SPECIMEN LOG: 001247

It's all over. Cirrus won. Tov survived in some kind of fucked up, crazy miracle that makes her eyes dart around the room whenever it's brought up, her smile all that more forced whenever she answers a question on her hard-fought survival. She's never been a fighter, which is what makes it sting all the more, a bitter taste left on the tongue when that rage flashes in her eyes and she takes someone to task with the blade of her tongue. Dian and Tov are running interference as they pretend to date and get an excuse to have sanctioned time to spend together, talking shit and laughing when they can manage, both of them having lost some of the luster in their smiles.

It all should be over and yet time passes on, ever quicker, ever slower. Delicate hands and flashes of black and white haunt Nyx's dreams, flames burning skin and hair and bone, the air sticky sweet with smoke. Auburn curls spilling into bright amber eyes, a weary smile in an attempt to reassure as blood bubbles and dribbles down pale lips. Fear in aquamarine eyes as she pushes back a lacy veil, unable to fully grapple with what she's just done, who she's just killed. How she ran away and started over, finding a child and building a home up around them. How she went missing and the body could never be found save for a blood splatter on the floor of the apartment she once lived in. In a room that he has come to know, a ceiling that he has practically memorized and a bed that he calls his own, Nyx should not wake up panting, his heart pounding in his chest, scream already spilled from cracked lips. Yet, he continues trudging onward, ignoring the ghosts whose hands linger on his shoulders as best as he can.

Grief is unbecoming, no matter how heavy it weighs. Nyx has long gotten over any delusions that he needs to be emotionally stable, that he needs to be everyone else's anchor, but to linger so much on past, what has already been said and done, what can never be changed, it's stupid and he knows it. After all, season forty has just begun and already the first round is over, second underway. The first loser disappeared into the night sky in a mess of blood and shrieking pain. The first winner disappeared much the same, making a bit of a lose-lose for the Alien Stage committee.

Not as if they really care, though.

It's not as if Nyx has the time to care all that much, either. Save for the pit of fear in his stomach, growing ever deeper with every second closer they get to the third round, to the round where his beloved sunrise will finally face the music, he is all but solely focused on the present moment.

Solei is dying.

It's been happening for a long time, or at least, it doesn't seem new. Building up inside of them and breaking down the chimerical, painful form that Solei was given against their will by their bastard of an owner, their own body fighting against itself and the aberration of their avian adaptations, the feathers growing through the skin and the pores that they sprout from bleeding, their arms scaling over just like the hard, protective skin of their talons, making their hands all the more shaky. The shadows around their eyes have been deepening for months and at the start, Nyx just thought they were sleeping poorly, haunted too by the nightmares at plague even his waking moments. After about a week or so, he realized the truth, having caught them in the middle of a coughing fit where blood stained their lips and a dullness glazed over their eyes.

That was months ago, and now they have been confined to their nest, IV stuck into their arm and a respirator over their mouth, breathing for them as their eyelashes flutter, relegated to a cycle of a waking and an oblivion that are so similar that one could not tell them apart. Aurien is desperate for a solution, a cure, anything, to save her partner who she has already lost once and who she has resolved not to lose again. She spends nights here, by Solei's side, and days out and about, trying to find answers to a problem that Nyx doubts has any. Maybe he's just become jaded, cynical, after his brushes with death but he knows that Solei shares his opinion, that there is nothing to do, that they cannot be saved, which is a little bit of solace in the coldness of the night.

It's a horrible, acidic thing to even think, nonetheless swallow. He should have faith in them, one of his closest friends who has already cheated death once. He should have faith, he knows, but he has known other who have cheated death, and he knows what happened after they flew too close to the sun.

They fell to the sea, and they drowned.

anyway backtracking to 44 laura, i love mark's little baseball fidget game in the movie bc 1) in the book he was supposed to go to a baseball game that day but the commissioner was on vacation and the deputy commissioner was in charge and he hated mark and gave him the murder case out of spite so he couldn't go to the game 2) there's surviving stills from a deleted scene where mark literally takes shelby and waldo to the baseball game 3) in the book laura has an autographed dodger's ball on her desk that mark is super charmed by and they get to talk about baseball together 4) i like the way the movie introduces this piece that references all these little moments from the book!!!! like that's so nice and fun to me!!!!!!!!! but it's also. 5) mark is very fidgety (he constantly jingles the keys to laura's apartment when he holds them too) and specifies that the game "keeps [him] calm" and in the book it's more explicit that mark was very affected by the siege of babylon and was in the hospital for fourteen months after getting shot in the leg (and some of the other detectives are still in the hospital) and walks with a noticeable limp and hasn't taken a murder case at all since (just political cases or smaller crime) (which is another reason the deputy commissioner gives him the case) and idk. traumatized man super uncomfortable with this case has a neat little fidget toy

The Ghost of You is Close to Me - SPECIMEN LOG: 001247 (NYX POV)

In the few days after the ink dries, the skin tingles like a sunburn. Muscles within the arm tense and relax in an effort to withhold the blunt fingernails who beg to claw away the flesh, to make it bleed, to free the prickling feeling from within. Nyx’s hands twitch absently as he feels the faint burning pain on his back, an itch he cannot scratch. Last time Nyx went to visit Ryu and Ji-Woo, Ryu finished the piece on Nyx’s back that is meant to represent Solei, a stylized sun with a black hole at the center. It was hours underneath the burning prickle of the needle, drilling ink into his skin, but he knew that it didn’t measure up to the pain that Solei must have felt in their final moments. They suffered for so long, their sickness rotting them from within, their body unable to fight back against itself. Six hours is nothing in the grand scheme of things, a paltry attempt at penance.

(For a long time, Nyx considered an owl but in the end, he thought that Solei would prefer something that actually represented them rather than the way their image was warped by Ouro.)

He has tattoos for everyone that he’s lost. The permanent reminder of those who he’s loved on his skin.

Nestled adjacent to his shoulder-blade, red spider lily for Himei sitting beside the Tallis’ harp, together in life, together in death. They were a binary star system, revolving around each other, with Tov as their beloved orbital, basked in their radiance. An ace of spades on his right shoulder with a phoenix flying underneath it, Castor and Kyo placed next to each other in one last attempt at apology. (I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry I love you I’m sorry I love you I’m sorry.)

An aloe vera plant nearby his wrist, for Vera, who disappeared a few months ago suddenly, and her child with her. Nyx spent one of those months looking for any trace of her but wherever she went, she covered her tracks. Eventually, he concluded with a pang in his chest, that she must not want to be found. It was still a war with himself, to give her up.

Older than Vera’s, old enough that he forgets it’s even there, sits a bundle of TNT on his lower back. It’s not the most obvious that it’s for Lang, who died in a fiery blaze live on stage. Sometimes, when he closes his eyes, he can still see her burning up. Ryu gave him a look when he requested it and commented that it was kind of a grim reminder. Nyx could only shrug and agree. The thing is, he knows that it’s what Lang would want, that discomfort like a film on top of the skin, like eyes on the back of your neck.

Maybe it’s fitting that only in the wake of her death he’s realized just what she meant to him. She was supposed to live. She was afraid to die.

Lang is the hollowness in Aurien’s eyes. She’s the fireworks across the skyline in the night. She’s the creaking of the door at night, in the darkness, when you could swear you saw a shadow in the hall.

Solei is the warmth left behind on the sheets when they leave and you wake up just afterwards, barely missing them, two ships passing in the night. They were the dregs of a cup of tea, clinging to the bottom, still amber and golden. Solei is the soft feathers fluttering through the air, catching the sunlight.

These days, Aurien won’t meet Nyx’s eyes, even when they’re speaking to one another. She hasn’t been quite the same since everything ended. On the day the sun sputtered out, something in her died, too. Solei, always the center of her universe, disappearing into that great night from which no one can escape, well, let’s just say that Nyx understands.

Losing. Losing, he keeps losing everyone, they crumble away into dust in his hands, they slip through his fingers like silt in water, he can’t hold onto them no matter how hard he tries and lord, does he try. He’s practically losing his mind at this point. He won’t let himself lose anyone else. He doesn’t want a crescent moon behind the shell of his ear. He doesn’t want a lantern over his heart, or a constellation band around his wrist. He doesn’t want, he doesn’t want, he doesn’t want-

“Nyx!” Tov startles him out of his quickly spiraling thoughts, snapping her fingers in front of his face. She scowls at him, her lower lip jutting out in a shadow of a pout. “Y’know, when you came to see me, I thought you wanted to talk but you haven’t exactly said anything, so I guess not.” Right, even if Nyx just wanted to spend time with his sister, he did come here with a question in mind. He rubs at his face tiredly and lets out a sigh.

“Sorry, just,” he mumbles, struggling to find the words. “Thinking. Solei’s tattoo is done and it’s made me a bit melancholic.” Tov perks up slightly, her dark eyes gleaming with interest.

“Oo can I see it?” She asks, her excitement plain to see. He nods and peels off his jacket, his backless bodysuit coming in handy in a moment like this. Tov moves around behind him to observe the intricate, stylized sun, and he can absently feel her fingertips tracing the outline of it. “It definitely reminds me of them. You made a good choice.”

“Thanks.”

“What’s the bundle of cylinders?” Tov pokes at Lang’s tattoo.

“It’s dynamite, for Lang,” Nyx answers, glancing back at Tov. Her eyes widen slightly.

“Oh. Kind of morbid,” she remarks with a wry smile. “But fitting.” Nyx grunts an affirmative, shrugging his jacket back on.

“I,” he hesitates for a moment before shaking his head, steeling himself. “I wanted to ask you if. You think it’s worth trying to help Asahi.”

“Asahi? The contestant from season 40?” Tov asks, tilting her head to the side.

“Yeah, she’s, she’s my daughter,” Nyx explains. Tov’s eyes widen further, surprise obvious on her face. “She probably doesn’t want anything to do with me but I can’t help it, I want to. . . reach out to her.” Tov sighs and shakes her head, a smile creeping across her lips. She reaches out and takes Nyx’s hand, squeezing it.

“You should do it. She can always refuse you,” she says. “But this way, at least you tried, right?” Nyx meets Tov’s eyes, hesitating before he lets out a sigh.

“Right.”

Character Intimacy Levels: S39 Pt. 1

Based on the character intimacy percentages from the art book. Covering my characters’ intimacy levels with characters they have notable relationships with within and outside of their classes. This is part 1 for my S39 kids, then there’ll be Non-Competitors (Eddy and Itsaso), S40 (Naz and Yael), and S41 (Light and Halo).

Eddy: 85% We met under the worst circumstances. Maybe that’s why I’ve grown to love you so fast.

is anyone else unironically watching "virgin river"? it's my middle age lady comfort show. it's absolutely terrible, but i keep watching because i also want to live in the middle of the woods in a cabin. i could do without all the drama though. i'm glad charmaine finally birthed her twins, but i'm so annoyed that jack and mel are friendly with her. she lied to jack and tried to destroy his relationship with mel. i would not be as generous.

i'm still sad lily died, even though she played dana on "sanctuary" and i have trouble separating the two. calvin and his weird accent kill me. it's so bad. i remember him as det lee scanlon from "medium", whom i liked. and dr janet fraiser plays the local ho and i love it. (remember when she played rowena's rival olivette on "supernatural" and she got turned into a hamster [or was it a guinea pig? i don't remember]) she's got a younger man and i hope she gets her bag. and diane lockhart's protestor one night stand from "the good fight" plays the town doc. eta: and dee from "battlestar galactica"! i knew there was someone i was forgetting. as well as colin lawrence who showed up in "sanctuary" and lexa doig from "andromeda".

i think it's a given once you reach a certain age that whenever you watch anything, you have to list the acting history of all the actors onscreen at any given moment. nicola cavendish, who plays connie, was nurse owens in "the x-files" episode one breath. she was the angel/nurse who talked to scully while she was in a coma.

one of the things i like about watching shows and movies is determining if they are filmed in and around vancouver. "virgin river" is. "sanctuary" was. in fact, vera's burger shack, which showed up in an episode, is one of my favourite take-out places.

if you've ever seen "travelers" with eric mccormack, the first scene of the first episode of season 1 was filmed in the library where i used to work! there's a shot looking down from the fourth floor. when i worked there, i saw the rock filmed the pearl of cinema history, "skyscraper" at the civic hotel while it was under construction. the movie used a lot of cgi to make it look like a completed skyscraper.

ok enough rambling! winter break is coming and i need to make tv and fic plans. i'm looking forward to the time off to just fangirl.

There is the trope with doctors being the scariest thing if they get angry. Because of all the knowledge they have about the body.

What are your medic OCs like when they are pissed off and where would you put them in a 1-10 scale where 1 "Eh... ok doc..." and 10 is "Holy shit! I'm gonna die..."?

How convenient that I have (currently) exactly 10 official medic ocs in the Junko AU (these ones). I ranked them by imagining how they'd deal with troublesome patients.

The nice doctors:

1 - Petro is the least scary and most patient of the bunch, you'd need to break serious hospital safety rules, disturb the staff AND insult his sister to actually get him angry enough to be scary.

2 - Dante is also very very calm and controlled most of the time, but can also be strict in making sure his patients are safe and well cared.

3 - Kyouharu learned everything from Dante, he's so pleasant and kind to everyone that most people forget he's also a taijutsu master, and will use force to get things in order. He'll just go back to smiling right away so usually people only get shocked and confused, but not really scared.

4 - Diane tries not to scare people and be very gentle, but they're not exactly a trained doctor and will remind anyone that they're doing them a favor by helping treat them and can stop and leave anytime (Most likely won't, but activating the byakugan doesn't help soften the threat).

5 - Yuriko doesn't care about being sweet and polite to her patients, she's used to healing people in the battlefield and will get straight to the point when needed. She can be quite forceful and intimidating if anyone gets in the way of her work.

The scary doctors:

6 - Irene has a temper and her being scary when angry is just who she is. The fact that she does have medical knowledge without being properly trained only adds to it, but not many people actually know about that.

7 - Junko is not a doctor, she was introduced to the basics of it by Kyouharu, but overall she's not the best option to heal someone. And that's probably what makes her scarier, because if she's using what she knows, she's not using it to heal you.

8 - Suzuyasu is naturally intimidating, the rumors and gossip don't help his case. He can be scary on purpose and, like Yuriko, has been in far too many battlefields to know when to be forceful. All that aside he's a skilled doctor and is even great with children.

9 - Neno is neither a doctor nor here to treat you. She's only interested in poisons and if someone decided you're her patient, then you're in for some uncomfortable time, at best. She might actually get hired by the torture and interrogation team one day.

10 - Vera is probably the last person you'd want to find strapping you to a hospital bed. She doesn't need to get angry to be scary, much less if you know who she is. Traitor, assassin, crazy doctor... basically, you'll need to be tied down not to run away.
