Joseph had long wondered how long he could go without brushing his teeth, unbeknownst to him he would soon find out in a “routine” visit to a new dental clinic in his town after his previous one had closed down some years prior, they didn’t look horrendous- to him- of course most others opinions would vary from bad to worse. as it happened his appointment was scheduled to be the last of the day- this was because they knew of his attempting to avoid brushing as long as possible. The time finally came for him to go over, the building it was in was very nice, new, sterile feeling as many doctors offices are- part of the reason he picked this facility was their offering general anesthesia for dental phobia patients among other things he was not a fan of dental work done to him. He walked up to the door opened it and was greeted by Suzie the busty brunette receptionist wearing pastel blue scrubs and a scrub cap

I sat down in one of the tiny chairs and picked up an old magazine to flip through and before long they came for him.

Then Dr Wheeler came back this time with 2 scrubbed-in figures in tow, they were wearing pale green gowns, blue, full head hoods and white tie-on surgical masks. you could tell they were women, busty at that.

“oohhh, is it time?”

I make myself still on the table, arms on the armrests, as one grabs a wipe and wipes his arm, before sticking a needle in and attaching a bag of saline to the new port in the crook of my elbow.

Then the other one grabs a big fluffy blanket and puts it over me , securing straps over my torso down to my feet.

“We don’t want you falling out now, do we?” Wheeler says, now dressed similarly to her helpers in a green gown, white mask and dark purple gloves

time to sleep you hear as a scrubbed figure places a mask over your face, at first it tastes normal but quickly you feel the flow change and become more chemical smelling, we’re just giving you some nitrous now, as she loads a syringe into your port filled with a strange white liquid

she was right and soon in addition the back of your throat tasted a bit coppery, before long your vision began to blur as well.

the mask was renoved from your face then the restraints on your lower body loosened before your legs were moved into the frog pose and your groin shaved and wiped with warm water then painted with betadine followed by a syringe of sterile lubricant injected into your urethra and a catheter placed before the blanket and restraints were replaced.

While that was happening a nasotracheal tube was being introduced into your right nostril, and attached to the ventilator to keep you under and a ring mouth-gag sewn in place simultaneously, before a tube of opthalmic ointment was squirted over each of your corneas and they were sealed with surgical dressings then green towels were placed around your mouth and secured around the tube to keep it in place followed by the mayo stand being wheeled to hang over your insensate body and your chair was raised to just over 4ft off the ground before one of the assistant’s began painting the lower portion of your face with antiseptic, then placed a throat pack with the surgical clamps.

Now it was time to work, Dr Grace Wheeler made quick work of your full clearance, removing each tooth individually before leveling the bone along your gumline with the piezoelectric grinder and sewing your new gums shut, who knows you might just learn a thing or two from being toothless now

I am 43 — aside from a few cavities that were filled & impacted wisdom teeth removed at 19 — I have never had any other work done.

My dentist dismissed my concerns, briefly pointed towards my Xray, said that a previous cavity I had filled was approaching the nerve.

No, I dont think so — I have already stopped taking prescription medication for arthritis and instead use CBD cream, heat pads, yoga, walking.

I self regulate my emotions through shadow work, somatic work, subconscious work, breathwork, energy work, reiki, movement, journalling, art, being in nature, etc.

I dont take any OTC medications but sometimes have debilitating pressure headaches that cause sensitivity to light & noise & sinus pain. I turn off all lights, I always have a completely silent environment during the day all week inside my apartment, I get off my phone & Macbook, I go for a walk, spend time in nature, do yoga, make herbal tea, drink water.

If I feel like I have a cold, I take organic cough drops, eat hot broth, rest, walk outside, herbal tea, lots of water. I dont take any OTC medication.

When my period cramps & lower back hurt, I drink tea & water & use heat packs. I dont take OTC medication.

I questioned why my teeth would be any different and was pleasantly surprised to see that holistic dentists exist that shared my disgust over root canals and the state of dentistry and the rest of the western medical industrial complex.

I found an Usui reiki master, holistic dentist with her PhD from Rutgers who is also a tarot card reader that focused on minimizing sugar intake & dietary changes - diet & lifestyle, brushing flossing mouth guards if grinding is an issue pulling oil - maintaining dental health as well as regular check ups - preventative proactiveness.

She also utilizes 3D cone xrays, not limited 2D & does alternative treatments like oxidization and her stated goal on her website is for patients to realize they have the power to heal themselves and she only assists when absolutely medically necessary and takes a minimal approach to any kind of interventions.

The opposite of “modern dentistry” and the modern medical industrial complex that feeds itself off of pain, misery, lies & death.

Weeks later, she was still unable to chew or close her mouth all the way after root canal & crown placement. She wore a splint for two weeks, absolutely zero relief. She is unable to bite down or close her mouth all the way without debilitating agonizing pain.

For two months! She has been unable to chew food on the left side or close her mouth all the way.

Dentist ordered Xrays & there are zero signs of infection — she is STILL being told to do yet ANOTHER root canal!

I recently had a conversation with a family member about elective surgeries; the idea of voluntarily going under a knife to change your body, some times right down to how it fundamentally exists in the world. I for one believe that each and every single adult of sound mind should be able and encouraged to make any and all alterations to there body that they want with out exception. And I mean that. ALL ALTERATIONS. If a cis-guy who 100% identifies as a guy wants breast implants then it should be just as accepted and normal as a cis-woman getting implants. If there's an artist who realizes that they could create art better/easier if they could position there hand just so then they should be able to elect to have a finger or two removed or reshaped. Tattoos, Implants, Amputation, Bone Shaving; I truly and honestly think that the ability to craft ones body the way they want it should be no-holds-barred.

Even among people who are into tattoos and body mods, this is often seen as an extreme take. Why would you be okay with some one cutting off a perfectly healthy body part? How could you say that some one who wants to change there body like that is of sound mind?

Two reasones

If there is one thing in this world that must remain absolute, it is bodily autonomy. If you do not have ownership of that which only effects yourself then you have nothing. I am not talking about individuals who are suffering from a delusion and who would deeply regret these choices once they get help; nor am I talking about some one who it not capable of understanding the pros and CONS to this decision. This is about the vast majority of people. People for whom no one but themselves can say how their life is meant to be. I do not live your life, so who am i to tell you that you don't know how you feel and what you want.

(and this is a odder opinion of mine) That change and creativity in every thing, even the way our bodies look and work, is so fundamentally human. Not a single change I'm talking about has come to us "naturally". Even something as simple as changing our hair color is something that arguably humans are not "supposed" to be able to do. There are a number of species that can change things about themselves almost at will. From octopi that can change there skin color/pattern at will to the goby (Lythrypnus pulchellus) that flexes from one sex to another. Yet as a species we decided that even mother nature could not tell us what we can and cant do. In every culture and every time, we have found ways to change how we look in ways that we shouldn't be able to. We don't just sit down and accept that "this is how life is meant to be". We find ways to bend realty to our desire and I think that's pretty fucking awesome. Over and over again, in all of recorded history we have looked to things that, from all previous experience, we should of learned were imposable. Yet just about every time we say "to hell with possibility we want to do this so we are going to find a way". We don't have wings but we figured out how to fly; we don't have gills but we found ways to spend days at a time deep under water. You can argue all you want that inventing the airplane or putting a man on the moon aren't comparable but it all comes from the same place. The deep and unending human need to push ourselves to extremes. To find a way to experience every little thing in this world regardless of whether or not we are "supposed" to be able to. That is something to celebrate and embrace. We as a species have never been good at being told No; I'm not denying that there have been some pretty awful things to come out of that but even more so, it means we have carved out a place in the world and are working to make it look just how we want. Why shouldn't we give the same freedom and exploration to our own bodies?
