Detroit REPRESENT! Youth are Campaigning for Racial Justice and LGBTQ Youth Liberation

Detroit REPRESENT! is a collective of LGBTQ youth of color, and the LGBTQ adults of color who support them. Although we’ve been around since 2011, this year was our biggest yet. Growing from five to fifteen core members, we recruited youth at drop-in programs, in shelters, and by word of mouth – meeting every week throughout the summer to learn about how racism, homophobia, and transphobia impact our lives, and studying ways we can use media to make change.  As Sponsored Project of the Allied Media Projects. Grown out of a need for space in Detroit where LGBTQ youth of color could learn and practice organizing, we use media as a vehicle to transform our oppression on our own terms.

This year, new and veteran members got to hang out together for the first time at the Allied Media Conference: hosting a workshop about media organizing by and for LGBTQ youth of color. Since then, we've produced a radio demo featuring our experiences with homelessness, met with youth organizers from across the country, and of course, participated in What's Your Issue's national week of action -- hosting a survey party, and helping allied organizations in our region to do the same.

At the same time our members and coordinators discussed community problems like anti-HIV stigma, anti-LGBTQ discrimination in shelters, and street violence, we were also learning how to make our own media. With some workshops led by collective members and others hosted by guests like Glennisha Morgan,  Invincible, Nadia Ann Abou-Karr, and Kelly Guillory, we started imagining pathways to put our creativity to use in transforming our oppression.

As we move into the new year, Our members are preparing to launch the media-based campaigns they've been dreaming up all summer. Using graphic design to help LGBTQ youth of color recognize abuse, our members plan to conduct outreach that will link survivors to the support that they need. Two of our members still living at home and unable to be "out" hope to use the internet to reach others like them -- Arab queer youth who feel isolated and cut off -- providing visibility and support that can be almost impossible to find. Other members' ideas are still in formation -- but look for us to announce them soon! Our youth organizers will be posting videos, blogs, photos, and interviews to our facebook page over the coming weeks. For more on what we're up to,you can follow us there!
