First Music Release Story with Photo Facts: From iPad Experiments to Timeless Sound

Here’s a throwback that both music lovers and fellow artists will enjoy – the story of a very first music release by Dennis Kaye.

"So, it all began back in 2011. I had an iPad and loved experimenting with gadgets, so I picked up the Alesis iO Dock. It was a perfect setup – almost like a mini-studio. I recorded drums, guitars, and layered tracks right on my iPad. Most of my best work came together this way.

At that time, I was heavily into #Alternative, #NuMetal, #PostHardcore, and #PostRock. Inspired by the latter, I had a wild urge to write an 8-minute post-rock track – a trend back then. I spent countless hours recording live guitars, programming drums, and editing on repeat. The result? A monumental track with an epic guitar solo – maybe too metal in spirit, but still driven by post-hardcore rhythms. It wasn’t exactly my usual taste, but it was my creation! Looking back now, I can’t imagine having the time or patience to craft a song like that, but it taught me so much about true, deep creativity.

Despite being raw and a bit rough, this track connected with people. Over the years, without any big promotion, it found its way into playlists, got picked up for soundtracks, and still brings me new listeners. Even with its old-school sound, the track has stood the test of time. I believe it’s because, unlike today’s polished and overproduced music, it feels raw, authentic, and genuine. It’s that kind of music that builds emotional connections and lives on – over a decade now – while so many other artists come and go.

Now, after all these years, I’m excited to ride this familiar wave again, instead of fighting against the current. And as a bonus, the post-rock single comes with two electronic remixes made in 2016 – something for the #Beatport crowd as well! The Damned, Lenny Kaye & Friends, and The Dictators at Hammerstein Ballroom

On Friday, May 31, 2024, English punk band The Damned returned to NYC for a performance at Hammerstein Ballroom with their 80’s lineup, billed as “the songs you want to hear by the people you want to play them.” Rat Scabies, Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, and Paul Gray (plus Monty Oxymoron) were joined by Lenny Kaye & Friends (celebrating the 52nd anniversary of Nuggets) and The Dictators for opening sets.

Today's art/literary history lesson is on: Aubrey Beardsley

Beardsley's illustration forms the background for A Power Unbound, which is a cool moment of historical connection and intertextuality

Aubrey Beardsley was a turn-of-the-century artist who was part of the Aesthetic/Decadent movements that challenged Victorian social norms in art and literature. Queerness and eroticism were significant components of these movements, which often incorporated sensation, transgression, and sexuality.

Beardsley's art was considered provocative for its use of the grotesque, the sexual, and the androgynous. (Notably, he drove his editors bonkers by always hiding dicks and other phallic silhouettes in his art.)

Beardsley was the art editor for The Yellow Book, a literary journal printed in the 1890s. It was so named because of its intentionally garish yellow cover, which was meant to mimic the style of lewd French texts.

However, Beardsley is probably best remembered today for his illustrations that accompanied Oscar Wilde's controversial play Salomé. Although Wilde himself was not involved with The Yellow Book, his association with Beardsley through Salomé was so well known that The Yellow Book forced Beardsley out of his position as art editor following Wilde's trial; The Yellow Book did not last much longer after that. Aestheticism overall suffered in the wake of Wilde's trial specifically because of its association with Wilde and queer, transgressive artists.

But, given Beardsley's artistic ethos and the inextricable queerness of those movements as a whole, Beardsley's Decadent art is a fitting choice for the cover of A Power Unbound—which is itself a celebration of unapologetically queer and sexual art (and features its own lewd publications with notably colored covers 😉).

In 1973, while the future CBGB was still Hilly's, two locals—Bill Page and Rusty McKenna—convinced Kristal to let them book concerts. In February 1974, Hilly booked local band Squeeze to a residency, playing Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the club's change from country and bluegrass to original rock bands. Squeeze was led by guitarist Mark Suall, later with CBGB's quasi house band the Revelons, which included Fred Smith of Television and JD Daugherty of the Patti Smith Group. Although these bands did not play punk rock, they helped lay its foundation. The August 1973 collapse of the Mercer Arts Center left unsigned bands little option in New York City to play original music. Mercer refugees—including Suicide, The Fast, Ruby and the Rednecks, Wayne County, and the Magic Tramps—soon played at CBGB.

In 1974, on April 14, in the audience of Television's third gig were Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye, whose Patti Smith Group debuted at CBGB on February 14, 1975. Other early performers included the Dina Regine Band. Dennis Lepri was lead guitarist as well as the Stillettoes which included Deborah Harry on vocals. The newly formed band Angel and the Snake, later renamed Blondie, as well as the Ramones arrived in August 1974. Mink DeVille, Talking Heads, the Shirts, the Heartbreakers, the Fleshtones and other bands soon followed. In April 1977, The Damned played the club, marking the first time a British punk band had ever played in America.

CBGB's two rules were that a band must move its own equipment and play mostly original songs—that is, no cover bands—although regular bands often played one or two covers in set. CBGB's growing reputation drew more and more acts from outside New York City. In 1978, new wave songwriter Elvis Costello would open shows for The Voidoids, while The Police played at CBGB for their first American gigs. Meanwhile, CBGB became famed for the Misfits, Television, Patti Smith Group, Mink DeVille, the Dead Boys, the Dictators, the Fleshtones, the Voidoids, the Cramps, the B-52's, Blondie, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, the Shirts, and Talking Heads. Yet in the 1980s, hardcore punk's New York underground was CBGB's mainstay. Named "thrash day" in a documentary on hardcore, Sunday at CBGB was matinée day, which became an institution, played from afternoon until evening by hardcore bands such as Reagan Youth, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law, Cro-Mags, Leeway, Warzone, Gorilla Biscuits, Sick of It All, The Misfits, Sheer Terror, Stillborn and Youth of Today. In 1990, violence inside and outside of the venue prompted Kristal to suspend hardcore bookings, although CBGB brought hardcore back at times. CBGB's last several years had no formal bans by genre.

224: Hedge & Donna Capers // Special Circumstances

I recently found this record on the street in Portland, Maine and I have to admit to rescuing it purely because I’d never seen a mixed-race ‘60s folk duo before. Special Circumstances is a lot better than I’d expected from a discarded folk-pop record—one mafia-related disappearance or Glenn Frey connection away from a Light in the Attic reissue, say. (We do get Bernie Leadon playing a bit of dobro, which is in the vicinity.) The husband-and-wife duo of Keene Hedges Capers and Donna Capers (née Carson) harmonize as smoothly as you could wish, and the instrumental credits are littered with session studs, including Flying Burrito Brother and pedal steel legend Sneaky Pete Kleinow and Carole Kaye on bass. Janis Ian also drops in to lend piano to Hedge & Donna’s rendition of her treacly number “He’s a Rainbow.”

The pop-leaning tunes (like “Rainbow” and “Sunshine”) aren’t the best use of anyone’s talents but they’re not especially grating,  and the album’s late pivot to gospel is more pleasant than enervating, but Special Circumstances punches its ticket with a run of sublime ballads on the a-side. Most of these songs are Capers originals, but their quality is really a testament to the pros who can make even pedestrian songwriting sound like the relieving warmth that radiates from a good stretch. On “Becoming” the players cup Hedge and Donna’s close harmonies and spiritual sweet nothings like a flower holding a pair of drowsing field mice. The soul jazz-tinted medley that follows (“Higher Country / Uhuru / Adunde”) is more ambitious, Donna’s lead vocal landing somewhere between Sandy Denny and Miriam Makeba as the mystical, minor key “Higher Country” dissolves into a series of African chants. The lazy stream from the title track to “Strawberry Malt” features some of the prettiest country-folk backing you’ll hear on any record from 1970. I’d happily stick these four songs up against nearly anything I’ve heard from the recent glut of b- and c-tier folk reissues.

Overall, Special Circumstances gets a pass from me for its becoming lack of overt commercial ambitions, and the easy craftsmanship nearly every part of it displays. It’s not perfect, but to my surprise it’s managed to grab my ear despite coming home amid a pile of records I actually paid for, even if I’ll probably seldom play the second side again.
