"I don't know about... longer term goals. I think," Derek says, looking pensively out the window, "that I would like to start by just... being comfortable existing. I would like to get to a place where hearing a door close doesn't freak me out, or where I can sleep through the night without drugs, or where I can go for a walk without just... feeling terrified of what might come up on me. And maybe, if I can find happiness beyond that, I don't think I could ask for anything else."

"But what about, if we assume that those two things are like... available to you. Then what would your goals be?" Jack asks. He selects another piece of pizza and takes a massive bit just to help split his attention. Even still, he can't keep his eyes off Derek's profile.

"Maybe I would go back to school," Derek says softly. "I would like to find work that is comfortable, and maybe eventually I'd like to settle down with someone," he continues, a smile both in his voice and on his expression. "I don't need a big house or tons of land or a lot of money. I think I would be happy to just have a piece of the earth that is safe and is warm and is ours."
