Sarah’s Funeral - An Excerpt

He stares down at the grave, at the little white casket in the newly disturbed dirt. The casket has a viewing window, but his mother had it packed full of flowers to obscure Sarah’s face.

“We don’t need more of them seeing her,” she had said. She ordered the cheapest flowers, and most of them were half wilted by the time they had been laid into the casket.

Ephraim would know. He watched as they were placed inside, and he stood by as the lid was closed and fastened, and he watched as it was carried out to the ground. The grave itself was on hospital property. For all his family’s riches, they were laying their only daughter to rest in a pauper’s grave in an empty field. Her only company were the graves of the other patients who had remained unclaimed or unwanted.

Advice/hard truths for writers?

The best piece of practical advice I know is a classic from Hemingway (qtd. here):

The most important thing I’ve learned about writing is never write too much at a time… Never pump yourself dry. Leave a little for the next day. The main thing is to know when to stop. Don’t wait till you’ve written yourself out. When you’re still going good and you come to an interesting place and you know what’s going to happen next, that’s the time to stop. Then leave it alone and don’t think about it; let your subconscious mind do the work.

Also, especially if you're young, you should read more than you write. If you're serious about writing, you'll want to write more than you read when you get old; you need, then, to lay the important books as your foundation early. I like this passage from Samuel R. Delany's "Some Advice for the Intermediate and Advanced Creative Writing Student" (collected in both Shorter Views and About Writing):

You need to read Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert, and Zola; you need to read Austen, Thackeray, the Brontes, Dickens, George Eliot, and Hardy; you need to read Hawthorne, Melville, James, Woolf, Joyce, and Faulkner; you need to read Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Turgenev, Goncherov, Gogol, Bely, Khlebnikov, and Flaubert; you need to read Stephen Crane, Mark Twain, Edward Dahlberg, John Steinbeck, Jean Rhys, Glenway Wescott, John O'Hara, James Gould Cozzens, Angus Wilson, Patrick White, Alexander Trocchi, Iris Murdoch, Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, Anthony Powell, Vladimir Nabokov; you need to read Nella Larsen, Knut Hamsun, Edwin Demby, Saul Bellow, Lawrence Durrell, John Updike, John Barth, Philip Roth, Coleman Dowell, William Gaddis, William Gass, Marguerite Young, Thomas Pynchon, Paul West, Bertha Harris, Melvin Dixon, Daryll Pinckney, Darryl Ponicsan, and John Keene, Jr.; you need to read Thomas M. Note: I haven't read every single writer on that list; there are even three I've literally never heard of; I can think of others I'd recommend in place of some he's cited; but still, his general point—that you need to read the major and minor classics—is correct.

The best piece of general advice I know, and not only about writing, comes from Dr. Johnson, The Rambler #63:

The traveller that resolutely follows a rough and winding path, will sooner reach the end of his journey, than he that is always changing his direction, and wastes the hours of day-light in looking for smoother ground and shorter passages.

I've known too many young writers over the years who sabotaged themselves by overthinking and therefore never finishing or sharing their projects; this stems, I assume, from a lack of self-trust or, more grandly, trust in the universe (the Muses, God, etc.). But what professors always tell Ph.D. students about dissertations is also true of novels, stories, poems, plays, comic books, screenplays, etc: There are only two kinds of dissertations—finished and unfinished. Relatedly, this is the age of online—an age when 20th-century institutions are collapsing, and 21st-century ones have not yet been invented. Unless you have serious connections in New York or Iowa, publish your work yourself and don't bother with the gatekeepers.

Other than the above, I find most writing advice useless because over-generalized or else stemming from arbitrary culture-specific or field-specific biases, e.g., Orwell's extremely English and extremely journalistic strictures, not necessarily germane to the non-English or non-journalistic writer. "Don't use adverbs," they always say. Why the hell shouldn't I? It's absurd. "Show, don't tell," they insist. Fine for the aforementioned Orwell and Hemingway, but irrelevant to Edith Wharton and Thomas Mann. Freytag's Pyramid? Spare me. Every new book is a leap in the dark. Your project may be singular; you may need to make your own map as your traverse the unexplored territory.

Hard truths? There's one. I know it's a hard truth because I hesitate even to type it. It will insult our faith in egalitarianism and the rewards of earnest labor. And yet, I suspect the hard truth is this: ineffables like inspiration and genius count for a lot. If they didn't, if application were all it took, then everybody would write works of genius all day long. But even the greatest geniuses usually only got the gift of one or two all-time great work. This doesn't have to be a counsel of despair, though: you can always try to place yourself wherever you think lightning is likeliest to strike. That's what I do, anyway. Good luck!

 Chapter One

 Seven years ago

Delanie Clark stroked the dark wood footboard of the large sleigh bed in the bedroom of the rustic two-room mountain cabin at Clearmount Retreat. Should she greet Aiden Kingman wearing the lingerie set she’d picked out last week at the mall while thinking of him . . . or nothing at all?

She walked to the side of the bed and dropped her green backpack on top of the blue comforter. She’d let him discover her naked . . . in the hot tub. A smile she couldn’t stop bloomed on her face. That was the perfect place to wait for him and escape the chilly autumn night.

Finally, it was Friday. She’d hardly been able to concentrate during her classes at the University of Kentucky because he’d stayed on her mind. Since he’d called on Wednesday to tell her he was definitely flying in from Maryland for the weekend, the days had crept by at a snail’s pace and so had the five-hour drive earlier from Lexington. It seemed like an eternity since she’d last seen him, instead of just one week.

Delanie took off her brown hiking boots and socks, along with her tan wool sweater, jeans, and underwear. She stuffed her clothes into the pack, stowed everything in the closet behind her, then hurried into the corner bathroom for a towel. When she came back out, she dimmed the brass lamp on the bedside table.

Moonlight shining through the sliding glass door across from her gave the simply furnished room a romantic glow. The smell of the oak logs stacked inside the fireplace built into the wall near the foot of the bed lingered with the clean, earthy scent of the space.

While she was growing up and living on the retreat property, one of the jobs her father assigned to her had been filling the kindling boxes and stocking wood in the cabins. She used to imagine the guests enjoying warm drinks in front of their fireplaces, thoroughly mesmerized by the orange and amber flames curling and flickering over the logs.

Later on, she and Aiden would lie in bed, watching their own fire slowly burn to embers. For once, they could fall asleep in each other’s arms and wake up together in the morning, like a normal couple, and share breakfast. Her dad was on a fishing trip until late Sunday. For the first time, she wouldn’t have to sneak back down the trail into the family living quarters she shared with him before dawn. More importantly, Aiden’s concern about them seeing each other as a conflict of interest while he negotiated to buy Clearmount from her father no longer existed. The papers had been signed yesterday, selling the property to Aiden’s family company, TriRoyal Incorporated. They’d take over ownership of her dad’s thirty-acre retreat next month, and she and Aiden were finally free to share about their relationship.

Delanie hurried out the sliding door into the wood-framed, glass-enclosed deck and shut it behind her. Moonlight illuminated the steam rising from the sunken hot tub on the right. The mountains in the distance and the gently swaying trees surrounding her added to the peaceful ambiance.

She dropped the towel on the deck, twisted her long, dark hair into a loose topknot, then slipped into the rippling water. The stress from studying and agonizing over the economics exam she’d ultimately aced that afternoon melted away as she leaned back and closed her eyes.

Would Aiden have more of TriRoyal’s modernization plans to show her? What he’d shared so far was fantastic. Redwood-and-stone cottages would replace the well-used wood cabins that were currently on the property. Picture windows would provide views of the lake, trees, and mountains.

Delanie’s heart accelerated as she recalled Aiden sitting across from her a week ago in the hot tub, telling her about his plans. His slicked-back dark hair had emphasized the chiseled angles of his gorgeous face.

“Not only are we building larger decks on the cottages, we’re also installing bigger hot tubs.” He’d shot her a lazy grin. “You and I will definitely take advantage of them when we visit the new and improved Clearmount Retreat next fall.”

“I like that idea, a lot.” She hadn’t been able to stop herself from returning his smile. “But I wouldn’t mind if you took advantage of me now.”

“Come over here and I will.”

“Uh-uh.” She’d crooked her finger at him. “You come here.”

As he’d stood and approached her, water had trailed down his defined pecs and abs. The gleam in his hazel-brown eyes and the erection rising high on his abdomen had promised her one thing—earth-shattering orgasms.

“Are you mine?”

That’s what he’d asked her in bed later on as he’d kissed her along her left leg, from her toes to her inner thigh. He’d started all over again with her other leg. Each brush of his lips inching nearer to her sex had taunted and teased her.

“Answer me, Delanie.”

She’d tried to respond, but his tongue feathering over her clit and a back-arching climax had taken away her ability to form words. His length gliding slowly inside of her and pulling out at an equally tortuous pace had captivated her. With each successive, deep stroke that followed, yes not only became her answer but a plea for more pleasure. And Aiden had delivered.

Infused with the warmth of remembered bliss, Delanie sank deeper into the water. What they shared was . . . perfect.

But her dad would be surprised to hear she and Aiden were in a relationship, and that they were going to keep seeing each other. He’d asked her not to become serious with anyone until after she’d turned twenty-one. She’d only missed the mark by six months, and her father did like Aiden. At twenty-four, Aiden was already an acquisitions negotiator for his father’s company. He understood the importance of responsibility and would support her making college her main priority over him. It wasn’t like they were planning to get married or anything. Surely, her father would understand why she’d kept it a secret until now. She and Aiden had happily and unexpectedly fallen in love—and she hadn’t wanted that to disrupt his business dealings.

A man’s voice coming from inside the cabin, clearly on the phone, broke into her thoughts.

Aiden? Her heart drummed in her chest as she listened closely. No . . . not Aiden. Gerard Kingman. Shit!

Just as she shrank back into the shadows, a stream of light came from the bedroom. Aiden’s tall, black-haired father opened the sliding door and strode into the enclosure, talking on his cell.

“I don’t care what it takes. Just do it. No more delays.” Gerard unknotted the maroon tie from the collar of his white dress shirt and stuffed it in the pocket of the charcoal overcoat that melded perfectly with his dark suit. With his back turned to Delanie, he moved toward the stairs at the other end of the deck.

The temperature seemed to creep up with the warmth flushing into her cheeks. She couldn’t let him find her bare-ass naked in the tub. If he came closer, she could dunk herself under the water. She’d rather drown than have him discover her.

“I don’t give a damn if they mow down the place, cement over the lake, and build a parking lot on top of it as long as the papers are signed. Get it done.”

Mow down the place? Parking lot? What was he talking about?

She heard the front door slam shut.

“Dad, where are you?” Aiden’s bellow reverberated. The solid thunk of his shoes became louder when he entered the bedroom. Delanie watched him storm out onto the deck and advance on his father while she tried to shrink back into the shadows farther still. “What the fuck did you do?”

Gerard slipped his phone into his pocket. “That’s none of your concern.”

“None of my concern?” Aiden’s muscles bunched and released underneath his navy sweater and jeans. “You working a side negotiation with the outlet mall developers on my deal damn well qualifies as my concern.”

Side negotiation? No. They weren’t talking about Clearmount. They couldn’t be.

“First, you work for me, not the other way around.” Gerard’s tone grew implacable. “Second, this is about business and has nothing to do with whether or not you can bang the property owner’s daughter with a clear conscience.”

“Leave Delanie out of this.”

“I didn’t bring her into it.” Gerard pointed at Aiden. “You did. I must admit, it was a smart move getting Delanie on your side. She was a big influence in swaying Bryan Clark to come to the negotiating table. He signed the deal. We own the property. It’s mine to sell. The mall developers are happily going to pay my asking price.”

“Clearmount is my project.���

“That has nothing to do with it. Because of my decision, we made money. Everybody got what they wanted. That’s how it works.”

“It wasn’t your call. This was my acquisition.” Aiden raked back his hair with both hands. “I should have been the one handling negotiations, not you.”

Delanie’s heart thumped so hard it felt as if her breastbone would shatter. “No!” Water sloshed in her face as she surged forward in the tub and into the light. Disbelief made her tremble more than the cold as she crossed her arms, covering her chest. “You promised my father you would preserve Clearmount as a retreat. Aiden—you showed me the renovation plans.”

Gerard’s dismissive look replaced the heat in the water with a chill. He turned to Aiden, blatantly ignoring her. “We’re flying out to our property in Denver tonight. Productivity at the hotel there is low, complaints are high, and since no one else seems to be able to solve the problem, we’re going to fix it. You’re riding in the town car with me to the airport. You can make arrangements for the car company to pick up your rental before we take off. Hurry up and deal with her. We don’t have all night.” He strode into the cabin.

Delanie looked to Aiden. “What’s going on?”

He snagged the towel from the deck. “You’re shivering.”

She took Aiden’s hand and he pulled her out of the tub, but he didn’t meet her gaze.

Hot and cold prickles dripped down her spine with the water puddling at her feet. “Is it true?”

He tucked the towel around her. “Let’s go inside.”

“Answer me!” The force of the words burned her throat. “Did you sell Clearmount to outlet mall developers?”

“It’s not that simple.”

“It was simple enough for you to fuck me so I’d vouch for you to my father.”

Aiden’s jawline angled as he gripped her shoulders. “It’s not like that.”

“Isn’t it? Like your father said, you got what you wanted. Right?”

His silence filled in the gaps.

He’d used her. How could she have been so stupid? She’d fallen for him but he hadn’t loved her at all. Anger and hurt washed over Delanie. She wrenched out of Aiden’s grasp. “Get away from me. I never want to see you again.”

The Bellows Book - Ethel’s Resignation (Sneak Peek)

I’m so excited to share this one with you all! It’s been in my drafts for months and I finally got around to polishing it up tonight. Obviously it will be much longer than this once it’s fully finished, but here’s a nice teaser for the full chapter. This contains MANY illusions to other parts of The Bellows Book, so don’t be alarmed if some references make no sense at this point. I promise that everything will fall into place once I can get more content ready for publishing. Time has just been a huge problem now, especially because my college classes have recently gotten very intense and I spend almost all of my time writing academic papers these days.

Ephraim was being a coward, and he knew it. Rather than facing Ethel like he knew he ought to, he was hiding away in his room like a scared child. His father and brother were both at work at the mill, and Delanie was off making social calls with Gertrude. Surprisingly, his grandmother could be quite social when she wanted to be.

Sliding his feet off of his bed, he moved to his window once more, just in time to spot Ethel doubled over in some sort of fit. He opened the window slightly and was greeted with the sounds of a hacking cough, followed by a clearing of the throat. As Ethel began her walk down the driveway, he noticed that even her footsteps appeared weak. She plodded along slowly through the snow, nearly tripping a handful of times.

Ephraim wanted to help her. He wanted to rush out of the mansion and take her by the arm and help her home. He didn’t care that it would involve seeing Ruth again, or that it would certainly damage his reputation beyond repair when the world discovered what Ethel had learned. Why she hadn’t told them yet, he didn’t know.

He watched as she reached the end of the path, and then slowly made the turn onto the road back towards town. Another thought of concern flashed through his mind before he pushed it aside.

No! He thought. She’s tainted. She carries it - that curse - in her blood!

He turned around, his back pressed against the velvet of the curtains. He thought of Ethel, and of everything that could have been, of what might have happened if he hadn’t-

NO!

No! No! No!

Sometimes he feels as though he ought to beat himself in the head to push away his thoughts. This is one of those times.

He stood there for a while longer, listening to the ticking of the clock and the chirping of the few birds who braved the snow.

They reminded him of her, braving the snow in an attempt to bring something good to the bleak of winter.

He wanted to beat the thoughts away again.

Finally, once he was fully satisfied that Ethel was gone, he moved downstairs to retrieve the package she had left. Placing it on the foyer table, he carefully opened it. First there was a gingham tea towel, followed by a small batch of sweets and a few canned goods. At the bottom of the basket lay an envelope full of patient files, and a note in Ethel’s writing. Abandoning the basket and the food, Ephraim ascended the stairs with papers in hand.

As he reached the top of the stairs, he glanced back towards the kitchen, towards Sarah’s room. No, he thought. Now is not the time to dwell on old sins.

Slipping back into his bedroom, he slowly closed the door behind himself and moved towards his desk. He placed the files unceremoniously atop a pile of medical books and began to read Ethel’s letter.

To Whom It May Concern,

          Regarding my employment at Pennhurst State Hospital —

Resignation.

Ephraim wanted to scream, to throw something, to reach for his belt to have a go at Sarah-

No!

No, that’s what started all of this to begin with!

Shut up! 

No!

You murdered her!

It’s your fault that Ethel hates you!

She would have loved you, and you ruined it!

She couldn’t have loved me.

Ephraim was ripped away from his thoughts by the sound of the front door slamming open. Judging by the sound of heavy shuffling, the family had arrived home. He scrambled to hide Ethel’s letter, finally deciding on shoving it under his pillow. 

He straightened his tie, smoothed his jacket, and was just about to step out onto the landing when Gertrude brushed past him, her pearls clicking together as she walked.

“Well, don’t you look disgusting!”

“Grandmother, I-”

She waved her hand in dismissal, the other still firmly grasping her cane.

“I may not be able to see it, but I can smell it. You’re having trouble with that little girl from the hospital, and it’s obvious that you can’t control the situation on your own! You’re the talk of the town because of her, and if it doesn’t get settled soon, I’ll have to-”

“She’s resigning, Grandmother. She handed in her letter today.”

Gertrude’s face instantly softened. 

“Oh, well that’s good. Very good. More scandal is the last thing we need in this family.”

She leaned in closer, her milky eyes staring directly into Ephraim’s.

“You know that better than anyone.”

Ephraim nodded, although she couldn’t see. Satisfied, she continued down the hallway, her dog following close behind her.

I noticed you restructured the American syllabus for the IC, and after groaning at the extra cash I would have to lay down to buy the readings (and at there being only one week of Dickinson*), I rejoiced that I would finally get introduced to American modernism. Along those lines —

Would you consider postwar literature (through to the millenium) for a future IC? If not (or even if so!) I would love to hear how you’d structure this era/a syllabus on it, which you’ve talked about in glowing terms before. But I’m too young to have picked it up as it happened, and it’s too young to have been really canonised yet (or at least, the culture wars have stopped it from being canonised on its own terms rather than primarily political ones). Or maybe it has been but I don’t know where to look, although you said recently that criticism for that era hasn’t yet lived up to the books themselves.

But like, Morrison and DeLilo and Ellison and Bellow and Roth and Baldwin and Pynchon and McCarthy and Nabokov (kinda) and Wallace (apparently) and who else am I missing, and a handful of romancers like Dick and Le Guin — not to mention poets, playwrights, essayists, or Brits! And I don’t know how it all fits together, since we’ve (as Bloom predicted!) handed over the keys to the cultural narrative to the ‘cultural studies’ people who know only how to read films and magazines, and even then just barely.

*Also, do you think you might be able to include at the end of the syllabus a note on the works you’ve swapped out? The expanded guide would be useful, even though (indeed because!) it includes some of the more obvious picks, which I can return to later.

Thanks! I did address some of your questions about how exactly I changed the syllabus in my most recent Substack. I mainly just deleted a few Emerson essays (Nature, "The Divinity School Address," "Circles," "Experience"), Thoreau's Walden (in favor of two shorter pieces by him), and a handful of Whitman's Civil War poems.

I have the lectures for a course I taught on American Lit from 1945 to the present on YouTube here. I wouldn't do anything differently when it comes to poetry and drama than I did there. With fiction, I focused on the short story because it was an intro-level class; for that reason I omitted some writers mainly known for novels (Ellison, Bellow, McCarthy) but I didn't avoid anyone on strictly political grounds (Roth and Wallace are included, for instance, despite the controversy about them). I don't really think of Nabokov as an American writer! For the criticism of the era, big names include Irving Howe, Lionel Trilling, Elizabeth Hardwick, Gore Vidal, Susan Sontag, and then it becomes more strictly academic...I'm not sure I'd ever teach a course on that per se.

I would consider and have considered an IC course focused on the postwar American novel, though I'd probably cut it off at 2000. (As Roger Shattuck once said quixotically of the Visible College, "Students can read living authors on their own time." The few living authors below are over 80 and effectively beyond criticism.) The reading list would probably look like this:

Graham Greene, Christopher Isherwood, Muriel Spark, Iris Murdoch, J. G. Ballard, A. S. Byatt, Angela Carter, Salman Rushdie, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, Zadie Smith, David Mitchell...who else? I'm probably missing obvious people! (I've never read Penelope Fitzgerald, for example. I want to read The Blue Flower but have to read that Novalis thing first and then it never happens, etc. Never read Kingsley Amis, don't care for Martin Amis...)

Rain pattered hard against the window as a small flutter flew through Delanie’s stomach.

The baby was kicking.

She smiled contentedly as she glanced around the room. Harold sat at a small desk near the door. He was hunched over his work, his brows furrowed in concentration. He was always so proud when he received his grades, especially in regards to arithmetic. Delanie had never seen a child more delighted by his parent’s praise. Harold beamed with such joy at even the slightest sign of pride from either of his parents. It fueled him in a way that nothing else truly did.

Ephraim, meanwhile, was racing his tin horses around the room. They galloped and leaped over obstacles, prancing their way around a bemused Harold’s legs. The race finally ended at Delanie’s feet, the steeds being quickly abandoned in favor of a more amusing game.

The baby kicked again, and Delanie smiled. She loved her boys, but she was hoping for a girl this time. She had always dreamt of an even family of two boys and two girls, and she hoped that she was closer to achieving that goal.
