I appreciate everyone who commented on the previous version of the post and will be presenting a couple of different options on how to continue this blog either tomorrow or on Tuesday - Original post:

I've been made aware (in a transcript posted below the readmore) that the whole premise and language used on this blog is harmful and dehumanising to adoptees. This was genuine ignorance on my part, but I don't want to continue running this blog in a way that's harmful to a marginalised group

So because of that, I'm going to be ceasing running this blog as "the tumblr found family adoption agency" and in the coming weeks will remove this language from the blog as much as I can

Now, I do enjoy running this blog and would like to continue it in some form. I had considered simply removing references to adoption agencies, but while the original sentiment is still there, I don't think this small change would be good enough

So, my next idea was to change this blog to:

Finding the Tumblr Quest Party

The idea is that we're all on a quest and choosing members of our party. This way the blog would still function on a similar premise, but remove any references to adoption that would be harmful to real life adoptees. The question would simply be "Should this character join the tumblr quest party?" with the answer being yes or no and the results dialogue being something along the lines of "This character [did/didn't] join the quest party", to remove the upsetting ditching on the roadside aspect

Should I go ahead with this, all current characters on the list would carry over as they are, because I'm sure none of us fancy doing hundreds (possibly even into the thousands?) of polls again. Also, the current queue of characters would continue to run

I'd be happy to hear feedback on what you think of this possible change, especially from other adoptees from across the world (though ofc I wouldn't want you to doxx yourselves in the replies, so only say anything your comfortable with sharing)

“You look happier.” You confessed, walking up to Kelly before taking a seat next to him at the bar. You knew that the music playing in the background was not loud enough to hide the sadness in your voice. He knew you like the back of his own hand, so you couldn't help but feel a little ashamed by the comment you just made.

"That's because I am." He flashed you a half smile. "I am happier." You couldn't say it didn't hurt you a bit when he confirmed that. You met his smile and stared at him for a while, rearranging the thoughts in your head. You wished it was you. You wished you were the girl that just walked out of the aisle with her arm looped around Kelly's.

"I'm happy for you. Really, I am." You nodded your head, gently squeezing his arm. "I am sorry that things didn't work out between us. But…seeing you here with that big smile on your face made my heart fill with joy. I always wanted you to be happy, Kelly. Even if that means I have to see you getting married to someone else."

Kelly stared at you for a while, not knowing what to say. He could see you were telling him the truth, you really were happy for him, but the look in your eyes told him something else. He could see right through you. You were hurting.

“I heard you’re leaving 51.” He changed the subject, taking a sip from his drink as he looked away. Deep down there was this odd feeling as if he was suddenly doubting the decision he made just an hour ago. He felt that if he kept looking into your eyes for too long he might regret getting married to the person that could've been you. Sometimes he looks at you and asks himself where did it all go wrong.

“Yeah, I'm leaving 51.” You quickly nodded your head, whipping off the tears that were forming in your eyes. “I need a fresh start, you know? I think spending some time away from Chicago might do some good.”

“Away from Chicago or away from me?” Kelly mumbled, his question felt more like a statement. Before you could answer, he shook his head and flashed you a smile. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. I think you should do whatever makes you feel better. If staying away from Chicago for a while is the solution, then go for it. I’ll be here for you when you come back.” He gently squeezed your shoulder as his own eyes started to water.

You nodded your head and pressed your lips together, holding back a sob. There was no point in holding back the tears, they were already running down your face as you quietly stood up and grabbed your purse.

Looking back at the party, you saw all of your friends smiling and having fun. Herrmann saw you standing there and quickly made his way toward you, noticing the fresh tears in your eyes. Without saying a word, he grabbed you by the hand and dragged you to the center of the room where all of your friends were drinking and dancing. hii! if u dont mind could you please give some ips on starting a seventeen writing account.

okayyy so, when it comes to writing i just answered another ask, so you can scroll a bit down, and see if it’ll be any help. 

when it comes to creating a masterlist i took inspiration from different authors on how to properly format it, and what it should contain, and then made it my style and everything (at the beginning i had to look up different tutorials on how to link things, and change colours, so in my case doing some research was really helpful). i think an aesthetic masterlist, a nice profile pic and background banner are kind of important since it’s the first thing people pay attention to when they click on your profile (though don’t overthink it too much). just try to make it simple, and easy to navigate (some masterlists are like a maze, they’re so complicated, and for what?). 

i know that a big part of tumblr is the community, though i can’t say much about that myself. i find it really hard to make friends, so i don’t really have experience with that side of tumblr, but if you are up for it, you can message other authors via their inboxes. i’m sure that makes the whole experience so much different. 

tbh it’s hard for me to give tips on how to actually start an account, because when i started mine i just did it, and then figured it out step by step. and if you ask me, that’s the best way. i don’t think you should think about it too much, you should just go for it.

Being sick for the past week meant that I had nothing better to do today than lay in bed and refresh tumblr waiting for chapter 34, and seeing it at the very top of my dash was the highlight of my day! The wait was definitely worth it, my health for the duration notwithstanding lol

SPOILER WARNING FOR PAST CHAPTERS IDK HOW TO PUT READ MORES IN ASKS I'M SO SORRY

You made the right call taking the extra time to edit this doozy of a chapter—figuring out how to share Dale's exposition in a way that made sense and fit into the events of the story while maintaining tonal consistency must have been quite the process, between the restrictions of Sana's POV, regency genre conventions, and the story's (heh) natural climax being Dale's identity "reveal" followed by the wedding. I'm very curious if you currently have any ideas for how you're going to tackle this exposition in the novelization, or if you're inclined to handle it differently at all!

i hav no idea if u can even put a read more in an ask anymore and i can't hide it now but my answer will be under the read more

thanks! i think some people really underestimate how helpful even self editing is to make things coherent, especially for a long chapter like this one that covered so much but also was literally just two ppl talking to each other (ppl lov to say they'll take any update, but lik, thats cuz they dont knooow lol and i dont just want it to b passable, i want it to b good).

with lore/backstory like this i also have to make sure it makes sense to readers who havent read any of it before nor know any of the even more info that I know because there's even more worldbuilding and dale backstory that wont end up in the story.

i'm glad u think i pulled it off to any degree because i was still pretty nervous when i was posting it that it did make sense, fit in the world, was followable, interesting but not just exposition monologue, etc

yeah, chapter 30 where they have the reveal convo is the primary climax of the story and that's also 'just talking' in a sense so its interesting to write this story in that sense lol

while i had the broad outline of the world and dale's backstory from the beginning (i did a little exercise where i sketched out a sort of Dale POV of chapter 6 to get into his mindset which was super helpful) as I wrote the story a lot more of that info became fully fleshed out/defined. so for the novelization, i'll probably try to work more of the info in earlier or have better allusions to it, which will make some of the info in chapter 34 more of a quick confirmation than the exposition itself

ie i might add a chapter with more detail on Sana researching with Dale's books that Bilmont smuggles and plant suspicions of what went wrong with the summoning; i might adjust the chapter after the attack to be more of a convo about the assassination that the grandparents interrupt where Sana can suspect more of Dale's past etc and generally spread out what i can so its more foreshadowed/natural - things like that

other aspects sort of have to be told to Sana because its POV limited, evn when it is updated to 3rd POV. i'll probably do a straight POV swap and minor edit ; then take a look at it as a whole, reassess things on my own, run those ideas by some writer friends/betas and get their thoughts, and finally my editors (who i used for DSM) are also very good with making sure worldbuilding fits in right and so their advice will be helpful - especially since they will only get the draft i giv them without knowing how it was and what changed etc

once chapter 35 is out (which i'm still writing because smut is a challenge to right and i write it more slowly than other things) i'll start slowly editing and passing along to betas the rest of the story (i've got thru chap 11 done and betas who only read those and who are chomping at the bit - u think u've had a long wait? lol) but it will be spring by the time i do any big edits/revisions and then i'll giv it to the editors, who i already lik, semi-lined up for that time period and idk how long they will take because its a long book and then i'll need to process their edits too so it'll be a lengthy process, but i hope everyone knows it will 100% b a novel and i hope they enjoy it!

now back to stabbing away at the smut writing ;)

1 - hmmm this was hard to narrow down so i'll talk abt a specific scene that's been on my mind. okay ig honestly the detention center is Always on my mind because it's the first time we get a really good look at megumi's character and what he values. but mostly i was thinking abt the part where megumi takes the name tag from the guy he was so adamant about not saving for his mom. i don't think he changed his mind, but to me, it just shows how much he cares about his friends. like i think when he originally took it, it was so he could give it to yuuji so he could give it to the guy's mom, but then when he thought yuuji was dead, he delivered it as a way to pay respect dkfgjhd idk current top megumi moment

2 - nowadays when i rewatch it im team near & mello actually🤞 and pretty anti-light, but i think the first time i watched it, i was so wrapped up in the back & forth between light & l that i probably did root for both this was like 10 years ago tho so i dont remember fs 😭

3 - ooh i think like. in terms of writing fanfic its like when i was a kid & played w dolls like it gives me the same type of feeling, but also i've always been the type to use imagination as escapism, so being able to bring the things in my head "to life" is really satisfying as well

Babes. I really appreciate all the asks about Daughter of Fire! It makes me happy to see that people love it as much as I do, I just gotta ask something of y’all. Please leave a review before sending an ask here! I noticed a lot of you don’t do that (not to mention the anon asks that I can’t possibly know if they did comment or not) and I just wanna explain a bit why it matters. I don’t know if u guys have been around here for as long as I have but the fandom culture changed a lot over the years, not all of it for the better. Five, ten years ago, it used to be the norm to comment on almost every single fic you read, in every chapter. There used to be discussions in the comment section, readers answering readers and sparking conversation… just genuinely a lot more interaction than nowadays. I’ve mentioned this before but I felt like writing another post about it.

Please notice that I’m not saying “don’t ever send me an ask about DoF again” or “you should be giving me comments NOW!!!”. I’ve just been scrolling through my endless unanswered asks and noticed that there were a lot like those I mentioned.

Now, I know sometimes it’s hard to send a review. I, myself, sometimes get so anxious just by the thought of writing a comment that I just don’t even read the fic/chapter. But notice how this is aimed towards the people who already took the time off their day to sit down on Tumblr and send me an ask. It would take the same amount of time to drop a review! And you can even do it anonymously too!

Anyways, this isn’t a complaint, I’m just always a bit sad to see that this is the way we led fandom culture? I know it might seem a bit disingenuous to be saying that when DoF has the reach it has but keep in mind that I also write other fics and most of them only get a little bit of engagement. It’s honestly disheartening because while I don’t write fanfiction for the comments, I do share it for them. I could just write them and satisfy that need and keep it to myself, never putting myself out there so others might judge me but I do because I love the fanfiction community and I love interacting with it.

I also noticed that authors who don’t have their social media linked tend to have more engagement in the comment section and that’s kinda what this post is about. Although we don’t comment as much as we did back in the days, it’s still the way some people choose to give fics their time of day, they see if there’s a lot of hits/kudos/comments before even giving it a try. So it does matter in a way that the engagement gets through other media only like some of the asks here! I’m not saying stop interacting with me here and keep only to the comment section, even because I chose to link all my social media because I love interacting w y’all in a deeper level here and on twt and other platforms but like. If you do choose to reach out to me, don’t forget to leave a review!

As I’m writing this I’m already regretting it lmao I don’t want to seem ungrateful and nitpicky but in the end I’m forcing myself to post this because it might spark some conversation and I do know a lot of authors feel like I do. We’re seeing how much writing isn’t being valued in our society and that’s kind of the same in fandom culture imo and I dunno. What do y’all think?

Oh, btw! Regarding the next DoF update!!! I can’t, and really it’s more like I don’t want to, give you guys a precise date. I struggled for quite some time with feeling like DoF was a chore, a job I had to keep up otherwise I would let everyone down and that (and some other stuff) led me to the biggest writer’s block I’ve ever had in my life. I’m just now trying to reconnect with that part of me that loves writing and finds actual enjoyment in tackling this huge and complex fic (and any and all writing tbh), so I don’t want to slip back into that same pattern I had before. I don’t like the term hiatus for fanfiction because it gives me this notion that the author is obligated to go back to the fic when in fact they’re not (unless the fic has a set update schedule and the author is letting u know when they’ll be back). No one is getting paid for this and most of us study and work full time jobs before coming and sharing something that can be really personal with strangers on the internet. If an author wants to drop their fic and never come back to fandom life than that’s their prerogative. We as fanfic readers kinda sign that unwritten contract that when we start reading an unfinished fic we might never get to see the end of it. However, I like the term hiatus because it illustrates my point with this which is: I’m not done with Daughter of Fire. I just don’t know when I’ll update next. Rest assured that if I ever decided to let it go, I would let everyone know. I would release all the chapters I have written, I would give y’all all of my notes and unfinished drafts and lone scenes, I would give you the document where I tell you step by step what would happen until the very end of the fic (and the sequel I have planed for it 👀). And I would also leave it open to anyone who wants to continue it to pick it up and give it a try. As it stands, I’m nowhere near done with Daughter of Fire 🖤

1. your main fandom of the year: Star Wars -- after like three years of feeling way-too-sensitive about the series, I decided to take that whole Marie Kondo approach to fandom: keep what brings you joy and throw the rest into an active volcano (or...something like that. It's been a minute since I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, but I'm sure that's an accurate synopsis that Marie would be totally fine with on her book's dust jacket). And then I started writing fanfiction, which has been fun.

Though...though...I did revisit The Hunger Games this year and made my bestie into an HG fan, so that series has certainly played a part.

2. have u watched a film this year: I've only been to theaters twice this year -- once for the Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary rerelease, once to see Barbie. I don't think I've watched many new things this year, to be honest. Mainly rewatches.

3. your favorite book this year: Oof, my reading list is embarrassingly short this year. Probably Nine Liars by @maureenjohnsonbooks. It's the 5th book in a YA mystery series and love that entire dang series so much.

4. your favorite album or song this year:

Album: Stick Season by Noah Kahan

Song: Probably "Happier Than Ever" by Billie Eilish, but I'm honestly not certain

5. your favorite tv shows this year: I think I rewatched Severance twice this year, so...Haaaa...

8. your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: You know what, I rarely hate on specific ships publicly, but having one of my posts in which I was spitballing a headcanon involving Tarkin and Leia having an absurd rivalry while she was like 16-19 years old that was similar in tone to Jack Donaghy and Kaylie Hooper from 30 Rock (a relationship that is entirely not sexual on account of Kaylie being fifteen when she first pops up on the show) reblogged multiple times with Leia/Tarkin shipping tags might just have been the most disappointing fandom-related thing to happen to me personally this year. I don't even know if this is the type of answer the question was looking for, but uh...it was definitely the most disappointing.

9. your tv/movie boyfriend and/or girlfriend of the year: I'm...not entirely sure how to answer this tbh.

10. your biggest squee moment of the year: I've received a lot of really nice comments on my stories this year, but there have been a handful left where I really felt...seen? if that makes sense. Like, the commenters wrote something where I felt like someone fully understood what I was trying to do, which doesn't always happen, and those have definitely been exciting moments for me.

1. my favorite fic of yours is probably phantasmagoria (with sanemi’s “bundle of joy” and rengoku’s “tell me to stop” being very close second and third places). i loved the complexity of the characters, the unreliable narration, how there was no “black and white” so to speak, everyone in the story in some way or another wasn’t completely good or completely horrible (except d*uma ofc), everyone fucked up somewhat along the way (some more than others lmao); however i am also super excited as well for the great war and vow between man and star, and ofc the completion of netherwood lolol, and have no doubt you’ll crush those fics too!!

3. best character you’ve written for: honestly, i’m just gonna straight up say i love how you write ALL your characters. however (and i’ve talked about this to you before) i have never loved how someone writes kyojuro more than how you write him. i am not the biggest kyo girlie (gasp i know) BUT the way you write him??? god i’d marry your version of kyo in an instant. you make him so much more than just the over-enthusiastic characteristics that he possesses, and i love that about your writing of him.

of course, i loveeee how you write sanemi and giyuu as well (your sanemi is what turned me from thinking “oh this guy is kinda cute” to being a victim of sanemi brainrot), and ofc your characterization of giyuu is so on-point and ugh (can you tell that i love your writing LOL)

8. what i like the most about your writing: it’s so difficult to pick just a single thing lmao (i love your descriptions, your dialogue, your storytelling/plot delivery, everything really) but i think what i like most is your creativity. you think of the most interesting premises (take vow between man and star, i still don’t know how you thought up the storyline for that, and yet it’s one of my favorite premises that i’ve seen come out of that beautiful brain of yours; same with phantasmagoria, i loved how you wrote the story and the dynamics between characters and how you took into consideration how certain plot points would cause internal changes within the reader and sanemi, the foreshadowing, the narration, everything really.) your creativity is astounding to me, and i love every single idea you think up and share with us<3

Thank you so much for remembering my words and sticking around my blog so long. 🥺💕 Anyway yeah, that unfortunately happens sometimes, and by sometimes, I mean a lot, ‘cause a) there are people out there who unironically think it’s okay to take creative liberties in translating because it’s their right as someone taking the time to do it (can’t be assed rn but if you search around this site enough, you’ll find an entire thread of translators talking about this), b), there are people who write for a lot of series they’re not into and therefore aren’t aware of all the context of previous novels, c) there are people who just slip up and make mistakes! Happens all the time unfortunately and most people don’t understand that if you misunderstand or change one thing it can change everything, and d) people who are tasked with translating 99% of the time never even talk to the people team of people who actually published the original, much less are in contact with the author themself! Mistranslations and drastic creative liberties happen a lot for example in the fandom I came from (The Legend of Zelda), which you can see a bit here! And if you still don’t believe me, you can go ask Dear old Author Neil Gaiman, who has even had some of the characters in his books turned from lovers to sisters and everything, a lot of the time completely without his knowledge until fans point it out to him! If you scroll his blog, I’m sure you’ll find those posts for yourself, assuming he doesn’t see an ask from you on if it happens. ‘Tis a sad thing, but Asagiri-sensei likely doesn’t even know when a mistranslation happens, much less do these people sit down and ask him things directly before doing their thing. He certainly doesn’t have involvement overseeing the process; that’s an unreasonable thing to ask of someone when it involves other languages they may or may not even be fluent in. And all the proof we need that it’s wrong is that the JP novel and the Stage Play (both things that Asagiri was directly, heavily involved in and/or directly penned the words of/material of the script for himself) both contradict it. If you’d like to take on that claim, since you’re implying I’m wrong, have at it! The burden of proof is on you, so, I look forward to seeing you send me the individual JP source lines of the Eng translations you want to take a crack at defending and a long wall of educational text explaining why each part of the English translation got it 1,000% right, directly in my in-box. Did the tma dating sim that’s floating around tumblr, wanted to write about the character I made, a corruption aligned Oc friends with Lonely!Martin. Uh warning no actual dating happens, just a lot of the Horrors. And also I am experimenting with a very different writing style (designed to be unsettling/disconnected, just a heads up). Enjoy:

I am a researcher that the Magnus Institute, London. It is long, monotonous and dull work, and I am certain my colleagues dislike me immensely. This is understandable.

I spend more time in the library than with them, Sasha seems to have noticed. She tries to talk to me, which… I could take or leave to be honest. The books say more interesting things.

I have a feeling… well just a feeling really. Like something is deeply wrong with my place in all of this. Like I wandered in from the cold and brought a little of it with me. I leave footprints by the doors.

Timothy stoker seems to get along well with me. I do not get along well with him. I think him and Sasha are trying to make friends with me, which is not understandable. Jon just stares. I do not get the work done, but he seems to respect my dedication, even if it is not in productive areas. I read about Peter Lukas, Elias mentioned him, and feel relief that I am not That alone.

I reach out to Tim.

We go to a museum, he is animated in a way that makes me listen. By the time we leave I feel I know who he is. I vow to return the kindness.

So in turn I speak to Sasha. She is less easy to talk to, I should’ve been nicer in the library. But she is smart, we find interests in common.

Martin seems distressed. I do not know him well enough to tell.

There’s a feeling. More than a feeling. I lie awake and dream of black mould covering my windows. The dark is nice enough to grow in.

Martin is gone. I feel bad, Jon seems on edge. He doesn’t like me now, his “Martin Insults” find a new home with my reading hobby. I bring him some old Spider statements in spite. I feel bad later.

I get Martin’s number from Tim.

The heart seems misplaced, given that our one conversation so far was him offering me tea, which I refused saying I preferred coffee. He has avoided me ever since. He also does not know who is texting him, so that is also… concerning.

I attempt to tell Jon, but he is still not over the Spider Incident.

I go home and worry. A tissue comes away red, but I do not worry about that. I do not get sick.

I continue to not get sick. Vision blurry. Head aching slowly. It is probably the coffee. I should drink less. More? I read about a man who loses his mind.

There is a man named Michael and he stares at me through the cafe window. Except it is not a man and it is not called Michael and I am sitting opposite it. It shakes my hand. And talks, a little, with a laugh that echoes all the way down.

I meet it later, in the graveyard. I tell Sasha to call me at midnight, and to tell Tim if I don’t answer. I tell Tim I’m going to do something stupid.

It is stupid, and maybe dangerous as I fall under the mass of worms that had once been human. The thing who answers to Michael for convenience drags me away, plunging its knife-like fingers into my shoulder and prying away the worms, blood pooling on the grass. It tells me not to worry. I don’t.

Tim tells me I am pale. He waits in my apartment past midnight, and asks about the blood. I tell him I jumped a barbed fence. He cleans the wounds and looks at me as if I have lied to him. I look back as if I haven’t.

The blood is coming from my shoulder. So when I rub my eye it is strange to see red.

Martin returns, with worms that are familiar. I ask him if he met a man that wasn’t. He looks sad, so I change the subject and offer him tea. It helps.

We talk, and I fall asleep beside him. Something shifts within my shoulder, but I keep it to myself. Martin has not earned that much respect from me. To spread the disease is to weaken the host.

Martin is my friend. My colleagues do not hate me, besides Jon. He watches the way I walk with caution. I leave footprints by the corners.

Tim does not seem to mind. Or maybe he doesn’t notice. He takes me for a coffee, but I cannot drink it. Vile things churn within me. I offer to pay anyway, because he looks afraid. I stanch the bleeding from my nose with a paper towel, and promise I do not get sick.

There is a book within the library. It sings in caution of a thing that waits to embrace you, in slow decay. I read the moulding pages like they are words carved into my skin. I ask Jon to do some digging on Jane Prentiss. His mouth says he doesn’t know what I’m talking about. His eyes say he does.

She finds me in a half sleep, at the edge of Martin’s bed, watching over him. He says he sleeps better knowing I’m there. I feel better knowing this. She finds me waiting for her, and tells me I am part of the herd with no Shepard. The sweeping tide of decay. The change that makes anew.

I ask her for her name, knowing it. She leaves me, and I sleep. I dream of things growing in the hollow places in my mind.

She visits us all.

Tim is alone, I have to warn him of the Tide. He is not ready, as I am. We escape, CO2 stupid and alive. I am a hive, bloodied and delirious. But Tim makes it out okay. Surgery will help him. I am consumed.

Bandaged faces stare blankly from across archive shelves. It’s easy to hide the things that move beneath strips of off-white gauze.

I smile, and my lips feel warm and wet. Blood runs down my chin, like rain down a windshield. There is nothing that will fix it. But he looks afraid. I’m worried about Tim.

It’s a dark night in bones that feel hollow and eaten. Movement fills the stillness, as blood drips from my curled hands, hovering over the sink. I breathe spores onto the glass, hiding a smile that is red.

I go out into the garden and lay among the grass, where a man lies half way to where I am going. The things that made their home in him are mine, and I theirs. She is grateful, eternally. I am consumed, and home.

Tim is gone. Sasha tells me he is “on holiday”. But she looks different. Like a lie. So maybe she’s lying.

I talk to Martin, and he tells me I look sick. I promise him I do not get sick, but he makes me tea. I pour it into my skin, and my residents hum in appreciation. I reapply the bandages, and thank Martin for the tea. He tells me my nose is bleeding. I tell him it will pass.

It does not. I fall deeper into solitude. They are hungry and hungry and hungry and I cannot give them enough of myself to sate. To sate a thousand mouths. I sink deeper into fear and they do not relent. I awake weakened, and my skin is soft and comes away dusty.

Elias tells us what he is. Jon tells him we are not. But he Knows. He sees the things that crawl and bite. He tells me I cannot survive on my own fear. I tell him I need help. I need him to save what is left of me. He tells me that the only path leads deeper into the woods.

I kill a woman, walking home through a field. The air is heavy with pollen, but it is not. Spores. She chokes in a cloud that waits hungrily for her body. I let it consume her instead of me.

My nose stops bleeding, as do my eyes. For the first time I look clearly upon what I have done. I will not do it again.

I turn to slow and creeping rot. Enough fear to get by on. Little enough not to hurt. Tim comes back, and tells me I look sick. Martin gives him a look, and hands me a tissue. The bleeding will stop on its own. It does now.

Tim is going to leave. Martin and I will stay, to distract Elias. Something to See. Saying goodbye to Tim is heavy, as if the air is filled with spores. I tell him he is my friend, and he tells me I will be okay. He wipes my cheek with his thumb, and it is red.

Elias tells me I am Interesting. He tells me to open the door. And he will save me. He will sever the parts of me that rot. He says he will take away Martin. I open the door. My skin flakes away with the impact of the punch, but it is worth it. Martin bandages my hand, and tells me it will be okay.

It is not.

Jon’s heart monitor flicks a steady pace. He is dead, by all means. But not the same way that Tim is dead. He had not been ready. He hadn’t let go.

I find another person, lost among the Underground. They sit, crying. Waiting for someone to pick them up. Martin calls me, and I leave them to live. He tells me he is afraid. He tells me my flat is not for people to live in. I tell him that’s okay. But I sleep at his anyway, careful not to leave footprints on the carpet.

I find Elias in prison. He tells me the hunger will return, in an endless cycle. I punch him, leaving blood across his face that is all my own. I tell him I will not kill another.

Martin goes missing. Melanie tells me he is here, just not Here. I tell her I don’t understand. I do.

We play video games, the last of us. I tell her I am sad we cannot play characters that walk among the mycelium. She tells me I am weird, which, fair. But she cleans the blood from her controller without complaining. I think we’re friends.

Jon wakes up. He hates me. He Sees what I am.

I miss Martin.

His flat is empty. I sleep there still, my own lost to Rot.

I spend the day looking for him.

I go home.

I spend the day looking for him.

I go home hungry.

I spend the day looking for him.

The rot gnaws and hungers.

I spend the day looking for him.

And do not know what to say when I find him. I only want to say I’m sorry. For what I have become. For who I have killed. I want to tell him what I am. But he vanishes before I can tell him more than that I miss him.

I spend the day looking for him.

And collapse in hunger and dread.

I kill. I kill and kill. I spend days searching, fuelled by sacrifice after sacrifice. I leave trails of spreading rot by the door. I do not sleep.

Elias tells me I have Become. I punch him.

Melanie grows worried, tries to bandage me, to help. I try to let her.

The hollow bones are filled with things that are full and hungry. I miss him. Melanie leaves.

Jon Knows what I am doing. It feels like the end of the world. And then the world ends.

And I have dominion. Because I am Them.

The tower looks close from so far away, but if I keep walking I will find Elias. And I will look him in the eye, and he will See me back.

And I will finally be something worth saving. I will be nothing.
