What’s the oldest animal on the planet in terms of evolutionary history? My best guess is sharks, alligators, or dragonflies? They’re all millions of years old right?
WRONG it's jellyfish c:
these sting-covered glutinous marvels have been floating around in the ocean for as long as 700 million years, making them the all-time animalia champion in Extinction Keepaway.
#deeps#it's between them and sponges and it's starting to come down on the cnidarian side#cursed biology#paleo

Clear lower decks.
The Royal Navy ‘Blue Books’ collection is divvied into two parts.
One, the more informative, yet no less entertaining group, dives into facts and the stuff only Jack understands.
The second group are the straight-up hilarious and comical set. These regale dits, jokes, sayings, and ditties, which you would sung, told, or heard while in the mob.
These six Blue Books are available from Amazon.
The seventh book, the ‘Tiger Book’, is a different kettle of fish. It’s a large, glossy, full-colour illustrated A4 tome. It is only available directly from Peecho, my printer.
For Amazon, simply type in the book title you want, or visit my author page: https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Paul-White/author/B00CJCT5DK. (You may have to scroll through a few of my books to find the one(s) you're looking for.)
For Peecho - The Tiger Book the link is: https://www.peecho.com/print/en/237810
Enjoy the read, lads.

Do albino orcas survive well in the wild? I mean, they are apex predators with no natural enemies so them getting picked off from lack of camouflage shouldn't be an issue.
they survive just fine in terms of being easy to spot, but the real issue that large cetaceans like orcas face with albinism/leucism is...
sunburn!
unlike their naturally dark-backed relatives, these animals completely lack melanin and thus have ZERO protection from the rays of the sun, in an environment with literally no shade. (they can dive, but they're not spending enough time down there to make a whole lot of difference across the board)
sooooo repeated UV damage over their lifetime tends to just eventually give them skin cancer, which kills them.
sorry.
SO FOR ALL YOU HUMANS OUT THERE, A REMINDER:
#cursed biology#deeps#yes also wear sunscreen if you have a dark skin tone melanin only does so much and you can STILL get skin cancer#do not find this out the hard way

I looked for a source on this to send my mom, who loves manatees. Unfortunately it seems the source is this article from 2017, which has since been contradicted by this one from 2021, discussing record numbers of manatee deaths in Florida, and ones like these from 2023, which say that manatees may soon be added back to the Endangered Species list and shouldn't have ever been taken off in the first place.
What a shame.

Do you have any favorite examples of bizarre sexual dimorphism in nature?
sure do!
the blanket octopus is a wonderous creature. reaching about two meters in length, the females glide majestically through the tropical south seas, trailing two huge vibrant coattail cloaks of fused tentacle webbing behind them!
they use their brightly-colored cloak as an intimidation factor, tricking predator and prey alike into thinking that they're MUCH bigger than they actually are! look at this, would you mess with this?? I would not mess with this.
the males, on the other tentacle arm, are about an inch long.
*squeaky toy noise*
