Early Detection Saves Lives: VELscope Oral Cancer Screening at East Madison Dental, Dumont, NJ

When it comes to oral cancer, early detection is crucial. Without proper screening, a person may have oral cancer and not even know it until it reaches an advanced stage. At East Madison Dental in Dumont, NJ, Dr. Mary Kiledjian, DMD, and her team utilize the VELscope Oral Cancer Screening System—an advanced diagnostic tool designed to detect abnormal tissue changes before they become serious concerns.
Why Is Early Detection So Important?

Oral cancer can develop silently, often without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Unfortunately, by the time visible signs appear, the disease may already have progressed significantly. Studies show that when oral cancer is detected and treated early, the five-year survival rate increases by 80-90%. This is why routine screenings play a crucial role in maintaining oral health and saving lives.
How Does the VELscope Oral Cancer Screening System Work?
The VELscope system is a cutting-edge, non-invasive tool that enhances the ability of dental professionals to detect abnormal tissue changes inside the mouth. The screening process is quick, painless, and highly effective. Here’s how it works:
Specialized White Light Source & Viewing Scope – The dentist uses a high-energy blue light that allows them to examine the tissues in the mouth more closely.
Identification of Abnormal Tissue – Under the special light, healthy tissues appear bright, while abnormal tissues may appear darker, helping dentists pinpoint areas of concern.
Further Examination & Follow-up – If abnormal tissue is detected, it doesn’t necessarily mean cancer is present. Dr. Kiledjian may recommend a follow-up visit to reassess the area. In some cases, a gentle, non-invasive brush biopsy may be performed to determine if further action is needed.
Who Should Get an Oral Cancer Screening?
While oral cancer can affect anyone, certain risk factors increase the likelihood of developing the disease. You may be at a higher risk if you:
Use tobacco products (smoking, chewing tobacco, etc.)
Consume alcohol regularly
Have a history of HPV (human papillomavirus) infection
Have a family history of oral cancer
Experience prolonged exposure to the sun (which increases the risk of lip cancer)
Are over the age of 40
Even if you don’t have any risk factors, routine screenings are essential. Oral cancer can occur in anyone, and early detection is key to successful treatment.
Get Screened Today at East Madison Dental

At East Madison Dental, Dr. Mary Kiledjian, DMD, and her team are dedicated to providing top-tier preventive care, including advanced oral cancer screening. The VELscope Oral Cancer Screening System is just one of the many ways they ensure their patients receive the best possible care.

Toothpaste Truths: Separating Fact from Fiction by Dr. Jeffrey Henneberg - Smile Source Spokane - Valley

Toothpaste is an essential part of our daily routine, but do we really know the truth about it? Over time, several misconceptions have spread, leading people to believe things that aren’t entirely accurate. Dr. Jeffrey Henneberg of Smile Source Spokane - Valley is here to clear up some of the most common misunderstandings about toothpaste and help you make better choices for your oral health.

Misconception 1: More Toothpaste Means Cleaner Teeth
Ever seen a toothpaste commercial where they cover the entire brush with toothpaste? In reality, you don’t need that much! The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a pea-sized amount for adults and just a rice-sized smear for children under three. Using too much can lead to excessive foam, making it harder to brush properly.
Misconception 2: Whitening Toothpaste Works Like Magic
Many people expect whitening toothpaste to magically transform their teeth overnight. While these toothpastes help remove surface stains, they don’t change the natural color of your teeth instantly. The best results come from long-term use combined with good oral hygiene and professional cleanings.

Misconception 3: Natural Toothpaste is Always the Best Choice
Natural products are great, but not all natural toothpaste options contain fluoride, which is crucial for cavity prevention. If you’re considering switching to natural toothpaste, make sure to check the ingredients and consult your dentist to ensure it meets your oral health needs.
Misconception 4: Fluoride Toothpaste is Unnecessary if Your Water is Fluoridated
Fluoride in drinking water does help protect teeth, but it’s not a substitute for fluoride toothpaste. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste adds an extra layer of protection, helping to remineralize enamel and prevent cavities.
Misconception 5: Expired Toothpaste Still Works Fine
Toothpaste has an expiration date for a reason! Over time, fluoride loses its effectiveness, and the texture may change. Using expired toothpaste may not give your teeth the protection they need, so it’s best to replace it when it expires.

Misconception 6: Foam Equals Effectiveness
Many people think the foamier the toothpaste, the better it cleans. But that’s not true! Foam is created by detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and while it might feel satisfying, it doesn’t actually make the toothpaste more effective. Some great toothpaste options, especially those for sensitive teeth, produce little to no foam but still do an excellent job of cleaning and protecting your teeth.
The Bottom Line
"At Smile Source Spokane - Valley, we believe that patient education is key to achieving optimal oral health,” says Dr. Jeffrey Henneberg. “Understanding the facts about toothpaste can help people make informed choices and maintain healthier smiles."
By debunking these misunderstandings, you can make better decisions for your dental health. If you’re unsure about which toothpaste is best for you, consult your dentist for personalized recommendations.

Trending Benefits of Sedation Dentistry for Napa Valley Residents
Dental anxiety often hinders individuals from essential oral care, but sedation dentistry is transforming this experience. Beyond conventional methods, we explore six benefits of how sedation dentistry eases anxiety, specifically focusing on how Napa Valley patients can benefit at Napa Valley Dental Group.

Anxiety Reduction: One of the primary benefits of sedation dentistry is its ability to significantly reduce anxiety levels. By administering sedatives, patients experience a profound sense of calmness, making it easier to undergo dental procedures without the associated stress and worry.
Pain Management: Sedation dentistry ensures that patients experience minimal discomfort during dental treatments. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who fear pain or have had past traumatic dental experiences. The use of sedatives helps create a more pain-free and relaxed environment.
Enhanced Comfort and Relaxation: Sedatives not only alleviate anxiety but also promote muscle relaxation, contributing to enhanced comfort during dental procedures. Patients often report feeling more at ease, allowing for a more pleasant overall experience.
Time Perception Alteration: Sedation dentistry can distort time perception, making procedures seem shorter than they actually are. This not only helps patients endure longer treatments but also contributes to an overall positive experience by creating a sense of time passing quickly.
Memory Suppression: For those with past traumatic dental experiences, sedation dentistry can induce partial or complete memory suppression of the procedure. This prevents the reinforcement of negative associations, making future dental visits less daunting.
Increased Cooperation for Special Needs Patients: Sedation dentistry is particularly valuable for individuals with special needs or those who struggle with cooperation during dental treatments. By inducing relaxation, sedation ensures that everyone, regardless of their unique requirements, can receive the dental care they need.
Redefining oral care, this approach ensures comfort and tranquility for those seeking optimal dental health in Napa Valley.

Conquering Dental Fear: How Sedation Dentistry Can Help
For many individuals, visiting the dentist can be a source of intense fear and anxiety. Dental phobia can prevent people from seeking the necessary oral care, leading to neglected dental health and worsening oral conditions. However, there is a solution that can help individuals conquer their dental fear: sedation dentistry. In this blog post, we will explore how sedation dentistry can provide a comfortable and stress-free dental experience, enabling individuals to overcome their dental fears and receive the essential dental care they need.

Understanding Dental Fear and Anxiety:
Dental fear and anxiety are common and can stem from various factors, such as previous traumatic dental experiences, fear of pain, or feelings of vulnerability. These fears can lead to avoidance of dental appointments, resulting in deteriorating oral health and the need for more extensive dental treatments in the future. Sedation dentistry offers a viable solution to break this cycle by providing a relaxed and anxiety-free environment for dental procedures.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of sedatives to help patients relax and remain calm during dental procedures. The level of sedation can range from mild relaxation to a deeper state of sedation, depending on the patient's needs and the complexity of the procedure. Sedation dentistry techniques are administered by qualified dental professionals who carefully monitor the patient's vital signs throughout the process.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry:
Anxiety Reduction: Sedation dentistry helps alleviate anxiety and fear associated with dental visits. Patients can feel more at ease and comfortable, allowing them to undergo necessary treatments without distress.
Pain Management: Sedation dentistry can be combined with local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience during dental procedures. Patients can undergo treatments without feeling discomfort or pain.
Time Efficiency: Sedation dentistry enables dentists to perform multiple procedures in one session, as patients remain relaxed and cooperative throughout the process. This saves time and reduces the need for multiple dental appointments.
Improved Treatment Compliance: By eliminating the fear and anxiety associated with dental visits, sedation dentistry encourages patients to maintain regular dental appointments, leading to better oral health outcomes in the long run.
Enhanced Comfort: Sedation dentistry provides a comfortable experience for patients, reducing muscle tension and promoting relaxation. Patients often have little to no recollection of the procedure afterward.
Types of Sedation Dentistry:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A mild form of sedation, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask, inducing a relaxed and euphoric state. It wears off quickly after the procedure.
Oral Sedation: This involves taking a prescribed sedative pill before the dental appointment, which produces a calming effect. The patient remains conscious but deeply relaxed throughout the procedure.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation: Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation induces a deeper level of sedation. It is typically reserved for more complex or lengthy dental procedures.
Conclusion:
Sedation dentistry offers a lifeline for those struggling with dental fear and anxiety. By providing a calm and stress-free experience, it allows individuals to overcome their fears and receive the essential dental care they deserve. If dental fear has been holding you back from seeking treatment, consider consulting a sedation dentist in Loxahatchee. Their expertise and dedication to patient comfort will ensure a positive and anxiety-free dental experience, paving the way for optimal oral health. Don't let fear stand in the way of your dental well-being—explore the benefits of sedation dentistry and take control of your dental health today.

Braindump:
I just keep thinking about the implications of the door factory interview - work done when you're severed doesn't translate into useful work experience for YOU. YOU didn't learn anything at that office job. YOU were basically unemployed, and your job holds all your experience captive and doesn't have to share its training investment with any other employer. It traps you at a job even more than our current healthcare-as-benefit does!
Likewise, hard experiences in life are important for building yourself as a person! NOT HAVING THOSE will stop your growth as a person! Not feeling the consequences of a bad dentist visit will not help you practice better dental hygiene, not being able to tell the dentist that it hurts when you have ice cream (because you've never had ice cream) will NOT help the dentist help you better. Both innie and outie suffer. I've had sedation (roofie style) dentistry done to me where afterwards I didn't remember a single thing, but I still had ALL the anxiety before the visit. I still lived through the discomfort and then effectively ERASED the me that lived through it. I remember going in and I remember coming out and trying to pay, but I had already paid. It was trippy as fuck and I'm a little scared of how effective it was - and that wasn't even a severance chip!
A world where you cut out all your fears and anxieties isn't going to get rid of your anxieties, they will only adjust, Overton-Window-style, to cover different parts of your life. And you'll find other fears to explore. I imagine risk-taking behaviour increases in severed people as they try to feel something that has been cut out of them. To make themselves whole in the fraction that remains.
Why are we living, if it's not to LIVE?
*edit to add that this doesn't mean I think all trauma is good and you should be forced to grow around it and remember it! There's lots of nuance, even in the show, but my god they just wanna cut every single minor inconvenience don't they?!
no dentist's office. no writing christmas cards. no taking flights. a world where every pain or minor annoyance is dismissed as your consciousness is replaced with a different version of you. a life without pain, or agitation, or monotony. and conversely, a life full of only that for every version of you who experiences the chores you wished to evade.
forget skipping work or school or birth. try everything. never experience anything that expires a negative emotion. the ideal consciousness sold as a product for the price of a version of you that you'll never meet.
but it doesn't matter. you carry the hurt down with you. in your hands, in your mind, your mouth. the grief mark experiences carried into his innie, gemma feeling the pain she experienced in the rooms even after she's been severed.
it doesn't matter. you carry it with you.

Dental Implants vs. Dentures: Which Tooth Replacement Option is Right for You?
Introduction
Losing a tooth is more than just a cosmetic issue—it can impact your ability to chew, speak, and maintain jawbone health. If you’re considering tooth replacement, you’ve likely come across two popular options: dental implants and dentures. But which one is the best fit for your lifestyle and needs?
At Warwick Lodge Dental, we understand that every patient is different, and choosing the right solution is crucial for long-term comfort, function, and confidence. In this guide, we’ll explore the differences, benefits, and drawbacks of dental implants and dentures to help you make an informed decision.
Understanding Dental Implants
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are permanent tooth replacements that involve a titanium post surgically placed in the jawbone, acting as an artificial root. Once healed, a custom-made crown is attached, creating a natural-looking and fully functional tooth.
Benefits of Dental Implants:
Mimic Natural Teeth – Look, feel, and function like real teeth.
Long-Term Solution – Can last 25+ years with proper care.
Prevent Bone Loss – Stimulates the jawbone, preventing deterioration.
No Slipping or Discomfort – Fixed securely in place.
No Impact on Nearby Teeth – Unlike dental bridges, implants don’t rely on adjacent teeth for support.
Potential Drawbacks of Dental Implants:
Higher Initial Cost – But more cost-effective over time due to longevity.
Surgical Procedure Required – Some patients may need bone grafting if their jawbone is too weak.
Longer Healing Time – The implant needs 3-6 months to integrate with the bone.
Understanding Dentures
What Are Dentures? Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth that replace multiple missing teeth. They can be:
🔹 Full Dentures – Replace all teeth in an arch (upper or lower). 🔹 Partial Dentures – Fill gaps between remaining natural teeth.
Benefits of Dentures:
Affordable Option – Lower upfront cost compared to implants.
Non-Surgical – No invasive procedures required.
Custom-Made for Comfort – Designed to fit your mouth for better functionality.
Quick Turnaround – Can be fitted in a few weeks.
Potential Drawbacks of Dentures:
Less Stability – May shift or slip while eating or talking.
Require More Maintenance – Need to be removed, cleaned, and soaked daily.
Jawbone Shrinkage – Since they don’t stimulate the jawbone like implants, bone loss can occur over time.
Replacement Needed – Typically last 5-7 years before needing adjustments or replacement.
Which Option Is Best for You?FactorDental ImplantsDenturesCostHigher upfront costMore affordableDurabilityCan last a lifetimeNeeds replacement every 5-7 yearsComfort & FitFeels like natural teethCan slip or cause discomfortMaintenanceBrushing & flossing like real teethRequires daily cleaning & adhesive useJawbone HealthPrevents bone lossNo bone stimulation; may cause jaw shrinkage over time
Final Thoughts: Which Should You Choose?
Choose Dental Implants if you want a permanent, natural-looking, and stable solution.
Choose Dentures if you prefer a more affordable, non-surgical option.
At Warwick Lodge Dental, we specialize in both dental implants and dentures, our dental experts at Warwick Lodge Dental can help you decide based on your oral health, budget, and lifestyle. Book a consultation today and let us help you restore your smile with the best solution for you!
