Harry Styles gives Werchter audience a new home

"Harry Styles needed neither lasers, fireworks nor confetti to pack up Werchter's festival park: his charm was enough.

Pink T-shirts, boas and trousers flooded the Haachtsesteenweg on Saturday - we also spotted two jet-black Slipknot shirts on the way to the festival park, but they hurriedly legged it in the other direction. A parade of bright colours was the dress code that accompanied Harry Styles' 'Love on tour' concert series, which was due for its 161st stop in Werchter. That means more than 3 million people already saw the show - Werchter added another 60,000.

It makes the 29-year-old Brit an exceptional pop star. In 2010, he first found fame in The X-factor and ended up in the boy band One Direction. Styles incessantly handed out thumbs-ups, waves and winks, as if he were not on a pop stage but at a reception with old school friends. He adorned himself in boas, rainbow flags and cowboy hats from the audience, asked if everyone was feeling emotionally stable ('no' was the convincing answer) and congratulated the birthday and pregnant people in the audience. At times, Styles seemed more talk show host than pop singer: he inserted a chatting quarter in which he had a girl tell a joke about an apple playing the trumpet and asked another audience member about her summer plans. A third girl got the grand prize: she had written 'help me tell my girlfriend I love her' on a sign and Styles had the entire festival park declare love in her name.

Not the star shines, but the audience

That frequent chatting, musing and thanking sometimes took the pace out of the show, but picking up speed never seemed to be the intention. Styles is not a whirlwind that overwhelms the venue and leaves it dazed. He left the big, banging pop choruses needed for that with One Direction. Now he prefers to opt for nuance, as in the stunning ballad 'Fine line', the long-spun rock song 'She' or the frequent soul jams of his latest album Harry's house. In it, he left plenty of room for his ten-piece band to shine: drummer Sarah Jones played a starring role in 'Satellite', a wind quartet made 'Cinema' doubly catchy.

And Styles himself? Who focused mainly on his mission. 'The idea that we are separate, solitary beings is a hallucination,' he bellowed from the speakers before the show, a message he underscored by regularly bringing the audience into the picture. At their core, after all, mass concerts are not about the star on stage - who often seems smaller to many audience members than the beer glass in their hand - but about the connection in the audience.

Styles' songs that touch the most also allude to that search for a place to belong. In 'Matilda', the main character finds that place when she allows herself to break away from a toxic home situation. In the dreamy, romantic 'Keep driving', that place lies at the side of a lover, with all the world's problems in the rear-view mirror. On stage, Styles found that new home for 161 nights in the arms of a loving audience - and they in his. For a brief moment on Saturday night, Werchter's meadow was "a place to feel good, where we can treat people with kindness"."

The hotel was perfect: isolated, glamorous, and private. That’s why it was every celebrity’s dream. But to Y/n and Harry, it was their relationship’s paradise.

Y/n had a series of interviews lined up in Montreal and Harry just so happened to be able to fake sick long enough for the Montreal radio interview to be pushed back to an incredible two days. Two days was a lot for them, normally they’d have a phone call, a couple of hours, or even a day if lucky. But two days ment that they could spend the night together, and because One direction flew in on the red eye flight, they could get two.

When Harry checked in with the rest of the band, he went straight to his room, changed to pajamas and a sweatshirt with a hood, and left to room 2089, her room.

Harry got a little queezy on the trip up; his fear of heights combined with his lack of sleep and flying sickness didn’t make for a great combo. He just really needed some sleep.

He sprinted through the halls, knocked on the door, than yanked into the room by the only person he would want to yank him like that.

Y/n pushed him up against the closed door and kissed him. It was definitely messy—it was pass midnight and they’ve both been working, so who could blame them—but perfect for them.

“Darling I love your lips so much but I’m so tired I’m gonna need you to carry be to the bed.” Harry begged. “Need y’a to lift me up bridal style.”

“Mm, think you’ll have to carry me—“ Harry dropped his head so it was on her shoulder, grunting slightly. “—Or we can awkwardly waddle to the bed.”

They collapsed onto the bed, held in each others arms with sleep encompassing the couple right away. Harry was bear-hugging Y/n, practically turning into a blanket with the only goal of supplying her warmth. Y/n was happily hugging and subconsciously combing his long, unruly hair while they slept.

The work day started at 9 am. They haven’t seen each other much, but took comfort in the fact they could at least get mindnight to 9 together. Harry was receiving his goodbye kiss soon enough, though. It wasn’t a total loss; Harry got more kisses in the shower and showed Y/n exactly how much he missed her.

Harry was adjusting his pajama shorts as he was reluctantly pushed out of her room and raced to the elevator, making sure he didn’t give a surprise show to any of the guests in the hotel. He was alone in the elevator and ran into no one as he unlocked the door to him room.

He closed the door behind him and sighed, that is until he got spooked by some familiar faces.

“You could’ve let us know you got a booty call before we decided to have a 8am meeting, Styles.” Lenard, one of the many One Direction managers, yelled.

Among him was his mates, Niall, Liam, and Louis. All had their head down and a sorry look at Harry.

“I was only gone for a night.” Harry defended. “Still in the hotel-“

“I don’t want to hear your excuses, boy.” The grouchy man replied. “As punishment, you are on backups for the radio performance-”

“What?!”

“You heard me.” Lenard boomed. He turned to the other singers. “Take this as a warning boys. You’re all excused.” The other boys gave a sorry look to Harry, patting his shoulder, giving a nod, but they all could see was how pissed off Harry had become.

When the door shut, and it was just the two of them, Lenard got back on his bullshit again. “If your main concern is meeting with some girl willing to put herself out-“

“That’s unfair! You don’t know what you’re talking about!” Harry yelled back. “I am not just sleeping around, I just missed my girlfriend.”

“Oh right, your girlfriend Y/n, the one who sleeps to get roles” Lenard snickered.

“That is not true you asshole!”

“Whatever you have to tell yourself.” Lenard spoke. Lenard knew fully well who Y/n is, she was the reason Harry wasn’t willing to go into PR relationships with other celebrities. Harry was the most marketable members of One Direction, and Lenard wanted to make sure he could do the most so he could get a raise in his salary.

“You’re more than welcome to fuck around with some other girls. That Jenner one—“

“I already said no, Lenard!” Harry seethed. “I’m sick of all your controlling nagging! I’m singing and dancing my ass off and putting all my work into this and all you can do is complain that I miss one of your surprise meetings!”

Lenard didn’t know what to say, or quite frankly, didn’t care, so he ignored Harry. “You’ll be on closer watch. I will make sure to tell security to never let you out of their sight.”

“That’s unfair-“

“Quiet or you’ll be on backups the rest of tour.” Lenard threatened.

“You can’t do that! I’m half the show!” Harry fought back. “You know the show won’t be any good if I’m on backups.”

“Just clean yourself up and wear what you are suppose to. Downstairs in thirty.”

Lenard walked out, slamming the door behind him. Not letting Harry get a word in.

During the whole interview, Harry had on a fake smile. He was glad Y/n taught him how to make a fake smile look more believable, because all he could see was red.

Ever since Zayn left, One direction management had tighten its claws onto the remaining members. Wanting to make the boys sign a new contract, locking in the boys practically permanently. Y/n, like always, came in a clutch when she prevented Harry from signing and got Harry to get a lawyer that wasn’t connect to 1D, providing her own. With this new lawyer, Harry was able to prevent permanent control, letting him drop when he needed; which only caused more chaos in the group.

As sad as he was for his friend for leaving the band, he understood were Zayn came from. Privacy, independence, freedom, that’s all he wanted.

“Harry you’ve been quiet here today, what’s on your mind.” The interviewer asked.

An idea came to Harry: subtly piss off management. His fake smile turned into a smirk.

“I’m thinking about a shag a recently had.” Harry replied.

“A shag?”

“A shag.” He said bluntly. “Now I got this song idea in my head.”

“How interesting.” The interviewing commented, trying to find an interesting yet pg way to spin this, yet all Harry could focus on was the middle aged men in suits on the other side of glass, all glaring at Harry, roaring up to end this.

“Anyone in particular?”

“According to public opinion, I can only ever write songs about one girl, so everyone can go figure who I’d sleep with.”

One of the managers banged on the window. Everyone looked up as he made a wrapping up sign with his hand. Harry smiled, proud of himself.

“Well, that’s One Direction for you folks…”

“That bloody fucker—“

“Hey, hey, hey.” One of the other managers, an older rich guy by the name of Vincent—the most tolerable out of the bunch, calmed Lenard down.

“He just ruined that interview! We’re going to have a weeks worth of bad press!”

“I already contacted them and they agreed to cuts Harry’s part…”

The voices trailed off as Harry snuck out of the group and into an elevator at the hotel, he made eye contact with one of the members of security but the man, Paul, had a soft spot for young love and simply looked away.

Harry pressed button twenty and the doors quickly shut, the elevator starting its climb to the high floor. He raced to Y/n’s room as the doors opened and rapidly knocked on her door.

“It’s me!” He yelled, knowing a crazy fan would knock the same way he was.

The door swung open and Y/n was met with a sad tall man, so genuinely looked like he needed a hug.

“Harry?” She ushered him inside, locking the door and pulling him in for a hug. “What happened?”

“Management.” Harry sighed. “I got yelled at for not being in my room because apparently there was an impromptu meeting this morning. Then I kinda implied we were together to stick it to him during the interview and said i was writing a song about us having sex and now he’s pissed and I’m so so sorry.”

Y/n broke apart from Harry’s tight hug, pulling back to get a look at the man, once boy, that was apologizing for standing up for himself. She couldn’t believe it. Against Lenard too, which makes Harry’s actions much more valid.

She stroked his cheek, looking into his green eyes that had a tinge of red from tears of anger forming in his eyes. “Hey if it’s to stick it to that Lenard then I’ll release our sex tape if it mean he’d quit and leave us alone.” Y/n joked, causing Harry to let out a much needed sigh of laughter.

“He’d probably drop me after that.”

“Yeah but he’d be jealous.” Harry smiled again, looking at the love of his life. He hand traced her jaw, and thumb traced her lip.

Harry nodded agreeing with the plan, until his face quickly went sour. “But my mum would kill me—god.” Y/n giggled as Harry look deeply annoyed.

“I think it’s time.” Harry’s decided, taking a deep breath before he continued. “I think I’ll bring it up with the others.”

“Really?” Y/n asked.

“Yeah. Lenard has already threatened to make me back up and he said some stuff about you-“ He took a deep breath. “I think I could do better on my own, with my own team. People who don’t care if I sleep with you, or sing about sex.” Harry chuckled, leaning into the fantasy.

“Oh yeah? And how would this sex song go?”

“Hmm.” Harry thought, before singing a jingle of a tune. “I just want to taste it.”

“Haha. You’re funny.” She chided. “Remember to never let your dick do the writing here.”

“Maybe writing about sex is a bit too much. Even for me.” Harry thought. “He would make it way to rude for public radio.”

“He?”

“Yeah my dick, Ed.” Harry teased. “You want to meet him again?”

“Wait Ed like Edward, your middle name?”

“Yeah and Ward is the name of my bonus nipple—“

“I think it’s time for bed.” Y/n interrupted. “You need sleep.”

Harry nodded and followed her lead, stripping himself until he was left in his boxers and she was in her bra and panties. Sex definitely was not on the menu tonight, but they both were a sucker to intimacy and body warmth.

“I’m flying out tomorrow morning.”

“Don’t remind me.” Harry groaned.

“I was thinking, you come with me.” Y/n asked.

“You mean I should skip interviews tomorrow?”

“You have sick days you’re entitled to.” Y/n reminded him, booping his nose. “They can’t sue you for catching a cold. And you definitely look sick in my expert opinion.”

“I guess I’ll take your word for it.” Harry snuggled closer. “Where are we going then?”

“Plane goes to England. Maybe see your mum and then leave to Italy?”

“That sounds so perfect.” Harry sighed, knowing that honestly sounds amazing. “I love you.” He kissed her face, sprinkling them all over her face. “So much.”

“I already said I love you. Don’t make me regret that." Y/n said, sleep taking over her voice. “Goodnight Harry.”

“Night, love.”

Looking Through You

Just as Louis and Liam were starting out in the music industry, writing and producing for up and coming artists, a fateful meeting with new pop singer Harry Styles changes everything. Four years later, just as Harry is set to embark on his next world tour, a drunken confession causes a rift between once inseparable friends. As Harry tries to make sense of his feelings for Louis, he begins writing his next album to express them as it may be the only way to break through the walls that Louis has built between them.

When the Sun Won't Let You Sleep

Four years ago, Louis Tomlinson left the UK to live on an Antarctic research station for reasons best left in the past. He’s carved out a life for himself on the ice and has dedicated himself to his research, his friends, and especially the Halley VI research station. He’s less than thrilled when he learns that Harry Styles, a glaciologist from another base who once broke his heart, will be coming to Halley, and he’s definitely unprepared for the upheaval Harry brings with him.

Former member of the British boy band One Direction, Louis Tomlinson will perform, in May, three shows in Brazil. It will be the third time that the musician will perform in the country, an experience that, according to him, is always chaotic - and "in the best possible sense". This is what the singer said to g1, in an interview held at Allianz Parque, where he will play in São Paulo, on May 11.

The shows are from the "Faith in the Future" tour, in which Louis returns to his latest album, released in 2022. The setlist also involves songs from the album "Walls" and, of course, One Direction hits.

Fever among children and adolescents in the 2010s, the pop group was formed from the TV show "The X Factor" and lasted six years, breaking up in 2016. Since then, the musicians have followed a solo career. A fact that, in Louis' eyes, is inevitably competitive.

"Your only reference is to compare yourself with the other members," said the Englishman. "You start to think, 'If they're getting this, why am I not getting it?'"

On Spotify, the number of monthly listeners among artists differs a lot. The most popular star of the divorced boy band, Harry Styles has about 58.2 million. Next are Zayn Malik (27.3 million), Niall Horan (17.3 million), Liam Payne (5.7 million) and Louis (2.9 million).

But if success meters like this were once a burden for the musician, today they are no longer, according to him, who also made a point of reiterating that he has always been proud of his friends.

In the interview, the musician also commented on subjects such as the conspiracy theories that describe him as a partner of Styles, the changes of concept between his albums, a Brazilian remix of his "Kill My Mind" - from the funkeiro FP of Trem Bala -, and his interest in fashion

g1 - What is the main difference between the Louis Tomlinson of the X Factor, 2010 and the Louis Tomlinson of today?

Louis Tomlinson - There is a lot of naivete in the boy who appeared in the X Factor. I really didn't know what I was getting into. I didn't know how that would put me sitting here. I definitely had no idea what I was acquiring.

I think I feel much more fulfilled. More confident. It took me a while to have enough courage to say: 'I'm creative, I'm a singer, I'm a composer

Now, I'm just internalizing all these feelings. When you grow up in a place like Doncaster, where I grew up, it takes a while to believe in all these things. Because you only watched it from afar, on TV or on the radio. So, when you become one of these people, there is a whole process until you believe and understand everything.

g1 - And what is the greatest similarity?

Louis Tomlinson - Probably my appearance (laughs). Well, I hope my fans don't correct me here. I like to think that I've always had a very lovely relationship with them. I think that's the only constant thing.

g1 - Do you know any Brazilian singer or band?

Louis Tomlinson - We were talking today about Anitta. And hm... Fresh? Fre? Fresno? I'm learning. I hope [the confusion with the band's name] didn't sound disrespectful, it wasn't my intention.

Do you have any recommendations for me? I got some tips today. What do you have for me?

g1 - There is a Brazilian musician called FP do Trem Bala. He made a remix of 'Kill My Mind'...

Louis Tomlinson - Chaos. And in the best possible sense. I totally love it.

Live experiences are defined by the most chaotic moments. And coming here and always feeling this energy is as if from the first drum beat, the fans were already there. It's a really triumphant feeling.

g1 - In musical terms, how was the experience of creating 'Faith in the Future' compared to 'Walls'?

Louis Tomlinson - I felt much more fulfilled, confident. I had more understanding of what I wanted to do and how to do it.

[On the first album], there was the factor that I left One Direction. It was as if my head was a mess and there was so much to think about... It didn't have a clear direction. I had to go through the experimentation phase to, in fact, understand who I am as an artist. That took time.

Throughout my creation of 'Walls', this was happening, but I was in a clearer, more concise place going to 'Faith in the Future'. And I think that made [the second] album better.

g1 - Recently, you created 28 Clothing, a fashion brand. What is your relationship with this sector?

Louis Tomlinson - I've always had a very funny relationship with fashion. Without a doubt, I'm interested in clothes, I've always been. Since I was young. But there is a level of haute couture that goes far beyond my understanding.

You know, I like to dress well. The brand is something I've always wanted to do. It is also intertwined with one of my [greatest] passions, football.

Football and fashion have been connected since the game was a game. People's fashion in the stands and everything else...

I think it's a very interesting thing and, for sure, a culture in which I was already inserted when I was younger. So, the brand helps me tell my story.

g1 - You once mentioned that you felt a little uncomfortable and more competitive at the beginning of your solo career. You said you were a little upset because you kept comparing your level of success with that of the other members of One Direction. Do you still feel that way?

Louis Tomlinson - No, I don't feel like it. Really. But I think that anyone - and obviously, there won't be many people who can identify with it - but anyone who has gone through a similar situation...

Being in a band and leaving on your own will always make your only reference be to compare yourself with other members. That's literally all you have.

I think it's a matter of maturity, actually. It took me a long time to look at it for what it was. Because that's where petulance begins. You start to think: 'If they're getting this, why can't I do it?'. And that becomes a little toxic.

Unfortunately, this is the nature of the music industry. It is naturally competitive. We are all competing for spots.

But now I see it in a very different way. And as I said, this requires maturity. I also needed to succeed on my own to be able to get through this. To overcome this.

Now, this comes back as I feel a confidence in saying these things.

Oh, and just to reiterate, because it's important: while I felt competitive, or more competitive than I am today, it wasn't like I wasn't immensely proud of everything the boys were doing.

It was more about reflecting on my own situation. Just about thinking: 'Oh, I wish I had a little of that'.

Now, I feel in a very, very, different place. And it's a nicer thing to feel, because being very competitive isn’t always the nicest feeling.

g1 - I imagine you hear questions like this all the time, right? Does it bother you?

Louis Tomlinson - Yes, it's okay. As I mentioned before, I understand the obvious public interest in One Direction. That's obvious. And you know, I appreciate that these things are interesting. I suppose [that they are].

g1 - Louis, many fans believe in the conspiracy theory that you’re dating Harry Styles, even though you describe this story as ridiculous. Why is this conspiracy so famous?

Louis Tomlinson - What I realized a few years ago is that there is nothing I can say, there is nothing I can do to stop those who believe in this conspiracy. They are so connected with what they believe they will not see the truth for what it actually is. I'm sure many people look and find all these little conspiracies that happen in life interesting.

I would be lying if I said it doesn't annoy me a little, but it's the nature of the work.

There are times when it gets very personal. I have my son, Freddie. He's the most important person in my life. And occasionally, [these theories] end up addressing things that are kind of unfair.

That's what we have now. There's nothing I can do about it. Nothing I can say to stop people from inventing what they want to invent. So, so be it.

g1 - Finally, what is your favorite song at the moment and why?

Louis Tomlinson - My favorite album is Paolo Nutini's last. It's great, amazing. He's an amazing singer, maybe he's my favorite singer. It's indeed an inspiring album.

And favorite music... I can't remember the name, but it's from The Libertines, a band I've liked since I was young.

The other day I realized I hadn't done a top ten albums of the year list for the past 7 years, and this felt like the perfect year to remedy that. There was so much good music that came out this year, sitting back and taking a look at all of it was a bit overwhelming. 10. Nothing But Thieves-Dead Club City With a great alt/indie rock vibe, this album will keep a smile on your face from start to finish. From smooth tunes reminiscent of the early 80s, to harder deep bass sounds of the 2010s, this album is sure to bring some joy to your eardrums.

9. Boys Like Girls-Sunday At Foxwoods So although I was aware of their existence, I am not someone who really listened to Boys Like Girls until like....3 months ago. But that means I approached this album with no judgement and no expectations. A fresh perspective. And I really like this album. The songs are modern, peppy, and fun, but they dance around the edge of angst. So even if, like me, you were previously unfamiliar with this band, I think you'd find it easily enjoyable.

8. Sleep Token-Take Me Back To Eden I think Sleep Token has been on a lot of people's music radars this year, it was this way that I originally found them. Imagine my surprise when I learned they are a 'progressive metal' band. I haven't listened to a ton of their previous work, but aside from one song on this album (that I always skip) the music is deep, melodic, and beautiful. The lead singer has a haunting and soothing tone, I would definitely recommend giving them a listen (just remember to skip song #5)

7. FIZZ-The Secret To Life FIZZ is a group made up of 4 seperately successful solo artists (including my personal favorite, Dodie Clark) who have joined together to create a fabulous sound that harkens to movie soundtracks of the 90s, with a dash of flower-power and a sprinkle of queer angst. FIZZ is definitely bringing something different to the floor that I don't hear in a lot of modern bands. A bright sparkling sound that grabs your attention and

6. Niall Horan-The Show Ok, I do have to say, this album is no Heartbreak Weather (the best Niall album imo) but it's still a great album. I love listening to Niall because he feels like one of those people who will still be doing shows when he's 60 and these songs will be considered classics. These songs make me feel like it's 1974, I'm dancing in my living room, and this album is of course playing on vinyl. Everyone from your little brother to your grandma will enjoy this (even if they won't admit it).

5. The Rose-Dual Sadly I missed their show this year, but I always always adore a Rose album. Woosung's vocals are top tier, the blend of genres, and for those of you too scared to listen to Korean music, no worries, all the songs are in English. One of my favorite things about The Rose is the way they sound on their albums is the way they sound in person, and after listening to them for a few years I see so much growth in their music and it's so good.

4. No Frills Twins-Aquarius Not surprised if none of you know who this is, but this awesome Australian duo has been on my radar for close to 12 years now. This is actually their first full album and it's about time! Their unique sound and vocals are like nothing you're hearing in mainstream music today or yesterday either. If you need a full emotional escape, this is the album for you.

3. Maisie Peters-The Good Witch What an adorable human being! British singer/songwriter Maisie Peters should be your new favorite, because she certainly is mine. With an ethereal voice and thought-provoking song lyrics, you truly feel like she is telling you a story. I love how each songs has a lovely spritely feeling and Maisie's sweet voice provides you a delightful experience. Recommend if you want some joy in your music.

2. Hozier-Unreal Unearth Oh what can I say about Hozier that hasn't already been said. This album is a theraputic escape. The music is deep and orchestral and gathers you in a warm dark place. I absolutely love that the songs are inspired by Dante's Inferno, music inspired by literature are some of my favorites. I love combining two forms of art. I feel like I don't need to tell you to listen to this album, because you're smart, you've done it. But if you haven't, we all need to cry in car at some point.

Morgan's voice, music, and presence, holds such a beautiful power and she finds such perfect ways to express herself. Not often does an album truly leave me speechless. I implore you to listen to this artist.

just read a post of yours and was wondering why you think harry manipulated the other members or one direction into leaving? it seemed to me like it was a mutual decision, and over the years the hiatus ending just became less and less likely

The important thing you need to understand is that One Direction did not go on hiatus, they broke up… in 2015. The question is whether or not any member understood that other than Harry. A hiatus is a common boyband next step when the band has either reached a breaking point or is no longer making the kind of money their handlers are expecting, and so it is announced the band is going “to take a break”. The purpose of this “break” is for one of the members to make an attempt at going solo. Sometimes this solo bid is successful (Justin Timberlake) and sometimes it is not (Nick Carter). In the former case the break becomes permanent, but in the latter the one that made his solo bid can crawl back to the band and still save face because after all “it was just a break”. They don’t have to publicly carry around their failure and can pass it off in interviews as something fun that wanted to try while the band was off.

So what does that mean in terms of Harry? Well, it is important to also understand that the one pegged to go solo does not happen organically. That’s something Harry’s fans particularly have trouble understanding. At some point in the early years of the band it was decided that Harry was the one by all the business people behind the scenes. Why they chose him only they know, but it was 100% about business. And so they began to make plans for Harry. They made sure to skew articles about the band in his favor and had him spotted more on his own than the others, began to push him out front a bit more. It didn’t matter he wasn’t the best singer in the band (according to vocal experts, that’s not just me being biased in Liam’s and Zayn’s favors, though I do acknowledge I am a bit biased towards them). What mattered was that they thought they could make a lot of money off him as a solo artist, and that is what they cared about: money and control. And starting in about 2013, Harry starts to be seen in the company of people like Jeff Azoff. Now these people are there to continue the work begun by Simon, etc. to whisper in Harry’s ear and made sure he knows he’s “the best” and that the others are dragging him down, he’d be so much better off without them. And then Harry starts talking about the hiatus (more than a year prior to it being announced). But it doesn’t actually happen then. 1D is still under contract and there is time. But then Zayn leaves and it is crisis mode. It is get Harry out there making solo music as soon as possible mode. Because there is this risk by not being the first out Harry’s career could be in jeopardy. After all, when Robbie Williams left Take That, he derailed Gary Barlow’s solo career. Gary had been the chosen one, but Robbie going rogue interfered with that. So the pressure was on to get Harry out of the band at whatever cost. In my opinion that involved a lot of promises and half truths, a lot of “it will be good for all of us” and emphasis that it was a break not a break up. But Harry knew it was not a break, and even though he was definitely manipulated by Simon and by Jeff and I’m sure by others, if he looked his band mates in the face and lied, if he used their personal struggles, things he knew about them because he was in a position of trust, then that is manipulation. If you look at their behavior after the hiatus was announced (it was primarily Liam who was giving any kind of time frame and never Harry promising to come back), and then further once it came into effect (Niall on vacation, Liam and Louis writing together for the next album, Harry on a yacht signing his solo contract two months after the fact). It does not look good for the notion that everything was above board and honest. I could be wrong. I could be biased. I lived through the hiatus of *NSYNC, and what I remember about the announcement was that though they were promising to come back as all boy bands do they also acknowledged that Justin was going solo. Harry never made such an acknowledgment, and frankly I do side eye him a bit for it. Maybe he was honest with them. I don’t know. I wasn’t there. Looking at his solo career, Harry has a history of avoiding tough questions though, has a tendency of not picking a side for fear he might pick the wrong one. I mean, he data mined his fans to make sure he could come out in favor of BLM. He’s not the heroic freedom fighter he’s painted to be. But like I said, maybe I’m just biased. Maybe I’m just fed up. Maybe I’m just sick of watching a talented musician self destruct while his less talented band mate gets heralded as a rock god.

Anyway, thank you for the ask. I hope that answers your question. If kind of distanced myself from the Harry hate lately. I just don’t particularly see the point in wasting my time on him anymore.

Notes: Well, this is where the story really starts. Chapter 1 and 2 were basically a prologue. Now it’s time for the drama! Sort of. I hope to write something silly here. I am still trying to figure out what to do with this fic. I am going into this with zero planning. All I have are the COC prompts and some fleeting ideas. I have no clue what I am doing but I am having fun. Honestly this is kind of an experiment for me. I like to write something more lighthearted and cracky. And yes, it will be dramatic à la Glee.

Do you know how embarrassing it is to be part of Vitus for six fucking years – since this choir got started – and to have had a total of zero solos.

Zero.

(Maybe this is the reason why Vitis never made it past fucking Sectionals.)

Even Philippa Stainton has had solo’s and that girl cannot carry a tune to save her life. Niall says it’s because Madam Bellamy felt bad for her, and sure, that throat infection of Year 5 hit Philippa hard, but it still isn’t fair.

Agatha has suggested that I move to Rutaceae, since Miss Possibelf is definitely a better leader who doesn’t blatantly favour some students. Miss Possibelf really picks the soloists because of their talent, not out of pity.

But there is only one problem with that idea: Simon Salisbury.

Simon fucking Salisbury.

Formerly known as Simon Snow, the Chosen One, the Saviour of the Magickal World and all that jazz. Now he’s best known as the leading soloist of Rutaceae. And as being the lost heir of the Salisbury family, but ugh, that is old news by now.

Simon Salisbury, the boy I’ve been hopelessly in love with since I was 15.

No one knows about this.

People know that I am gay – being in choir made it easier to say – but no one needs to know I am gay for Simon Salisbury, the lead of the rivalling show choir. Besides, Agatha just broke up with him after almost three years of dating. Can’t really make a move now.

Oh, and he hates me.

That’s also a big problem.

It’s okay. I’ve gotten used to admiring him from afar. I admit I am not doing an excellent job with making him fall in love with me. The moment we joined our respective choirs, it all went downhill from there. After he killed the Mage in our first year it looked like there was no more need for antagonism, but I was wrong.

I was wrong. If I hadn’t made such a big deal out of the rivalry between Vitis and Rutaceae, things could’ve been different. But I was 11 and ‘Being a Pitch’ was all I had ever known in my life. Who was I, Baz Pitch, now that the House of Pitch no longer needed to hate the people in power?

So I channeled it all into choir. After all, my mother was a singer and people had expectations of me. It was stupid, I know, but I was 11 and desperate to hold on to being my mother’s son. And hence, the rivalry between me and Simon got reinstated, albeit in a less politically world-threatening way. Everyone knows we’re the main reason that the rivalry between the choirs is so big.

That’s why Dev absolutely floors me during our first rehearsal.

FIRST TIME GRAMMY AWARD WINNING ARTIST HARRY STYLES!! From the bottom of the stairs to the top of the fucking world baby, get itttt!! He won Best Pop Solo Performance for smash hit Watermelon Sugar-- the other two categories he was up for went to others but he was a dark horse for any of them so getting one is awesome! Yeah the grammys are shit but I’m so happy for him to see him receiving validation and acclaim from the industry that has never appreciated what he (and his bandmates) are and can do as artists, it’s a fucking start you know? We can enjoy the moment! Harry did! His acceptance speech was short and it feels like he was blindsided and forgot everything (including not to swear on TV and as pro as he is you know that means he was absolutely reeling, I love that) but later he said “I want to thank my fans for giving me an environment to be free to make the music that I want to make and supporting me along the way the last ten years”, yes that’s right we have helped you find a place to feel good, and “this is an incredibly sweet icing on the cake of what I get to do everyday so thank you.”

But that’s not all! He also performed, and wore things! Say what you want about Harry (or better yet please DON’T at least to me but that’s a losing battle) we always get so hyped up about even just seeing his outfits and he does not let us down! BLACK LEATHER, TITS FULLY OUT, DICK BANANA CHARM, AND A MUPPET BOA? Yeah he did that! Shirtless under a patent leather suit, I mean: wow. Very glam rock, very… well listen it’s just very GAY in like so many different ways??? Harry Lambert said they wanted “something darker, sexier, and more unexpected” which is definitely about that look I’m assuming and not the pastel thrift store rummage bin hodgepodge he wore later, unless Harry(s) and I have very different ways of interpreting “darker”. (Harry L also said “free the nipple” and we can all see that he MEANT it.) Harry red carpet-ed and accepted his award in a lavender muppet boa, tits slightly less out but still cleavagey, and with a seemingly random collection of other garments YES BABY OKAY you just WEAR THAT THEN! About that Harry L said, “we wanted to do something that felt British and eccentric, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll and a little bit camp,” but the people have spoken and they said ‘we think he looked like Cher from Clueless’ so, sorry Harry(s)! Esquire struggling to describe the look-- “the kind of thing that Styles seems to make wearable” klasjdlk the doubtful ‘seems’ is sending me. Either way we can definitely all agree on the camp part, and that the matching face mask (as seen in the audience shots and in adorbs pics of him camping it up with Lizzo backstage) is amazing, love that (even if he does spend way too much time nervously pulling it on and off omg just LEAVE IT) and it even went also with outfit number THREE (or at least it did as well as any of his anything went together lol) which was a big floppy orange coat and plaid pants and a THIRD BOA, a dignified (haha JK NOPE it’s still a muppet) black number this time.

It seems the performance was filmed in advance rather than done live-- there were clues suggesting this might be the case, but the real giveaway was when a picture from it leaked before the broadcast, lol. Way to make it so we “can’t even tell if it’s live or not” Ben, and why is he STILL so obsessed with trying to gaslight us anyway my god just say what’s prerecorded it’s fiiiine. ANYWAY Harry played Watermelon Sugar and only WS; well after all it is his GRAMMY AWARD WINNING SONG. Plus it was a really nice version, all smooth and funky, with a highlight of the night being Harry’s full on 60s girl group choreo move with the backup singers, omg. Those backing vocalists were the duo G.A.W.D., and there was extra accompaniment by fellow nominee Devonte Hynes aka Blood Orange (who also directed the performance and no I do not know what that means) and “Spencer and Josh” on horns (the closest I can find to someone crediting them so, apologies guys). Anyway! All of them (regular HS band included) were decked out in matching gucci black leather too and looking good. And Harry looked so happy to be up there performing, just beaming like a lighthouse, so overall- good good stuff, I just keep on dancin!

The real bombshell of the performance though was subtle and needed confirmation after for the excitement to really hit-- it was Sarah drumming  decked out in tight black leather and visibly pregnant!! That’s right, band drummer Sarah Jones is PREGNANT by (Grammy Award winning) guitarist Mitch, there’s a HARRY STYLES BAND BABY on the way!!!! WHAT A NIGHT! It wasn’t enough for Harry to find love in his own band, he’s somehow cupid-ing that energy all over the place and spreading it around, AMAZING!

And Liam comes through with not just a sweet congratulations for Harry (“what a huge moment, proud to be your brother” awwww) but also the final word on the performance look- goddammit it IS one of the rejected Best Song Ever video looks, LMAOOOO. But did he tag HSHQ instead of Harry directly in acknowledgment of how the awards system really works and that they are all to be congratulated or simply because it was easier? We will never know.

Additional tidbits-- bassist Hynes was apparently playing creative director Molly Hawkins’ dad’s bass- did we know her dad was a famous bassist who played with Fleetwood Mac and many other 70s stars?! If I did I had definitely forgotten! And more Molly news-- she’s also pregnant!! Harry will soon be surrounded by quarantine babies, dreams really coming true huh? Harry posted a pic of himself with Mitch and Devonte looking very cooool, we saw the ceramic watermelons label execs were sent for the WS release last year, and Rebecca Ferguson who knows 1D from way back when (and has recently drawn attention for talking frankly about how fucked up the industry is and about having seen unnamed boy band members literally slammed against the wall by their management) congratulated Harry and posted a couple of baby pop star Harry pics, cuuuute. Louis’ merch handlers, in response to no complaints whatsoever, sent out emails apologizing. They say they’ve run out of lanyards which were meant to be sent out so they will “be adding a freebie which we know you’ll enjoy” to affected customers’ orders. That is sucky about the lanyards but that’s customer care! Niall posted about his cool bright limited edition merch to remind that it will be gone gone gone tonight and also shared a pretty and touching picture from a the large anti violence rally held in London to protest the killing of Sarah Everard today. And finally some good advice from Bebe Rexha, loved by larries; she says she loves us right back but please don’t kill anyone for not streaming her new song! Yes good plan.

I’m the anon who compared Harry to Adele… I’m an opera trained singer 😂

And I’m actually doing a disservice to Harry (and Dua and Abel) because while Adele’s tone is very pretty she has some of the worst technique in mainstream music. Or at least she did until 25 era. She strained so badly she bled… She sounds a lot more healthy now but she has barely sung live so I can’t say for sure exactly how much better she got.

Yeah, 1D Harry’s vocals were almost as bad as Adele’s 25 vocals (technique wise) but I have listened to a lot of Harry live and I know he FOR SURE has improved a ton. Harry has one of the craziest vocal ranges in pop mainstream currently. He’s like, two notes away from four octaves.

To give people who aren’t familiar with it a brief intro to vocal ranges, there are 7 notes (from A to G) in each octave, and then a bunch of semitones in the middle. An octave is measured, for instance if you go from E3 to E4. The highest the number, the highest the notes.

In pop music men are usually Baritones (rare, lower range) or Tenors (more common, upper range). Women are usually Contraltos (lower range) or Sopranos. There are middle ground vocal ranges, for men it’s usually called Baritenor (though it’s not an official official vocal range) and for women it’s called Mezzo-Soprano.

Harry is usually rated as a Baritone/Baritenor. By range he’s definitely a Baritone, because he can go as low as Bass vocal ranges (Bass is a low low LOW vocal range usually reserved for Acapella and Opera). But the fact is that he can also reach most Soprano notes (mostly via falsetto) so people tend to place him as a Baritenor because it reflects his range a little better.

Harry’s range: D2-B5

He’s 2 notes away from four octaves (which would be D6 and literally INSANE for a man, let alone a Baritone). If I hadn’t heard him sing in that range myself I wouldn’t believe it. There’s this great website that breaks it down here.

So “he can’t reach Adele’s high notes” lol yes he can. His range is actually a semitone HIGHER than Adele’s (who’s a Mezzo-Soprano), but while Adele sings those high notes with her chest/head voice, Harry has to resort to falsetto for a lot of them, because duh, he’s a man, and a baritone at that. In contrast, though, Adele absolutely cannot reach his lows. In the website I linked above, the notes highlighted in blue are falsettos and the others are head/chest voice.

Adele’s range: B2-B♭5

She’s a semitone away from three octaves. Here’s the breakdown of her notes.

Ariana’s range: D3-E7

Ariana is a Soprano, obviously! She has a range of four octaves and 1 note. Some debate she can go as high as F#6. Her breakdown.

Taylor’s range: A2-D6

Soprano. She actually has a great range (three octaves and three notes). Her problem is that she’s pitchy and her voice is quite thin. Her tone can also get a little grating. While she has better range than Adele (and also, better technique, she strains A LOT less). Adele has better pitch, a richer tone, a fuller voice, and is a great belter. Those characteristics are the ones that give the illusion that Adele is a great singer. This is Taylor’s breakdown.

Harry got a lot better at the straining thing, he was absolutely TERRIBLE in 1D. Like, painful to watch him sing. I’m glad he didn’t do permanent damage but he was very lucky. He hits falsettos and high notes with zero straining now, which I give him kudos for. He has good enough breath control, can belt very well, and has GREAT pitch. I watched a specific performance of his, I think it was a few weeks ago, where the sound board was all over the place and he clearly couldn’t hear himself through his in ears. He performed his new songs anyway, and hit every note. I can’t overstate how hard this is.

That said, he’s far from being the best singer in the industry. I just really admire a growth story. I feel the same way about Niall Horan, though curiously enough I was never a 1D fan. Niall was actually painfully bad, and not just in a technique way. His range was less than 2 octaves, and his tone was GRATING. He improved so so SO much that I almost wanna place him higher than he deserves from that alone.

It’s not easy to improve your vocals once you’ve reached adulthood! It’s hard. If anything they tend to get worse. It’s why I commend Taylor so much for working so hard. She didn’t have to! She was already at the top of the game and it can be frustrating to work on this kind of stuff. I still think there’s room to improve but that doesn’t mean she didn’t already!

I love Miley’s voice btw, since you mentioned her. She has one of the most uniquely beautiful tones in mainstream music, she has a very good range, she tends to be very on pitch, and her voice is very very full. But she does have some technique issues.

When I point out technique issues so much, it’s for a reason. Technique issues can cut your entire career short if you don’t tackle them. Look at Mariah!

A voice that I don’t see credited nearly enough is Gaga’s. My god that woman has some of the best technique in music!
