I don't submit many poems for publication, but I am truly delighted that this old piece found a home in a beautiful volume of Prairie Schooner. I wrote this in April 2016, when I was re-emerging from the most deadening period of my life. As much as this poem, on the surface, is about heartbreak, it is much more about the gift of opening myself once again to communion with others and communion with the mystery of our fragile, interconnected world. The person I wrote this for took me by the hand and--with gentleness and understanding--helped me put aside weariness and remember that the world was a place that could still surprise me with a beauty that surpasses explanation, that cannot be neatly explained and shut away. Though it's been years since we have spoken, I am forever grateful for him.
And, as spring quickens in New York City, I am grateful once more to reflect on all I would have missed if I had not made it through the gauntlet of 2015. I would never have met my cat (and love of my life) Willa who wakes me each morning by wildly purring, head butting me like a baby goat, and nibbling my cheeks and nose because sheâs just so happy to see me; hiked on Orcas Island with Michael and found a surprise lake which we named Lake Ineffable (because no name was beautiful enough for it) where we stripped off our clothes and swam and embraced each other, blissfully alone and dazed by superfluous beauty; found out that George Washington National Forest may have more fireflies than anywhere in the world; grown into my vocation as a social worker and been blessed to sit in communion with my clients for eight years; built a beautiful relationship with my parents based on mutual respect, affinity, and humor; seen my friendsâ babies discover the world; slept beneath a meteor shower sky on a NYC beach in the arms of a man I was suddenly and entirely falling in love with; discovered Eric Rohmer; discovered Wim Wenders;Â moved to Laramie, Wyoming where everything looks like the abandoned set of a Western film where the paint has flaked off but he extras are still wandering around despondently; moved to Montana where I remembered that I am part of the whole, not just a body in passing; woke in Missoula to the cold air seeping through my windowâstill half in a dream of Oregon in Octoberâand stirred, deliciously alert beside the boy I loved, craning toward his sleepy, freckled back, to clutch him closer, the brisk quickening of fall making my body a new thingâwild and tender and alive; swam naked in the ocean; had the chance to work with my best friends and fall even more in love with the people they are based off the kindness they showed our clients; had my best friends, in turn, respect and love me more based of what they saw me showing clients; sat by a lake at night and felt an earthquake swell like a heartbeat beneath my body; drove from Missoula to Washington, Ryanâs van weaving through a forest fire zone until we reached the pure, amnesiac sweep of the Pacific; discovered Simone Weil; been, not only forgiven, but embraced by the person I most wronged after six years of estrangement; made up a silly-serious shared mythology with Steven about a vulture God named Hamm who watches over us with a severe equanimity; backpacked through Olympic National Park with Michael and seen and been seen by the strange shaggy haired deer and rabbits who looked at us without fear; discovered Agnes Martin; read poetry with my sage & strange Mara; discovered Olivier Messiaen; discovered Mary Ruefle; discovered Ana Mendieta; realized that I like the color yellow; moved to New York City; discovered Carol Rama; learned how to enjoy dancing to music other than punk rock; seen a moose in the wild; spent a summer in that yellow shotgun house with the overgrown yard and the porch overlooking the river where we made dinner each night listening to recordings of bird calls; experienced the delights of solitary sunbathing on Brooklyn roofs; encountered places named Hellgate, Bitterroot, and Rattlesnake; recited The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock at 3 AM, wading in the waters of the Long Island Sound; realized I am capable of keeping houseplants alive; heard the thrumming ecstasy of the grouse's wings; learned the name of those clustered, mustard-colored flowers that grow on the Oregon coast; grew grateful for beauty again, remembering the world is not a place I can neatly explain, cannot fold in linen and shut in a drawer; and, most of all, remembered the daily ways we concedeâplainly, without theatricsâto live.
Today I am thankful for those who love me and those who allow me to love them.

You Belong With Me
AN: another older one from the drafts that Iâve finally found an ending for.
Y/n moved in with Harry back in 2016, after he discovered he couldnât handle being alone for long periods of time. They had been friends for a little over a year and she was struggling to afford a place on her own in any of the three cities she worked in (NYC, LA, London), so they made arrangements to share his places. Y/n hesitated when he pitched the idea for a few reasons. For starters, he had been seeing Kendall Jenner at the time. She knew they werenât doing anything more than âhaving funâ, Harryâs words, but she still thought it might be weird for him to live with one girl when he was sleeping with a different one. The other reason was that she had been in love with him, so getting more time to be domestic with him was dangerous.
However, not even a year into it she realized she worried too much. They were seldom at the same house for more than a week at a time with each other because they had different and busy schedules. She even asked Harry if it actually helped him and he said just knowing someone else lived there and seeing her stuff soothed him tremendously.
To tell the truth, she never expected them to still be living together years later. She always assumed Harry would eventually get serious with someone and give her an eviction notice. She held her breath every day the year he was with Camille. She kept expecting them to take that step as it was the longest heâd been with someone in the time sheâd known him, but they never did. Camille was sweet and would never admit to it but Y/nâs pretty sure she played a part in their breakup. When she told Harry that Camille might not have been comfortable with him having a roommate he brushed her off saying, âWe were at different points in life. We wanted different things.â She had trouble believing that after Fine Line came out.
When the pandemic hit they finally got to spend more time than ever together under the same roof and Y/n got used to it. She liked watching movies and tv with Harry. She liked cooking with him. They got very experimental in the kitchen. She liked going on hikes and trying at home workouts together. She even liked getting drunk and playing games, especially two person Twister. All of the things they did she liked, but what she loved was the fact that they felt and acted like a couple. One night the illusion had been so strong that they almost kissed! Sheâd be lying if she said she didnât expect them to cross that line but sadly they never did.
When he came home to pack a bag in November, because he had to do a quarantine somewhere else due to someone on set testing positive, she felt the intimacy bubble pop. She could feel it deep within her that things would change from that day forth and they did. Two months later she found out heâd been sleeping with Olivia Wilde since October, which sheâs not even sure how thatâs possible, and they had been dating ever since. She was honestly shocked. She for sure expected this one to fizzle out faster than the rest but it didnât. It kept going. What made her sadder was that they had hardly been in the same city the last two years let alone at the same house. So, she had just been waiting patiently for him to kick her out. He knew she could afford it now. The only thing that bothered her about leaving Harryâs house was the woman lined up to take her place. They werenât right for each other.
Tonight was the first time in months Harry and Y/n had been at the same house. She had come to London to work on a project and he was there on a little break before his European tour started. They were staying at his place in Hampstead. It was her favorite for many reasons but one of those being that it was his first place he ever bought himself and it gave her insight to what he was like before they met. She should have expected to not be the only house guest he had but she was still thrown off guard when he came in, not alone.
The door slammed against the wall and voices bickered in the distance.
âI just donât understand why you were rude to the waitress.â Her Harry spoke.
âShe asked you for a picture. Why does it matter? They make a living wage here.â
Y/n rolled her eyes. She worked as a waitress for a couple years before her entertainment career kicked off and people that were rude to service staff were the worst kind if you ask her.
âGod you donât get it. Itâs about being nice. And it didnât bother me that-â He stopped speaking when his eyes landed on his best friend cooking dinner in the kitchen. The frown that had taken over his face amid the argument turned into a bright smile at the sight before him. âY/n! I totally forgot you said you were going to be here this week.â
He walked over to her and gave her a hug. Over his shoulder she saw his girlfriend shoot her a death glare.
âYeah. I hope Iâm not intruding.â She knew she was.
âNot at all. You live here. How could you be intruding?â
âSeriously?â It was muttered under Oliviaâs breath but she knew they could hear her.
âWhat are you cooking? It smells lovely.â He glanced at the pots his friend had momentarily forgotten and ignored his girlfriend completely.
âMiso ramen with salmon and tofu.â She stirred the broth again and flipped the fish in the pan.
âMy favorite. Too bad I already ate.â He seemed like he wished he hadnât gone out with Olivia at all now. âWell, Iâd hate to disturb your plans. Weâll get off to bed.â
He sauntered towards his pink stairs expecting her to follow him and she did so like a petulant child. Just before they reached the top Y/n heard her say, âWhy is she here? Canât she afford to live alone by now? Sheâs 26.â
Y/n was not offended. In fact, she thought that was rich coming from a 38 year old who was not only dating a 28 year old but acted like she was only 20.
Y/n thought with their retreat the night would be peaceful but shortly after they disappeared their argument got louder.
âIâm not doing this with you again!â Harry screamed.
She could only hear bits and pieces from both of them.
âKick her out,â Olivia said.
âI donât know what else you want from me. Weâve made it this far, isn't that enough proof?â
âHow am I supposed to trust you?â
âMe!? Trust me!? Youâre the one that was with someone else.â She had never heard him this angry.
After that she decided to put on music to tune them out. She had many reasons she didnât like Olivia but the main one was the Harry she brought out. Y/nâs Harry was calm, easygoing, loving and happy but above all drama free. Oliviaâs Harry was dark, angry, haunted and all over the tabloids and internet gossip. It might have had nothing to do with her and everything to do with their compatibility but either way it broke Y/nâs heart to see him this way.
~~~~~~~~~
The next morning she decided to put as little strain on their relationship as possible. She made them both breakfast and after they came down to see her plating the food, she told them to enjoy and made a swift exit. Before her escape she caught some glares and words from Olivia.
âThis wont make me like you or fix our living arrangements.â
Even though she knew Harry would chew her out for it Y/n couldnât help but let it get to her. She thought about the living arrangements comment all day and decided she should talk to Harry that night.
On her walk back to the house she remembered the day he proposed the idea.
âLive with me. Itâd fix both our issues.â He had blurted out randomly amid her rambling about the state of rent prices.
âWonât it get weird? Like if we have partners and stuff?â
âNo. Weâll make it work. Come on, it'll be fun. Like weâre in university, I never got to do that.â He was persistent, she gave him that.
âOkay. But just till I can get on my feet or you find a replacement.â She winked at him and he laughed.
She had been joking about the replacement but now she feared he had taken her seriously.
Stepping off the tube, Y/n decided to take the longer, more scenic route to their house. As she walked she thought about the night they almost kissed.
Harry almost fell over trying to spin the wheel.
âOi! Okay⊠It says right hand on green.â
Y/n had never been this drunk before. She chalked it up to wanting to keep up with Harry but now she regretted it as she was trying to remain in her twister position. Upon hearing his instruction she realized moving her hand to green would put them in quite the compromising position. She did it anyway.
âHey there. Donât get any ideas, love,â he said, peering down at her.
Her face was practically in his crotch.
âDonât worry. Iâm not interested.â She smiled up at him.
âOuch.â He went to spin again but drunkenly lost his balance and fell on her.
âOi! Harry! That hurt.â
They both laughed and when they collected themselves she became aware of how close they were. His hips were perched between her legs and she could feel his breath on her lips.
âYour eyes have a bit of green in them. Iâve never noticed,â he said. He brought a hand up to her face to swipe her hair away from her cheek.
âYeah, theyâre hazel. Itâs like a cross between brown and green.â
He started to lean in and just when she thought they were about to kiss his head fell to her shoulder.
âCan we just sleep here? I donât think I can get up.â
And they did sleep there that night. On the floor, tangled in each other.
She walked through the outside door of their house not even remembering coming out of the park or the rest of the walk. She had been lost in her thoughts. She was relieved that he was home alone.
âHarry?â
He was in the kitchen, at the island reading a book and drinking something out of a mug.
âThereâs my favorite girl!â He turned to face her.
Her heart clenched and fluttered at his words.
âWe need to talk. Is Olivia here?â
âNo, she took the kids to the zoo.â
It made her uncomfortable that he was dating someone with kids because it made her think about him being a father to kids that werenât hers.
âOkay cool.â She took the seat next to him, facing him fully.
Just as she was about to start his phone rang.
âHang on.â He glanced down to see who it was and rolled his eyes. He got up and walked to look out the window as he answered. âWhatâs up, Olivia?â
Y/n wasnât sure what had happened in the time she was gone but she assumed they were still fighting.
âArenât you supposed to be at the zoo with the kids?â
She wished she could hear the other end but she just pretended to be busy.
âHow did you forget itâs not your day?â
A bit of silence.
âNo, Iâm busy.â
More silence.
âWhy are you still on that? It was a fucking joke! Youâve known me long enough that you should know that.â
More silence and then he shook his head.
âIâm not doing this with you right now. Bye.â He hung up and came back to his spot like nothing had happened.
âYou okay?â She asked.
âI just donât know what happened. We had been drama free and then for the last few months sheâs been picking fights. Getting angry at my jokes, at my job and at my relationship with you. Itâs exhausting. I just want one good day.â
She felt horrible for potentially making his day worse but she had to bring it up.
âAbout that⊠I donât think we can do this anymore.â
âDo what?â
âLive together.â She paused to take a deep breath. âWeâre getting too old for it.â
âWhat? Whereâs this coming from?â
âLast night. I felt like I was intruding.â
âDonât be ridiculous. You canât intrude when itâs your house.â
âItâs not my house though, Harry. Itâs yours. You bought it with your own money a decade ago.â
âBut you live here.â
She sighed. She stood up and walked over to turn on the kettle.
âDo you not like living together anymore?â He sounded so hurt.
âHarry, youâre in a serious relationship now. Things are just different.â
âHow are they any different from when I was with Camille? You didnât threaten to move out then.â His voice was getting louder, like he was getting angry.
âNo, but I probably should have. Then you might still be together.â
âThat doesnât make any sense Y/n, Iâm with Olivia now, Iâm over her.â
âI just mean I donât want to cause another breakup.â
âI donât know what to say.â He just stared at her from across the island.
âLook, Harry, I love you and I have thoroughly enjoyed our arrangement but things are a lot more complicated now then they were back then.â
He stayed silent. After a moment he came around the island and stood in front of her. He slowly pulled her into a tight hug.
âOkay. If thatâs how you feel, I wonât try to convince you otherwise, but at least stick it out a little longer yeah? Until you secure another place. Iâll help you look for something and my door will always be open for you.â
They didnât say much else after that. Luckily that night, Olivia stayed somewhere else so Y/n could have a moment to think about everything in peace.
~~~~~~~~
Harry was terrified. Y/n telling him she wanted to leave was the worst thing that had ever happened to him. That conversation between them hurt worse than any breakup heâs ever had. He wasnât really sure why though.
He was also confused. It sounded like she didnât actually want to leave but more like she felt she had to. He also didnât understand why she brought up Camille and why it seemed she wished he was still with her. Did she miss Camille? He knew she and Olivia did not get along but he couldnât recall her and Camille ever interacting much either.
He was hurt. He wanted her to stay. He wanted her, period. He knew heâd fucked up. He always fucked up. The truth is Y/n was the last thing he had left of his time in the band. If he lost her he wouldnât have anything that reminded him of that time in his life. Sure, he could call the boys whenever, but Y/n was someone who liked him before he was successful on his own and that meant something to him. She was genuine. They had never really had a fight before. That night was the first. If you could call it a fight anyway.
He felt ashamed. Over lockdown, they had been so close to becoming what he wanted them to be but he got scared. The night they almost kissed was his favorite memory to date. But the next day, because he was scared, he went and did something stupid.
There was a knock at his trailer door. Even the smallest of sounds sent a pounding through his head. He rushed to open it to make it stop.
âHey, sexy thing, are you ready for your scene?â It was Olivia.
She had started calling him names like that pretty early on. He was bummed at first because this was his first time to have a main part and he was excited to work with professionals only to find out how unprofessional the director truly was. He had gotten used to it though.
âNo. I got too drunk last night.â
âAlone?â
âNo, me and my best mate live together. She used to be a bartender and we were experimenting with new recipes. Sheâs a heavy pourer, that's for sure.â
âYou poor thing.â Olivia had entered the trailer and was now inappropriately close.
âWhat are you doing?â He said, backing up into the wall.
âDonât think about it.â
He knew he should have said no, but he was so tired of pining over Y/n. He had given her so many chances to make a move and she never did. He hadnât thought that this thing with Olivia would turn into what it had. He thought for sure back then it was a one time thing but she kept wanting to do it again and then one day she was claiming she loved him. Then, factoring in that she had ruined her family for him, he felt obligated to be with her. He wasnât happy. So, Y/n was the best thing in his life and she was threatening to leave. He didnât want to force her to stay so he didnât say much when she brought it up but now he wished heâd said more.
The next day he had already felt a shift between them.
He stumbled down to the kitchen to find her there making chocolate chip pancakes.
âYouâre like a proper housewife, you know that?â
She didnât smile at his joke. In fact she hardly looked at him. His heart cracked.
âCome on, Y/n. Donât do this.â
Silence. She put his food on a plate and placed it in front of him. She turned around to make herself a latte with the espresso machine he bought just for her. When she came to sit beside him and still said nothing he snapped.
âThatâs enough!â He had never heard his own voice so loud.
She flinched away from him and he had never wished to die more.
âHey, Iâm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.â He reached for her and she finally looked at him, allowing him to grab her hand.
âY/n I canât do this. I didnât say anything last night because I didnât want to force you to stay but I canât live without you.â
âHarry, Iâd just be moving out.â
He shook his head aggressively.
âYou donât get it. I canât live without you. I donât want you to go, you're all I have.â
âThatâs not true and you know it. If anything itâs the other way around.â
They had both forgotten their food.
âYou are. Itâs been hard not being in the same place at the same time but when we are, it brightens my day. When I came home the other night and you were in the kitchen cooking dinner, it was like a dream. Itâs all I want, for the rest of my life.â
âOkay, but donât you want it with someone you love? You donât need your silly best friend when you have a girlfriend.â
How could someone be so dense?
âNever mind.â
âItâll be okay I promise. In fact, Iâm mainly looking at places in the neighborhood.â
They didnât talk much more about it. He couldnât handle it.
That was in May. It was now November. And he hadnât seen his pretty best friend in so long. She had come to the first two New York shows as she was working on stuff in New York that week, but that had been over two months ago. So much had happened. When she came to those shows it was the first time heâd seen her since the moving out conversation. He wanted to drop to his knees and beg but he was trying not to upset Olivia. Heâs not sure why now because theyâve had so many fights since then. Including a big one in September that led to them breaking up and he hadnât been upset by it either.
He was getting ready to go on stage when there was a knock at the door.
He rushed to open it. There she was, standing in front of him like a dream.
âY/n.â It was no louder than a whisper.
âHey. I know youâre about to go on, but maybe after the show we can talk?â
He nodded so fast he thought his head would fall off.
âOkay. Great. Iâll see you in a few hours.â She turned to leave but he wouldnât have it. He grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her to him.
âThereâs no need to run away. You can hang out until show time.â
He had her in a tight hug.
âI just⊠I need to get a drink and find my seat.â
âSeat? Youâre not gonna stand with Jeff and them?â
âNo. My friend bought tickets before she realized I could get us VIP access.â She laughed like it was a joke but it hurt his feelings. How did she have a friend that didnât know that? He talked about her to all his friends all the time. âPlus, your girlfriend is here and I donât want to cause any issues.â
âOkay. Well, Iâll see you after?â
She nodded and left. He felt empty. It was like he had already lost her. He pushed his feelings down and went on stage pretending to be the happiest man alive.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/n was nervous. She lied about a friend buying tickets. She didnât want him to know it was her choice to be further away. She figured he knew anyway. She had been putting space between them since May. She knew that if she wanted to stay in his life, she needed to get over him and she couldnât do that being around him all the time. So, she was nervous because she was going to tell him she found a place. Not just one though. She found three flats, one for each city. That news wasnât so bad she supposed but she was scared to tell him that they werenât in his neighborhood. She lied before. Y/n couldnât afford to live in North London, Malibu or the upper west side in Manhattan, but she didnât want to hurt him anymore than she had.
When Harry started singing Kiwi she excused herself and made her way to his dressing room. She was surprised no one else was waiting there.
She was sitting on the couch in his dressing room when the door burst open.
âHey stranger.â She smiled at him. He looked terrified and she didnât know why.
âThank god. I thought you left.â He closed the door behind him.
âI said I wanted to talk, didnât I?â
âYeah but I saw you get up and leave and then you werenât outside the door.â He made his way to the couch and sat beside her. âWhat did you want to talk about?â
She sighed. âI donât know how youâll take this.â
He was silent so she continued. âI found a place. Well more than one.â
âOh.â He stood up and went to change.
âI havenât signed anything yet, it's not a done deal.â
âOkay? Why is that important?â He didnât look at her once.
âThey arenât in your neighborhood.â
He turned around at that.
âI thought you said you were only going to look at places in the neighborhood. Do you really not want to be around me that badly?â His face was drenched in hurt.
âNo! Not at all.â She stood up too and made her way over to him. âI just canât afford the same areas you can.â
âThatâs not all it is and you know it.â The hurt was now mixed with anger.
âWhat?â
âDonât play dumb. Youâve been keeping your distance. Weâve hardly seen each other or spoken since May.â
âWeâre busy people, H.â
âThat's bullshit and you know it. I always make time for you.â
He pulled on his sweats and walked to the vanity.
âI donât understand why youâre mad.â She followed right behind him.
âBecause my best friend doesnât like me anymore.â He whipped around to face her as he spoke. âIâm not mad either. Iâm fucking depressed.â She thought she saw the shimmer of tears forming in his eyes.
âHey.â She cautiously reached for his hands and held them in hers. âI love you. Itâs just been hard to be around you lately.â
âWhy? What did I do?â He held her hands tighter.
âYou did nothing. Itâs all me.â She looked at their hands. She couldnât look at him as she came clean. âIâm in love with you and having to watch you be with someone else, itâs gotten to be too much. I have to move out because if we keep living together, Iâm going to start to believe you love me too. Donât you want to live with someone you love? Donât you want to come home to the person you love most cooking for you after a late night and cuddle them to sleep?â
She looked back up to see him smiling.
âI do want that.â
âSee. And you could have that with Olivia, I just need to not be in the way.â She started to step back but he held her tighter.
âI donât want it with Olivia.â
âWhat?â
âI donât love her. Not the way you are insinuating.â
âThen why are you with her?â
He took a deep breath.
âBecause I couldnât be with you.â
Her mouth fell open.
âWhat?â It was barely louder than a whisper.
âThat night we got drunk, do you remember?â She nodded so he continued. âWell, I almost kissed you but I knew it would ruin everything so I didnât. Then the next day, on set, Olivia made a move and I donât know, I was tired of being alone.â He couldnât look at her, he was ashamed of himself.
âAre you serious?â She sounded angry so he looked up to see her face and it was indeed set in a frown. He let her continue. âHarry, you have to be the dumbest person Iâve ever met.â
She put distance between them and he missed her the minute she let go of his hands.
âYou have never been alone! I donât know why you canât understand that. Being single and being alone are not the same thing. You have always had me. We fucking live together.â
âYou donât get it, Y/n. Itâs so hard being around someone you are madly in love with and canât have.â
She looked at him stunned.
âI donât get it?â She shook her head. âHarry, Iâm not the one who brings other people around! In the time weâve known each other, how many guys have I dated, do you know?â He couldnât recall so he shook his head. âNone! Because I have only had eyes for you.â
His heart jumped, he didnât get time to bask in her words because she continued.
âIâve had sex and been on dates but only at the extreme difficulty of having to pretend they were you. Meanwhile you have come around with at least four different women and practically rubbed it in my face that you didnât want me. And now youâre just here telling me you donât even want to be with the woman youâve been with for two years. The one that I have to see treat you like shit. The one Iâve watched break you down into this shell of a man all because you didnât want to be alone.â She started to cry. âAnd for what? Because I told you I should move out because seeing you with someone else kills me inside and living with you is all I want but it confuses the hell out of me because we arenât together.â
âHey, Angel, donât cry.â He walked over to her, feeling the need to be delicate since she was mad. âIâm so sorry. I genuinely had no idea you felt that way. I wish I had known sooner.â He gently raised his hands to her cheeks and when she didnât pull away, he began stroking her tears away with his thumbs.
âWhy canât you just call it what it is, H? You are scared of something real. Something that has the potential to be the end of the road.â
He leaned his forehead against hers and started to talk in a soft voice. âYouâre right. I am scared. Because like I said I canât live without you and Iâve been doing everything in my power to keep you but clearly Iâve made some mistakes. I just⊠I love you so much and so intensely it scares me and I donât know it just felt like you didnât feel the same so Iâve tried to move on but keep you close at the same time. It backfired clearly.â He chuckled a bit.
His words made her peer back up at him with a smile. It was the first time he actually said the words. The first time she heard them.
âYeah it did. Look how much time weâve wasted.â
His heart skipped. Did that mean?
âTime weâve wasted? You arenât mad?â
âI am but just because we could have done this sooner.â
Before he could say anything she pulled him into a heated kiss.
He pulled back after a minute. âDoes this mean youâre not going to move out?â
âIt means Iâm going to move out of my room and into yours.â
He smiled and kissed her again. He pulled her flush against him and spun them around to push her against the vanity counter. Just as he was about to lift her onto it she pulled back.
âWait⊠you have a girlfriend.â
âNo I donât.â
âWhat?â
He placed her on the counter and came to stand between her legs.
âWe broke up. Like a week ago.â
Instead of responding, Y/n moaned and pulled his lips back to hers. She wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled him as tight to her as she could.
She came up for air and said, âGood. You belong with me.â
He hummed his agreement of, âI belong with you,â and dove right back in.
His tongue slipped between her lips ever so lightly. It just gently brushed hers and caused her to buck her hips against his.
Her hands snaked into his hair and pulled gently. She had been waiting to be with him like this for so long that she was going to take advantage of it. She lowered her hands to his shoulders, brushing his neck as they passed it, and pulled him even closer.
Harry was hard. He knew if they kept going he wouldnât be able to stop so he pulled back.
âBaby, if we donât cool down, Iâm gonna have to fuck you right here.â
âGod,â she groaned. âPlease do.â
âYou want to? Right here? You donât want it to be more special?â
She cooed at him. âYouâre so cute, my love. But Iâve wanted to do this since I was nineteen. I can have it be special later.â
âOkay then.â He dove back in finding a place on her neck to attach his lips to. She threw her head back and arched her back giving him more access.
While he sucked on her neck he started undoing the buttons on her top. Once he popped the last one, he made his way down to her chest. His lips traced a path with his tongue coming out every so often to lick at her skin.
When he reached his destination he reached around to undo her bra. When it slid off her body he let out a single âfuckâ before he dove onto the left one, kissing and sucking vigorously.
âFuck, Harry.â She put her hands back on his head and pushed him into her chest even more.
He moved to the right one whispering, âfucking perfectâ before mimicking his movements from before. Y/n was going crazy above him and it was everything he had ever dreamed of.
âHarry.â She pulled his head up as she spoke.
âWhat?â
âTake your clothes off right now.â
Without another word he stood up straight and yanked his sweats off. He came back between her legs and carefully pulled her leggings down, stopping to kiss her legs every so often. When they were both naked, he came back to stand in his original position. He felt her reach down and grab him, to guide him to her entrance but he stopped her.
âProtection?â It was all he could say.
âThe pill.â She matched his energy perfectly and that was why he loved her so much.
He pushed in and it was everything they both could have dreamed of.
âYou feel perfect,â he whispered against her ear and then gave it a little nibble.
âYou too.â She wrapped her legs all the way around him to hold him as close as possible.
His thrusts were slow and tender, as if still trying to make their first time special but it was perfect. She could feel every detail and the dragged out pace allowed for her climax to build slower and eventually release in one of the strongest orgasms sheâd ever had.
She could tell Harry was close. She ran her hands through his hair again and whispered, âLet go, baby, let go.â And biting into her shoulder he did just that, as if heâd just been waiting for permission.
They stayed still, just breathing heavily, for a moment and then she felt her shoulder dampen.
âWhatâs wrong, Honey?â She softly combed his hair with her fingers, scratching at his scalp every so often.
âI just⊠I donâtâŠâ He paused to take a deep breath, then leaned back so he could look in her eyes. âI donât deserve you. As a partner or friend. Iâve been so shitty and oblivious and ignorant and an ass-â
âHey, hey, hey,â she cut him off. âYou are an amazing friend to me. You gave me a place to live for the last six years and youâve given me opportunities to come see the best live shows Iâve ever seen.â He smiled at that and she kissed him lightly before continuing. âAnd if you feel for me how I feel for you, I bet you will be a phenomenal partner. Have you made some mistakes, including ones that hurt my feelings? Yes. But thatâs over now. Itâs just you and me against the world.â She brushed her thumb over his lips and they puckered to kiss it. âYouâre stuck with me now though. You canât get rid of me if you tried, so I hope thatâs okay with you.â She giggled and he did too.
âItâs everything Iâve ever wanted. I promise Iâll never hurt your feelings like that again. You are the most important thing in my life and Iâll do whatever it takes to keep you.â
She kissed him on the mouth. âGood.â She kissed him again. âNow I donât know about you rockstar, but Iâm starving.â He let out a loud laugh, and she realized they were still connected and winced a bit. âHow about we get dressed and go get pancakes or something?â
âPancakes sound great.â A mischievous smile took over his face as he untangled them and helped her off the vanity. âBut how about we go home and make your pancakes,â He paused, the smile dropping for dramatic effect as he added, ânaked?â
She cackled. She didnât answer right away. She just put her clothes on (well she put on the t-shirt Harry had never managed to fully change into and her leggings) and he did the same. Then finally she turned to face him.
âAlright. Letâs go home.â
âAnd round two after pancakes?â
âIs this gonna be my life now?â She giggled. âCooking and fucking on an endless loop?â
âI sure hope so.â He smiled sheepishly.
She leaned up to kiss him again.
âMe too! Now letâs go!â She grabbed his hand and led them out of the room.
hi blog it's friday! in an ideal world I would be in the midst of a 4 day weekend. too bad for me, my client decided a holiday weekend was a great place to put their big deadline and so instead I am potentially working this weekend. yuck.
anyway on a happier note, things are busy busy this summer. I went for my big yearly appalachian trail hike with my friends last week. 50 miles in 5 days, and this time I did NOT injure myself! yay! I did, however, not position my rain fly correctly one night, and sadly discovered this fact at 1am when it started pouring and dripping water onto my hammock. blog, let me tell you, feeling around for a poncho in the dead of night and repositioning all the ground stakes of a rain tarp while not having a headlamp and needing to juggle a cell phone in one hand to use the flashlight app is NOT FUN. and then I spent the rest of the night worrying I didn't do a good job. it was not my most fun hiking night, I admit.
(I made up for it several days later when I slept with just my sleeping mat and bag under the stars. it was beautiful)
it was a very fun trip but I'm glad to be back and chilling and having some much needed alone time. next week is another business trip to toronto and them maybe west coast long weekend to visit family and then a beach weekend with more family. (I already had my once-a-year pina colada but I might make an exception and have another!)
I just got back from a lunchtime gym class and I feel great. I'm going to try to do zero more work today because I am still resentful about my nonexistent long weekend lol.
this weekend is more spirealm show and maybe I'll finally download the link click live action show for bestest boy jiang long. and I continue on my goal to try at least one new nyc restaurant per week! I have a few contenders for this weekend, we'll see how it goes.
I hope everyone has a good weekend!
2022 was a big year. After a very very very long span of time where depression meant I only had the attention span for works starring established familiar characters and universes, I finally was able to return to reading entirely original fiction this year. This really started last year after my cat died, when I discovered that romance novels were the ideal way to distract myself and get through my pain - which is why there are so many of them in the mix this year. Iâm firmly a fan of the genre now.
I donât normally list what I read in a single year, but I am so excited that by mid year last year I was in a good enough place in my recovery journey that I could hop into brand new worlds and meet new complex characters all over again.
So here are the Fiction Books I read in 2022 in no particular order. I am sure I forgot a bunch? IDK. I wrote a few short thoughts about each next to them. Please feel free to ask if you are interested in more detailed thoughts on any of them. Iâm planning to write more about the ones I listened to as audiobooks while hiking over on my hiking blog later!:
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (fantasy) - This was without question the best fantasy novel I read all year
The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson (science fiction) - This was the best science fiction novel I read all year. I REALLY REALLY REALLY loved this book.
The Luminous Dead (horror/science fiction) - This was the best horror novel I read all year
Read Between the Lines by Rachel Lacey (romance) - Youâve Got Mail lesbian edition. The author sure loves New York City, but in a way where it really felt strange as a New Yorker reading it?
No Rings Attached by Rachel Lacey (romance) - Serviceable. Fake Dating, Only One Bed, roadtrip where you know the obvious conclusion before you get there because the wrong assumption the character made was so super obvious. There is a moment in this book I am still very annoyed by in a âthis doesnât read as true for a queer person who lives in NYCâ type way
The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Oliva Waite (historical romance) - This was a really good historical romance. Waite clearly cares a lot about the historical period she writes about and does a great job of establishing her leads as full people with strong interests and lives outside of their relationship.
The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows by Oliva Waite (historical romance) - The difference between the cover and the actual book for this one is WILD. The cover looks horrible, but the actual book is great. An older and now widowed side character from Celestial Mechanics gets it on with a chubby beekeeper lady around her age. Lots of exploration of the politics of that time. Really loved this one.
A Little Light Mischief by Cat Sebastian (historical romance) - I am not going to lie, I donât remember too too much about this one, but I remember really liking it?
The Seep by Chana Porter (science fiction) - Really interesting exploration of an alien invasion where everything about what it means to be human suddenly changes, from the perspective of a woman who had fought to be her true self before the invasion and finds herself unable to keep adjusting to the shifts in everything the more and more everything changes.
Payback's a Witch by Lana Harper (paranormal romance) - two witches team up to get revenge on their mutual ex boyfriend and surprise surprise they fall in love with each other in the process. It was a good enough book that I seriously considered reading the next book in the series even though it was a het romance and I donât do those.Â
Faux Pas by Lily Seabrooke (romance) - It took me a bit to get into this one, but once I did I was here for it! Basically a very gentrification focused property developer inherits a beloved restaurant in a small town sheâs never heard of, which turns out to be almost exclusively populated by queer people. Everyone in town knows what she does for a living, so they are set on running her out of town and making her miserable, except for this hot mean butch who lives in the woods and seems to hate the whole town. She used to be a chef in the restaurant and promised the former owner sheâd make sure it stayed in his family, so she is set on convincing our protagonist to move to the town and take over the restaurant rather than sell it. She has a tortured past which is the key to why she is a prickly asshole to everyone, there are many scenes of her sexily teaching the protag how to cook, and to top it all off there is a fake dating aspect to it all.Â
Love & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly (romance) - Itâs a new season of Masterchef errrr a totally original reality TV show that isnât Masterchef, really, and the show is featuring reality cooking TVâs first ever nonbinary contestant. To hype up drama and ratings the producers made sure one of the other contestants is a TERF, so things really are not going great. However what the producers did not plan for was for another contestant - a recent divorcee - to fall head over heels for her fellow contestant (the NB one, not the TERF, obs). The main thrust of the book is them flirting during various challenges and being absurdly cute together. NGL reading this over the summer and then seeing a cooking show during the fall with a NB contestant really made this book feel extra strange. Obviously The Big Brunch was nothing like Masterchef with regards to drama and how the whole reality TV aspect of things is handled, but it was wild reading about how torturous being on TV would HAVE to be for a NB person in the book and then seeing in reality a person being treated with nothing but dignity and respect.
D'Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding by Chencia C. Higgins (romance) - LOVED LOVED LOVED this book, oh WOW. It made me cry!!!!! So so so so so good. The plot is a reality TV dating show decides to do a season focused exclusively on queer relationships. The premise of the show is two total strangers have to convince their entire family that they are getting married in a super short period of time, involve their family in the wedding planning, and if they can make it to the wedding alter without anyone figuring out that itâs fake they get the choice of either taking a massive cash prize or actually going through with the wedding. The book follows two contestants - DâVaughn and Kris. Kris is a budding influencer who wants to be on reality TV for the massive boost in followers it would give her, and DâVaughn is not out to her family and wants to do the show because she wants cameras trained on them when she finally tells them that sheâs gay. I love both of them so fucking much it isnât funny.
The Romance Recipe by Ruby Barrett (romance) - A restaurant owner fell in love with her head chef before she hired her, back when she was a reality TV contestant on a cooking show. Problem is the chef is straight, and the owner doesnât want to make their work relationship weird so sheâs doing her best to get over her crush and move on, but itâs hard. The chef on the other hand has just figured out she is bi and is struggling with how to let the world know since there is an opportunity to do a new cooking show AND she is kinda sorta crushing on her boss and that doesnât feel very professional - especially since she very publicly used to be engaged to the producer of the reality TV show she was on and doesnât want to have a rep for dating her bosses all the time.
Her Majestyâs Royal Coven by Juno Dawson (fantasy) - One of the two series I read this year about a fifteen year old trans girl with new powers, powers she uses to alter her appearance to look how she ideally desires (in this book that happens at the end, in the other it happens at the start of the book). She is not the first trans person in that universe to have powers but she is the most powerful powered person in that world so everyone has to pay attention to her and treats her like she is the first. One member of the powered community becomes her mentor who she moves in with, and the mentor takes on the role of being her mom. That mentor has her body stolen by a biofamily member (in the other series the mentor character got better! In this particular bookâs case it was how the book ended, and the next book in the series isnât out yet so I guess we will see when the next book comes out?) while another member of the powered community - who leads the big government sanctioned powered person org our protag is supposed to be part of - is a TERF (and other members of the powered community explicitly call her a TERF) who becomes obsessed with the teen and gatekeeps so hard the TERF villain destroys her life and reputation and loses everything. (I LOVE both of these series)
Dreadnought by April Daniels (superhero) - This is the second series to follow the pattern described above. In Juno Dawsonâs series it is witches in England, in April Danielâs series it is superheroes in America. Very interesting exploration of coming out. Danny knew she was a girl before the book started, but she had not told anyone yet. The book starts with her gaining superpowers, and with them her appearance changes to match her most idealized self image. So suddenly this 15 year old girl has to explain to everyone she knows how and why she well... looks like herself, while trying to do the whole secret identity thing. Also she is the most powerful superhero in the world, so her abusive dad can no longer physically harm her, but alas her parents are the worst and find all sorts of ways to still terrorize her.
Sovereign by April Daniels (superhero) - Love that Danny is allowed to be messy and not just a perfect unproblematic figure. One thing I am super interested in when the second book in Dawsonâs series comes out is if it, like this one, will have a plot where the cis girl our protag was friends with in the first book becomes her girlfriend in the second book. Based on certain comments in the first one I think it will.
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (science fiction) - NGL I mainly read this series so I could understand all the memes on my dash.
Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (science fiction)
Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (science fiction)
Wilder Girls by Rory Power (horror) - SUCH A GOOD HORROR NOVEL OMG. I really loved this one, the writing style especially.
The Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood (science fiction) - It took me a bit to get into this series. As in I only TRULY got into it during the sequel? I think part of the problem for me was how the book often danced over really interesting things I wanted explored more - such as the protagonistâs teen years as a mercenary, which are kind of mentioned in passing even as they are happening and then cited constantly after as the reason she is so kick ass with swords
The Thousand Eyes by A.K. Larkwood (science fiction) - I really enjoyed this book, and it really made up for my struggle with the first book. It was the payoff that justified all the build up for me, and was just a fun ride overall.
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine (science fiction) - This is may be the most interesting examination of empire I read in 2022 (that may is because I am in the middle of Baru Cormorant and who knows how I will feel by the end of that series) I love this book. It is kind of wild to try to summarize. I remember reccing it to my dad this fall and simply saying âthere is a space station where they implant the memories of dead people into people in their 20s as part of how they ensure important maintenance work is done right with a tiny population. There is this massive space empire that wants to devour them, and they really do not want that - even though that empire has been going HARD at absorbing them through cultural means. The station is losing a significant chunk of its population to people immigrating to the empire because the books and plays and poetry they keep sending to the station is all so damn cool, and this is a major crisis on the station. The ambassador to the empire - tasked with making sure the empire does not take them over - just died. He hasnât been home for 15 years, so his last recorded mental imprint is super out of date. Itâs uploaded to a 21 year old who wanted to be poet, and she is sent to the capitol of the empire as the new ambassador, where everything promptly goes very very very wrong.â What gets me is that description is basically just chapter one, and also that it convinced him to read it. ANYWAY this book is wild and fun and amazing all around
A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine (science fiction) - HOLY WOW did this just keep getting better. Also wow but the whole concept of the two characters who had endless UST in the first book finally doing it with a running commentary from the bitchy dead bi guy in our protagâs head was SO MUCH as was the endless panic about if he was present in her technique or if it was just her in bed. Oh and of course it has one of the damn coolest alien species Iâve encountered in ages. I loved how alien they are and how that alienness tied so perfectly into all of the themes of the book????
The Stars are Legion by Kameron Hurley (science fiction) - It feels like the author of this book set out to make everyone and everything in this world as unlikeable as possible?
Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldtree (fantasy) - You know the way that a drink from Dunkinâ Donuts is perfectly fine? Yeah, this was that. Like there is nothing wrong with it and it got the job done? This is going to be the first one I review on my hiking blog so even if I wind up being unable to follow through with all the others on this list I did while hiking, youâll most likely see more about it there.
Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki (science fiction fantasy) - Exact same analogy but about the donuts at Dunkinâ this time. I really do get what the author was going for, and was very emotionally moved by this book - I cried during the end of it - but it left so many questions unanswered and really did not seem to want to explore any kind of worldbuilding? The aliens were running from a war because parallel to refugees on Earth. The music instructor had a deal with the devil because that is a classic music thing. Neither of these concepts really got explored, and I kept waiting all book for them to be properly fleshed out.
The Drowning Girl by Caitlin R. Kiernan (horror) - Worst book I read all year. Literally just ~mental illness is scary~
Saltblood by T.C. Parker (horror) - THE HORROR OF SURVEILLANCE CULTURE, YES
The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders (science fiction) - SUCH GOOD WORLDBUILDING OMG. Also ngl LOOOOOVED that we have this weird scifi book about humans trying to survive on a super alien planet and how that impacted their cultures and society and religions on that planetâŠ. AND THERE ARE STILL JEWS THERE. Like it was amazing and wild how everything is so different, and one of the supporting characters is literally Jewish.
Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire) (horror) - I had been holding onto this book and hoping to read it since before the depression got so bad I could not read stuff outside of fandom related content. Was super happy to finally get through it, as always McGuire is a master of horror, love everything Iâve ever read that sheâs put out under the Mira Grant pen name.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (science fiction) - Probably the weakest of the books in this series for me, which isnât really knocking it too too much. I really enjoy the worldbuilding of this series, it is such a detailed fleshed out universe, which is so much fun to get lost in.
A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers (science fiction) - AHHHH I loved this book, I loved both of the stories being told and how they related to each other, it was so much fun. A young human clone slave taking agency over her life with the help of an AI system, growing up to help a different AI system in a humanoid chassis figure out how to exist in human form? Yes please!
Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers (science fiction) - I swear with this series there really was - for me - a feeling of each book being better than the last. I particularly loved the whole idea of an alien anthropologist coming to document life on the Human colony ships.
The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers (science fiction) - My favorite of the series, probably because it is the only one absent of human characters, just alien species and cultures and exploration of the interplay between them.
Sailing With Her Wolf by Ariel Marie (paranormal romance) - I bought this book and the following by the same author together, because I wanted to see what paranormal f/f romance offerings were like, her name was the first to come up in my search and I was not sure if I would like a werewolf novel or a vampire one more. Sadly I discovered this author is not for me personally as her books tend to mostly be sex scenes with very little build up or character work between them.
Deadly Kiss by Ariel Marie (paranormal romance) - I had already bought it so I figured why not give it a try even though I didnât like the authorâs other book I got. Besides, that one was slim and this one was longer, so I went in hoping it would have more substance than the other did. I was wrong and am full of regret.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson (fantasy) - In many ways this is my current read, so my thoughts are not yet really formed since I am in the middle of this series. The basic through line is a horrible eugenicist empire is taking over the world. Baru was a child when they came to her home, and after she does exceptionally well on their standardized test which determines your life placement she finds herself put in a position of power. What the empire does not know is that she plans to do everything she can to gain enough power within the empire to destroy it and set her home free. But to get that power she first has to do horrible horrible things.
The Monster Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson (fantasy) - I finished this book on December 31st, and am currently reading the third book in the series (The Tyrant Baru Cormorant).
Ripper Runs along Australiaâs City Waterfronts
Jan 30 â Feb 10, 2023
On my way to New Zealand for some trail racing with Race2Adventure I thought Iâd stop off en route in Oz for a couple of weeks. It was a chance to explore some of the Australian cities Iâd missed in 2016. Not a running vacation as such but thatâs always a great way to explore and feel grounded in a new city, especially when jogging alongside likeminded locals.
Brisbane
Brisbane was an obvious choice since it was my first port of entry into Australia after my flight from New York, plus I hoped to catch-up with my cousin whom Iâd not seen since my previous trip to Australia in 2016. In the event she was unable to meet up since she was working nights in her job as a maternity nurse.
My hotel, the Royal in the Park, was in a great, secluded spot on the edge of the botanical garden, university, and Brisbane River -- perfect for accessing the riverside footpaths, Bunya Walk, City Reach Boardwalk and Bicentennial Bikeway, which I gladly did for my five mile morning runs followed by bonzer brekkies at the River Bar and Kitchen. A buzzing city with lots of modern high rise development along the riverâs north shore, the Goodwill Pedestrian Bridge made for easy access to the south shore and a completely different, low-rise chilled vibe for running along the Clem Jones Promenade. I was surprised how quickly I acclimated from NYCâs freezing winter temperatures, the slight breeze from the river seemingly taking the edge off Sunshine Coasts heat and humidity â being able to acclimate to extremes of hot and cold is something Iâve developed since living in NYC after moving from the more temperate climes of the UK.
At the numerous Irish bars I continued my search for the elusive and iconic âpie floaterâ, an upside down meat pie submerged in the mushiest of peas. Iâd been hooked since my first taster in a small Manhattan Australian cafĂ© and had started my search for the real thing on home turf during my 2016 Australia trip. But alas, I live in hope as the dish still continued to evade me.
Cairns
Iâd initially hoped to fly my mate Topul over from Papua New Guinea for a quick catch-up since Cairns is very close, but Iâd had trouble contacting him â I was worried that his email and social media accounts might have been hacked, so was never sure it was him I was conversing with.
I arrived in the wet low-season so it seemed very quiet in the high humidity which it seemed you could cut with a knife. But lunch and cocktails were beckoning so I quickly discovered Ochre alongside the marina â run by well-known chef Craig Squire, it was hands down the best restaurant of my whole Australia trip! Over the next few days I would visit this place many times, sampling the excellent quinoa salad, tenderloin steak and frozen cocktails amongst other things.
I discovered Cairns Esplanade, an excellent path along the seafront, full of joggers, for my five mile morning runs with brekky afterwards at Muddyâs overlooking the ocean. The regular downpours provided a welcome respite from the heat and humidity.
Near the start of the 4.4 mile hike up Lumley Hill and Mount Whitfield from the botanical gardens (red and blue arrow circuit) I had an enlightening conversation with a guy coming the other way. He informed me that this was the âsingles trailâ where chance encounters were rife, claiming that heâd once caught a couple in a delicate position on the summit. And he seemed to be on a mission for more voyeurism. I was skeptical but felt duty bound to keep my eyes open for the rest of the hike, just in case. Suffice to say the only brief encounter I had on the summit was with a beautiful, iridescent butterfly, seemingly intent on making my acquaintance. During my travels through the woods I do seem to have garnered a connection to the butterfly spirit and was grateful for its presence, surmising it was an angel sent in disguise.
I booked a boat trip to the un-spoilt Fitzroy Island, hoping to get some snorkeling in on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Encased in a giant condom-like black lycra suit on Nudey Beach (not actually a ânudeyâ beach) to protect me from any stingers (jellyfish) rather than any transmittable disease, I headed for the water, only to find my snorkeling cut short by a leaky snorkel. Luckily there was a bar close by where I could extricate myself from the lycra capsule and chug a couple of excellent thirst quenching IPAâs.
Perth
Iâd never been to the remote west coast so this was a must, but it was an inauspicious start as the day before I arrived a teenager was killed by a bull shark in the Swan River.
Although still hot, I was grateful for the west coastâs low humidity during my five mile morning runs alongside the Swan River. Together with the extra incentive to get back to my hotel, The Alex, for the amazing buffet brekky including marmite/vegemite and cheese puff pastry swirls, it was a perfect recipe (excuse the pun) for speeding me up â as with the pie floater, only the Australians could be so bold as to put these things on the menu!
Always up for sampling the local plonk, I booked the Swan Valley Wineries Tour with dâVine Tours. With about 15 of us on a small bus and an entertaining driver, we visited three wineries (with lunch at one), a brewery and a chocolate factory. By the end of it we were all fair dinkum sozzled and singing along to the drivers play list.
On Cottesloe Beach the shark nets looked robust, but I only dared dip my feet in after that shark attack, and laying on the beach while reading was limited without an umbrella. It wasnât all bad since Iâd recently discovered âbeach strollingâ where I could stretch my legs, take in the views and ponder the meaning of life, all while attempting to translate the mysterious language of the crashing wave, a language which has so far eluded me.
I strolled through miles of sandy trails that run through Perthâs beautiful botanical gardens. With its dry, Mediterranean type summer climate, the trees are typical of a dry forest region with many eucalyptus and pines amongst others, and inhabited by noisy flocks of large Carnabyâs black cockatooâs which seemed to have fun bombarding me with squawks and pinecones.
A quick train trip to Freemantle, Perthâs old town which became the primary destination for transported convicts from 1850, was a worthwhile detour. As I strolled alongside quaint Victorian style architecture in the scorching sun, with their resplendent verandas, I couldnât help noticing how many had been taken over by public houses â and after a quick visit to one of them to quench my thirst, I pondered the age old mystery of why such a beer drinking nation sells so many tasteless brews.
Besides fanfiction, what hobbies do you have?
Oh, so many!
I love cooking, especially baking. I try to try out new recipes at least a few times a month. I also really love hosting, so I do dinner parties for friends and people I want to become friends.
I crochet a bit. I'm not amazing at it, but I made a baby blanket for my sister that I'm really proud of. I'm thinking about attempting a shirt, but we'll see! My mom wants to give me her sewing machine and I would like to start making more of my own clothes.
I live in NYC, so I love trying out new bars and restaurants, and a couple times a year, I'll treat myself to a Broadway show (I am currently obsessed with Hadestown). Sometimes I'll go alone, but I prefer going with friends. We also have a group that goes to the movies. It's been a while for that one, tho.
Just recently I took up pole dancing. It's a lot of fun and it's a whole body workout. I never thought pole dancing looked easy, but I have a whole newfound level of respect for pros. I'm pretty sure their entire bodies are made of some sort of flexible steel.
Outside of fanfic, I love reading and writing. I'm a big fan of writers like Octavia Butler, Issac Asimov and Meg Cabot. I like discovering new writers, too. I also write original stuff. I'm working on a short story that I'm hoping to submit to a horror podcast like No Sleep or Nightlight. One day I'd like to write a novel and see if I can get it published.
I like to do urban hiking, which is essentially just taking really ridiculously long walks around the city. I like regular hiking, too, but I don't get out there as often as I'd like.
There are other hobbies I have, but these are my main ones.
Name: Isla Alvarez
Age & Birthday: 30 years old, December 22nd
Gender/Pronouns: Cis Woman She/Her
Species: Shapeshifter - Cat
Birthplace: Beverly Hills, CA
Job/role: Actress
Positive Personality Traits: focused, empathetic, driven
Negative Personality Traits: stubborn, secretive, fickle
ABOUT
Isla was born and raised in California, immediately tied to the entertainment industry due to her mother and father both being actors. Miguel Alvarez was known for his work within Quentin Tarantino films and Beatriz loved working in rom-coms, action and dramas.
She began acting when she was young but then took a break from the industry, only to return again.
She has always been a private person, rarely documenting her life on social media apart from inconspicuous posts of her travels or events etc
She met Elliot Cross in Atlanta, and after three days spent together, Isla returned home to California and later discovered she was pregnant. Her parents were disapproving, along with plenty of internet speculation when she began showing.
Regardles, becoming a mother is the best thing that ever happened to Isla. Camille was born in 2019 and she focused on raising her instead of working.
The few times Isla tried to reach out to Elliot, she met dead ends and when she did finally find a way to contact him, he was in jail. After that, it cemented Isla's mindset of being a single parent.
In the September of 2023, Miguel and Beatriz were killed. It was said they were attacked by an animal while hiking but Isla and her sister know better, that the signs point to a werewolf attack.
In the November, the Alvarez sisters moved to NYC to be closer to the estranged side of their father's family who are also involved within the entertainment industry.
Isla isn't sure if she plans on returning to acting, especially as she grapples with the loss of her parents. Her primary concern now is rebuilding a sense of normalcy, especially for her sister.
Connecting Hearts and Minds: Jewish Singles Events in NYC Today
New York City, the city that never sleeps, is a bustling hub of diversity, culture, and opportunity. It's also home to a vibrant Jewish community. For Jewish singles in the Big Apple, there's a plethora of events and gatherings that offer the chance to connect, socialize, and potentially find that special someone. In this article, we'll explore the world of Jewish singles events in NYC today, from mixers and speed dating to cultural gatherings and more.
Why Jewish Singles Events Matter
For Jewish singles in NYC, finding a meaningful and lasting connection can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. That's where Jewish singles events come into play. These events offer a relaxed and enjoyable way to meet new people who share your cultural and religious background. Here's why they matter:
Shared Values: Jewish singles events often revolve around shared values and traditions, making it easier to find someone who understands your background and beliefs.
Networking Opportunities: These events provide a unique opportunity to expand your social network and meet a diverse range of people from different walks of life.
Low-Pressure Environment: Unlike the pressure of online dating, singles events offer a relaxed and casual atmosphere. There's no need for witty one-liners or perfectly curated profiles.
Local Connections: Many events focus on NYC, allowing you to connect with potential partners who live in your area.
Types of Jewish Singles Events in NYC
There is a wide variety of events catering to Jewish singles in NYC today. Here are some popular options:
Mixers and Social Gatherings: These events are all about mingling and getting to know new people. They can take place in bars, restaurants, or community centers and often include ice-breakers and games to help break the ice.
Speed Dating: If you're looking to meet a lot of people in a short amount of time, speed dating events are a fun option. You have a few minutes to chat with each person before moving on to the next.
Cultural Events: NYC offers a rich tapestry of Jewish cultural events, from film screenings to art exhibitions. Attending these events can provide a meaningful backdrop for connecting with someone who shares your interests.
Shabbat Dinners: These dinners often take place in private homes or community centers. They offer an opportunity to share a meal, light the Shabbat candles, and connect on a deeper level.
Outdoor Activities: From hiking to picnics in Central Park, outdoor activities provide a relaxed and informal setting for getting to know someone.
Holiday Celebrations: Jewish holidays like Hanukkah, Purim, and Passover often have special singles events where you can celebrate together and connect over shared traditions.
Navigating Jewish Singles Events
If you're considering attending a Jewish singles event in NYC, here are some tips to make the most of your experience:
Be Open-Minded: Keep an open mind and remember that not every event will lead to love at first sight. Enjoy the process of meeting new people.
Dress Comfortably: Wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. You want to be yourself and enjoy the event without worrying about your outfit.
Prepare Conversation Starters: Think of a few interesting conversation starters or questions you can use to break the ice and get to know people.
Respect Boundaries: Be respectful of others' boundaries and comfort levels. Not everyone may be looking for a romantic connection, and that's okay.
Follow Up: If you meet someone you're interested in, don't hesitate to follow up afterward. It's a great way to take the next step and get to know each other better.
Online Resources
In today's digital age, many Jewish singles events in NYC are promoted and organized online. Websites and social media groups can be valuable resources for finding out about upcoming events. Popular platforms for discovering events include Meetup, Eventbrite, and Facebook groups focused on Jewish singles in the city.
Finding Long-Lasting Love
While many people attend Jewish singles events with the goal of finding a life partner, it's essential to remember that these gatherings are about much more than just romance. They're opportunities to make friends, form connections, and engage in a rich cultural and religious community.
If you do find someone special at a Jewish singles event, it can be the start of a beautiful journey. Shared values and traditions provide a solid foundation for a lasting relationship. However, even if you don't find a romantic partner right away, you may find friends, connections, and a sense of belonging in the vibrant NYC Jewish singles community.
