hey all! this is the project i've been working on for the past 2 years, and i'm so excited to finally share it with you. there's tons more work hidden in the pdf itself, so i encourage you to go take a look! :)

It is my pleasure to finally be able to share with you the project that I've been working on for the past 2 years!

For my final project for my masters degree, I decided to create a visual development artbook for an animated movie adaptation of the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. This 100+ page long book contains all the research that I put into this project, from sketches and concept art to final designs and illustrations, as well as explanations of my creative process.

I am aware that the timing is not ideal, but I promise that this has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming Netflix adaptation! That adaptation wasn't announced until after I'd completed my project, and I had absolutely no idea that it was happening. This is a fully fan-made project, and has no affiliation with Scott Westerfeld whatsoever.

All that being said: I hope you enjoy! This was a very long labour of love, and I am so so happy to finally share it with you all. These books hold a very special place in my heart, and it is my sincerest hope that my work manages to do them justice.

hi! your face studies from April 4th for the Gaang seemed really influenced by Chip Trillino’s art, and I was wondering if you might want to credit them on the post or a reblog?

I DO love Chip's beautiful art, it's genuinely an honour to be compared!! but I promise I've never directly referenced her designs (though it wouldn't surprise me that mine have some similarities since I've spent time swooning over hers 💕), or anyone else's interpretations for that matter.

I don't know if it would be fair to credit just one source of inspiration, when in reality I'm surrounding myself with so many incredible creators that serve to stir the brain soup and fuel me to make art of my own. I certainly never set out to copy anyone, and rest assured I would credit if I ever posted any directly referenced studies.

I will happily share a non-exhaustive list of a few ATLA artists who regularly floor me with their interpretations! @chiptrillino-art you've mentioned, @sevrinve, @aakiwa, @soncee, @beelze0-0, @fioleespring, @fanfic-gremlin-ft-trauma, @bleekay, @petricorah, @ash-and-starlight, @comradekatara, @dickpuncherdraws, but there are lots of others too, there's a bit of an ATLA renaissance going on atm!

And that's not even mentioning fic writers, whose brilliant ideas have also seeped into my subconscious. The real-world-culture perspectives are incredible. I've read so many now...

Today’s zukka week prompt “swords” once again inspired by the lovely @dickpuncherdraws‘s art:

Sokka had seen Zuko firebend plenty of times before. Of course, he never really had the time to stop and consider just what it was he was seeing before.

 But now, when Zuko trained with Aang, Sokka liked to observe. He told himself it was a professional interest, one warrior observing another. He told himself it was so he could monitor Aang’s progress – a leader should know those kinds of things. He told himself that if even he had a hard time believing those reasons, then spirits what must the others think?

 Still, that didn’t stop him watching. And as he watched, he noticed.

 There was no denying he was skilled – perhaps not the best firebender he had ever seen, but certainly he ranked among them. But as Zuko leaned on the training of his younger years to pass along to Aang, Sokka could sense it. Between this Zuko, the one who stood before him now, and the one who practiced those forms, who had learned them in his younger years under the threat of failure and judgment, there was always tension. Tension in his muscles, in the set of his brow, his movements and attitude equally rigid. They still fought for position within him sometimes, the scared little boy and the enlightened defector. Maybe they always would.

 But when Zuko practiced with his dao swords, Sokka could hardly believe he was the same person. Where rigid technique and discipline had been was replaced by fluidity and grace. He would call it elegant, if he didn’t know the danger of dismissing it as nothing more than that. This, Sokka knew, was the real Zuko. The one who had fought for his place in the world, who had stumbled and fallen and gotten back up every time. This was something he had done for no one but himself.

 Sokka could relate. And for his part, wanted to feed off that energy.  He wanted to learn from Zuko just as much as Aang did. It took some convincing, but eventually Zuko came around. Sokka wasn’t sure if that was a mark of his determination, or if Zuko just wanted to shut him up. Either way, he was happy.

 When they started, Zuko wouldn’t let them use real swords. But Sokka convinced him on that, too. How was he to learn the balance of it, the force it took to wield, if he wasn’t allowed to use his sword?

 On that point, he would later admit, he had miscalculated.

 His error lay in that he had forgotten to factor in a few things. Namely, Zuko himself. Not the swordsman, but the boy. The look on Zuko’s face – the concentration, the crooked, confident smirk, the way he slicked back his hair from his face, bringing Sokka’s attention for the first time to the glint in his golden eyes, the low chuckle that told Sokka that he had him right where he wanted him – were far more distracting than he had anticipated. It was inevitable, really, that he let his focus slip, and with it his defense.

 One second was all it took. One second with his guard down, and Zuko’s blade tasted blood. And Sokka found out what it was like to swear in front of a prince.

 Zuko’s face changed in an instant. As Sokka clapped his hand over the cut, which was long and clean but not really too deep, Zuko threw his swords to the ground, showering Sokka in apologies. Sokka assured him he was fine, really, he was, but the blood trickling from beneath his fingers didn’t do much to convince him.

 In the end, Sokka let Zuko see to his arm. It was slightly embarrassing for him – after all, the swords had been his idea, but it seemed important to Zuko. So, rather than point out that Katara could heal him up good as new with little more than a wave of her hand, he sat as still as he could while Zuko worked his own magic with his bandages.

 When he had finished, and left Sokka alone to ruminate on the way having Zuko fuss over him, and having his strong hands turn careful as he touched him made his stomach turn over nearly as inelegantly as he must have looked today sparing with Zuko, Sokka realized that while Zuko might not be nearly as good a healer, he preferred his brand of healing to Katara’s.
