Chinatown staple Diamond Bakery closes as owner retires, July 2, 2023
'Diamond Bakery has been a Calgary favourite and certainly a Chinatown go-to for BBQ pork buns, egg tarts and deep-fried pork dumplings,' said Ward 7 Coun. Terry Wong
A decades-long fixture in Calgaryâs Chinatown is closing shop, as its owner celebrates moving into retirement. In a social media post, the Chinatown Business Improvement Area commended owner Henry Chan for his 30 years running the bakery. âHenry Chan is one of the kindest and most hard-working merchants you will find in Chinatown and we wish him all the best in his retirement,â they wrote. Ward 7 Coun. Terry Wong is a former executive director of the Chinatown BIA. He said Diamond Bakery will be missed, but that there will be an opportunity for a new business to make its home in Chinatown. âDiamond Bakery has been a Calgary favourite and certainly a Chinatown go-to for BBQ pork buns, egg tarts and deep-fried pork dumplings that weâre going to miss,â Wong said. âWe wish the owner a great retirement and look forward to another great Chinatown cultural offering.â City council recently approved a plan that aims to grow the historic Chinatown while preserving the downtown areaâs cultural heritage. That plan will involve new infrastructure development, including mixed-use residential-commercial buildings and public spaces, with developers needing to meet certain Asian esthetic requirements in their designs. Jason Herring for the Calgary Herald
Further reading:
My go-to for Hong Kong bakery staples like pineapple buns, coconut and egg tarts, and cocktail buns. They had an even wider selection of when I was a kid: çź˝äťçł, ç˝çłçł, fried curry beef bun, wedding pastries, and until the pandemic their selection of mooncakes. The original must-have was their large palmiers--the kind a kid should probably split in two but didn't because there was always the promise you'd have another next week.
"Staple" doesn't quite illustrate the institutional position, it was the oldest independent Chinese bakery in the city and provided a very specific sense of home for so many of us. čćż, his staff, and Diamond Bakery are an integral part of the story Calgary's Chinatown. We were all so lucky to have shared in their warmth.

The Sparkling Allure: the Popularity of Diamond Jewellery
Diamond jewellery holds an enduring allure that transcends time, cherished for its  brilliance and durability, which adorn moments of significance. From elegant engagement rings symbolizing everlasting love to dazzling necklaces and earrings adding sophistication, the timeless elegance of diamond jewellery captivates hearts worldwide.
Beyond their beauty, diamonds symbolize endurance, making them a cherished investment and a symbol of enduring relationships. Whether as a fashion statement or a token of affection, diamond jewellery in Calgary continues to sparkle as a symbol of timeless elegance and lasting value.
Most Impressive Natural Material
Undoubtedly, diamond jewellery is made of one of the most impressive natural materials on Earth. Their lucid colouring has particular physical attributes and comes with a higher thermal conductivity than any other gems. Due to this reason, diamonds are used to make fashionable jewellery and serve several industrial purposes.
Durability and Symbolism
Diamonds are among the hardest natural substances on Earth, renowned for their resilience and resistance to wear and tear. This characteristic has imbued diamonds with symbolic significance, representing strength, permanence, and enduring love.
Historical Significance
Diamonds have been prized for centuries, with their allure transcending cultures and civilizations. Their association with royalty, wealth, and power has further cemented their position as symbols of status and sophistication.
Timeless Elegance
Without a doubt, the timeless appeal of these stunning gemstones lies in their timeless elegance. Whether you want to craft a necklace, bracelet or ring, the brilliance of diamond jewellery complements the fashion and style effortlessly; it also adds a touch of sophistication.
Cultural Significance
Diamond jewellery holds significant symbolism across various cultures around the world. The stones are popular for their purity, associated with prosperity, and used in traditional ceremonies.
Valuable and Precious
Remember that diamonds are not found everywhere; the experts carefully restrict the supply and set the price too high, so the consumers think that diamond jewellery is a priceless commodity.
Appropriate Stone for Both Sexes
Most people choose this amazing stone for several occasions. The best part is that both genders can wear diamond jewellery, which means the stones have a unisex appearance. As a result, they can contribute to outstanding popularity.

Hiiii! Could I possibly get some cute fluff of Matthew Tkachuk coming home after a long road trip and all he wants to do is cuddle or nap with you? Maybe he possibly also came back with a ring and proposes? Thank you <3
Here With a Ring
w/ Matthew Tkachuk
Matthew knows how sad I get when he leaves for road trips, but being in Florida is especially hard. This being our first year in Florida I havenât found who I want to be here yet. In Calgary, I was closer to home, I had friends there, and I had better knowledge of the city. Sleeping alone is the hardest part. Matthew knows I donât particularly love the situation here so he makes sure he Facetimes and calls whenever he can to relieve some loneliness.Â
Matthew called me tonight as I was sitting on the bathroom counter applying my blue face mask. I quickly jump off the counter and run to the other room to answer his call. âHey babeâ I say quickly, âOU! Y/n that is not your color babeâ Matthew laughs through the phone, I roll my eyes before saying âItâs a face mask meanyâ. âI know, I know. I am just teasingâ Matthew smiles through the phone at me. âListen there is some airplane troubles so Iâm not going to be home until a little later, so donât wait upâ, âOkay, are you sure? I can still come and get you. I donât mindâ I say back. âMy parents wanted to know if you wanted to go down to there place for supper, so you should stay and do that!â Matthew says back to me through the phone. His parents are in town tonight and for the rest of the weekend because Brady is in town tomorrow night because the Senators play the Panthers. âOh they will be here for supper? I didnât think they were flying in until tomorrow morningâ I say, âThey decided to come in a little early because they were originally suppose to go out for supper with Taryn, Brady and Emma; since Brady will be in town a day earlier. They want you to joinâ, âOkay, that sounds fun!â. âPerfect! I gotta go now but I will get my mom or Taryn to send you the address of the reservationâ, âOkay bye I love youâ, âI love you so much more Y/nâ he says before hanging up.
I go over and take a quick nap. When I wake up I see a text from Taryn with the time and location in which they were all meeting. She also tells me to dress nice because it is a pretty upscale restaurant. I look through my closet and pull out a tight mid calf length dress with a halter top. I fix my makeup and curl my long hair, before grabbing my black pumps and running out the door.Â
I drive to the location which is located right on the beach. I get out and hand my keys to valet before walking to the from door. I do to the hostess and say, âHi, I am here for a reservation, it is under Tkachuk, they should be here alreadyâ, The host says âY/n?â, I confusingly nod my head yes and he says âfollow meâ. I follow him and he walks to the back of the restaurant, exiting to the deck that over looks the beach, before going down the stairs that leads to a fairly private beach he turns to me ans says âyou may want to take your shoes off missâ. I bent down taking my shoes off carrying them down the stairs. Once my toes hit the sand I see a small circle table for two and roamntically set on the beach. The host leads me and pulls the chair out for me to sit. âMr. Tkachuk told me you must be blindfoldedâ the host says to me blindfolding me leaving me on a beach alone. I canât help but laugh to myself thinking this has to be a prank.
All of a sudden someone behind me takes my blindfold of and I see my boyfriend with a bouquet of roses. âHiâ he says handing me the bouquet of roses. I take them and set them on the table before getting up and embracing him âWhat is all this for?â I say pulling away. âY/n you know I am not great with expressing myselfâ Matthew starts obviously very nervous. âI love you and I want to be with you forever. Will you marry me?â, My jaw drops as Matthew drops to one knee revealing a huge diamond ring in a small blue Tiffany box. I choke out some tears before I nod my head very fast. Matthew jumps up and plants a kiss on my lips before we hear a bunch of cheering coming behind us at the restaurant on the second floor of the deck. Soon his whole family, and my whole family come down to share their congratulations.Â
After dinner Matthew and I walk hand and hand on the beach very much over dressed but I didnât care. Matthew plops down on the sand pulling me down with him. We play fight in the sand until we just bring it in close to each other and take in the moment. âI canât believe you did all this for me?â, âWhy? Your amazing. I take that as a successful surprise?â Matthew laughs looking down at me. âThe best surprise:â I smile back at him

Happy Canada Day!
Discussions about regionalism in esports tend to be fairly reductive - this is especially true in the LCS, where "local" talent can often be reduced to Americans and American culture. Despite its many flaws, Canada has a vibrant history and flourishing esport industry in its own right. Here's every LCS talent and player that I could find evidence for that originated from Canada.
To celebrate Canada Day, I'd highly encourage you to donate to the Canadian Red Cross in order to help those affected by the wildfires in Alberta and Eastern Canada.
