Last week I went to Walmart and they already had their Breast Cancer gear out ready for sale. Breast Cancer research is also very close to my heart. My mother is a Stage 4 metastatic Breast Cancer survivor, so yes, to me Breast Cancer research is very important to me. However I do firmly believe that Pediatric Cancer deserves just as much awareness and support if not more. Children are out future. Even though September has come to an end we still need to #gogold for Childhood Cancer. Too many children are suffering and too many have been taken away by this horrible disease. My best friend Kaley spent more than half of her life fighting Leukemia. She fought as a child, teen and as a young adult because their isn’t enough funding to find a cure that didn’t damage her body. Although I consider it a success that we increased national funding for research from 4% to 7%, anyone who has been effected by cancer knows that 7% is just not enough. Go gold all year long, not just for 30 days in September. I #GoGold all year long for my best friend Kaley, who passed from Leukemia in 2009. I #GoGold for Gabby, an osteosarcoma survivor. 💗💗💗🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾😭 #Repost @teamabri ・・・ Abri got her American Girl Doll back from A Step Ahead Prosthetics! She was so excited!!! This doll she named Alexandria was with her during treatment so they were bald together. We stuck a magnet in Alexandria’s chest so she could get “her port accessed and get chemo” when Abri had hers done. Alexandria even had a backpack of fluids that she would wear when Abri had to wear hers. When Abri had her limb salvage I drew a scar on Alexandria’s leg in the same place and Alexandria went around in a wheelchair and crutches just like Abri. She was beyond excited to send off Alexandria for this new prosthetic leg. I wish I would have been still recording when she realized that the prosthetic came off and Alexandria had a Stumpy just like hers. She squealed at the top of her lungs! I often forget that not everyone in the world lives with an amputee so I tend to say things that make no sense and which tend to embarrass my oldest child. Going out to eat and the hostess asks if we want a booth or a table. I answer back that we will need to take off Abri’s leg while she sits so it can rest so a booth may be easier. Hostesses face was something like this 😳. Ashlyn’s reaction was this 🤦🏼‍♀️. Then after eating Abri accidentally puts her leg on backwards and poses for the following photo. As Childhood Cancer Awareness month comes to an end, I feel so sad and heartbroken that I couldn’t do more or couldn’t fundraise for an organization that strives to help children the way they deserve. I’ll leave with one last chilling photo of the reality of too many childhood cancer stories. The final goodbye of a child’s physical form before being “processed” in a hospitals morgue. The photo is from @taliajoy18’s mother after she said her final hugs, kisses and goodbyes. No child or parent should ever have to experience this. I hope the posts I made during the month has shed some light on this very real problem and I hope you will think twice about donating to legitimate organizations that do everything they can to end childhood cancers. Thank you to @teamabri and @_she_flies_with_her_own_wings for allowing me to use and post their photos and stories to help bring life to a cause that is so close to my heart. I told her that thankfully Abri has done really well and left the battlefield pretty much unscathed. She said “ummmm... she lost her leg 😳”. I know it sounds crazy but none of us consider her losing her leg as that big of a deal. Abri says it just “adds to her flare.” 😉 The other things that she is up against scare us SO MUCH more. If Abri leaves the battlefield with only losing her leg we will consider ourselves extremely lucky. Other survivors out there have and will face much worse. Donated blood in honor of @teamabri today!🎗 There are many ways that you can help kids for childhood cancer awareness month. We have asked that you GO GOLD and tell people why going gold is so important.We have talked about @1million4anna to donate to. There is also @alexslemonade and @stbaldricks and @cannonballkidscancer. These organizations ACTUALLY give the money for our kids for research. We have talked about an organization to donate your hair to called @crownsofcourage And there is still another easy way that you can help. Donating BLOOD and PLATELETS! I had no idea how important blood and platelets would be for a kid going through cancer. Abri received multiple transfusions of both blood and platelets during her year long battle. With every round of chemo Abri's body would be completely wiped out. COMPLETELY!!! She would have absolutely no immune system. This means the chemo is killing off the bad cancer cells but it also means it is killing off every healthy cell too. Abri would take a very painful shot after each round that would cause her white blood cells to start kicking in but there is no shot for red blood cells. Sometimes Abri's body would kick in on its own and start making red blood cells right away but most of the time her body was too weak to do this so a blood transfusion would need to be done. It was like filling up a gas tank. She would go from being pale white and lethargic to pink and full of energy again. You can donate blood every 8 weeks! PLATELETS are another thing that gets wiped out and without platelets your blood cannot clot. That means nose and gums start bleeding and won't stop. Bruises appear everywhere and if there is a cut or an internal bleed it can become life threatening very quickly. Quite often there is a shortage of platelets which is terrifying when your kid desperately needs them. Platelets only have a shelf life of 3 to 4 days so donations are constantly needed. You can donate platelets every 7 days! I’ve been following Abri’s story for almost two years now, and this young lady is so inspirational and such a remarkable testament to what true strength and courage really is.
