to summarize an unduly rambly post: our control over kris has been steadily growing more and more distressing for them throughout the story. the snowgrave route, possibly the most gut wrenching, violating imposition of our will on theirs AND Noelle's (*homer voice* so far!), explicitly, thematically, and visually represents possession and coercion through romantic imagery, specifically rings and weddings. it's nauseating. it forces both of them into an implied relationship that neither of them is comfortable in by leveraging noelle's desperate wish to reconnect with her childhood friend. it has exactly the horrible connotations you don't want it to have.
ralsei being presented as both a direct callback to asriel—both the undertale asriel we know, and y'know... kris' brother in deltarune—while also setting him and kris up in a clearly romantic context that kris does not seem to either share or be comfortable with, is not a coincidence. it's not an accident. "isn't that a little incestuous" that's the point! kris' agency being stripped away is one of deltarune's main thematic cores: the game is repeatedly setting up a pattern where that theme is reinforced by putting kris in upsetting, unwanted romantic relationships for OUR entertainment. nothing fits the bill better than pairing them with the nostalgia bait companion that literally looks like their brother.

I feel like people trying to justifying 'hating' Spamton usually come up with the one of the two excuses: "he's so popular, I'm just sick of him," - which I think is a very silly (albeit innocent) reason, sorry - or "he's not interesting or significant enough in the game to warrant the popularity."
I disagree.
For the record, before I continue, I couldn't give less of a fuck if you don't like him, lmao, you do you, BBG (why are you looking at my blog in the first place? You'll die of vex! I'm a big ol' simp). There are popular characters in other media I also don't like but I don't have the time or energy to go around boasting why I dislike them. Reality is depressing enough, I'd much rather focus on stuff I actually like.
Anyway.
While I do agree that Spamton probably isn't major in terms of the entire canon of Deltarune, I feel like there's so much nuance to him that it's kind of incredible. People seem to forget about the sweepstakes.
I don't need to go into his backstory. We all know about that and it's one of the main draws of him. He's a tragic, relatable, timeless character, and while his popularity will wane while we enjoy the other chapters, I still feel like this fandom will still love and talk about him, much like how the Undertale fandom still loves and fixates on Sans, Papyrus and Mettaton in particular. At least, I will, lol. And this is coming from someone who doesn't get attached to characters easily, at all. Not to this extent.
Anyway, continuing on with the 'nuance, interesting' point:
I've spoken about this before, time and time again, but the fact that Spamton is a direct foil to Kris, knows about souls, knows about how this world works (and is horrified by it) just seems pretty major to me, IDK. That's not even delving into the sweepstakes.
I know the whole interaction between Spamton and Noelle is kind of speculation, so I'm just going off what I've seen and read what other people have discussed in regards to these two here:
The idea that Noelle and Spamton have spoken to one another and have (maybe) discussed Dess (speculatively), is just mind-blowing to me. Dess still has a huge question mark over their head. We don't know anything about them except that they're missing, but the fact that Spamton knows some stuff (speculatively) because of Noelle just... I don't have any words. The fact that Spamton thinks Noelle is the Angel (something we know is important in the lore) is fascinating to me.
Perhaps Spamton is just a stepping stone to what other secret bosses may elaborate on in future chapters. Realistically, that's probably the case.
But Spamton himself and the dynamic between he and Kris will ALWAYS stick with me, no matter how good the other secret bosses are. The Snowgrave Spamton fight has a permanent burn mark in my brain. I will never get the image of Kris being canonically traumatised by this man out of my head.
The fact that Spamton was sort of the first character to reveal the existential horrors that the world of Deltarune entails is remarkable to me. Yes, Jevil sort of did it first, but nowhere near to the extent and depth Spamton did.
Anyway, self-indulgent discussion over. I hope we do see our beloved salesman again (we probably won't, and if we do, it most likely won't be until the end). I know he's just chilling in Kris's pocket right now with Jevil. But I have an image that in Chapter 7, we'll see all the secret bosses again. Maybe.
Maybe we'll get a cutscene sort of like the True Pacifist cutscene at the very end of Undertale, where we see all the monsters enjoying their new lives above ground. Maybe we'll see the secret bosses be happy. Maybe we'll see Jevil reunite with Seam. Maybe we'll see Spamton finally making it as a salesman again, and reconnecting with the Addisons. IDK.
Anyway, can you tell I fucking love Spamton.

DELTARUNE: The Chess Theory v2.0
A popular theory in DELTARUNE is the "Chess Theory", the concept being that the main Dark World villains chapters 1-6 are based off of chess pieces and how they work, from highest to lowest value:
1. The Chess Theory
Infinite Value - King (Chapter 1) - Sits isolated in his castle and only attacks when provoked, has very slow movement.
9 Pawns Value - Queen (Chapter 2) - Is very mobile and goes wherever she wants. Combines the movement of a rook and a bishop, but can't imitate a Knight piece.
These are the confirmed villains, now we move on to theory territory:
3. 5 Pawns Value - Rook (Chapter 3) - Usually appears halfway through. Needs a pawn to move so it can move.
4. 3.5 Pawns Value - Bishop (Chapter 4) - Very mobile and versatile. Usually gets moved right at the start.
5. 3 Pawns Value - Knight (Chapter 5) - Very mobile and can straight-up ignore and jump over other pieces.
6. 1 Pawns Value - Pawn (Chapter 6) - Follows commands, presumably the Vessel(?)
This is the general outline of the chess theory. From here, I will expand on what it started.
First of all, something that absolutely nobody brings up, and it ticks me a lot, is that in chess, there is 1 King and Queen. But there are 2 Rooks, Bishops and Knights. I believe that Chapters 3-5 (which are releasing alongside each other) will have 2 main villains, 2 Rooks, Bishops and most importantly... Knights.
2. The Rooks
Let's start with Chapter 3. I believe that Tenna will be the main villain alongside either Mike, or someone new. A Rookie is a new recruit, an apprentice if you will. Also, "to rook" means to defraud or swindle someone. Therefore, I believe that Tenna will be a former apprentice of Mike, that has defrauded them and took their place as the star of the TV Dark World, a sort of darker version of "the apprentice bests the master". Alongside Tenna, I believe there will be another main villain, another one of Mike's Rookies, possibly a sort of "movie director/writer" character, working behind the scenes while Tenna is the public star. Mike will most probably be hiding somewhere, I believe he will be an ally to the Delta Warriors, and will help to defeat the two Rooks that defrauded him.
3. The Bishops
Continuing, Chapter 4 (which I suspect to be located in the Church) will have 2 Bishops. Now, Chapter 4 is the biggest shot in the dark here, the only information we have on it are the Light World and Castle Town sections from the Status Update. However, we KNOW that it won't be a purely Light World Chapter, because in the most recent newsletter, Toby Fox stated that Chapter 4 will be a much more normal experience gameplay-wise than Chapter 3. We have no idea what 2 Bishops could entail, possibly one being a genuine, righteous, religious Bishop that wants to stop us due to their beliefs, while the other is a lying, evil preacher. Who knows?
4. The Knights - Pawn Promotion
The most interesting part of this theory is the idea of two Knights. I will refer to these 2 Knights as the Roaring Knight, and the New Knight. What is another important thing in chess? Pawn Promotion. In the Snowgrave/Weird Route, Spamton is a pawn that gets promoted to become the Queen, taking over her mansion. I believe, that the same thing will happen in Chapter 5, the main villain will be the Roaring Knight, however, at the very end of the chapter, a New Knight will rise up, Kris Dreemurr.
Chapter 5 will conclude with Kris escaping our (the Player's) grasp, no longer being our Pawn, they will become powerful enough to be the Knight. Chapter 5 will end with us being separated from Kris, and Chapter 6 will begin with us reconnecting with the Vessel.
If you want to learn more about HOW Kris will get stronger and become the Knight, go read my Knight Theory, it should be up now!
5. The Pawn, our Vessel
With Kris breaking free, we are able to finally control our Vessel, taken away from us by an unknown interloper. This theory can branch in two ways: 1. The main villain of this chapter will be either another of many Pawns, maybe December Holiday, trapped wherever the Vessel is situated, a Bunker Dark World I presume. 2. Alternatively, WE could be the main villain of Chapter 6, the 6th Chess Piece, I lean into this more.
Both branches entail that Chapter 7 will reconnect or even reconcile us with Kris!
6. Behavior of the Villains
Both King and Queen behave very similar to their respective chess piece's movement. What would the future villains' behavior be?
The Rooks are most probably going to be preceded by a Lightner, a Pawn that is influenced/controlled by them, most probably Toriel. Rooks only start playing a major role halfway through the chess match, but are the most important pieces when it comes to the end of the match, the Checkmate. They will pack a punch I bet.
The Bishops will appear as soon as the Dark World adventure begins, and will play a vital role throughout the entirety of the Chapter, however they will probably appear less than Queen, and in more serious, noteworthy situations as well.
The Roaring Knight would most probably be very erratic, appearing at unexpected moments, ignoring what blocks their path through force of will. I believe that the Delta Warriors will confront the Knight by cornering them, much like a Knight in chess must be cornered to stop jumping around.
The Pawn will mindlessly follow orders.
5. End
This is it! Sorry if I messed something up, this is my first post on Tumblr! I'm not sure how things work around here, but if you have anything to add to the table or your own interpretation to discuss, feel free to leave a note! Alright that's it. You can scram now.

Today I am contemplating the idea of narrative in Deltarune; more specifically, how the characters' actions in dark worlds seem entirely constrained to an almost-linear sequence of events, and that certain characters (i.e. Ralsei) are not only aware of this overarching in-game Narrative (capitalised to distinguish it from the real-world definition of narrative), but do their utmost to ensure that it is followed and carried out to its endpoint... whatever that might end up looking like.
And then on the other end of that spectrum is Susie, who is probably NOT aware of the Narrative conventions of dark worlds, but will nonetheless do her utmost to derail said Narrative in any way she possibly can. And while we might consider that this makes Susie "free" from the Narrative's confines, it may in fact serve to trap her in an entirely different fashion.
The thing about Susie and Ralsei, in terms of the Narrative, is that they are entirely known quantities - Ralsei can always be trusted to stick to the script, and you can always depend on Susie to deviate from that same script, should an opportunity to do so present itself. And that makes them very predictable... and what can be predicted can be safely contained.
Consider the scene in Chapter 2 where Susie overrides Ralsei's wishes for Kris to choose to accompany one of them by yoinking him down an entirely separate path. In one way, she has subverted the Narrative that Ralsei has tried to present - that Kris must choose somebody to accompany them on their path. But in many other ways, she's played entirely into the Narrative by doing what she could reliably be depended upon to do - which is to override a choice presented to us/Kris and choose a third option.
Because doing that is what enables Kris and Noelle to spend time alone together and begin to reconnect as friends, and is ultimately what begins Noelle's journey towards being more reassured and confident in herself... culminating in the Narrative climax of standing up to Giga Queen at the end of the chapter.
Perhaps this would have happened regardless, had you/Kris been able to choose to accompany Susie or Ralsei as seemed to be initially intended. But it does highlight that Susie's little rebellions against the Narrative conventions of the dark world have already been accounted for, and can in fact help further that Narrative rather than subvert it.
The only way that the Narrative can be effectively derailed is through very specific and subtle actions that we, the players, can perform. Because while we are participating in that Narrative, we are not beholden to it as the in-game characters are. And considering that doing such things results in Snowgrave... perhaps it's not the best idea to attempt to defy that Narrative.
TL:DR - Everyone in Deltarune is doomed by the Narrative - even and especially Susie.

i get why people ship kris and susie kris definitely likes her a lot even before they were actually friends and susie was actively bullying them which is a really interesting thing that i dont see people mention much but either way i also get why people ship kris with noelle instead because childhood friends to lovers trope plus the way their families were close but some shit happened and now they arent but they start to reconnect more anyway but like can i be honest. i dont really care about deltarune shipping at all. its fine. the only one i actively hate is kris x ralsei but other than that i genuinely couldnt care less
