3D technology has apparently been around since the 1800's but it really took off in a mainstream way in the early 1950s. My best guess is that the movie they are talking about is “Kiss me Kate” which was pretty popular and was released in December of 1953. There were a bunch of 3D movies released around that time though so who knows for certain.
