it's so good.
