Henry swore that puberty wasn't meant to happen until you were a teenager, and if nothing else he knew it didn't involve growing horns.

The Plan

9 years and 11 months ago, Henry

“Ugh…..” I groan as I wake up to the now familiar sight of obsidian walls and the large oak desk at the end of my bed. 

I also check the clock to see if I slept properly tonight, and…. Nope, it’s only 4 in the morning. Ah, dang it. The Burning Hells are starting to feel like home, but everything still feels so empty and, while I know no one here will hurt me anymore, unlike what dad apparently did, I’m still scared someone will try to kill me.

Still, speaking of Dad, least I didn’t have a nightmare about him tonight, and also no flesh demons who disliked Miss Aravni came in to try kill us so that’s an improvement at least, but doesn’t change the fact that I’m probably not getting back to sleep for a while so it’s time for some tea.

Before I do though I take a glance at my two honorary siblings to see if there awake and need some as well.

First I look like Ayra who’s been tossing and turning by the looks of her hair but outside of that she looks very peaceful, which isn’t a surprise, based on what she told us her home was the real hell so this place has been heaven for her. Meanwhile Yuna….. isn’t in her bed at all.

“Oh no…” I mumble as I slip on my slippers and sneak out of the room to try find her. Yuna’s pretty much been the complete opposite of Ayra, she still partially blames herself for her mother selling her to Aravni and while she’s getting along with all of us now she has been having a horrific time settling in.

After a bit I manage to make it to the kitchen, which is where we usually go when we have a bad time sleeping and don’t want to bother anyone else, and while I can’t see anyone else the lights are on so I know someone’s in here.

“Yuna? Are you in here?” I ask quietly as I close the door behind me, and as I do I hear a small yelp behind the giant counter so it looks like I was right.

“!! A Ah, Henry… you’re awake too….?” Yuna asks nervously as she barely peaks out.

“Yeah, still getting used to everything,” I tell her as I go to her but she backs away?, “hey, there’s nothing to be afraid of, I’m not going to judge you for having a nightmare.”

“N No…. It’s not that….,” she explains now fully hidden, “it’s…. This is happening again and I know you’ll hate me if you see it….”

Happening again? Wait, how has this happened before? “Hey, don’t worry, we’re technically family with demons now, in this month alone I’ve seen so much, whatever it is I won’t judge.”

After a few moments of awkward silence Yuna hesitantly peeks her head out again. “….. Promise?”

“I promise.” With that she hesitantly comes out with her usual long purple-ish blue hair, grey-blue eyes, her white nightdress and….. a pair of blue fox tails?! Wait, that is what she was so worried about?

“That’s what you were afraid of? Okay, it is very random, but that’s not too bad, but it’s also so adorable! They look so fluffy!”

“You…. You like them….?” Yuna asks looking surprised.

“Of course!,” I confirm with a smile as I hold her hands, “we’ll have to ask Queen Aravni what’s going on but these aren’t anything to be ashamed of.”

Yuna just stands there in shock for a moment before she starts crying?! “I…. This happened before and…. Mom freaked out and she said everyone else would hate me for it… so she took me to a doctor to cut them off…. The more I’ve been thinking about it….. the more I’m thinking this might’ve been the reason she was so ready to get rid of me…. So her ‘monster kid’ wouldn’t ruin her reputation…..And I was worried off you’d found out you’d try to cut them off too…”

“Well then she’s even worse than I thought,” I tell her, “look, I know most humans aren’t cool with demons, but any parent who’s going to cut something off their child just because they’re only worried about it hurting them and not the kid is horrible, and no one down here is going to do that to you here, okay?”

“….. Got it,” Yuna replies after calming down a little and smiling, “thank you Henry…”

“I’m glad I could help,” I assure her with a smile, making her smile more before looking confused, “huh? Is something wrong?”

“Um….” she mumbles before pointing at my head but not saying anything, so I hesitantly feel around up there….. only to grasp what feels like a pair of small horns?!

“Huh?!,” I yelp before running to the window because it’s closer than a mirror and yup I have a pair of small dark pink horns?!, “okay, let’s hope Queen Aravni is still awake because we have to ask her about this!”

“Ask Aravni about what?,” Ayra(?!) asks as she comes in before staring at us, “….. huh, you two have demon stuff, neat.”

“Thank you?” Yuna replies both relived and confused (oh god her mom really did traumatise her into thinking she was a freak didn’t she?)

“Sorry if I woke you.” I apologise as I assume me leaving is what woke her up.

“Eh, don’t worry about it,” Ayra assures me, “but I did pass Aravni’s door on the way here, there was a light under it so I do think she’s awake, so might as well ask her now.”

“Oh, that’s a relief.” I admit as I grab Yuna’s hand as the three of us leave the room and make it to the Demon Queen’s door and quietly open it and see she’s talking to two people, one is a very professional male Demon with grey hair and also has a tail and horns like Aravni albeit smaller and blue, and the other is a regal woman with dark grey hair wearing a black and grey wispy dress and had black horns and bat wings.

“-so in conclusion, we have eleven years roughly to do this before Gabriel tries to destroy us all.” The man explains sternly- wait destroy us?!

“Ugh, I knew this was coming, and at least we’re mostly prepared, but I still gotta deal with the seal so I can get out of here and help.” Aravni groans frustrated but not surprised.

“Well, that’s what the kids are for, isn’t it?” The woman asks somewhat coldly.

“Well it’s why I was making contacts with humans,” Aravni fires back, “but I was hoping for adults, not to drag innocent kids into this, especially since Henry and Ayra will barely be adults by then, and Yuna won’t even be that.”

“I know, trust me if it was Marianne I wouldn’t want her getting involved either,” the woman adds with her arms crossed, “but the barrier won’t be unstable enough for you to make any more contracts until about 3 years before the deadline, and that won’t be enough time to get any mortals ready.”

“Imogen is right your majesty, you have to tell them.” The man agrees making Aravni make an ‘I know’ face.

“Tell us what?” Ayra asks as she opens the door more and getting all three of the Demons attention.

“!! Kids! Wasn’t expecting you three up this late-!,” Aravni yelps looking surprised before that surprise gets mixed with joy, “oh my god you’re half demons and you all look adorable!!”

“Half-AGH!!” Yuna yelps as the demon queen swoops all of us up into a hug.

“…..To be a bit more specific,” the woman Imogen chimes in after looking at us puzzled for a moment, “the boy is half Demon, the younger girl is half Kitsune, and the older girl is a Witch.”

“A Witch? Haven’t heard that one before. Also Aravni can you put us down please.” Ayra states bluntly.

“Ah, sorry, I’m just so proud of my little babies!” Aravni apologises as she puts us down while cooing.

“Ahem, continuing,” the man states while clearing his throat, “a Witch is essentially a human with the potential to use demon magic, they’re our equivalent to Exorcists.”

“Pfft, Father will be so mad if he ever finds out.” Ayra says with a chuckle.

“S Still… are you sure…?,” Yuna asks nervously, “K Kitsune’s have always seemed so pretty but kinda scary in the pictures…. If Mom’s reaction is anything to go by then I’m just the latter…. A And before you say it I know I shouldn’t be listening to what she says but….. well until I came here she was pretty much the only person I was ever able to talk to….. So she’s really my main reference for things….”

“….. We’re killing her in a few years right?” Imogen asks after a few moments of stunned silence making Yuna go pale.

“Ehe, she’s just joking,” Aravni assures her but gives Imogen a look that screams ‘we’ll plan it when the kids aren’t here’, “but yeah, you are, and you are adorable Yuna sweetie!”

“….. Ehe, thank you Miss Aravni.” Yuna replies with a smile and… oh my god her tails wag when she’s happy that’s adorable!! Ahem… better not let her hear that, that’ll probably freak her out any more.

“Ahem, anyway,” I say turning to the guy, “what were you all talking about mister?”

“Just call me Seth,” he introduces professionally, “but to make a long story short well, how to I explain this in a way kids raised in the mortal realm would get….the God of this world, Gabriel, he only cares for two things, mortals and angels obeying him, and exterminating all demons.”

“Pretty much, but he doesn’t even care about them either, he’ll happily kill them if they disobey him or just to get to a Demon,” Imogen continues still stone faced but now her eyes are hiding rage, “and now he’s planning on proving it by going through all of humanity to get to us.”

“!!! W W Why?!” I ask now freaking out while an even more afraid Yuna is holding on to Ayra who’s looking panicked for the first time since we got here.

“He’s an emotionless bastard who thinks we’re abominations that’s why,” Aravni answers also getting annoyed, “that’s why I was making the soul contracts to begin with. The only way to stop him is the seven divine weapons, and Demons can’t touch those so I was trying to get some humans on my side.”

“Instead, our asshole parents gave you us instead,” Ayra finishes, “so unless you can get more contracts out we’ve gotta get those weapons.”

“Pretty much,” Aravni admits with a sigh, “I’m sorry to put this on you kids but short of a miracle I don’t think the barrier will weaken enough for me to get anyone else in time.”

“It’s fine your Majesty,” I assure the Demon Queen as I do my best to try be the emotionally stable one, “at least we have a few years to prepare, and hey, I did always like the idea of being a hero so I guess it all works out.”

“Y You’re taking this really well Henry…” Yuna mumbles looking as terrified as she was on her first day.

“Ehe, better look on the bright side then be afraid,” I admit as I mess with her hair a little, “and hey, this is a good way to prove to our parents that we’re worth more than what they sold us for and show them up, no faster way to be well liked than being a hero and saving the world.”

“A hero….,” Yuna mumbles a bit before looking up with a determined smile, “that…. Sounds nice.”

“Welp, if there was ever any doubt that I was in, you two agreeing put them to rest,” Ayra adds smirking, “though now I’ve gotta come up with some plans for when we go back up.”

“Yay!! Sibling adventure!!” Raquel says as she gets out from under the bed- wait Raquel?!

“AH!!” Yuna yelps as she jumps onto me, making Ayra chuckle and the rest of the adults look not impressed.

“Aravni, I thought you said Raquel didn’t sneak in this time?” Seth asks with a sigh as Imogen just rolls her eyes.

“I did, I checked under the bed and she wasn’t there,” Aravni defends herself  before turning to her daughter, “and sweetie I thought I told you to stay out of these meetings.”

“You did, but I don’t care,” Aravni fires back, “this stuff involves me too, and I’m not a kid anymore mom, I’m seventeen thousand. I can’t afford to just sit outside and wait for you to tell me the news in the most PG way possible, I’m the Princess of the Burning Hells, I need to know this stuff so I can keep my home safe.”

“She’s right and you guys know it.” A new voice chimes in from under the bed and who crawls out is a girl about Raquel’s age with short ‘so dark it’s almost black’ grey hair, grey eyes, black horns, a pair of small grey wings at her hips and wearing a long and elegant black, white and purple dress.

“What the- Marianne you too?” Imogen asks with a ‘I’m not mad I’m just disappointed’ face.

“I’m sorry Mother,” Marianne apologises with a bow before standing firm, “but Raquel is right, this concerns us and we’re old enough, we have the right to know.”

“Okay, before we continue, is anyone listening in?” Seth asks with a glare- wait why did Ayra pull me and Yuna back-?!

“AGH!!!” Ryoko(?!) yelps as she falls out of an air vent, quickly followed by Akio and a demon boy I don’t recognise with brown hair, a ‘business style that I can still kick your ass in’ outfit, and eyes, tail and horns that match Seth- oh.

“Big brother, your majesty, Lady Imogen, I’m sorry, they talked me into it…” the new guy apologises to the three while Ryoko gives a ‘worth it’ smirk and Akio just facepalms.

“Markus, we’ll talk about this more later,” Seth tells his embarrassed younger brother before sighing, “and as much as you all spying on us is obnoxious, you do have a point.”

“Hmm….,” Aravni hums before her eyes light up a little, “adults huddle! Kids give us a few seconds!” With that, and Imogen eye rolling, the adults huddle up leaving the rest of us to stand and wait.

“Um, congrats on the demon thing by the way.” Akio tells us somewhat awkwardly to break the silence.

“Agreed, you’re even more awesome and kick ass now!” Raquel adds while messing with our hair.

“How many times are you going to keep doing that?” Ayra asks semi annoyed but still clearly enjoying it.

“Ehe, glad to see you and your new siblings are getting along so well Raquel,” Marianne chuckles before looking a bit shocked, “oh! I should probably introduce myself properly, I’m Marianne, it’s a pleasure to meet you three.”

“Same here,” I agree with a little bow, “I’m Henry, and these are my new little siblings Ayra and Yuna.”

“He’s only older by two months.” Ayra grumbles while Yuna shyly waves.

“I know the feeling, Seth is only older by two hundred years and now I never hear the end of it,” Markus adds with a sigh, “oh, I’m Markus by the way, though you probably already got that.”

“Yay! We’re all introduced now!” Ryoko cheers  with her big flappy sleeves going wild, but before anyone can say anything else the adults end their huddle.

“Alright,” Imogen states looking not the most pleased but accepted what’s happening, “we have decided to let you all in on everything from now on, but, if we’re telling you, all of you have to be all in.”

“All in on what Lady Imogen?” Akio asks as I start getting nervous and excited.

“The plan to get the weapons!,” Aravni continues, “Henry, Ayra and Yuna are the only three who can use them, but they’re going to need help to get to them, so if we tell you what’s going on, you’re going up to the mortal realm with them and helping with the mission. So, you kids in?”

“Do you even need to ask Mom, of course we’re in!” Raquel agrees with everyone else nodding to confirm, though Markus does look a tad more nervous so I squeeze his hand to try calm him down.

“Alright then,” Seth states as Aravni looks proud and Imogen pulls Marianne aside for what looks like a ‘concerned parent’ talk, “it’s late even by demon standards and we were about to wrap this meeting up anyway so you all go back to sleep. I’ll fill Mahiro and Saya in on the fact there’s going to be a…. Few more people in on the plan now, and we’ll go into more details in the morning, okay?”

“Okay, thanks you three!” Ryoko says cheerfully as all us kids (besides Marianne and the now being lightly scolded Markus) leave the Demon Queen’s room and split up-

“Um… Raquel,” Yuna asks our ‘big sis’ nervously making me and Ayra stop and wait, “I…. Can I sleep with you tonight please….?”

“Aww! Of course you can!,” Raquel agrees while giving her a hug and turning to us, “do you two want to as well?”

“Eh, why not.” Ayra agrees with an embarrassed blush and I nod as well as we follow her to her room and I can’t help but smile. Being down here is great, and I’ll do whatever I can to protect it.

That was the most fun I’ve had in a long time.” He spoke up with a smirk on his face when it came to going toe to toe with the android..or at least the thought of fighting a machine was invigorating. He’s fought demons, ghouls and ghosts but a machine would definitely be the newest contender, however with the order to go back home it seems that Yusuke’s dream match would have to wait another day. 

“H’aw man. Oh well maybe next time you’ll let me go mano a’ scrappo with that thing. That aside.” Yusuke then turned towards the blond, both hands tucked into the pockets of his pants and he began examining the person before him. “You must be some kinda egghead t’ make that robot yourself. Or maybe yer loaded and the fam’s allowance got you that bodyguard.”

Ordering the android to go back home, so he can actually explore the area with a little more freedom. Which was unfortunate he wanted enjoy the day with his android too, but not if every punk he sees is a potential threat. To think one would be so interested in visiting a convenience store in the first place.

One night, Yuna went with her Mother Ivy for a business deal, and for better or worse, that night changed her life forever.

A Contract Gone Wrong

10 years ago, Yuna:

“Alright, we’re here!,” Mom announces making me wake up from my nap as she parks the car outside of a somewhat old looking church, “Yuna sweetie it’s time to get out!”

“Ah, coming mom!” I agree trying my best to wake myself up and stay awake, easier said than done given that it’s well past my bedtime.

“Okay, let’s get a move on, don’t want to keep my client waiting.” Mom states as she takes my hand and we walk inside the church. Apparently someone wants to commission Mom for a painting but they wanted to meet up here for some reason, and because it’s late and Mom couldn’t get a babysitter because everyone’s afraid to go outside with the Demon barrier being weaker so she’s taking me along.

Still, I have my sketchbook at least and once we’re inside the church it does look very nice so I can hopefully just draw while I wait for Mom to talk to her client. But….

“Mom, are we here early?” I ask a bit confused because I can’t see anyone else in here.

Mom smiles before answering. “Don’t worry about it sweetie, they just said they’d meet me outside, you just wait in here so no demons will try to get you, okay?”

“Okay but…. Are you sure this is a good idea being here this late?” I’m sure this is just nothing, but…. Something is giving me a very bad feeling about this.

Mom smile turns somewhat aggressive as she replies. “Normally no, but this is life changing money this client is promising, it will me fine, so just stay in here and don’t cause a scene, got it?”

“Got it.” I agree making Mom nod approvingly as she goes back outside, but I can’t shake my nerves so I go and sit by the door so I can hear if something goes wrong.

“-so once you sign here and here, we have a deal.” A male voice that I don’t recognise says outside the door, and I’m assuming it’s Mom’s client.

“Ah perfect, but can I give it one more read over first?” Mom asks and I guess the man agrees cause I barely hear the crinkling of paper being passed over, and after a minute of silence I hear the sound of pen hitting paper.

“The contract is now sealed,” the man states as (I think) Mom hands the paper back, “now then- wait, that’s not your name written there.”

“Contract never said it had to be my soul that I gave up.” Mom replies sounding smug- wait soul?!Is… is Mom bargaining with a demon?!

“What-?! Oh the hells it doesn’t, damn it your majesty I though I told you to take this to Seth first to make sure there’s no loopholes,” the demon replies with exasperation, “fine, I guess a deal is still a deal, but you do know the soul has to be nearby for me to take it right?”

“Oh I know, and she’s just inside there.” Mom answers-!! Inside…. I’m the only one in here…. Is she…. No, no way…. She wouldn’t, would she?

Creaking the door open a bit to not draw any attention, I see Mom with her back to the door looking at her nails like this is boring, along with the still exasperated Demon who’s a guy with black hair, blue eyes with slitted pupils, along with cat ears, claws and double tails (a Japanese Nekomata I think if I remember from my Demon studies correctly) and wearing a fancy suit. He also looks me in the eye after a moment but instead of any anger or ‘I am going to eat you’ he just looks at me with pity.

After that the Nekomata glares at Mom like he’s trying to burn her with an eye blast. “Oh you are a monster, fine then, if this is the type of parent you are then the kid will probably be better off in the Hells anyway.” With that the demon snaps his fingers-!!

“Fire!! Fire!!,” I yelp as I’m surrounded by flames which gets Mom’s attention, “Mom help me!! Please!”

“Now Yuna, you remember that you promised you’d do anything to make me happy,” Mom tells me with a smirk on her face, “well this will make me a lot happier, so just be nice for the demons, okay?”

“H H Huh…?,” I stammer not knowing what to say as Mom walks away, “w wait, Mom-!! AGH!!!!!”

Fire fire oh god!! It’s not hurting at least but why am I surrounded by it?! Thankfully it goes away after a minute…. But I suddenly have much bigger problems because now I’m in some kind of throne made of obsidian and gold?!

What…. What’s happening….?!” I manage to ask while struggling to breathe, I don’t know if it’s because of the stress, the air, both or something else but what is going on, and if this is a dream I want to wake up!

“Child, I know this is stressful but calm down.” the Nekomata demon tells me as he rubs my back a little, and while it helps me breathe it doesn’t help my stress.

“A Are you going to eat me….?,” I ask while pinching myself and hoping this a dream but unfortunately not, “all my t teachers day demons eat people….”

“Okay first of all that’s only the flesh demons, 95% of us don’t do that,” he assures me, “and secondly, my boss who your ‘mother’ was supposed to give her soul to but gave yours instead, she’s a big softie for kids so you’ll be alright, I promise.”

“O Okay…. But…..,” I struggle to get out as now I’m starting to cry, “why… why would Mom do this…? I I was good, I I did everything right and w when I messed up I fixed it…! W Why would Mom s send me away…!”

“Because some humans are worse than any demon down here,” the demon tells me while handing me a napkin to dry my eyes with, “some people are so selfish and power hungry they’ll hurt anyone, even innocents to do it. This isn’t your fault child, alright?”

“I I guess…” I… I’m still not entirely convinced. I have to of done something wrong for Mom to do this, when she gets mad it’s always my fault. But before I can think of anything I get distracted by two pillars of fire appearing in the room and a pair of people coming out of each.

The first one has a demon woman with blonde hair, red eyes, pirate clothes and has a golden tail and matching scales on her face, and she’s accompanied by a boy slightly older than me with somewhat dark skin and neat brown hair and eyes.

The second one meanwhile has a demon man with dirty blonde hair with blue eyes, fangs, red face markings, horns and a Japanese style outfit so I’m assuming he’s an Oni, and he’s with a girl also a bit older than me with braided pale brown hair and maroon eyes.

“Ah- what?!,” the boy yelps as the two demons look confused, “w what’s going on here?! Where am I?!”

“I’m assuming the Burning Hells,” the girl replies looking freaked out but probably the calmest out of the three of us, “which isn’t good but honestly I’m surprised my Father didn’t do this sooner.”

“Okay, we’ll unpack that later,” the Oni states as he pulls over the pirate and the Nekomata, “why the hell are there kids here, the ones we were negotiating with were adults.”

“Well, I don’t know about you two,” the Nekomata explains while pulling out a piece of paper and the two kids go over to me nervously, “but the boss forgot to send the contract for loophole checking so the one who I was sent to signed her daughters soul away instead, that shy blue haired girl over there.”

“!! H Hi….” I stammer still feeling very nervous about all of this.

“Wait, they can do that?,” The pirate asks as they pull out a piece of paper and read it, “oh fuck you’re right.”

“Glad to know incompetent law makers aren’t just an earth thing.” The girl quips shocking me and the boy and the three demons laugh.

“How are you so calm about this miss, our parents sold us to hell!” The boy yelps panicked.

“It’s Ayra, Ayra George, so don’t bother with the miss thing please. And my father never gave a damn about me, and he’s power hungry as hell,” the girl replies, “so I always kinda figured it would either be I get out of the house or he’d sell me off, either to a devil or an orphanage.”

“Um…. Since we’re introducing ourselves, I I’m Yuna….,” I awkwardly introduce because I should probably at least be on good terms with the kids I’m in this mess with, “a and I’m in the opposite boat, I was always being the best I could be, and I I thought my Mom cared about me but…. I want to say I guess she didn’t but I can’t shake the feeling I did something wrong….”

“Hey, what did we say about this, don’t blame yourself child, okay?” The Nekomata reminds me and I nod even if I’m still not entirely convinced.

“The cat guy is right,” the boy agrees, “and I might as well introduce myself as well. I’m Henry Oliver, and I…. Well, I noticed my Dad was becoming more distant lately but…. I didn’t think it was because of this, so I guess I’m in the middle of the ‘saw this coming’ spectrum? I’m sorry I just have no idea what to do right now.”

“Don’t worry kid, I think we’re all confused right now, but we’ll work something out” the Dragon assures him with a toothy grin and I see she has very sharp teeth, “oh, I’m Ryoko by the way! And those two are Akio and Mahiro respectively.”

“Greetings.” The Nekomata, Mahiro, states politely with a small bow meanwhile the Oni, Akio, awkwardly waves, I suppose he’s a bit shy. 

Before anyone else can say anything else though, the door to the throne room swings open (and me and Henry hold onto each other in panic) and in comes two people.

The first is a teenager girl with messy black hair with red tips, along with blood red eyes with black sclera, pointy ears, horns and a tail as well as a pink red and black gothic styled dress.

The second is a woman who looks very similar to the girl, but is easily the tallest person in the room, and is wearing a red, gold and black dress, pure black hair that’s long and messy, one eye covered with a gold wrap and the exposed one is bright red with black sclera, and even longer tail and horns.

“Alright, I have arrived, where are those new souls-?!,” the woman declares before spotting me Henry and a surprisingly calm Ayra and looks frustrated, “guys, why the hell are there three eight year olds here?”

“A Actually I’m seven….” I mumble hoping what Mahiro said about the boss being a sucker for kids is true.

“As for what happened boss,” Mahiro explains while handing the woman 3 pieces of paper, “there was a loophole in the contact and the signers sold their children’s souls instead of their own. This is why I told you to have Seth double check the contracts first.”

“Ugh, jackasses, and I’ll remember next time,” she groans before turning back to us, “and kids, I’m gonna explain what’s going on here. First of all, welcome to the Burning Hells, wish the circumstances were better but oh well. And before you ask no I’m not gonna take your souls or do anything to you, you’re kids and your parents swindled all of us so don’t worry about that.”

“Oh, um, thank you madam.” Henry states awkwardly.

“Just call me Aravni,” she tells us all with a smile, “now, normally I’d send you all back no problem, however your parents just sold your souls away so like hell I’m sending you back to them, so, do you have any other relatives?”

“Not that I’m aware of/Nope/I was adopted and Mom is the only person from my adopted family that I know.” Henry, Ayra and myself answer making Aravni and the other Demons in the room look at each other in concern.

“Okay, that’s out,” Aravni states after a moment as well as a bit of face wrinkling, “how about plan B, kids, how would you like to stay here instead?”

“….. What?!” All three of us ask because, yeah, what?!

“Aww, don’t freak out kids,” the teenager says cheerfully finally joining in-Agh she’s picking us up!, “things down here are great! Plus staying with Mom in particular means you get a nice house, good food, and most importantly, yours truly as a big sis.”

“Raquel calm down you’re scaring the kids!” Akio yelps as he runs over and helps us all down and is it just me or do I feel a bit dizzy.

“Aww come on Aki I was just being friendly.” Raquel replies with a toothy grin.

“Yeah well can your friendliness come with a warning next time please….” Ayra mumbles looking even more dizzy than me so we both just lean on each other while Henry just looks baffled.

“Ehe, yeah, those two are a bit much, especially together, but you get used to it.” Ryoko assures us with a wink.

“I believe we should confirm if they want to stay first before you say that Ryoko.” Mahiro chimes in making all the demons, even Aravni, pout.

“Well, I don’t know about you two,” Ayra states, “but it looks like our options are either here or an orphanage, and I’ve already been to the latter and I know it isn’t good, so unless just being down here will kill me then I guess I’ll stay.”

“Don’t worry, it’s totally safe for humans, it’s been a while but we’ve had some stay for decades before,” Aravni assures her as she and Raquel get excited, “now, what about you two?”

“Well…. If it isn’t any trouble then I suppose so?” Henry agrees albeit looking noticeably less sure then Ayra- wait why is everyone looking at me now- oh right.

“I…,” I say not knowing for sure but sighing as I realise no one will really miss me back on the surface, “I guess….”

“Alright, hi five kids!” Ryoko tells us and after the three of us look at each other awkwardly for a moment we all return it and I crack a smile despite myself. I don’t know what I did to make Mom send me here but, whether I deserved it or not, maybe I’ll avoid making those same mistakes here.

“That’s the spirit,” Aravni tells us all with a smile, “now, as much as I’d love to give you three the tour myself, me and Mahiro have to go talk to Seth, not only to get the loopholes out of these contracts, but also to make sure this get’s formalised. I’ll be back in like an hour though, promise!”

“Later Mom!,” Raquel says cheerfully as the two demons leave before smirking, “alright new siblings, we have an hour to screw around and find out until they’re done, how’s about a kitchen raid?!”

“Um, by raid, do we mean steal food or actually raid it?” Henry asks looking curious and like he’s not opposed to either option.

“We do the latter sometimes, but for now let’s stick to the former,” Akio explains with a small chuckle, “you kids need some cupcakes.”

“He’s right, and here’s your warning,” Raquel agrees before picking us up again-!!, “now let’s get going-!!”

“FIRE!!!!” Henry screams as he hides by pressing into me for dear life because Raquel has fire coming out of her back!

“Huh, oh, these are just my wings,” she explains like this is normal, “all Noble Demons get fire wings, but unless I actively want to hurt someone with them they don’t burn, promise.”

“Beautiful…” I blurt out cause now that the panics over and I’m getting a better look at the pink, yellow and red flames they do look lovely.

“And awesome.” Ayra agrees also looking impressed, and after hesitating Henry uses his free hand to phase it through the flames, and after a few times and it seemingly not hurting he smiles brightly.

“If you think that’s awesome, I got something to show you kids tomorrow,” Ryoko adds as she and Akio start running with Raquel flying after them, “now come on, let’s go!

Goro: We need to distract the guard. Throw something in the trash can to make a noise so he’ll look the other way. 

Ren: *picks up a chair*

Yusuke: Ren! Not the chair! Something small!

Ren: *Picks up Haru*

Haru: Really?

Ren proudly showing off his human siblings to his demon friends. “What’s up my dudes? I’m a Big Bro now! These are my new siblings. If anything were to happen to them things would get very messy, very quickly.”

Haru: I can hear you having bad thoughts about yourself.

Goro: Ok first of all, stop reading my mind. Second, they’re not bad thoughts their objective facts about I’m the only regular human here, and third, you’re kind of proving my point.

Haru: First of all, sorry it’s hard to turn it off, second no one cares if you’re a regular human. We’re all here for one reason. Our dads suck. And your dad still sucks regardless of whether you can read minds or create illusions, so we’re all going to kill them together.

Yusuke: Agreed. I wouldn’t want to exact vengeance upon Madarame without you, 

Haru: We’re family, and that means we fight our enemies together.

Goro: Fine, fine, jeez are we going to do this every time I feel minorly inadequate.

Haru: Yes, of course

Yusuke: Because you’d do the same for us.

Goro: Thanks guys.

Demon Fam Fic: Yusuke’s birthday.

[A/n] this was @askmarietheapprentice‘s suggestion! I meant to get it out earlier but it ended up kinda getting away from me. Anyway enjoy some babies in Hell

“Happy birthday Yusuke!”

After 3 months in Hell, they’ve all gotten used to Ren’s sudden entrances, but usually he’s kind enough to appear when it isn’t the middle of the night.

“What time is it?” Haru asks, shielding her eyes from the blue flames that Ren brought to light up their shared bedroom.

“4:28 and 32 seconds, Pacific Time! The exact moment Yusuke was born.” Ren says.

“How do you know that?” Yusuke asks.

“Father owns your souls.”

“Wait, so it’s actually your birthday?” Goro asks. 

“Well, yes.” Yusuke says.

“And you didn’t tell us?” Haru gasps. “We would’ve put something together like you guys did for me!”

“I don’t really want anything.” Yusuke says. “I was just going to make my favorite dinner and some cake.”

“Well, we could’ve done that for you, at least.”

“I like making my own dinner and cake.”

“So we know what we’re doing for dinner.” Ren says, picking up Yusuke. “But there’s another 12  to 14 hours before that, and until then I’ve got the perfect plan for a birthday trip.”

“Can we sleep in a little longer?” Yusuke groans. 

“Nope! It’s very time sensitive! You’re lucky, waking up at the exact moment you were born means you have enough time for breakfast!”

After a hearty breakfast of birthday pancakes and tea, they’ve all gathered on Kidd’s ship. There’s a thick fog in the area, that cills to the bone.

“We’re here!” Ren announces as the fog parts, and a giant glacier comes into view.

“Drop anchor!” Kidd orders, and the ship comes to a stop. “Alright, so what’s the plan.”

“We’re going to the top for a bit, and then back down.” 

“You goin’ like that?” 

Ren tilts his head. “Like wha- oh right.” 

With a poof, Ren turns into a cat and lands in Yusuke’s arms. “Now we’re good.”

“Why do you have to be a cat?” Haru asks.

“Oh, Goemon’s definitely going to attack us if he finds out I’m here,” Ren explains, “and I kind of suck at fighting in places where it’s cold.” 

“For my birthday you took us somewhere we're going to get attacked?” Yusuke asks.

“What’s the first thing I taught you?” 

Yusuke sighs. “Everything is going to attack you.”

“Right! And that’s why you brought your weapons. And besides, his grudge is with me, even if he did notice something as tiny as you three, he’s not the type to get revenge by proxy.”

“See you soon, Captain!” Haru waves as they get on one of the smaller ships to get to shore.

“Have fun! Don't die!"

On the shore of the glacier, there’s a raging snow storm.

“K-kind of wish we’d gotten goggles.” Goro says, shivering.

“We’ll add t-that to the shopping list.” Haru agrees.

“F-follow me g-guys.” Ren’s black body stands out in stark contrast to the snow. They all hold hands, and follow Ren until they come across a door.

“S-someone with hands, open it.” Ren says.

“I got it.” Yusuke yanks on the door as hard as he can, and it slowly opens enough for everyone to squeeze through.

“Alright. So now we just have to climb up all these stairs and get to the top, preferably without Goemon seeing us!” Ren says.

Yusuke, Goro, and Haru stare at the giant, winding staircase and then at each other.

“Why do demons have to be so damn big?” Goro mutters as he lifts himself onto the first step and Haru and Yusuke follow suit.

As they climb, Yusuke keeps stopping to admire the art pieces on the wall. There’s watercolors, acrylics, and careful sketches lining the walls.  “Hey, Ren, did Goemon make these?” 

“Yeah, I mean, this is his workshop.”

“Amazing!” Yusuke gasps. “The way he blends colors together to portray the different emotions, it’s beautiful. I hope to be this good some day, thank you for bringing us here.”

“Well, this isn’t exactly what I wanted to show you.” Ren says, “but I’m glad you’re enjoying it.”

They come to a larger platform, where intricately crafted ice sculptures are on display. 

“Woah. I didn’t even think you could get ice to do this,” Goro says examining a sculpture of a woman who looked as though she was wearing actual fabric.

Yusuke wanders over to a group of statues contorted into various abstract shapes. While on their own, the intricate patterns were impressive, taken together...

“These are about the war with Yalbadoath!” Yusuke realizes.

“How can you tell?” Ren asks. 

“Ok, so start here. This one is rigid, uniform all the way to the top, and then this one, it’s rigid in a similar way but there’s a tiny flaw right there. And in this piece the flaws are bigger. Then this one, any sort of structure is gone, and it’s sharp and chaotic. Then in the final one there are two clear sections, one that has that ordered pattern from the first, but only on the top half while the bottom half is still chaos." Yusuke explains. "They represent the world under Yalbadoath's rule, Satanael's rebellion, and the wars in Hell afterwards!"

"Oh, that's so cool." Goro says.

"Not bad, small one." A voice says. A large demon holding a pipe rises from the ground behind them. "Although I would encourage you to consider how the artist feels about the event, and what they might be trying to say about similar circumstances through his piece."

Yusuke nods. "Ummm… the artist feels…" Yusuke stares at the sculptures, trying to decipher their secrets.

"You seem rather young, how old are you?" The demon asks.

"Seven." Yusuke says.

"Seven…" Goemon laughs. "Oh, I've forgotten how short lived you humans are. Do not be upset if you can't figure it out, you've barely lived a decade!"

“Excuse me, are you Goemon?" Haru asks.

"I am. And I take it you three are Satanael's human children?"

"That depends." Goro says. "What would you do if we were?"

Goemon laughs again. "Such bold children! I have no problems with humans, or Satanael. Were Arsene here, I would freeze him in the heart of this glacier for stealing from me, but I have no quarrel with you three."

"Oh thank goodness." Haru sighs in relief. "I'm Haru, this is Goro, and Yusuke." Haru's eyes fall on Ren on Goro's shoulder. "...and our completely normal cat… Akira! Akira the cat from the human world and who is just a cat."

"Meow." Ren says.

"It's nice to meet you. Now, what brings you 

 here? Usually Zorro would come if your father had a message."

"Well, it's my birthday so we're here to see something at the top of the glacier." Yusuke explains.

Goemon lifts his gigantic pipe to his mouth and colored puffs of smoke float out. "How often do you humans celebrate your birth?"

"Every year." Yusuke says.

"Ah! We demons do celebrate our birth, but only once every century or so. A year is barely a blink of an eye to someone who lives for eternity. To be so short lived you celebrate every year. Fascinating." Goemon nods to himself. "Yes, I do believe you three have given me an idea for an art piece."

"You're welcome." Goro says. "Do you think you could give us a ride to the top? We're told it's time sensitive."

"But of course!" Goemon taps the ground with his pipe, and suddenly everything rushes past them and they're at the top of the glacier.

The air is still here, unlike the lower parts, and looking down, Yusuke can see the snowstorm raging below.

From the top of the glacier, the ocean spreads out for miles, and he can also make out Captain Kidd's ship.

"I do believe it's time. Look up children."

The sky's dark one second, and then suddenly it's awash with colors. Blues flow into greens flow into purples flow into pinks, all dancing across the sky.

"It's beautiful." Yusuke says in awe.

"I've never seen anything like this." Goro says.

Haru nods. "I think I might cry."

"The lights only appear here every 500 years or so." Goemon says. "You are quite lucky, children and cat."

Yusuke makes a frame with his fingers and looks around, finally settling on Haru, Ren, and Goro back lit by the lights.

"Yusuke, what are you doing?" Haru asks.

"I want to capture this moment in a painting." Yusuke smiles. "My first birthday with my new family."

"Awww." Haru starts to walk over to him

"Don't move!" Yusuke snaps before pulling out his sketchbook. "This should only take a few minutes."

Once he's finished with the sketch, Goemon takes them all down to the bottom of the glacier.

"Thank you so much!" Yusuke says.

"Thank you for providing me with inspiration. In fact, here's a gift. From one artist to another." Goemon snaps his fingers and two lobsters appear in Yusuke's hands.

"They're beautiful, thank you." Yusuke says.

"I hope you'll let me see your piece when it is finished."

Yusuke nods. "I will."

"Goodbye children and cat! Enjoy your tragically short lifespans!" Goemon says as they make their way to where the boat was. "And feel free to return any time without Arsene."

"Thank you so much!" Yusuke waves back. 

"So, did I plan a great birthday trip or what?" Ren asks, once their a ways from shore.

"I loved it." Yusuke says. "Goemon's nice too. What did you do to make him hate you?"

Ren rolls his eyes. "He's still mad I stole from him."

"Why'd you steal from him?"

"Like I said, I'm bad in the cold, so I like to practice my thievery in places where it's cold. And he's still mad about it like, 500 years later!"

"I'm kinda on Goemon's side here." Goro says. 

"What?"

"I mean you did steal from him."

"It's not like I took anything important!"

"You'd hate it too if someone stole from you."

"No one's good enough to steal from me."

"You're missing the point!"

Haru sighs and turns to Yusuke. "So what were you thinking about for that cake?"

Dumb idea: the demon is Satanael and he’s adopting them and bring them into the Phantom Thief fold and they’ll take down their bad fathers. With Joker, Mona, Skull, Panther, Queen and Oracle befriending and training them. Joker is Satanael’s son the leader of the Phantom Thieves and a good friend. (He’s exited to be a brother.)

Satanael: Wow, your dads gave you up way faster than I was expecting. Uh, sorry kids, you want to grow up and kick their asses?

Goro: Yeah!

Ren: I’M A BIG BROTHER :D

I also love the mental image of the rest of the PT as a bunch of demons teaching the three of them to fight and do magic and stuff, but when they all go to the human world, they have to figure out how to act human and it’s Goro, Haru, and Yusuke who have to show them the ropes

For your consideration for Demon Fam AU, Ann and Futaba spot Shiho and Hikari respectively and are freaking out cause they don't know how to court the cute humans and they try asking Yusuke, Haru, and Goro cause they're humans, they should know. Except they were sold to Sataneal pretty young and even if they weren't, they're not really the best people to go to for love advice.

I’d say 6-7 is probably a good age for the three of them to have gotten like, the gist of the human world to be slightly better than the demons but still not know stuff like this.

Haru, who spent one year at an all-girls catholic elementary school before being sold to satan: I’m pretty sure if you try to hold hands outside of marriage you blow up or something.

Miki just becomes the unofficial teacher to the blueberry sibs for their illusions and since I think Aki and Mina are dating in this Au Miki tells Mina all the stories. Or whoever he’s dating.

Miki as the unofficial illusion master is great! I like the idea of her helping the gang out.

Also I’m making an executive decision for RyoAkiMina because a) If I’m remembering correctly there’s been a pretty even split for both Ryomina and Akimina and well, Mina’s got two hands and b) Miki and Yusuke realizing their brothers are dating.
