Moment of appreciation for Diesel and Bruno's bond because they genuinely mean so much to me. All of the main cast are good friends to Bruno but I've noticed that Diesel is almost always the one with him if they need to put him next to someone and I think that's great. Like there's multiple occasions of Diesel looking out for him and encouraging him to use his headphones to block out the overstimulating things he's hearing. They're even canonically best friends like does it get any better than this.

I'm sure there's already fics of this, but I feel like it'd be fun to read a 5 times +1 fic of the engines' crews realizing that dealing with their engines is not unlike dealing with a toddler; there's something amusing to me about how despite most of these engines being 50+ years old, they occasionally (coughfrequentlycough) display childlike wonder and behavior over things we humans might consider trivial or common knowledge

r/railroading on Reddit is a really interesting source for the practical nitty-gritty of present-day trains (mostly US and freight-oriented). It’s explicitly geared towards people who actually work on railroads vs enthusiasts, which gives a VERY different view of things vs most train media.

I’ve had a post blow up that’s about how Electra accidentally looks very different when compared to the real-life state of US rail electrification, but Greaseball actually falls in line well with the nastier aspects of present-day major freight railroads (which are allll diesel). The electric vs diesel conflict is super compelling from a US rail perspective because it’s been a relevant battle of interests for decades and has a lot of parallels to broader urban vs rural politics. The relationship between Amtrak and major freight railroads m feeds into a lot of the show’s attempted themes surprisingly well.

(If anyone has recommendations for similar sources better for other countries, please link them, I’d actually love that kind of context for ways to culture swap Stex elsewhere or flesh out the Nationals. I know Japan’s competitive and toxic railroad work culture has become more internationally known due to its relation to the Amagasaki Derailment. It’s aggravating how the Japanese Engine has always been a terrible stereotype when the actual problems of Japanese rail are relatively known and provide a lot of characterization potential.)

So uh hey here's my au take* on the works diesel from the railway series

She's based on the BR Class 53 'Falcon' instead of the Class 47 mainly because:

A: I really wanted one as a character

B: the 47s are not really all that interesting to me sorry /:

*I say 'take' but tbh she might as well just be an oc at this point, though considering how unfathomably boring the works diesel is in canon can you really blame me?

Thomas sat dazed and confused, he had just backed through one of the back walls of Crovan's date sheds.

"Uhh, excuse me, but could someone help me, my bunker is starting to get quite chilly"

"You always seem to find all the accident spots on Sodor, Thomas, Percy said from the track over, "oh how can you be so accident prone?"

"Shut up" Thomas quipped back as Wendell the works diesel made an attempt to get Thomas back in the building.

So my HC is when an engine crosses the magic railroad; when it enters another world it physically changes to the standards of that world. So like Thomas should have become a faceless E2 Class engine when he entered the 'human' world in the TATMR movie...

Some lore down below:

One day, a self-proclaimed diesel engineer suddenly appears on Sodor, causing havoc on the railways with a Class 42 diesel engine. This involves destroying tracks, vandalizing sheds, scavenging scrap, and terrorizing trucks. Thomas is the first person to meet this engineer and demands him to stop causing trouble. The engineer laughs at him, saying that “steamies are so out of date that they'll say anything to stay relevant”. He threatens Thomas that if he dared get in his way or tell anyone about him, he’ll have a nice “talk” with “Pinchy”, the menacing claw on his diesel engine. Thomas is terrified, but he knows he can’t let this rogue criminal do as he pleases. The engineer refers to himself as “Diesel 10”.

From then on, Thomas goes through an ongoing cycle trying to prevent Diesel 10 from causing confusion and delay before anyone else notices. While doing so, he is in constant dread of facing Pinchy and doesn't want anyone else to be hurt by Diesel 10. He especially does not want Percy to get involved, since his best friend is finally content with his work life. The last thing Thomas wanted was to accidentally hurt him again. So he tries to keep this dilemma to himself, but it takes a massive toll on him. While Diesel 10 sees this as all fun and games, Thomas becomes more paranoid and stressed out. This causes him to perform poorly at work and everyone starts to suspect that something is wrong with him. Not wanting to let them down, he would tell them not to worry and pretend that everything is fine. But he was starting to feel inferior again, fearing that he would soon be replaced by new hires if he continued to do worse.
