you’ve been by buck’s side for as long as you could remember. from scraped knees and childhood pranks to the rollercoaster of adulthood, he’d always been your best friend. the two of you were inseparable, a bond forged through years of shared triumphs and heartbreaks.
no matter what life threw at him, and there had been plenty, you stayed.
it wasn’t always easy. buck’s tendency to charge headfirst into situations, consequences be damned, often left you picking up the pieces. but you didn’t mind. he’d do the same for you without hesitation, and that’s what mattered.
you’d always have his back, even when you knew he was wrong. of course, that didn’t mean you’d let him get away with it. you’d tell him exactly what you thought once the dust settled, but only after making sure he knew you were in his corner.
the firehouse was quieter than usual that morning. the buzz of conversation and movement had faded, leaving behind a quiet that wasn’t quite still. strained, like everyone was holding their breath as soon as evan stepped foot in the building.
buck had walked into the kitchen with his jaw set, his bag slung over his shoulder, and his firehouse blues perfectly pressed. he was here to fight for his place back on the team, back in the field where he belonged. but it wasn’t going well.
“buck, you’re still on blood thinners,” bobby said, his voice firm but tinged with concern. “i can’t in good conscience let you back out there. it’s too risky.”
buck’s face was a mix of frustration and annoyance. “bobby, i’ve done everything you’ve asked! the physical therapy, the psych evals, the check ups. i’m ready! you know i am.”
from where you stood, you could see his hands curling into fists at his sides. the passion in his voice tugged at your heart, but you knew bobby wasn’t going to budge. the captain’s concern for his team often manifested as unyielding protectiveness, and buck was no exception.
when bobby’s gaze flicked to you, silently asking for support, you pushed off the counter and walked toward the brewing storm.
“hey,” you said softly, stepping between them and placing a hand lightly on buck’s arm. his muscles were taut beneath your touch, and his eyes burned with frustration as they met yours. “buck… let’s take a minute.”
“don’t,” he warned, his voice tight.
you gave him a look. one he knew too well. it said you weren’t here to argue, but you weren’t backing down either. turning back to bobby, you said, “look, bobby, i’ve seen how hard he’s worked. he’s been pushing himself every single day to prove he’s ready. can we at least acknowledge that?”
bobby’s expression softened, but his stance didn’t change. “i do acknowledge it. but acknowledging it doesn’t change the fact that his body isn’t ready for the risks out there. this isn’t about effort. it’s about safety.”
buck let out a frustrated sound and ran a hand through his hair. you could see the argument building in his mind, the stubbornness that had been both his greatest strength and his biggest flaw since you’d known him.
“let’s go,” you said firmly, tugging gently on his arm. he resisted for a moment but then sighed heavily and followed you toward the locker room. the silence between you was heavy, broken only by the sound of the door clicking shut behind you.
you turned to face him, crossing your arms. “alright. let’s talk.”
“what is there to talk about?” he snapped, pacing the small space. “bobby doesn’t trust me. he’s treating me like i’m fragile, like i’m–”
“like you almost died?” you interrupted gently. the words made him stop in his tracks, his eyes darting to yours.
“that’s not fair,” he said quietly.
“isn’t it?” you countered, stepping closer. “buck, you were struck by lightning. do you even realise how lucky you are to be standing here right now? and you’re still recovering. i know you hate hearing that, but it’s the truth.”
“i’m fine,” he insisted, but his voice lacked the conviction it usually held.
you reached out, placing a hand on his arm again, this time to steady him as much as to comfort him. “you’re getting there, buck. and i’m so proud of you for how far you’ve come. but you’re not invincible. you can’t rush this just because you feel ready. your body needs time.”
he looked away, his jaw clenching. “i just… i need to be out there. i need to feel like myself again. this… sitting around, waiting… it’s killing me.”
“i know,” you said softly. “but you know what would actually kill me? if something happened to you because you pushed yourself too hard, too fast. buck, i…” you hesitated, your voice catching. “i can’t lose you.”
his eyes snapped back to yours, and for a moment, the weight of your words hung between you. slowly, his shoulders sagged, and the fire in his eyes dimmed to a simmer.
“i… i just feel so useless,” he admitted.
“you’re not useless,” you said firmly, stepping closer and wrapping your arms around him. he stiffened for a moment before melting into your embrace, his forehead dropping to your shoulder.
your hand moved to the back of his head, “you’re far from it .” your fingers threading gently through his hair, while your other hand rubbed soothing circles on his back.
“you’re one of the strongest people i know,” you murmured. “but being strong doesn’t mean you have to do everything on your own. let us help you. let me help you.”
he let out a shaky breath, his arms tightening around you. “you’re always here for me,” he said, his voice muffled against your shoulder.
“always,” you promised.
for a long moment, you just held him, letting the quiet of the locker room wrap around you both. eventually, he pulled back, his eyes red but determined.
“okay,” he said. “i’ll wait. for now.”
you smiled, reaching up to brush a stray tear from his cheek. “that’s all i’m asking. one step at a time, buck. we’ll get there. together.”
he nodded, a small, grateful smile tugging at his lips. and for the first time that day, the tension seemed to ease.
he lets out a long breath. “you know,” he said, glancing at you with the faintest smirk, “you could’ve just said i’m being an idiot and saved us both a lot of time.”
you raised an eyebrow, walking with him toward the station doors. “oh, trust me, i was tempted. but i figured the heartfelt speech would sink in better.”
buck chuckled softly, shaking his head. “you’re too good to me.”
“don’t get used to it,” you teased, nudging him with your shoulder. “next time, i’m letting bobby do the talking.”
he laughed, a little more genuinely this time, and for the first time that day, some of the weight seemed to lift. as you stepped outside, you gave him a sideways look. “just remember. you owe me lunch for this.”
“fine,” he said, grinning now. “but i’m not sharing my fries.”
“deal,” you replied, grinning back.
it wasn’t much, but it was enough.

Kenneth Tynan and the Beatles
Shout out to @mmgth for noticing Beatle mentions in the letters of Kenneth Tynan - including working with John Lennon, Paul's 1960s reputation, and glimpses of the breakup. (Alas, no George or Ringo.)
Tynan was a drama critic and later worked with Laurence Olivier at Britain's National Theatre. Philip Norman calls him "the most rigorous cultural commentator of his age": he championed working class plays in the 1950s, supported progressive art (and was widely believed to be the first person to say "fuck" on British television). So he's an interesting perspective: well connected, arty, eager for cultural change, but from an older generation, and outside the immediate rock/pop world.
The first mention is 1966, when Tynan is already working at the National Theatre.
28 September 1966
Dear Mr McCartney,
Playing 'Eleanor Rigby' last night for about the 500th time, I decided to write and tell you how terribly sad I was to hear that you had decided not to do As You Like It for us. There are four or five tracks on 'Revolver' that are as memorable as any English songs of this century - and the maddening thing is that they are all in exactly the right mood for As You like It. Apart from 'E. Rigby' I am thinking particularly of 'For No One' and 'Here, There and Everywhere'. (Incidentally, 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is the best musical evocation of L.S.D. I have ever heard).
To come to the point: won't you reconsider? John Dexter [theatre director] doesn't know I'm writing this - it's pure impulse on the part of a fan. We don't need you as a gimmick because we don't need publicity: we need you simply because you are the best composer of that kind of song in England. If Purcell were alive, we would probably ask him, but it would be a close thing. Anyway, forgive me for being a pest, but do please think it over."
Paul replied that he couldn't do the music because, hilariously, "I don't really like words by Shakespeare" - he sat waiting for a "clear light" but nothing happened. He ended, "Maybe I could write the National Theatre Stomp sometime! Or the ballad of Larry O."
It's interesting that Tynan approaches Paul individually - because they had theatre connections in common? Or did Tynan assume that John wrote the words and Paul the music, so Paul's the guy to ask for settings of Shakespeare lyrics? (Though he does correctly identify Paul songs in his letter, plus the musical setting of Tomorrow Never Knows, so he might just be asking because he's a Paul girl. He also wants Paul to know that he's cool and hip and has done acid.)
Tynan definitely is a Paul girl. On 7 November that year, he pitched possible articles (I think for Playboy). He offers articles on the War Crimes Tribunal (set up by Bertrand Russell on the US in Vietnam), an interview with Marlene Dietrich, or:
"Interview with Paul McCartney - to me, by far the most interesting of the Beatles, and certainly the musical genius of the group."
It's a reminder of how drastically Paul's reputation changed, between cultural commentators of the 1960s and post-breakup.
Tynan didn't get his Paul interview, but he worked twice with John.
On 5 February 1968, he's sorting out practical details for the National Theatre's company manager about about the stage adapation of John's book In His Own Write (which had already had a preview performance in 1967). It's a very Beatle-y affair:
Victor Spinetti and John Lennon will need the services of George Martin, the Beatles A & R man to prepare a sound tape to accompany the Lennon play. Martin did this tape as a favour for the Sunday night production, but something more elaborate will be required when the show enters the rep, and I feel he should be approached on a professional basis as Sound Consultant, or some similar title. I have written to him to find out if he is ready to help and will let you know as soon as he replies.
...John Lennon says that as far as his own contract is concerned, we should deal directly with him at NEMS rather than his publisher.
So John prefers to work within the Beatle structure: George Martin, Victor Spinetti, plus NEMS, rather than pursuing closer ties with his book publisher.
On 16 April 1968, Tynan writes to John about his ideas for a wanking sketch.
Dear John L,
Welcome back. You know that idea of yours for my erotic revue - the masturbation contest? Could you possibly be bothered to jot it down on paper? I am trying to get the whole script in written form as soon as possible.
John's reply is very John:
"you know the idea, four fellows wanking - giving each other images - descriptions - it should be ad-libbed anyway - they should even really wank which would be great..."
Oh John.
Tynan still wanted to interview Paul - and was noticing changes in Beatle dynamics. On 3 September 1968, Tynan pitched another feature on Paul, this time for the New Yorker:
In addition to pieces on theatre, I'd love to try my hand at a profile (I remember long ago we vaguely discussed Paul McCartney though John Lennon is rather more accessible)...
Accessible because Tynan had already worked with him, or because John was already flexing his PR muscles? The New Yorker was interested, because Tynan follows up on 14 October 1968:
4. A few days in the life of Paul McCartney (which we agreed should come at the end of the series of articles, because of the current overexposure of the Beatles.)
Why does he see the Beatles as "overexposed" in autumn 1968, when he hadn't in 1966? Was it the Apple launch? The JohnandYoko press campaign? The cumulative impact of a lot of Beatle news?
Tynan was still trying on 17 September 1969:
...I'd like to go on to either Mr Pinter [playwright Harold Pinter] or Paul McCartney... I incline towards McCartney who has isolated himself more and more in the past from the other Beatles and indeed from the public: he seems to have reached an impasse that might be worth exploring. On the other hand Pinter is a much closer friend and would be more accessible to intimate scrutiny."
I'm fascinated by this - that Paul's isolation was visible to those outside the Beatles circle (the letter is dated three days before the meeting of 20 September 1969, where John said he wanted a divorce).
But Tynan was right about Paul being inaccessible. On 5 January 1970:
I'm saddened to have to tell you that Paul McCartney doesn't want to be written about at the moment - at least, not by me. I gather that for some time now the Beatles have been moving more and more in separate directions. Paul went to a recording session for a new single last Sunday which was apparently the first Beatles activity in which he'd engaged for nearly nine months. He doesn't know quite where his future lies, and above all he doesn't want to be under observation while he decides.
So while Paul "doesn't want to be under observation", he's surprisingly open about the breakup - less blunt than "the Beatle thing is over", which he told Life in November 1969, but still frank.
Trying to persuade Paul to open up to "intimate scrutiny" in 1969 does suggest another reason why 1970s interviewers adored John. Tynan works for an older, more established press, but he's offering the kind of profile John would make his own - discussing his inner life and personal/artistic conflicts with cultural commentator who respects him as an artist. And Paul can't run away fast enough. As a journalist, you'd absolutely go for the guy who makes himself accessible and is eager to bare his soul, over Mr Doesn't Want To Be Written About At The Moment.

Student Finds Six Roman Pots During Community Dig
A third-year archaeology student at the University of Leicester, Davidson Copeland, has unearthed six complete Roman pots. This find occurred during Copeland’s first excavation, part of a community dig at Chester House Estate near Irchester, Northamptonshire. Chester House Estate is known for containing one of Britain’s best-preserved Roman small towns.
The excavation, conducted in June 2023, revealed the pots at the bottom of a deep pit in the suburbs of the ancient Roman town of Irchester. The careful placement of these items suggests they were intentionally positioned, possibly for practical uses such as money boxes or religious offerings, as indicated by holes in some of the pots.
The collection includes beakers, a small flagon, two jars, and a second-century CE Samian ware bowl, identified by archaeological ceramic specialist Dr. Adam Sutton from Aurelius Archaeology. The Samian ware bowl, a type of red-gloss Roman pottery mass-produced from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century CE, bears a stamp marking its maker as Dexter, who was active in central France around CE 130.
Professor Sarah Scott, a lead archaeologist at the site and professor of archaeology at the University of Leicester, said: “It was an incredible experience for our student Davidson, and we are very proud of his efforts,” she said. “The successful excavation was the result of exceptional teamwork and expert guidance. This fascinating discovery has generated huge interest and excitement amongst team members and visitors alike.”
The Chester House Estate, owned by North Northamptonshire Council, is an important archaeological site. The ongoing excavations aim to reveal more about the lives of the inhabitants of this ancient Roman town by uncovering houses, workshops, and cemeteries. The collaboration between the University of Leicester and the North Northamptonshire Council through the Irchester Field School offers opportunities for people of all ages to engage in archaeological investigations.
Professor Scott added: “It is fantastic for our students and Chester House Estate volunteers to have the opportunity to work together at this nationally significant site. The pots provide a tangible link to the past but have also sparked new friendships and a sense of community in the present.”
his year’s excavation has already commenced and will continue until July 12, 2024. Visitors are encouraged to visit the site during the ongoing investigations to witness the excavations in progress and interact with the archaeology team.
The pots will be displayed at Chester House Estate’s Roman Festival, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, allowing the public to view these historical artifacts firsthand.
by Dario Radley.

Grailfinders #26: Boudica
hey, remember that time we changed our username to pivot to pathfinder builds, completely breaking everyone’s saved links in the process and letting a spambot take our old name only to actually make like 2 dozen builds before stopping for almost a year?
yeah, good times.
anyways, we’re finally doing a pathfinder build again! we’re picking up right where we left off with Boudica, britain’s queen of victory! she’s a Ranger to ride well and hunt down romans even better, and we also dabble into Cavalier to grab the other horse for her chariot and Bastion to shield her allies from harm!
check out her build breakdown below the cut, or her character sheet over here!
next up: so no head?
Ancestry & Background
Boudica is a Versatile Human, giving her a boost in Constitution and Wisdom, as well as a free general feat to start off! with Ride, you don’t need to make animal handling checks to move your horse around while you ride on it. you’re a rider, you shouldn’t be falling off your mount. you’re also a Viking Shieldbearer, so you can Shield Block as a reaction to block incoming damage. it’s also more than a bit geographically inaccurate, but that’s never stopped us before.
you’re also a Noble, which is a step down from queen but we do what we can. this gives you free training in Society, as well as Genealogy Lore, because I don’t think heraldry was a thing when you were around. you also get a boost in Charisma and Strength, plus the Courtly Graces feat, so you can use society to make an impression on nobles instead of diplomacy. you’re not gonna be using that much, but maybe you’ll meet a non-roman noble on your travels.
at level five your Cooperative Nature boosts your Aid checks. at level nine you can give Group Aid, only spending a single action to help multiple people as long as it makes sense with what you’re actually doing to help. at level 13 you can Bounce Back once a day, preventing accumulation of wounded conditions from dropping to 0 HP. finally, at level 17 your Heroic Presence inspires Zealous Conviction, making it easier to command people as long as you don’t make them act completely out of character.
Class Levels
1. again, getting everything out of the way real quick- as a Ranger you are trained in Nature, Survival, Crafting, Diplomacy, Athletics, Plains Lore(or whatever type of land your character is supposed to hail from in-game, britain’s a big place it’s got range), all weapons, Unarmored, Light, and Medium Armor, your Class DC, Will Saves, and as you improve your intelligence Medicine and Religion. you’re also an expert in Perception, Fortitude, and Reflex.
your Key Ability is Strength, so that gives another boost and informs all save DCs you have as a ranger. you also get a level 1 Ability Boost to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, and Wisdom. as a ranger, you can Hunt Prey as an action, targeting one poor sap in particular for a bonus to seek and track your prey. that alone isn’t special, but your Precision Hunter’s Edge adds an extra d8 of damage to your first hit on your prey each turn.
you also get an Animal Companion. hey, free horse! (the horse also hates romans, so it gets the benefits of your Hunter’s Prey and Hunter’s Edge too.)
technically you can use Warden Spells now, but this build doesn’t do that, so enjoy having less complications in your life.
2. you can now deliver a United Assault once per turn as an action, gaining extra damage on your attack depending on how many of your friends have ganged up on whatever you’re hitting. it’s like the whole party has bonus damage against romans now… and they’re just rolling really badly!
you’re also a Forager, because you can’t cook if you don’t have food. basically, you can always find food for yourself and up to four creatures. there’s more benefits at higher levels of survival, but FGO parties are three people at a time, so you’re fine.
finally, your Bastion Dedication sets you down the path of defense, giving you the Reactive Shield reaction. if you didn’t raise your shield before something tries to hit you, you can do so at the last second for a boost to AC.
3. you can now Pick up the Pace to hunt down the romans faster, increasing how much time your party can hustle while exploring.
your will saves and athletics checks also improve this level.
4. you can now Disrupt Prey as a reaction, so any romans trying to manipulate anything around you might get wacked on the hand and stop.
speaking of stopping, you don’t do that, because you’re an Express Rider! you can make a nature check to move 50% faster. no word on what percentage cooler this makes the horse, but I bet at least 20%.
you can also block and knock at the same time with Disarming Block! it’s exactly as the name implies- if you shield block someone, you can try to disarm them.
5. another Ability Boost, this one improving your Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, and Charisma. your Ranger Weapon Expertise makes you an expert with ranger weapons, yes, but it also gives you the critical specialization of all those weapons if you’re attacking your chosen prey! your Trackless Step makes it harder for any of those romans to find you though, as you’re always covering your tracks without slowing down.
all that, plus it’s high time you got trained in Cooking Lore. for cooking.
6. your horse is all grown up- now it’s a Mature Animal Companion. this means that now your horse can chase and attack enemies without you needing to spend an action to command it! it only gets one action per turn this way, but hay. fuck romans, all my horsies hate romans.
speaking of, you can make romans Say That Again! as a reaction if they crit fail demoralizing you or lying to you. this shoves them back and lets you roll intimidation on your initiative check!
you also have a Nimble Shield Hand, so you can interact with things while wielding a shield in one hand and a sword in the other! I’m sure you cook that way due to sprite limitations, but it’s a thing you can do now.
7. seventh level rangers get Evasion, which isn’t quite as awesome as D&D’s but it’s nice. you’re a master at reflex saves now, and all your successes are critical.
you’re also an Experienced Professional (and an expert Cook Lorist), so you gain twice as much money from failing to earn income cooking, and you prevent critical failures. you’re no beni-enma, but you’re pretty damn good at what you do.
your Vigilant Senses make you a master of perception, and your Weapon Specialization deals bonus damage based on how much you’ve trained with whatever you’re wielding.
8. you can now give a Warden’s Boon as an action, giving your hunt prey and hunter’s edge bonuses to an ally you choose for a round. your anti-roman damage buff’s party wide, but we’re still getting there!
also your Unmistakable Lore means you’ll never get a critical failure while recalling cooking knowledge. I’d advise not to cook with mushrooms before this level.
your bastion feat Reflexive Shield now adds a raised shield’s AC bonus to your reflex saves as well, and you can even shield block whatever made that save happen to boot! rangers are already great with reflex saves so this is just icing on the cake.
9. your Nature’s Edge gives you an advantage on attacking people in difficult terrain. I’d argue all of britain is difficult terrain these days, but that’s due to england being anti-human life rather than because of anything slowing you down.
you’re also an expert in your Class DC, and trained in Intimidation.
10. your next Ability Boost improves your Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, and Wisdom. you’re also a Hazard Finder now, so you get a little boost to perceiving traps and hazards, as well as to save against them. rome put you through a lot, so you had to survive all that crap too.
on a lighter note, you’re now a Seasoned chef, so you get a +1 bonus to crafting all food and drinks.
finally, you can Quick Shield Block, gaining a second reaction that can only be used for blocking with your shield. given how much your shield can block now, that’s well-appreciated.
11. as a Caravan Leader, you’re able to hustle your group for much longer than before. you’re also a Juggernaut, so all your improved fortitude saves are critical on a success, and you’re an expert with Unarmored, Light, and Medium armor.
your Wild Stride lets you move through natural difficult terrain without issue, and your Intimidation improves too. this is because the british are terrifying.
12. at level twelve you can target Double Prey- as it sounds, you can target two creatures in the same action. unfortunately, there’s more than one roman in the world. fortunately, you can do something about that. you can also Rapid Mantel, pulling yourself up a ledge as soon as you grab it.
you also get the Cavalier Dedication this level, so now you have a second horse! yeah that’s it.
13. your survival is better now, and so is your skill with all weapons. not every level’s gonna be a book report.
14. remember double prey? now instead of two prey, how about two hunters? with Shared Prey, you can pick a single target and give your hunt prey and hunter’s edge bonuses to an ally as well as yourself! with this and your ranger companion, you now have three people all dealing extra roman damage! not three separate servants, but I told you we were getting there!
you can also make a Powerful Leap for Standard Anime Jumps, jumping up five feet or across by an additional five feet.
you also have a Mounted Shield, so while on your horse your raised shield and shield blocks will protect you and your mount! horses tend to not have a ton of HP, so this helps a lot.
15. one more Ability Boost improves your Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, and Wisdom, and you gain an Intimidating Prowess that transcends language. servants are stupid strong, and if I saw a woman crush a car like a tin can it really wouldn’t matter if she spoke english or not.
you also get a bunch of small improvements- Greater Weapon Specialization adds more damage to every weapon attack, Improved Evasion makes you a reflex legend and you can’t critically fail, Incredible Senses gives you legendary perception, and you have mastered Cooking Lore!
16. your Incredible Companion now becomes nimble or savage! I don’t think there’s any romans that resist nonmagical bludgeoning damage, but it never hurts to prepare. either way, they can Gallop by using two actions, increasing their speed.
speaking of, you can now lead your horse on a Trampling Carge for three actions, moving through smaller enemies and dealing damage to each one.
again, servants are really strong, so you’re a Hefty Hauler, letting you carry more stuff before getting encumbered.
17. you’re now a Masterful Hunter, improving your class DC again and giving you a bonus with ranged weapons we don’t care about. on the plus side you get an even bigger bonus to seeking your prey, and your once-per-turn damage bonus now applies to multiple attacks!
also- better athletics. have fun.
18. with the Masterful Companion feat, your horse now gets the full multi-strike damage boost of your Masterful Hunter bonus
you can also Quick Climb, just because I thought it looked cool. we’re running out of general skills, you see.
but we still have plenty of cool archetype stuff! with Shield Salvation, you can prevent a shield from breaking when you block damage with it! this works once per day per shield, but that’s still going to save you a lot in the long run.
19. you’re an Ancestral Paragon, giving you some Haughty Obstinacy so the romans can’t push you around. you critically succeed on saves against mental effects, and if someone fails to coerce you they critically fail instead!
your armor has become a Second Skin to you, so you can rest in it. feels a bit weird to get that this late in the build, but we gave you a level 12 feat at level 18, so who are we to judge?
you also get better with Society, and you can size up Swift Prey in an instant- you get a free action each turn if hunting prey is the first thing you do.
20. last level, last Ability Boost. this last one improves you Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, and Charisma. we can also finally buff the whole party properly with Triple Threat- you can mark three romans for yourself, two romans for yourself and an ally, or one roman for the whole party of three to beat up.
you get Wall Jump because again why not, and we finish the build with a Legendary Rider, giving you another free action each turn to command your horse.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
this build really maximizes the effectiveness of the ranger’s Hunt Prey ability, sneaking in as much bonus damage as we can by sharing our precision damage with just about everyone in the party. also, by sneaking shields into a class that usually doesn’t really use them, we improve the ranger’s defense by quite a bit, improving the longevity of Boudica and her horse.
Cons:
like a lot of build so far, playing to character completely removes any kind of ranged damage from the build, and in a game like pathfinder where positioning is important, not being able to attack at range can be a big issue. also, while you have plenty of defense, you have no way to repair your shields on your own, or regain HP in battle, so you’ll still lose that war of attrition.

quidditch and class
Okay originally this was a tangent in the tags of my last post but I started thinking about it more and it got too complex haha.
While thinking about quidditch as a sport, we see many very prominent, very talented female players like Ginny, the other Gryffindor Chasers, Gwenog Jones/the Holyhead Harpies, Mullet, Moran. (Notably, Katie, Ginny, and Demelza are all explicitly better than Seamus and Dean. And Ron haha.) As as a sport it's seemingly equal between genders and therefore played in mixed-gender teams, and this is likely explained by the fact that speed is controlled by an external object, the broom. So while what we value in sport and athleticism in the real world has been heavily predicated on what we consider the biological 'advantages' of (cis) men, in Quidditch this is not so much the case.
It may be that certain positions (Beater) are generally more suited to cis men, but it may also be that women excel specifically as Chasers and Seekers, which are after all the key positions on a Quidditch team. If everyone is capable of achieving the same speed (and therefore force) on a broomstick, other factors might come into play, such as flexibility, dexterity, endurance, strategy.
However, the importance of the humble broomstick also means that the sport would be strongly influenced by class. Who can afford the best broom, basically.
It's wild that broom choice in pro quidditch isn't (as far as we know) standardised, but essentially a wealthy team/nation like I guess Ireland lol would have an advantage against a less wealthy team or nation, who couldn't supply Firebolts to all its players. In the case of Ireland I suppose the British Ministry of Magic also possibly governs them (I think? rip? ?) so Ireland would have funding from Britain, presumably.
And to be clear this happens irl too, less obviously perhaps, but wealthier nations will be able to dedicate more resources, better equipment, and better training to their athletes. This is why the US wins so many Olympic medals, not because its people are inherently better or more athletic than other countries with comparable populations, whatever American Exceptionalism would have you believe.
Harry's good without his Firebolt but also it's a little unfair haha. To be fair Ginny's just as good, maybe better than him, with whatever the Weasleys can afford for her. And it's also true that in CoS Malfoy/the Slytherins are still worse than Harry and the Gryffindors, even with better brooms, as I think Wood points out. So it could be that broom choice doesn't matter quite as much as it seems, in the sense that at least the talent of the athlete is the predominant factor in how well any given broom functions. In the flying lesson in PS we see that brooms do respond to some sort of innate talent in the user, so this would make some sense.
Still, in a situation with two equally matched players in terms of talent, the determining factor would likely be broom quality. So it is still important. I assume that JKR just didn't think about this lmao. Which whatever, maybe if HP was a series about sport, not delving into this question would matter more (and by her own admission she designed Quidditch to not make sense.) I'd have to reread Quidditch Through the Ages but it really should have been mentioned there lol. Oh well, not sure how realistic it is for 'Kennilworthy Whisp' to have a class-based analysis of his favourite sport anyway lmao.
For the purposes of worldbuilding I think it's fine for this to be the case, since the WW is not supposed to be a fair, perfect utopia, and like I said this very much happens in real life too. It's interesting to think about though.
#quidditch#anyway what are everyone's favourite teams#i'd judge you for chudley cannons#and if you like the tornadoes you better not have just jumped on the bandwagon after they started winning the league#meta#my ex used to be a pro football player and she always said that in women's football strategical play was a bit more important#obv idk if that's true its just what she said haha. contrasted with men's football where speed and force are more key#i have no idea though. i have little idea about and interest in sport in general honestly

I may have noticed your tags on the Cecil post about a radio host Dream AU and I would LOVE to hear any more thoughts you have about that. What kind of host is he? What’s his on air persona like? There’s so much possibility there…
🌒 🌓 🌔 Welcome to Dreaming 🌖 🌗 🌘
—Hello... Dreamers. The moon is high and the sleep is deep. It had been brought to my attention that many of you had reported of being unable to...sleep. It is the end of January, it is known that the sound of claws can be heard scratching as one is slipping into the Dreaming, long and sharp, keeping the sleep away in fright of what would happen if one is to let their guard down. Know that it's they wish. The Somnia Hound, it's called. Fear not, dear Dreamers. You are safe. It is merely a dream set loose, starved and searching, it'll steal your sleep, if, you let it. Close your eyes, listen to my voice, and let us meet, in a dream.
—Forgetful Lollie had called to tell us that she had forgotten, yet another, dream. Remember, without a proper Dream Catcher, all your dreams will run. The local "Wiccan", Vic, had declared he is changing his trade and now will only craft Dream Catchers. Are they good? Only you can report to us. Dear Dreamers. If you ask me? Dreams must be lured, offered ideas and praise, caught with the offer of a good story.
—On that note, the nightly weather had been chaotic, thread carefully lest you'd be swept into a nightmare.
—Sleep well dear Dreamers, dream well, let us meet, then.

Blog Update!
Okay so you may have seen the muse interest tracker post I posted. I was never going to stop rping the muses I'm the most passionate about but some of the ones I'm not so much about I shall drop right now this is just one muse but theres a few I'm gonna be testing and if I aint feeling them I shall also just not make them permanent.
In - James 'Logan' Howlett aka Wolverine - Geralt of Rivia - Garrett Hawke aka Hawke from Dragon Age 2.
Out - Darro Orniel
Testing - William 'Billy' Butcher - Hank McCoy aka Beast (FC still being thought up, open to suggestions) - John Constantine - Death - Ben Grimm aka The Thing - Cooper Howard aka The Ghoul - Thor (From God of War.. might get confusing with Marvel's Thor but we'll cross that bridge) - Brian Braddock aka Captain Britain - Garfield Logan aka Beast Boy - The Joker - Dexter Morgan - Nergal Jr
I'll probably post a starter call for the test muses or something soon. Maybe a post giving some info on some of them too.

The mischievous folk legend returns. Krampus, the mischievous companion of St. Nicholas, is the ultimate holiday enforcer. With horns, a shaggy coat, and a menacing sack, he prowls Alpine villages, dishing out coal to naughty kids—or whisking the especially bad ones away for a terrifying time-out. Think of him as Santa’s spooky sidekick, ensuring everyone’s on their best behavior!

The Sound And The Fury
Judge the Labour Government by its Enemies
Source: Money website
By Honest John
THE LABOUR government, elected less than five short months ago, often gives the impression it is under siege. Ministers and their spokespeople seem to be continually on the defensive, simultaneously accused of having a lack of ambition and being overly technocratic while at the same time being criticised for making policy and fiscal decisions that have actual consequences on society, sometimes by the same people. It is a strange world indeed when broadly sympathetic outlets such as the New Statesman, the Guardian and Novara Media unite in defence of the farming lobby against a social democratic government. It sometimes feels that for all the well-analysed desire for change on the part of the British electorate - which saw that electorate systematically dismantle the Conservatives at virtually every level of government over the last two years- when Labour actually attempt to introduce that change, liberal hands clutch pearls and the gates of the hellscape that is the right wing print and online media world are opened, and righteous fire is belched out at Keir Starmer and his beleaguered crew.
Take last month’s budget. Rachel Reeves, long accused of being a neoliberal drone (not least by me), showed remarkable dexterity in ditching aspects of her treasured fiscal rules, by borrowing over £28bn and raising tax revenues by over £40bn, all without increasing direct taxation on ordinary citizens, as Labour had promised in opposition. Was Reeves praised for this fiscal achievement? Not a bit of it. Labour were accused of everything from breaking manifesto promises to launching a new class war on the rich. The general view of the commentariat was that this was a terrible budget that would spook the bond markets, depress investment and force wealth-creators to leave the country. No matter that Reeves has almost fully met the destructive funding deficit which the NHS has endured, bequeathed the government by the Tories; it would appear to matter little that education, affordable housing (including council housing), bus transport, pensions, the minimum wage and public sector pay are all to receive increases in funding, and clearly matters not at all that, post-Budget, most voters surveyed approved of the direction of social policy and the finances found to support it. After all, what do they know?
To listen to Labour’s critics in the right wing press, GB News, and the Conservative Party, Labour have somehow broken some immutable rule that taxes must never increase for the wealthy, that public services must simply put up with continued underfunding until society can “afford” to right a decade or more of ruinous austerity, and that every privilege, loophole and perverse incentive that has allowed the rich to plunder the poor in this country in a malign process that has gone on for over forty years, must be left untouched - forever. It seems these critics do not appear to have noticed, or accepted, that there has been a change of government and that Starmer’s Labour Party represents a completely different set of values to the clapped out Thatcherism of Rishi Sunak and the whacky and destructive right wing political and economic experiments imposed on the country his hapless predecessors. Perhaps they bought into the assessment of the left that Starmer’s Labour simply represents reheated Blairism and the rich and privileged could therefore go on ripping off the British people indefinitely, with no price to pay. Instead what these critics - on left and right - have to accept, no matter how much in pains them, that Britain now has the most left wing government since 1974 and, unlike its ill-starred predecessor, it has the political space to change this country permanently for the better.
Make no mistake, there are real problems with this government. It has been characterised by chronic pre-election caution, nasty factionalism, bouts of dishonesty, bizarre episodes of ministerial entitlement, a paucity in original or curious thinking, particularly in health, clumsy and slow-on-the-uptake messaging and at times wilful stubbornness. But wherever you look, underneath the sound and the fury, there is genuine, potentially transformative, change underway - whether you are an elective patient waiting for a procedure; a gig economy worker; a public sector employee; a renter; a trade union member; someone on minimum wage; someone wanting to get on the housing ladder; a rail traveller, a teacher or a pupil - there is at last hope that things may improve and that governmental priorities are not ranged against you, or that your hopes and aspirations will be met by those in charge with simply a resigned shrug. There is so much more still to do: the Green Prosperity Plan has to be revived; wealth needs to be taxed to help fund the restitution of public services not yet in receipt of government largesse; the utilities need to be brought back into public ownership and meaningful regulation; the low wage migration-dependent economy has to be transformed and Britain’s towns and former industrial communities need to to be regenerated with the pace and imagination New Labour applied to the cities. But in five months Labour has done much to reset the UK’s direction and priorities to the benefit of the less well-off.
In addition, the government’s constitutional changes range from the symbolic removal of hereditary aristocratic privilege from the governance of the country, to the potential regeneration of local democracy through the devolution of power and resources to the English regions and their Mayoralties in a way that could shut out Toryism from effective local government for a generation. Furthermore its proposals for enhanced devolution to Scotland and Wales could finally deposit sectional nationalism into the political dustbin where it has always belonged. A combination of a better resourced activist state overseeing investment where it is needed, planning the economy and rebuilding trust in public services after the cynicism and waste of the Tory years could also, over the next four years, stymie the advance of Reform and prevent the blight of the far right spreading its influence as it has in much of Europe and in the USA.
And who is ranged against this effort to secure national renewal? The list is long and ignoble: the discredited Tory Party; the conman Nigel Farage and his latest vehicle; the disgrace that is the right wing press; the unfunny joke that is GB News; disingenuous pensioners; the CBI; the preposterous Jeremy Clarkson; the hyper-rich; the private schools; the racist far right; the absurdity that is Elon Musk (part incompetent tech bro and part incipient fascist) and last, but not least, the landowners pleading poverty that represent the pampered and uneconomic farming industry.
It is said that by their enemies shall you know them. Well, on the basis of the above collection of the malign, the corrupt and the misinformed, Labour must be doing something right.

Stade Roland Garros for Wheelchair Tennis.
When I think of the Olympics tennis is not on top of the list, then I thought that it would be a great way to go to the mythic Roland Garros courts without shelling big bucks for the French Open. I chose a date at random and got the chance to watch the Single Men Medals games.
We got to see the Bronze medal game between Spanish Martin de la Puente and Argentinian Gustavo Fernandez (Argentina won) and then the battle for the Gold medal between Alfie Hewett of Great Britain and Tokito Oda of Japan. The 18 years old Japanese won after a 3-set fierce battle. (2-6;6-4;5-7)
The dexterity of the players needing to not only play tennis but also steer their wheelchairs was so amazing to watch. The central court was struggling to stay quiet and not cheering at each exchange.
The way Alfie Hewitt is always on the move was quite interesting to see at first. Wonder if it’s distracting from the serving point of view:

🎶✨ when u get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, and publish. then, send this ask/tag 10 of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool)✨🎶
Thanks for tagging me, @natolesims 💛 How am I supposed to pick only 5?! I have about 20 songs that I listen to almost every day, repeatedly (+ other songs that get lost between them) 🙄🙈
Paradise (feat. Dermot kennedy) - MEDUZA (In my region, Paradise is still on the radio. So when Mr. Husband and I drive somewhere, and this song comes on, he always shuts up. When I asked about this, he said - you don't seem to hear me when this song plays...🙈🤣)
Woke Up in Love - Kygo, Gryffin, Calum Scott (TMI. Imagine you're in a labor ward on the busiest day, and the only thing you hear are people screaming and crying. Somehow this song silenced it all. Also, this is the first song I ever played to my nooboo, and she seems to like it more than any other song.)
Kuula, kuula - Dagö (I listen to most of Dagö's songs and have been a fan of their music for over half my life. Most of their songs have very complex lyrics, but this one is just a very beautiful and honest love song.)
The time to run (Finale) - Dexter Britain (I stumbled on this one a long time ago, I mean pre-Spotify and their curated artist radio era. It has been my phone's ringtone for the past 8 years.)
Rescue Me - James Gillespie (That sums it up well, only I have 1 song instead of a playlist 😂 ->
As always, feel free to ignore it because lately, I'm not sure who likes/wants to get tagged 🙃 @glammoose @zosa95 @idyllicephemera @oasivy @enchanting-whim @samssims @aurorangen @akitasimblr @bluehavensims @devotedsims

In Victorian Britain, spooky winter's tales were part of the Christmas season, often told after dinner, over port or coffee. They got me into martial arts, meditation, surfing, skateboarding; big time influence on who I am today. Greg Cipes Halloween is bigger than Christmas in America. I've experienced it in New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., and if you're in the right neighbourhood, every house is decorated with spooky ghosts, spider webs, and jack-o-lanterns. Rhys Darby
Halloween best quotes ever If ever there was a holiday that deserves to be commercialized, it's Halloween. We haven't taken it away from kids. We've just expanded it so that the kid in adults can enjoy it, too. Cassandra Peterson Where there is no imagination there is no horror. Arthur Conan Doyle People value Halloween, like Valentine's Day, because they can tell themselves that it's not merely secularized but actually secular, which is to say, not Christian, Jewish, Hindu or Muslim. Conan O'Brien On Halloween, kids get to assume, for one night the outward forms of their innermost dread, and they're also allowed to take candy from strangers - the scariest thing of all. Kate Christensen Charlie Brown is the one person I identify with. C.B. is such a loser. He wasn't even the star of his own Halloween special. Halloween best quotes and decorations Proof of our society's decline is that Halloween has become a broad daylight event for many. Robert KirbyWhen black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, May luck be yours on Halloween. Author Unknown When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, May luck be yours on Halloween. Author Unknown It's said that All Hallows' Eve is one of the nights when the veil between the worlds is thin - and whether you believe in such things or not, those roaming spirits probably believe in you, or at least acknowledge your existence, considering that it used to be their own. Even the air feels different on Halloween, autumn-crisp and bright. Erin Morgenstern Halloween starts earlier and earlier, just like Christmas. Robert Englund I see my face in the mirror and go, 'I'm a Halloween costume? That's what they think of me?' Drew Carey There is nothing funny about Halloween. This sarcastic festival reflects, rather, an infernal demand for revenge by children on the adult world. Jean Baudrillard In Britain, the major public holiday used to be Guy Fawkes Day... that was celebrated on November 5th with things like bonfires and fireworks... I think that made Halloween seem preferable. The idea of having pumpkins and costumes and parties seemed much more appealing than burning down your neighborhood. Lisa Morton In our town, Halloween was terrifying and thrilling, and there was a whiff of homicide. We'd travel by foot in the dark for miles, collecting candy, watching out for adults who seemed too eager to give us treats. Halloween quote by the great poet Poe For about 30 years, Halloween was taken over by pranksters. By the '30s, pranks were causing cities millions of dollars of damage. They considered banning Halloween in many cities, but instead, parents got together and came up with party ideas for kids, and a lot of them involved dressing up and costuming. Lisa Morton There haven't been organized protests, but I have heard of protests where people have wanted to celebrate Halloween. Lisa Morton You look at Cheney, Rumsfeld, Karl Rove, and Bush - if you saw them on Halloween, they wouldn't need a costume. Tommy Chong I live in New Orleans part of the year, and it's a really fun eating town. I bought two homes there, one to live in and one as an investment. Jen Lancaster I hate Halloween. I hate dressing up. I hate - I wear wigs, makeup, costumes every day. Halloween is like, my least favorite holiday. Amy Poehler My favorite scary movie was always 'Halloween.' I love that there's hidden emotion underneath Michael Myers' psychotic behavior. Plus, he has the best mask, hands-down.
