Introduction

Kiltro is an indie latin folk rock project created by Chilean-American musician Chris Bowers Castillo while working as a walking tour guide in Valparaíso, a formerly prosperous port city northwest of Santiago, Chile. After the opening of the Panama Canal, the city transformed into an elusive haven of bohemians and stray dogs - or "quiltros", Chilean slang for "mutt". Inspired by the liminal nature of Valparaíso, Chris wrote a series of short stories that would later evolve into the material of the band, using the symbol of the stray dog as both a metaphorical vehicle and an empowering term for his mixed identity and music, ultimately naming the band after them. Subsequently, he would reunite with an old college friend, Will Parkhill, who would go on to join as the band's bassist, alongside Michael Devincenzi as their drummer. Together, they would shape the sound of Kiltro, reanimating Chris's stories into the mysterious characters, melodic allure, and intangible soundscapes that comprise and lurk beneath their debut album Creatures of Habit. Later on, affected by the quarantine, the band took a more introspective approach, deciding to use cats as a motif for their sophomore record, Underbelly, inspired by their solitary and contemplative nature. Q (regulus_di): What's the best show the band has ever had, or alternatively the most special?

WILL: the last run of tour had the most special shows in a while, especially the navy pier in Chicago, Vienna, and Brooklyn. The growth and excitement has been extremely exciting to see.

CHRIS: The show on the staircase outside of a friend’s restaurant, in Valparaiso, Chile.

MICHAEL: the shows in which there are zero expectations about the city have been the best. Every time we arrive in a town that we know nothing about, we are blown away by the hospitality that we receive. Towns like Columbus, Phoenix, Richmond, Vienna, and Detroit come to mind.

FEZ: can’t decide. He says it’s like asking him what his favorite meal of all time is, “they all filled my tum tum” 😂

SOUND CREW: the Hollywood theater in Vancouver, BC, and Baby’s Alright in NY have sounded the absolute best From Chris's favorite show 😱

Q (goodman873): Chris solo album?

A: Currently the focus is Kiltro, if a song is written that seems out of place for the current state of the project, it’s often left on the shelf to return to at another time. There are a handful of songs that were planned for Underbelly that ultimately didn’t make it onto the final version for one reason or another, the possibility of them being included on a future album always exists. If a song appears that categorically falls outside of the vision of the band, then a solo project might be considered, but the ultimate goal is to experiment and push musical boundaries.

Q (evantheblank): Favorite unreleased / scrapped song, and is it planned to be available at some point?

A: There are tons of demos that have silly working titles, some of the songs that make it into the final version often don’t have a legitimate name until close to the end of the writing process.

CHRIS: the song Alpaca that was written as the same time as Guanaco, different energy but in the same vein and style. Never played live

WILL: Sin Salida that was included in an Instagram reel with a bunch of Super 8 footage

Q (allisawr): Any plans to record a live album?

THE BAND: we try to capture every show 😉

SOUND CREW: We are currently multitrack recording every live show for reference purposes and our personal archives. If a particular recording stands out, then it will be heavily considered for a live release.

Q (syd1288): What's with the cover art of Creatures of Habit?

A: The cover was a collaborative piece done by Markus Puskar and Julian Brier, heavily inspired by the work of M.C. Escher

The songs on CoH have a lot to do with the monotonous liminal spaces in our everyday lives, and the lyrics are very character driven. The art is meant to invoke the illusion of a society that feels like it is going in loops and circles, in which we are becoming “creatures of habit.”

Q (regulus_di): What games are the guys into atm/pre-tour?

A: We love to play giant jenga and a card game called “Hanabi,” we also invented a pool game called “twenty ball” in which Will is the (heavily disputed) champion.

Chris is currently working through another play through of Dark Souls, he’s been tearing through it on the switch in the van. We’ve also played The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and a lot of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Stardew Valley and Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic are also big hits on the iPad.

Q (kalamaroe): What inspired the visuals in the If I Lead music video? I've always found it very hypnotising

A: Generally the band doesn’t like to be too specific with the meaning of the artistic content and likes to leave it more to interpretation from the audience. At the time that the video was shot, the band was interested in experimenting with old school classroom projectors, spinning images, double exposures in Will’s photography, and super 8 film footage. The goal was to add visual content to live shows, and a lot of the footage came from that effort.

Q (happidragon): What are the band members' favorite songs to perform?

WILL: it’s hard to pin down and is always changing based upon each performance, but Guanaco is always up there

CHRIS: it really depends on the show, Softy has been a favorite recently because of how dynamic it is, and Lovers of death is another that has been a longtime standard in the sets for that same reason.

MICHAEL: Underbelly, Softy and Lovers of death are all favorites. The dynamics and drum progression allows for a lot of exploration in each performance.

FEZ: Crazy because of the shaker and wood blocks, there are a lot of fun little percussion parts

SOUND CREW: Errasuriz is the most fun to mix, and is always right in the middle of the set when we really have things dialed in.

Q (gumibearheart): How do you guys approach music and the moving parts of it?

A: The writing process is slightly different for each song but tends to coalesce in a similar way, with lyrics typically coming later on in the process. Many songs that start as musical loops get jammed on in rehearsal and recorded as practice demos, the most exciting material eventually evolves into something worth returning to.

Q (starfunkbonnibel): What has been your approach in connecting all these sounds with the themes and stories of your songs? And are there any plans to do one continuous narrative in an album?

CHRIS: I think the soundscapes and by extension the “story” comes from whatever I’m interested in or experiencing at the time of writing. I start in one place, whether it’s a chords progression or an interesting ambient loop, and move in whatever direction feels most compelling and true. I find that a lot of ideas begin to link together because I tend to cycle back on ideas multiple times throughout the process. Because I’m working it out for myself. That goes for sounds, samples and progressions too. Overarching themes or the recurring “character” of the sounds and the places they evoke emerge as the process goes on, and in that is often a kind of story. Or many stories in a similar setting. I visualize things a lot when I’m writing.

In a sense, I think we already work “narratively,” it’s just that there’s not necessarily a script or a series of events. I’d like to make albums that exist in a specific space and create the context for meanings and patterns to emerge. Not a narrative per se. There are bands that do that well but I like to keep things more abstract.

Q (goldengoldstar): Although we know of the influence artists like Víctor Jara, Violeta Parra and Atahualpa Yupanqui have had on the music of Kiltro, are there any other artists or bands you might mention as big influences or inspirations?

A: Thanks to everyone who listens to and shares the Kiltro playlist! This is a stream of consciousness list from all the guys in the band in no particular order: Manu Chao, Deerhunter, Devendra Banhart, Ween, Talking Heads, Jorge Ben, Radiohead, Damon Albarn, Thelonious Monk, Damu the Fudgemunk, Moses Sumney, Animal Collective, John Coltrane, Boards of Canada, Chico Trujillo, OutKast, Teke Teke, Travel Kit, New Order, Kraftwerk, Stereolab, Broadcast, Jack Canaan, Charles Mingus, Sonic Youth, Polo y Pan, Andrew Bird, Marvin Gaye, Metronomy, Sade, YĪN YĪN, Fela Kuti, Tortoise, Cocteau Twins, Air, and Erlend Øye.

Q (goldengoldstar): Are there any plans to play in Latin America?

A: No plans currently, but it’s definitely a long-term goal

Q (starfunkbonnibel): What are your favorite moments of experimentation during the making of Underbelly?

KYLE: During the production/recording process of Curicó (being one of the first songs Chris, Will, and I dove into, if I remember correctly) I was in the studio with Chris focusing on the song’s momentum. I believe this may have been before real drums were put down? Idk, can’t completely remember… but my goal in that session was to add excitement and some kind of uplifting drive to the song. In one moment, I was trying to think of a way to show Chris how we “could” add a particular energy to the song to see if he liked the idea/direction. I decided to give Chris an example by grabbing a shitty/lofi mic and shouting “HEY! HEY! HEY!.. etc” into the mic along with what we had recorded so far. And I was like, “that’s the kinda of energy I’m thinking we can add,” and then Chris was basically like… we should just keep that hahahaha. In that moment I personally felt like we or I at least had figured out a key to the energy of that song, and also my creative flow with Chris, Will, and so forth going forward. Not to mention the beginning of a great friendship 🙂 this was fun to write about! Thanks to everyone here for being a part of their music ✨🐕 This wasn’t about Underbelly, but it’s what the question made me think of lol sorry But still fits a vibe of how I think we all have fun working together on all the music 🙂

Kiltro - All The Time In The World 2023

Chilean-American singer-songwriter Chris Bowers Castillo moved to the port city of Valparaíso and became a walking tour guide. Back in Denver, Chris had looked for a moniker that reflected the evocative and subtly rebellious musical concepts percolating in his head, and settled on kiltro - a word used in Chile for stray dogs or mutts. He then teamed up with bassist Will Parkhill and drummer Michael Devincenzi, later inviting Fez García to join the band as an additional percussionist on Kiltro’s live gigs.

Titled Underbelly, Kiltro’s sophomore album crystallizes those dreams and experiences into a post-rock manifesto of dazzling beauty. Its songs combine touches of shoegaze, ambient and neo-psychedelia with the soulful transcendence of South American folk – the purity of stringed instruments, supple syncopated percussion and elusive melodies that define the works of Latin American legends such as Violeta Parra, Víctor Jara and Atahualpa Yupanqui. From the propulsive, chant-like groove of “Guanaco” to the art-pop panache of “All the Time in the World,” Underbelly is the kind of record that invites you to quiet down and listen, savoring every single detail.

On May 7, 2019, a disturbed student hiding guns walked into the STEM High School in Highlands Ranch, a suburb of Denver, Colorado. His intention was to kill as many students as he could.

He pulled out a gun and yelled, “Nobody move!”

Rather than being a helpless, frightened victim, 18 year old senior Kendrick Castillo, who was close by, attacked the gunman. Castillo was shot in the chest and died, but his actions inspired several other students to do the same and gave them the time needed to close in. The gunman was disarmed and held until police arrived to arrest him. The gunman is now serving life without parole in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Kendrick was just three days away from graduating.

At the same time, that gunman’s partner entered the middle school across the street with the intention of doing the same thing. She (born female but claiming to be transitioning to male) was tackled and disarmed by a security guard and held for police. She is also now serving a life sentence in the Colorado Department of Corrections, but because she was 16 years old at the time, she is eligible for parole after 40 years.

Kendrick Castillo was the only death, though eight other students were wounded.

I intentionally did not use the names of the shooters. They do not deserve that recognition. This is a picture of Kendrick Castillo, a face that not enough people have seen and whose story not enough people have heard of.

"when did you get so sappy? it's adorable," aranya replied with a grin, momentarily forgetting about the game at hand and letting the ping pong ball bounce to the ground on her side. "you distracted me with all this talking, i swear." her words were spoken jokingly, rolling her eyes in mock annoyance before picking up the ball and taking another serve. "hey, maybe my future husband could be working in the same place as you, you can't say all of them are assholes. i always told myself i wanted to be married before 30," she replies, entirely serious about the ordeal. it isn't hard to see how denver's expression changes, enough to bring a smile back to her face. "my lips are sealed," she says, gesturing over her mouth. "what's there to be lost about? if you like someone, it should be easy. the hard part is probably… learning how to be open with someone about your feelings, that's all."

" i'm smarter than everyone so that's not really fair, " he half-jokes, " never make yourself small to please other people.it doesn't do anyone any favors. you're a fucking rockstar, it's time you start flaunting it " when the ball is coming toward him he swings the paddle perfectly, scoring a point, " yes ! " he cheers a little too loud for a friendly game. denver takes a minute to compose himself before he clears his throat, " none of those guys are worth your time. most of them are entitled pricks who think they can make their way to the top using daddy's credit card." he grumbles. at the mention of oliver his face immediately lights up, " maybe," he says looking around the room, he spots a camera in the corner of the room and sighs, " we're keeping it on the DL for now. too many eyes are dangerous, " he pauses for a moment, denver knows he can't talk about oliver but he's been dying to talk to someone about everything else, " you know… i've never dated anyone before. i'm so fucking lost right now. "

The Navajo Nation has received a $55 million grant to help Navajo homeowners with mortgage payments and home repairs.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said as many as 901 homeowners should qualify for the funds.

The money comes from the American Rescue Plan Act, which provides nearly $10 billion to support homeowners throughout the country who face financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program is open to Navajo homeowners of all income levels within the Four Corner states who live on both tribal lands and in urban areas.

The funds must be used within three years.

PHOENIX — Urban Navajos who own homes off the Navajo Nation will soon receive some unexpected help they’ll want but didn’t need to ask for.

On Sept. 11, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren told 250 Phoenix metro area Navajo homeowners that the Nation received a $55 million federal grant to provide financial assistance to Navajo homeowners under various Homeowner Assistance Fund programs.

This includes mortgage payments and home repair assistance.

As many as 901 Navajo homeowners should qualify for the money for their homes, he said.

“Make sure we tell everybody,” Nygren told an overflow crowd in the shade outside the historic Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center, one of the remaining buildings from the 100-year-old Indian boarding school.

They were outside because a capacity crowd was already indoors awaiting the same announcement, and Nygren wanted to address those in the 105-degree F heat first.

The Homeowner Assistance Fund was authorized through the American Rescue Plan Act to provide $9.9 billion nationwide to support homeowners who face financial hardships associated with COVID-19, the Nygren said yesterday.

The funds were distributed to states, U.S. territories, and tribes. The Navajo Nation was awarded $55,420,097.

Most federally funded programs are restricted to low- and very-low-income households.

This program allows higher-income Navajo homeowners to receive financial relief from the economic effects of COVID-19, as well.

“Tell your relatives,” Nygren said. “Say the $55 million that came from our government was specifically for Navajo people who are homeowners.”

To launch the process, Nygren signed an agreement with Native Community Capital. The group is a Native-led and operated non-profit corporation that was selected as the sub-recipient to administer the Homeowner Assistance Fund Project activities on behalf of the Navajo Nation.

Native Community Capital is certified by the U.S. Department of the Treasury as a Native Community Development Financial Institution and is a licensed mortgage lender in Arizona and New Mexico.

The program is designed for both higher-income and medium-income homeowners, Native Community Capital CFO Todd Francis said.

As an example, a family of four in Maricopa County in Arizona earning as much as $132,450 a year may be eligible for the tax-free, non-repayable funds to pay their mortgage or repair their homes, he said.

The program will benefit Navajo relatives and their families who reside in both rural remote locations and those in the urban areas of Phoenix, Albuquerque, Denver, Salt Lake City, surrounding smaller cities and towns, and wherever Navajo homeowners live off-reservation, said NCC CEO Dave Castillo.

A significant lack of investment in tribal communities compared to non-Indian communities has resulted in a critical absence of homeownership on tribal lands, particularly for higher-income Native households, he said.

As a result, Navajos with higher incomes tend to purchase or build homes off the Navajo Nation where they can qualify for loans and mortgages to build equity and wealth.

The Center for Indian Country Development reports that 78% of Native people live outside of tribal trust land in counties surrounding their homelands. It is these families the HAF Project will seek to support, Castillo said.

Nygren said the Navajo HAF Project will provide financial assistance to 901 eligible Navajo homeowners to use for qualified expenses in five activities for the next 36 months.

The program will provide financial assistance to eligible Navajo homeowners in the four-state region of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.

Each eligible applicant could receive a maximum amount of $125,000 of combined assistance under various programs.

These include:

Monthly mortgage payment assistance to a maximum assistance level of $72,000 per participant. This is for Navajo homeowners who are delinquent in mortgage payments or at risk of foreclosure due to a loss of household income.

Mortgage reinstatement assistance would give a maximum assistance of $50,000 per participant to those who are in active forbearance, delinquency default status, or are at risk of losing a home.

Mortgage principal reduction assistance that would assist up to $100,000 for those who find the fair market value of their home is now less than the price they paid for it and now may result in a loss when it is sold.

Home repair assistance that would give $100,000 to those who need significant home repairs.

Clear title assistance of up to $30,000 for grant assistance to receive a clear title of their primary residence.

In his 2022 presidential campaign, Nygren committed to helping urban Navajos who have said for years that they felt underserved by the tribal government. He said this grant addresses that.

He said one of his administration’s next goals is to buy or construct a building owned by the Navajo Nation in the metro area to serve urban Navajo Phoenicians.

“Wouldn’t it be nice if we used the entire $55 million this year?” Nygren asked. “I know you committed to live here and to take care of your family. I see a lot of familiar faces and I understand this is where your jobs are. We want you to have access to resources.”

Castillo urged applicants to be sure their applications were complete and submitted early.

“One thing we want to emphasize is to be ready when the information is being requested on the checklist,” he said. “Make sure you have your documents prepared and you get it to our licensed professionals that will be working with you. If you do not, the application will expire in 30 days.”

He said the program has just three years to deploy the $55 million.

“It seems like we could do that quickly but we can only do it quickly if you help us, if you’re ready, and if you submit the information that’s necessary.”

Debbie Nez-Manuel, executive director of the Navajo Nation Division of Human Resources, said visits to other urban areas will be planned, scheduled, and announced by Native Community Capital.

The funds must be used within three years.

Descendents, Circle Jerks, and Adolescents on 3/30/24 at Revolution Live in Ft Lauderdale, FL.

The big punk rock legacy tour came through Fort Lauderdale, and I couldn’t miss it (and thank you very much to the man who shall not be named for putting me on the guest list, I really appreciate it).

I hadn’t been to Revolution Live before, but it’s a big, sprawling venue that has an indoor stage and a bigger outdoor stage where the show was tonight. It is sort of half indoors and half outdoors, and it's tiered as well. And yes, the place was packed to the gills!

These days the Adolescents are vocalist Tony and four other guys… Kidding......The four other guys have been in the band for quite some time (guitarist Dan Root has been in the band since 2010, drummer Mike Cambra since 2013, rhythm guitarist Ian Taylor since 2014, and bassist Brad Logan since 2018), and they sounded great. They played a nice mix of old and new cuts. They also played plenty of songs from the blue album and a few other scattered hits here and there. Again they sounded excellent (and the set ending "Kids of the Black Hole" was icing on the cake)!

I had seen the Circle Jerks a couple of years ago when they came through Denver along with 7 Seconds and Negative Approach. It’s basically the same lineup with Keith Morris, Greg Hetson, and Xander Schloss along with Joey Castillo on drums. Like the Adolescents, they played most of their classic first record, Group Sex, and several other must-hear tunes ("Stars and Stripes," "Trapped," "Junk Mail," etc). Keith is always cracking jokes in between songs, but also telling stories about old LA bands that really deserve respect (ie: The Last, The Weirdos, The Crowd, etc). At 28 songs in their set, they really gave the audience their money's worth.

Finally, as the clock struck 10 PM, the Descendents came out. I can’t remember the last time I saw them, but it was sometime within the last decade  They were really on fire on this particular evening. The whole band sounded great! Milo‘s vocals sounded as great n' gravelly as always while the rest of the band: Stephen on guitar, Karl on bass, and the man himself, Bill Stevenson, on drums, all hammered it home from start to finish. They played a righteous mix from all of their records  ("Hope," "Silly Girl," "Coolidge," "Rotting Out," "Clean Sheets," etc). For the 4-song encore, they even brought out "Good Good Things," "Jean Is Dead," "Grudge," and "Get the Time." Again, a superb set! I made it home in one piece and this old man was in bed by midnight! Huzzah!

• Felix is very much a nepo baby, and he doesn’t shy away from the conversation of his privilege, he’s very aware of it and is fine with using it to his full advantage (though he does work hard). His mother is a retired famous catwalk model who still has very big ties in the fashion industry, and his father is a well-known morning talk show host/mainstream presenter. To the outside world they seemingly have the perfect relationship, and either his mother is very good at pretending or she assumes they do too. Felix, however, is very aware that his father is a serial cheater and it has caused a great deal of friction. Mainly because his father is the first to judge him, when he isn’t squeaky clean himself. The eldest of three with two younger sisters, he’s most definitely the family disappointment. He says he doesn’t care, but wouldn’t anyone ?

• Popular in high school, he went on to study both broadcast and sports journalism once he graduated. Upon leaving college he quickly fell into the position of sports reporter for a local sports channel, but after only three and a half years he would be fired after it came to light he was sleeping with his bosses wife. It would be his first scandal, but certainly not his last.

• As his name grew, so did his bad reputation. Partying too much, drug consumption, and branded a home-wrecker for more than just the one affair. Using it to his advantage, he decided to host his own late-night, no filter radio show which seems to be really taking off. And while his name will likely always be tainted, some people have changed their opinion of him. While he no longer officially reports on sport, it is something he is passionate about and often documents on his inst*gram, and it’s definitely something he plans to return to in the future.

• A one night stand with a close friend lead to an unexpected pregnancy, and at the age of twenty-nine Felix became a father far sooner than he’d ever expected. While challenging at first, he fully stepped up and to everyone’s surprise, has his son 50% of the time and shares a great coparenting relationship with the boys mother. It’s helped him become somewhat of a better person, but some habits are harder to kick than others. It can’t be denied that he’s a great father though. But he still likes to have his fun too.

HEADCANNONS

• His parents weren’t present for a good portion of his upbringing, and while he has a closer bond with his mother, they’ve never been a typical family. They seem to want him around more now that he has a child, but he wishes to keep his son away from the toxicity.

• Despite his reputation and habit of saying exactly what he’s thinking on his show, he’s actually very articulate and educated. But he isn’t in any way afraid to stir the pot and go against the expected opinion.

• His son is called Nicholas and is three and is very much in the crazy toddler stage.

• When he doesn’t have his son you can find him driving an expensive sports car, but when he does have him it a sensible vehicle.

WANTED CONNECTIONS

The mother of his child — the most important person in his life other than his child. I imagine them being good friends with a very flirtatious banter before they spent the night together, and now they’re in each others lives for the foreseeable, I could definitely see some feelings growing. Literally a family without being together lol (going to add a wc for this)

The wife of his past boss — while they took part in an affair, overtime there was real care between them. I imagine he’s very much still there for her whenever she needs help with anything, though his romantic feelings are gone now, theirs could still be there. Very open!

Enemy/dislike — did he sleep with their mom, sister, girlfriend ? Or do they just not like him. Open to anything tbh !!

Best friend — give me messy besties please, or someone do opposite to him it shouldn’t work, but it does.

Has anyone ever disarmed a mass shooter before?
