Understanding the Importance of Regular Dental Check-Ups
Regular dental check-ups are often overlooked or postponed, but they are a crucial aspect of maintaining optimal oral health. Beyond just a cleaning, these appointments provide an opportunity for your dentist to assess your oral health, detect any potential issues early, and provide personalized guidance for maintaining a healthy smile. In this blog, we'll delve into the importance of regular dental check-ups and why they should be prioritized as part of your overall healthcare routine.
Preventive Care Saves Teeth and Money: One of the primary reasons for regular dental check-ups is preventive care. By visiting your dentist every six months for a comprehensive examination and professional cleaning, you can address any potential issues before they escalate into more significant problems. Detecting and treating cavities, gum disease, or oral infections early can prevent the need for more extensive and costly interventions down the road, saving both your teeth and your wallet.
Early Detection of Oral Health Issues: Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to identify oral health issues in their early stages when they are easier to treat. For example, cavities caught early can be addressed with simple fillings, whereas untreated cavities can progress to the point of requiring root canal therapy or even extraction. Similarly, early detection of gum disease can prevent irreversible damage to the gums and bone supporting the teeth. By attending regular check-ups, you give yourself the best chance of maintaining a healthy smile for years to come.
Professional Cleaning for a Brighter Smile: In addition to the examination, regular dental check-ups include a professional cleaning performed by a dental hygienist. Even with diligent brushing and flossing at home, plaque and tartar can accumulate in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth, leading to cavities and gum disease. A professional cleaning removes these deposits, leaving your teeth feeling smooth and your smile looking brighter. Plus, your hygienist can offer personalized tips and techniques for improving your at-home oral hygiene routine.
Monitoring Oral Hygiene Habits: Your dental check-up is also an opportunity for your dentist to assess your oral hygiene habits and offer guidance for improvement. They can evaluate your brushing and flossing techniques, recommend products tailored to your needs, and address any concerns or questions you may have about your oral health. By receiving personalized guidance from a dental professional, you can enhance your daily oral hygiene routine and better protect your smile between check-ups.
Building a Relationship with Your Dentist: Beyond the clinical aspect, regular dental check-ups allow you to build a relationship with your dentist based on trust and open communication. Developing a rapport with your dental care team fosters a comfortable and supportive environment where you feel confident discussing your oral health concerns and seeking guidance on preventive care strategies. This partnership empowers you to take an active role in maintaining your oral health and addressing any issues that may arise proactively.
Regular dental check-ups are a cornerstone of preventive healthcare, offering numerous benefits for your oral health and overall well-being. By attending these appointments every six months, you can catch oral health issues early, receive professional cleanings, and receive personalized guidance for maintaining a healthy smile. Don't wait until you experience pain or discomfort—schedule your next dental check-up today and invest in the long-term health of your smile. Your teeth will thank you!

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT APOLLONIA The Patron of Dentists Feast Day: February 9
Ask anybody that has gone through it: there's nothing quite like a toothache. Did you know that dentists and toothaches have a patron saint? Her name was Apollonia.
Apollonia was one of a group of virgin martyrs who suffered in Alexandria during a local uprising against the Christians prior to the persecution of Decius.
According to legend, her torture included having all of her teeth violently pulled out or shattered. The most reliable and contemporary historical account about St Apollonia is from Eusebius' church history. Eusebius records a letter from Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria, written around 249 AD. In it we read that men seized Apollonia because of her Christian faith and 'by repeated blows broke all her teeth.'
Then a woodpile was built and the men threatened to burn her alive if she refused to repeat after them impious words… Given, at her own request, a little freedom, she sprang quickly into the fire and was burned to death.
Because of the nature of the torture she endured rather than deny her faith, St. Apollonia became the special intercessor for those with tooth troubles and, naturally, the patron saint of dentists and those suffering from toothache or other dental problems.
Surely this saint was much called upon for her prayers during medieval days, when the only real solution for an abscessed tooth was to pull it out – without anesthesia!
The Church has quite a sense of humor! Apollonia is honored as the patron saint of dentists, but this woman who had her teeth extracted without anesthetic surely ought to be the patron of those who dread the chair. She might also be the patron of the aging, for she attained glory in her old age, standing firm before her persecutors even as her fellow Christians fled the city. However, we choose to honor her, she remains a model of courage for us.

Sometimes my writing aims to answer meaningful questions people have about the world. Sometimes it aims to answer questions no one has ever asked, such as "why were so many Midwestern Blockbusters converted into dentist's offices," "what if the Blockbuster by my apartment that's sat vacant for nine-odd years isn't really vacant," and "how many tooth infections do vampires get from biting all that unsanitized shit, anyway?"
Also, if you think I'm not going to call this potential short story "What Big Teeth You Have," you clearly don't know me very well.
#writing#alexandria rambles#lol#my post#the tooth infection thing was at least somewhat brought about by me working in a pharmacy#and seeing just how much amoxicillin dentists actually prescribe lol#my personal theory is that with good dental hygiene vampire fangs are more resistant to this shit. emphasis on GOOD dental hygiene.

anyone think Taylor ever cleaned her teeth with her bugs once? maybe she saw a snippet of a documentary about those dentist fish that other fish patiently line up and cause zero trouble in the area, a neutral zone if you will, while they wait for the dentist fish to clean their mouths of parasites and dead flesh and then she decided to try it (because she was inspired by the fish all co-operating together) and almost choked but then she locked in and went "this is easy as fuck. triumph is such a pussy. alexandria was probably faking. this is so normal. I can have as many bugs as I want in my mouth and I'm not gagging" and the other chicago wards never mention it ever because they value their lives.

Nahhh, I wanted to write a one-shot about toothache, dentist and etc., but I give up. It's too long, I can't cut it down nicely, and there's almost no Daryl or conversation with him at all. Fuck it, I can only draw, not write one-shots.
I woke up after 9 a.m. with a slight pain in my upper molar, on the right side at the back. I felt it with my tongue, even though I knew it would do no good. I sighed mentally and went to the bathroom to wash myself.
After my morning bathroom, I went downstairs and started preparing breakfast for the three of us.
I made coffee for my dad and uncle, holding my nose and huffing.
The coffee was disgusting and stank. I didn't know how they could even drink something like that. I made myself t/f tea. I made us omelettes with ham and vegetables.
While I was platting the food, my dad came downstairs.
"Hey darlin'."
He greeted me with a hug and a kiss on the temple. I kissed him back on the forehead.
He looked at the ready breakfast.
"Well well well, breakfast served right at your doorstep? Just like in a hotel."
We both chuckled.
After a while, uncle Merle joined us, looking quite human. Having little access to drugs and alcohol, he was almost always sober. Or it was my presence and charm that kept him from drinking.
I greeted him as well with a hug and a kiss on the nose, and then we ate breakfast. After that I went to brush my teeth, the pain was slight but dull - it was still there.
In the afternoon I was busy helping to repair the Alexandria wall after a tree had fallen on it, ruining it. People sawed it into smaller pieces so they could remove it. I helped as much as could, but still couldn't get rid of the molar pain, which was not only bothersome, but intensified by now.
In the evening, when I came home, Merle and Daryl were sitting on the couch in the living room, together.
I took off my shoes, cap and glasses, washed hands, clenching my jaw from time to time, pressing onto the aching tooth, which at least eliminated the dull pain.
Before going to bed, I brushed my teeth, thoroughly scrubbing the painful one in my back, although I knew it was too late for such treatments. I knew that sooner or later it would have to be drilled, which made me anxious. I was always afraid of the dentist, or rather the pain they caused by drilling into my teeth. I didn't brush them much when I was a kid. Let's be honest, who did? I took half a pill of the painkiller and went to sleep. I took 3 whole painkillers during the week, but I knew I couldn't hide it any longer.
.
.
.
Jeez, why it has to be this shitty and bad, I truly hate it. Helo me please 😩😩😩😩😩😭
You can fix it by re-writing it and giving an "y/n", but keep the topic of toothache, future dentist visits and tag me on it. Cheers!
@celtic-crossbow @dixonzzgirl @deansapplepie Please help? You're so great at this guys 😩🙏🏼

@jomiddlemarch requested a perspective flip of "Physician, Heal Thyself - Or, Our New England Cousin: Being An Unpublished Excerpt From the Lives of the Staff and Volunteers of Mansion House Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia, in the late War" - this is not the perspective flip requested, because I have the reading comprehension of a bear (perhaps even one hopped up on cocaine), but:
A monster then, a dream (G, Mercy Street, ~800 words, Jed Foster/Mary Phinney, no real warnings except for vampirism/slapdash crossover with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, I guess?)
In which Mary Phinney has pointed questions for Jed Foster,
or,
The dentist’s apprentice was whistling tunelessly down the great hall of Mansion House in the slanting afternoon light; the haphazard arrangements of the ailing and the dying did not seem to impede his progress much, for all he barely seemed to look. His box of tools was missing, Jed Foster realized, belatedly – there was something strange in the way he moved as a result. Perhaps. Jed shook his head, as though to shake loose something stuck in the cotton wool of withdrawal and blood-lust and exhaustion, but nothing came to him: it was still the waning summer of 1862, and the great crimes of a guilty nation – to quote a man he had no business quoting, except that it would please Mary Phinney – were being washed out by a tide of blood.
Some part of him hoped Adam and his whole brood of the damned would choke on it. Jed, as alive to the irony as any of the walking dead could be, certainly was – choking, he meant.
But all this was ignoring the head nurse, who was busy about her tasks beside him. It was poor coin to pay her for his parole with (and the half-second’s pull of his whole being towards the thud of her pulse in her neck, worse still!) and so he put it all out of his mind, save her and her causes and her counsel: “There is something wrong with that man,” he said.
Read the Rest on AO3!

DR. ROSALIE FOUGELBERG // DENTIST
“She is known as Sweden's first female dentist after the profession was opened to women. In 1861, the dentist profession was legally opened to women. Fougelberg tried twice to get her dentist's certificate; the second time, she was approved by the medical examiners but not by the dentistry representative. During her third try in 1866, the examination was supervised by the press. She was still turned down by the Collegium Medicum, but given a royal dispensation by the monarch, Charles XV of Sweden. She was thereby the first woman dentist since the profession was opened for women. Fougelberg was the personal dentist of the Queen, Louise of the Netherlands from 1867 to 1871, and was later active in Stockholm (1867–79) and Västergötland (1883–1893). She married the sea captain and missionary Torell and emigrated to Alexandria in Egypt.”
