Every time I look down, it’s like little pieces of sky, everywhere. Staring back at me. Heard this today. Died. One of these girls is missing her best friend. And... One of these girls was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer by a optometrist, ignored by three doctors, was diagnosed and put on standard protocol by an oncologist, sent home and put on hospice on day 2 of diagnosis, suffered 12 months of meds, and pokies, and nausea, loss of speech and movement with a perfectly working aware brain, oh... and she died in my arms. Slowly. Difference? Luck? Ignorance? Fate? All three? I’d like to think my niece and daughter are worth more than either. But they aren’t. Sadly. And I only hug one now. And I can only dream about the other. Reaching out. Stating back at me. #katherinethebrave #dipg #lovesandkisses #seeyounexttime 💛😘🌈🎗 https://www.instagram.com/p/BzWIyWupxEb/?igshid=1363z4399ftzt

MoreS2SL Preview(s)!
It’s that time of year again! For those of you who aren’t aware, @mores2sl is the continuation of what was once called Smut 2 Save Lives. It is a charity collection of fanworks published annually to raise funds and awareness for DIPG, a rare and usually deadly form of childhood cancer. The collection’s charity of choice is Hope for Caroline, but you don’t have to donate to them.  All it takes is a $10 (that’s an equivalent to ten USA dollars) donation to either Hope for Caroline, or to a non profit cancer research group of your choice, and you receive access to the entire MS2SL collection.
I have contributed stories to the collection for the past two years and intend to do so again this year. Cancer in general sucks, and sometimes it feels like if you live long enough, you’re going to know someone who fights with it. For me, I had a teacher, a band director, in junior high who was pretty much the only reason I got out of bed in the mornings and went to school. He was energetic and caring, empathetic and encouraging. He was also slowly dying of cancer. The worst of it occurred once I’d already moved on to high school, but I never forgot him and when one of his last requests was to have the town’s high school marching band escort him to the cemetery, I was one of the first to volunteer. How could I not?
It’s gotten a little closer to home this past year, as my Mom was diagnosed with rectal cancer earlier this year. It’s been a painful struggle and she just finished her final chemo treatment this past week. We won’t know for another month if the rounds of chemo and radiation worked or if she’ll be facing a highly invasive surgery. My Mom has been the rock in our family for decades and watching her fight this thing was both humbling and horrifying. I’ve never seen her so scared. She said something to me one day when I accompanied her to chemo and we were in a large room with five other people all undergoing some kind of chemo therapy. She said, “It’s easier to accept when they’re older, but when they’re so young...” she nodded towards the young woman in the chair just next to hers. She couldn’t have been older than 25, and that’s frightening enough. To battle cancer when you’re still a child? Unimaginable. These are the reasons I contribute.
For this year, we have something exciting! Here’s a brief preview of the Everlark story I’ll be writing, featuring race car driving Katniss and Peeta as a mechanic. It will be rated at least M, probably E though because it’s me.
9000 R.P.M.
SUMMARY: Stuck in a dead end town and a dead end job, Katniss takes a gamble with the one thing she got out of her divorce -- a beat up sports car turned racer. She was always the better driver anyways. With a little help from a mechanic with blue eyes and golden hands, she turns that gamble into a chance for a better life for her and her daughter. But racing is still a boys' club and the road is never easy for a single mom.
In the morning she wakes up and her mother is already feeding Raven. She gives Katniss a once over and shakes her head. Katniss scowls at the judgement, kisses her daughter, and fixes her own damn breakfast.
“It was your first race back since Raven was born,” her mother says and Katniss stiffens, then relaxes as her mother’s words sink in. A soft kiss to her forehead and Katniss breaks into tears. “Oh baby girl, don’t cry.”
Her mother holds her as she cries it all out and as they rock and hold onto each other while Raven smashes her cereal to dust. Katniss slowly calms. Each tear leaves more room for resolve.
“I’m gonna take care of her, Mama. Raven’s gonna have a good life. We’re gonna get out of this shit hole where everyone knows Gale cheated on me but I’m the one they call a slut. We’re gonna live in a nice house and Prim’s going to college and you’re never scrubbing another toilet or shelling out drugs again.”
“Alright, baby girl. That’s your goal, then we’ll make it happen. Just keep at it.”
AND! Because the amazing ladies over at @mores2sl have decided to try something different, should you donate $20 instead of $10, you will get access to the 2017 and 2016 collections as well. Why is this important you ask? Well because some writers (*cough cough ME*) never publicly posted their contributions to last year’s collection. So if you’ve been curious or wanting to read mine, here’s another chance to do so. It’s the first installment in what’s planned to be a trilogy, if I can ever stop getting distracted with other stories. ;-)

SUMMARY: With all the empty space between planets and stars, one would think that two galaxies colliding is a fairly peaceful process. What if it’s not? What if life complicates the process as once distant planets become neighbors? Populations of species vanish. Others colonize new worlds. And some pick up arms against fellow living organisms as resources shift and change, become scarce. And humans...we take war with us everywhere we go…
Meridia: A planet caught between strictly adhered to ancient rituals and customs, and the questions and progress that inevitably follow scientific advancements, the people of Meridia have been fighting a war to protect their sovereignty and that of their neighboring systems for over sixty years. Peeta Mellark, one of three Crown Princes vying for the throne and the future General of Meridia returns home after sustaining a severe injury in combat, but he’s not allowed to stay for long as his father sends him back across the galaxy on an errand that promises to be far more difficult than he initially thought and will test his loyalty to family, king, and home.
Arcadia: A colony of humans on a vibrant planet, intent on protecting their freedoms and their valuable resources from falling into the hands of Coriolanus Snow, self-proclaimed emperor of two still merging galaxies. In a desperate attempt to push back and end the fight once and for all, the Lady Katniss Everdeen reluctantly agrees to what she believes is a marriage of convenience in exchange for troops and allegiance from the military might of Meridia. But just because she agreed to the marriage doesn’t mean she’ll go quietly. After all, it’s more than just her life affected by this arrangement.
WARNINGS: RATED E, for explicit sexual content, sci-fi themes and elements, violence and wartime shittiness, character deaths, child soldiers, genocide, arranged marriages and associated general fuckery, one slight dub-con scene and a few serious age gaps in sexual partners, awkward public sex, interspecies sex, also polyamory and polygamy. Oh and Peeta’s bisexual and there are several scenes of him with someone who is not Katniss. Both explicit and implied mentions of Katniss and Peeta being with someone else sexually before they wind up together. There is no Peeta or Katniss committing outright infidelity here, so if that bothers you, fear not. However, other characters may commit infidelity and there are several open relationships. It's set in another galaxy and not everyone is a homo sapien here, please try to keep an open mind in terms of culture variations.
RELATIONSHIP TAGS: Contains M/M, M/F, M/F/F+ and M/M/F relationships as well as associated sexual content. While this is primarily an Everlark+ story, some of these sex scenes are with characters who are not Katniss and Peeta. As in none of the participants are named Katniss or Peeta.
Inspired by a word prompt: Agelast - A person who never laughs
Warnings and tags apply to the entire series and therefore might not apply to this specific installment. Just want you to know what kind of ride you're in for before you climb aboard. I swear it's not as depressing as all those tags make it sound. Okay, maybe it is. So the real question here is...How much do you trust me?
Movement catches his attention from the corner of his eye and he glances down. He sees the injured, not dead, Capitol soldier aiming the blast rifle, right at Katniss. He moves, but the soldier fires, the blast striking rock and causing a rockslide. He hears her scream something and everything goes black and hazy. Peeta falls on the soldier and grabs his head, smashing his face into the ground with a sickening crunch. Satisfied that the man is now truly dead, he whips his head up, heart in his throat, and scans the rocks.
“Peeta!” she yells from her position right before loosing another arrow. “North!”
He nods and takes a deep breath before motioning for his troops to follow behind him.
She’s fine. She’s fine. He has to repeat the words over and over as they move, and still, he constantly checks on her until Mitchell elbows him to get him to refocus. The snow distracts him from fretting over Katniss as it starts up again and he curses the damn stuff.

MoreS2SL Preview: The Pearl of the Antilles
I have donated stories to @mores2sl  for five years now. I am finishing a story I started for this very same charity, submitting it in its completion for the collection.  As you know, @mores2sl is the continuation of what was once called Smut 2 Save Lives. It is a charity collection of fanworks published annually to raise funds and awareness for DIPG, a rare and usually deadly form of childhood cancer. The collection’s charity of choice is Hope for Caroline, but you don’t have to donate to them.  All it takes is a $10 donation to either Hope for Caroline, or to a non profit cancer research group of your choice, and you receive access to the entire MS2SL collection (borrowed part of this paragraph from @katnissdoesnotfollowback because she wrote it better than me :) )
I wanted to share my progress with my historical Everlark, The Pearl of the Antilles. Set in Saint Domingue in 1791, it was inspired by the story line of Capitaine Etiene Relais and Violet Boisier in the novel, The Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende. Their passionate love affair takes place against the back drop of the Haitian Slave Revolt. Enjoy and please donate to this worthy cause!
XXXXX
“No, Katniss!” Rue hissed vehemently, her face stern and serious. Her friend, once so delicate, so unspeaking, was now frightening in her earnestness. Rue had become more than a woman through the travails of the last months, losing her hesitant ways. “You will not interpret the will of the Loas in this way. You have been touched also, though you will not speak of it.” Katniss made to protest but Rue shook her head vigorously. “They are not like the god of the Catholic missionaries, so vindictive, so quick to assert their god’s supremacy at the cost of desolation, just so his name be known to all. The Loas live alongside of us, inside of us. Unless it be their nature, they long to see us thrive, for our good fortune is theirs. Erzuli…”
“Erzuli’s mountings end in tears,” Katniss quoted Mother Seeder, the desolation of those words spreading through her.
“Because her purview is love. Love is travesty and triumph. You surrender, you are conquered, and yet your conquest is your greatest joy. Do you not suffer for your husband in his absence, and shed tears at night for fear of any harm coming to him? And yet do we not welcome this into our flesh, into our hearts, because the alternative, not having them to love, is worse than death itself? Tears and suffering are a part of love or else it is not love at all.”
Katniss thought of her irritation with Lady Flickerman, how she saw in her husband and instrument, a convenience, because she knew, in this attitude, there was not love. And it offended her, for she could never see Peeta in that way. Rue, at her young age, had learned this lesson already with Thresh. These men were more than a means to an end, more than just a convenience for the advancement of their own well-being. Peeta was Katniss’s well-being, and she could only have peace if she knew he was whole, and safe, and with her.
“We are a pitiful pair, you and I,” Katniss said as she caressed her skin with the warm water, washing off the day’s uncertainties and, despite her fear, restoring her faith in all things good and virtuous, such as her friendships and her love. “Suffering for our affections and calling it joy. Longing for our men, and calling it happiness.”
“So it must be,” whispered Rue. “For so it is.”
Katniss reached up to her friend, heedless of the water that spilled from the tub, and gave her a lingering kiss on the cheek.
“For so it is,” Katniss answered.

Reblogging today for DIPG awareness day.
Have you ever heard of DIPG?
I’m going to take a break from gossip for a moment to get serious … and sad. Have you ever heard of DIPG? It stands for  Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, which is a brain tumor. This type of brain tumor attacks the brain stem, and usually attacks in children. When a child gets this diagnosis, the cold ugly truth is that his or her parents are essentially told “your child is dying, and there’s not much we can do about it”.  I cannot imagine much worse in this world than a parent being given that news.
I learned about DIPG when a friend’s son was diagnosed with it a little over a year ago. He underwent radiation to extend his life, followed by an experimental treatment that showed promise in the beginning, but was not enough to save him.  He died March 1 of this year.
Today would have been his 11th birthday. It’s been weighing on me a lot today that this mom who last year had to be told her son was dying and there was nothing that could be done today does not get to race around buying cupcakes and candles to celebrate with her son. Parents deserve hope - and they should get to hug their kids on their birthdays.
We can give parents hope when told their kids have cancer if we devote more to researching pediatric cancers. The drugs that prove effective against cancer are so strong that we can’t just translate what is done for adults into kids.  Currently, 4% of cancer research dollars go to pediatric cancers in general.  I opened this by asking if you’d ever heard of DIPG because right now, 0% of cancer research dollars go towards DIPG research.  We owe parents of these kids more - and we really owe the kids themselves more.
So I’m remembering my friend’s son today be spreading the word. If you didn’t know about DIPG before, hopefully the next time you hear about it you’ll know a little more about what it is. If you have a chance to advocate for increased funding for research of pediatric cancers, please do. If you want to put money towards it yourself, St Judes does wonderful work for families facing pediatric cancer, and does research for DIPG.  The ChadTough Foundation and the Michael Mosier DIPG foundation are also two charities started by families who lost children to DIPG. Both raise money for research and for supporting families whose children are going through treatment now trying to extend their lives.
If you made it this far in this blog, thank you for reading.

Day 22 of 2017 // You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. This post is dedicated to a family who is grieving a loss that no one should ever have to grieve. @jordanasrainbows was created in memory of their daughter Jordana, who passed away one year ago today from DIPG, an aggressive cancer that takes the lives of children. I started following @jordanasrainbows a little while ago and with every post and share they made, I got to know more about Jordana and more about their fight to find a cure. There are so many quotes about rainbows, but this one seems fitting for today. To the family of Jordana, and all the families who are grieving the loss of their child. Don't lose hope, because the dream of finding a cure WILL come true. Thank you for sharing your loss and your love and for bringing awareness to DIPG. I hope this post helps to bring more awareness to your fight. Every rainbow is a sign that you are one step closer to your dream. 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈 Tag and share this. #hope #grief #findacure #rainbows #jordanastrong #children #loss #inspiration #daretodream #dreambig

How Intrusive CPS Visits Led To The Formation of The Family Law Cannabis Alliance
Diana-Ashley Krach of High Times Reports:
While there’s still not enough support for parents under investigation by CPS, there is some hope now.
As legalization continues throughout the country, more discussions are happening about one sore spot in the cannabis space: Child Protective Services’ involvement, which often creates destructive change. Sara Arnold aka Sahra Kant, understands the horrifying damage CPS can cause more than most, having dealt with them four times. The fourth CPS visit was the day after the death of Arnold’s daughter Liberty, continuing to investigate her family for six weeks.
During this extremely trying time, Arnold didn’t see any support from the cannabis community, despite the tireless activism work she put into the space. Arnold has been talking about CPS for almost a decade, first under a pseudonym (Sahra Kant), and then as the co-founder of Family Law Cannabis Alliance (FLCA). The same week Arnold took part of a front cover Time article about women activists in cannabis, her daughter Liberty was diagnosed with DIPG brain cancer.
“Over four times dealing with CPS, I learned that parents are often alone in it,” Arnold tells High Times, “There is little to no legal help, and what exists often costs far more than parents are able to afford.”
She points out that there is no burden of proof on the part of CPS, something she saw firsthand when she got the call that she would be dealing with the agency for her and her daughter’s medical cannabis use.
“CPS is a Kafkaesque system where parents have to be compliant or risk further steps taken against them, by some people who, even in fully medicalized and legalized states, consider cannabis to be as dangerous a drug for parents to use as heroin.”
Arnold points to the stigmatization that is specific to dealing with CPS, saying that the process makes parents feel like second-class citizens. While marginalized communities are targeted for possible “drug” use, no parent can really protect themselves against the interference of CPS. She says that upper-middle-class white parents may feel a sense of freedom in legal and medical states because they are ignorant to the fact that the agency can and will involve itself in their lives at the slightest provocation.
“Parents of color, those on Medicaid, parents with any kind of disabilities or mental health issues are quite aware that their cannabis use can still result in stigma and interdiction by CPS,” Arnold said.
Because cannabis is illegal on a Federal level, CPS has the authority to consider it as something that could potentially endanger the well-being of a child. While certain legislation like California’s Proposition 64 and its subsequent amendments may allow for certain protections for medical cannabis patients, it is still CPS’s role to determine if there is neglect. CPS involvement can occur because something as simple as a cannabis smell coming from a purse or clothing can motivate someone call in a complaint.
Once CPS (or Department of Children and Families, depending on the state) opens a case, the investigation process begins a personal survey of family, sexual, physical and mental histories, among other intimate inquiries. The parent then must wait anxiously for weeks to know the next steps, which can include addiction treatment and other interventions that seriously disrupt family life. In many cases, parents lose their jobs while trying to regain custody, because they are forced to enter some sort of rehab which is time-consuming and costly.
Additionally, parents who have a medical need for cannabis are forced into cessation, which can result in loss of income and the ability to supply the best care for their child. In her article titled The Shocking State of Cannabis-Related Child Protection in Massachusetts, Arnold makes it clear that CPS is allowed to adopt a child to a foster parent if the child is taken out the biological parent’s care for being in CPS custody for six months out of the previous twelve months if under the age of four.
The months in foster care don’t have to be consecutive, and CPS can allow a foster parent or alternate caregiver to adopt if a child creates a bond with them. Reports to the agency can occur because of prenatal testing showing cannabis use, or because individuals who consider themselves “mandated reporters” call anonymously, but it can also be anyone who opposes cannabis. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) outlines prenatal exposure to illegal drugs or substances as neglect or abuse, and many mothers have to deal with losing custody the minute their baby is born.
For parents dealing with this precarious situation, Arnold co-founded the FCLA, which gave cannabis users invaluable resources and connections to legal professionals. In addition to detailed state profiles outlining current custody and cannabis laws, the FCLA has a guide on dealing with CPS, an extensive collection of cannabis research, and has created language that shaped legislation.
“We provided direct service to those in need as well as significant amounts of state-based legal analysis, a legal network including referrals, and even model language for parent-protective provisions in legislation (drafted by 2 well-known cannabis attorneys in addition to myself), among additional resources.  Our model language is in a few bills, including the legalization law successfully passed in Massachusetts”, Arnold said.
Unfortunately, because the cannabis community support is lacking, FCLA is shutting down, becoming an archived educational and historical resource. While Arnold is discouraged by the lack of public conversation surrounding CPS involvement, she appreciates that other people are doing the work. One of those people is Marissa Fratoni, a cannabis nurse, educator, and advocate who helps parents make informed decisions about cannabis use. On her blog, Holistic Nurse Mama, Fratoni discusses things like the health effects and benefits of using cannabis, but says that the greatest risk for parents (using cannabis) is the possibility of CPS involvement.
“I feel that parents cannot make informed decisions about cannabis use without having thorough understanding of the social and legal consequences they may face as cannabis users,” Fratoni tells High Times, “I do my best to fill these gaps for parents who reach out to me either by directing them to a resource on my blog, or by consulting with them through Cannamommy.org.”
Cannamommy.org is another resource for mothers who use cannabis, offering an online clinic and other educational resources. Tokeativity is a global community (both online and physical events) that offers an online forum and social media platform for cannabis-consuming mothers to discuss the complexities with each other privately, and hosts events for the purpose of empowering mothers to medicate with cannabis. Americans for Safe Access has a helpful guide for how to deal with CPS intervention, along with other legal resources.
While there are limited resources available, the overall outlook of cannabis use and custody stays dim as long as CPS has the power to predict the outcome. In the meantime, the conversation surrounding this issue needs to become more mainstream so that activists can flourish and continue to build on available support systems.

Last week I went to Walmart and they already had their Breast Cancer gear out ready for sale. Breast Cancer research is also very close to my heart. My mother is a Stage 4 metastatic Breast Cancer survivor, so yes, to me Breast Cancer research is very important to me. However I do firmly believe that Pediatric Cancer deserves just as much awareness and support if not more. Children are out future. Even though September has come to an end we still need to #gogold for Childhood Cancer. Too many children are suffering and too many have been taken away by this horrible disease. My best friend Kaley spent more than half of her life fighting Leukemia. She fought as a child, teen and as a young adult because their isn’t enough funding to find a cure that didn’t damage her body. Although I consider it a success that we increased national funding for research from 4% to 7%, anyone who has been effected by cancer knows that 7% is just not enough. Go gold all year long, not just for 30 days in September. I #GoGold all year long for my best friend Kaley, who passed from Leukemia in 2009. I #GoGold for Gabby, an osteosarcoma survivor. I #GoGold for Abri, an Ewing Sarcoma survivor. I #GoGold for Brody, who’s currently fighting Leukemia. I #GoGold for Jessie, who fought DIPG, a fatal type of Neroblastoma. I #GoGold for Emily who shared the same birthday as me and fought sPNET Brain Cancer. I #GoGold for my friend’s children, and all the little loves I’ve baby sat and cuddled. I #GoGold for my cousins children and hope they are never effected like I have been. And I #GoGold for the child I hope to have someday, and find comfort in the hope that someday soon we will have a cure. #Gabbystrong #TeamAbri #BattlingforBrody #NEGU #TeamNEGU #jessierees #LoveLikeEmi #osteosarcoma #ewingsarcoma #leukemia #neuroblastoma #DIPG #spnet #braincancer #GoGold #childhoodcancerawareness #pediatriccancerawareness #morethan7 https://www.instagram.com/p/BoYOlqQjVwA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6akwcist86bv

Sajni walks among the stars: A parent’s perspective
PHOTOS COURTESY OF CHAKRABARTI FAMILY
In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Prabal Chakrabarti writes about his daughter Sajni.
Our daughter Sajni Chakrabarti was only 7 and a half years old when she was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer –  diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) – and given only nine months to live.
Sajni loved life and learning. She spoke French fluently, played the violin and read avidly. And after she became sick, even as she struggled and was sad, she kept her bright-eyed glow and laughter all the way through. She still aimed to change the world, even writing a letter to the White House on climate change.
Sajni survived 19 months after diagnosis and enjoyed her life until the very end; she swam, rode horses, practiced karate, laughed with her sister, Anandi, and her friends. She went to school almost every day despite the growing disabilities that her tumor caused. She endured all of it with grace, courage and determination and she continues to inspire all those who knew her.
It’s a painful blur to recall all the things we did to try to save her – over 100 appointments to Boston Children’s Hospital and the Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, ten trips to England for an experimental and innovative treatment, two surgeries and a personalized vaccine.
As she entered hospice care in our home, she chuckled while watching videos. We read many stories to her, trying to transport her to experiences beyond her failing body. One of her favorite stories was the Phantom Tollbooth. One passage in particular captures her shimmering specialness, suggests the terrible maladaptive growth of her disease and expresses her resilient vitality by which she rose far, far above.
In “The Phantom Tollbooth”, Milo leaves his bedroom to explore a world of imagination and perspective. Walking in a forest, Milo meets a boy Alec, floating in air, one of a group of people who grow downward from their head:
“Does everyone grow the way you do?” puffed Milo when he had caught up.
“Almost everyone,” replied Alec, and then he stopped a moment and thought. “Now and then, though, someone does begin to grow differently. Instead of down, his feet grow up towards the sky. But we do our best to discourage awkward things like that.”
“What happens to them?” insisted Milo.
“Oddly enough, they often grow ten times the size of everyone else,” said Alec thoughtfully, “and I’ve heard that they walk among the stars.”
Sanji’s story and the efforts of Dr. Mariella Filbin (Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s and the Broad Institute) to find a treatment for DIPG made the front page of the Boston Sunday Globe. In Sajni’s memory, the nonprofit Lucy’s Love Bus opened the Sajni Center, a place for integrative therapy for children with cancer or serious illness.
