Firstly, sorry it took me so long to see and respond to these. Secondly— I know, right????

@julia980 I didn’t make it the final episode. Hell, I couldn’t even finish out season four. I came close, but just couldn’t do it, I kind of decided everything ended with the last ep of season three and the rest is blechhh

@dirtyriver 100% agree!! It’s not getting ships together that kills shows, it’s assuming that the viewer was only in it for the Big Kiss or the Prelude to Sex or whatever! Sure, we all eat that shit up and it’s a huge part of it, but it’s so lazy to think there’s nowhere to go after getting a shop together. Uh, why not explore the whacky dynamics of a pair of people who are clearly star crossed (if we’ve watched x number of seasons of a show waiting for them to admit feels for each other), that’s a big change and there’s sure to be shenanigans involved. That worked for Bones, as I recall. I think I watched most of that show, even after they got together. What I hate is will they won’t they followed by eternal maybe (the x-files) or will they won’t they followed by on again off again (battlestar galactica). Dammit, Glenn, why couldn’t you just commit to the bit! (I know the actors’ egos were a factor, but I read that Cybill really objected pretty vehemently to the whole Walter thing but the writers were firm about it)

Just finished s4 ep 12 of moonlighting and like. I know I say something along these lines after every single episode of this show but what in the cinnamon toasted fuck was that

Never in my life have I sympathized with any human beings more than I sympathize with the folks who watched this shit in real time in 1987 and had to endure this jack fuckery. I literally cannot imagine the screaming I would have done if my ass had waited around through weeks of reruns for stunts like this. Any of yall who did this the first time around are my heroes because I am losing my will over here holy god. Did you break your tv sets? Rip up the tv guide? I felt the ghost of Rage Quitting past as soon as the episode ended like it was imprinted onto the reels from y’all’s original agony lmfao

Random Pulp Thought

OK, I've tried posting this twice today, here's hoping third time's the charm.

This is a link to a Kickstarter for Thrilling Adventure Yarns 2025, an anthology of neo-Pulp stories, edited by the great Robert Greenberger*.

I previously backed the third volume and of course got the two previous volumes. I thoroughly enjoyed the first, am slowly making my way through the second, and friends, I cannot understate how much I WANT this.

I'm really hoping we get all the way to the $16,000 Stretch Goal, so it will be fully illustrated.

By the late 1950s, DC Comics (then known as National) was showing the world that superheroes could make a comeback in comics.  Archie Comics took note and decided to jump on the bandwagon.

Archie Comics, originally known as MLJ, had published numerous superhero comics at the beginning of the Golden Age.  The company hired Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1959 to get the superhero ball rolling again.  One of Archie/MLJ’s original characters - the Shield  - was dusted off and brought to life again, joined by the Fly, a new superhero.

The Shield, America’s first flag-wearing superhero, who pre-dated Captain America by several months, was an established character with a respectable run during the Golden Age  However, the creative team presented an all-new character, with new powers and abilities, as the Shield.  There are several theories as to why this was done, but most probable is that the same formula had worked with DC’s Flash and Green Lantern, so why not for the Shield as well?

Strangely, the hero’s comic did not mention the Shield in the title, but was instead called The Double Life of Private Strong.  That’s like retitling Superman into The Adventures of Clark Kent When He Takes Off His Glasses.

Speaking of Superman, DC Comics was none too thrilled with the new Shield/Private Strong.  This was because Lancelot Strong’s origin - orphaned son of a brilliant scientist who gains super-powers (many similar to Superman’s) and is raised by a kindly couple on a farm - was very similar to the Man of Steel’s.  DC threatened legal action, and Archie shut down The Double Life of Private Strong after only two issues.

The character made a few small appearances in The Fly’s book, but soon disappeared.  Archie brought back all of the MLJ superheroes, including the original Shield, in the mid-1960s during the superhero boom, but the Private Strong version of the Shield was left behind.

He finally returned as Lancelot Strong, alongside the Shield, in the 1983 series The Mighty Crusaders.  Lancelot Strong was soon killed off, and as far as I know the character has never been used again.  That’s a shame, as he was a result of one of the last collaborations between Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.

UPDATE: Thanks to @dirtyriver​ for pointing out a mistake I had made in the original post, where I mistakenly stated that the Fly was a revived character like the Shield.

That’s what happens when I try to do three different things at the same time while writing posts.

Maus banned by the McMinn County School Board

“I’m kind of baffled by this,” Art Spiegelman, the author of “Maus,” told CNBC in an interview about the unanimous vote by the McMinn board to bar the book, which is about his parents, from continuing to be used in the curriculum.

“It’s leaving me with my jaw open, like, ‘What?’” said Spiegelman, 73, who only learned of the ban after it was the subject of a tweet Wednesday – a day before Holocaust Remembrance Day.

He called the school board “Orwellian” for its action.

Spiegelman also said he suspected that its members were motivated less about some mild curse words and more by the subject of the book, which tells the story of his Jewish parents’ time in Nazi concentration camps, the mass murder of other Jews by Nazis, his mother’s suicide when he was just 20, and his relationship with his father.

“I’ve met so many young people who ... have learned things from my book,” said Spiegelman about “Maus.”

Begging, of course, the question: what kind of people don't want kids to learn about the Holocaust..?

There are eleventy thousand projects about Agatha Christie's missing days so now can I get a film about how at 40 she took up with a 26-year-old archaeologist, swam with him in her pink undies, and married him? If you're not familiar with the story, after her divorce from husband #1, a jerkface who basically couldn't stand being around all the sad because Agatha was grieving her mother's death, Agatha traveled to Iraq to visit the Woolleys, archaeologist pals. Max Mallowan was one of their young staff members. The Woolleys sent Agatha out for a tour of the area with Max as a guide. They had ADVENTURES. (Swam half-naked, slept in a jail. As you do.) Then, when all of them were in Athens, Agatha learns that her beloved only child is basically at death's door in England. Cue frantic mother, rushing to make arrangements. She's so addled she sprains her ankle BADLY. Max is all, "No worries. I GOT YOU. Here are all your tickets and BTW I'm coming with you because you're hobbling and I am Just That Guy." On the train there are mishaps and he ends up saving the day A Lot. After Agatha gets home to find her daughter recuperating (Yay!) Max comes for a visit. Meets the daughter, the dog, the companion. One night, he taps on Agatha bedroom door and says, "Oh, hey. We should totally get married." Agatha is GOBSMACKED. This is just awesome pal Max. She protests he's too young. He doesn't care. He wants HER. She asks daughter, dog, and companion. Everybody says, "PUT A RING ON THAT BOY." So she did. And for years they traveled out to Iraq each year for him to dig while she sat under a parasol, writing. Max was knighted, Agatha made a dame--each had their own knightly honors. THE END. So, I'm BEGGING you, stop giving us sad, shitcanned, cheated on Agatha, and give us adventuresome, seizing-life-by-the-throat Agatha. We deserve her. The images posted by Tumblr user @‌dirtyriver are a montage of old photographs of Agatha and Max. The first four photographs show them on archaeological voyages, suitably hatted against the sun in period clothing. The first photo shows them at a dig, the second on a ship, the third astride donkeys (or mules) in bright sunlight surrounded by some people (possibly African, maybe Egyptian, from their features and dress), and the fourth shows them next to some kind of masonry-lined polygonal-shaped opening in the ground (a well, an open tomb or the entrance to an underground chamber perhaps?) with ruins and dense grassy overgrowth in the background.

The fifth photograph shows a more relaxed, middle-aged Agatha and Max, still outdoors, but in a colder setting. Both are wearing tweedy-looking coats over layers of clothing. Agatha is smiling brightly at the camera while Max is focused on something off to the side with a pipe in his half-smiling mouth, set below a black mustache. While they are standing slightly apart, Max is leaning noticeably toward Agatha.

The sixth and last photograph of the series shows Agatha and Max in old age, posing semi-formally while standing on a gravel path beneath a planted arbor. Max is looking directly at the camera, holding the leash of a small black dog in front of them. His mustache is white here. Although his suit looks quite formal, it is a little untidy and shapeless, and he leans into Agatha by his side even as both of his hands are clasped around the dog leash handle. Agatha, also looking directly at the camera, has her right hand tucked into the crook of Max’s left elbow. She is wearing a stylish, loose-fitting shift dress in a heavy fabric, with a long chunky necklace down its front. Both Agatha and Max have an aspect of calm and contentment here.
