I was thinking about how Percy as a character would react when it comes to giving empathy to others.

Like if it was a practical problem, this man is finding you a solution one way or another. But if it's like a personal problem, he feels awkward and he doesn't know how to deal with it but he's definitely be there for the person. Because he was isolated from childhood, family didn't pay much attention to him because he's quiet which also leads to him being really independent because he's used to having to do things for himself. And he'll feel bad if anyone had to do anything for him and will want to repay them. It could be a result of his mother who made to keep the house in order, put food on the table, take care of 7 kids and also educate them before they go to Hogwarts.

Percy is shown as a nerd, someone who likes books and there are actual scientific articles saying that people who read more have more empathy because they allow themselves to see things from other people's perspective.

Percy would see the stress his mother is dealing with, the stress his father is dealing with to try keep a roof over their head and would step foward to help if needed so they have a little break.

So when it comes to personal problems, he doesn't ask for help because he doesn't want to worry anyone. This in turn means that he never learned how to actually offer empathy or comfort someone and ends up being awkward. He's better at finding practical solutions not emotional because he's always been emotionally reserved.

This could be why Percy is always making sure his siblings aren't getting into trouble. Its because he doesn't want his parents to be worried but also if his siblings ever got hurt, he knows he doesn't have the ability to offer proper empathy. So he prevents any problems from happening in the first place.

Below is a scenario to summarise.

Percy when his family goes to hin for emotional support: Umm- So like I'm not qualified enough to deal with this but I could book you a therapy session?

Percy when his family asks him on how to find a body (It was a prank but Percy thought they were serious): Don't touch anything without gloves. Don't leave any hair or DNA behind. Leave the blood to me. Cut off the hands and feet first and then bury the body in a forest but do it in dry weather so you don't leave footprints-

Okay, so I'm very much a Lukesse shipper (took a break from writing a fic to write this lol), but I wholeheartedly agree with this statement, and I think we all should do better (myself included). There's a lot of interesting things we can build upon with Lukas' character, besides him maybe having a crush on the main character.

Like his passion for writing. He started logging his portal hallway travels in a random book he found at a murder mansion, which shows off his resourcefulness, a trait that he's been told he has.

Or maybe how he always wanted to be the sort of person that Jesse became, but never really quite got there, which could serve as an incredibly interesting parallel to Aiden, if written correctly. Lukas just tried it out, did his best, and then decided that adventure wasn't something that he'd actively pursue. He would still help save the world if it needed saving, though.

There's also him being a pretty good archer. We can pull symbolism from this. Archers in fiction are usually depicted as the weaker, more brainy sort of character. So often do we just totally gloss over him being pretty smart. And the whole "weak archer" thing is sort of brought up when Romeo keeps bullying the crap out of Lukas for being "weak." Even though Lukas had literally proved himself time and time again, learning to be someone reliable. Could it have been Romeo resurfacing old doubts of his?

Or maybe there's Lukas' whole background character arc in season 2, which mainly serves as a conclusion to his original character arc of learning to not be a doormat. The dude starts a rebellion against his closest friend, who could literally kill him in an instant, which is a really awesome contrast to how he didn't stand up to Aiden at all while they considered each other friends, despite being the "leader" of the Ocelots.

What about how in Episode 3, Lukas was more scared of the Endermen than Olivia was, despite Olivia saying that she was scared of them? That's a really interesting use of the "show" going against the "tell." It not only shows how Lukas isn't really his "cool guy" persona, but it also shows us that Olivia is way more capable than she believes that she is.

Something I don't really ever see is people discussing how Lukas kind of joined Jesse's party after a long time of not interacting. How does he adjust to things?

Or what about all of the trauma this man has? In not-really-sequential order, he's been possessed, possibly been shoved off of a floating island in a murder attempt, been accused of murder, lost his entire friend group in the apocalypse, literally died, and that's just the main things from the first season. Can't he bond with others that aren't romantic interests over these?

Don't get me wrong, I love shipping. It's really fun to say "Hey, wouldn't it be interesting if these characters were in a romantic relationship?" sometimes, but we could also have more non-shipping stuff. Especially because the source material was incredibly focused on platonic love for one's friends. Why are we (in reference to fandom in general) so against people wanting to protect and care for each other for reasons other than thinking the other is hot? Friendship is this awesome thing that we have, and so often do we just throw it away.

I'm not saying that you need to just quit shipping characters and only appreciate friendships. I'm just saying that we can also emphasize platonic relationships alongside romantic ones. Let characters bond as friends while discussing the adventures they went on. Let them learn to trust each other and work as a team.

I could also add on about how characters similar to Lukas often get simplified down to "(traumatized) cinnamon roll who loves their partner and that's all there is," when there is much more to them. It's an interesting dynamic, yes, but it would be so cool to see other character traits amplified.

Lukas is a logical, genuine guy. He wants to help people, but he's not as capable as others, like Jesse. Instead of being salty about that, like Aiden, Lukas simply worked with his team, where they balanced out each other's strengths and weaknesses. He tried out adventuring, but ended up settling down and writing books about the travels of him and his friends. He used to be more of a pushover, but he became someone who won't let people he cares about be bullied, because he was once bullied too, by someone he called his friend.

And uh, that's about it. Can we see more of Lukas that isn't just him being with Jesse, please?

Hottest hot take is that people need to stop drawing Lukas ONLY with Jesse. Lukas is his own character and, in my opinion, one of the most explored characters in mcsm. Seeing him being belittled into only being a love interest for Jesse in the fandom is so stupid.. It's like you guys are only drawing/writing him just so he can be a love interest.

I NEED to see people focus on his depth more with characters OTHER than Jesse for once.

More dysfunctional dynamics —

Arthur's favourite is Alfred, but years of bitterness over Alfred's revolution means he doesn't treat him very well even when they finally get over that hurdle.

Meanwhile, Arthur thinks of Matthew as 'ex colony' and 'ally' and not much else, yet takes his side whenever there's conflict between the brothers, and treats Matthew like an equal in a way he only does with Alfred when forced to, and doesn't bother doing with Australia and New Zealand at all.

This is terrible for Matthew, and he doesn't realise it until it's too late.

A younger Matthew basks in the attention and flaunts it at his newly independent brother — to prove he made the right choice by not leaving, to work off his righteous anger for the hurt Alfred caused Arthur. For a time, Matthew really believes he's now Arthur's favourite, and he thrives.

Arthur, of course, is lavishing Matthew with attention to make a struggling Alfred regret his decision to leave. Matthew has new, comfortable clothes, and Alfred has to patch up the holes in his scratchy old shirts himself. Arthur spends nearly all his time with Matthew in the years after Alfred's revolution.

But eventually, Arthur's attention wanes. He has other colonies, more valuable ones, and Matthew doesn't have that something that makes Arthur love him despite a lack of riches. (Whatever Alfred had, Matthew thinks.)

In the meantime, Alfred's bonded with Francis, and their relationship is real. Francis treats Alfred like a son and a friend.

Arthur starts treating Matthew with polite disinterest, now that he's no longer trying to make Alfred jealous. Still, the physical dynamic between Arthur and Matthew doesn't change. Arthur treats Matthew better than he treats anyone else because he's used to doing that - there's just no feeling behind it. (Eventually, of course, that polite disinterest turns into a real acquaintance, a comfortable dynamic, but never the affection Matthew craves.)

It alienates Matthew from Australia and New Zealand, too, who see Arthur's treatment as a sign of love and favour they felt they didn't receive. They joke around with Alfred about Arthur being a jerk and then stop when they notice Matthew in the room.

Matthew can't say anything, not when Arthur never interrupts him when he shares his ideas. When they meet for breakfast every month and Arthur takes all his advice into consideration.

Matthew has Arthur's respect but lost out on everything else — a closer relationship with Francis, a camaraderie with Australia and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, no one thinks Alfred has Arthur's respect, but Matthew knows he has his heart, and Francis' affection, and a friendship with Australia and New Zealand.

How can Matthew not resent his brother for having everything he wants?
