Remains of the Dingo Proof Fence

The Dingo Proof Fence once stretched over 8,000km across Australia, in an effort to keep dingos (Australia's native wild dog) out of sheep country. It was largely successful although by excluding the dingo, the kangaroo and rabbit population climbed (almost exponentially) so the sheep had to compete with the kangaroos to get the grass.

Parts of the fence are still in use, but this part of Qld is now cattle country.

The Old and The New

It’s a special time of year for our columnist, and the team is giving her new reasons to celebrate.

I’d like to tell you a story – if I may.

It takes place 11 years ago, and at a tiny grove in the middle of a secret forest. Fireflies dance around a young couple as they snuggle together in the winter air, the sounds of crickets and insects and birds around them make a beautiful night time chorus. The trees around them rustle contentedly above them, and somewhere in the dark, a dingo and his mate are laying down for the night.

The two humans are oblivious to this beauty, only paying attention to each other, and revelling in the love that is shared between them.

These two are soon to be wed – the very next day, in fact – and for them, nothing is more perfect than the other.

Their actual wedding day dawns overcast and with rain due to fall in the afternoon. Guests begin filing into the little chapel early, in awe of how the quaint sandstone building has been transformed for the couple’s special day.

The bride and groom themselves are busy with their own preparations – bride putting the final touches on her hair and dress, groom having a last Scotch with his best man and groomsmen before his ride to the church pulls up.

The hours fly by and their ceremony is soon beginning. A quiet affair – neither of them desired a big fuss to be made – it ends just as a gentle shower drops from the heavens.

The groom steals a glance at his bride as they exit the church – to cheers and confetti from the guests and passers-by cheering from beyond the fence – and his heart swells as he takes in the woman on his arms. Her smile lights up his world, her hair is just starting to come free of its restraints and strands of auburn are falling softly around her glowing face.

She grins up at him and reaches up and brushes from confetti from his hair. And in that moment, there is just the two of them.

The soft sprinkles of rain make them look as though silver glitter has fallen onto them – sparkling in the sudden sunlight that appears as the couple’s lips meet in their first passionate kiss of their marriage.

So, what was with the trip down memory lane, you might be asking?

Well, some exciting things happened this week that had me reminiscing.

First, Tiana and Markys – two of our dressage team members – have been together for a few years now, and Markys announced (to male company only – I only found out because I bugged Richard into telling me) that he planned to propose.

The boys all helped him prepare to pop the question. A quiet trail ride on their two horses, arriving at the highest point on the estate. It has a beautiful view, and you can see right out into the valley, you’re surrounded by peaceful forest and there’s a cheery little creek that runs past the clearing.

Very romantic, isn’t it?

Well, Tiana clearly thought so, because Richard received a text from Markys at about 1:30pm on Friday.

‘SHE SAID YES, BABY!!’

There was a lot of cheering in the yard at that moment.

Proof awaited us when the two lovebirds returned from their ride about an hour later. Markys was grinning like an idiot, and Tiana’s eyes were shining with happy tears, a grin just as wide on her own face.

Of course, all of us girls immediately demanded we see the ring, and she was happy to oblige.

Later, when I was putting some clothes away in my closet, I stumbled across a garment which I remember wearing as though it was yesterday.

I ran my fingers along the white satiny fabric, still so perfect even after eleven years.

The veil was sitting above it – it was the something old I had as part of my good luck package, it had been used by my mother and grandmother at their own weddings.

A nostalgic smile curled my lips as I twirled the delicate lace edges and – on a whim – reached up and took it gently from its place.

Mirroring my own actions from all those years ago, I laid the veil to rest atop my head. It fit just as well as it did then – although I have to say that the yard outfit and paddock boots really didn’t match too well.

Richard and I had our day eleven years ago, and now, on our own anniversary, two of our closest friends are starting their own journey together.

Assuming the trump people and his supporters understand the story presented here, the trump wall will seriously fuck up the ecosystems anywhere along the path of the wall. Not just environmentalists will be angry. So will those who rely on groundwater, ranchers and farmers. I remember that old saying when I was growing up, something like “don’t mess with Mother Nature.”

In the early 1900s, Australia began to build a fence that now stretches for some 3480 miles across the states of South Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland. It is called the “Dog Fence” and its purpose is simple: keep voracious dingoes away from farmers’ livestock. Though it's successfully shut the canines out, as Emma Marris reports for Nature, a new study suggests that this artificial barrier has altered the ecosystems of Australia’s outback.

The study, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, focuses on trophic cascades—when the addition or removal of top predators causes a ripple effect of changes within an ecosystem. Decreasing the number of carnivores, for instance, leads to a proliferation of herbivores, which in turn affects vegetation and soil composition.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales wanted to find out if limiting the number of dingoes on one side of the Dog Fence has created such changes in the area’s landscape. But to do this, they had to first count the number of dingoes and kangaroos—the canines’ favorite snack—on either side of the fence.

According to a press release, the team spent four years driving along outback dirt tracks to count the animals. On the dingo side, researchers spotted a total of 85 dogs and eight kangaroos, Kelsey Kennedy reports in Atlas Obscura. But on the opposite side, there was just one dingo with some 3,200 kangaroos happily hopping about, unchecked by pesky predators.

To determine how this large kangaroo populations might affect vegetation, researchers set up 16 plots, with eight on either side of the fence. Four plots on each side were closed off to kangaroos. On the dingo side, closing the plots to the marsupials didn't have much effect on the vegetation. But on the other side, areas that were blocked off to kangaroos had about 12 percent more coverage.

By munching on plants, in other words, the herbivores were reducing the amount of vegetation coverage. But it's more than changes in plant coverage: this “over-grazing” has led to depleted soils, according to the study. Researchers found lower levels of phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon in the soil where kangaroos roamed in great numbers compared to areas where dingoes were common.

The critters of Fraser Island: the island is known for its dingos which are considered dangerous. We were advised not to be on the beach alone and to keep children close. Any resorts were completely fenced with a dingo proofed entrance and you were not allowed to have food of any type on the braces ($3,000 fine). Needless to say we rethought the idea of wandering out to the beach to watch the sunrise.... The beach was littered with these watery living disks. In the rainforest we saw several of these lizards, a sleeping boa constrictor, the spider with some red in its body and purple under its legs and a kookaburra. If you look closely at the pic that looks like a stick stuck in some leaves you can see a little hole burrowed in the sand at the bottom of the stick, the home of the nocturnal funnel spider, the deadliest in Oz. If you are bitten, you would leave the island in a body bag aghhh!

15/11/19 Dingos on Fraser Island

We have just returned from a 2 day 4wd tag along tour of Fraser Island, the biggest island off the East coast. It’s huge – over 75 miles long – and has a beautiful combination of sandy beaches, wild bush, shady rainforest, and stunning lakes.

Yesterday morning we turned up at the Dingos centre bright and early, and watched a scary video about how easy it is to flip your car when driving on the sand. We met our car 2 team for the next few days: Lisa from Germany who adopted us for the trip, a pair of superbabe dutch ski instructors Carlinda and Maral (who had super bright crystally blue eyes), and a French couple who didn’t speak a lot of English but were happy bouncing around in the back of the car.

We caught a ferry across to the island and spent the next two days bumping along the deep sandy inland tracks and whizzing along 75 mile beach splishing through the creeks.

Driving was super fun and somewhat scary, at one point the girls in the car behind said they’d seen our wheels part company with the floor for a particularly big bounce. Within minutes of arriving we had to pull past a car which had got bogged in the deep sand, and we managed to get through the trip with only getting bogged once. Poor Lisa was driving at the time and didn’t quite have enough English to decipher 6 people shouting “accelerate! Gas! Don’t stop! Go go go!” all at the same time. We all got out to push and nearly died of heat from the sun and hot sand and blaring exhaust. The Dutch girls DJed on Sam’s speaker and we cruised along to very Eurovisionny tunes, as well as a bit of High School Musical.

Yesterday we were mainly based around 75 mile beach, whizzing along at 80kph while aeroplanes took off on the sand alongside us. We stopped at the wreck of a large ship who’s tug cable snapped in 1935, and a family of dingos with 3 pups sauntered about. We stopped for the afternoon at Eli creek, a delicious freshwater stream that we walked up and floated along, then played frisbee and catch and volleyball, the net stretched between two of our bright pink 4x4s.

We spent the night at Happy Valley, safely behind dingo-proof fences. As a big crew we took beers up to a lookout to watch the sun set over the hills, slapping the big viscious march flies off our legs. Then we played Jungle Speed (dobble-esque game) with a group of uni friends from Imperial, ate chilli and wandered down to the beach. The full moon was impressive shining on the sea, and we didn’t get attacked by dingos. A car drove past with the brightest lights ever. Chilled out chatting to Lisa and went for a lush paddle. Set our alarms for 4:40am and pottered back down to the beach to watch the red sunrise, meeting our tour leader Scott who was going for a dawn swim. Wished we had surfboards, it was so beautiful.

Spent the day visiting three stunning freshwater lakes. Lake Wabba is a perch lake, nestled between the forest and a huge high sandmass which looked like a desert, it was vast. The trees gave the lake an emerald green sparkle and we dived off the sandbar and swam across to the other side, meeting a bright blue kingfisher-esque bird. Then sat in the shallows being nibbled by fishes, although they didn’t like Sam very much. On the walk up to it we saw several large brightly coloured iguanas.
