Would you write an america and england fluffy drabble?
If domestic counts as fluffy, I sure can indeed
---------------------
Another Man's Trash
From his spot on the rafters, America watched England teeter up the ladder to the attic, a full mug in each hand, and took pleasure in offering him no assistance.
‘Took you long enough,’ he said when England was safely up and crouched under the oddly crooked roof supports. He took the mug England held out to him before it had the potential to become a weapon, ‘I thought you’d died down there.’
‘How kind of you to come and check on me.’
‘After what you’re making me do, you deserve it.’
‘’Making’ you do? I deserve death for asking for your help?’
‘Yes.’
‘Noted.’
England hunkered down a foot away and eyed the section of rafters, or lack of, which America was guarding. There wasn’t much natural light to see by. The attic spaces of England’s huge country manor were partitioned and sectioned off between the different wings, some used as servants’ rooms, others for proper storage. This particular section was one of the more abandoned, quickly and haphazardly boarded, and with were only two, small windows to fight against the dust flecked darkness. The hole which America was sat next to was lighthouse’d by a several flashlights, and he could see more by the light from the room below than he could from the small, round, single paned window above it.
England nodded at the room below, bones on the right side of his face sharp with yellow flashlight. ‘Shouldn’t be too long left.’
‘Are you fucking kidding me? There’s still a huge hole in the floor.’
‘Ceiling.’
‘Whatever.’
‘We’ve done most of it.’
‘Done? The whole thing needs replacing.’ America waved his arm wide, coffee still in hand, and England watched its trajectory with alarm. They’d cleared this area of the attic when they’d first started work, the ancient objects and historical junk which had previously occupied the space piled high or scattered about whatever space up here that remained, but hot coffee through the already abused boards probably wouldn’t end well. ‘This boarding is hundreds of years old, I’m surprised any of it is still weightbearing.’
‘It’s well made.’
‘It was well made, like a billion years ago.’
‘It’s not that old.’ England rolled his eyes at the look America gave him and took a sip of his tea, ‘The whole thing doesn’t need replacing, and the main beams are fine. That bit only rotted because of the leak in the roof.’
America opened his mouth and then closed it again, sensing that arguing this point wouldn’t actually get him out of the damn attic any faster and might, in fact, trap him into helping for a much longer project. It was bad enough that his quick summer stay to the UK had been consumed by this; if England accepted an additional idea that he proposed, there was no way to wiggle out of it peacefully. Instead, America glared up at the spot of roof they’d spent the better part of the last few days fixing and waterproofing.
‘You’re lucky I was visiting. If I hadn’t noticed the stain in the guest room ceiling you’d be fucked.’
‘Hardly.’
‘And you wouldn’t have been able to do this by yourself.’
England made a non-committal noise, ‘I would have been fine.’
‘Sure you would.’
‘I would have. It would have taken longer though, certainly. And I’d rather someone I trust than some random builder who has no idea how old this all is. Far too difficult to explain and it would have been an utter ball ache finding a specialist.’ England turned away, placing his mug down and busying himself with the stack of floorboards waiting patiently for them along one of the beams.
America smiled and shook his head. That was as close of an acknowledgement of thanks or gratitude as he was likely to get. Enough too that England considered him competent.
He tried his coffee, mournfully noting that England had reverted, likely out of habit, to making the instant stuff rather than the proper beans. Either that, or America had torn his way through the good coffee that England kept handy for what he called his ‘overly picky’ guests. ‘How old is this part anyway.’
‘This part of the house?’ England handed him a measuring tape and a board, the wood thick and heavy. They’d need to cut them to size, then add the insulation, then plaster the ceiling- actually no, fuck that. England could deal with the decoration himself, America had already splintered his hands tearing out all of the sodden stuff that was there before. ‘Not that old. I think I had this wing built not long after I found you. Maybe my first trip home afterwards.’
America let out a whistle, ‘Hate to break it to you, but that’s too old.’
‘It’s the youngest part of the house.’ England huffed, ‘I’ve been living here for about two thousand years in one way or another lad, a few hundred years is nothing in the grand scheme of things.’
‘I’m not gonna bother giving that a response.’
America peered down through the hole, cautiously perching on the edge of the rafters to see into the bedroom below. His room of all rooms; he’d had to relocate himself to Canada’s. He was sure his brother wouldn’t mind.
‘Mind yourself.’ England warning, hand twitching as if to grab him when America leant even further forwards, ‘We don’t need an A&E trip on top of everything else.’
‘I’m not gonna fall.’
England tutted and looked away, ‘And haven’t I heard that before.’
‘Stop moaning, you’ll go grey.’
‘You’ll make me go grey.’
‘You’d look more your age, at least.’
‘Piss off.’
‘That’s not a very nice thing to say to- oh.’
‘What?’
In the process of measuring the width of where the first board would go, America’s eye caught on something wedged in the insulation. It must have slipped between the older boards when they became warped by the water, or even lost between them years previously. It was deep in the insulation, not budging when America poked it experimentally with the tip of his finger. Shifting his weight, he reached out further across the hole to tug it free, ignoring England’s muttering to come around the other side and get it like a normal person and the hand he rested on America’s shoulder to steady him.
The object was small and wooden. It looked, of all things, like a thick stick, but as America worked it free it was revealed to be a very short, very crude spear. About half a foot long at most, it was roughly sharpened at both ends with a groove in the middle for a handle.
America turned it over, baffled, ‘What the hell is this?’
‘You tell me. You made it.’
America blinked, ‘Did I?’
‘Hmm.’ England wore a soft smile, ‘I left you alone with a penknife; either that or you took it without me noticing. You brought that to me and pronounced it as a “hunting weapon.”’
‘Huh.’ America rolled the stick in his palm and laughed, ‘You’re a sentimental bastard, you know that?’
‘Shut up.’ England coloured, ‘You would have been devastated if I threw it away.’
‘Uh huh. And that’s the only reason you kept it.’
‘Yes.’ England clicked his fingers and held out his hand, ‘Now give it here and let’s get on with it, it’ll be dinner soon and we need to order something early unless we want to eat at stupid o’clock tonight because by fuck am I cooking after all this.’
America grinned and settled himself more comfortable on his beam, long legs dangling down, ‘And what are you going to do with this very impressive hunting weapon?’
‘None of your business.’
‘Can I have it?’
‘No.’
‘Why not?’
‘Alfred. Stop talking and give it here.’
America peered down once more, imagining the family room further along the warren of hallways of the manor, ‘Can I put it with Deidre downstairs?’
‘Christ- will you leave that bloody statue alone.’
‘I think Uncle Rhys did a very good job with her.’
‘I think Rhys needs therapy.’
‘Aw. Don’t be mean to her, she’s beautiful.’
‘It’s terrible.’
‘She’ll look good with something to hold. Will make that lump of hers on her chest look more like an arm than a third boob.’ America held the odd stick to his chest in imitation, ‘See?’
‘Fine.’ England threw his hands up and shifted backwards as if to prompt America to do the same. ‘Put it with the statue if you want but stop leaning so far over the edge.’
‘Stop being such a fanny fart, I’m holding the beam.’
‘Yes but that could crack.’
America held on with one hand and sat further forwards, grinning as England swatted at his knee, ‘I thought you said the main beams were fine and strong?’
‘With how your great lumpen weight is swinging from it anything coul-‘
England was interrupted by a sharp, distinct crack of old, dry wood. America froze. A fine sprinkling of dust showered down from the roof, settling onto his knees like snow. They watched each other wide eyed, waiting to see what would happen and America trying not to think about the very heavy slate of the roof not that far from his organs. When nothing immediately collapsed he sat up properly, letting go of the beam slowly as if afraid of spooking it. On the other side of the hole, England buried his head in his hands and groaned.
‘Why. Why.’
America laughed nervously and gently patted the beam. ‘I guess I’m buying dinner?’
England didn’t reply.
‘Cool... cool. Nice.’

Happy Audio Drama Sunday! This week made me happy because of all the Tina @espressonist content, found in this week's Midnight Burger episode as Deidre AND the premiere of Waiting For October as Yvonne!
@midnightburgr Welcome to the Horizon Part 7 - Double Deidre: Double Deidre is double the fun! I'm glad she had a chance to start talking things out with Verge - I'm really rooting for those kids! It was nice to hear Flat Doug be such a great help to June to try to solve things. Also Frank having a day off is so deserved, that man's stress levels are a mile high.
@monkeymanproductions Waiting For October S1 Prologue - Story Time: The first episode is finally here!!! I've been so excited for WFO to arrive (I've been w-waiting...waiting f-...waiting for October...😆) and it was worth the wait! The Prologue has given us a lovely look at Karo and Yvonne's relationship, and teased us a ton about all of the fantastic creatures and stories to come.
S1 Episode 1 - Pumpkin Patch: We've only met a few monsters so far but can I say, everyone was fantastic! I knew the show had a stacked cast, and man does it show! I NEED to know more about Karo's story (and everyone's, really). My reaction to Grey mentioning where they went to school was exactly the same as Yvonne's!
Residents of @proserpinapark Ep 39 - The Truth Revealed: It's the season 4 finale!! We finally got some answers about Junichi and learned more about the 3 (4?) wise monkeys! Things have been really set up for S5 and I can't wait for the gang to reunite and for Mirai's continued adventures with the Kitsune and Daichi.
@desertskiespodcast Desert Skies FM - Climb That Rock!: Nony's message was so true - it's important to say yes to the little version of you, to climb that rock or make googly faces. You and little you have to work together to rest your weary soul.
@octoberandfish October Jones and Fish With Legs S02E10 - You Only Shlorp Twice (Casamanta pt. 2): A high stakes gambling game! Noble arm (leg?) candy! An intimidating bodyguard! Clever disguises! All the elements you need for a heist attempt!
@starfallpod Act 1, Scene xv: So many things happening this episode! What is UP with these visions Leona is having? PTSD manifesting or is there a more sinister influence ? Hosse knowing all the lines and performing as Mariette the 4th was everything I didn't know I wanted! Also, go off Leona! You show that Keeper! (Sorry Fel, I know you don't agree.)

Laurent Vital on Irish clothing in 1518
Burgundian courtier Laurent Vital visited Kinsale, Co. Cork in 1518. He wrote an account of the visit titled "Speaking a little of the country of Ireland" which included descriptions of Irish people and culture. Vital was less bigoted toward the Irish than many of the 16th c. English writers. His writing was still somewhat biased though, because his information came from a French-speaking (probably Anglo-Irish) Irishman who was prejudiced against the rural Gaelic Irish.
Vital's account was only translated into English in 2012, so it is not included in Irish dress history books, because all of them (Dress in Ireland by Mairead Dunlevy, Before the Kilt by Gerald Kelly, Bríd Mahon's books, H. F. McClintock's books) were published before 2012. This is unfortunate, because Vital's descriptions include a lot of details of Irish dress.
The 2012 translation has some flaws. I think the translator, Dorothy Convery, was not knowledgeable about 16th c. Irish dress and possibly not the most familiar with 16th c. French, because she completely misinterpreted some of the clothing descriptions. I have done my best to correct these, but I don't actually know French, so my revised version is not perfect either. If anyone has suggestions for improving it, let me know. I used Randle Cotgrave's 1611 A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues, Dictionnaire du Moyen Français, version 2020 (DMF 2020), the University of Chicago's compilation of historical French dictionaries, Wiktionary, and honestly, google translate for this. (Google translate actually does a really good job with French, like 60% of the time.)
The original French text of Vital's account is available here. Convery's complete translation is here. Content Warning if you decide to read the Vital's complete account: It contains a description of assault with a possible forced marriage. Also, Vital was kind of obsessed with breasts. I am only including the parts describing Irish dress and hairstyles in this post. Translation footnotes are at the end of each page. I couldn't figure out a nicer way to format them on tumblr.
Excerpts from "Speaking a little of the country of Ireland" translated by Dorothy Convery and revised by Deidre
p. 285
The inhabitants [of Ireland] are very strangely and singularly costumed and would that it is so well described that you might picture how they dress just as I saw them, both the men and the women. For to see them is enough to make you laugh. Firstly married women wear their finery, and linen head coverings (1); some yellow and others white. When they are women of status, they have chemises with wide sleeves, worked around the collar and in the seams with silk needlework of different colours. Many of them had their hair cropped in front and back, except for two tresses of hair at either side, which are an ell long. They plait these like children here making hats from rushes and then secure them so they do not come undone. And with the tops of their heads so adorned, these loops of hair braided accordingly hang down in front more or less to their waists, in such a way that these women can put the ends into their kerchiefs (1), which they secure with wool tape (2). These women have their kirtles or petticoats (3) punched (4) there as they were worn alone in the past, with rings placed over (5) the bustline to support their breasts. And above their dresses they wear wide fillets (6) and big belts decorated with beautiful buckles, some of gilded silver, also of copper, metal or brass, according to their rank. Their dresses have loose sleeves, open the length of the arms, unfastened to hang (7) very nicely. Generally, the men, women and young girls wear their chemises (8) open to the waist, without any difference between them except that the women's chemises are, as they are over here, wide at the bottom, made with gores (9) with 4 seams, (10) if needed. So that most young women and girls have their chests naked to the waist; it is as common there to see or touch the breast of a girl or woman, as it is to touch her hand. And so, there are as many different fashions and customs as there are countries.
Translation notes:
coevrechief: kerchief or headcovering
patelette: Bande d'étoffe (DMF 2020) cloth tape, wool or possibly linen
cottes ou cotelettes: kirtle, or possibly coat, or frock/gown (see Cotte in Cotgrave 1611)
ponchonnées: pierced or punched, meaning eyelets made with an awl, or possibly decorative stamping
rondz eslevez: possibly metal lacing rings which were in use by the late 15th c. This whole sentence is confusing to me.
tissu: a bawdricke, ribbon, fillet, or head-band of woven stuffe (Cotgrave 1611)
lachiés à traillette: laschier: let go, release (DMF 2020) trailler: to trayle a Deere (Cotgrave 1611) to trail or to hang. I think this sentence is describing hanging sleeves like those on the Shinrone gown, but it could also be interpreted as "Their dresses have wide sleeves, open the length of the arms, loose to hang very nicely."
I am keeping the original French usage of chemise to mean both the man's and woman's garment, because Irish uses the same word, léine, for both.
ghéron: I think this word is derived from the Old French giron meaning gusset or triangular shape.
genoulx: knee, also join (ie seam in this context) (cf. genouille: full of joins (Cotgrave 1611))
p. 286
The women and girls there wear coloured stockings (1) of red and green and others that they like, better narrowed and tightened with garters than those of Castile. They wear little shoes (2) with single soles, very pretty and cute, worked over other colors of leather and sometimes gilded with tinned leather, as if it were gilded (2), like the shoes which were bought for children at fairs in past times. The place was full of beautiful young women and also girls of marriageable age who were very charming and pleasant. Unmarried young women went bareheaded in summer time with their hair tied back in the same way as maidens over here; and they wear on their heads garlands of flowers or greenery.
Translation notes:
chausses: stockings or hose in Middle French (wiktionary.org)
solier: alternate spelling of soulier: shoe (Cotgrave 1611)
ie like with gold
p. 287-288
Having heard about the rig-out of the women and girls, listen how the men are kitted out. For sure, even more strangely than the women, and particularly the rural people and the savages; for they were shorn and shaved one palm above the ears, so that only the tops of their heads were covered with hair. But on the forehead they leave about a palm of hair to grow down to their eyebrows like a tuft of hair which one leaves hanging on horses between the two eyes. They are strangely bearded, some shave their beards just to just above the mouth and others to below the mouth. Others shave some places and let their beards grow in tufts. These men have their chemises open there, down to the belt, without having sleeves, so their arms are naked. They are belted (1) in heavy linen which goes one and a half times around them, and goes nearly from their neck to their feet, and they go with naked feet and bare legs. [. . .skipping the part on weapons because I don't know enough about weapons. . .] These men dress and enshroud (2) themselves in large hairy mantles, worn over their heads as the women in Brabant wear their huiks. (3) This mantle only goes halfway past the belt; and over that a long shortening (4) of linen. Thus shorn, bearded, armed and barefoot — as I said — imagine how strange this costume is to look at. I must say, I have never seen anything like this before even in a painting.
Translation notes:
chaindent: from chainture the Middle French spelling of ceinture
affubler: to cloath, clad, put on; to attire, or cover with, muffle, or enwrap in, hide, or shrowd, under clothes. (Cotgrave 1611)
huik: a type of cloak worn by women in the Low Countries. It typically had a bill-like brim to shade the wearer's face. more info
escourcoeul: probably the same origin as écourter: to shorten. I think Vital is describing the Irishmen's practice of shortening their léinte by pulling them up over their belts, but I'm not confident about the translation of this sentence.

1, 8, 9, 4 for Striker, please. I am quite curious about these ones.
I shall, thank you Lemy.
What favorite Pokemon do you two share, if you share any?
Rapidash. What can I say? I love a fiery horse.
8. Did you get any Pokemon from them? Did you gift them any Pokemon?
Probably a Rapidash. That sounds like something Deidre would be into.
9. Which Pokemon do you associate most with them, even if you can't see them owning it?
Mudsdale.
4. Do you know their Pokemon team or starters?
Mudsdale
Mudbray
Rapidash
Ponyta

what specific f/f witcher rare pair would you like to see fanwork for?
Oh lord, now I have to use my brain n think, walk the talk. Here’s your fair warning that my brain just throws me the wildest inspo sometimes.
Definitely have seen some Ciri/Bea but would love more! I also would love to see some Ciri/Jutta bc I feel like the shield-maiden thing would work for Ciri.
Would love to see Vernossiel, Tamara or Rosa living their best lives, although no specific ships in mind! (Actually I lied, Vernossiel/Dragonfly when!!!!)
Honestly I kind of love the idea that the sorceresses are like that one friend group where everyone is two degrees of separation away from an ex. Triss/Keira fascinated me when I saw it the other day. I think Fringilla and Yennefer should’ve had an extremely charged homoerotic rivalry while at Aretuza. I would throw Corinne to this mix, but I almost feel bad subjecting her to a lodge member.
Rosa and Vivienne in Toussaint!! (I lied again, hello Rosa)
(Edit: I’m an absolute clown for forgetting my black sun princesses, who I love and adore. I’ve seen a few incredible Yenfri things done before. Deidre and Syanna should’ve linked up, change my mind.)

i’ve been following your posts, and the trans to trans communication post has convinced me that i love your catvn ocs. please tell me about nick.
Oh geez thank you!!!
Nick is one of Rachel's coworkers and he's a pretty serious and mature kind of guy. He's a bit like Rachel in his demeanor, but he's more awkward, and unlike Rachel, he doesn't have the emotional intelligence of a brick. He's responsible and really good to go to for advice; he'd be the "designated driver" of the group, if that was ever necessary.
He smokes a lot but he's trying to quit. He also likes lifting weights and running; he accidentally ran into Rachel once on his normal route, and now they run together on the weekends sometimes.
Rachel has a little bit of a crush on him, but he doesn't reciprocate (there's a weird sort-of romance going on between him and the other coworker, Deidre, instead).
#my ocs#catvn#he was originally the main love interest but then dodoaka was added to the story.... i am sorry nick. F for respects#notart#the only other important piece of info is that nick is officially 'sexiest person in the office'#the second sexiest is deidre. aka the person who came up with these titles
