A Beast, A Man

Summary: Kuwabara is alone with a beast, he's trying to convince is a man. (Can be taken as Kuwameshi.) (Abou 1k)

Kuwabara choked as the breath was knocked out of him from the force of the tackle that sent him and Yusuke spiraling through the brush. Yusuke normally could knock the hell out of him, but this time was different. This time, Yusuke’s strength was primal and raw, and dangerous in a way Kuwabara felt like he might not come back from. And underneath all that raw raging power, was fear.

“Yusuke!” Kuwabara choked, hand digging into long black hair, and tugging. “Yusuke! It’s me! Kuwabara! Easy man! Easy! Urameshi! I’m not gonna hurt you!”

The real question, the one Kuwabara was avoiding thinking about, was whether Yusuke would hurt him or not.

Knowing he couldn’t not put some power into it, Kuwabara used all his strength to wrench Yusuke back by his hair and rolled the demon onto his back. With his Reiki crackling around him like lightning, Kuwabara grabbed Yusuke’s wrists and pinned him down to the forest floor beneath his back. Yusuke panted and raged at first, but Kuwabara would let Yusuke lift himself up halfway off the ground, only to slam him back into the ground. He did this three times more before Yusuke went still, panting and staring at Kuwabara with wild eyes.

He growled like some large predatory cat, and Kuwabara growled back.

Yusuke went utterly still after this, and Kuwabara knew it was because he’d caught the other off guard. 

Taking advantage of Yusuke’s shock, Kuwabara pleaded, “Yusuke! It’s me! It’s Kuwabara! Don’t you recognize me?!”

With Yusuke staying relatively still, Kuwabara could get a good look at his best friend, and in turn, Yusuke could look at him.

Yusuke’s hair had grown wild and free, down past his knees. His eyes were unfocused and wild, angry and threatening as they looked back at Kuwabara. His Mazouko markings were out, something Kuwabara was only used to seeing when Yusuke was going all out in a match. But instead of their usual dark pigment, they were a deep bright red, red as blood.

“Urameshi… what happened to you? Are you alright?” Kuwabara asked. He pressed his thumb into the cheek of Yusuke, pressing into one of Yusuke's patterned marks. It was warm, almost feverish. "Oh man, Oh man, something's wrong isn't it?"

Yusuke was staring at him as if he’d never seen him before. At Kuwabara's touch, he flinched, and squinted at Kuwabara, regarding him with confusion. There was something like recognition in his eyes, or at least the acknowledgment that he thought he should recognize Kuwabara.

“Uramehsi… don’t you recognize me?” Kuwabara asked, his heart in his throat as his stomach churned uncomfortably. 

His grip slackened around Yusuke, and that was the mistake.

The small edge he’d given himself was lost as Yusuke flipped Kuwabara on his back, and pinned his legs down with his thighs, growling like a beast into his face, the strong grip bearing down on him bone breaking. Kuwabara tried to get his hands free, knowing that if he could at least have that, he might be able to stop Yusuke before he did something he might regret. But Yusuke caught Kuwabara's hands up in his grasp, and the angered demon squeezed Kuwabara’s wrists tight, Kuwabara's bones grinding together painfully.

Kuwabara fought to keep his eyes open against the pain, and groaned, " Urameshi… please… Ahh… it’s me! Your friend! Yusuke!”

Yusuke growled, his eyes glaring down at Kuwabara and he drew close shifting his face to Kuwabara’s throat. He inhaled, snarling and making other small dangerous sounds that made Kuwabara feel like he was prey. Part of Kuwabara was scared, but the bigger part, the louder part was worried. If Yusuke hurt him in the state, then when Yusuke went back to normal... Kuwabara didn't even want to think about the face he would make.

“Yusuke! Please! Please, it’s me! Yusuke!” Kuwabara tried, the demon tightening his hold around Kuwabara’s wrists, demanding with his hold for Kuwabara to stay still. Yusuke’s nose pressed to the tender muscles of Kuwabara’s neck and sniffed. Soft little snuffling at first, and then a long dragging inhale.

Kuwabara shivered, and whispered, “Urameshi… man… you’re not going to hurt me. I know you don’t want that… please… please recognize me. I don't know who did this to you, but-”

Yusuke's teeth were on Kuwabara's throat, and Kuwabara froze.

Yusuke's fangs had not pierced Kuwabara's throat, but he was biting Kuwabara's neck, squeezing down on the thin skin of his vulnerable area. Well, it wasn't biting persay. It was like Yusuke was holding Kuwabara with his teeth.

"What-"

Yusuke bit harder against Kuwabara's throat, pressing him down into the earth. He growled, and Kuwabara finally understood that Yusuke was wanting him to be quiet and stay still. Swallowing, Kuwabara stilled himself, and shit his mouth, pressing his lips together in a tight seal. His instincts balked at Kuwabara as he stayed still, every nerve of his body telling him to fight. But Kuwabara forced himself to stay still. He trusted Yusuke. He trusts him.

After a pause, Yusuke released Kuwabara's throat and resumed his sniffing. He's trailed down to Kuwabara's collarbone, and then suddenly up the side of his face, and even into his hair. The more he explored, the more his grip lessened, and the more his yoki calmed.

"Do I... Do I smell like you?" Kuwabara asked. He's seen Yusuke just yesterday. They'd talked about a boxing match in the human realm they wanted to see. Yusuke had been normal less than twelve hours ago.

For his question, he received an irritated snort, and tutting huff against the side of his face.

Kuwabara flinched as spittal hit his cheek, and on reflex snapped, "Gross Urameshi! Don't sneeze on me!"

Yusuke admitted a strange sound in the back of his throat, and after a few seconds or so, Kuwabara realized it was Yusuke laughing. It certainly wasn't how Yusuke normally laughed, but it was still a laugh. Still Yusuke's cocky little laugh, somehow under the primal, guttural growl of it all. Kuwabara turned to look at Yusuke and found himself almost nose-to-nose with the demon.

The two stared at each other for a moment, and then Yusuke released his bruising grip from Kuwabara's wrists. With his eyes on Kuwabara, Yusuke crawled away, settling back on his haunches, and regarding Kuwabara with a strange expression. Kuwabara sat up, sore, as he usually could be after an encounter with Yusuke, but he'd never been more relieved for one of their scuffles to be over.

Kuwabara extended a hand, and gently called out again, "Urameshi... it's me. It's me."

Yusuke's eyes flickered to Kuwabara's hand, and then to Kuwabara's face, before back to his hand. Leaning forward on all fours, Yusuke nuzzled under Kuwabara's hand, until Kuwabara started to gingerly pat Yusuke's head, running his fingers through his hair. Yusuke growled and nuzzled under Kuwabara's hands, before tilting his face and pressing his nose to the red blemish he had left behind on Kuwabara's wrist. While maintaining eye contact with Kuwabara, Yusuke lapped at the darkening bruise on Kuwabara's wrist in apology.

Kuwabara's brows shot up into his hairline, and he felt a heat flush his cheeks and climb up into his ears. He retracted his hand, but Yusuke followed it until he was flopped into Kuwabara's lap, nuzzling against Kuwabara's waist like he was a house cat. Nervously, Kuwabara ran a hand down the top of Yusuke's head, and down along his back. Yusuke sighed, and then closed his eyes, sagging against Kuwabara's lap fully.

Something, Kuwabara wasn't sure what, but something had calmed Yusuke down. Had helped him understand who he was. It was something... at the very least. Though Kuwabara was damned if he knew what was making Yusuke act like this in the first place.

"Well..." Kuwabara inhaled, looking around the dense, strange trees of the Makai forest, "now what?"

Mukuro is one of the Three Great Youkai of the Demon World. The motif of this necklace overlaps with that of Hiei's.

At the end of YYH manga where it was revealed that reikai was brainwashing demons to attack humans, Yusuke wondered if he caught any that were victims of reikai's corruption under Enma. I'm pretty sure this was the case with the Saint Beasts.

The Saint Beasts are based on 4 guardian spirits of the 4 cardinal directions. They were actually worshipped as gods or benefactors in mythology. (hello Fushigi Yuugi fans, remember Suzaku, the phoenix of the south?) Everyone from Demon City was labeled as "criminal" but we never knew of their crimes. And the only demand of the Saint Beasts from reikai was their freedom as prisoners (which is not wrong because the endgame of YYH is human-youkai coexistence after the incarceration of Enma that Koenma did himself). But because reikai refused and oppressed demons, the Saint Beasts rebelled.

Now, based on mythology, the Saint Beasts should be strong and at least A class if not S class because these are youkai that were worshipped as guardian spirits. For reference, Kurama as a youko or a fox spirit that could be prayed to as well, was A class before getting hunted. And Raizen as a toushin or a war god was upper S class. Saint Beasts could be in between them based on the mythology.

So why were the Saint Beasts demoted to C class? The youkai that reikai were able to hunt and brainwash were probably once high leveled youkai. They caught A class youkai, brainwashed and weakened them to manageable levels and then let out to cause troubles that will justify the barrier for reikai. This could have been Kurama's fate when he was hunted by reikai if he wasn't able to escape as a spirit.

The Saint Beasts could have gotten the peace and coexistence that humans and youkai have at the end of the manga if only Yusuke and his team didn't kill them. It's ironic that Kurama and Hiei's first assignment to help Yusuke and Kuwabara to get pardoned as criminals was one of the times they were probably condemning the wrong people because of reikai's corrupted manipulation under Enma's rule.

Edit: To make this meta more on point, think about where the Worm Whistle could have come from. It's the weapon that Suzaku used to turn humans into brainwashed zombies. Hiei mentioned that he's only interested in the tools and treasures the Saint Beasts stole but never mentioned what those were. So did the Worm Whistle come from reikai? This was never clear in the story but the Worm Whistle functions like the Demon Sword that Hiei used. They both transformed humans. If the Worm Whistle is an artifact from reikai, why the hell does reikai have not one but two artifacts that were harmful to humans? And how did Suzaku manage to get something like that if the youkai of the Demon City could not escape from there? Reikai could have given the Saint Beasts a weapon to manipulate them into being a threat to ningenkai. If the arc about reikai's corruption was fleshed out in the manga, Koenma's investigation could involve how many artifacts reikai possesses that are threats to humanity which somehow end up in youkai hands.
