You can't separate Roosterteeth and Crwby when the shows themes and messaging is a reflection of the work environment.

Roosterteeth totally didn't try to paint her as a disingenuous, disgruntled employee and have been called out before by other employees for having a "You against us" and toxic positivity work place mentality where you are shunned and put on a list of "troublemakers" if you dare try to offer any criticism /s.

Total coincidence how Rwby parrots the same "you against us", toxic positivity mentality ripe within Roosterteeth where the good guys turned bay guys are all the people that wont let Ruby just do as she pleases. Its almost as if...gasp! Crwby and Roosterteeth are the same!

Not dnp related, but I just saw that Roosterteeth is shutting down and my mind is blown. I haven't watched them since high school since that's around the time they stopped making the content I enjoyed and diversified way too much to the point that it was hard to keep up. It's honestly really sad to see, they made such wonderful stuff early on and im assuming it's Warner that destroyed them but god I just feel bad for them all on insta at the moment begging for work. That's fucked up... it seems like there was absolutely no heads up. You could tell it was coming eventually but I guess I'm still in the mindset of the RT Podcast and Achievement Hunter being my favourite things in the world even though both have been gone for ages now. Just really sucks and my heart goes out to the ogs that have been blindsided.

And blaming Jacques for no one wanting help from the Schnee's is insane, but let's just skip to my conclusion: This whole concern about reforming the Schnee name is entirely centered on Weiss and how she feels about each individual Schnee based on what they did to her, (i.e Nicholas is fine even though he started the SDC and destroyed Vacuo because he was nice to Weiss, but Jacques is evil because he abused her) whatever the Schnee's did to people not named Weiss is secondary even though that's the root of the problem.

I would say that it's Weiss' failing for not questioning why the world at large doesn't like the Schnee's and work to fix that issue, but the universe(i.e the writers) has already conveyed that Jacques was the singular problem even though it doesn't make any sense.

I think that was a good end. I wish Wash would have actually talked to Tucker, and I'm sad we didn't see Donut and no canon grimmons but that was a long shot. I wish there was a bit more of Tucker as himself, but he's been the main character for a while so it was nice to focus on the others. the actual ending after the fight did feel a little rushed, I would have liked a bit more of Blue team recovering. also is it now just Simmons and Lopez vs Caboose, Tucker, Wash, and Carolina, or are the Freelancers going to leave?

All in all I liked it :) I think the most important thing was the everyone was in character. I know people are going to nitpick it and tear it apart, but it honestly could have been way worse.

oh god. i havent posted abt rts death yet. ok here we go. as someone whos minimal sense of identity hinges almost entirely on rwby and has been my largest special interest and without exaggeration my earliest memories are watching this fucking show (trauma based memory gap from birth to age 11 😘) it is objectively a good thing that roosterteeth is dead. there have been countless documented cases of awful workplace environments and former employees (ON THIS WEBSITE.) coming forward have been incredibly brave and incredibly undeserving of what's been done to them.

A few people having been fired is not enough of an uprooting of workplace culture, and as much as i held onto a sliver of hope that such an uprooting was possible, i can't say that it did and im glad that this company (although much smaller compared to other harmful companies) is dead in the water and can no longer abuse its employees and i hope those who participated in that behavior (WHO HAVE NOT APOLOGIZED AND GROWN. i think it's worth noting that specific people's acknowledgements of their actions and subsequent apologies were accepted by those hurt and i think we should respect that) should rot and die a thousand deaths and i hope they are forever haunted by what they did and struggle to get careers after this all.

there is a sense of tragedy in a small, built from the ground up type company being bought out by a conglomerate and being destroyed in a few years after being deemed not profitable enough. capitalist greed is not something to be applauded and the pattern of this happening is objectively tragic. this specific case is complicated, but, imo, objectively good for the harm rt has caused, and i hope it brings relief and peace to its victims.

and my final point: i wholeheartedly believe everything I've said above. However, despite my genuine belief that this was a good thing, i specifically feel deeply miserable about the probable end of rwby, something that is deeply flawed but also incredibly important to me. It might be picked up by someone else, they MIGHT even get original people to work on it, and it may even be similar to what it has been, but it will never be the same. and that's good, because that was at the cost of many people's wellbeing. but im still emotional over it and its affecting me very strongly and negatively. id love to be this attached to near anything else, but its been 10 years and it hasn't wavered so im afraid were shit outta luck there. Fuck rt, and im still incredibly upset abt rwby and will probably care abt it until i die. Sorry. ☹️✌️

today i was like 'man, i haven't checked up on anything roosterteeth related in years, i wonder how they're doing?'

a burning building. a sinking ship. the plane is going down. oh my fucking god. it's not that i'm exactly shocked, but more surprised at how much this is destroying them, considering they had been openly like this for years, but then seemingly changed (well kinda, but not really, as some of the info revealed), and so i just thought that the community forgave them and moved on....

nah, turns out that the community could recover from RT being terrible employers (came out years ago), horrible fratboy culture (came out years ago), censoring of fans (has been occurring for years), racist (found out years ago), harbouring a predator (they weren't exactly aware, but facilitated a culture that normalised it), but transphobia was the straw that broke the camel's back lmao. the cherry on top is that they would call said former employee f*ggot as a nickname.....UNTIL he came out as a trans woman, then they stopped. they wrote the n word on a whiteboard for their black coworker to see, but the one thing they won't touch is trans lmao. all superficial, of course. they'd trot him out as their evidence of inclusivity, but then have him work so hard, for such little pay, that at one point he got pneumonia. it just shows the pure virtue signaling that all these progressive companies have. whatever the latest zeitgeist is, and currently it's trans and genders, that's what they lean into full force.

2022 Webcomic Roundup: Disability Pride Month Edition!

It’s the middle of Disability Pride Month, but that doesn't mean there should stop the focus on characters with disabilities. The eight webcomics featured in this month’s roundup celebrate various relationships, and stories, of characters with physical and mental disabilities. Webcomics featured are mainly from WebToon* and elsewhere.

Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 17, 2023, and Ghostarchive. This was the forty-sixth article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on July 19, 2022.

In June, I reviewed animated characters with trauma and previously examined socially awkward characters in anime. This post is an extension of those articles but only focuses on webcomics. You may remember that I reviewed 16 webcomics for the "Wednesday Webcomics" segment from October 2021 to February of this year.

This month I'm covering for Brahidaliz Martinez who has artfully written prior webcomic roundups. So, without further ado, let me begin with these comics which fit with Disability Pride Month.

RWBY Quest

This interactive fan comic ran from February 2014 to May 2015, for a total of 1000 images. Based on the RoosterTeeth series, RWBY, it was a hit in the fandom at the time. The comic, which is for mature audiences and themes, features the show's characters like Ruby Rose, Lie Ren, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long. The latter has a prosthetic arm.

This is also shown in the animated series which features Neopolitan, a mute antagonist, and Professor Ozpin, who often uses a cane. These characters, and others appeared in the anime spin-off, RWBY: Ice Queendom, which began airing earlier this month.

Assigned Male

Stephie reveals she is autistic in an April 2018 issue of Assigned Male

This webcomic, by Sophie Labelle, a trans woman and cartoonist, features Stephanie "Stephie" Bondu. She is an 11-year-old trans girl, with the comic showing her exploration of this identity. She is autistic and later comes out as bisexual. This webcomic was originally posted on Tumblr, then re-posted under a new title, Serious Trans Vibes, by Labelle on Line Webtoon.

Nimona

Originally a webcomic, and later printed as a graphic novel, this fantasy webcomic is by ND Stevenson, who recently came out as Nate. He is known for his role as showrunner of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. This webcomic follows the story of a shapeshifter named Nimona who joins Ballister Blackheart, with both working to destroy an over-controlling institution. Ballister has a prosthetic hand throughout the comic, which mixed technology and magic. The comic was recently adapted as an animated film that will premiere next year on Netflix.

Adventure Time: Princess Robot

While there are various Adventure Time fan comics online like ones on Simon Abadeer, one sticks out: Adventure Time: Princess Robot. By Hierogriff and posted on Line Webtoon in 2017, it follows the story of Marceline the Vampire Queen and Princess Bubblegum as they go to a kingdom run by a robot despot. At the end of the comic, Finn is shown without an arm and a flower growing out of it.

This is consistent with the series which showed him with a grass sword growing out of his arm, then a robotic prosthetic arm later in the series. It is similar to the fan comics for series like Final Space, which show Gary with a prosthetic arm like in the series.

AspiGurl

A comic by AspiGurl about the life as an autistic girl

In searching for comics to add to this post, I came across an article about an autistic artist named AspiGurl illustrating her daily reality in 50 comics. What she draws is very relatable to people who are autistic.

AspiGurl's official website describes the comic as expressing the voice of autistic people through "anecdotes or reflections from everyday life", with suggestions from autistic readers for future comics. She also has a Patreon to fund the webcomic.

Skye

The cyborg first makes its appearance in the second episode of this webcomic

In this fantasy webcomic by Cynthia J. Schmitz on Line Webtoon features a cyborg named Cora. Also, the protagonist, Skye, has clear mental strife, as the equivalent of an evil demon is living inside of her. Cora becomes good friends with Skye and seems to have a crush on her, with their closeness growing over the course of the webcomic. Characters who are visually impaired also appear.

Da Yomanville Gang

In this fantasy webcomic by Jason King on Line Webtoon, Layla makes new friends and deals with old ones as she goes through family and interpersonal conflict inside and outside the schoolyard. She has a scar over her left eye, covered by hair at the beginning of the series, which has the effect of impairing her sight out of that eye. It is later uncovered as she becomes more sure of herself.

Hazbin Hotel

Vaggie lays out the deal they are extending to Angel Dust

Vivienne Medrano's indie animated smash hit, Hazbin Hotel, currently in development for a full animated series, is mostly known for its animated pilot. There is also an accompanying webcomic. In the webcomic entitled "Chapter 1: Dirty Healings", (presumably written by Medrano) Charlie and her girlfriend Vaggie are able to convince a pornstar named Angel Dust to stay at their hotel, which attempts to redeem those who've sinned.

Like in the pilot, Vaggie has no eye and it is replaced by an eyepatch, which is reflected in the new designs for the series. Some have also guessed that the pilot has autistic characters, but that hasn't been confirmed.

RWBY ReWatch Volume 4: let’s slow it down now

I’ve rewatched Volumes 1-3 multiple times (though it’s been a long time), either by myself, showing it to a family member, or watching a reaction video of it. I have watched Volume 4 precisely 2 times. Once in the original liveblog, once again with either Jay or my mom. And since it’s been so long, this’ll prob feel like a whole new watch for me.

That being said, I remember this part being a lot slower story wise than the first 3 Volumes, so I’m not sure if I’ll have all too much to say about it.

Ugh, RoosterTeeth moving RWBY onto their own site wouldn’t bother me if they would at least put the character shorts in the playlist with the show. I know they aren’t necessary to watch, but you put effort into them, you’d think you’d make it easy for people to find.

okay, wait i lied, I have rewatched the fight between Qrow and Tyrian. multiple times. because i love it. but I think that’s the only thing in Volume 4 I’ve seen more than twice.

Oh that’s right! Oscar’s introduced in this volume.

I really like the song for the Volume 4 op, Let’s Just Live, it’s actually one of my favorites from the soundtrack. But the visuals are a little... lacking. Some parts even look a little goofy when it’s trying to be serious.

I didn’t forget Ren’s history with his village being destroyed by Grimm, but I didn’t remember how... quickly his anxiety over it seems to crop up when in a similar situation. The second they step into Shion he gets way more curt and... passive-aggressive, we’ll say. That actually adds a lot more context to how he acts in Volume 8 too. It’s pretty similar.

Jacque has a single framed photo on his desk and it’s of Whitley and Whitley alone.

With as jumpy and paranoid as Blake was, how did she not notice the guy in a full body cloak tailing her.

Sun’s so funny, I forgot how good he is this volume.

It’s kind of funny seeing Sun complain about Menagerie being cramped while walking on a wide open street, with like, 10 extra people on it, lol. He doesn’t even bump shoulders with anyone.

I still think Corsac and Fennec have really cute designs.

This Life is Mine is also one of my favorite songs on the soundtrack. Having said that, I realized that I actually haven’t listened to the soundtrack since Volume 4. I should get on that soon.

“If they’re so arrogant that they think they can get by without proper kingdom defenses, then I say good riddance!” I wonder how this lady is feeling when the Grimm start attacking her home turf.

the way he grabs onto Jaune’s shield is sooo funny, but also Jaune has some good upper body strength to be able to hold a full grown man in the air with one arm

Oh, hey! I forgot Tyrian said he had a slight interest in Jaune. We haven’t seen why that is yet. He glances down at Jaune’s shield when he says it, so perhaps it has more to do with Jaune’s family legacy than Jaune himself.

The way he says “Surprise!”. Tyrian’s voice actor is so great, his character wouldn’t be the same without him.

SO funny how everyone just stands there when Ruby is about to be poisoned by Tyrian, fdakjhdsa. I know the intention is probably that none of them would’ve made it in time, but no one even moves to try either. Jaune is the biggest offender, he just stands there and closes his eyes, lol.

Tyrian isn’t even surprised when Qrow shows up, he just giggles a little akhlakfdhsjha

Qrow just fucking punching Tyrian in the face remains one of the funniest things to happen in RWBY.

And also Tyrian shouting “You BITCH!” at Ruby, lmfaoooo. How dare she dismember him, he was only trying to kill all her friends and family and then kidnap and torture her to death! Such a bitchy response.

I think it’s a good thing I decided to rewatch the show. I remember a lot of the broader information, but a lot of the details I’ve forgotten. Like each of the relics representing knowledge, creation, choice, and destruction.

Thinking about the Nukalooka, and if the characters faced off against anything else just as creepy, and then I remembered the fucking Apathy and good god, I am not looking forward to that again.

Tyrian just wants his master to love him, he’s like a little puppy. A completely psychotic little puppy.

Maybe Weiss shouldn’t have worn the loudest shoes in existence while she was trying to sneak out.

“You’ve never trusted anyone but yourself.” “And for good reason!” Good god, Ironwood.

I was actually pretty supportive of Ironwood during this part of the series and I think a large part of that was his actions being framed in opposition to Jacques’. Clearly, if Jacques didn’t like it-- since he is a completely self centered prick-- then it was a good thing to happen. Ironwood had always been extreme, but he ultimately seemed to have his heart in the right place, so his actions weren’t that bad. Now with the context of Ironwood’s downward spiral, it’s all too obvious how fucked in the head he was.

But that’s the great part about rewatching all of this. In hindsight, it’s all so obvious. But just like all the other characters around Ironwood, those who know and support him, it’s hard to see the cracks in the moment.

Soooo, we didn’t see Klein at all since Volume 4 iirc (and I probably don’t), and I can’t remember if it was said why since they’ve been back to Schnee manor a few times since.

I like that the little :3 is still left in the captions while Blake is talking to Sun.

Not quite as much to say for Volume 4, which is what I figured would happen. A good portion of the volume is just quiet character moments and then set up for the next volume. A lot of self explanatory stuff. Still enjoyable, but undeniably slower than what we’re used to with RWBY.

so on learning that after a decade of some of the worst relationship building known to fiction, Roosterteeth finally finally let Bumblebee happen is just one of the most depressing things I’ve had the displeasure of watching. everything about it from the iceshelf pacing, the tongue in cheek jaune going “I was waiting forever for that.” etc, really just destroys yet another aspect of a show I adored as a teenager. I think the best way to summarise it would be “wow, I really needed this queer rep a decade ago when I was still learning how to be myself.”

Part 6: Hunters/Huntresses and Academies

[Fade from black into what appears to be a giant prestigious castle-like building. Multiple people wearing student uniforms seem to be approaching it, talking and laughing. Most of them are human, though there are about 4-5 Faunus in the crowd.] ‘We here at Beacon Academy offer the finest, state-of-the-art Hunter and Huntress training one can afford.’ [It cuts to multiple classrooms, before showing a shot of the Training Arena, where students appear to be training.] ‘Founded by the Great Warrior King Ozma long, long ago, Beacon Academy prides itself in being one of the first, and longest running academies in Remnant. Were he alive today, Ozma would be proud at the state of affairs.’ [It then shows a weapon tinkering class; A student makes a mistake, but they all laugh it off jovially. A caption at the bottom appears, in very small text reads ‘Paid actors.’] ‘Experience state of the art Dust Technologies-’ [A teacher opens up a Hardlight chalkboard, before they begin to draw on it with a sort of plastic laser-baton.] ‘Experienced teachers and high quality, hands on lessons-’ [A combat instructor spars with a student, before knocking them on their ass; The teacher then helps them back onto their feet.] ‘And, of course, a homely and family-like atmosphere.’ [It shows a bunch of students at the cafeteria, eating and talking, laughing all the while.] ‘And now, we are proud to announce the Faunus Integration, as instructed by new headmaster Ozpin Ambroise Diggs.’ [It shows a Faunus Student and a Human Student shaking hands, smiling and nodding.] ‘So, please, consider joining the family. We promise only the finest education needed to become a high quality hunter or huntress.’ [The commercial then devolves into explaining how much money is needed to enroll, who to call, and what to expect. It then ends with a shot of Beacon Academy, students lined up in front of it towards the camera, hands behind their back.] Hunters and Huntresses were among one of the first jobs in the ancient world of Remnant; When Humanity became aware of the threat Grimm pose, they needed people who could stand up to the monsters. They went by many names throughout the years. Shamans. Priests. Knights. It was the Warrior King Ozma that christened them with their current name however, when he enacted the ‘Great Hunt.’ Of course, the connotations of the name have been a bit marred with Anti-Faunus meaning. However, since there are no better titles, most like to ignore these rocky beginnings. Generally speaking, a Hunter’s job is to hunt Grimm, but what they don’t generally explain in most common places is hiring. Hunters and Huntresses can’t just begin to hunt Grimm- Not unless they don’t want to be paid for their services. As such, they usually seek out private contractors, such as big companies or possibly even Academies, to send them out on jobs. Some include Grimm extermination, but, more often than not, they are usually sent off to do odd jobs for the contractor. Whether it be collect dust, ingredients, or even protect specified people, Hunters and Huntresses must then be instructed on various other subjects: Botany, Biology, Dust and their properties, People Skills, so on and so forth.  Generally speaking, a pre-requisite to even join an Academy is the ability to control your Aura. Though it makes sense for the type of work the job entails, it still doesn’t help that, since a majority of Faunus are not able to manipulate Aura, the school does not consider them eligible. The actual percentage of Faunus that are eligible to attend Academies is about 28%, with a total of 13% actually attending. Of course, cities like Atlas have a policy that bans Faunus from participating in any sort of Academia, and since Mistral is still highly unknown, Vacuo is the only city with a high percentage of Faunus attendance in it’s academies. Unfortunately, those Academies are usually considered the bottom of the bin in terms of quality, with the only quality Academies either not allowing Faunus, or having strict entry prerequisites.  The top three Academies in the entire world of Remnant are thus; Caelum Private Academy, located in Atlas. It is an all-boys School that promises only the finest in Male Hunter Training. Getting a Hunter’s License from there is usually a must for those seeking political aspirations. Next is Accipiter Woman’s Academy, located in Atlas as well. Much like how Caelum Private Academy was an all-boys university, Accipiter Woman’s Academy is an all-girls university. And, finally, Beacon Academy, located within Vale. It is not only prestigious for it’s history and up-to-date equipment, but also prides itself in being established by the Warrior King Ozma. It is so distinguished, that only recognizable descendants of Ozma can become Headmaster.  In terms of curriculum, there’s the already discussed options, but there’s also extracurricular classes that one can take if they feel so inclined. Sewing, Cooking, Fine Arts, Theatre, as well as Music and Band are available. Though, of course, the real meat and potatoes of the Academies are the combat classes. The top three use Dust Altered Arenas to not only simulate multiple environments, but also climates, and even Weather. Of course, other less up-to-date schools usually settle for an empty sand lot with benches around it. And, of course, a must for any school is a Scoreboard, displaying the students’ grade level, semblance, and school determined statistics. Though it may change from school to school, the statistics are such: Strength (A measurement of pure brute strength and power, usually determined through a test of lifting incrementally heavier weights), Endurance (A measurement of stamina, used to determine Aura strength), Intelligence (A measurement of quick thinking, strategic thinking and wits, determined by a test) Speed (A measurement of agility and acrobatics, determined by an obstacle course with a timer) and Perception (A measurement of Senses and how the student applies it, usually tested by a reaction test.). Of course, these tests and statistics have not only been proven to be highly inaccurate at times, but can also be a detriment for the students mental health. The statistics are ranked from E to A+, with Aura being determined by measurement of the Aura emanated off a person.  Most high quality Academies require a student uniform of some sort. Though the rules on what they must be varies from Academy to Academy, most of the upper echelon of Academia simply opt for unisex student uniforms, with strict guidelines on combat apparel in place.

Horrific crunch times, underpaid or COMPLETELY UNPAID work, Kdin was called slurs pretty much the entire time she worked at RT, at least pretransition. RT also promised to pay her for her medical transitioning and never did, and barely ever let her on camera and often cut her off of credit for her work. It gets worse, you can find her statement easily.

Then several other members, mostly editors and VAs, said similar things. Unpaid, crunch, threatening to be replaced, and several claims of sexual assault by higher ups. HR knew about all this and covered it up, and apparently some of the people who did the covering up still work there.

RT made the most lawyer-y, useless statements about it, and said they aren't gonna pay Kdin what they owe her. I believe this will be the death of the company, as it should be.

There's no way they have the balls for it, but I think the morally sound thing for the big name employees to do, especially the Achievement Hunters, should all fucking quit

“The Realm of Possibility is Open! 3, 2, 1!”

I had a dream Roosterteeth announced a gacha game halfway between Nier Reincarnation and Fire Emblem Heroes. It was pretty neat because I think the concept of it was to show off characters from RWBY and then show off all the different ways they could have gone (ie Ice Queendom or other).

The whole twist here is that Ruby caused the end of her world, either by an honest mistake or by letting Salem summon the Gods back to Remanent before humanity was ready. As a result of the loss of her world and the murder of everyone she ever knew, she and her Lif counterpart are called ‘Phatasms, Those Who Lack Origin’ in their service to a God who promised to restore their world if they helped it grow stronger than the Brothers.

The god they serve is defined as “formless as the dark, but cutting as the light, with a name that called to Justice” and that same god feeds on Possibility. Ruby opens worlds to possibility using the Staff of Creation, formed into a scythe, and her master devours potential timelines like fruit from a tree. Oscar (the probable Lif) would use the Sword of Destruction to destroy the world, and those people that survived would be the Gacha Prizes!

I think Ruby would be ashamed of her actions, and take on another name (Alice for now) and adapt to another personality. Something like Dimitri (FE3H) or Hakumen (BlazBlue), but definitely extraordinarily mentally unwell.
