Another artist that will be featured in #COMMALTSHIFT curated by #LarryOsseiMensah & #DexterWimberly opening Saturday-July 22nd at @aljiraart (2pm -5pm) - Delphine Fawundu is a New York City based multi-media visual artist whose work examines the theory of social constructivism within the development of identity. With this concept in mind, her art investigates the impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Colonialism on social constructs including race, gender and class. Her art appropriates representations of Blackness and African ethnicities while disrupting stagnant ideas about these identities. It queries the fine line between intrinsic identities and the identities evolved from social, political and nationalistic influences. Fawundu’s the cleanse, an intense yet meditative work, appropriates text from a variety of sources including authors Ntozake Shange, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and James Baldwin, as well as The Holy Bible and The Holy Quran. Rodrigo Valenzuela’s Prole probes the working-class mindset, depicting a once unified factory soccer team that has gone on strike – their problems exacerbated by a mix of office politics, game misunderstandings, and personal issues. Join us for the opening reception of #COMMALTSHIFT SATURDAY, JULY 22, from 2–5pm! ---------------------------------------------------- Image: The African Dream? So glad I went to the #onbeingblack exhibition at #arnikadawkinsgallery . I met @shepreebright and #delphinefawundu who gave me great insight on the state of the world today, as well as how to create meaningful art. I also met #arnikadawkins herself and #deborahwillis . I was just so glad to meet people who look like me being photographers.

🎨📷#ArtIsAWeapon 📣#NewExhibit @adamadelphine Adama Delphine Fawundu: The Sacred Star of Isis March 14 - April 6, 2019 at @crushcuratorial 526 W 26th Street, #NYC. ____________________ "Crush Curatorial is delighted to announce Adama Delphine Fawundu: The Sacred Star of Isis, a solo exhibition. In this newly-conceived body of work, the artist takes the ancient West African deity, Mami Wata, as a departure point and builds on her engagement with her Mende heritage of Sierra Leone. Linking known and under-recognized geographies of the African diaspora, Ms. Fawundu’s work upends national and temporal borders, invoking interconnectivity and transformation across cultural and environmental thresholds... 'Adama Delphine Fawundu’s work is about finding ways to connect with her kin - a group not merely confined to those who share a direct common ancestor but an expansive definition inclusive of the many who descend from the dispersed, the stolen, those for whom the violence, and opportunity wrought by the sea is at once a spectre and a fact of everyday life,' writes scholar Niama Safia Sandy." - www.crush-curatorial.com/the-sacred-star-of-isis Image: Adama Delphine Fawundu, “Black Like Blue in Argentina,” 2018, Archival pigment print on canvas. . . . #adamadelphinefawundu #delphinefawundu #thesacredstarofisis #identity #culture #kin #BlackArtists #photography #mixedmedia #video #BlackWomenArtists #AfricanArtists #TraScapades #ArtAndTheCity #BlackGirlArtGeeks🤓 #ArtIsAWeapon (at CRUSH Curatorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvMsWnpFFxw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=lqivhly21qh7
