Here's a look at my 2022 highlights! It was another great year of long rides, short rides, dirt, gravel, indoor & road rides, hikes, kayaks, cross-country skis ... hundreds of adventures. Some with friends, some solo but each one exactly what I needed when I needed it. Someone asked me once why I ride so much .. aside from the fitness benefits, it's my mental well-being that gets the biggest boost. In order to be present and useful to those around me, I need to be present and useful to my myself first. 07/22/2017 - Bigfoot 40 Mile. Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument: Circumnavigating Mt St Helens, this was by far one of the most scenic and beautiful, hardest and gratifying mini life-in-a-day 40 miler I've ever run. Ascending through majestic old growth forest and emptying directly into an ankle turning lava boulder field we traversed the volcano counterclockwise almost exclusively along the Loowit Trail. With ever higher panoramic breathtaking vistas of Mt St Helens, Mt Adams and Mt Hood we got our first taste of the carnage left by the 1980 eruption along Windy Ridge and the Plains of Abraham. Past eye popping fields of wildflowers, we glimpsed Mt Rainier to the north and fully entered the desolate exposed blast zone. Although the north side of the volcano took the brunt of the violent eruption, the pumice laden landscape is anything but devoid of massive emptiness. As we crossed in full out exposed 90 degree sun, the rock and ash slowly gave way to moss and ground cover and we teetered our way down the edge of the eroded canyon of the South Fork Toutle River. We crossed the shin high river only after having to use a rope to make it up and down the bank and happily took our time climbing out of the canyon soaking in the much needed shade. After refilling and resetting at Blue Lake Aid Station we ventured for the final 13 miles, but first we witnessed a cotton candy sunset worthy of any spread in every magazine, we picked our way by headlamp across another lava field and finally came full circle descending back down the old growth forest finishing under pitch black sky and shimmering stars in 13:46. . @destinationtrailraces . . #MtStHelens #WA #UpperLeftUSA #PNW #CascadiaExplored #PNWonderland #DestinationTrail #TrailRunning #Volcano #MtAdams #MtHood #MtRainier #Trailto50 #TT50
