Questions for Fic Writers!

Sorry it took a while to reply! 10. How do you decide what to write? Usually there's an idea lurking somewhere that finally sticks its head up and goes ME ME ME. I keep a list of "hmm" things - for fanfic, what are moments that are unclear to me (whether it's a char's motivation, or the fallout of an event, or a dialogue line, or 'what does this imply about the world') or a "haha wouldn't it be cool if", and go from there. Like right now, I have a MK Wild West AU idea that started with seeing 'arranged marriage' on a prompts list, wondering how to do it, and it really wants to be 'take Sonya and Johnny and Kano and Erron and Jax and Nightwolf and maybe Liu Kang and Kung Lao and put them in the American frontier and explore all these juicy dynamics'. And then there's Apothecary Diaries and "haha Maomao and Shisui are nerds together, they need to have a playdate".

12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?

Hmm. I used to really not like soulmates but got converted/turned onto it by friends and some great examples of it. The sheer amount of worldbuilding you can tuck away in "what happens if people are colorblind until/unless they meet X criteria"? What does that say about film/television, fashion, medical care (how do you see a discoloration?), even traffic and warning signs? Another one is omegaverse, because there's all the smut - and there's also all the worldbuilding because of how the dynamics would affect day-to-day life. How would first responders handle things if someone was in rut/heat? How about HR in a business for days off for heat/rut reasons? What kind of changes would you see in parental leave if something like mpreg was extant in a patriarchal society (like our current one) - or what kind of overall societal changes would you see? How would social classes form in/around the secondary alpha/beta/omega designations - would only people who didn't respond to/have heats and ruts be eligible for certain roles? Would only omegas be responsible for a certain role, or alphas? How's something different if it's an alpha-dominant setting, versus beta-dominant or omega-dominant? etc. ... so I guess some of the "lol unrealistic" tropes get me excited because of all the worldbuilding inherent in them if you treat them seriously. Like, how would life be different if you had a matching tattoo when you were born? Would there be databases of tattoos? Would parents find their childrens' soulmates immediately and be in touch? What would happen if someone didn't approve of the soulmate? What drama could you cause there? ... and then that cycles back to question 10 and my answer for it. Eventually one of those ideas goes "OH YEAH" and then I find myself writing it.

The negotiations are among the funniest part of this. The Noldor and the Doriathrim finding common ground is a hilarious thing to write, particularly because the Noldor do not think it impressive for an entire people to be hiding under a Maia’s skirt rather than go out against Morgoth burning like stars.

Understand Maeglin is every inch a pompous, confident Doriathrin prince in this one. Has quite the ego. He knows he’s lovely (by Sindarin standards) and anybody he picks should immediately be his biggest fan because I am Gorgeous and I Chose You, Also Love Me Forever

Maeglin is also only 107 in Elven reckoning. The Noldor go smh Thingol why send us your heir he is a baby

So like Nolofinwe and Fingon prepared this dossier of all the eligible Noldorin elleth (they’re pushing for Finduilas to be a Doriath princess to counteract Himring’s political power and wealth)

But Maeglin chose the person nobody wanted him to choose.

Also there is a mildly philosophical thing about Amanyar beauty standards where Maedhros is ‘damaged goods’ while in Sindarin standards he is the greatest beauty there can be because red hair and scars = 🥰🥵😏🥴

Now, I want to talk a little more about Harry's phone calls. Disco Elysium spoilers ahead.

I think it's very sad that a lot of players miss out on the phone calls. Not just that one but the ones before and even after it.

There's the call you can make near Evrart's office, where you first hear of the video store. You have been holding a video hostage for five years now. Its description?

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

"'No wonder no one's been missing it.'"

By the boardwalk, everyone on the line is lonely. There's a woman who doesn't seem to be in her right mind. A woman Harry whose loneliness we understand all too well.

There's that call I've talked about before.

One thing I didn't say about that call is that, if you just choose another option, if you don't pretend you're sleeping with his wife, he seems perfectly normal. Pleasant, even.

That might be the scariest thing of all.

Then there's a man desperate for money. Someone we have the option to try to be kind to, even though things don't go as planned.

There is a disillusioned man lost in his own work.

Then, of course, there's that call. The most desperate one of all.

Worse yet, Lt. Kitsuragi never even hears us. We're somewhere too far for him to reach.

Go ahead. Call again. Now Empathy speaks up.

"Stop scaring her."

"'No wonder no one's been missing it.'"

"'We could all be a bit kinder to each other, don't you think?'"

it comes so naturally, your mind never questions the whole... predicament the two of you are in. anaxagoras' presence brings forth something tender, a taste of nostalgia, a longing for the past.

it feels... nice, to having been taken care of, to feel the warmth of another soul with you. and so it doesn't catch you off guard, nor does it make you jump, when he cradles you from behind, chest pressed against your back, feeling every bump and curve of his skin, the thin washcloth hangs low on his hips.

the water is warm but you feel nothing of it-- compared to how his breath fawns against your skin, leaving goosebumps in its wake, the stimuli feels too much and like nothing at once, leaving behind a feeling of dizzyness.

the temperature of the water does not help your case at all, you presume. water coming straight from the source, it has to be cooled down manually. steam falls down in the stone bathroom but does nothing to hide your flushed faces. the cold of the stone bath does not make you jump but his hands do, when they trail just a little low, linger just a little longer than what's accepted as appropirate.

maybe to the outer eye, all the alarm signs are there, yet you pay it no mind. not when the senses overwhelm, the heart overweights logic. it is so easy to just close your eyes and let it be, to let loose and embrace something for just the two of you-- behind closed doors, a moment uninterrupted, unintruded, save for ragged breaths and shaky limbs.

Perhaps I should not share this with the public but I am in a talkative mood today, so you are lucky. We did so many concerning things that I truly hope my son will not take after me.

We hid from our lessons, snuck out of the palace at night and once I even brought a horse into my chambers. Oh and I used to cut Deiphobos' hair while he wore a jar on his head, so "it would get more even". He had the worst bangs after that and cried for three days.😮‍💨 Mother got angry with me, even though it was his idea!

We had a lovely childhood, even with all the responsibilities and expectations that were placed upon our shoulders. Perhaps you should ask @deideioftroy, @panthoonides or @belovedofhektor they all know many more stories.😊

So this is another mix of me and @skaelds ideas. Maeglin basically grows up in the Doriathrin court as Thingol’s heir presumptive, because Lúthien was yet unwed and had no sons to claim direct heirship.

Eöl his father is the eldest son of Elmo, Thingol’s younger brother, so he has Doriathrin royal blood also in his blood.

Shortcutting the premise, Thingol opens negotiations with the Noldor on Elmo and Eöl’s prompting. The Sindar originally wanted a double marriage to seal an alliance. Lúthien was going to be bride to a Noldor prince, and Maeglin was going to take a Noldor bride.

Celegorm was told of the proposal for Lúthien’s hand and refused. Negotiations were on-going for an alternative.

Maeglin, meanwhile, instead of choosing a bride, selects Maedhros instead, to the shock of the Noldor delegation and the Doriathrin court.

Basically the story is Maedhros enjoying being a househusband in Doriath and finding a chance for quiet because he is away from Himring, from duties and his riotous brothers for a time.

Aaaaand, Maeglin might have bitten more than he could chew, selecting the ‘harmless-looking’ Noldo in the basket 👹💀 he he he

Um, actually nooooo. I never thought about that before. If I do ever find a voice I like for Pine I’ll share it :D

Some aspects they take care of well, like feeding themselves and hygiene and stuff like that. They aren’t good with properly taking care of themselves when they get sick. It’s extremely annoying to them that they can’t do stuff to help others or just stuff they enjoy because their stupid immune system failed them and therefore go on normally, even if they had the plague or smth (Lunar usually has to force them to actually rest)

hmmmmmmmm, also never thought about that. So without much thought, honeysuckles cause they cool and have a cool name and I love them <3. Answer might change once I actually think about it tho 😅
