He was sure he had heard Lana’s voice.

Caleb had been in one of the farther rooms in his apartment, working on one of the many incomplete fighter jet models he had been putting on the back burner. He took a look at his chat with her, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion. They hadn’t planned to meet up today, so maybe he was just hearing things.

He continued working on his model before ultimately pausing and deciding to check if someone was actually there.

Placing his tools down and heading to the entrance of the room, he spotted her setting a plant on the coffee table. She quietly looked around his place, tidying up small things here and there. He waited until she was lost in thought before making his way over—just as she turned toward the hallway.

“Oh, hey, pip-squeak.” he greeted, making his way to the living room, it didn't escape his attention the addition she brought with her.

“Hmm..?” Peering over at the coffee table, the taller notices the plant. “Is that the plant child you mentioned?” Caleb asks, referring to their earlier conversation about ways to bring life to his lifeless apartment. He then squats down to get a closer look as he gently took one of the leaves in his hand.

Usually, he was fine with the gloomy, muted colors since he rarely stayed home for days on end. But lately, he had all the more reason to make the place a little more inviting—at least for one person. Between filling his house with apple plushies, new dressers, and other small touches, Lana’s next plan of action was to bring in some plants.

Lana shifted the weight of the small pot in her arms, the trailing vines brushing against her sleeve as she scanned her thumb over the panel. The lock clicked, the door opening with a quiet hiss.

"Caleb?" she called, stepping inside.

Maybe he wasn't here. He was probably out, or maybe just buried in whatever project had his attention today. She had invited herself over, anyway. She let the door shut behind her as she took in the space—still sparse, still carrying that feeling of temporary like he hadn’t fully decided to settle in yet.

Was it a lack of time? Or something else?

She didn’t linger on the thought, instead moving toward the coffee table and setting the pathos plant down gently. It looked right here, already adding something alive to the space.

Her fingers brushed over one of the leaves before she turned, spotting a jacket draped haphazardly over the couch. Without thinking, she grabbed it, folding it over her arm before placing it neatly back where it belonged.

Small things. Tiny shifts.

Maybe, eventually, the place would start to feel less like a space Caleb existed in and more like a home he actually lived in.

Maybe, eventually, it would start to feel like Caleb was actually home—and not just some version of himself she had a hard time recognizing. Not just a reflection of who he used to be, stretched thin over the life he was trying to rebuild and somehow keep her in.

She exhaled, stepping back from the couch. "Caleb?" She called out again, glancing toward the hallway.

I have my fair share of “designer” house plants lying around, but I have to give so much love and respect to my pothos’. My mom has grown pothos for as long as I can remember (I think she’s only ever had one pothos that she has simply propagated endless times), and it is such a classy plant. I have a couple different types of pothos, but my neighbor gave me this one before she moved, and I feel like that is almost unfair because this plant seriously is so beautiful.

Talk about an easy, forgiving plant that just keeps growing and growing. I also love the vine aesthetic...true jungle vibes.

The Evolution of Charlie.

This plant is sentimental to me for one reason: it belonged to my father, Steve. Growing up, I remember Charlie always hanging around the house. Usually on the kitchen counter where it received the brightest indirect sunlight our small mobile home could offer. Its dark green vines touching the floor after a successful growing season. When it would rain, Steve would task me with placing Charlie outside to collect Mother Nature's gift. Charlie was the only plant in the house & in some way, became a member of our tight knit family. Namely, the Devil's Ivy is difficult to kill. One could say Charlie must have felt Steve's presence dissipate from this Earth. I wonder if plants share some sort of cosmic connection to their caregivers? I'm no expert by any means. After doing some light research (thanks to YouTube) I quickly began to understand how propagation worked. I salvaged what I could from Charlie & placed it in a mason jar. I didn't have much hope, but just like my father, Charlie proved to be resilient.

Praise me! I have spent the last seven hours doing the last of the odd jobs that I had put on my "Oh no, it's covid-19-and-we-have-to-stay-home" To Do List. I scrubbed the kitchen, washed the balcony windows inside and out, changed my bedding, mopped the kitchen and the bathroom, did all my dishes and scrubbed the sink, replaced a blown out light bulb on my solar light string on my balcony, rehung the indoor lights whose command strips had let go, and because there's nobody to give #pothos clippings to recently I haven't been cutting my pothos back, so I got up on a step stool and I rearranged where all the tendrils are hanging on the wall. I just have to scrub the tub which is filled with dirt from the windows I washed, then I can get rid of this sweat! Well-earned sweat, I must say. And if I feel up to it, I might actually do some writing.
