i love how ava’s being very anti instution is clear in your stuff, i feel like some fics forget that about her or in trying to show that beatrice knows her stuff accidentally make it come across as if ava isn’t politically aware & needs to be lectured on politics by Beatrice
when canonically ava’s literally a abuse survivor who was abused because of her disability and had religion used as justifiation for her abuse and so is kinda more than a little against institutions and systems
anyway as a disabled person it’s more than a bit exhausting to read “abled person lectures disabled person on politics” regardless of authorial intent, so just wanted to say thanks for staying away from that, reading your ava characterization is really a breath of fresh air
absolutely! ava is so so so smart!! most gaps she has, at least for me canonically, are because she just didn't have access to any sound schooling (obviously — especially with history, but also just basic civics? exposure to different politic? etc). so it's like, of course ava wouldn't know that the nazis persecuted & killed queer people if she learned subpar history (undoubtedly with the shittiest pedagogy on the planet) from nuns who hated her — but once she learns it, she's immediately like oh. that contextually makes sense in a horrible way. fuck them. like it's not an issue of politic but just of nuanced & additional information — in the real world i'm sure ava's politic would (of course) grow (as hopefully all of ours irl continue to do lol), but it wouldn't be a real shift in politic, especially bc of an able-bodied person lecturing her or something. it would just be one that contains more concrete events, history, current povs, etc, because she would just learn more & have access to stuff!
i also think like you said that when bea lectures in the show, that's mostly about ava just being goofy when she needs to be serious, or definitely just not understanding the insane situation she's found herself in — which contextually is fair, but i don't think would happen with politic or ethic sort of beyond the halo/battles, etc. even her like 'you should think about someone other than yourself' is mostly motivated by ava's mission/the ocs's mission; ava is selfish but she has every right to be. & of course that's ava's main character arc growth: realizing that, while she always wants to be selfish (kissing bea), she has been put into a role that is far greater than her. that's a politic in itself, really
in reality bea probably has more to learn about politic & anti-state ethic than ava lol. i get why this isn't A Thing in the show but if i choose to throw them into NOT the catholic church lol, it's a reality that bea is a queer woman of color, specifically an asian woman, which does matter — in ways that can hurt but also in finding community & history that informs/builds a particular politic. i feel like it's incomplete to not at least include that a LITTLE. but yah bea like... rly fucks w The Institution at least for some of the show. she's got a lot to unlearn!
& yes i TOTALLY agree that ava's abuse & disability (even if people choose to write her as no longer disabled which.... a choice but ok lol) would absolutely eventually really inform her politic. i simply haven't gotten to this yet but ava finding disability justice (& by that i obviously mean like intersectional disability justice led by & designed for queer & trans folks, especially qtpoc) would be so fucking cool for her! communal care? anti-state abolition? abolition of Institutions (psychiatric, medical, etc) that harm that are rooted in white supremacy (& specifically the church)... she would LOVE it. she would be so into it. it would be such a respite & passion & joy for her as she got older & realized she has such purpose through her experiences, without the halo & without any holy wars. also they would both be thoughtful about thinking transnationally which rocks.
anyway yah i feel like out of the two of them ava is actually the most likely to like a) access information in "non-academic" ways; b) have a more radical politic just inherently. not that i think bea is like a shitty neoliberal person forever or anything bc... she would also be v smart, but ava is awesome.

Alright, your turn! If YOUR OCs starred in a movie, who would you pick to play them?
(I know you have a ton of OCs, feel free to just do the ones you can come up with a good answer for - I struggled to pick people for this and I have like half the OCs you do lol)
Alright so some of these people aren't actors or anything but they're definitely who I imagine the characters looking like-
Siv: Romy Flores, 100%. She's got the face, the nose, the "don't give a fuck" attitude. All she'd really need is gray contact lenses and either a haircut or a short wig.
Tumblr media
Hailey: Lynk Lee isn't 100% perfect for Hailey, since Hailey has a more stocky, muscular build, but in the hypothetical movie, if she were to do some weight training, she could definitely do Hailey justice. Also, she'd need green/blue contacts for Hailey's post-death heterochromatic eyes.
Tumblr media
Jay: Elliot Fletcher is the closest I can get to how I imagine Jay looking, though I would hypothetically want to cast someone who was both transmasc and physically disabled, since Jay is both.
Tumblr media
Cassandra: Halle is absolutely perfect for Cassandra- though if she were to play the role, she'd need violet contacts for Cassandra's magic-corrupted eyes.
Tumblr media
Arya: Cayley Spivey, 100%! This, but with elf ears and a shaggy mullet! (fun fact: Spivey was the fancast for Siv's original design)
Tumblr media
Esme: Ava Max is my current fancast for her. She's got the bleach blonde hair, the "party girl" vibe and the angular yet cutesy face.
Tumblr media
Gina: Ilianna Ayala Garcia would make a pretty good Gina, imo, though she's a little older than the actual Gina was when she died, what movie doesn't have a 20-something playing a teen?
Tumblr media
Ember: Marina Summers, a queen who starred in S1 of Drag Race Philippines, is absolutely perfect for Ember!
Tumblr media
Cat: Even though she doesn't necessarily look entirely like Cat, I've never been able to imagine anyone but Anna Cathcart as her. I think its just the vibes lol.
Tumblr media
Kyle: This random-ass hockey player from Minnesota, Ryan Johnson, has been my faceclaim for Kyle since I first created the character.
Tumblr media
Max: Heng Sokvisal makes a pretty good Max, just slap on a pair of glasses and we're good to go!
Tumblr media
Khalil: Shameik Moore makes the perfect Khalil imo. No comments, just vibes. (though since Khalil works as a makeup artist I'd definitely give him some gold eyeliner or something)
Tumblr media
Reggie: Winnie Harlow's pretty much perfect for Reggie, though she'd need blue contacts because Reggie has xer dad's eyes.
Tumblr media
Ameerah: Amandla Stenberg makes an absolutely amazing Ameerah, I'd definitely want her to have the light blonde hair like in the picture, and she'd need pink contacts to match Ameerah's description.
Tumblr media
Rania: Denise Bidot, 10000000%. She's been my faceclaim for her for like, FOREVER.
Tumblr media
Director Hawke: Julianne Moore, specifically in her "President Coin" look. Director Hawke was loosely based on President Coin, so I've always imagined her looking somewhat like her.
Tumblr media
Meredith: Rachel Zegler, but with glasses and lighter brown hair.
Tumblr media
Onnie: Same as Siv lol it's her multiversal variant
Jessi: Same as Esme, multiversal variant
Pippa: Veondre Mitchell is the perfect Pippa! She was actually the one who I initially based Pippa's appearance off of.
Tumblr media
Hyun-Ki: Park Sung-Hoon is a pretty good Hyun-Ki. From his dramatic looks to his honestly kinda gorgeous voice. I don't doubt he'd make a great Hyun-Ki
Tumblr media
Thalia: Teyonah Parris is Thalia, there's no doubt about it. Ever since I watched Wandavision and saw her as Monica Rambeau, I knew that she'd be perfect to play Thalia in her hypothetical movie.
Tumblr media
Reyna: K-Pop soloist AleXa is a pretty good fancast for her, though she'd need some pretty good SFX makeup or CGI due to Reyna being a near-human felid species.
Tumblr media
Athena: Alaqua Cox (AKA Echo from Hawkeye) is how I imagine Athena looks, but with a white streak in the front of her hair (and a lot more seductive of an aesthetic)
Tumblr media
Laila: Youtuber Beth Crowley is my faceclaim for Laila, though as Laila I'd want her to either don a short bob or a short wig, and amber contacts.
Tumblr media
Marie: Mayu Maeshima is a great faceclaim for Marie, though she'd need SFX makeup for Marie's Romulan features and her Borg implants.
Tumblr media
Qiara: Due to Qiara's nature as a being of pure energy, she doesn't necessarily take the same form at all times. However, the one she frequents the most could very well be portrayed by Chiquis Rivera.
Tumblr media
Liah: Raquel Rodriguez would make a great Liah, she has the right height and build for her, she would just need SFX makeup for Liah's Cardassian features, and hazel contacts.
Tumblr media
Samira: Desiree Akhavan would make a pretty good Samira. She definitely fits how I imagine Samira to look, and she's got the right vibe to play her as well.
Tumblr media
Sohelia: Golshifteh Farahani is a pretty good faceclaim for Sohelia, though she'd need some light makeup to make her skin more ashy, due to Sohelia being half-vampire.
Tumblr media
Vanessa: Storm Reid is absolutely perfect for Vanessa, though for most of the movie she'd be replaced with either a puppet or CGI double for her monster form.
Tumblr media
Dolores: Diane Guerrero is perfect for Dolores. She'd just need some minor makeup in order to look more like a vampire, i.e. ashy skin, red eyes, fangs, etc.
Tumblr media
I don't have faceclaims for Eric, Jacob, Antonio, Cory, Soraya, Aldrich, Matt, or Victorie yet.

WIP Friday :0 thank you @disabled-dean for the tag!! 😊
rules: post a snippet of a wip you're hyped to post
This is from my Meg/Ava/Ruby fic where Meg's all in on Ava to be Hell's Champion (even after she loses...) while Ruby's trying very hard not to feel kinship as she does what ever it takes to get an audience with God.
[Ruby:] "You don't think there's a Heaven?"
[Meg:] "In this world? No. What would that even look like?"
"I don't know," Ruby admits, leaning back on her palms to think on it, "Somewhere nice, I guess."
"Any version of Heaven I've ever heard of just sounds like something one of us would cook up," Meg says, leaning forward on her knees, "Mind control. Imprisonment. Emptiness. No one wants to be one thing forever. Hell by any other name would smell as putrid."
She has a point. Ruby knows Heaven and Angels must exists - who else are they going to be fighting in the Apocalypse? - but she can't picture it either. Then again, they are both demons. Maybe something got twisted in their minds somwehere down the line, made it impossible to think of somewhere wholly good. They're not the ideal candidates for hope Maybe that's why it hurt so much to have lost it again....
Tagging @castielafflicted @astralpenguin andddd @faithdeans yous got anything in the works? 👀

coming off the high of 17776 au so... 17 and 6 (pjo au)? also i know it's a sequel so this may be cheating but 18 (orbital mechanics)? many thanks 🙇
i’m glad you liked that first bit of 17776 au it spent a whole day incubating in my head before i wrote it so… chaos of conception is = to chaos of execution 😌
17. what highly specific au do you want to read or write even though you feel like you might be the only person to appreciate it?
i answered this already but the aus are unending so… i would LOVE to read a how to train your dragon au where ava gets to bond with a night fury and bea can?? help with the design for the rig to help with its damaged tail and you know i love hiccup and toothless because they’re canonically disabled so i think that would be an AMAZING au to read or to write 🥰🥰
sidebar but i’m also forever grateful for the alien bea au because i wanted to read something like that so bad ever since i read Axiom’s End (what a book what a book what a-) and then it was just!!! there. and there’s a goat in that fic called daisychain 🥹 and its the BEST goat so ha!
6. what’s one fact about the universe of pjo au that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
because it’s not finished there a bunch of stuff i can’t WAIT to mention i have so many ideas for it and details and scenes i can’t wait to share. but.. sadly writer’s block is killing me (plus thesis 😔) right now so i’m chipping away at it
but!!! i would have really liked to actually write the scene where ava first steps into the ocean. in the same spirit as the infamous beach run scene from s1 of warrior nun
i just think it would have been,,, so beautiful. obviously we get her and chanel in that early scene. ava getting to just barely be in the ocean, but oooo there’s something so different about ava getting to step into it and feel her body fully for the first time in a long time. that would have been i think just so much fun to write. i might still do a flashback to it but… nothing beats the narrative going there on its own you know?
18. if you wrote a sequel to orbital mechanics what would it involve?
oh! well i have ideas actually for a few more chapters of orbital mechanics, especially after playing a lot of Jedi: Survivor and the.. very very intriguing possibilities that raised.
i think it would actually be amazing to take the orbital mechanics iterations of my girls and put them in situations. imagine the clumsy familiar tendinous way they’d fight, how absolutely batshit lilith and ava would go (together) if… say… bea was captured.
plus i want to explore long term chronic pain with bea - maybe the idea of replacing the horrid black wires in her arm with a gentler kind, or bea thinking about amputation which is you know a valid approach and the her choice of it really compels me.
so!! yea h! i am trapped in want to write too many things land 😭😭🥹

@its-leethee: #wondering how much of an outlier among elves lujanne's attitude toward ava was
YEAH that's an interesting question, I actually forgot about Ava because my mind just kind of glosses over her very 90s "all she needs is to be given a chance to prove there's no difference at all between her and someone not disabled!" narrative lmao
and then I wrote literally 1200 words of absolute rambling nonsense
Like, the illusion on Ava precludes her from getting any kind of accommodations for her very real disability—not even Ellis knows that she is still compensating for her missing leg in everything she does. It's also a little baffling that the answer here was "everyone needs a Very Special Lesson about prejudice" given that the original objection to allowing Ellis to keep Ava was that they can't afford to feed her, and (when Ellis argues to at least take care of her until she can be returned to the wild) that she would not survive among her former pack. I don't know enough about wild wolf behavior to know if that's true or not, but it also doesn't really matter, because the end result is apparently as soon as everyone sees Ava with four legs, it's... totally okay for Ellis to keep her forever?
(Honestly, my bet on what happened there is that the entire town just kind of quietly agreed that you should probably treat someone who receives inexplicable miraculous healing up on the local cursed mountain really well, or at least not euthanize them, and so everyone pitched in to support Ellis's family taking in Ava.)
So like... with Ava, she's essentially only disabled when people can see that she's disabled, like the opposite of an invisible disability. Obviously this would appeal to Lujanne, being particularly attuned to the aspect of the Moon primal that is associated with perceptions vs. reality. Would things have worked out as well if Ava had needed accommodations? It's not really clear, and probably would depend on exactly what she needed—there is admittedly a solid chance that people would treat the need for a basic amount of help differently from someone perceived as able-bodied vs. someone visibly disabled. (Usually that is in a negative direction, where the perceived able-bodied person is assumed to not "need" the accommodation, but it could also happen the other way in this case, with people having more patience in training and caring for a puppy who they are assured will grow up into an able and useful working animal.)
ANYWAY, given the sharp divide between Lujanne's experience of the Moon primal and the much more black-and-white way Rayla, Runaan, and others of the Silvergrove appear to experience it, PLUS the fact that even setting aside Ghosting, the punishment for surviving a failed assassination mission is literally loss of a limb? I'm not known for being very charitable toward Moonshadow culture, but in this case I don't think it's out of line to say that a lot of the Silvergrove would probably not be super keen on a three-legged shadowpaw or whatever. At best, you might get a "those of us who are able and strong are duty-bound to protect those who are not" level of cultural condescension... no one would be picking it out as their mount.
But to veer wildly off of the main topic here: like I said, I literally forgot about Ava as a disabled character since she functionally isn't, compared to, say, Amaya. Amaya is incredibly competent, but she is also undeniably accommodated by her peers and culture: those close to her are varying degrees of fluent in the sign language she uses, with many of them at minimum able to fully understand her without interpretation, and then she also has a dedicated interpreter for those who are not. She also has been blessed by the narrative with lip-reading superpowers to make things easier for everyone creating and consuming this show from within a culture that is at best indifferent and frequently actively hostile toward deaf people. Could they have worldbuilt a setting where Amaya's accommodations were baked into the entire culture of Katolis, such that everyone communicates with her entirely in sign language? Sure, but I can also see why they didn't, given that dominant media culture in the west definitely isn't ready to accept that.
But my point is that, unlike Ava's disability, Amaya is a character whose deafness is acknowledged and accommodated by both her culture and the narrative (on at least some level). It doesn't happen super often, but there are situations where Amaya being deaf makes a difference in her approach to or the outcome of a situation. One great example that they put in is the captured soldier at the Breach being able to communicate to Amaya that they're in danger by signing, which is a case where her deafness and the ways she is accommodated by those around her is a huge positive that saves lives! Then there's also the opening of s4, where because of her own lingering biases and inability to communicate in the moment, she attacks a bunch of innocent noncombatants and could have seriously injured or killed them while believing she was fighting for her life.
Interestingly, the narrative treatment of Rayla's increasingly injured hand is similar—and to be fair, Rayla's injured hand is, in fact, a disability... just one that winds up being temporary. We see a lot of circumstances where Rayla is mildly or even severely impaired by pain, weakness, or inability to use her slowly dying hand. Some, like dropping the egg through the ice, have plot-derailing consequences! Part of why there's so much emphasis on it is that it's functioning as a ticking clock for s1, but it's also narratively meant to be a challenge that reveals Rayla's character to the audience, rather than a narrative-independent character trait like Amaya's deafness. One of the things that's revealed about Rayla at the beginning of s2, as she is elatedly demonstrating all the stuff she can do with two functional hands, is the value she places on her own physical abilities. Similar to Soren, she has been raised and trained in a way where her body and its capabilities are her main asset, and if she loses some or all of those capabilities, it's a potentially existential-level Problem(tm). That says a little bit about Rayla and a little bit about Moonshadow culture, IMO.
(FWIW, my estimation is that Rayla would be more impaired by losing a hand than Soren would, given her acrobatic and two-weapon fighting style. Even in a positive and nurturing environment, she'd struggle a lot with self-worth in having to re-learn new skills and limitations, along with clumsiness or total inability in performing moves that she once trained into instinct. Soren, meanwhile, would strap a shield on the handless arm and be good to go.)
SO YEAH IDK Ava is kind of an outlier in how the setting/narrative is trying to treat disability, which is understandable since she's really not even a second- or third-string character, she's basically a plot device. Lujanne is also pretty unique in terms of Moonshadow elves that we've seen, so who knows. I mean, they can't ALL be like Rayla and Runaan, right? Right?
(Or, as something I just thought of: Lujanne is the protector of the Moon Nexus, and she's confronted with the situation of a kid and a puppy who are so desperate as to have walked through all her bean-freaking illusions. To reinforce the mountains spooky reputation and preserve the safety of the Nexus, she could a) kill them so the story is that they went up the mountain and were never seen again, or b) establish another tale of weird shit happening while also resolving the issue that sent Ellis away from her home and up the mountain. A bit risky seeing as we are immediately given a direct example of people who are desperate enough for miraculous healing to similarly fight through the illusions in the main characters, but it also means she doesn't have to straight-up murder a sad kid and her puppy.)
thinking again about how Janai not only doesn’t know sign language but is unfamiliar with the entire concept and has to find a linguistics scholar to translate for Amaya—not a dedicated interpreter, which you’d expect the center of Sunfire elf governance to have if they provided any kind of services for deaf citizens—along with Sol Regem’s blindness and apparent subsequent sidelining from both the draconic and Sunfire power structures, and the overall chilling picture that paints of attitudes toward disability in Sunfire and possibly other elf cultures in this Denny’s tonight

comfort characters and otps?
ooooooo good question hmmm...
If we're talking about non OCs, then uh- Adrien from Miraculous my cat boy son yes and um, I mostly ship him with Marinette but actually I don't care who he is with so long as he is happy
also Brave is my comfort movie so Merida and all she needs is her bow, her horse, and the wind blowing through her hair
If we ARE talking about OCs, then I have these two, Wraith and Angel! Their story is long and complicated but essentially, Wraith is this somewhat prejudiced against species of sort of lizard dragon people. They have tails and scales (and no horns... I should give them horns... why did I never give them horns... I love characters with horns) and I should just give you a drawing I've done of her.
Angel is a cat person, oops. (I have a problem with compulsively adding cat people to my stories... and this one was no exception. Angel was not supposed to exist in this story and then I added her spur of the moment and she was originally a guy and now she's a transwoman so my ship can be gay oops.)
And they're a couple! Wraith has had a super hard life, grew up in poverty, accidentally bonded a magical out of control creature, ran away from home because she thought she killed her sister, ended up competing in a life or death game where she became infamous for having the highest kill count though none (or little of it) was intentional. Has horrible self esteem. And then Angel, her childhood best friend of like a year that she hasn't seen in forever who accidentally ends up in the same city as her and they have an adorable coffee shop romance.
They're so cute I adore them. (there's way more to this story and the world and other characters but have this tiny snippet)
Other comfort OCs are another couple of Silver and Ava. Silver's this disabled model, rich son of the local mafia boss (his mom), all of his siblings run crime rings and the only reason he doesn't is because of his disability so he's actually a good moral person, very nice, very funny, surrounded by his loving but morally dubious family who will kill anyone who tries to harm him.
Then there's Ava. Who is really just trying to live her life but one of her roommates is obsessed with this model guy. So she ends up attending one of the shows mostly against her will, actually gets to meet him and oops he gets a crush on her.
Shenanigans ensure and they end up dating. The end
also Silver's father may or may not have been killed when he was a child but is actually still alive and abducts him later and there may or may not be magic involved-
Those are the two main couples I always come back to so I'd say they're my favorites. I have a loooot more stories than just these two though.
(also the one with Silver and Ava my cousin and I accidentally made a crossover with one of her stories involving a character named Lulu who sort of gets adopted into Silver's family and I love it, their dynamic is so good)

The 2nd gen had one outstanding season, one mediocre season and one terrible season. In that order. The trajectory is bad. I hope that the writers cared enough to atleast fix a few of the problems they encountered from last season so they can at least push out another mediocre season to satisfy a greater portion of the active fandom. Then the show needs to die forever
I wouldn’t exactly say that s6 was mediocre—it did occasionally suffer from pacing issues, but Fatou’s season touched on many important issues and gave them care as Nora’s did. So many people were represented & were touched by Fatou’s season, how they dealt with her learning disability, and her relationship with Kieu My. As for Isi’s season, I think that the new team took over s7 rather abruptly & used some of Jünglinge’s structured plan for the character’s trajectory…. but also tried to introduce their own creations into the story while neglecting Isi’s dynamics with both the Cashqueens & the Instas from previous seasons, as well as sidelining Ava greatly after one “apology” clip. While I’m glad Lukas & Eren got to touch on topics of gender that are obviously very important to them personally, I know that the season would have been radically different in Jünglinge’s hands, and I’m assuming Bantry Bay didn’t like that at all—hence the new team taking over. And of course, now that s7 is over & the team can make their own choices regarding the central character, they obviously went with the “safest” choice, the choice that wouldn’t piss off the production company with the story arcs & character trajectories. I certainly hope they have taken criticisms from last season into account, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. The IG account has already pinned comments under Mailin’s announcement telling people to be “less negative.” I’m assuming Bantry Bay/Funk/whoever is only thinking of the bottom line and advertising, rather than actually representing the audiences they catered to in s5 & s6, and that is so, so sad.

……………………………………………………………………
“I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do,” Gideon said.
“No, there has to be something that can be done,” Ava said as Sara heard her pick up a tablet.
“I am truly sorry,” Gideon said from above. “I can run a full eye to brain diagnosis, but I fear the same result.”
“Do it,” Ava said and Sara can hear her getting more frantic by the second. Sara reached out her hand to her and Ava picked up her hand and pressed a kiss to her palm.
“Captain Lance?” Gideon asked, waiting for Sara's permission.
“It wouldn't hurt to try,” Sara said, with a shrug.
Ava carefully adjusted the eye goggles over Sara's face. Although Sara couldn't see anything, she could feel as Gideon ran the scan over her eyes.
Sara closed her eyes after Gideon finished. “I’m sorry Captain Lance.”
Sara waited for a second after Ava took off the goggles, before opening her eyes again, but she still couldn't see. Her world is entirely black. She couldn't even tell if the lights are on or off, it's just an endless black void. Sara put her hands over her face, her eyebrows, her eyelids, even her eyelashes all felt the same. There were no rough scars or raised angry cataracts, just soft eyelashes that bushed her fingertips.
“We'll just have to keep trying. We can figure this out. I'll have Constantine and Charlie and Nate do some research. There has to be something, maybe there's a spell or a potion, or…” Ava trailed off and Sara trailed her hand up Ava’s arm and neck to Ava’s face, and Ava held her hand to her cheek. “The loom. We’ll use the loom and get your sight back.”
Sara just nodded and rubbed Ava’s cheek with her thumb. She had heard of how blind people would run their fingers over the facial structures of people they loved, but Sara didn't want to feel Ava's face, she wanted to see it.
Sara sat up and Ava put her hands on her shoulders, rubbing up and down her arms. Sara took a deep breath, in and out as she tried to calm her anxiety and settle into her unseeing world. She settled into her skin for a moment before she realized how itchy she was and scratching at her arms.
“Can I take a shower? I've kind of been in these clothes for a week.”
“Of course honey,” Ava said, Sara can't see Ava's expression, but she can imagine how Ava tilted her head and drew her eyebrows together like she always did.
Ava walked her down the hall and stopped in front of the bathroom door. Gideon opened it for them and Sara moved towards it, feeling the wall for the doorway.
“Why don't you hop in the shower and I'll go grab your towel and bring you a change of clothing okay?” Ava said letting go of her.
“Ava wait,” Sara reached out again and managed to grab ahold of the back of Ava’s shirt.
“What's wrong?”
Sara bit her lip and stopped herself from admitting that she needed Ava there with her. The shower was always a mess of everyone's different products and nothing was ever in the same place. Mick had some weird body wash that always smelled like oil and wood that ended up where her shampoo should have been. She didn't know where anything was and she couldn't even remember where she put her loofah, whether it was on the faucet or one of the hooks along the wall.
Plus, the only way she can tell it apart from the one that Nate used was because of the color and she can't exactly see that right now. She needed Ava to pick it out for her and It was stupid, she knew that, but she didn’t want to use Nate’s loofah. Sara hated that she had to have help right now, when all she wanted to do was try and figure it out for herself, but that option seemed equally hard.
“Can you come back and shower with me?”
Sara can hear Ava take a step forward and she felt Ava put her hands on Sara’s shoulders before she felt Ava’s lips on her own. It was just a quick kiss, but it was just enough for Sara to relax, as she knew Ava would help her.
“Of course, are you okay waiting for me to go grab our stuff, or do you want to come with me?”
Sara took a deep breath. She wrapped her arm around Ava's waist and leaned into her for a moment. Ava grounded her in a way that Sara loved. Every time Ava held her, she felt safe enough to take a breath and recharge. In Ava’s arms, she could take on the world, again.
“I'll be okay, you go grab our stuff and I'll meet you in the shower,” Sara said letting her smile rest playfully on her lips.
“Well I guess I'll have to hurry back then,” Ava says her voice going up an octave in excitement.
Sara let her fingers dance up Ava’s sides and Ava let out a laugh. Sara wondered if she smiled too. Ava pulled away and Sara heard the door to the bathroom open and close, signaling that she was all alone.
Sara took a deep breath and turned around. She knew that the toilet and shower were to her left so she put her hand on the wall. The waved metal was smooth under her fingers as it dipped and crested as she walked to the shower door. The toilet was to her right and the shower stall was to her left. She quickly used the toilet and stopped as she realized that the sink was in the middle of the wall across from her. It would be easier to just walk forward and she could do that, right? Sara e took a step towards the sink, then another, and another until she ran into it with her hip and her toes. She pulled back and rubbed the spot on her hip, as she cursed the ceramic sink. Who puts a ceramic sink in a metal ship? Rip Hunter that’s who.
Sara shook her head as she washed her hands and dried them off. She took off her rings and put them in a dish by the sink. As she placed them in the dish, she heard the telltale sign of one ring falling off of the sink and onto the floor. Sara paused and listened to it roll around before it stopped. Sara ran her fingers through her hair, she had no idea where it was.
Maybe she could use her sight to see it. Sara squeezed her eyes shut and tried her hardest to envision it in her mind, but nothing came of it. No visions of the future, no answer to where her ring was. Sara doesn't give up, she couldn’t, she got down on her hands and knees and tried to feel around for the ring. Nevertheless, all she found were strands of hair from Zari and this weird gel that smelled like what Nate puts in his hair. After spending what felt like forever, running her hands over the dirty bathroom floor, she's about ready to scream as Ava walked in.
“Hey babe, did you lose something?” Ava asked and Sara can hear her light hearted tone and her footsteps as she walked over to hang up their towels.
“Just my stupid ring fell off the sink,” Sara said sitting back on her legs.
“Oh, here it is,” Ava said and Sara can hear her pick up the ring that clinked on the floor as Ava picked it up.
Sara reached up to where she thought Ava was and tried to grab the ring from her fingers but just ended up swiping her hand through the air.
Sara swore and stood up, reaching out for Ava. Ava met her halfway and took Sara's hand, turning it over and putting the ring in her palm.
“Since we're about to shower do you want me to put it in your ring bowl?” Ava gently asked as she rubbed the back of Sara’s hand.
“No I can do it myself,” Sara insisted and pulled her hand away to reach for the sink. she ran her fingers along the side of the sink until she reached the dish, but in her anger, she was more forceful than necessary and knocked it onto the floor. Sara heard all the rings scattered across the floor and the glass bowl shatter with them.
“Hang on Sara, don't move you're standing around the broken fragments, just let me grab a broom and I'll clean it up.”
Ava ran out of the room and Sara just stood there. She felt so stupid. She broke something, she’s never done that. She couldn’t even find her ring and put it in the bowl without somebody else's help. Is this what her life would be like now? Would she need help doing the simplest of tasks? Would she ever get her independence back? Tears collected in Sara's eyes, but she was determined not to cry.
Sara heard the door to the bathroom open again and quickly wiped the tears from her eyes. She tried to take a deep breath that only came in staggered broken sobs. Sara hid her face from where Ava could see.
Sara heard Ava take a deep breath and then her footsteps across the room and she wrapped her arms around Sara. Ava just held her and Sara was able to take another deep breath more easily in Ava’s arms. Sara felt ready to pull away and let go, but Ava pulled her back and gave her one extra squeeze before she let Sara go.
“All right, I got the broom and vacuum, so I'm going to put your rings in the pocket of your jeans and I'll get this all cleaned up.”
Ava quickly got the mess cleaned up and Sara stripped and headed straight for the showers. She felt along the wall until she reached the door and pushed it open. She reached for the knob and turned the water to the setting she liked, feeling the water before hopping in and standing under the waterfall. Ava wordlessly got in behind her and wrapped her arms around Sara's waist before pressing a kiss to her shoulder.
Although Ava’s hug had helped, it still hadn't chased away the thoughts and Sara began to sob. Her chest heaved with her shaky breath and she struggled to take in enough air after every sob. Ava just held her tighter and whispered in her ear that she was there for her. They stayed like that, with Sara sobbing and Ava holding her as they stood under the water. Sara cried herself out and let the warm water wash away the salt from her face.
“I know this is hard, Sara. I know you wanted to do it on your own like you used to. I'm going to try and help you make sure you are able to do that okay. I want you to know that if I help you it’s not because I think you're weak. It’s because I love you and I want to take care of you, but I’ll only help if you ask, okay.”
“Okay,” Sara breathed out. “Can you help me find the shampoo?”
“Yeah,” Ava said as Sara heard her reach out for the shampoo.
Sara heard the snap of the cap as Ava squeezed out a dollop of shampoo oh her head. Before she put the bottle back, she put it in Sara's hand and then guided Sara's hand over to the ledge in the shower.
“I am putting off shampoo on the very left on the top shelf next to your conditioner and next to that is your body wash, and your loofah is on the hook underneath it,” Ava said, leading her hand over each item. “If you want to use your razor let me know and I'll get it.”
Sara shook her head, she only shaved her underarms about once a week if that. She was planning on doing so today, but just didn't feel like figuring out how to do it and didn't want Ava to do it for her. Sara did let Ava wash her hair though, the act of care was something Ava had occasionally done for her when Sara was too tired to do it herself.
Ava reached out and wiggled her fingers under Sara’s arm, tickling her and making Sara giggle. She turned around and tickled that one spot on Ava’s hip that always sent her into a fit of giggles, but Ava captured both of her hands and helped them above her head.
“Hey that's not fair, you started it,” Sara said, with a pout on her lip that she knew was hard to resist.
“And now I'm ending it,” Ava said and Sara felt her lips against her own. It was a quick kiss and Ava pulled back again before grabbing Sara's shoulders. “Now turn around I haven't even conditioned your hair yet.”
Sara complied and turned around. She reached up and felt along the bottles, before pulling out the conditioner and handing it to Ava.
Ava leaned in and Sara could feel her lips smile against her shoulder. “See, you're already adapting. You're going to be just fine Sara, and it’s only temporary.”
Temporary, Sara thought she held onto the idea that one day she'll see Ava face again. Sara knew that Ava was right, but a twinge of sadness ran through her heart at the thought of never seeing Ava smile again. Sure she could feel it through her fingers or if Ava pressed her lips against her like she had just done, but it wasn’t the same. Sara took a deep breath and tried to focus instead on Ava's nimble fingers as they massage the conditioner into her scalp.
Ava took the showerhead from off the well and ran it down Sara's hair, gently washing away the conditioner before collecting Sara's hair and pulling it over her shoulders. Once she was done with Sara’s hair, Ava grabbed something and Sara felt the loofah in gentle show circles over her shoulders. Ava gently scrubbed every inch of Sara's body, going down her shoulders to her back, over her butt, to her thighs, and eventually her feet. Sara turned around and Ava came up the other side, over her mound, her belly, her breasts, and her collarbone. Ava then gently took the showerhead and put it back before Sara stepped under the stream again. Sara couldn’t hear Ava move around, but she wasn't sure what Ava was doing, she only assumed that she was washing herself.
It was only a few moments before Ava stepped behind her and wrapped her arms around Sara's waist, resting her head on Sara's shoulder. It feels so good to be held. It was so lonely to be blind. Sara could hear those around her, but she couldn't see them and it was hard to know who was there unless they talked or touched her. Sara's love language had always been touch, and she held Ava's arms around her waist, wishing she could hold her there forever under the warm water of the shower.
Sara felt Ava’s lips against her shoulder and Sara moans. She moaned and leaned against Ava, tilting her neck to give her more access. It’s a silent signal for Ava to continue and Ava kissed her neck more intently. She moved to suck a hickey into Sara's shoulder and Sara responded more intently, moving Ava’s hands that were resting on her belly down to her mound of blond curls. Ava smiled but she only touched her outer labia, never dipping further to actually touch her as she continued to kiss Sara's shoulder.
Ava pulled away, as Sara whined in protest before she could feel Ava move down. Ava's lips moved over her collarbone before Ava put her hands on Sara's hips and turned her around. The shower ran warm against Sara's back as Ava leaned in to kiss her labia. Sara stepped back, putting both of her hands against the wall, and leaned against it as Ava followed her.
Ava finally parsed Sara’s labia to lick her clit. Sara threw her head back, the shower was hot and the steam filled her lungs as she moaned Ava’s name. Ava pulled her closer, holding her hips and pulling Sara’s leg over her shoulder. She lapped at Sara's clit with her tongue alternating between swirls and licks all driving Sara crazy. She got worked up so fast, her muscles tense as she stood on her toes, but Ava seemed to hold her just before her pleasure could reach the cliff.
Sara had been eaten out by a lot of women, but with Ava, it’s not just different, it's Ava. Sara didn't like to compare her flames or girlfriends; each one was good and unique in their own way. Like people who were authoritative but secretly thought for her Ava wasn't dark and brooding, Ava was soft and a dork. Sara liked that Ava didn't force Sara to be something she wasn't. She took Sara as she was and she tried.
Right now, Sara knew that Ava wasn't prolonging things to tease her or control her pleasure, Ava was trying to get Sara to relax further before it ends. Sara melted against the wall, putting her back and her ass against the warm shower wall. Sara sank down from her toes and put more of her weight into Ava's shoulders and arm. That's when Ava becomes more persistent.
Sara’s fingers tangle in her hair as Ava leaned in to suck on Sara's clit for a moment before swirling her tongue around the swollen bud. Sara moaned, the sound was louder than the fan and the water hitting the floor. Ava’s hands grip her hips and Sara finally goes over the edge, coming on Ava’s tongue. Sara called out her name as Ava licked her through it.
As the pleasure ended Sara caught her breath and she felt Ava’s grip loosen underneath her. Ava cleaned her up, licking away every last bit of cum, before trailing her kisses back up Sara's body.
Sara wrapped her arms around Ava’s neck and leaned into her, her legs still unsteady from her climax. She was content to stay there, under the warm water with Ava and Ava made no move to ask Sara to return the favor. When she was younger, Sara used to think that one-sided sex was selfish, but as she stayed in Ava’s arms, Sara knew she wasn’t being selfish. What Ava did was selfless by giving Sara what she needed, comforting her and relaxing her, and just being there for her as Ava always did.
Ava sensed that Sara needed to stay there and they stood there under the shower until the water turned cold and one of the boys banged on the door to let him in to pee. Ava led her out and wrapped her up in a towel. Sara didn't mind being babied just this once as Ava quickly dried her off before slipping her robe onto her shoulders. Ava quickly tied it and patted her shoulder, before opening the door for Nate, who quickly thanked her as the door to the toilet slammed close.
“Do you want to do your hair?” Ava asked as Sara heard her open the cabinet and the products clinked together.
Sara nodded and Ava handed her the products in the correct order, letting Sara do her hair herself as Ava hadn't quite gotten Sara’s curl routine down. Sara finished with Ava helping her plop her hair and she heard Nate exit the toilet. They finished the rest of their nightly routine and headed back to their room.
Despite the fact that Sara just got out of a coma it had been quite an eventful day. The second that her knees bumped up against the bed, she leaned down to crawl under the covers. She hears Ava walk around the room pulling open drawers and cabinets and she tossed Sara her favorite pajamas. One of Ava's old long sleeved shirts that smelled wonderfully like her. Sara quickly changed and rolled over to face her nightstand. She reached out for her water bottle and her fingers brushed up against her book of crossword puzzles.
“Do you want to do one before bed?” Ava asked as Sara heard her get in as the bed creaked and dipped.
“Not exactly,” Sara deadpanned as she put the book back and reached for her water bottle. As she took a sip of her water, Ava reached across her. When she pulled back Sara could hear the sound of the book being opened.
Ava snaked a hand around her waist and pulled her over to rest up against her chest. She put her arms around Sara and settled the book in her lap. “Come on, I’ll read the clues and you can tell me the answers.”
Sara smiled as Ava read off the first clue. It didn't take long for them to finish the puzzle as Ava contributed with her own answers although they weren’t always correct.
“I told you that the answer was roam,” Sara said as she heard Ava write in the correct answer.
“I still think that rove worked just as well,” Ava said as Sara heard her turn the page to the next crossword and put the pencil in between the pages before shutting the book.
“While the weird vocabulary does come in handy, let's stick to actual words next time.”
“Oh, so you let me play with you next time?” Ava asked, referencing how Sara had sworn she never let either continue to play with her again if she continued to give her wrong suggestions a few minutes earlier.
“The benefit outweighs the doubt.”
“You're just happy I thought of the word gazebo,” Ava whispered her breaths hot in Sara's ear.
“I would have thought of it eventually,” Sara insisted.
Ava just leaned down to press a messy kiss to her cheek and tickled her side. Sara giggled as she kicked her legs and wiggled around in Ava's arms. Ava had a death grip on her and Sara eventually retaliated by reaching for Ava's weak spot.
“Okay, okay uncle,” Ava shrieked as Sara tickled her. Sara immediately pulled her hands away and sat back on Ava's thigh.
Sara heard Ava sigh and felt her fingers drift up her arm to hold her cheek. Her thumb brushed her cheek as Sara closed her eyes. She sank down and buried herself in Ava’s chest. Ava leaned back and pulled the blanket up to her neck. Sara heard the click of the lamp, although she noticed no difference in the change of light as her world was still black.
Ava wrapped her arms around her back and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Goodnight my love.”
“Goodnight,” Sara whispered.
That night Sara dreamed of how things looked. She walked through the halls of the Waverider in her mind and she saw the lights in the floors and the faces of each Legends as she walked past them. She saw Ava’s smile and her expression of love. Sara woke up still wrapped in Ava’s arms, but her world was just sound, feeling, taste, and smell. A few tears dripped down her cheeks and she laid her head back down on Ava’s chest. A part of her grieved for what she suspected she would never have again. Then she heard any of Ava’s heartbeat, strong and steady, she felt her warm arms around her, and Sara let herself find comfort in Ava's arms. It wouldn't fix anything, but she knew that with Ava by her side she could take on the world and Sara drifted off to sleep with this on her mind.

End of the Summer Bingo, Thoughts, and Conclusions
[Summer Bingo I]
I did it! I finished the Summer Reading Bingo Challenge II with almost a whole month to spare. So here is my usual finishing post, with the complete card and the list of what I read. I already can’t wait fot the next edition!
But first, what is this?
Everything is explained here, but basically this is a summer bingo done for fun in the Forgotten YA Gems group over at Goodreads, organized @brightbeautifulthings. There were different timelines and different cards to choose from, so there was something for everyone! I decided to go with three months and the biggest card.
How did you do it?
I basically tackled my TBR and all those books I’ve been known to say “I’ll have to read that one” for this. There were some backlist YA, which is basically the main aim of the group, but there were also some recent releases (such as Loveless) or books that had nothing in common with the group. And I tried my best to diversify my reads a little, too.
I’m super happy with my end result, because I read a lot and, while I enjoyed the few challenging squares there were, overall I had an easy time choosing books and could just focus on reading. Aaaaand I read four more October Daye books, which makes it clear that I use all my challenges to keep reading the series (I also tackled four books for the Comfort Zone Bingo, haha).
Here is my card, and below, under the cut, the complete list of what I read, with ratings and reviews.

| Edsel Euler |
Name: Edsel Jack Lincoln Euler
Nickname:  Red
Age: 20
Birthday: December 13th, 2082
Height: 5’10
Weight: 173lbs
Specials: Str  3 - Per 10 - End 8  - Cha 1  - Int  8 - Agi  12 - Luck - 3
Eyes: Hazel gray
Hair: Vibrant ginger, always kept a little long (like his father), and sometimes pulled up into a ponytail.
Body type: He likes to run and climb a lot, so he has toned legs and arms. Over all not particularly strong, kind of scrawny compared to his brother. Still says he is stronger than Elijah. Actually isn’t.
References: Here
Status Pre-War: Not born yet.
Status Currently: Causing chaos and explosions in Appalachia and giving his brother a life long headache.
Relationship Status: Taken
Spouse(s)/Partners: Lena Riggs
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Greek/American
Family: Red’s father is Ford Euler, who is the brother of Jack Euler. Ford is mostly ghoulified,  quiet, mild tempered and has severe anxiety. He barely ever leaves their home and if he does, Red’s Aunt Jolene has to come with him. Ford used to be slightly more adventurous before the war, but after the “loss" of his best friend and brother, Jack, and the death of his wife Alyce, his disability became crippling and he can’t do much without falling into a panic.
Red’s mother, Alcyoneus, was a psychiatrist before the war who became a Responder afterwards. She came upon the Euler homestead while searching for survivors and for some reason was immediately smitten with Ford (who was so shy he could barely formulate a sentence when around her). She ended up staying and eventually married him, but died from complications of child birth shortly after having the twins.
His Aunt Jolene and her wife Emma also live with them, along with her daughter Lorna May. Lorna May is Red’s best friend and partner in crime since he was born. They both get into a lot of reckless mischief together and Red has been trying to beat her in a fight for as long as he was able to swing a punch. Lorna May has always won (and broken his nose a couple times), but he still tries.
His twin brother is Elijah Euler. Elijah is Red’s complete opposite. Where Red is full of emotions that are all on the surface, Elijah keeps his locked up deep inside and very rarely shows them. He comes off harsh and aggressive, but Red loves him excessively and smothers him in affection (much to Eli’s chagrin). Despite that, Eli is extremely protective of both Red and Lorna May and even knocked out Lorna May’s vaultie boyfriend for enthusiastically telling Red that he was named after the ugliest car ever manufactured. He also completely destroys anyone who dares to mess with Ford, but he is the only one in their family who doesn’t baby him for his disabilities.
Languages: English
Disabilities/Illnesses/Injuries: Red has scars on his face which are the beginnings of ghoulification. He has panic attacks about it which are completely paralyzing, similar to his father’s brand of anxiety.
Allergies: None.
Scars: Losing the skin across his right cheek up to his ear. Other much smaller spots showing the signs of ghoulification along his chest, right leg, and hips. Tons of scars on his legs and elbows from being extremely clumsy and hurting himself all the time. Burn scar on the front and side of his left shoulder… from playing with explosives.
Physical traits: Red has very large eyes with long dark eyelashes. He has freckles which are somewhat hidden because of the rosacea on his cheeks, his beard, and the scars, and otherwise looks almost exactly like his mother; with a huge mouth and overbite that always looks vaguely like he’s grinning, a very long pointed nose, an unpronounced forehead, and big ears. His twin, looking more like Ford, looks almost nothing like him.
Voice: He always sounds very upbeat and happy, his voice is not very deep and sometimes he talks so fast that his words blend together. He does not have the country accent that Lorna May has, and likes to poke fun at her when she accidentally lets it slip too much (and you better believe he gets punched).
Clothing: More often than anything, Red wears dresses. Eli questions his fashion choices all the time, and there is really no reason, he just likes them. He usually wears a cowboy hat and either the scarf his mother made for Ford covering the lower half of his face, a surgical mask, or an old faded red bandana Lena gave him because he is self conscious about his scars. When it is too cold to wear a dress, he has black military boots he wears with jeans and either just a sweater as a shirt or a ragged fur-lined vest with any variety of shirt under.
Fashion Style/Lifestye: Cowboy in a pretty dress…
Weapon of Choice:  Bolt action hunting rifle (with a silencer) and a clunky old pump action shotgun.
Skills: Red is very good with a rifle and always enjoys hunting. He is extremely stealthy (when he wants to be, otherwise he can be just as reckless as his cousin), even choosing to mostly wear soft-soled sneakers to assist in his preferred combat method. He’s also able to run for pretty much forever and rarely gets tired, much like Lorna May. Very good with explosives, after many failed and painful trials. And he’s a fantastic cook, as long as what you’re hoping to eat is mostly meat.
Weaknesses: Way too emotional a lot of the time, easily gets his feelings hurt, relies on his brother too much. Also has bouts of anxiety like his dad.
Poor skills: Poor depth perception, super clumsy, easily distracted: he falls off of cliffs a lot. Good thing there are stimpaks, otherwise he’d pretty much have broken bones all the time. He’s also not very strong and therefore isn’t too great at hand to hand combat (though he would tell you otherwise). For some reason always thinks leaping off a tall building/mountain is the best way down instead of, y'know… stairs?
Affiliations: Vault 76 dwellers
Former Affiliations: None.
Enemies: None.
Neutral Affiliations: Responders.
Religion: Agnostic
Likes: His family, his brother especially, hunting, cooking, cars (for exploding), setting things on fire, playing banjo (though he isn’t that great), battling Lorna May,  climbing up the tallest things he can find and just admiring the view. And then jumping off.
Dislikes: Jolene and Ford have had their orchard since before the war, and Red’s very least favorite chore is always going out and picking the peaches. He would much rather go out with a pistol and shoot mole rats while Eli does the picking. He also isn’t a fan of snow. He was born in a nuclear winter, he’d be happy to never see snow again (it’s slightly better when Lena is around to enjoy it with).
Hates: His scars.
Friends: Lorna May Euler, Elijah Euler, Jimmy, Lena Riggs, Gilroy O’Niell, Ava (who he also used to have a crush on but… don’t tell Lena, she’s scary when she’s jealous), Daisy Wilson
Acquaintances: Other Vault dwellers he has come upon in his travels
Former friends: After the death of Alyce, Jolene became even more fiercely protective of her family. Elijah and Red were very rarely allowed to associate with outsiders until they were much older, unlike Lorna May,  so they didn’t meet many other humans before the Vault opened.
Enemies: Eli’s pet squirrel. He hates that thing. Plus Eli gives it more affection than he gives him…
Also Chester Sullivan, because he is terrifying.
Pets: None.
Personality: Red is energetic and mostly always happy, but he definitely wears his heart on his sleeve. Despite his very low charisma, he is not really that shy and has a hard time containing his feelings, and he will blurt things out without actually meaning to. He also is definitely an instigator and can pester people about things if he thinks it’s funny to. Despite growing up in complete solitude from other humans, he is very empathetic and always tries to help people even if it is definitely not a good idea to do so.
He is very expressive, loving and completely loyal to those he cares for. Because of his lack of previous socialization, however, he has absolutely no idea how to handle it when he has a crush on someone, and also becomes smitten nearly immediately after meeting them. Where ordinarily he is extremely affectionate to everyone, if he likes someone romantically he’s more of the awkward high-five/thumbs up instead of kiss kind of guy and would take a very long time before getting to anything more than that.
Favorite color: Though everyone assumes it is red because of his nickname, it’s actually pink and purple.
Favorite foods:  He makes some excellent opossum bacon. Also his Aunt Jolene’s pumpkin pie.
Favorite drinks: Mutfruit juice, Nuka Cola Quantum, coffee (not that he needs it), moonshine (which he makes himself).
Favorite Sweets: Blackberry cobbler, peach cobbler, pumpkin pie, just about any baked sweets and pastries.
_____________________________________
Other info: He later has three kids with Lena; their son, Landon Gabriel Adam Euler, and twin daughters, Lindsay Lee Alyce Euler and Winnebago “Winnie” Edsel Angela Euler.
By the time of Fallout 4, Red is still alive and completely ghoulified along with Ford.
Thanks as always @madddraws for the profile layout!

Snippet from my 2016 Depressed Mikey fanfic
This takes place after Raph's last panic attack over Mikey's most recent seizure.
Following the tag "pale sunlight fic" should lead to all the other snippets, which are being collected to become a huge fic.
****
Leonardo was having trouble meditating.
That hadn't happened in years.
A muscle in his cheek twitched.
His father's soft voice echoed in the chamber.
“I feel your exasperation, my son. Perhaps it's time for a break.”
Leo sighed and blinked, automatically rubbing his hands on his thighs. “The thing is, I know exactly why. And I know exactly why I need to relax and get past it.”
A small, tight pause, and Splinter's shining eyes met his, widening. “There is no ‘getting past’ a mental illness and a permanent disability, Leonardo. Not for your brother, certainly not for his family.”
He tensed, teeth grinding. “I know. I...I didn't mean...I mean, I meant for me and my mind and...it...that came out really wrong, Dad.”
“I understand your intent,” his father smiled.
Leo exhaled, feeling his face heat up. “I think...maybe...I'm scared?”
Splinter just tilted his head and nodded.
“I'm...afraid for Mikey, not of his depression or his seizures, but afraid that he'll be...too hindered as a ninja, as our clan mate, and it'll hurt the team and our missions, our entire dynamic…”
“Do you feel compelled to keep Michelangelo from joining you on missions, even going topside at all?”
Leo blinked. “A...a little. Aren't you? His episodes are completely uncontrollable and random, and even if we could find help that's not a therapist friend of April and Casey it's not like we could get prescription drugs and we wouldn't even know how they would affect him because--”
“I'm sure Donatello is more than willing to do heavy research,” his father said, “and perhaps Miss Gold - ah, Avalyn - can explain how her own antidepressants and anti-epilepsy drugs work for her personally, as she seems to have formed a strong bond with Michelangelo.  Plus, we do have a kind, generous police chief on our side who has access to medical needs.”
Leo shut his mouth. Did Splinter just wink?
He worked his jaw from side to side. All he wanted was for Mikey to be better. To be healthy again. But Casey and Ava kept saying this was a new normal and that it would take so much time and space and work, and would Avalyn need to be in their lives forever? She was just a student, she had her own life, she probably couldn't…
He remembered the day they had saved her from the burglary, Mikey joking as he held her to keep her from panicking. How every time they had their video chats his face lit up like the sun. How when she started actually visiting, he'd wiggle like a puppy. He never quite did that with April. He even made up new pet names.
Leo smirked. His little brother had a big crush.
“I just feel out of my depth and kind of helpless,” he shrugged. “This this isn't some bad guy we can punch, or...or an object to grab, it's nebulous and it's inside my brother's head. It's inside him, it's his brain. Raph's right, how do we fight an enemy like that?”
Sighing, Splinter shook his head and rested his hands on Leo's shoulders. “First of all, you must stop thinking that there even is an enemy. Disabilities are not a terrible fate, my son. They are part of life. Eventually, most everyone falls ill to a point where it cannot be cured. And a great deal of people acquire permanent disabilities whose syndromes can be well managed all their lives. Many people are born that way. You know this. Life is lived regardless of hindrances. Joy is lived in. We must constantly monitor our perceptions of one another as we grow and move about the world. Every individual has their own feeling of identity. We need to respect how they feel.”
Sitting back but still touching Leo, Splinter smiled softly. “I spoke with Avalyn this morning, while Michelangelo was resting from his seizure. She is quite proud of what and who she is, and I believe she has many things she could teach you.”
Feeling chastised, Leo nodded. Splinter pulled away and folded his hands.
“Michelangelo has always been extremely sensitive and in tune with his environment, and he may be picking up on your doubts. Do not let your concerns cloud your pure love. Help him mitigate his pain, soothe his fears. But do not overwhelm him, do not hover with anxiety that he cannot heal. It's not your place to try to cure.”
Leo licked his lips, wanting to smack himself. “I mean, there literally is no cure, anyway. Yeah. I feel childish.”
“You have ignorance,” Splinter said. “You lack the information and knowledge. Your own fears caused pain and you stumbled in your quest to understand what's been happening.”
Rubbing his neck, Leonardo grinned. “Think Raph's been doing this too?”
Splinter's eyes became distant. “Raphael is his own story. He has been very passionate and confused, lashing out, desperate and needy. Casey and Avalyn have been speaking with him.”
“I guess I haven't noticed...I've been caught up.”
“Yes, I know.”
Beginning to stand, Leo bowed. “Thank you, sensei. I think I can sort this out now. And I should definitely have my own chat with our new friend.”
Splinter grinned cheekily. “As Michelangelo once said of Casey, we should invite people over more often.”
Leo laughed, finally lifted.

Thirteen-year-old Abby and her father have just moved from a leaky old sailboat in California to an inherited mansion in South Carolina, and Abby does not fit in. This is the story of the summer adventures she shares with new best friend, Hollis, and two boys from their class rescuing an injured heron. But when school begins, Abby is shocked to learn that Hollis is a bullied outcast…who, pushed to the limit, takes her own life—a phenomenon known as bullycide. BFF attempts to portray that being targeted doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you, suicide is NOT the answer, and if you’re struggling, tell as many people as necessary until you get help. You are interesting and worth it.
Reviews:
"Both adult and teen readers will be moved by this poignant story and find it a valuable resource in discussing and countering bullying. Great for fans of Jennifer Niven's All the Bright Places, Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why."- BookLife by Publishers Weekly
“5 Stars!”- Readers’ Favorite
“BFF: A Story About Bullycide touches on the perils of teen depression, bullying, and suicide. Told in Bell’s lyrical and unique voice, this story is a compelling read for teens and parents of teens.”- Leigh Medeiros, Author of The 1-Minute Writer
“As a mom I was concerned about the appropriateness for my children, but upon completion of BFF found myself wanting all kids to read this to understand the gravity of their actions. Bell takes a subject that can be controversial and weaves a beautiful story. You will fall in love with the main character and be immersed in every page. I would recommend this book to everyone—adults and children alike!”- Anneliese Tomlinson, CFI and mother of two teenagers

250ish-word excerpt from BFF: A Story About Bullycide
By Lindsey G. P. Bell
Excerpt from Abby’s reflecting on Hollis’ suicide from the end of the Epilogue/book:
I never had another friend like Hollis. Though I think I sensed I never would on the first day when we shook hands. And when I think back, all I see in people like Lexie Cross, Ava Finn, and Leah Montgomery is the fear and emptiness that they were desperately trying to fight off by coming after us. There was nothing wrong with Hollis or me. We were the lucky ones, the ones who could have the time of our lives sitting up all night in the middle of nowhere waiting for a bird. And even if people thought we were ugly, fat, weird, disabled, too smart, too slow, too short, too tall, too poor, too freckled, too skinny, the “wrong” religion, the “wrong” color, the “wrong” sexual preference, the “wrong” gender, flat-chested, too booby, sexually active, hyperactive, or just plain annoying, we had each other. And if we had just stuck together, things might have ended differently.
There’s so much I wish I could go back and tell Hollis on that fateful night. At thirteen, school and Lexie felt like they would go on forever, but the older I got, the faster the days passed. I’ve been out of school now much longer than I ever had to be in it, and I’ve been able to fill my orbit with some really kind, adventurous, creative, funny people who understand and appreciate me.
There really have been countless thrill-and-three-quarters moments peppered into these many years, but the thing I’m most grateful for is the opportunity to share my story. I can’t undo the painful things that happened to me, but maybe by choosing to stick around I can use them to help somebody struggling down Hollis’s and my old path see that suicide is a mistake.
If only Hollis had told someone that she was considering it….
She would have loved all of this.
  About Lindsey G. P. Bell:
Tumblr media
Lindsey G. P. Bell’s life has been as exciting and full of adventure as one of her books.  Born to a father named Peter and a mother called Wendy, she was very nearly named Tinker Bell. It was the first of many bullets she would go on to dodge.
As a young child in Washington, D.C., her great loves were the Smithsonian Institution’s museums of Natural History and Air and Space. Ms. Bell’s earliest life dreams were to someday live in a natural history museum and fly airplanes.
Ms. Bell attended Pepperdine University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts.
While working in wildlife rescue, a friend introduced her to the now-late Grizzly Man, Timothy Treadwell. Tim and Ms. Bell began dating, and he invited her to join him camping with the wild brown bears, foxes, weasels, wolves and moose in the remote Alaskan wilderness. There, her love of seaplanes and all things natural shone. She was blessed to swim with wild bears, have mother bears (sows) nurse their cubs nearby (they purr!), and play something akin to Capture the Flag with red foxes. After spending portions of two summers in the wilderness with Tim, she embarked on three solo expeditions whereupon she’d spend her nights copiously journaling the day’s adventures. This felt like living in a natural history museum, and the discipline of writing daily led to penning her first children’s book.
Ms. Bell went on to earn her pilot’s license and sea-plane rating, and soon realized her true love lay in flying aerobatics (spins, loops, rolls…).
After dabbling in weathercasting, acting, and improv, Ms. Bell began poking the stand-up comedy bear. Though she enjoys writing the material more than performing it, she can still occasionally be found around Los Angeles at open mics.
In addition to BFF: A Story About Bullycide, she’s completed drafts of seven children’s books, a novella, and three non-fiction volumes detailing her Alaska expeditions.  Between 2004 – 2006 she co-wrote a screenplay about the late Grizzly Man with Rebecca Dmytryk. An article about it appeared in the November 16, 2006 edition of the Malibu Surfside News. Her spoof essay on The Lorax was published in the October 2013 edition of Writer’s Digest. And in 2019, her short story The Call, The Call of Duty, and The Call Home placed ninth (out of fifty finalists) in the Inspirational category of the Writer’s Digest Annual Contest. She is currently working on a thriller.

Chapter four: Alex's responsibility by OrangeLetters88~
Tumblr media
Clarence and Dr. Carol sit together in the medical bay. "So let me get this right...so you were declared the apostle of existence? A new queen is coming?"
Clarence shows the key he was given from the Crystal Queen. "I mean there is a flipping fairy bouncing around the castle right now!"
"Hmmm...that is fair I guess...Christian carries the eye thing too, but he must touch the pommel to retrieve his consciousness?" Dr. Carol asks taking a drag on his cigarette.
"Are you literally not letting anyone in here?" Steel asks opening the door to see Clarence.
"Nope I am not...too much shit going on for me right now." Dr. Carol says slightly irritated.
"Should you really be smoking in here?" Steel chides Dr. Carol.
"This is my domain, please let me be..."
Steel rolls her eyes striding over to view Christian who is covered despite his eyes slightly open. "He has been un-moving for days. Sadie has been kidnapped back by Samuel...what else could be worse?"
"Looks like Alex's group is going to get bigger at this point..." Dr. Carol states looking at the door sighing to himself unable think much.
"You know Christian stated before how Alex felt different to him? This must be part of the Crystal Queens plan. I just have a feeling." Steel replies.
"Like this was meant for Christian to move forward as a warrior of the pentagram?" Clarence responds. "But who are the others?"
"I will guess we will learn..." Dr. Carol chimes.
Ava pops in the room out of nowhere. They look at her in her more childlike form; she walks over to Christian where Steel is seated. "Master is trapped, maybe if he can communicate with the pommel itself he can come out of it."
"Is this a living sword?" Steel questions Ava.
"I can help you, but somehow we have to connect to Christian and find the pommel, but best bet is through his master Alex." Ava explains. "Alex should be able to find the pommel's spirit...but Steel is connected to Alex so we might be able to find them all."
"Me? I am connected to Alex?" Steel inquires blushing.
"You are who he goes too. I can connect you to his heart. Let's meditate please." Ava sits down. She touches Steel's hand; she falls into a deep sleep leaning against Ava's shoulder.
Their surroundings are only darkness. Ava takes Steel's hand, they slowly walk together down what seems like a really long walk way. They see a dungeon dimly lit with Alex blindfolded. He could feel their presence. "Steel, why are you here?" Alex asks shocked.
"Christian is in coma Alex...please help me and his fairy Ava find Christian and his pommel!" Steel says grabbing for his hand. Alex hesitates at first then decides to take her hand pulling his spirit through the veil.
"Christian is in trouble...I can't just let him suffer. I am his master!" Alex says taking off his blindfold tossing it to the ground.
"Are you okay there?" Steel asks concerned.
"They make me work hard sometimes, but I am mainly in the dungeons so I am fine, but what is this about a pommel?"
"Christian's soul is lost. If we can find the pommel then the Crystal Queen can resurrect him and the sword. They share the same consciousness."
"Wait...Christian has obtained the book of nowhere??" Alex replies amazed about to cry, Steel gently pats his shoulder.
"He is growing up it seems, but he didn't want to get it at first. He is worried sick about you...he needed to get the book to go to participate in the games here soon at Samuel's, but his sword and the book was stolen before he could fully merge."
"You have got to be kidding me..."
"He is in the medical bay as we speak."
"Hold on to your hats you two! I am locating the pommel first!" Ava shouts excited. They pass through something like a warp. They could feel their bodies shift under their feet. "This is my other self. Her name is Ria, I cannot exist without her, but she is now in coma too."
They land in a meadow of flowers. "Christian was fated for a solider of the pentagram. I understand now." Alex says aloud to himself.
"Yes he was, but also savior to slaved kind. He can now null witches spells as well disable them from making the symbols ever again. In the deep future he will be side with sapphire queen's warrior." Ava illustrates. She notices he is becoming sad. "Do not worry Alex; you have many journeys together before anything like that happens. Her sapphire queen will not awaken for decades."
"Anyways what are we looking at?" Alex asks as they saunter up to the spirit of the pommel lying over a sword.
Ava glides over to Ria picking her up. "It's no good...we have to look for Christian's spirit first. They bonded the sword. Samuel knows better."
"So that's why! Ava what is going to happen if we cannot find Christian?" Steel challenges.
"Then we need to go to Samuel's retrieve the pommel in person...there is no other way. Steel will have to bring Christian to star events since she has a head book, but let's see Christian first if we can revive him! Hold your hats again!"
"This is it! Thank you for your consciousness Alex!" Ava shrieks laughing. Alex stunned how everything is barren wasteland in Christian's conscious environment. "Remember this is literally only his mental scape. Whatever you talked about last time hurt him."
Christian sits on his knees looking up a gray sky. He is covered in dried rose vines. The only color in the room was the blue fractals in his eyes shining. He is speaking un-readable words. The vines seem to be living.
"I did this to him?" Alex asks Ava. "I just...I didn't know at the time he would take it so hard."
"Sometimes we don't fight it when we feel there is no hope. You are his hope since he became a vampire. Alex words are powerful things. Sometimes we need them to fight."  Ava implies Alex lack of self-confidence. "If you are not fighting then how do you expect Christian to fight this?"
Alex makes his way over to Christian. He tries to remove the vines, but is pricked. "It's okay I am here now. I need you Christian! I need you to fight this!"
The more he would pluck the vines, the more they would grow in its place. His hands covered in pricks from pulling them off Christian. He is still un-moving. He dips to ground trying to take them out from the root.
They ensnare Alex squeezing him. Some reason it activates his slave seal. He cries out as the volts consume him. "If I give up I won't ever get to see you become a knight of the sapphire queen...I know about Sadie who you proclaimed your wife Christian!" Alex grunts through pain. He stretches his arms standing firmly trying to fend against the vines crawling up his arms and legs trying to stop him.
"I won't give up any more please! Please Christian listen to me! The pommel is bounded, you need to break it! You need to free Sadie!"
Steel wants to help, but Ava stops her. "This is Alex's problem...not yours."
The vines recede from Alex allowing him movement. He runs up to Christian once again. He starts to tear them out one by one. "Even if you hate me forever...sometimes we have moments of weakness...it...it was wrong of me tear you down like that...I always forget you all look up to me on what to do next. You don't know what to do and I should be teaching you!"
Christian's eyes start to water, tears stream down his face; the vines start climb up his face slowly. Roses start to grow; the vines start to turn green. "Christian forgive me so I can start to fight where I am trapped as well! Were friends, we could be siblings unmistakably...you always have my back..."
Christians hands start move removing the vines himself to grab Alex's hands. They slowly descend into the ground. Alex hugs Christian causing a meadow of flowers to appear in front of them. "I wanted to give up Alex...I couldn't take it after I thought you just wrote me off..."
Alex embraces Christian, his face reddens with tears. "I am not giving up anymore...I was selfish...I hurt you most of all..."
Christian collapses" I need to admit...I pushed the pommel away when Sadie had me touch it...now what will happen to me?"
Ava appears over their head separating them. "Ria will die and you will die if you don't accept the pommel. You must be feeling drained right now and that's because she was fated for you...I beg you please accept Ria so she will awake..."
Christian pauses a moment before answering. "Take to me Ria..." Christian replies looking at Alex. Ava jumps up and down happily.
"All's aboard who is coming aboard!" She yells bringing them all back to Ria who is in a deep sleep. Christian moves forward walking calmly to the sleeping Ria. He touches her shoulder.
Hey eyes gently open. "Hey...look I am sorry about before. I know you got upset, but I am ready for accepting you and Ava. Please forgive me.."
She smiles at him. "I chose you for your kindness and I still feel you are able to wield me with honor. Please accept my grace. For now I can awaken you, but the real power will be given when you find me. Thank you..."
She closes her eyes as she clasps both her hands around his right hand. "It is time to wake and find me Christian..."
He feels immense power surge through him. They both disappear. "What happened to Christian?" He asks Ava.
"This is where you and Steel must go now." Ava intertwines her fingers between Alex's. "You are a vampire equipped with everything needed to leave, but I understand if you wait for Christian soon to go to Samuel's...please don't feel self-pity anymore. Vepar is inside you waiting for you to beckon him...you can do this Alex."
"Yes..."
Steel awakes first darting over to Christian's bedside. "Christian..." his eyes open peaking up at Steel. He sits up dizzily. Only one eye is glowing now.
Ava walks over to Christian bowing. "Together we are Ava-Ria, my humble master. I am whole now. I hope you will be able to get the best use of me." She transforms into an older adult version of herself. She leans into the medical bed to kiss him. "Your eye is now stable master."
He blushes. "I am so tired though, how long have I been without blood?"
Clarence comes over with a small bag of crystalized blood in the shape of a flower. "You should apparently try this."
Christian bites into the flower all the sudden feeling everything surging through him. "What is this? It tastes like nothing I ever had before."
"The church got destroyed and I had to walk through a long ass tunnel to get back home. This is a gift from the Crystal Queen even after death." Clarence replies. "But Sadie was kidnapped when I pushed her out. Somehow people knew we were there."
"Samuel will be getting the ass kicking of his life." Christian says pounding his fists together.

How Live Caption Maker Ava Is Taking A ‘Path To Self-Empowerment’ In Making Video Calls Accessible To The Hearing Impaired

How Live Caption Maker Ava Is Taking A ‘Path To Self-Empowerment’ In Making Video Calls Accessible To The Hearing Impaired
The Ava logo.
Update 12/10: Reworked the language in the last paragraph to indicate Duchemin has published his blog post on his company’s news.
Ava on Thursday announced significant updates to its live-captioning software that the company says will make virtual meetings more accessible to those in the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Additionally, the company announced they’ve raised $4.5 million in new venture-capital funding, led by firms Initialized Capital and Khosla Ventures, bringing the total amount of funding to date to $6.5 million.
In a press release, Ava shared two marquee new features rolling out today: Ava Closed Captions and Ava Scribe. Closed Captions provides real-time, automated artificial intelligence-based captioning to internet-based meetings on the Mac, Windows, and in a web browser. Meanwhile, Scribe does the same real-time captioning but adds another layer: users can request a professional scribe to supplement the computer-driven transcription with a human element. Ava claims this combination of human and machine gives users instant access to captions that are 99% accurate.
In a world that continues to mire amidst the coronavirus pandemic, good social-distancing practices have dictated that nearly everyone needs to work and study from home. This means people have had lessons in accessibility as a concept: finding ways to accessibly adapt their workflows such that they can remain productive and sociable remotely. Chief among these new ways of working is taking meetings and connecting with loved ones over video-centric tools like Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, and WebEx. While this software, particularly Zoom, have come to redefine what “getting together” means, one significant-yet-undervalued disadvantage is their inaccessibility to people who are hearing impaired. For the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, the lack of adequate captioning, if any, can mean entire conversations are lost because she or he cannot understand what a speaker is saying. At that point, Zoom isn’t so great.
As a child of Deaf adults who has experienced firsthand the hardships of conversing with family over holiday meals, it is this inaccessibility that led Ava co-founder and CEO Thibault Duchemin to develop Closed Captions and Scribe. In essence, Closed Captions and Scribe’s raison d’être is to bridge the “digital divide,” so to speak, between someone with a hearing impairment and someone with hearing.
“A paradigm shift has to happen [towards] autonomy and independence,” Duchemin said in a recent interview with me. “The Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities are empowering themselves to make accessibility happen themselves, instead of expecting others to do it.”
Some 450 million people worldwide who are Deaf and hard-of-hearing—5% of the global population—are being denied their fundamental right to access basic information, according to Duchemin. Rarely are accommodations made for job interviews, classes, and social media outlets like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Compounding the problem, he added, is lip-reading accomplishes only so much; only about a quarter of information is understood. This is why captioning and sign language interpreters are so vital to public service—here in California, it’s heartening to see Governor Gavin Newsom deliver his daily Covid-19 press conferences with an ASL interpreter off to the side. The updates on case count and public safety measures are too important for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities to be left out.
Duchemin said he and his team “took the path to self-empowerment” to bringing accessible solutions to Covid-wrought problems. He lamented the lack of societal empathy for accessibility, frustrated at how diversity and inclusion has become such a bellwether amongst proponents—and yet people with disabilities are often forgotten.
He said while disability advocates have been banging the inclusion drum forever, it’s necessary to take up the cause yourself because the change is so glacially slow. “At some point, you just can’t take it anymore,” Duchemin said. “You say stop. You stop counting on companies, governments, and society to change fast enough.”
The moral? Ableism, confronted far less, runs just as rampant as racism and sexism.
Privilege is not solely a matter of skin color or gender. Privilege is also about the ability to be non-disabled—to move, to communicate, to do things “normally.” In Ava’s case, privilege is having the ability to hear what others are saying on a Zoom call.
The urgency to take matters into their own hands meant demand for Ava “skyrocketed” as the company worked to make video calling accessible to all. The Ava Free plan was altered such that there is an unlimited time allotment in perpetuity.
“The coronavirus has hit hard Deaf and hard-of-hearing people on communication matters,” Duchemin said. “With everybody wearing masks outside, it has been impossible to read lips. This accelerated the numbers of Deaf and hard-of-hearing people trying speech-to-text apps like Ava for the first time.”
Importantly, Ava is cross-platform; there are desktop apps for macOS, Windows, and the web, as well as mobile ones for iOS and Android. Duchemin said this “inclusivity,” as he coined it, is crucial because other companies like Google and Microsoft have siloed their live-captioning tech to work only within their respective ecosystems.
Feedback from beta-testers on Closed Captions and Scribe has been overwhelmingly positive. Duchemin said there’s “been a lot of surprise” to Ava’s capabilities since testing began in August. “After years and years of using makeshift solutions, an all-in-one-click captioner in your pocket [via the mobile app] can come as a shock,” he said.
Duchemin added there’s been a lot of excitement around the products, and the circumstances surrounding the virus meant the team “didn’t want to delay too much” in shipping because they saw the immediacy of the software’s usefulness to customers.
At a macro level, Ava’s technology is a testament to how artificial intelligence and machine learning can be applied to technology in such a way that truly changes and enriches people’s lives. The same can be said for Apple’s work in building People Detection for iOS and Google building the Look to Speak app for Android. Practical applications for AI and ML will only grow over time, as the technology matures and especially as wearable tech like AirPods (and more) continue their rise in prominence.
Duchemin has written a blog post wherein he explains his feelings about self-empowerment when it comes to accessibility, and how his company’s ethos strives to provide people tools with which to harness that power. In context of the pandemic, Duchemin writes the onset of Covid has “poured gasoline on prior accessibility fires.”
You can learn more about Ava’s mission and its technology on their website.

***WARNING: SPOLIERS AND A SUPER SUPER LONG COMMENT!***
I loved this episode, it was an emotional roller coaster. Although this post is going to include thoughts on the whole series in general, mainly on Javier’s relationship with Kate and with David and Gabe too. Also just opinions of the characters individually. (It’s going to be a long post, sorry). The ending I got was Javier, Kate, Gabe and Conrad surviving (thank god) and David being bitten so Gabe has to shoot him to prevent him from turning. I chose to save Tripp in episode 4, therefore Ava came along with the group before she died, which was pretty much the only scene I didn’t like in this episode, it was very sudden and I think my game glitched so it cut some dialog or really small scenes so it was over very quickly.
It’s sad because I did like Ava and it was a hard decision on who to choose to be shot (when it came to that scene in ep 4, I didn’t choose either the first time and then ended Javi ended up getting shot lol, I DIDN’T WANT EITHER OF THEM TO BE KILLED AH and I was so shocked when Joan ended up killing the opposite person you wanted to save, such bullshit).
Anyway, on Kate and Javi’s relationship, when I started playing this season I was completely against the intimate/romantic relationship between them, every time some dialogue came up where you could flirt back with Kate, or kiss her or whatever, I didn’t choose those options and when it came to either rejecting her or sharing her feelings, I rejected her. She’s married to David, like you don’t go for your brothers wife? They’re brother and sister in law, bit incest? What about Gabe too? Bit weird for his uncle to start dating his farther’s wife? Plus I knew that David would NOT be happy when he found out, I kept rejecting her so David didn’t have any reason to want to fucking kill Javier and I always saw David’s good side so I wanted to be a good brother to him.
All that changed though when I watched a YouTuber’s Let’s Play of the episode. I don’t know, as soon as I saw them kiss I was just like yes. Instant support. Maybe it was Kate’s awkward confession, and her little excited, “oh my god! Really!?” reaction like she actually couldn’t believed Javi shared her feelings? Ahh it was just too cute. I went back and replayed the season, keeping all other choices the same expect the romance between them. It got me thinking, Javi and Kate have been on the road together for years, they thought David was dead, it was more than hinted that David was an abusive husband as well and Kate was really unhappy with him. They’ve been raising Marianna and Gabe all this time like they were practically their own children and have you seen the way the interact with each other? They have a great dynamic, Javi is so sarcastic, he’s got great banter and Kate can handle it and give it back, they’re always making each other laugh and smile and feel better and clearly they’re just way better suited for each other than Kate is with David. I chose the option for them to kiss after their reunion at the junkyard when I replayed and all Marianna says is “Gross.” Like she’s not at all bothered or angry her step mum is smooching her uncle? Because she can see how much they love and care for each other. Plus it’s a fucking zombie apocalypse, if you love someone, go for it, because you don’t know when your last moment will be with someone, no matter how fucked up the situation is, they were both really really happy in that moment at the junkyard and in the van, plus at the end of the episode too.
This brings me to David and Javi’s relationship. Apart from the Kate thing, I still tried to be a good brother to him, I took his hand after the fight when their dad died, I supported him in his decision to go to the army and promised to watch over Kate and and the kids. I hugged him in the quarantine cell, I stuck by all his plans (not to mention about Marianna & to stay and fight in Richmond, not siding with Kate), I even shot Joan for him. David was a fucking arsehole I admit that, but I did have a little soft spot for him, I always wanted him to redeem himself and for him to show the good person I believed he was inside, I get really attached to the characters, and I think the main way to enjoy the walking dead game is to not focus too much on the lack on character development with a few of the characters or the crappy pacing, even the bad dialogue selections sometimes. I try to put myself in each and everyone of the characters shoes and feel what they are feeling and try and understand.
So when it came to the scene when David found out about Javi and Kate’s relationship and started beating up Javi and was trying to kill him, I chose Javi to say “I love you” 3 times. The final “I love you brother” absolutely broke me. During this fight I was literally crying my eyes out, I could not stop crying, it was so intense and so emotional, it hurt me so much inside because Javi does love his brother and deep down, David loves Javier too. I started crying after the first “I love you”, because of David’s reaction to Javi saying that. He looked so shocked, like he couldn’t believe he heard that from him, which leads me to believe that was the first time Javier ever told David that he loved him. What makes it even more sad is that was the last time he ever said he loved him and also the last thing Javier ever said to David was “I love you brother”.
Other things that made me cry even harder during that scene, when Gabe rushed in to try to get his Dad to stop and David just hits him with the wrench. Like could you imagine your father doing that to you? Especially how much Gabe respected and loved his Dad, Gabe stuck up for David and was on his side throughout the whole season, and then to have everything you thought about your Dad to be proven wrong? After all that, he still chose to go with David because he is his Dad. He is family, he is blood. It’s heartbreaking. Also the little notification that you get if you choose to say I love you three times “you kept your promise to be a good brother”, like holy fuck shit. There I go, I was already broken in half, now I’m broken into quarters. Fuck my life, I was emotionally unstable.
I know a lot of people hate Gabe, just like they hated Duck in season 1 and I just don’t understand why? For both of them. Duck was just a special little boy, he didn’t understand everything was going on, in my opinion I think he had some sort of mental disability, or he was just really dumb who knows. But he was just a little kid, who talked too much and made bad decisions but how was he supposed to know what would happen? Being so young, so naive, he was such an energetic optimistic boy, ignorance is bliss they say right?
Anyway, enough about Duck, back to Gabe. Gabe was 14 years old, he was growing up and going through a really tough time, he has to deal with puberty, hormones, mood swings, testosterone levels are soaring, he wants to grow up. He doesn’t want to a little kid anymore. But the thing is he doesn’t know how. And imagine how hard it would be in a zombie apocalypse to do that. He thinks he’s saying and doing the right thing but he’s not, he wants to prove himself capable, he wants to prove that he’s smart and he can fight and protect himself and protect others, he believes he can. No one else does and so obviously that makes him frustrated that no one will take him seriously. It’s especially hard for him because his role models are Javier and David, two badass, lean mean fighting machines. He wants to be like them and he wants to be like them now but he can’t. Bless Gabe. He was an annoying little shit yeah but he’s a good annoying little shit. It’s all about seeing things from his point of view, imagining if you were him.
Which leads me to Gabe and Clem’s relationship. Disregarding the crush they both have on each other for a second, pretend that doesn’t exist. I love Clem and Gabe’s relationship. Oh my god, how can you not? I’m sorry but how long has Clem gone without a friend her age? Since fucking forever that’s how long. The only kids she’s ever been with is Duck and Sara throughout the entire series. Clem has been through so much shit, she’s been through hell, she’s lost Lee, Kenny, Luke, AJ, all the most important people to her throughout the series, she’s the toughest little girl in the world, she was forced to grow up so much quicker than she had to. Lee taught her to shoot a gun at 8 years old okay. She’s more intelligent and strong and brave and mature than anyone ever has to be at 14 years old, if it weren’t for her appearance you would think Clementine was a fully grown adult. She raised AJ, a toddler, thought of herself as a mother, a real mother to AJ and she’s just still a kid herself.
This is why I fully support her friendship with Gabe, in the van and they were playing euchre together, Clem just got to be a normal teenage girl for a couple of minutes having fun and joking with a teenage boy. Like Kate said it’s just so normal? It’s nice to see, and I can’t remember who said this in the game but “life doesn’t mean much without people you can relate to”, Clem and Gabe relate to each other, they’re in the same boat, Clem understands Gabe and makes him feel better as Gabe does with Clem. I’m sure all of us know how it feels not to be understood and when someone comes a long and shows you that they do understand it’s a relief.
Back to the crushing part between the two, it’s again NORMAL AND FUCKING CUTE! It’s a little harmless crush, of course they’re going to have a crush on each other, it’s the first teen girl Gabe has ever seen since the outbreak, and Clem is really pretty and nice, of course Gabe is going to have a crush on her. It made me smile at the end when Javi was like to Clementine “you know the guy has a crush on you right” and he was all like “oh my gosh you have a crush on him too!!” and then Clem got all embarrassed and flustered and exclaimed “I DO NOT!”, again this is so funny and just adds a bit of lightheartedness and normalcy to the game, yes they’re in the middle of a zombie apocalypse but characters get to be happy once in a while and just pretend that world hasn’t gone to hell. All in all, loved the season, especially loved this episode! Phew what a rant, you have reached the end, props if you read all of it.
