I've laid out the basics of my life's current plot, as an introduction to my journals, or blog, or whatever you want to call it.

It is the last day of Pride Month 2024, and I am eager to create, having turned twenty a month ago, and one course away from finishing community college later this summer, I find myself at an evolving stage in my young life, where I’d soon have to figure out what I wanted to do with it. Before today, I had spent a week at Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, taking in the sun, and praying to the sea. Most importantly, I had spent the week reading Patti Smith’s “Just Kids” while lying in the sand, underneath the sun, listening to the ocean waves closely, all as I admired Patti’s words. Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith’s lives fascinated me, their love for art, for one another, and poetry moved me more than most other books I’ve read, for Patti’s story starts with the summer she was twenty, and her pursuit for freedom and her vow to make something of herself resonated deep within me, impulsing me to come home and write, after months of not having drawn, or painted, or sculpted, or collaged under a professor’s wing, I’d seek refuge from artistic drought in my own words, my own thoughts, typed out for others to read. 

A lot in my life this past week has felt both revitalizing and eye-opening, after maybe getting too used to seeing everything as transitory, fleeting memories dear to me which I hugged and begged to never disappear for my own sanity. When I was away I would text my great-friend Chloe every night and day, she had traveled to Korea the same week I was at Rehoboth, we were thirteen hours apart, during my mornings she’d recap me on the day she had before she fell asleep, and at night I’d tell her about my day as she woke up. Chloe and I are always in sync, somehow always going through similar events in our own lives, yet living far from each other. I don’t know if it’s because we’re both Air Suns with Virgo moons or just coincidently similar.  When she comes back to Maryland in May after being in Toronto for school we pick up right where we had left off when she came back for Christmas, and in December we’d pick up where we left off in August. We have mastered this routine for two years now, always in contact, always honest, and always learning from each other's similar experiences whenever we’d debrief. It was almost as if we’d always be the two sixteen-year-olds who played video games religiously while stuck at home during the pandemic, always apart but never drifting or misunderstood. 

During the middle of my stay in Delaware, my friends, Val and Benji came to visit me for the day. I’ve known Val since we were thirteen and obsessed with K-pop, our friendship has already been cemented by years of knowing each other’s best and worst sides of one another, she’s like a sister to me or someone I would’ve married if I were straight because I knew I needed her as a lifelong companion. I sometimes picture us at eighty, gossiping about people we knew from middle school and high school. “You’re like family” we’d often say to each other.  Benji, like Val, is a graphic artist and designer who was introduced to me by a crazy man last spring, little did I know back then that he’d become one of my best friends and teacher. Benji is almost my complete opposite, in aesthetics, artistic interests, and ideologies, yet we mirrored each other quite well. Almost a year into our friendship, Val and Benji started dating, something I had predicted happening months prior, watching their friendship transform into what they now have has been incredibly dear to me and has taught me so many things about love, I feel lucky to have witnessed such a great love blossom from the very beginning, back when I could tell Benji like Val. I remember thinking how crazy and sweet it was watching my best friends who I spent every day with start falling in love with each other, and now they’re the couple who visits me and my family at the beach, “we’re family” I’d think in my head. I’ll forever hold on tight to the memory of us at the beach, something about it felt like a story you tell your kids, it was also a day I realized I would never be alone no matter how much I told myself I probably would end up alone, if I had them as friends I would never feel alone, even if we were in different parts of the world, the same can be said for Chloe as well.

I often think about how I’d never do everything I wanted to, could I? Could I learn every language, see every country, watch every movie, read every book, love everyone, have ten different careers? Could I also live a slow simple life with a husband and child, in which I’d commit to art and creation? Was it too pessimistic to think all the figs will rot away? Indecision has paralyzed me for so long, but I find comfort in knowing my potential is great, and unlike Sylvia Plath, I knew that every year the fig tree will bloom fresh and soft figs again, ripe for the taking. This fall I’ll be taking a gap semester, for I found myself faced with financial setbacks, but also indecisive and uncommitted to the idea of going to art school in Baltimore. The thought of not going to school from September to December scares me, will I be content just working at my service job? Maybe all this time would give me a chance to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I picture myself in January of 2025, having already figured everything out, at a good university, being an artist.

 I always crave artistic community, but it is hard to find, I thought I had come close to it at a Fashion Club I was a part of for my two years at community college, but no real community derived from it, besides the five-ish friends who I gained from being there, I thought of everyone else there as an unorganized bunch with good style, people who knew where to shop and how to wear garments but didn’t carry any depth to them, twenty-year-olds with substance addictions, and no real appreciation for the freedom that comes with self-expression, however, they all looked good in pictures and I’d have to be thankful for the fact it was entertaining having them around. Would I need art school to be an artist? At the moment I am content with the artists in my life, Val, Benji, and my friend who I call Panini, whose music means everything to him, and I always find myself in awe of his passion for it. I hope one day we all wake up to our dream lives as artists and never stop creating, for that is my worst fear. 

It took sunburn, saltwater, and Patti Smith to help me realize how much more I could be doing, and how I had to stop pondering, and just act on it. I’m not the type to go to church every Sunday, but in Catholic tradition, dreams are more than mere subconscious thoughts; perhaps they are potentially sacred encounters and sources of divine inspiration. I’ve always thought they play a role in understanding one's purpose, discerning God's will, and finding the courage to follow a path that leads to personal betterment and that of the world. Following one's dreams, in this context, I would hope to maybe align myself with God's greater plan and live a life of meaningful purpose, love, and dedication. This was revealed to me at the beach, as I fixated on the moon’s relationship with the ocean, and how clear it was that their eternal, rhythmic dance had always been a symbol of gentle yet powerful connection to me, something that could make me want to go to church because I’d get to thank God for having placed this creation in front of me to look at whenever I wanted to feel transformed by the gravitational pull of the world around me. Now whenever I take a risk, and work on my art or writing, I’d think of how neither the moon nor God have ever failed me, so why would I live in fear of failing…

AND NOT TO MENTION, back in january pennsylvania academy of fine arts, an art school a few blocks from uarts, announced they would stop offering degrees at the end of this school year. The same for delaware college of art and design, which announced the end of their degree program last week.

But both of them announced their closure months in advance of the final date, allowing students to continue with their studies til the end of the academic year. U arts did nothing like that. U arts was set to absorb students from both these institutions and even continued receiving applications while the board was apparently planning to close the school. I know of at least student who came from pafa to uarts (but theres certainly more). imagine trying to focus on your studies and your schools keep shutting down.

This is the second art school to close in philly this year. Thats half the art schools in the city gone. Im afraid of what this means for the art scene of the city, and what it means for the continued existence of art ed.

The situation with uarts is becoming such a trainwreck but i cant look away. Even if ur not from philly i recommend reading about it since its honestly unbelievable. They announced they were closing the school for good 1 week before the date. 1 week of notice! Students and faculty literally found out their school was closing from an inquirer article. A bunch of students have already paid their tuition for the fall and now are not sure where theyre going to be. And faculty has no idea when theyre going to get their final paychecks or how long their benefits are going to last.

In the five days since they announced the closure the president has stepped down, they cancelled a town hall ten minutes before it was supposed to start, the faculty has filed a class action lawsuit, and another university down the street has propositioned a merger which the mayor and the governer have gotten invloved with. Every day something crazy happens. And theres two days left til the school officially closes.

phewwww I dreamt I was exploring an old house I had just moved into. I apparently had moved someplace semi-rural again, but for college (grad school?) this time. I was reading a magazine cover to cover for a santa fe arts market, but I wasn't in the southwest, though I'd apparently been there recently enough to regret missing cutoff dates for art sales, giveaways, and events.

I found out I was only a few hours' drive away from near where I used to live in PA— and found out the dingman's ferry bridge had been bought out by the owner of a lone starbucks that had set up in town, and local people weren't happy, because he was letting the bridge fall into ill repair... I haven't thought about that bridge since around 2003, it crosses the delaware river & is scary on a good day, so I get the sentiment. I decided to drive up & hit a shopping plaza, and it was full of shut-down stores, places that had been built, opened, and died all in the time between me leaving PA & coming back. the goodwill was open & HUGE, though, so I went in & was looking around. found a mirror designed to look like a half unrolled canister of film, a gold holo glitter polaroid camera that had a kaleidoscope & bug eye shifting effect camera lens, an old speaker setup, and several used comic-book coloring books.

I went to my (in-person?!) class, which was in an oooold victorian-style converted house/schoolroom. the class had used to been based around some sort of creative (writing?) exercises, but the professor shifted the curriculum unit really fast to go over historical timelines of whatever artists' or authors' lives we had been supposed to be learning about all along.

then we covered an opinion piece around coronavirus up in rural new england & in appalachia near the canadian border— the author used historical cold-weather wear as "evidence" that working women of the northeast had always covered their mouths & noses outdoors, and that global warming went hand in hand with both "loosening" those standards, and men "co-opting women's work" such as land surveying & the pony express. and I was like, that doesn't... sound right... but I can't just say "source: I'm from massachusetts hashtag this mf LYING" to say this isn't true.

then the professor opened it up to the class for comment, so I started talking about infection rates & ICU shortages, reinfection, the fact that vaccines won't be ready in time to "save" us before the first hard freeze of the season aka next month, esp if anyone thinks a scarf worn for comfort over your face is an adequate replacement for a medical/safety mask, and that if people continue not to take the current coronavirus pandemic seriously, if & when it mutates before we get viral infection rates down as a baseline, we will be unprepared to do anything but face an exponentially worse second pandemic before the first ends.

and the prof was like, "hmm" bc she wanted us to comment more on the gendered-historical aspect of that nonsense article instead & I'd sorta killed the vibe by not accepting the white frontierswoman fantasy at face value, but like. don't call on me then lmao! and I thought, "oh I wish I was in santa fe rn with my cool tiny film mirror & sparkly polaroid camera," and then I woke up.

The Queens Museum

The Queens Museum of Art is located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in the NYC borough of Queens. Through its presentation of art exhibitions and public and educational programs, this museum works to promote an appreciation for the many diverse cultures that comprise NYC’s urban communities. While children under the age of 18 are admitted free, as are all NYC college students with a valid ID, there is a standard admission fee of $8.00 per adult. This admission allows visitors to not only experience the museum’s wide variety of permanent exhibitions, but also take part in a multitude of continually changing exhibitions and programs.

The “Panorama of the City of New York” is the highlight of the museum’s permanent exhibitions. Commissioned for the 1964 World’s Fair by Robert Moses, a public official and innovative builder in New York City during the mid-20th century, this sprawling architectural model was one of the most popular attractions as it provided fair goers with an aerial view of the city and its encompassing boroughs. Periodic architectural updates have ensured that this model is fairly current and today it includes every building that existed in all five of NYC’s boroughs before 1992. Designed in 273 separate sections, the Panorama’s construction contains a total of 895,000 individual structures and over 100 bridges! Every park and city street are also depicted in the model, as are special features such as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and Yankee Stadium. Surprisingly, because the Panorama has not been updated since 1992, model replicas of the Twin Towers can also be seen, although there is every intention of replacing them with the new buildings that will adorn the site once construction in this area is completed.

Another exhibit entitled “Relief Map of the New York City Water Supply System” details the complexities involved in providing drinking water to all those who call the city their home. Built for the 1939 World’s Fair, this 27-piece model was designed to educate fair goers about NYC’s water system. It traces the city’s water supply from the tributaries of the Delaware River to the watershed of Nassau County and depicts the many aqueducts, reservoirs, and drainage basins that contribute to the city’s water supply. In addition to this 540 square foot structure, historical photographs documenting the construction of the city’s water supply are displayed throughout the exhibit to reveal the enormous amounts of manpower and skill that was needed to engineer such a system.

On the second floor of the museum visitors can find an entire exhibit dedicated to the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs. As the Queen’s Museum building served as the city’s official pavilion during both events, it is only fitting that it now house and display those objects that were once part of these celebrations. Entitled “World’s Fair Visible Storage,” this exhibit contains over 10,000 souvenirs, memorabilia, and give away items from each fair. Commemorative plates, glasses, toys, souvenir coins, dinosaur figures, and other objects are encased within glass and are interesting to look at, as is the large model of the pavilion located in a bubble-top display in the middle of the room.

In one of the newer wings of the museum visitors can explore the “Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass,” a one-of-a-kind archive of lamps, windows, and metalwork from the famed Tiffany Studios. Founded by Egon and Hildegard Neustadt, early collectors of Tiffany glass, this exhibit showcases a multitude of leaded glass designs in a broad array of floral, geometric, landscape, and figural patterns. It also features samples of each type, color, and pattern of glass used by Tiffany Studios in their creations throughout the years. Period photos of the workshop and a film presentation on the process involved in the making of leaded glass not only provide museum goers with historical information about Tiffany Studios but are also apropos since their workshops were once located in Corona, Queens.

Available at the Queen’s Museum from October 6- February 16, 2020 is a temporary exhibit entitled “Nicholas Moufarrege: Recognize My Sign.” Moufarrege, a contemporary artist, mixed Classical and Baroque elements with Pop Art, comic book characters, Arabic calligraphy, and Islamic tile work to create embroidered paintings. This unique form of art reveals the many eastern and western influences on the artist’s life and provided a fresh and exciting means for the blending of the two.

Also temporarily available from October 6- February 16, 2020 is the museum’s Pia Camil exhibit. Entitled “Fade into Black: Sit, Chill, Look, Talk, Roll, Play, Listen, Give, Take, Dance, Share,” this exhibit is an artistic commentary on global consumerism. Using recycled textiles, Pia Camil reflects on the production and distribution of such consumer goods as t-shirts and jeans in a unique and interesting manner. In her Bluejeanando project on display in the museum, denim jeans are stuffed and sewn together in pairs to form body pillows that are arranged into piles on the floor of the exhibit space. In “Fade into Black,” hundreds of t-shirts with different logos are sewn together to form a single, massive curtain. Visitors are encouraged to lounge on the stuffed jean sculptures and reflect on how consumer goods are often made in poorer Latin American countries and then shipped to the US where they are sold, worn, and then discarded by their purchasers, only to resurface in the countries where they were originally produced to be re-sold in second-hand markets to individuals who have no cultural affinity for their labels or logos.

Housed in a historic NYC building, the Queen’s Museum features many worthy exhibitions for visitors to see. Smaller than some of the city’s other museums, a visitor can experience all that this museum has to offer in a single day. The museum is very beautiful- its clean lines and bright, open spaces really showcase the art that is on display. While the highlight of the museum is its Panorama of the city, I found this season’s temporary exhibits to be the most interesting and thought provoking. Although the Queen’s Museum doesn’t have the reputation or allure of the MET or MOMA, it is definitely worth a visit if you happen to be in the borough of Queens.

ON HER WORK:

My artwork typically examines forms of damage and deterioration, referencing both cloth and skin, in order to consider how markings and histories compile over time. Presently, I am exploring what I personally feel the expectation to take on certain responsibilities and roles within my opposite sex relationship (especially within a shared domestic space). I hope to continue to explore these ideas while at Print Camp this summer.

 Currently, I am working through plans for a series prints that examine assumed roles for women within marriage and the weight that historical expectations carry. My intention is to juxtapose etchings against the screenprints in order to compare the past and present. Clothing will become a metaphor for the past, specifically employing lace as a reference to wedding dresses and the restraints that came with taking on the role of being a wife. The clothing will be etched onto shape copper plates, each shape determined by the outline of a section of the wedding gown. The impression of the copper plate will be printed upon loose images of women (monotypes), the weight + plate impression acting as a mechanical and binding force upon the body. Alternatively, the silkscreen prints will be a representation of women in the role of wife or domestic partner presently. These will consist of numerous layers of one singular image printed multiple times atop one another, until the silkscreen ink becomes raised off the surface. The images will depict the female body after a piece of binding clothing has been removed, an embossment occurring where the cloth has pinched and pulled at the skin leaving an impression. The silkscreen prints will ultimately become intaglio surfaces with indentations where the raw paper is exposed. Finally, I will coat the screenprints with pigmented wax medium forcing it into the grooves created by the (lack of) ink, highlighting the absence left by the clothing. When the series are finished, they will read as a reflection on how the historical residue of domestic roles still resides (and perhaps will always reside) within a marriage, even after the restrictive and binding conventions have been cast off. This residue and weight frequently still ties women back to more traditional roles within relationships even in contemporary society.

 SKILLSHARE: PPT demo on blow out techniques in papermaking. This is a technique in which a stencil is placed on top of a fresh sheet of paper and a hose is used to mist away the pulp that is not protected by the design of the stencil.

Choosing A Career In Graphic Designing

Graphic designing is the visual presentation of ideas. Graphic designing is used to design advertisements for newspapers, magazines and product packaging. It is also used to design web pages and T-Shirts. Graphic designers are used to make advertisements and labels for products that are appealing and easy to understand by consumers. The field of graphic designing is continuously growing and if you are a creative person and bursting with visual ideas you should consider a career in this field.

If you are a person that starts thinking about the creative process every time you see an advertisement? Are you interested in designing websites that stand out? Do you enjoy reading comics and admiring the artwork? Then you should consider entering the field of graphic design.

If you fall into any of the above categories and want to be a creative of society then you should consider this line of work. You can start by enrolling for a Bachelors degree in arts or design. This could be a proper degree or a two year course. This is no to say you will not get a job if you have the skills.
