Male/female, white/black, good/evil, civilized/primitive, culture/nature, self/other, literature/paraliterature, mind/body, conscious/unconscious, subject/object, presence/absence, voice/writing, artist/critic, sanity/madness — these seeming conceptually egalitarian oppositions that cover vast socially exploited hierarchies are, themselves, a theme; perhaps, till fairly recently, they were the great theme of the West.

“Science fiction is not 'about the future.' Science fiction is in dialogue with the present... a significant distortion of the present that sets up a rich and complex dialogue with the reader's here and now.” - Samuel R. Delany, Starboard Wine, 1984

The Other Side was the last song written and recorded for the Before I Let Go CD. As a result, it is a little different and in some ways a little bit better than the other tracks.
The Other Side is the only positive song on Before I Let Go. Instead of being a guitar ladened rant, the song is about helping others recognize that there is life beyond their current problems.
Back when I lived in South Jersey, I helped a few friends move furniture out of their marital homes. I listened while they “cried in their beer” and considered compiling their worry into an exhaustive lyric and throwing big guitar at it, But, I ended-up creating a simple song to answer the “what do I do now” question.
The Other Side starts by acknowledging how hard it is to see tomorrow when our world is falling apart today. Faith, hope and personal beliefs are important. But, it really just takes help. It seems trivial, but people need their hands held, emotional hugs and a reminder that there is a better tomorrow. And, they need a lot of help moving cabinets up and down tight staircases.
As the last song recorded for the CD, The Other Side enjoys significantly better audio. I applied technology and lessons learned to improve the quality of the vocals, guitar and overall texture.
I hope you enjoy the rare positive message. The Other Side is the last song that I will share from Before I Let Go. If you enjoy the music, then like, subscribe, follow…, the music on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.
The next song that I share will be a bit of a cool surprise.

There’s a very interesting concept that I get from Delany’s erotic works it’s a kind of radical acceptance in these marginalized communities he describes. There’s also a kind of equalizing of classes through unusual sexual intercourse. It’s all incredibly interesting and I need to read even more about it

Desire is a very scary and uneasy notion. Its mark is absence. Accordingly, a positivistic culture frequently finds itself at a loss to explore it or elaborate its workings.

Thinking about a science fiction novel, a smuggling ship a little bit like in Firefly, except every single person on the ship is secretly an agent who is using the ship as cover for various sabotage and information brokering. All of them are pretending to be from different factions, but are doing terrible jobs about it because they're behaving like propaganda about the enemy, but the only person who can call bullshit has to pretend they're fooled to keep their cover. So every spy/double agent knows there is another double agent, but thinks the rest of the crew is legit. Unfortunately they all spend so much time paranoid about keeping under cover and trying to manipulate the next planet they go to, that they never end up successfully smugglijg any actual cargo.
For awhile it looks like the ship captain is some kind of mega-quintuple agent, but it turns out they're the only person who legitimately isn't a spy. They figured out it was more profitable to collect bribes from thirty different governments than to try and run a clandestine smuggling operation.

A few months ago, I received a random text message saying, “Why’d You Wake Me is my new favorite song!” I was blown away especially considering the talent of the person who sent the message.
“Why’d You Wake Me” is a simple song. I tried to capture a time when being asleep was better than being awake.
Steve Oakley and I first recorded “Why’d You Wake Me” at a studio in Holland, Pennsylvania. Although not a great idea for audio quality, we left the outside doors open because it was one of those precious spring days with blues skies and little wind.
Due to the quiet acoustic nature of the song, “Why’d You Wake Me” didn’t fit with the last Mother Redcap record. And, it wasn’t what I was trying to do with the “Moment of Truth” CD. Fortunately, the “Before I Let Go” CD afforded me the opportunity to finally publish the song. This recording of “Why’d You Wake Me” was recorded in my home studio (AKA “spare bedroom”) - no memory of a beautiful spring day but a great experience performing and producing the song.
Big thanks to everyone from the homeland who stays in touch. Friends and family were key to getting through times when being asleep was better than being awake. The random text message with “love this song,” “check out my new tune,”… or the “the Cowboys suck” often make my day. Finally, if you ever wonder how I am doing, I sleep as little as possible now.

Why'd You Wake Me
Every night
I close my eyes
Go to sleep
I try to dream
Pull you close
I feel you warmth
Can't believe I'm asleep
I wish that I could fall asleep
Why’d you wake me
Feel so nervous
I taste your breath
Rub you hands
I begin to tremble
Hear your heart
I touch you breast
Rub against you in unconsciousness.
I wish that I could fall asleep
Why’d you wake me
I move in close
Go too fast
Don't hear no
I want to make it last
I taste your sweat
I see your eyes
Can't slow down
When I'm denied.
I wish that I could fall asleep
Why’d you wake me.
Every night, I close my eyes…
