I would like to see Capcom delve more into these kinds of aspects of world building: it would be really interesting to know how demons outside the underworld feel, both physically and mentally. It would give more depth and facets to the characters, because one of my headcanon about Sparda is that, even if he was 1000% sure about his decision and love for humans and his family, he still felt some internal turmoil. Because, even though he chose to be on humanity side, his nature was still one of a full blooded demon. And damn, it would give Trish a hella (pun intended) more personality: she would be her own character, not just some copy of the protagonists’ mother; she would have her own struggles, her own problems, her own internal debates.

i'm in the middle of doing something else right now + i don't normally make posts like this so this is going to be pretty poorly put together, but..
re:dmc1 novel, is gilver actually supposed to be vergil? i personally always assumed he was (+ and was therefore responsible for the resulting massacres etc.) until i last reread a few days ago:
for those unaware: the DMC1 novel mainly features demons that inhibit the corpses of dead humans. there are some instances of demons that don't possess any corpses which are described as "scythe-swinging shadows", but the main focus are the possessed corpses.
“Humanity was born a race of our slaves.” Gilver pressed harder on his weapon, and a thin stream of red blood rolled down Grue's neck. “Inhabiting the corpses taxes our strength and limits our numbers. But soon we will be able to migrate to this plane in our own prepared bodies.” (pg. 120)
The bandaged man [Gilver] radiated an aura of decay. (pg. 149)
however, dante does mention that gilver "doesn't smell like" the other demons. i left in the rest of the lines in mainly because i found gilver's characterization and dialogue here interesting:
“What are you, man? You don't smell like those other things.” “You don't need to know. In any case, I'm going to crush you.” Dante shrugged. “That's a fitting line for a villain.” “Your absurd labels are meaningless.” Gilver cackled behind his bandages. “The victor will be called the hero by future generations. Arguing about good and evil is pointless.” (pg. 172)
addt. gilver repeatedly separates himself from not only humans, but also dante:
“Do you have any questions, Dante? You have treacherous blood in you.” (pg. 172)
[...] Gilver finally pronounced. “You have our blood coursing through your veins. You're the mongrel half-breed offspring of a human and a demon. And you betrayed our side.” (pg. 173)
“This is your world,” he finally said. “Yes. The demon world is replacing yours. It will spread out from this nexus until finally everything is consumed.” Gilver hefted his sword, seemingly recovered from Dante's last attack. “This place is a cancerous blight to incomplete souls like you. [...] (pg. 180-181)
..... which is interesting, because throughout all of the novel dante has had trouble existing for any amount of time in the demon realm. whatever amount of devil blood in him doesn't help him and he struggles to stay awake and fight, even at the barrier between the two worlds. that said, gilver very obviously has access to some amount of demon power, mainly as shown through their battle in which he dons his.. demon armour lol
there are multiple other things that i didn't feel like touching upon right now, and the biggest issue is that... this is goikeda and kamiya's vision, not itsuno's. so it's possible that this IS actually vergil as the two wanted to write him, but considering this takes place just before DMC1.. it really could be possible that vergil's just been something considered dead, right?
... or maybe it is vergil and he just has blood on his hands and wanted dante to suffer, like i initially assumed. if anyone has any opinions or disagrees with me, please feel free to say as much :P i'd really like to analyze this book more and try to relate it to other DMC lore but it really is pretty difficult with how much has been retconned throughout the franchise. thanks for reading!
#devil may cry#dmc#vergil#vergil sparda#vergil dmc#dmc vergil#devil may cry novel#dmc novel#mine#text#i'll reread again soon honestly and give everything a much more analytical eye#sorry that this is really sloppily written x_x#also loling at the possessed corpses now that i've finally played resident evil#there's another interesting line which was clearly retconned re: dante and ... force edge? rebellion??#..... it's probably something like rebellion i'm assuming since it's awakened form is described as ''double-edged'' which the sparda is not#but anyway i'll post the line later just because i found it interesting#i wish. i wish. i wish. i wish we had more details about vergil. i really really do. i would very much like to know more about him-#and what kind of life he lived#ok byebye

One thing I like about DMC is the parallels they sneak in where at first you may not think it is...but the more you think about it...
Like the scene in 3 with Arkham is essentially Vergil's first big footsteps into hunting for his father's power years later after the tragedy he endured. He's looking for a way to grab that power, and here comes Arkham to begin to properly set him on the path that builds up the domino effect that THEN sets up the rest of the suffering he has to endure. From his clash with his twin, to his defeat, then his attempted clash with Mundus that leads into his enslavement and weakening that sets the stage for DMC5 with the birth of V and Urizen.
Then, in Visions of V, the climax has it where V embraces Urizen and encounters essentially the form of his fears and weakness as his younger self. Of course, V is met with immediate act of aggression through instinct of self defense by his younger manifestation but he still is prompted to not show his special book to return to him, but also remind him that 'Power alone is not enough'.
That line alone has me thinking like....wow. A complete opposite to the context of the moment with Arkham, where there's the talk about power and the desire for it. The fact that its basically himself on the other side of his own sword in VoV telling him that is, to me, such an interesting display of character growth. I don't know if that moment in VoV was meant to reference the Arkham convo in 3, but I like to believe it was. Its so alike, that it'd be weird if it wasn't to me.
Here's another cheeky one I like too, by the way.
The very night that Vergil reclaims Yamato and heads home to split himself into V and Urizen has a full moon. JUST like the very night when Vergil first defeated Dante that would eventually lead into the escalation of 3's plot and even having an ironic callback in 5 that would lead into Dante unlocking his Sin Devil Trigger.
One's a moment of victory over his twin brother, asserting his power. The other? A moment of reflection of losses that haunt him to this day, reminding him of the weakness he's desperately trying to chase away. The said desperation that peaks his desire for power and pushes him to believe abandoning his humanity is a benefit.
Of course, these thoughts still haunts him even as V (and especially Urizen, but I've mentioned that before) to the point where he reflects over it a few times. I often talk about these moment in VoV, but its just...man. One of the best things we got for DMC. A good addition for Vergil's character and essentially the icing ontop of the cake for 5 alongside the Before the Nightmare novel. There's several things it calls back to for Vergil's journey subtle or not. I hope we get more content like it in the future (maybe even have VoV localized officially), alongside games of course.
#devil may cry#dmc#leo's dmc analysis#I feel like I'm a nerd that should be shoved in the locker for how much I talk about VoV#tbf I would deserve it but it'd also be worth it#Graaaah I love Vergil as a character and the subtle refs they sneak in generally!!!#I'll prob talk more about the 3 manga and 1 prequel novel when the netflix series comes out#so bare with me abit longer-#meanwhile I'll have other small stuff between random yaps lmao

Reading through Deadly Fortune, I think it's sweet how Dante inspired so much confidence in Nero during their first meeting, even if it was only in the way of "well I fought against a stronger guy, so these other guys are chumps!" Didn't even have to try and he was already helping his nephew out just by fighting him.
(From the Nero vs. Berial fight. Alt text under the cut.)
[id: a screenshot of the English Translation of the Deadly Fortune novel. The text reads as follows:
The demon’s voice rumbled in his chest, and he waved his sword high over his head:
“Silence!” He shouted as his sword descended on me. If I hadn’t met the man in red, I might’ve been a little scared. Could I really win against an enemy so massive? Against a sword that big?
But I’d already faced off against that man. After only a few rounds fighting him, I knew a demon like this one wouldn’t pose a real threat. His sword work wasn’t even half as fast or deadly as that man’s.]

you know the contrast between how Vergil is presented vs thinking too hard about Vergil’s story is pretty funny. Man’s reputation is this iconic badass, the pinnacle of what video game rivalries can be, the coolest guy to play as, the guy who breaks every game he’s added to,
and then you go to the story and like. man’s lost his free will and autonomy at 19 and then came back a fractured man half of which was a lovecraftian eye beast the other half of which was a chronically ill goth man. and then he reunites and hes in like his 40s now I believe but legit the last time he was actually in a game where he wasn’t being mind controlled when he was 19 which is both sad but also thinking about how this guy who’s considered one of the top badasses of gaming has never really lived life outside of being a teenager.
Anyways this is the secret comedic potential of post DMC5 for Vergil because not only has the human world probably changed a fair bit in terms of technology, if he’s sticking around Dante he’s gonna actually have to learn in depth how taxes and grocery shopping work. Amazing.
#thinking about dmc seriously for the first time in a while...I never stopped the occasional canary reblog but hmmmmmmm#like I imagine post 3 Vergil was probably similarly doing mercenary/demon killing work to get money like Dante was and thats sorta shown in#the novels. but like before that when he was a young young kid just post attack he was probably just living feral in an alleyway or smth#with just the yamato prolly similar to how v at the start of visions of v was. that child mugged and dumpster dived ok#point is while obviously he got to a place where he wasnt like. broke and homeless by the gilver era hes probably not had to think much#about money besides it buys me food and clothes mans was confused by one goaland power and yada yada while guess what buddy now you're#gonna be consumed by adulting. I dont even think he'd be that bothered by Dante not paying the bills at first but once he settles into human#living and gets a firsthand experience of what a cold shower when the heating is off feels like he is ON his ass about it#he pretends hes sooooo above human concerns until he has to live them lol and nowhes in charge of devil may crys finances prolly#nero taught him how to do taxes I bet#devil may cry#vergil sparda#vergil

I know Vergil's situation is accidentally hilarious but I would like to take a moment to appreciate the comedy that is DMC4 for Nero
Nero was basically an atheist to the whole Savior thing, he didn't believe in it at all even though Kyrie's family was extremely devoted to it to the point that the reason her parents showed interest in Nero was because he had the hair color that Sparda allegedly had and he did not sit through a single sermon. Literally, that scene at the beginning of DMC4 is the only time he's been to this ceremony for the Knights and that was for Kyrie.
And then by the end of the game, Sparda is not only someone who actually existed and the whole myth was true but Kyrie's parents were spot on about him being a direct descendant of Sparda. He'd later find out that he's not just a descendant but HIS GRANDSON.
#the DMC4 novel has Nero initially constantly saying how the whole Sparda thing is absolute BS and it's so funny#like we know you're literally his grandson#dmc4#dmc nero#dmc#devil may cry

I made a Devil May Cry dating sim. (Art not mine)
I found cute art by Cyan(?) of DMC3 Dante with a bunch of different expressions, and google translate revealing that it was free to use... I took the opportunity. This was a passion project made early 2024 and also took me a while to learn Renpy.
It's incomplete and only one "Mission". I give you permission to shoot me with a giant laser if I badly characterize Dante, Vergil, or Lady (or y'know, just a comment suggestion!) Also tell me if there's like any weird inconsistencies or typos.
This is based around some alternate universe where Vergil never fell into hell in DMC3 and like a few more changes you'll notice that differs from canon.
It's on restricted mode for now, may make it public if I'm confident I won't be put on a cringe compilation /j
This can be played on either browser or Windows download! The browser is more laggy while the Windows is a better experience but I’m not sure if it will run correctly.
Password is just: "password"
Credits to Cyan for the character art
Music by Rungran, Rin Oikawa, and from the Devil May Cry anime 2007
Backgrounds were found on the Devil May Cry Fandom wiki as well as one from a video by @devilmaycamera (my computer isn't strong enough to take pictures of that kind of stuff)
UI and Text boxes from a Devil May Cry 3 HD texture mod by pepodmc (not the intended use but thank you)
Shout out to u/TheOneWhoPlaysYou on reddit for making this really helpful post about the fonts in the games.

the other line i found interesting that has since been retconned in DMC5:
Eva had given her life protecting him. The past and present blended into a seamless vision, and Tony was unable to distinguish between them. He heard a familiar voice whisper over the crackling flames. Hide that name. Blind yourself to it and runaway. After his mother's death, Tony had become obsessed with an old sword left behind by his father. His younger self had deliriously clutched the weapon out of fear and loneliness. And eventually the sword had spoken to him. “And so I hid my name and lived as Tony Redgrave up until now,” Tony said aloud. “I deceived them, so that I could gain the power to fight them as equals.” Had the sword really talked to him? Was it a supernatural ploy by the servants of the demon king? Had they toyed with him as a child, until he was ready to play their games? (pg. 161)
as we know in DMC5, eva was supposed the one who told dante to run and change his name... or, if you don't want to consider it a retcon, it's also very possible that the trauma from his mother's death messed with him and/or his memory
by the way, this sword didn't seem to be named. it's not force edge, but it could have been an early form of rebellion:
He pulled the massive sword from its scabbard on his back. Something in the darkness made the weapon look even larger than it was. The skull design on its hilt seemed to gloat ominously. “This sword was caged, along with my real name.” Dante thought back to his father's weapon, calling out to him as a child. The pieces snapped into place. “But now he'll be released.” The sword bellowed and groaned, enlarging until it was half the size of Dante himself. The double-edged blade looked capable of cleaving a cow in two, but weighed next to nothing. (pg. 166)

Here are things I've noticed in the DMC Netflix series trailer!
During the motorbike scene, he's fighting red and blue demons. 90% sure that's Agni and Rudra.
The man in the background looks like it may be Enzo, Dante's old business partner before Morrison.
Red/Blue eyes.....signs point to VERY likely this being Arkham. Probably mid transformation into Jester after sacrificing Lady's mother.
Echinda, the boss from DMC4??? Interesting choice
We knew he loses his shirt eventually, but here it is in more full animation
THE WHITE RABBIT FROM THE DMC3 MANGA, HUH? HMMMM....
#devil may cry#dmc netflix#there's also other things like I THINK the guys attacking dante from the 1 novel but idk#here's a few tho!#leo's dmc analysis
