It's the 2nd Anniversary for Signalis and I wanted to share a little edit I made for it. I adore this game, and I especially admire some of the spectacular pieces made in its name. Hope this finds y'all in good health, and here's to another year!

Adler is annoying simply because he's directly in opposition to Elster but REALLY he and her are the same 👏 fucking 👏 being 👏

Both are defined by their devotion — Elster to the promise she made and Adler to Commander Falke. While Elster's devotion manifests as her trudging into the heart of the Sierpinski's madness, never letting anything get in her way, Adler is the complete opposite: his devotion to Falke comes in the form of stopping Elster from going too deep no matter what.

What ultimately makes them similar is that their approaches to the madness, borne of love and devotion, was wrong. In her love for Ariane, Elster kept putting off mercy-killing her even as the radiation poising corroded Araine. In his love for an unstable Falke, Adler kept opposing Elster and foolishly allowed the nightmare to continue (because the idea of Falke being killed again and again is too much for him). Both Elster and Adler wanted things to go as it usually did, ignoring how things just can't go back, and their choice made nothing but more pain

In the end, however, Elster's tale concludes with her coming to terms with Ariane dying and either fulfilling her promise or lies down next to her to die together. Adler could not do that with Falke, which is why he's condemned to forever be a part of this nightmare

The existence of this autographed Star poster is really funny to me because either A: Jäger is popular enough to be a micro celebrity who has people asking for autographs or B: Jäger is so full of herself she signs everything like she is famous but no one cares except her

My final thoughts on Signalis are really complex but. The selfishness, and recursiveness that permeates the story really grips me. Like its a story about singleminded want. Elster doesn’t care people are begging her to stop because she wants to see Ariane again, Ariane doesn’t care she’s ripping the world to pieces and has always been destroying Elster even from the start, because she wants company, and then as things get worse, just to die,

Falke is built off Ariane to my understanding and is pulled into becoming Elster herself but she can’t do what Ariane wants her to, and instead becomes a guardian because Ariane’s selfishness overpowers, and coalesces with her place as a commander - like she cannot relinquish, she must HAVE so she’s become a blockade that is broadcasting(?) Ariane’s curse. And Adler is made to support her. She is the Ariane to Adler’s Elster, and his broken place in the pattern makes everything seem WRONG to him. He has his own Ariane. The hunt for the other one seems senseless, and the pattern is trying to wear him away too. They’re both puzzle pieces jammed into the wrong slots, and Adler can’t realize he’s doing the same thing over and over and over. Theres a reason so many people have the same eye wounds

And the recursion…. Everything being funneled into the roles of Ariane and Elster. Everyone becomes Ariane and Elster every relationship becomes Ariane and Elster in a senseless and incestuous mass of incongruities, piling higher and higher. Its always someone chasing after a girl, its always coming back to the gateway that looks like a guillotine, and building a wall of bodies higher and higher until all thats left is rot and flesh while and grinding away anything else that cannot fulfill the purpose into bloody pulp.
