A Devil’s Advocate

Playing a devil’s advocate in a situation like this is an eye-opener. When someone in a group is contradicting or opposing your view/s, other possibilities or other pieces of evidence become significant. The phrase, which was believed to be first used in 1771, was initially about a religious practice where a Roman Catholic official whose duty is to examine critically the evidence on which a demand for beatification or canonization rests. Over time the meaning changed to a person who champions the less accepted cause for the sake of argument (Merriam-Webster n.d.). With this, an individual or a group can challenge ideas or points of information. In the movie, Juror # 8, portrayed by Henry Fonda (who also was the producer of the movie), was a perfect representation of the said act. From the beginning of the deliberation until the end, he was the one questioning information to further the understanding of the case. He presented his arguments by playing as the devil’s advocate and eventually convinced the rest of the group to agree - something that we usually do in group communication - even Juror # 3 portrayed by Lee. J. Cobb was a firm Guilty believer from start till the finish.

while the events of the devil'sadvocate did happen - the second time around didn’t go as expected. he still won the  case  (he didn’t quit before questioning the witness) and he moved to new york. during that time, he spoke to his father (the devil / john milton), and they came to an agreement; he’d do what he could and when  he was ready (before the new millennium) he’d do as instructed. while this agreement was kept, eventually mary ann (his wife that died due to suicide via a demon the first time around) died due to 9/11. of course, kevin doesn’t know this - he just assumes she left him due his work load or due to a demon. 

now, in current times; kevin still works for the legal firm - he’s a  heavy  hitter. he takes  the worst of the worst cases  and wins. he always wins - he hasn’t lost a case to date.
