Renovation Essentials: Why Hardwood Flooring is the Perfect Choice for Your Home
When it comes to home renovations, choosing the right flooring is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Hardwood Flooring Ottawa stands out as a timeless and versatile option that can enhance the beauty and value of your home. If you're considering a renovation, here are several compelling reasons why hardwood flooring is the perfect choice for your space.
1. Timeless Elegance
One of the most appealing aspects of hardwood flooring is its classic beauty. Available in a variety of species, colors, and finishes, hardwood can complement any design style—be it traditional, contemporary, or rustic. Unlike trends that come and go, hardwood offers a timeless elegance that never goes out of style, ensuring your home remains inviting and stylish for years to come.
2. Durability and Longevity
Hardwood floors are known for their durability. With proper care and maintenance, they can last for decades—often a lifetime. Unlike other flooring materials that may wear out or require frequent replacement, hardwood can withstand heavy foot traffic and daily wear and tear. Additionally, if the surface becomes scratched or scuffed over time, it can be sanded down and refinished, giving it a fresh look without the need for a complete replacement.
3. Increased Home Value
Investing in hardwood flooring can significantly increase your home's resale value. Many homebuyers view hardwood floors as a desirable feature, often leading to higher offers and quicker sales. According to various studies, homes with hardwood flooring tend to sell for more than those with other types of flooring, making it a smart investment for any homeowner looking to renovate.
4. Versatility in Design
Hardwood flooring is incredibly versatile, allowing you to create a variety of looks and atmospheres within your home. You can choose from different wood species, such as oak, maple, or cherry, each offering its unique grain pattern and color. Additionally, hardwood can be stained in a wide range of shades, enabling you to customize your flooring to perfectly match your decor.
5. Easy Maintenance
Maintaining hardwood floors is relatively straightforward. Regular sweeping or vacuuming, combined with occasional mopping using a wood-friendly cleaner, is typically all that’s needed to keep them looking their best. Unlike carpets that can trap allergens and require deep cleaning, hardwood floors provide a healthier living environment, making them ideal for families and allergy sufferers.
6. Sustainability
Many hardwood flooring options are sourced from sustainable forests, making them an eco-friendly choice for environmentally conscious homeowners. Additionally, hardwood is a renewable resource, and when sourced responsibly, it contributes to sustainable building practices. Choosing hardwood flooring not only enhances your home but also supports responsible forestry and environmental stewardship.
7. Comfort and Warmth
Hardwood flooring provides a warm and inviting atmosphere that enhances your home's comfort. It retains heat better than many other flooring options, making your space feel cozy during colder months. Additionally, hardwood's natural beauty and warmth add a sense of richness and elegance that can transform the ambiance of any room.
8. Acoustic Benefits
Hardwood floors can improve the acoustics of your home. They reflect sound rather than absorb it, which can enhance the clarity of conversation and music. This quality is especially beneficial in open-concept living spaces where you want to maintain a lively atmosphere without unwanted echoes or noise dampening.
9. Easy Installation Options
While the installation of hardwood flooring can vary based on the type (solid vs. engineered) and the method (nail-down, glue-down, or floating), there are options available to suit your Ottawa Renovation needs. Many homeowners choose engineered hardwood for its ease of installation and ability to handle humidity and temperature fluctuations, making it suitable for various environments.
10. A Personal Touch
Finally, hardwood flooring allows for personal expression. With numerous styles, finishes, and patterns to choose from, you can create a floor that reflects your personality and taste. Whether you prefer wide planks for a rustic farmhouse look or sleek, narrow strips for a modern vibe, hardwood flooring gives you the flexibility to customize your home.
Conclusion
When renovating your home, choosing the right flooring is essential, and hardwood flooring is a top contender for its timeless elegance, durability, and numerous benefits. From increasing your home’s value to providing a warm and inviting atmosphere, hardwood floors can enhance any space. With a wide range of options available, you can create a stunning foundation for your home that will last for years to come. So, as you embark on your renovation journey, consider hardwood flooring as the perfect choice for a beautiful and functional home.

"St. Vincent psychiatric ward: Gazette team finds relative calm, order," Montreal Gazette. December 20, 1969. Page 3. --- By RICHARD NUTBROWN In a continuing probe by The Gazette into conditions at St. Vincent de Paul penitentiary, a reporter-photographer team has found the psychiatric ward to be relatively calm and well-kept. A visit was made to the ward a day after charges that guards are being "constantly bombarded by sudden deafening outbursts of yells and cries of men clinging to cell bars in the psychiatric ward, screaming to high heaven about their desperate state" were made by Robert Deslauriers, assistant research director for the Publie Alliance of Canada.
The accusations were presented in a brief to an arbitration tribunal in Ottawa by the alliance on behalf of 2.000 prison guards.
Mr. Deslauriers also claimed that the psychiatric ward at St. Vincent de Paul was "awfully dirty."
Dr. Bruno Cormier, head of the prison hospital, told The Gazette the alliance's statements were "completely false" and that he has never heard of or met Mr. Deslauriers.
"Sure there has been some noise at night," he said, "but this is a mental hospital. The last time we had trouble with a patient was in July. Since then it has been very quiet, this I can assure you.
The psychiatric hospital is located in a wing which has been isolated from the rest of the prison, and to which was added a pre-fabricated construction for offices, occupational therapy, nursing-post and treatment rooms.
Psychiatric services first began in 1965 and it was decided then to set up facilities similar to those in the general community, with full hospitalization services, including an out-patient clinic, Dr. Cormier said.
Several inmates, many so troubled they had become psychotic, are alive today because of the hospital, Dr. Cormier said.
Experience in the psychiatric hospital at St. Vincent de Paul has been that most psychotic inmates are not dangerous," he pointed out.
"The difficult offender is not generally found among the psychotic ones, but among those with severe character disorders."
One patient is serving 30 years. When young he decided on an armed forces career but was discharged for psychiatric reasons. He was first convicted in 1960.
He was released in 1968, but four months later was back on the 30-year term. This patient would cut deep gashes into his flesh then burn the open wounds with matches or cigarets. "I suffered so much he told The Gazette.
"Now with a staff of five psychiatrists things are much better, he said. "Before, Dr. Cormier was all alone and I could only see him about once a month.
Another patient is serving his second term. Prior to being placed in the mental hospital, he had seizures and was difficult to deal with
All I had was a loud speaker prison closed-circuit radio)," he said, "and I didn't have anybody to talk with when I got nervous
He is receiving treatment daily and is recovering slowly. He said the food was good but and stopped, looking at the prison official listening to the interview.
In the hospital cell section itself, there is an unpleasant mingled odor of antiseptic and perspiration. The walls, remnants of a 100-year-old former convent, were painted last December.
The windows are very dirty. The bleak light, refracted through the glass and dirt, gives the ward a medieval air.
But the floors are swept daily, and each inmate cleans his own cell. Nothing is spotless, but an attempt is made to keep things clean. The choice and taste of the food is the prisoners main complaint
One inmate in the mental hospital described the food as 35 per cent bad and 75 per cent needing improvement while a disgruntled prison official listened. He also complained that "food delivered to the patients is always cold."
The Gazette's photographer-reporter team tried a sampling of prison food. Both agreed that the soup was good, but neither could figure out what it was. The rest of the meal, hamburger steak, peas and potatoes, was edible not palatable.

7 Factors That Influence Commercial Cleaning Costs
Commercial cleaning preserves a healthy and productive work environment with zero germs. It makes an office look tidy and smell fresh. However, understanding the costs associated with these services can be challenging. Here, we break down the seven key factors that can affect the cost of commercial cleaning in Ottawa.
Size of the Facility
The size of your facility is one of the most significant factors influencing commercial cleaning costs. Larger spaces need more time, cleaners, and resources to clean, which directly impacts the price.
For instance, a small office needs only a few weekly cleaning hours. At the same time, a large corporate building could require daily cleaning and a crew of cleaners. The square footage of your space will typically determine the baseline cost. Larger areas cost higher fees due to the improved labor and materials required.
2. Frequency of Cleaning
How often you need cleaning services also affects the overall cost. Regular daily or weekly cleaning schedules result in lower per-visit costs due to the cleaning company's predictability and steady workflow.
However, if you opt for bi-weekly or monthly commercial cleaning, the cost per visit may be higher. This is because less frequent cleanings require more intensive work to manage the buildup of dirt and grime accumulating over longer periods.
3. Type of Cleaning Services Required
The nature of the cleaning tasks needed impacts the costs. Essential commercial cleaning services, like dusting, vacuuming, trash removal, and restroom cleaning, are generally less expensive.
On the other hand, specialized services are more labor-intensive. They require specialized equipment and skills, thus costing more. Carpet cleaning, window washing, deep cleaning, and floor waxing fall under this category. Your facility's specific needs will significantly influence the final pricing.
4. Condition of the Facility
The current condition of your facility can also impact cleaning costs. A well-maintained and regularly cleaned office will require less effort and time to clean, resulting in lower costs.
Conversely, if your facility has not been cleaned regularly and requires significant attention to bring it up to standard, you can expect higher initial cleaning costs. Examples include post-construction cleanups or facilities that have been neglected for some time.
5. Location of the Facility
The geographical location of your facility can influence cleaning costs. It is due to variations in labor rates, transportation expenses, and overall living costs in different areas.
Additionally, the distance between the cleaning company's base and your facility can affect travel time and fuel costs. Thus potentially adding to the overall price.
6. Number of Occupants
The number of people regularly using the facility can affect the frequency and intensity of cleaning required. This subsequently influences the cost. High-traffic areas and facilities with many occupants typically require more frequent and thorough cleaning to maintain hygiene standards.
Office buildings, schools, or healthcare facilities fall into this category. The increased use of restrooms, break rooms, and common areas in such settings necessitates additional cleaning efforts, raising the overall costs.
7. Specific Client Requirements
Each client may have unique commercial cleaning needs or preferences that can impact the cost. For instance, some businesses may require cleaning services outside regular working hours to avoid disrupting operations. It can incur higher labor costs due to overtime or night shift rates.
Additionally, requests for the use of eco-friendly cleaning products or adherence to specific cleaning protocols and standards can also affect pricing. Tailoring commercial cleaning services to meet specific client requirements often involves additional time, effort, and resources, contributing to higher costs.
Conclusion
Understanding the factors influencing commercial cleaning costs can help you make informed decisions and budget effectively for these essential services. By considering the size of your facility, frequency of cleaning, type of services required, condition of the facility, location, number of occupants, and specific client requirements, you can better anticipate and manage the costs associated with maintaining a clean and healthy work environment. Ultimately, investing in professional commercial cleaning in Ottawa ensures a hygienic workspace and supports employee productivity and well-being. ☽ ➝ summary: moving abroad for university comes with many surprises. a new house, a new life and most of all . . . new neighbours.
✧ ・゚ : * ✧ ・゚ : *
“I feel like I’ve been reborn,” Mae sounded out with an airy chuckle, making Saffron shake her head gently, suddenly awakened from her daylight slumber. Today was their first day abroad.
A whole new country, a whole new house and a completely different life awaited the two just behind the corner, and Saffron couldn’t really say she was ready for it. The girl didn’t like changes, not at all, but this one simply had to be pursued. Moving to Canada was a big step for two college-aged women, but life can throw you into deep waters unexpectedly and without a warning. That’s what happened to her and Mae.
The letter that came in the mail one Saturday evening was a document Mae would cherish for the rest of her life. How could a little, beige envelope bring one such pride and joy? Well, how could it not? Getting into the college of your dreams was something any young, ambitious human would be ecstatic about, and that's exactly what Mae was clutching her acceptance letter from the University of Ottawa.
Saffron herself was simultaneously upset and excited about the news. Mae would finally leave for Canada to pursue her dream, but on the downside . . . she’d be gone from her life, for who knows how long? The female couldn’t really stomach the thought of her best friend being gone for the entirety of collage. Heck, wasn't that when most people peaked? Saffron didn't want to experience her best without Mae. Yes, FaceTime and WhatsApp existed, but she knew maintaining a friendship would be difficult that way. Not even mentioning timezones.
What would happen to seeing each other every other day? What about movie nights and banana pancakes on Sunday mornings? Oh, Saffron loved Mae’s pancakes. Waking up at noon, dressed in her comfiest sweater, leaning against the kitchen island while watching her friend prepare breakfast was a ritual Saffron would never want to abandon. The light, fluffy dough engulfed in a thick, sugary syrup and, if the season allowed it, fresh berries was delectably a taste of heaven. The mere thought of the morning treat made the female’s mouth water with nostalgia and pure sentiment.
Enough pancake talk, though. The red-head females head felt like a storm cloud, filled with paroxysms of electricity and emotions she couldn’t really fathom with the little energy she had. There weren’t many options in this case, and the two both knew it. Saffron could stay there, in Seoul. The city they have both lived in for almost two decades now . . . or do the unthinkable. It took a long, troublesome week, but the decision was finally made.
And it was the unthinkable option.
They left within a month of the letters arrival. Mae was sceptical of Saffron's choice at first, worried about her friends sudden, possibly risky decision, but the girl wouldn’t be turned down that easily, and they both knew that very well.
”I’m coming with you, and that’s my final decision,” were Saffron’s final words as the two made their way past airport security. Her voice didn’t dare tremble, and that had to be a sign that she was sure of her decision to the very core of her being. Mae was silent this entire time, exhausted from hours upon hours of planning, packing and worrying, but Saffron couldn’t help but notice the slightest smile form on the girl’s lips once they boarded. It stayed there for the remainder of the flight, giving Saffron hope for a successful fresh start.
Here they were now, sitting on the floor of their brand new living room, surrounded by countless cardboard boxes scribbled by black Sharpie. The condition of the house was more than decent, especially considering its long history of occupants! Cozy, affordable and somewhat well situated; the perfect combination for two highschool graduates. Not to mention the landscapes! Besides being surrounded by a nice neighbourhood, their new house was a short distance away from a forest. Who knew what secrets roamed about in the area? It was only a matter of time until the female would be able to pounce around, discovering every corner of the area.
Saff’s hand traced the groves between planks of the wooden floor, noticing each bruise and crevice. It felt so cold and strange compared to the carpeted floors of her old apartment. The walls were empty and dulled, but clean. A paint job was possibly needed, but how hard could that be? It was difficult not to picture the moment the two would be able to start decorating them. Perhaps a bookshelf full of Mae’s favourite cookbooks, or an array of modern art pieces found at garage sales? The thought of marking the house as their own itself was enough to make Saffron’s heart skip a beat, cheeks flushed with excitement.
”Earth to Bae Saffron?” The female’s head shook once more, realising she was zoning out. ”Jet lag?” Mae questioned with a soft smile, lips stained a soft crimson.
To Saffron, it was always surprising how effortlessly put-together the girl could look. Ash blonde hair frizz-less, tied into a loose sock-bun with a few strands of hair framing her heart-shaped face. Her casual look was completed with an oversized, maroon hoodie draped over her slim figure. Simple, yet exquisite.
Saffron let out a soft sigh pass her lips at the girls playful question. What was occupying her mind wasn’t fatigue, but a sense of excitement and hopefulness for the future. After all, the two hadn’t had a chance to meet any of their neighbours as of yet, or even explore the area. Despite the obvious anxiety that came with meeting new people, Saffron was quite adamant on experiencing that part of moving. The female didn’t exactly have many friends back in Seoul, so starting fresh could be a chance for new relationships, platonic or not.
"Hey, you," Mae started off once more, perhaps realising her question wasn’t to be answered anytime soon. “I did some thinking overnight, and I landed on a pretty neat idea,” She remarked, voice laced with excitement and pride.
Oh boy.
Mae's ideas had a tendency of being outgoing, and usually involved doing things Saffron normally wouldn't even think of. “What if we went out to meet our neighbours tomorrow? Try and settle in better.” She proposed, a smile lingering on her lips as she shrugged slightly, trying to come off as nonchalant. That was the typical Mae, her and her strange gift of knowing exactly what hr friends were thinking of at the given moment. Scary, but oddly amusing.
“Sure, why not.” Saffron answered, giving the older female a friendly smile and nod. It was quite relieving to have the female suggest socializing herself. After all, it was a burden off of Saffron’s shoulders.
“We are settled pretty close to the university campus, after all. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had more students scattered around the neighbourhood.” She chimed, brushing a stray fragment of hair behind her ear before digging her hands in the box labelled ‘books’.
Saffron acknowledged her friend's comment with another brisk nod, before letting out a yawn, shifting her position to stand up with a pained groan. ”You’re getting old!” Mae laughed wickedly at her younger friend’s aching, getting an eye-roll thrown towards her as a sign of playful annoyance. Saffron couldn't help but let out her own series of giggles at her own misfortune, arms now extended to stretch out her joints.
“Damnit!” Mae cursed out suddenly as Saff’s own eyebrows stitched together in question. “What’s wrong?” She asked, as Mae cupped her face with a groan. ”I'm missing a box. It should be in the garage, or outside on the porch, perhaps . . . ”* she finally muttered, getting a soft ‘oh’ from her friend once she realised the issue. “I could fetch for you.” She told her simply, giving the older a reassuring grin. It’s not like she had much more to do, anyway. Unpacking boxes was boring and hefty, and the girl would rather be doing anything else if she was to be frank.
”Would you? Ah, you’re such a dear.” Mae spoke hoarsely, doing her best to imitate an elderly lady, which she definitely nailed. Giving her one last chuckle, Saff hopped out of the room, humming a soft tune to herself. Nothing in particular, merely a series of tones that went well together. Hand sliding into the pocket of her shorts, she made her way down the stairs and into the living room area. It didn’t look much different from any other room in the house, considering all that it held was a bunch of cardboard.
Saffron’s eyes searched each door in sight, as she finally managed to locate the entrance which surprisingly didn't have any distinguishing features that would help her in her task. Embarrassingly enough, the girl was still in deep confusion about the layout of their new home, even a week into moving in. She sighed in frustration, nimble fingers lacing around the metal doorknob before turning it with ease, door creaking upon pull.
The weather was better than she would’ve ever expected from Canada. The sky was a deep grey shade, interrupted by a few rays of sunshine coming through. Air fresh and slightly damp, a neat compromise that Saff was somewhat okay with. The girl breathed in, arms raised as she allowed herself for a more thorough stretch, without any of Mae’s comments this time. "Now, where the hell is that damned box, huh?"
”Hey, you!” Saffron looked around, eyes widened at the sudden, unfamiliar voice coming from somewhere, clearly nearby. “Yeah, you. With the orange hair!” Her breath caught in her throat as she realised she was obviosuly the one being spoken to. She couldn't imagine anyone else sporting the bold shade of ginger she rocked.
Eyes narrowed and eyebrows raised, she finally caught sight of the only other human in the perimeter.
A man, roughly in his twenties. Hair a soft brown, curling here and there to create an effortlessly flawless brunette arrangement. Skin fair and spotless even from several meters away, Saffron could clearly make out his dark brown eyes and pink lips which were twisted into the sweetest grin the girl had ever seen.
Despite the delicious sight in front of her, she didn’t allow herself any closer to the male without the proper questioning. “And who’s speaking?” She asked with a furrowed brow, a slight scowl on her face. She could only blame her hostile attitude on staying inside for the past week.
The man let out a warm laugh, and Saffron realised the silliness of her question only then when it was too late. He was sitting on the porch of a neighbouring house, fingers loosely gripping onto the rim of a can of soda. “Just a friendly neighbour. Isn’t it obvious?” He stood up, leaving the comfort of the wooden step as he made his way towards the fence. Saffron’s cheeks flushed a heated pink, partly due to the embarrassing nature of the situation, but mostly because of the man’s awfully confident stature. Hands rested against the top of the wooden fence, the female realised it was short enough to act as support for the man’s head as he propped it in the palm of his hand comfortably.
“I saw the moving van come through not too long ago. You’re new around here, aren't you?” He questioned, making Saffron take a cautious step forward. “We are. My best friend and I moved in about a week ago from Seoul. For university, and all that,” the female responded, arms crossing as she cocked her head to the side, slightly taken back by the man’s kindness.
”Seoul? We have more in common than I thought!” He exclaimed in child-like excitement, making Saffron chuckle softly at his beaming face.
“I moved here with my friend a year ago. Both of us study at UO,” Saffron’s eyes left his frame for a second, hearing the front door open once more, a familiar creaking making her wince.
“Saff?” Mae called out, approaching the short girl briskly, hand hooking around her shoulder comfortably. The man gave the newcomer a polite smile, studying both women closely. "Saff, huh? Nice to meet you. I’m Hoseok," He remarked.
“Nice to meet you, neighbour. I’m Mae, we moved here this week," the female chimed out, giving Saffron's shoulder a squeeze of encouragement. "But you probably know that already considering how long you two have been talking,” Mae chuckled teasingly, placing a hand on her hip as she gave Hoseok a nod.
Saffron gulped at the girl’s statement, realising the entire reason she was outside in the first place. “Funnily enough, we've been very keen on meeting our neighbours. It’s nice to walk into one of them like this!”* Mae acknowledged, getting a nod of agreement from her friend and a warm chuckle from their neighbour. "Well, I'm very happy we ran into each other, then!" he beamed, giving Saffron a conforting look. Was it visible she was nervous?
"Hey, we should do a formal greeting one day. Are you busy tomorrow?” Mae inquired, giving Saffron a gentle shake. Was she teasing, or did she want the female to take initiative? Whatever it was, Saffron was too focused on forming coherent sentences in her head to say anything.
“Hobi!! Where the hell did you go, again?!" Another male voice came from inside the house, slightly deeper than Hoseok’s and muffled due to the distance. “Well, that’s my call. I’ll see you around?” He winked, before running back on his porch and disappearing back into the house, leaving behind only the possibly empty can of pop.
Saff let out a sigh as soon as the man left her field of vision, hands reaching to rub at her temples furiously. “This was . . . ” Mae started off, as she let go of the girl’s shoulder and proceeded to walk into the garage, locating the box she was looking for. “ . . . tiring?” Saffron finished off, earning an amused chuckle from Mae. “I was about to say exciting, but that works, too,”

Above Ottawa’s Roofs (No. 8)
The Library of Parliament's roots lie in the 1790s, when the legislative libraries of Upper and Lower Canada were created; these operated separately until the creation of the Province of Canada in 1841 and the collections were amalgamated and followed the provincial capital as it moved between Kingston, Montreal, Toronto, and Quebec City. The library was to be established in Ottawa after, in 1867, Queen Victoria chose Bytown as the new seat for her crown in the Dominion of Canada, and the Library of Parliament Act formed the institution in 1871.
Though construction of the present library began in 1859 and the collection arrived in Ottawa in 1866, work was halted in 1861 and was not completed until 1876, when the 47,000 volumes—including several donated by Queen Victoria—were installed. Around 1869, the builders discovered that they didn't have the technical knowledge to build the domed roof, meaning that Thomas Fairbairn Engineering Co. Ltd. of Manchester had to be contracted to provide a pre-fabricated dome within a few weeks; this gave the Library of Parliament the distinction of being the first building in North America to have a state-of-the-art wrought iron roof. Further, in 1883, the library's 300 gas lights were converted to electricity. However, such additional costs brought the library's price to $301,812, a sum added on top of the total cost for all the parliament buildings, which had already gone far above the original allotted budget. Within only 12 years, the entire roof was stripped of its slate shingles in a tornado that hit Parliament Hill in 1888, since then the roof has been clad in copper.
The library's contents grew over the next five decades and were saved from the 1916 fire that destroyed the majority of the Centre Block; the building was only connected to the main complex by a single corridor and the library clerk at the time, Michael MacCormac, secured the library's iron doors before the fire could spread into that area. Fire eventually broke out in 1952, in the library's cupola, and caused extensive damage through smoke and water. It was then necessary to perform structural work, as well as to install a replica of the inlaid parquet floor and dismantle the wood panelling and ship it to Montreal for cleaning and partial fireproofing. The Centre, East, and West Blocks subsequently received extensive climate control and electrical upgrades, but the library was largely overlooked.
The deficiencies, plus conservation, rehabilitation, and upgrading, were addressed when a major, $52 million renovation was researched in 1996 and undertaken between 2002 and 2006. Public Works and Government Services Canada contracted the Thomas Fuller Construction Company (operated by the building designer's great-grandsons) to manage a project that fixed leaks in the roof and crumbling mortar in the walls on the exterior, as well as extensive repairs to the wood and plaster work and the installation of climate control systems on the interior. Also done at the time was a nine metre deep excavation of the bedrock beneath the library building, in order to provide more storage space, mechanical areas, and a link to an existing loading dock. The project used precision survey, laser measurement, photogrammetry, and the then fledgling technology of Computer Aided Three Dimensional Interactive Application. After four years of work, the library was opened to the public, with tours of the library resuming on 5 June 2006,though Thomas Fuller Construction filed a $21 million lawsuit against the Crown for cost overruns.

(After the women left)
“Well well, I was wondering when you’d find me, Dr. Lector.”
Mason Verger stepped out of the cabin and over to a struggling Hannibal, his face a disfigured mess and his voice akin to gravel being placed in a blender. He looked like a decrepit old man that died and came back to life, the iris of his visible eye a darkened red. Hannibal tried to work through the blinding pain shooting through his leg but found it nearly impossible, especially once Mason spoke again.
“That looks like it hurts, Hannibal. Would you like some help?”
Mason stalked over to him with a menacing chuckle before bringing his foot down onto the bear trap and stepping on it, causing the man to let out a yell through gritted teeth.
“Wh-what exactly do you want, Mason? And why aren’t you dead?”
The disfigured man simply shrugged a bit before leaning in close to Hannibal, the smell of him being putrid at best.
“What I want should be obvious Dr., but let me explain. My new life here depends on giving some...gifts to the person that brought me back. You’re one of those gifts.”
Hannibal listened for a moment before taking the closeness of Mason and using it to land a clean swing on his jaw, causing him to fall back. While Mason was down, Hannibal tried to crawl away only to be grabbed from behind. Before he could turn and land another blow, Mason grabbed his left arm and literally pulled his shoulder out of socket, getting an agonized cry from Hannibal. Mason then opened the bear trap with relative ease, watching the blood flow from Hannibal’s leg for a moment before placing his hand over the leaking wound. His palm began to glow and heat up to the point of extreme pain, the heat more than enough to cauterize the wound so that it would stop bleeding.
“Can’t have you dying on us here, Doc. That just wouldn’t be fair.” Mason said with a horrific smile.
The burning pain of Hannibal’s leg was enough for him to pass out, making Mason’s voice the last thing he heard. Mason, on the other hand, dragged Hannibal’s body towards the lake where the camp kept their boats, all manual except for a motorboat for emergencies. Once the unconscious doctor was placed in the emergency boat, Mason grabbed two oars and began to row the two of them down the Ottawa River, heading east until they reached the St. Lawrence River. Once there, he started the motor and began to head southwest, eyes darting about his surroundings. Roughly 4 hours later the two were still going along the St. Lawrence, near the Canadian/US border portion of the river. About this time, Mason had to change out the fuel tank for the spare kept on the boat, delivering a rough punch to a stirring Hannibal in between to keep him out.
Before long Mason had arrived at Oak Island in Hammond, New York, where he docked the boat and carried Hannibal deep into the woods until he was at a secluded cabin. Tying him to a hook that was attached to the ceiling in the middle of the open living space, the deformed man limped off to grab a bucket and fill it with water only to throw it on Hannibal, stunning him awake. With gasping breaths, he looked around before gritting his teeth as the pain in his leg returned with full force.
“Wh-...where am I? This doesn’t look like your cabin so I know we’ve moved.”
“Well well, congrats on that lovely deduction, Sleeping Beauty! No, we’re not at my camp because I wouldn’t want to kill any of my precious campers.”
“Campers? You mean your victims?” Hannibal remarked sarcastically.
Mason snarled before delivering a rough blow to Hannibal’s ribs, his strength enough to crack at least two.
“Those children don’t have anything without me, we both know that. The least they can do is thank me for my...benevolence.”
Hannibal coughed up a bit of blood as his breathing became more labored, though his eyes held only hatred for the wretched man that was holding him hostage.
“What happened to you, Mason? Margot thought she killed you…”
“She did, actually. But you don’t get to where I am by being easy to kill, Doc.”
Margot looked at the sodium cyanide tablet for a moment before placing it into the glass of red wine, letting it dissolve before stirring it until it was combined. Her hands shook as she took a deep breath, steeling her resolve and painting an emotionless expression on her face so that she could take the glasses out into the dining room. She walked out to where her brother waited expectantly, taking a bite of his food as she placed the wine to his right. Mason gave Margot a smile that was more of a sneer before taking a bite of his food. A satisfied hum sounded from him at the taste of her cooking, his gaze on her amused as she silently ate her own food. Mason grabbed his glass and took a swig of the wine to wash down the food he ate, immediately noticing a slight almond aftertaste before pain shot through his entire body. His eyes went to Margot as he began to suffocate, her eyes finally meeting his nervously. Before he could ask her what was in his drink he began to lose consciousness, the glass slipping from his hand and falling onto the table with a light thud.
Just before passing out Mason fell to the floor from his chair, gasping for air and clutching at his throat before muttering a soft phrase too low for Margot to hear.
“Ma voie appartient au diable. Ill est notre redempter…”
Within four minutes, Mason Verger was dead on the floor of the dining room with Margot looking at him in both shock and slight satisfaction. She’d finally accomplished what she wanted and felt pure relief. Stepping over Mason’s body she suddenly felt tired and made her way to her bed, finally at peace enough to sleep without the worry of her brother sneaking into her room and hurting her.
Two hours later, Mason began to stir. His body changed and shifted, his skin almost melting off until he was unrecognizable to anyone who knew him just before an agonized cry tore from his throat. The sound was enough to wake Margot from her sleep and drive her to find the source of what stirred her. Mason waited for his sister to come back down to the first floor of the massive house, lurking in the shadows and watching Margot closely. Before she could even react he pounced on her inhumanly quick, making her scream in terror.
“Who are you? What do you want from me?!”
He gave her a crooked grin before a low chuckle came from his throat.
“You don’t know me now, dear sister?”
“M-Mason? What happened to- I thought you were- How-”
Mason grabbed Margot by her throat with a menacing snarl. “I think the real question is, what made you try to kill me? All the time we’ve spent together and you had to go and mess it up like this.”
Margot struggled a bit under his grip, tears beginning to flow from her eyes as she realized she’d failed. Looking down to the floor as she sniffled, she spoke with labored breaths.
“I...went to see this therapist. He told me that killing you would be good for me, help me heal and such.”
“Is that right? And what certified therapist would tell you that?”
“I...I can’t say.”
Mason tightened his grip on Margot’s throat only to pull her in close to his disfigured face.
“Let me sweeten this for you, dear. You show me who he is and I won’t kill you right here. Tell him you did what he said, that it was a success! Then I’ll let you go and you can pretend I really am dead.”
Margot looked at him with wide, fear-filled eyes but agreed to his terms.
Hannibal let his head drop as he swung side to side slightly, blood dripping from his mouth before he spit at the floor.
“So you had her lie to me and you let her go.”
Mason chuckled before taking a seat in a chair across from him. “Well...no. I never said I wouldn’t kill her at all. Just that I wouldn’t kill her in that moment. I had to find the man that turned my precious sister against me, after all.”
At those words, Hannibal looked up to meet his face with the best look of incredulity he could muster.
“Turned your sister? You raped her! You did one of the most despicable things anyone can do to another person to the one you were supposed to care for! And those children have been subjected to the same treatment. They are all victims.”
Mason stood and got in Hannibal’s face once again, grabbing his sore jaw tightly.
“Well then, Dr. Lector...I guess you’ll be my next victim then.”
(Back at the Lector Home)
More people have addictions than we’d like to acknowledge, but Amira embraces hers. Music is her drug of choice and dancing is her way of escape. Since she was a child, whenever she couldn’t put how she felt into words she would close herself off and dance. Hannibal noticed early on that this was her coping mechanism and decided to turn the basement of their house into a dance studio. It was soundproof and spacious, the perfect setting for his youngest to let out everything she bottled up without being bothered or disturbing anyone else in the house.
Currently, though, Amira wasn’t dancing. She simply laid in the middle of her studio, music blasting as she cried. Her chest heaved, eyes nearly as red as her hair, the only other sound coming from her being pained wails. She’d asked Xavier to stay with her family, but he couldn’t help but feel the overwhelming sorrow and worry that raked his mate. He sat and half listened to the rest of the planning before standing abruptly.
“I need to go check on Amira.”
With those words, he left the office and made his way down to the basement. He didn't bother knocking once he was there knowing the music was too loud, simply walking in. No words were said, he just closed the door and walked to the stereo to turn the music off before picking Amira up and sitting in a nearby chair with her limp frame in his lap. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head, the sweet scent of her hair reminding him of one of the many reasons he loved her.
“You know I can feel you, Mimi. Please don’t hide from me, ma petit.”
Amira sighed in slight relief, just having Xavier close to her bringing more comfort than she expected. She shifted until she was straddling his lap and hugged his torso tightly, burying her face in his neck before placing a soft kiss there as a silent thank you. He held her and they sat in a comfortable silence for about 5 minutes before she finally spoke.
“I just want him to be okay…”
“I know, but he’s strong. We’ll find him and wipe out who or whatever did this.”
The small demon huffed a bit but found herself believing him with a nod of agreement. As they sat a bit longer Amira suddenly sat up and slapped Xavier in the chest with wide eyes.
“Woman, what the hell?!”
“I’ve got an idea! We need to go tell the others!!”
Before Xavier could even ask what the idea was, Amira hopped out of his lap and ran upstairs to the office where the rest of the family was. She burst through the doors and found her brothers along with Will and their mothers sitting around a table going back and forth about how to get Hannibal. They stopped at the sight of Amira with Xavier trailing behind, his face as confused as the others.
“Mom...what if we used a tracking spell to find him?”
Diana's eyes widened before a grin spread across her face, grabbing her child's face and kissing her excitedly.
“That could work. It's a long shot but if we do it together it could be just strong enough to work!”
Will, a definite skeptic when it came to magic, looked between the two of them with no small amount of doubt, choosing to voice his views openly.
“I'm sorry ladies, but I don't see how any of your…beliefs are going to find him, let alone save him.”
Before Diana could stop her, Amira turned to walk towards her uncle without a word and leaned over the desk before blowing out air cold enough to freeze his hands in place on Hannibal's desk. Will tried to pry his hands from the ice but found himself stuck in place before coughing roughly, a sensation similar to heartburn taking over his chest. In the midst of this Amira began to speak, her face expressionless.
“I don't know what my father told you about us William, but these aren't ‘beliefs’. We're witches, my mother and I. A big yet basic part of that is elemental control.”
Will was leaning forward at this point, his chest filled with a burning pain that he couldn't soothe just before the taste of dirt filled his mouth. It was nearly unbearable but suddenly he couldn't breathe, his eyes quickly meeting Amira's cold gaze.
“Three minutes and you'll be dead. Let's see if you can believe that.”
Diana considered telling her child off, but she knew that would only result in Will being dead. Instead, she waved her hand, undoing the spells currently plaguing him. The man in question took loud gasps of air and held his throat as if it would fall off. Amira folded her arms but didn't speak as Xavier placed his hands on her shoulders and rubbed soothing circles into her neck. Elisha spoke up first, trying to keep anything else from happening.
“Let's go with the spell. Amira and Diana are powerful in their own rights so together I don't doubt that they're capable.”
Amira smirked at Will but nodded to her step-mother before placing her hands on top of Xavier’s.
“Thank you. Now, if I recall correctly we’ll need eight candles, a photo of dad, a map of the area he was in last, and some privacy.”
Diana chuckled at her daughter but admired her knowledge.
“So you have been paying attention to my lessons. Color me surprised.”
“Mama I always pay attention, Even when you think I don’t.”
(Meanwhile, at the cabin)
Hannibal took labored breaths, trying to conserve his strength and soothe the ache of his cracked ribs. By his measures, he’d been strung up for about two days now and keeping a poker face was becoming harder by the hour. The pain coursing through his body was nearly unbearable if not for the knowledge that his family was doing their best to find him. He only hoped they would find him before it was too late...
A/N: Damn, I really didn’t think we’d get this far. My little one-shot turned into a series! But I can’t say I’m mad because my friends continue to gas up encourage me to keep it going. I think I’m going to conclude this story soon but don’t worry, we gone get through the storm first!

Desired Skeleton: The Golden Heir Character Name: Julien Moreau
Age (18+): Twenty-one
Gender/Pronouns: Cismale, he/him
Hometown: Ottawa, Canada
Major: Political Science
Desired Faceclaim: Émile Woon
Character blurb:
He gingerly steps onto the platform, toting rosy cheeks and a practiced grace. This is understandable considering the lineage he stems from — a background that everyone who surrounds him is intimately aware of, including you. He is well-dressed, well-fed, well-loved, and all of these factors exude from every pore of his being. There is a faint glow that radiates from him; the aura of untouched naivety, of someone who lives blissfully free of worldly worries. He offers you a warm grin as he walks past, though it does not seem to reach his eyes. Still, you cannot help but smile back.
Developed Headcanons:
HISTORY: Julien’s father is the highly respected speaker for the Canadian parliament, and his mother runs a slew of non-profit foundations, and deems herself a socialite in her off hours (read: stay-at-home mom, without much of the mom part, and more of the thinly veiled alcoholism and marital problems). He has one sibling — a bratty younger sister, Anais — who he deeply cherishes. His family name is delicately braided into the foundations of the French and Canadian governments; information that is well-known to familial outsiders. All of them have established connections in high places, as their reputation and lineage overshadow any and all other personal details.
His childhood is etiquette classes, private tutors, lavish events, and the echoes of empty rooms in a house that is far too large. The essential fares of a lonely rich boy, though he doesn’t consider himself to be particularly lonesome. He is well-off and pampered, with parents who pay heaps of attention to him, despite being caught up in their own affairs. He is showered with near endless accolades throughout his youth, grooming a belief that the world is giving and kind, and the people who inhabit it are inherently good, keeping him trapped in a bubble of opulent warmth.
Though every moment is quietly controlled, and every action laced with the constant fear of mistake or failure, he is still — generally — quite contented with his life.
(Or at least, he can fake it enough to make everyone believe that, including himself.)
PERSONALITY: ( alignment — lawful neutral / mbti — esfj / zodiac — taurus )
His image is clean-cut and untarnished, making it easy for others to project whatever they desire onto him. Everyone who surrounds him views him differently — the golden child, the loving friend, the gifted student, the talented athlete. None of the interpretations ever seem to skew on the negative side, at least the ones he is aware of.
He was bred to hold a fear of negative emotions, and shown that the only viable option to stay above the heap is to project a very particular image. Those kinds of feelings are to be expressed only in private, only out of the public eye, if expressed at all. Interactions between his family unit are either unbearably positive in that ‘a very special episode’ sort of way, or heavily weighted periods of uncomfortable silence. This has contributed to a complete suppression of negative feelings, to the point that for a long while, it appeared they were going to exist in a permanent lock-down.
The events of the past year have proven to be an excellent lock-pick, as gradual cracks in the canvas have begun to form. Within, he is a deeply troubled kid. Worrying lack of sleep, poorly handled stress, a penchant for watching depressing foreign films alone at 4 AM — these are all signs of deeper problems that he tries to brush off as simple character quirks when questioned. This neuroticism has begun to peek through the holes in occasional blowout fits of rage and depression — the aftermath of which are always desperate apologies and sheer embarrassment. The last thing he desires is pity, or for any word of these growing issues to get out into the world. His feelings are for him to repress all by himself, thank you very much.
THE PARASITE: The beginnings of Julien’s relationship with The Parasite were primarily rooted in the image obsession he has been bred with, though it certainly has bloomed into true and deep affections. He has always been somewhat of a romantic; compelled toward soppy love stories and the concept of soulmates. That four letter word does hang unspoken on his lips, and was a mere fraction away from spilling until Frederick’s death. His head has been significantly more cloudy since — though he still considers The Parasite to be one of the few presences that can truly ground him. (Oh, poor naive soul.)
THE FALLEN ANGEL: There are not many freedoms offered to Julien in the way of natural youthful rebellion, as he had been directed onto a very particular path without much room for deviation. This factor led to the development of a deep jealousy toward his peers who were permitted to run freely, feel the wind in their hair and all that cliche ‘coming-of-age’ nonsense. This jealousy presents itself in his adult life as a sense of superiority over those who live recklessly, and of those who experience the consequences. If he is able to keep his head on straight, exist carefully between the lines, why should he be expected to sympathize with those who throw that all away?
The Fallen Angel’s fall from grace is tragic, yes, but in his mind, they are simply facing the heat for their actions. Julien harbors regret for how he has treated them, but he cannot be expected to throw his work, his reputation, his name into the flames to keep one person warm.
THE GOOD SAMARITAN: They were rugby teammates and friends, and though it’d be a stretch to say they were close, there was never any bad blood or tension between them — as two kindhearted and popular year twos, they got along quite well.
Frederick’s death has proven to be quite the blow to Julien’s mental state. He grew up incredibly sheltered from the pains of the world, outside of the charity balls his mother would throw for starving children or dying animals or whatever tragedy she chose to care about that month, so being personally involved in one has resulted in feelings he is unaccustomed to. He carries the thought that he could’ve done something, if only he hadn’t been so wrapped up in his own business. If he would’ve just been paying attention, he would’ve seen him wander off into the woods alone… he has been plagued by recurring nightmares about the bonfire in light of this guilt.
MAJOR: Political Science was not quite the major he would’ve chosen for himself, but it was essentially a base level expectation that he would follow in the footsteps of his family and pursue a career in the political world. He receives high marks, but has approximately zero passion for the work he is doing. He is still about a second away from switching to Philosophy or Literature or anything that would be more engaging.
INTERESTS: He has a frankly astounding addiction to caffeine. Seeing as he very rarely gets enough sleep — both due to his schedule being packed to the brim, and his own propensity for staying up for no reason — he relies on about five cups of coffee a day. (Or a noxious mix of random energy drinks and an assortment of painfully sugary candy, though that is a potion for only the most dire of occasions.)
As a pretentious child of wealth, offered private schools and personalized tutoring, it is only natural Julien adore reading as an adult. He was raised on the pompous classics, though his all time favorite book will forever be The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.
Though he grew up in a house with maids, his mother always made certain that baked goods were personally prepared with her family recipes. And as a boy with a sweet tooth that will not quit, a blend of Malay and French desserts comprise the most nostalgic flavors of his childhood. In times of immense stress, he would sneak to their expansive kitchen in the middle of the night, hastily (and poorly) prepare a galette or a red bean kuih or whatever else his tongue was vying for, and scarf it down like a seasoned champ. Nowadays, he’s replaced this stress relief with a (decidedly worse) smoking habit. The lack of filling pastries with the addition of endless packs of cigs has contributed to bad breath and a stomach that is perpetually craving a sugar rush.
AESTHETIC: Decorative lattes, thick hardcover books, untouched piles of snow, cozy turtlenecks, rose bushes, the click of shoes on tiled floors, kiss-swollen lips, acoustics with loads of reverb, leather oxfords, a lightly floured cutting board, whiskey glasses, ugly babies from historical paintings, ashtrays, Baz Luhrman films, an icy rugby field, the drone of coffee-shop chatter, the moment of stillness before sunrise.
Writing Sample:
The gentle glow of soft orange light. The burn that builds in the pit of his belly, flooding his veins and tingling down into his toes. A warm and inviting hand, curled into his own. Eyes crinkling with a joke being told; a genuine smile that makes his cheeks hurt.
Snow falls from the heavens. The flakes that drift before his vision, that pile softly around his feet, are blood red. He looks up — the sky is a dark crimson. When his eyes drop, everyone around the fire has vanished, leaving Frederick alone, slumped unnaturally. He tries to call to him, but no sound comes out.
Frederick turns, and his eyes are pitch black.
Julien jolts up. His breathing is labored, erratic, and his hair lays flush against his forehead, glistened with a cold sweat. His heart is making it well known that it desires a very promptexit from his chest, banging wildly against the walls of his ribcage. He spares an errant glance at the clock at his bedside — 5:32 AM — an offers a heaving sigh. A half-hour of sleep feels hardly worth it, moreso considering his mind will need far longer to quiet down.
Thin legs swing from a cozy cocoon of three thick woven quilts, and goosebumps immediately take residence. He snatches a cigarette and a well-worn lighter from his side-table, delicately plodding toward the dorm window. Oh, if only his mother could see him now: up before sunrise, eyes weighed by bags so large they could declare themselves a sovereign nation, with the final cigarette from his pack held between deft fingers. Not to mention the sheer illegality of it all, what, with him lighting up in his room. A room that was the previous lodging of monks, no less. He figures recurring horrific nightmares about your dead friend are a sound enough excuse.
(He is, however, unsure if the monks would accept that.)
He props himself beside the window, eyes grazing the skyline. The view is less than engaging at this time of the morning — snow-capped roofs, flurried flakes, and an almost uncomfortable stillness. There are a few quiet flicks, before the flames spring to life in the darkness. The smoke comes soon after, wafting in a delicate stream up to the ceiling.
How long would it take to get over this? Another puff toward the ceiling. Months? Years? He was a friend, but their closeness was nothing to write home about, so how does it figure that he is still so hung up? He has always vied to befriend everyone in their year. He’s not sure how he’d react if this happened to anyone else. Would his brain plague him with countless dreams then?
Just my year, now, he thinks, after a moment. Another puff.
Maybe he would never be over it, cursed to exist obliviously warmed and content by the bonfire, Frederick’s blackened eyes forever on him.
Other: i created a mockblog right here that is available for perusal! also thank you for reading this gigantic wall!!!!!!! :^)
