#Destielmonth22 Day 8: Sleep

He used to need only four hours.

Figured he lost the capacity to stay horizontal for more than that ages ago. Left it somewhere between the motel rooms shared with a crying baby and a drunk dad (always coming in late, stumbling on everything and failing miserably at not waking him up) and the decades of accumulated nightmares.

He's read the articles and watched the news anchors stating that eight is what a human needs to function properly. And he figured he's just different. Besides, this is just another thing in life he only gets half of. That's okay. He knows how to deal in halves. For a long time, his entire life was compromised of almosts, unfinished things, the leftovers of the should've beens. He got half the parents, half the money, half the education, half the friends that are still alive, and (not even) half the dad that Adam had... But he managed. He always has.

He still wakes up startled more often than not, and his hand immediately reaches for the handgun under his pillow. He knows he doesn't need it anymore. The last time he hunted anything was ages ago, but he's pissed off enough creatures to garante a lifetime of revenge seekers. He hasn't gotten any in five years since moving out of the bunker. But he still doesn't fully believe he got away with actually retiring. He keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop, for his past to finally catch up with him, and come drag him back into The Life.

A good 10% of his nightmares are about that. Losing the cabin, and the memory foam mattress, and the warm body he gets to share it with.

So keeping a gun always within reach provides him with a weird peace of mind. Its heavy presence under the pillow a reminder that, if needed, he can still fight back. It's not needed, Cas keeps telling him in an annoyed voice whenever he finds it as he makes the bed. But he still puts it back every time because he knows a part of Dean does still need it. Or, at least, needs to know that it's there.

He knows Dean often needs to be reminded that certain things and people are still there. That he gets to have them, at last.

After checking on his gun, he checks up on Cas. Makes sure he's still there. And he always is. Sprawled out on his side of the bed, chest rising and falling slowly with every breath. Or, feet thrown back so they can still tangle with Dean's, even if Cas has his back turned to him. Or, arm draped over Dean's stomach, his body a line of warmth on Dean's back, drool drying on Dean's shoulder. Or, head resting on Dean's chest. Or, on his side facing Dean and keeping him there with a hand on his waist.

Cas is always there.

Unlike Dean, he could sleep for twelve hours straight if left to his own devices. It's kind of impressive. The fact that he can now spend the better part of a day in bed, when for millenia he never needed as much as a nap. Comes with becoming human, they guessed.

The good news is, now Dean gets treated with watching Cas sleep. After he wakes up, startled or not, he gets to spend the first minutes –sometimes hours– of his day gazing at the sleeping figure of the man he loves. And it truly is a treat. The way Cas' now graying hair sticks up in all directions, the slow waves of air that come in and out of his nose, the flutter of his eyelids as he dreams.

Dean used to need only four hours of sleep. Now, on a good day he gets up to nine. And when he wakes up, he gets treated to the best view he's ever seen, he gets to slide his hands underneath Cas' shirt and kiss him awake.

It felt over indulgent at first. But he's starting to get used to it. To getting full things and not just scraps. To the way Cas' blue eyes lose their sleepy haze as they focus on him. To the curve of his smile as he slowly opens his mouth to say, every morning, without fail,

“Hello, Dean. I love you.”

In the eight years since our first round, Pinefest authors have written 253 incredible fics comprising a collective 9.8 million words worth of pining, and artists have been inspired to create 811 gorgeous works of art to be viewed alongside them.

Now, we're excited to announce the opening of our ninth round – and we'd love for you to join us!

Registration will remain open until September 30th for authors, while artists may continue to sign up until December 1st.

Artists and authors will be paired through an anonymous claims process on December 14th, and artists will have 3 months to work on their art before posting commences on pi(e) day – March 14, 2025!

IT'S FINALLY HERE, PEOPLE, OUR PROMPT LIST FOR THIS YEAR'S FANOVEMBER!!! (Written list below the line)

We decided to go through literary genres this time, although you can fit the prompt however you please (by using the literal word in your piece, a small reference, or writing in the style of that prompt!)

→We'll be posting some ideas every day to spark creativity if any prompt in particular doesn't work well for you. Although you don't have to complete the challenge 100% (I won't, more on that later)

→There's no limit on extension at all, whatever you need will be fine. (At least 200 words was the initial idea, but I, for instance, sometimes need less)

→You can write in any language you want, we'll repost anyway. It's also valid if you mix languages! (I'll use Spanish since the media I've chosen is originally in that language)

→Arists are welcome too, of course!

My submission for day 1 ‘Autumn’ of Suptober24! @wigglebox

The boys go pumpkin picking. Dean spends ages looking for the perfect pumpkin, it can't just be any old squash, it has to be 'the one' and as he looks across the orange field, he eyes find a certain angel.

Castiel, always one for strays, collects all the misshapen and discoloured pumpkins and convinces the hunter to let him get them all because he's sad no one else will want them.

Also, Sam is there. Kind of, he finds an excuse to leave the field, refusing to be the third wheel of this weird eye-fucking tricycle any longer.

June 12th, prompt: Adventure

Grey has overtaken Dean's hair.

His skin has gone soft and wrinkly, his knees crack every time he crouches down, his steps have become slower, his arms weaker.

But that's okay, that's just what old age is like. He's just lucky he gets to experience it at all, and with Cas by his side - equally grey, equally wrinkly. Getting old really isn't all that bad when you get to watch the love of your life doing it alongside you.

Today, Jack has told them. Dean had known it was coming, it's alright.

"You ready?", Dean asks that night, a wrinkly hand searching for Cas' under the blanket.

"Yes." Cas squeezes his fingers, smiling calmly. And despite the lump in his throat, Dean isn't afraid, and he knows neither is Cas. "I've been ready for some time."

"I know, sweetheart."

"Are you scared?"

Dean's heart is beating a little too fast, but he shakes his head.

"Not really", he says truthfully. "Bit nervous, maybe. But hey, that's what imminent death will do to ya."

"It'll be fine, Dean." Cas pulls Dean's hand to his lips, presses a kiss to skin marked by age spots. "We'll be together in the Heaven our son built for us. If you know it's not the end, death is nothing but the next great adventure."

Cas is right, of course.

"And I can't wait to go on that adventure with you."

"See you soon", Cas smiles right before they close their eyes. "I love you."

"Love you, too."

Dean falls asleep with a feeling of peacefulness filling his whole body, and when he opens his eyes again, their bedroom is gone. He stands on a bridge surrounded by forest, body young and strong. Baby is there, but he doesn’t get in. He waits.

There's a shift in the breeze, a presence in his back.

"Hello, Dean."

And Dean smiles.

Let the adventure begin.

It all clicks in Sam’s head as he tells Cas how Dean was behaving around Cassie. 10 years replaying in his mind all of a sudden. Cas asks him what he understood and Sam tells him Dean is in love with him. From there, nothing is stopping Cas anymore. This fic was written for the 5K by 5 May event.

Prompt 1

Dean never thought he’d find peace.  The hunter was accustomed to the roar of engines and the hiss of danger, not the gentle lull of waves. Yet, here he was, standing on a deserted stretch of beach, the wind ruffling his flannel shirt, as he watched the horizon turn from gold to a deep, calming blue.

Beside him, Castiel stood quietly, his ever-present trench coat fluttering in the breeze. The angel’s blue eyes reflected the vastness of the ocean, capturing the same power and beauty Dean had come to cherish. They had fought countless battles together, faced down monsters, and saved the world more times than he cared to count. But this moment felt different. It felt like a victory all on its own. The sun dipped lower, casting a warm glow over the sand. Dean glanced at Castiel, his heart swelling with feelings that had grown quietly, like the tide creeping up the shore. He thought of the countless times Cas had saved him, not just from physical dangers, but from the darkness within himself. The angel has been his anchor, his constant, in a life filled with chaos.

“Dean,” Castiel’s voice was soft, barely louder than the lapping of the waves. “Why did you bring me here?”

Dean shrugged, a small smile playing at his lips. “Thought it was time we had a break. Besides,” he added, turning to face Cas fully, “you deserve to see something beautiful.”

Castiel’s gaze softened, a hint of confusion mingling with the affection in his eyes. “I have seen beauty, Dean. I see it every time I look at you.”

Dean felt a blush creep up his neck, and he ducked his head, scuffing his boot in the sand. “Shut up, Cas,” Dean responded, although it was hard for him to disguise his pleasure.

They stood in comfortable silence, the sound of the ocean filling the space between them. Dean reached out, hesitantly at first, and took Castiel’s hand in his. The touch was grounding, electric.

“Is this ok?” Dean asked, his voice rough with the rush of emotion.

Castiel’s eyes searched Dean’s face, before dropping his gaze to their hands. Castiel was silent for a long time before looking back up at Dean, his face flushed, his eyes shining.  “Dean...?” Castiel responded, incredulity, hope, and love clear in his eyes.

Dean took a deep breath, the words tumbling out before he could second-guess himself. “I love you, Cas. I’ve loved you for a long time.”

For a moment, Castiel said nothing, his expression unchanged. Then, a slow, radiant smile spread across his face. “I love you too, Dean. More than you know.”

Dean felt a weight lift off his shoulders, a sense of completeness he hadn’t realized he was missing. He pulled Castiel into a gentle embrace, their foreheads touching.  Dean felt an unfamiliar sense of calm settle over him. The ocean's rhythmic murmur seemed to echo the newfound peace in his heart. The world around them seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them standing on the beach, enveloped in the soft, dimming light.

Dean looked out at the ocean, the waves gently lapping at the shore. "You know, I used to think I'd never find a place where I could just... be. Where I could stop running from everything."

Castiel tilted his head, a small smile playing on his lips. "And now?"

Dean turned back to him, the corners of his mouth lifting in a shy smile. "Now, I think I've found it, with you."

Castiel's expression softened, his eyes reflecting all the mystery and allure of the boundless sea. "You are my home, Dean," he said quietly, his voice carrying the weight of eternity. "No matter where we go, as long as we're together, I will always have peace."

The words hung in the air, mingling with the sound of the waves and the faint call of distant seabirds. Dean nodded, feeling the truth of them resonate. He leaned in, resting his head against Castiel's shoulder, savoring the quiet intimacy of the moment.

Bathed in the tranquil glow of the moon and stars, the two men stood, side by side on that long stretch of sand, while the waves continued their gentle dance.

And in that moment, everything felt right. Complete.  It felt like the end of one journey and the start of another – a new chapter in their lives, with the sweetest of beginnings... written right there, together, by the edge of the sea.

Destiel:

1. Dean and Castiel have lived next to each other for years, but they're barely acquaintances. One day, Dean falls off his ladder while outside, and injures himself. Cas sees and calls 911, insisting that he follow Dean to the hospital. After a short stay in the hospital, and with a heavy cast on the injured limb, Dean comes home. When he does, Cas offers to help him with daily chores. It's an offer Dean can't refuse. Strangers to friends... to lovers? You decide!    (Credit to NEG85 on ao3)

2. Castiel is looking for a job after graduating with a degree in business. Dean is the CEO of a corporation and his executive assistant just quit. Dean also helps his friend Charlie at her strip club sometimes, if one of her dancers calls out. Castiel's friends take him out to the strip club one night to congratulate him on his new job, and Dean ends up giving him a lap dance. They have an instant connection, and exchange numbers after the dance. Come Monday morning, they discover that Castiel's new job... is as Dean's new assistant.    (No credit)        

3. Dean is an assassin for hire who is convinced that he's hidden his occupation from Cas, his husband of twelve years. Cas has known about Dean since before they got married, but hasn't said anything because he thinks Dean is cute when he's trying to be covert. Then, one day, everything changes, and Dean finds out just how much Castiel knows.     (Credit to blackhorsedances on ao3)

All Ships:

1. Character A is bored with their life. They've had no luck in love, a job they hate, and are looking for a way out. A relative they've never heard of dies, leaving Character A as the sole beneficiary of their will - including a little garlic bread shop in a remote, but beautiful, village. It takes time to warm up to the new life, to find out what's important, but meeting Character B helps put things in perspective. They clash at first, but eventually A and B fall in love. As they do, A discovers that the village is plagued with vampires, and the late relative was the last in a long line of vampire hunters. Can A find true love, keep the world safe from vampires, AND manage not to burn the garlic bread?    (No credit)

2. A young villain tries to mug Character A, but when he sees their face, he flees in terror. Upon further investigation, Character A finds out that their high school sweetheart, Character B, is now the most powerful villain in the world - and that they've got Chracter A on their "'Do Not Harm Or Else' list."    (No credit)

3. Character A wakes up to find that they drunkenly got married to Character B in Vegas. Whether they knew each other already or are complete strangers is up to you. While trying to get a divorce/annulment, one or both of them realize that maybe they don't want to end the marriage after all. 2024 is coming and it's time to share the Reading Challenge 2024 Destiel Edition

Remember, it's all for fun! You read what you like to read, there are no obligations and it’s not a competition.

There are so many fanfics that deserve attention, the nice thing is to talk about them among ourselves and give us suggestions!

I will try to choose fanfics with few hits, in 2024, because I'm sure there are lots of little gems hidden in our archive, even if I already know that for two prompts I won't be able to be faithful in this regard.
