... is an upcoming Choicescript interactive fiction game! You can follow development updates on the dev blog here, view the forum page here, and play the demo here.
Villain Intern is currently on Chapter One: Onboarding as of 9/8/24, sitting at just over 30,000 words.
[FAQ Here and character introductions here, for the newer villains!]
Play as an aspiring supervillain interning at UnderHand, a legacy criminal corporation. Start from the bottom and navigate a world where everyone has it out for you, leveraging your strange superhuman abilities and your knack for manipulation. Make a name for yourself as an executive villain (with your own swanky corner office!), or turn against your higher-ups and usurp the company,…or throw away your promising career for the greater good, I guess...
Powers and Customization:
Choose from two different ability trees. Play as either a homemade cyborg with (painful looking) mechanical augmentations of your own design, or a genetically mutated freak with mysterious, bizarre abilities derived from animal genes. Choose 3 of the 9 unique abilities available for each power type, which update (or mutate) to scale as you get stronger. Climb walls, perfectly mimic any voice, rotate your head 360 degrees, talk to the AI assistant in your brain, etc etc! As a rule, you start out villainous, but whether you’re charming or sinister, sniveling or demanding, and backstabbing or frontstabbing is up to you.
______________________________________________________________
Key Characters and Relationships
Relationship progression tracks two major stats- your connection with a character, and your rivalry, which are not mutually exclusive. So you can romance your greatest nemesis, backstab your closest friend, that kind of thing. Or both at once, with the same person, even..
Fellow Interns:
👾 Peter Hyde is your cubicle neighbor, a geeky slackoff who’s fond of novelty ties. Unlike you, Peter doesn’t really want to be here, but he seems for some reason unable to quit. Laid-back, conflict avoidant, and generally easy to manipulate, he’s easy minion material for the MC- but his attitude belies a volatile, monstrous secret. Which can be a great asset or a major risk, depending on if you can maintain your control over him.
🤖 T9-670 is a seven-foot tall ex-war machine. Once a military member conscripted to UnderHand’s private security decal, its contract didn’t end when it died- the soldier’s brain was transplanted into a humanoid steel frame with a dark glass plate for a face. T9 is doing some soul searching- it’s not totally sure if it even has one left, but it would like to have a purpose beyond fixing printers and mowing down UnderHand’s enemies with its plasma gun.
🔬 Dr. Dr. Elaine Foster is an up-and-coming mad scientist, assistant to the esteemed Dr. Shrink. Don’t bring up the fact that she has two doctorates and is still an intern. She’s a genius prodigy, but otherwise has no superhuman abilities, which causes her to be overlooked by your superiors. Passionate and inscrutable, she’s obsessed with making it to the top her own way, and will remain one step ahead of you if you aren’t careful.
🧪 Reid/Reney Sullivan (gender selectable, nb included) is your nemesis, or at least they think so. They’re employed by OverSight, the subsidized hero-corporation that works in tandem with the government. An interning hero with impressive telekinetic powers, they are nonetheless as much of an amateur as you, and so you find yourself on even footing with one of the most promising superheroes in the business. Earnest and witty, they genuinely just want to help people. Eventually, they become fixated on “figuring you out”, which can lead to them getting sucked into your schemes. That, or their meddling could be your downfall. Worst of all, they might even succeed in reforming you.
There’s also 👁️ Blink, a rogue superhuman- some say vigilante, others say independent villain. Completely anonymous, they wear a unique suit of tactical gear that allows them to turn completely invisible, the first of its kind. Quippy, chipper, and sauntering, they tend to use their powers for ridiculous, showy things like popping up behind newscasters on TV. An invisible superhuman that loves the spotlight, Blink is full of contradictions. And secrets, big ones, that pertain to you.
… plus a cast of older, more established villains and heroes- including The Man, UnderHand’s enigmatic CEO. A faceless, hollow man in an empty suit. Actually, nobody’s ever seen anything but the suit, so he might just be the suit.

So this may not be news to others, but this is the first I've come across it! According to Leonesaurus, who uploaded this capture:
Urianger was being roleplayed by a Square-Enix dev and interacting with players for his first appearance in-game before they implemented him into the story as an actual character. This took place at Camp Horizon on the old Selbina/Ridill server in 2011. Urianger would give players who visited him a 10 min buff for Quickened, Regen, HP and MP increase! Arcanist powers galore! Speaking of Arcanist, you can see on his back the original Arcanist weapon that was intended by the old FF XIV 1.0 team before Yoshida took over and retconned them into wielding books instead from ARR onward.
And here's the key dialogue:
Outside the Adventurer's Guild in Ul'dah:
Alfgar: Hearken adventurers of Eorzea! Ware you the venomous words of false prophets! Alfgar: Adventurer! I ask that you heed not the foul lies of those claiming knowledge of future happenings! Player Character: Who are these false prophets? Alfgar: They appear near aetheryte camps, bedraped in shadowy robes, preaching their untruths to any and all who will listen. Keep your distance, traveler, lest you become tangled in their web of deceit. PC: Are we in any danger? Alfgar: We are all in danger, for fear can drive a man to terrible deeds, and it is seeds of fear that these farls prophets wish to plant in our hearts and our minds. They are not the Archons of legend. They are not our saviors. They only foster unrest.
At Camp Horizon:
Urianger Augurelt: A shadow hangeth o'er the realm, growing blacker with each passing day!
Urianger Augurelt: Darkness descendeth, but surrender not to despair! For the future is forged in the flames of the present!
Urianger Augurelt: I am a mere messenger, entrusted with words of prophecy.
Urianger Augurelt: Awoken but recently to the truth, I come to stir those yet aslumber.
Urianger Augurelt: Ne'er till land consumes sun can sea bear moons. Heavens spew crimson fire, hells seep black dooms.
Urianger Augurelt: The senary sun yields the septenary moon - expelling the Astral, beckoning the Umbral. So saith the eternal wisdom of Mezaya Thousand Eyes.
Urianger Augurelt: Open thine eyes, ye seekers of truth! Stand and bear witness to the path that must be trod!
Urianger Augurelt: Awoken but recently to the truth, I come to stir those yet aslumber.
Urianger Augurelt: To spread word of the coming darkness and stoke the flames in your hearts, that they may light the way.

(Not sure if this is a sfw question 😅) but do Perry and Iris ever have any kids or adopt any in the future?
Tysm for adhering to the rules page mwah mwah 😙💕, this IS sfw but this was def the right blog for it lol (questions about the future directed AT the ask blog boyos will probably just confuse them and make Dev’s head hurt wheeze)
ALSO thank u for finally giving me an excuse to finish this wip I’ve had sitting around forever wheeze, the answer to wether or not Perry and Iris ever have kids is a RESOUNDING YES- eight of them, to be exact! (And that’s NOT counting the ones they fostered!!! If you ask IRIS how many kids they have he’ll say ‘DOZENS’, and he has the majority of them in a group chat ;w; 💕)
These fam-babies are all human versions of designs belonging to beloved mutuals!! 💕
(please comment to claim your babies djdndndjdjdjdjd I don’t know all y’all tumblrs 😭)
Also More rambling and doodle comics under the cut bc I need to put all the Dad content in one place wheeze
Perriris’ co-parenting journey started after one of Perry’s students had to be rescued from a terrible home situation, but was having so much trouble in the foster care system that Iris (who had been wanting a baby for DECADES anyway) BEGGED his husband to just adopt her themselves, and it went shockingly well!!
However, once thier daughter started asking about a baby sibling, Iris suggested that he and Perry try for a biological child again, despite having never succeeded in the past. Perry’s retirement from his teaching job was fast approaching anyway, but as much as he loved the idea, he knew that is was possible his body just couldn’t do it…
So he does what His older brother Timmy did, back when he was only ten, and wishes on a star.
This wish leads to the birth of WESLEY AND ANNIE, thier biological twin babies! Fun fact about them: because PERRY is a wish-baby (wished for by human Timmy, granted by fairy Timmy) that makes the twins DOUBLE wish babies! (Wished for by Perry, granted by Dev 🥺) so the two of them have a ton of residual magic in thier systems, much like thier daddy! I imagine when they were newborns is when it was the strongest, and Wren would always be the ONLY one to see them do anything unnatural, so she’d constantly be Candace-Flynn-style trying to convince her parents the babies were magic lmfao
Once they start fostering more regularly, Perry and Iris Fairly quickly develop a reputation for being excellent foster parents, especially when it comes to children other fosters have deemed “difficult”- any child that is enough of a little shit to remind Iris of himself as a child gets IMMEDIATELY scooped up be he and his husband, and several of them have never left 💕🥰
MIDDLE PIC DRAWN BY @zennyzach / @perisprinkles - THANK U AGAIN SOBS I STILL SCREAM CRY AND THROW UP ERERY TIME I SEE IT // V POS 😭🥺💕💙💜
They also designed Annie, and Wesley was designed by @phobylee / @theharbingerofdoomtime ! 💙💜
(This second comic is no longer canon bc this was before I decided Wes and Annie were bio children but I included it bc it’s still cute ;w;)

Hey gamers/modders, I been thinking about something and wondered what people's opinions are.
As someone who qualifies as 'old' by internet standards (over 30) and recently just read this article about Square Enix having to implement a 'customer harassment policy' - and I mean harassment from players/customers towards Squex staff, it got me thinking.
I have been gaming a while. A long while. And I really feel like about a decade ago, this shit would be considered 'rare' enough that it was uncommon. Now gamedev and even modders are facing harassment from players on a daily basis to the point policies like THIS are having to become a thing, like ....? Like I can point to SEVERAL cases of this in recent years, like how a lot of the BG3 devs and even VA's have been treated and harassed by fans with the expectation of somehow 'continuing' a closed-story-rpg-game indefinitely. The Sims 4 modding community is riddled with drama that I have not seen in any other modding space - at least to that level. Like I know incidents of prominent modders being fucking doxxed because they weren't IMMEDIATELY available to patch for a Sims 4 update (and the Sims 4 is honestly kind of notorious for frequent updating).
Like not to be a 'kids these days' person, but idk, there's only one group entering the wider gaming scene over those 10 years and that's Gen Z. I mean yeah, there's a decent argument towards the growing dominance of web 2.0 (basically your social media sites) that could have fostered an environment for 'anonymous harassment' but I find that hard to believe.
Growing up with games and discovering mods for the first time, I definitely learned to appreciate the hard work modders put in, out of their own time, to make a mod and share it with people for free! We also had to live through a lot of game releases where 'day one patch' was NEVER a thing, and gamedev delays were acceptable because of this - you wanted that game to work on release because you weren't going to GET a patch in most cases. Internet couldn't handle it. Now instead, we have games releasing in early, busted states with a day one patch because you've got some people sending death threats to developers if they mention another delay (Cyberpunk 2077 is a good case for this one).
I dunno. Is it just because I'm old and my priorities are different? I don't have the energy to burn on harassing devs? Because I grew up with games in a different manner than the current gen in gaming?
Thoughts?
#kerytalk#this is not a gen Z callout post either#I know some lovely gen Z peeps#I am just really kind of stunned#like ... what is going on

With the exception of Arknights what are your thoughts on gacha games?
I don't feel like I need to exclude Arknights from the statement, I can criticize things even if I like them.
In general, I don't like that their widely accepted and even defended business model is "Capitalize on FOMO, exploit gambling addictions, create dependent users". I also think that the use of the "game as a service" model, and one that needs to keep pumping content forever and can't risk to alienate the player, severely limits what can be done with the medium in terms of creativity, because you can't kill off playable characters nilly willy (I actually think Epic Seven was cooking with this, Epic Seven will kill off playable characters and remove them from the plot if it feels like it, or at least used to back when I played, don't know nowadays), relationships and dynamics with characters tend to be limited because otherwise your audience can feel like you are cucking them, and I wish I was kidding but just look at the absolute dumpster fire of a drama going on as we speak (22nd of January, 2024) in Girls' Frontline 2 over in China over one of the characters having interactions with a male NPC, and you can't ever bring a true sense of finality to any given arc because everything ends up having to be foreshadowing, set-up, build-up and so on and on and on. In many cases, you also have a mold cast of Must Have tropes in your playable cast: The Maid, The Idol, The One That Worships The Ground You Walk On, The Underage And Underclothed One, The Underage (But We Treat This One As A Precious Child!) One, Foxgirl, The Cold And Highly Analytical One (But Actually, Loves You), Chuuni, etc, so it feels like in every game I kinda already know at least a third of the cast minimum already and I'm kind of primed to not really want to know them, even though there's subversions I end up liking sometimes (Fenny from Snowbreak is an example of an Idol-type I ended up loving despite not liking Idol-types).
On the other hand, even with these negatives in mind, having a game that periodically updates and adds content, and that you can discreetly play pretty much everywhere on the go due to smartphones being their main 'console', games that foster community and something to talk about with your friends that also play and that will always have something new every couple of weeks, as well as inspire fanart, fanworks, analysis, and commentary, and that tend to be more risque and interesting with their designs is honestly good to have. I personally enjoy the community aspect of gacha games, I consider it one of the two most important aspects for me, because I know I can come here, for example, and see people talking about the story, the characters, the music, the gameplay, and more, every day, and the other important thing to me is how discreet they are, since I can just play a few maps or stages in my phone real fast midst a social situation at work, and then hop back in with a renewed social battery or when a topic I like comes up.
I fully get when people showcase their disdain for gacha, yeah, but if we really want to be nitpicky, the majority of the game industry is kind of a cesspool of toxicity, which is not to say "stop bashing gacha" and instead say "bash the whole thing if you're going to be bashing it anyway" (and we should! Game devs and other personnel in the industry have been crying for better conditions for years now!). Either way, if someone decides to sit at the gambling den, it becomes their responsibility. I want there to be more safeguards for people with actual addictions and to protect them, but with this in mind, if anyone still decides to sit at the den, it's assumed they are going to take responsibility for their actions and financial decisions.
So all in all, yeah, predatory games that suffer in quality due to their own trappings, but also good sources of community, inspiration, and effective at being discreet games you can play anywhere and that get periodic updates (this isn't necessarily exclusive to gacha but it is an aspect of them that bears mentioning, which I point out since no doubt people will want to point out there's good non-gacha smartphone game options out there)

Seeing your negative reaction to Void Stranger is really interesting, because System Erasure's previous game, ZeroRanger, was also largely disliked by more hardcore shoot-em-up enjoyers. Feels kind of like the devs are less interested in making games for the core genre audiences, and more for people who like the idea of those genres. People like me for instance lmao, I really loved these two games.
I don't have the puzzle game autism myself, but I enjoyed taking Void Stranger as a whole, if that makes sense? Not as a "puzzle game", but as a strange little space that I could roll around with my hands, and particularly secret hunting with some friends and collaborating on clues and ideas we each had. I enjoyed that it fostered that kind of social play, much like Tunic before.
Interesting. The only other datum I have about ZeroRanger contradicts this, someone told me that It was far more faithful of a pastiche than Void Stranger was, which got me very curious. I wonder if I'd like it, knowing nothing of the legacy of shmups.
I also haven't quite delved into the critical atmosphere surrounding either game, it's true that a lot of the steam reviews for Void are just like "yeah i was kinda apprehensive about trying a sokoban game but someone told me it was like outer wilds and damn yeah this is peak" but it definitely seemed to strike a chord with puzzle game likers too. To me, Void Stranger repeatedly seemed to tense up around the concept of block pushing puzzling, a majority of the rooms felt like empty windows to unparseable deeper layers of secrets or were otherwise just kind of easy, and made so much easier by certain secrets you discover later. It seemed hesitant to deliver any problem that existed as moves in its world rather than poems in your head.
I'm sure newgame+ is good, like it has to be, they have a really appealing system. Every other sokoban game that adds horrible fiddliness to the prospect of turning your character and moving in a direction has been some of my favorites in the genre, notably sausage roll & can of wormholes. I love how it makes Void Stranger's tiny little rooms feel like treacherous labyrinths. I'm thinking of just playing that, ignoring the secrets and just trying to get through it with no burdens to see if I can find the fun.

✦ Lost in Limbo Devlog #9 | 02.29.24
What is this?! Two devlogs in one month?! More likely than you think! This February has been very productive for me and the team, so let's dive right into it!
Ooooh boy, Raquel keeps knocking it out of the park! She managed to get done every expression for every LI, and I coded them all! Now we have our wonderful characters ready for their debut. We have been using the wonderful Image Tools for Ren'py made by the talented and hard-working Feniks, whose tutorials and resources save a lot of dev's lives every day! This tool has made everything a bit easier for newbies like me, hehe.
Here's a taste of our edgelord's expressions! 💜 They're kind of a cutie when they put some effort into it!
We also had our second valentine's day celebration art piece thanks to Kayden! Sadly with the reworked version of the demo, you won't meet Vycar yet, so we thought we could ask for his forgiveness by giving him a beautiful bouquet and reminding him how much of a sweetheart he is! 💜
Also, Raeya got a hair update!
So, we weren't completely satisfied with the way we portrayed Raeya's hair, so this has been a rework we were sure we wanted to make. At first we were just going to render it again, but we ended up working on it from scratch to better represent what we envisioned for her. We hope you like it as much as we do! ; v ;💜
As always, we are open to any critique or advice; we are white people who have the luck to be able to ask POC friends for their advice as we work, but the more the merrier! Don't hesitate to send us your opinion to our ask box or even our email, [email protected]!
When it comes to the background department, we have been making great progress thanks to Airyn, who is honestly leaving us with our mouths hanging open every time! Thanks to her, another background has been finished and another one is in the making, leaving only two backgrounds to be revised and approved!
I personally can't stop looking at this WIP! She understood perfectly what we wanted to portray just by looking at an old WIP we had, and this is what we have so far—and it's already amazing!
Allie has been OBLITERATING the script. As of today, I think we have almost gone through everything that needed to be corrected and discussing, and lord if the script doesn't look a 100% better after we put it in Allie's hands. The way she writes, the way she understands everything I want to say even when sometimes I don't even know myself—what a talented, inspiring and amazing writer they are. I know I may sound annoying at this point singing her praises endlessly, but if the script is in the state where it is now, it's thanks to her!
My programming adventure of the month has been a success, if I say so myself! I've coded the characters with aaaaall their layers, their expressions, the blinking animations, made some videos, and started coding the script. Step by step as they say; I've coded 18 pages, and there's, uh...142 more to go. Haha! *sobs*
BUT WE ARE GETTING THERE! We can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I can finally click 'new game' and read the script and see the stuff going on! YAY!
Some extras of the month—we are preparing a Casting Call to choose the voice acting talent that will hopefully give voice to our characters. The demo won't be fully voiced (it's impossible with the funds we have, which are...zero), but if we are lucky we'll use some of our personal savings to pay for at least a few lines for each character so you can get an idea of how they'll sound if we get funded! Raquel is preparing an art piece for the announcement, and I'm getting the document ready and asking fellow VA friends for advice :3.
Also, we have a new member here at Ravenstar Games! Some weeks ago Astro and I formally adopted our first kitty, 8 month old Riki, fulfilling one of our dreams. We got him from a feline association that works with volunteers and fosters cats who have been abandoned, cats they find on the street, and so on. Riki has been living with me since January, and he's a happy, long big boy who loves playing, cuddles, and sitting on my desk while I try to work!
Say hi to the Ravenstar family, Riki! 💜
A productive month full of accomplished milestones, excitement and new challenges! The team has worked so hard, and I've done my part too! We still don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but we have done a lot of stuff we were sure we wouldn't finish yet, and look at that! We are doing so well!
As you can probably tell, my batteries are starting to run low, so I'm going to leave this devlog here. Thank you all like always for cheering us on, for being here in this journey with us, and for all the love you send our way. Let's hope March is as amazing as February has been, for us and for all of you! 💜
